By Desert Star Staff LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – On Jan. 14, a baby Masai giraffe was born on the savanna at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The healthy male calf has been bonding with his mother for the past two months in a backstage habitat. On Tuesday, just two days shy of his two-month birthday, the calf was reintroduced to the savanna for guests to see as they experience the Kilimanjaro Safaris attraction. The calf’s name is Jabari, which means “brave one” in Swahili. True to his name, Jabari quickly reached all
his early developmental milestones, which cleared the way for his reintroduction to the savanna to join the rest of the giraffe herd. The calf now stands seven feet tall. Jabari’s parents, Mara and George, were chosen to breed through the Species Survival Plan (SSP), overseen by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. This program ensures responsible breeding of threatened and endangered species, thereby guaranteeing healthy future generations. Jabari follows his sisters, Amira and Aella, two young female giraffe calves
who were born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom last year. The Masai giraffe, found primarily in Kenya and Tanzania, is a vulnerable species. There are believed to be roughly 32,000 Masai giraffe left in the wild, and their population continues to decline, due in part to poaching and habitat loss. It’s Sweet To Eat…In Crete!
By Pamela Price Cretan olive oil is among the best on the planet, and people in Crete consume a lot of it, along with lots of homegrown fruits and vegetables. Simple and locally sourced ingredients, unfussy cooking and generations of time-tested culinary traditions make the Greek island of Crete home of the healthiest of all the Mediterranean diets. According to Athens-based Stefanos Pertsemlides, a leading Greek nutritionist, “the Cretan diet doesn’t differentiate much from the Greek/Mediterranean diet, as the term ‘Mediterranean diet’ is based on the Cretan diet of the early 1950s when an important study revealed the Cretan diet to be a protective factor against cancer and cardiovascular diseases.” He adds that what differentiates Cretan cooking from that of other areas of Greece is that “most of the other areas in Greece do not have the extensive variety of ingredients that Crete has.” A vast and varied coastline, largely whole mountain ranges and fertile plains provide a solid backdrop for Crete’s agricultural bounty, of which olive oil has played a central role stretching back
3,500 years. With 35 million olive trees, Crete produces a third of all the olive oil in Greece, and ninety percent of it is extra virgin. In Crete, there is seasonal variation too, and as Pertsemlides points out, “Crete has such a variety of high-quality ingredients (meat, fish, vegetables, olive oil, fruits, and herbs) that are produced on the island that there is no need to import.” The cuisine and fresh food traditions of Crete are both distinct from and yet form an integral part of the whole big delicious Greek gastronomic picture. “As in most areas of Greece, the Cretan diet has specific characteristics,” Perstemlides says, “such as the wedding food (gamopilafo, the wedding risotto) or the traditional antikristo (“across the fire”) method of cooking lamb and goat meat.” And whether it is at Legacy Gastro Suites’ casual-gourmet My C. restaurant or in the comfort your suite, what you’ll taste here is indeed a mosaic of Greek and Cretan foods and flavors. Cretan honey is the product of bees collecting nectar from pine an acacia trees as well as plants and herbs like thyme, ironwort
(Cretan mountain tea), oregano, sage, and heather. In addition to its many uses in the Cretan kitchen, honey is said to have medicinal properties as natural remedies as well. Other edible Cretan wild herbs include dittany, sage, and pennyroyal. Why not try some of Crete’s organic baby artichokes and askordoulakia (tassel hyacinth bulbs)? Kapriko is slow- roasted pork with a delectably crispy skin, while apaki and siglina are gourmet smoke-cured cuts of pork. Skioufikta is a tube-shaped pasta, cooked in a meat broth, topped with grated dry anthotyro cheese. Zucchini flowers stuffed with rice and herbs are called anthi and are quite popular. The cheese spread called Xygalo is made from goat’s and/ or sheep’s milk, is low in fat and is a bit sour to the taste. Speaking of Cretan cheeses, they often find their way into traditional pie recipes that can be sweet or savory (salted); you’ll see names for these like kaltsounia, mizithra, sfakianes, lichnarakia, and others. The traditional hard Cretan bread rusks are made from barley and called dakos. Often they are served with chopped tomatoes and fresh soft
Peppers cheese drizzled with olive oil. Cretans also like to nibble on dried figs, sultanas and currants, all both healthy and tasty and which are also exported in significant quantities. Carob is making a comeback especially in bakery and confectionary, and Crete’s carob tree forests are the most extensive in the southeast
Mediterranean. And let’s not forget about organically grown fruits like oranges and of course grapes as well as apples from the Lassithi Plateau, sweet cherries from Gerakari and even bananas from Arvi. And then, of course, we could talk about Crete’s amazing wines…but that’s another delicious story!

Delegate responsibilities. The best gatherings are a team sport. Tackle this recipe for Crispy Baked Wings and let your friends help with snacks, dips and drinks. Prep what you can the day before. Reduce the time needed to make these wings on game day by prepping some steps in advance. The seasoning blend and sauces can be prepped up to two days in advance and chicken wings can be separated into drums and flats the day before. Veggies are underrated. It’s usually a good plan to have a snack that can be easily replenished for grazers attending your party. Stock up on vegetables that are easy to slice such as carrots and celery. Place some of the cut vegetables out with dips like blue cheese dressing or ranch, both of which can double as classic pairings for your wings. Redefine “homemade.” The Crispy Baked Wings can serve as a versatile base for just about any sauce you might be craving. Instead of making a sauce entirely from scratch, consider making some quick alterations to premade ones. For example, add an ingredient like Tabasco Chipotle Sauce to store-bought barbecue sauce to impart a smoky flavor and lime juice for added brightness. Small changes can add that special, homemade quality without all the work. Recipes like Chipotle Barbecue Sauce or Nashville-Style Sauce can complement wings for true crowd-pleasers – pick your favorite or try both.
Crispy Baked Wings with Chipotle Barbecue Sauce or Nashville-Style Sauce Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 40 minutes Servings: 4-6
Wings: 2 tablespoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon paprika 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 4 1/2 pounds chicken wings, drums and flats separated, tips removed
Chipotle Barbecue Sauce: 1 cup barbecue sauce 3 tablespoons Tabasco Chipotle Sauce 2 tablespoons lime juice Nashville-Style Sauce: 6 tablespoons Tabasco Sauce 8 tablespoons butter, softened 1 tablespoon light brown sugar 1 teaspoon paprika 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon salt
Heat oven to 425 F. In bowl, combine baking powder, salt, paprika and black pepper. Shake over both sides of wings. Place seasoned wings on rack over foil-lined sheet pan. Bake 20 minutes, turn wings over and continue cooking additional 20 minutes in convection oven or 30 minutes in conventional oven. Cooked wings should reach at least 180 F internal temperature with crispy texture. To make Chipotle Barbecue Sauce: In bowl, mix barbecue sauce, Tabasco Chipotle Sauce and lime juice. Alternatively, to make Nashville-Style Wing Sauce: In bowl, mix Tabasco Sauce, butter, brown sugar, paprika, garlic powder and salt. Set aside. Remove wings from oven. Toss wings with preferred sauce and serve.

Trump Again Threatens Violence If Democrats Don’t Support Him
By Jonathan Chait One of Donald Trump’s favorite riffs is a wish, cast as a warning, that his supporters inside and outside the state security services will unleash violence on his political opponents if they continue to oppose the administration. The specifics of the riff don’t vary much. Trump laments that his opponents are treating him unfairly, praises the toughness and strength of his supporters — a category that combines the police, military, and Bikers for Trump, which he apparently views as a Brownshirt-like militia — and a prediction that his supporters will at some point end their restraint. He does it again in a new

interview with Breitbart: I actually think that the people on the right are tougher, but they don’t play it tougher. Okay? I can tell you I have the support of the police, the support of the military, the support of the Bikers for Trump – I have the tough people, but they don’t play it tough — until they go to a certain point, and then it would be very bad, very bad. Early warnings that Trump could undermine the Constitution have not been borne out, which has produced a certain complacency about the issue. It is true that Trump is only an aspirational authoritarian, and to date has failed to bring his most illiberal dreams to life. He has used the government to punish independent media, prevailing upon the Post Office to raise rates on Amazon in retaliation for Jeff Bezos’s ownership of the Washington Post, and repeatedly told his staff to order the Justice Department to block a merger in order to punish CNN. So far, this has had little effect. On the other hand, if Trump wins a second term — a prospect that, under current economic conditions, is close to a toss-up — his presidency will only be a quarter of the way through. Already his authoritarian rhetoric is so thoroughly normalized that it hardly even registers as news any more. Anybody whose political efforts involve helping
Trump gain more power, rather than opposing that project, is playing Russian roulette with the Constitution. Republicans have had some success in restraining Trump’s abuses — in large part by slow-walking his most blatantly illegal or authoritarian orders. But the GOP’s willingness to defy Trump has also eroded steadily over his presidency. Congress’s failure to block Trump’s use of emergency powers to build the border wall that Congress has declined to fund is an important marker in that deterioration. Republicans used to define more modest exertions of executive power by President Obama as dangerous Caesarism. Republicans turned Obama’s rather casual vow to use his “pen and phone” to
carry out executive authority into a Hitleresque claim of total power. Accordingly, when Trump claimed executive power to fund a project Congress refused to fund, at least some conservatives denounced his plans. North Carolina senator Thom Tillis wrote an op-ed calling for Congress to deny Trump’s authority. “Conservatives rightfully cried foul when President Barack Obama used executive action to completely bypass Congress and unilaterally provide deferred action to undocumented adults who had knowingly violated the nation’s immigration laws. Some prominent Republicans went so far as to proclaim that Obama was acting more like an “emperor” or “king” than a president,” he wrote,
“There is no intellectual honesty in now turning around and arguing that there’s an imaginary asterisk attached to executive overreach — that it’s acceptable for my party but not thy party.” But then Trump started looking into supporting a primary challenger against Tillis. And lo and behold, Tillis abandoned the sacred principle. Republicans could have mustered a veto-proof majority to join with Democrats and block Trump but failed. If Republicans are too frightened to defend what they themselves regard as a vital principle of the Constitution, what confidence should we have that they’ll stand in the way of Trump’s continued assaults on the Republic?
three major questions: “Are the managers credentialed, does the company provide transparency in financial reporting and potential conflicts, and is the company responsive and accessible?” Managers also evaluate prospective clients. “If I ask the board members who their landscaper is and no one knows (when they see them at a minimum weekly and sign their checks monthly), that tells me they are not as involved in their community’s governance as they Dear B.T.: should be” said Kelly Bunnell, I don’t have a standard PCAM, President of Bentley checklist, because each Community Management. association has different priorities Last year’s Community and needs and evaluation Associations Institute President of management should be John Hammersmith PCAM, CEO customized to the uniqueness of Hammersmith Management of each community. Anti-Pipeline-Protest Bills Head to SD Governor’s Desk
By Desert Star Staff PIERRE, S.D. — Antipipeline-protest legislation that opponents say could chill free speech in South Dakota is on its way to Gov. Kristi Noem for a signature. The legislation was introduced by Noem days before the session ended - while many tribal members who opposed the bills were across the country on other business. Senate Bill 189 establishes civil penalties for “riot boosting,” or contributing money to or encouraging violent pipeline protesters. Libby Skarin, policy director with the American Civil Liberties Union of South Dakota, believes the rushed legislation goes further to stifle free speech than just pipeline protests. “The way this bill is written, it is clear that it will be able to be used to wrap up people who are merely speaking, who are using their First
Amendment rights to speak up and protest pipelines or whatever else might happen in the future,” Skarin said. “So, this is not going to be solely related to pipelines.” A second bill creates a funding source for the state to recoup any “extraordinary costs,” such as the millions faced by North Dakota after hundreds were arrested during protests of the Keystone XL pipeline. South Dakota tribal chairmen say they were not consulted about the bills, despite the governor’s promise to work with them in her January inaugural speech. The bills would protect the nearly 1,200-mile long Keystone XL pipeline, a planned TransCanada project that would slice through the state and carry 830,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Skarin said representatives of the Great Plains Tribal Chairman’s Association, representing the leaders of 16 tribes in

BOING: Profit vs. passenger safety
By Desert Star Staff Despite two deadly crashes in five months the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Boeing insisted on the airworthiness of the 737 Max. It wasn’t until the rest of the world grounded the plane that the US finally conceded. Airplane manufacturers and airlines commonly base their decisions on passenger safety versus the companies’ economic interests. The Press talked to analysts to look deeper into the issue and understand why it took the US so long to make the right decision. Boeing is America’s most crucial exporter by value, so the company’s current problems are set to hit the US hard, according to Alessandro Bruno, an independent international affairs and aerospace industry analyst. “Moreover, China, which is the second biggest market for Boeing outside the US, may use the current situation as leverage in trade talks with the White House,” the

expert told the Press. The FAA was practically forced to ground the troubled jet after US President Donald Trump “surprisingly turned out to be the only adult in the room,” when he insisted on halting the use of the 737 Max 8 jet, according to Bruno. “Boeing should have acted responsibly and pulled those planes out. Now they have to pay a lot more to fix the problem. They have to pay for the design and technical changes, which means several billions of dollars,” he said. The decision was made under international pressure, as most of the world’s regulators had chosen to ground the jet, according to Pyotr Pushkarev, chief analyst at online broker with TeleTrade Group. “If a similar crash happened in the US, or to the jets operated by the country’s airlines, the US citizens could identify the absence of any actions from the government as criminal connivance,” he wrote in an email to the Press.
So far, the world’s biggest aerospace group has suffered significant losses due to the shrunk market cap after its shares plummeted amid the latest crash and series of bans globally. “Boeing’s shares rallied from $300 around Christmas time to nearly $440. The crash of 737 Max 8 has washed nearly 15 percent out of its stock with more losses expected to come,” Pushkarev added. According to Bruno, the company should be ready to face legal costs, as the US is the most litigious society on Earth. The affected airlines reportedly have every right not only to sue Boeing but to cancel their orders for the troubled airplanes, with the producer not having much power to stop them. “Apart from legal complaints from affected airlines, Boeing may face lawsuits from families of those killed in the crashes, which could reach up to $2 million per passenger. investors, especially in the US, may file suits against the company, as Boeing is seen as the top stock of the market,” the expert said. The series of bans of Boeing’s best-selling jet may lead to a further plunge in the company’s market value, an unavoidable lag in competition with its European rival Airbus, Vladimir Rojankovski, an expert at the International Financial Center in Moscow, told the Press. When it comes to responsibilities taken by air carriers, they decided not to take any steps until they were forced to do so, because the losses of the airlines could be immense, according to Katia Frenkel, head of the analytics department at FinIst investment company. “Air carriers buy airplanes to fly them, to get profit from those purchases. A plane that is kept in a parking shelter does not bring money. Moreover, the company has to pay airports to park its jets. They have to decide which planes to replace the grounded ones with,” the expert said. Both the FAA and Boeing should also be ready for
lawsuits from passengers and air carriers, as the agency had been refusing to ground the 737 Max, insisting on its airworthiness until Trump’s decision to do so, according to Bruno. “Many airlines will lose business, as they had lost traffic. Now, companies will have to make alternative decisions on how to compensate financial losses for not using one of the world’s most popular jets,” Bruno said, stressing that more than 300 planes have been grounded, while a few thousand are currently on order. However, to demand compensation and to receive payment are two different issues, according to Frenkel. “That will lead a great number of litigations that could be simmering for years if Boeing doesn’t declare bankruptcy.” The analyst said that in the worst-case scenario, the company might lose tens of billions of dollars if airlines cancel their orders. “Boeing could lose much less if the producer recommended its customers to stop using the jet temporarily.”

5 Steps for Game Day Party Success
By Desert Star Staff Whether you have been planning for months or you’re inviting guests the day of, hosting a huge crowd on game day requires a bit more than RSVPs and a welcoming setting. Whether a “huge crowd” to you means five guests or 50, starting out with a plan can help make the day more enjoyable for everyone. To help make your game day soiree a success, knowing which snacks are top picks for the event might make shopping a little easier. The experts at Frito-Lay North America conducted the inaugural U.S. Snack Index – a poll that surveyed Americans for insights on which snacks rose to the top for consumers this year – to share what guests want on game day. Get Organized From Guests to Groceries: From sending invites to selecting the snacks you’ll serve, start by organizing your thoughts and writing down the details. For starters, create a guest list so you’ll know exactly how much food and drink you’ll need to buy and map
out your grocery list for a stress-free trip to the store. Game Day Setup: A picture is worth a thousand words, and you can rest assured many game day viewers will plan to share images of their spreads on social media. To make sure your game day setup is ready for primetime, start by decluttering your space, arranging furniture for ample seating and laying out the picture-perfect snack table so guests can reach for snacks, plates, napkins and utensils, with easy access. Snacks for All: While it may be first instinct to feel like you need to cook crafty dishes and artsy snacks, that may not necessarily be important to game day guests. In fact, according to the index, nearly all game day party-goers will enjoy snacks during the competition, and 80 percent of viewers said they’ll eat either potato or tortilla chips. Chips aren’t the only thing to consider. Score big with your guests by picking the perfect pairings, like salsa for tortilla chips, which ranks as
the most popular dip overall, or French onion dip, which is the most popular choice for dipping potato chips. Encourage Fun for Everyone: Of course, the game is the reason for the party and the center of attention, but the fact is it’s possible not every person in attendance is a sports fan. By bringing out board games or cards and setting up tables in adjacent rooms,
you can encourage a fun environment for everyone at the party. Plus, by creating a secondary station away from the TV, you’ll allow for nonsports conversation without upsetting the diehards. Keep it Simple: Generally, game day watch parties are of the more laidback variety. This no-fuss attitude carries over into party snack prep, as more than half of viewers surveyed in the U.S.
Snack Index prefer to prepare simple recipes whether they’re hosting or attending. On top of laid-back snacks, more than one-third of consumers polled plan to simply put snacks in the closest bowl rather than planning out a social media-worthy snack table. Find more survey details and snacking ideas at fritolay.com/snackindex. FamilyFeatures
By Desert Star Staff PALM SPRINGS, CA – Sure to be the event’s largest festival to date, the American Documentary Film Festival and Film Fund (AmDocs) announces a full slate of documentary and animated works from around the world. Located in the cultural mecca of Palm Springs, AmDocs has secured its place as one of the Coachella Valley’s premier and beloved events. For 2019, the festival received a record number of submissions and will be screening approximately 200 films, with about half being either world or North American/
U.S. Premieres in what is the most extensive documentary only festival on the west coast. Among the works being exhibited are films focused on indigenous people’s rights, women’s equity in society, environmental trends, celebrity, and historical biopics, cutting edge and socially relevant topics. The festival’s favorite opening night spectacular will feature Sean Sherman, founder of the company The Sioux Chef. Sean is a James Beard award-winning chef, specializing in the reintroduction of native foods as a dining and healthy alternative option. In
cooperation with the Culinary Institute Of Rancho Mirage High School, The Sioux Chef will prepare some indigenous food tasters coupled with wine in advance of the ticket holders entering the theatre screening along the red carpet. The opening night film selections will include native people’s stories, including Sacheen, which tells the story of Sacheen Littlefeather who went on stage in place of Marlon Brando in 1973 to protest the treatment of Native Americans. Sacheen Littlefeather will be on hand for the screening. For the closing night, the festival will share RBJ
the multiple award-winning films about perhaps the most popular and inspiring Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Bader Ginsberg. Given the awareness of women’s place in society and issues involving justice, RBJ is a great way to close out the weeklong festival. Other highlights during the seven-day festival include a new film about Ed Asner who is scheduled to appear, as well as works on Olympia Dukakis, Douglas Fairbanks, Frank Capra, Dr. Angela Lauria, Clint Arthur, and others. AmDocs continues to expand its robust education outreach program which

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Washingtonians facing a health emergency rarely have time to consider if the local hospital or doctor is in their insurance network. But they can be hit with steep bills if they aren’t covered. A bill in the Washington state Legislature seeks to address this issue. One of the most common types of surprise billing is known as balance billing, where patients go to a hospital in their network but get care from a physician who is out of network. Dr. Nathan Schlicher is an emergency room physician and a member of the American College
of Emergency Physicians. The group is working on the issue of balance billing. Schlicher says patients shouldn’t be caught in the middle of this issue. “As emergency physicians, we believe that if you feel like you have an emergency and a reasonable, prudent layperson would believe that, then you should seek care and we’ll worry about the finances later,” he states. One in five patients nationwide who go to the ER is hit with a surprise bill, according to a 2017 study in the journal Health Affairs. House Bill 1065, which currently is in the Senate,
would bar patients from being billed for out-of-network services if they’re fully insured and at an in-network hospital or need emergency care. This is state lawmakers’ fourth attempt to address surprise billing. Health care advocate Jason Resendez, a board member of Consumers for Quality Care, says health care is a key issue for voters, especially in Washington state. According to a survey commissioned for his group, 60 percent of Washington voters say health care is the most important issue on their minds and 63 percent say they are frustrated by unexpected hospital bills.
Resendez says hospitals and insurers should deal with this issue, not patients. “And that’s really where this issue should be addressed is between the insurer and the hospital system, figuring out what is fair and what is fair compensation and taking that burden
away from the consumer and patient,” he states. The state Senate held a hearing on HB 1065 last week and an executive session is scheduled for Wednesday. Efforts to address surprise billing are also emerging at the federal level.

Border Patrol Arrests Woman Attempting to Smuggle Meth By Desert Star Staff SALTON CITY, Calif. – El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents working at the Highway 86 immigration checkpoint arrested a woman suspected of smuggling methamphetamine on Saturday. The incident occurred at approximately 5:47 p.m. when a 26-year-old woman driving a black Nissan Altima approached the checkpoint. A Border Patrol canine detection team alerted to the vehicle. Agents sent the car to secondary inspection for further investigation. While in secondary inspection, Border Patrol agents discovered several packages hidden inside the gas tank of the vehicle. Agents determined that the
substance was consistent with the characteristics of methamphetamine. The total weight of the methamphetamine discovered was 43.98 pounds, with an estimated value of $145,100. The woman, a Mexican citizen, the methamphetamine and vehicle were turned over to the Imperial County Sherriff’s Office Border Crime Suppression Team. Records Show CT Cops Helping ICE By Desert Star Staff HARTFORD, Ct. — Recently released records show that eight lawenforcement agencies in Connecticut are helping federal immigration authorities with their surveillance efforts. The records, released by the American Civil Liberties Union, showed agencies in Fairfield, Westport, Enfield, Wethersfield, Stratford, Trumbull, Norwalk and at Southern Connecticut State University are providing location information from license plate readers to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. According to David McGuire, executive director at the ACLU of Connecticut, that’s a potential violation of the state’s 2013 TRUST Act, which seeks to protect immigrants by limiting local law enforcement’s cooperation with ICE. “What this revelation shows is that people’s very sensitive location data is being shared with federal authorities,” McGuire said. “And that puts a vulnerable population in
the crosshairs of ICE unnecessarily in our mind.” Officials in Norwalk said there is no agreement with ICE, and it appears ICE has been accessing a cloudbased law-enforcement database used by the Norwalk Police Department. McGuire pointed out that use of license plate reading technology is spreading rapidly, and Connecticut is considering using license plate readers to collect tolls. That means drivers’ precise locations may be monitored dozens of times a day. “The data creates a very, very detailed digital dossier on every driver in Connecticut,” McGuire observed. “And now we know driving locations and histories are being shared with ICE, and that is very, very problematic.” He said if lawmakers approve legislation to use license plate readers for toll collection, they must adopt strong privacy protections to ensure that data is not used for other purposes. There is pending legislation that would close
loopholes in the TRUST Act, but McGuire noted attempts to limit the ability of local law enforcement to cooperate with ICE have run into stiff opposition from the Connecticut Chiefs of Police Association.
“This report really highlights the need for control over the way police use surveillance technology here,” he said. “And the state of Connecticut needs to step up and pass laws to limit this kind of data sharing.”
The ACLU report said more than 80 local law enforcement agencies from more than a dozen states have agreed to share license plate location data with ICE.
By Desert Star Staff CHEYENNE, Wyo. – AARP has launched a federal and state level campaign to stop drug companies from price gouging. Sam Shumway, state director of AARP Wyoming, says the cost of health insurance in Wyoming ranks in the top five nationally, largely as a result of rising drug prices. The average Medicare beneficiary has a median income of $26,000, but
Shumway says people with chronic conditions are paying more than $13,000 a year out-of-pocket for medicine. “There are people who are making these tough decisions, whether to buy food or whether to pay for their prescription drugs,” he states. “And so we’re calling on Congress, we’re calling on state legislators to take action, to get the exorbitant and out-of-control drug prices under control.” A recent AARP poll found
that more than 70 percent of likely voters age 50 and older are concerned about drug costs, and 90 percent say Congress should reverse rules banning Medicare from negotiating for lower prices. Drug companies have long argued that high profit margins are necessary for research and development, and say those investments have led to significant innovations. Shumway notes that because pharmaceutical
companies also are able to leverage tax dollars through federal grants and public universities, there needs to be transparency and accountability. “Show what your research and development costs are,” he stresses. “Show us what you’re spending on advertising and let’s make sure that you’re not fleecing the public. “They’re making billions of dollars. They should be able to make money, but not on the backs of people who can least
afford to pay for these drugs.” The campaign also calls for giving state attorneys general the authority to crack down on large price increases, and closing loopholes that keep lower cost generic drugs off the market. In 2015, Medicare beneficiaries spent $27 billion in out-of-pocket drug costs. Nationally, the U.S. spends twice as much on health care as other comparable countries.

“Lackawanna Blues”--A Heartfelt Tribute
‘Lackawanna Blues,” written, performed and directed by Ruben SantiagoHudson, is a loving tribute to his surrogate mother, Rachel Crosby. But he and all the people she took under her wing simply called her “Nanny.” Her mission in life was to serve the Lord and help others in need. And many troubled souls crossed her path including one abandoned little boy. In his on-stage memoir the gifted Santiago-Hudson, a Tony-winning actor, morphs into the countless individuals he knew in his youth when he was under the care of his “Nanny” in Lackawanna, a city in upstate, New York, not far from Buffalo. Joining him on stage, guitarist Chris Thomas King provides background music for the stories. And several times Santiago-Hudson whips out his harmonica and plays along with King. His stories vary from humorous and touching to frightening. He begins as Ol’ Po Carl, an elderly former Negro Leagues baseball player who punctuates his conversation with malaprops
like “ the Entire State Building.“ Po Carl also informs us that his whiskey drinking could give him “roaches of the liver.” Then on the serious side, Santiago-Hudson becomes a little boy, telling us he was taken in by “Nanny” when she learned that his real mother constantly left him all alone in one of her rooming houses. For him getting this new “Nanny” mother was the best thing that ever happened to him. He loved her dearly till the day she died. And this beautiful tribute shows us that his love for her will be a part of his life forever. Watching SantiagoHudson slip from one character to another with seamless grace and ease is not only entertaining, but it’s also a master-class in acting. As he stands there on stage alone, we can visualize e very person he becomes. There is such a sweetness in his voice as he brings Nanna back to life, not only with the loving or funny things she said but also by her movements that include dancing and having fun with her friends and boarding house renters. She not only
cooked fantastic soul food for them, which he describes in tasty detail, but she also fed many others who were down on their luck if they crossed her path. She also slipped money to folks who were desperate and needed a little help to get by. She trusted them to pay her back if and when they could. She also
gave loving advice based on the gospel and helped one mistreated woman escape from her abusive husband. Above all she made one little boy feel loved and special. “Lackawanna Blues,” at the Mark Taper Forum, 135 N. Grand Ave., L.A., ends April 21, 2019. Tickets: $30$109 (subject to change).

Grant Helps Domestic-Violence Survivors Counter Financial Abuse By Desert Star Staff BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A shelter in Bowling Green will be able to help more women fleeing abusive relationships afford safe housing, thanks to a grant of more than $500,000 by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Tori Henninger, executive director of Barren River Area Safe Space, or BRASS, says various forms of financial
abuse and previous property damage, or eviction from violence in the home, often accompany intimate partner violence and can make it impossible for survivors to qualify for rental housing. Henninger says the grant money from HUD will be used to help pay security deposits and rent, preventing many women and children in Kentucky
from becoming homeless. “Something that a lot of people don’t realize, is the immensity of financial abuse that occurs within intimate partner violence,” she states. “A lot of victims or survivors, they might have bad credit – so, their abuser may have opened credit cards in their names and not paid them.” According to the National Network to End Domestic Violence, financial abuse occurs in 99 percent of domestic violence cases, but one study found that 78 percent of Americans don’t recognize financial abuse as a form of
intimate partner abuse. Last year, the Kentucky Coalition Against Domestic Violence helped more than 4,000 survivors find housing. Henninger says the prospect of being homeless is just one of the economic factors that keeps many women from leaving an abusive partner, or force them to return to the relationship. “And it’s probably one of the things that keeps a person feeling most stuck, because there is at least a consistency and knowledge of knowing where you’re going to sleep that night, where you’re clothes

“The Mustang” – A Stirring Look At a Horse Training Prison Program
Myles (Bruce Dern) gives the inmates/horse trainers final instructions on the upcoming auction. Photo courtesy of Focus Features Director Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre makes her very impressive directing debut with a fascinating feature and has gifted moviegoers with a profoundly mesmerizing film. Co-written by the director with Mona Fastvold and Brock Norman Brock in collaboration with Benjamin Charbit, “The Mustang” is a deep, penetrating look into a popular prison program. In some prisons in the American West whereby wild Mustangs are rounded up via a helicopter hovering overhead, forcing the galloping herd into prison holding areas where they will be assigned an inmate to train them for auction. Beginning with the opening shot of the wild herd running for their lives, the director weaves a haunting story of rehabilitation and redemption, which will keep you mesmerized up until the very last frame. “The Mustang” is based
on real events and revolves around the character of Roman Coleman, brilliantly played by Matthias Schoenaerts. He is a hopelessly lost soul serving time for domestic violence in the Northern Nevada Correctional Center as a result of inflicting such bodily harm on his wife, that she is barely out of a vegetative state. There is intense fury locked inside of him that at his prison interview, conducted by the prison psychologist, sympathetically played by Connie Britton; he remarked that “I don’t do well around people.” He is a total loner disconnected from any ability to interact with anyone and speaks only when forced to, at which point one can see the pain and reluctance he goes through to say even a simple “yes” or “no.” Roman’s inability to communicate is not lost on his 16-year-old pregnant daughter Martha, nicely played by Gideon Adlon.
It’s a rocky start for Roman (Matthias Schoenaerts) and his horse Marquis. Photo courtesy of Focus Features
Witnessing the beating of her mother, she has nothing but disdain for her father. She visits him in prison where he is not happy to see her and says, “What the f##ck are you doing here?” She wants him to sign off on a deed to her grandmother’s house so she can sell it and use the money to buy a business with her boyfriend. However, at first her father refuses, but as he gets more and more involved with his horse, as well as attending anger management classes, feelings come up for him that have been cemented
shut for decades. He asks his daughter to come to revisit him so he can sign the papers and try to establish communication with her going forward. Wanting to work by himself, Roman is assigned to clean up horse manure in and around the stables where the wild Mustangs are being housed awaiting a 90-day training regimen after which they will be auctioned off to the local townspeople. Unlike the other horses that are in outdoor corrals, there is one horse that is locked away, neighing, rearing up on his hind
legs, and continually kicking the walls. Roman is drawn to this misfit of a horse who, like himself, is totally violent and antisocial. Myles, play by crusty Bruce Dern, who gives a solid performance, is in charge of the prison horse-training program. He decides to assign the training of this difficult horse to the maladjusted prisoner, and although they may be kindred souls at heart, this horse and man are off to an extremely rocky start, resulting in some mutual bodily bruising, Continues on Page 13

rom dark and moody to vibrant and bold, colorful design is gaining favor among homeowners ditching safe, neutral palettes to create more daring, dramatic spaces. Decorating with deeply saturated colors can be intimidating. Explore these ideas to welcome more bold colors into your home and create inviting spaces for living and entertaining.
Walls of color
Say goodbye to beige and embrace the bold color trend by enhancing walls with hues that make a statement. The trick is to avoid making colors so loud that the space loses its stylish appeal. Bold doesn’t necessarily mean bright, so look for muted variations of the shades you prefer. Also remember that when it comes to design, there is such a thing as too much. If painting all the walls in a space will close it in or make it feel lost in the dark, try adding color in more subtle ways, such as an accent wall (or two), or painting the ceiling as your accent. Another option for implementing vibrant wall color: stick to smaller rooms, where the bold look is less likely to be overwhelming.
Illuminate color with natural light
When decorating with statement colors, remember that lighting can make a significant difference in the overall aesthetic. In addition to lighting fixtures, be sure to incorporate plenty of natural light to bring out the best in those bold hues. To bring natural light deeper into the space, consider skylights as an option with a solution such as Velux No Leak Solar Powered Fresh Air Skylights, which can bathe the space in natural light and open to bring in fresh air. Another smart way to capture natural light is by installing an option like Sun Tunnel skylights. With their low-profile design, they create a sleek appearance, and installation is also quick and easy. Learn more at whyskylights.com.
Bold furnishings
An often overlooked but essential component of design is the furniture. Creating a colorful, inviting room doesn’t stop with the walls and floors; what’s in the room can bring the colors to life. Think of the space and all its contents, not just the architectural components, as your canvas for creating the space you envision. If you’re hesitant to invest in a pricy couch in a trendy hue, a compromise might come in the form of a richly colored accent table or chair.
Creative cabinetry
Traditional wood grain cabinetry sometimes gives way to far more creative color schemes in kitchens and bathrooms. While white is still a

UNEXPECTED POPS OF COLOR Designers often talk about adding pops of color to bring together a palette, but there are no real rules about where those color enhancements can or should be. Introducing vibrant color in unexpected places can be an especially impactful way to stylize a room. One example is with a skylight blind, which provides a decorative element while also allowing for light control. If you prefer a trendy option like combining dark colors with metallic accents, consider options such as a metallic gold skylight blind from Velux to connect to the room decor below. More than 80 color and pattern choices heighten the drama of a skylight blind, and you can choose from features like room darkening, light filtering and Venetian-style blinds to add function as well.
popular choice, and can even be considered bold in the right setting, true color on cabinets is also gaining traction among homeowners. With the right backsplash, countertops and flooring, you can safely install cabinets in a uniform color throughout the kitchen, but another on-trend option is to reserve the color for an island base or just one wall of cabinets. You could even mix and match colors on the tops and bottoms. Detail elements like the hardware provide another opportunity for a bold look. You can enhance the room’s design with standout pulls that lend extra vibrance to the space.
Fabric with flair
Textiles provide nearly unlimited options to balance a bold design. Using lighter fabrics for elements such as draperies, upholstery, rugs and decorative pillows can soften the feel of a room with bold tones. Look for subtle patterns that pull in hints of the deeper hue to bring the look together, or simply coordinate shades from complementary color families.

MUSIC
BY ROBERT KINSLER
Master songwriters shine on new releases
Americana, blues and country music is celebrated on a trio of essential new titles. Artist: Gary Clark Jr. Title: This Land (Warner Bros. Records) You might like if you enjoy: Eric Gales, Walter Trout, Jimi Hendrix Tell me more: Some years ago genre-busting bluesrock great Walter Trout told this writer that if blues music was to survive and thrive that artists would have to push the boundaries of the genre forward continually. Listening to the latest masterwork from Austin-born singer-songwriter/ guitar virtuoso Gary Clark Jr. is to hear how right Trout was; across the brilliant “This Land” the GRAMMY Award-winning artist proves
the secret of keeping blues alive and relevant comes via stunning musical excellence and a forceful ability to tap into real-world experience to keep it all real. The rousing title track that leads off the 17-track disc is aimed squarely at President Trump, and modern-day racism as Clark sings “(Expletive) you, I’m America’s son / This is where I come from,” before reinforcing his resolve “This land is mine.” The song’s explosive finale features a mix of gospel vocals and fiery guitar work. Other songs extol a spirit of self-discovery (notably “I Walk Alone” and “Low Down Rolling Stone”) that is never less than inspired. Elsewhere, Clark taps into more gentle regions of his world; the retro-styled soul gem “When I’m Gone”
and beautiful R&B ballad “Pearl Cadillac” are among my favorites. It doesn’t hurt that Clark can play his guitar as well as any blues rocker today and can sing with the force of Sam Cooke one moment and soulful grace of a young Al Green the next. Information: GaryClarkJr.com. Artist: Ted Russell Kamp Title: Walkin’ Shoes (PoMo Records) You might like if you enjoy: Waylon Jennings, Dwight Yoakam, Shooter Jennings Tell me more: Listening to singer-songwriter Ted Russell Kamp’s new LP “Walkin’ Shoes” is to be swept up in the artist’s life spent playing music and touring the world in search – and celebration – of the perfect show. The
original songs splashed across the album capture the freewheeling lifestyle of a career musician. Tracks such as “Home Away From Home,” “Paid By the Mile,” “This Old Guitar” and “Highway Whisper” evoke the reflective experience of life spent on the road. The rowdy countrified rocker “Tail Light Shine,” yearning Americana ballad “Freeway Mona Lisa” and joyful Southern rocker “Roll On Through the Night” bolster the road-ready mindset chronicled on the terrific “Walkin’ Shoes.” Kamp uses his wide range of bona fide talents on bass, guitar, keyboards, horns and percussion in support of his resonant baritone vocals on the outstanding 13-song release. Information: TedRussellKamp.com.
Artist: Leroy Jodie Pierson Title: Rusty Nail (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: Mississippi Fred McDowell, Robert Johnson, Son House Tell me more: This week will see the release of a deluxe, expanded 30th-anniversary reissue of bluesman Leroy Jodie Pierson’s 1988 “Rusty Nail.” Lovers of traditional Delta blues and modern Americana will all find reasons to love this excellent disc, which features a mix of reworked classics and original material performed by Pierson, Geoffrey Sietz (drums, fiddle) and Russell Horneyer (bass). Among the great Pierson-penned cuts on the disc are the uptempo title track, slide guitar-adorned “Long Lonesome Road” and tradition-minded “Easy Rider.” His approach in revisiting his own heroes’ work reaches its wonderful zenith on versions of Mississippi Fred McDowell’s “Highway 61” and “Write Me a Few Lines.” Pierson’s shining fretwork astounds on the instrumental “Mole’s Moan.” Among the previously-unreleased bonus tracks is a joyful take on Eddie Cochran’s “Twenty Flight Rock” and Pierson’s own rockabilly-tinged standout “Far and Wide.” Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams Goes Dairy-Free By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio, -Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams is shaking up the dairy-free game forever with the launch of its first dairy-free product line nationwide today. As with all of Jeni’s imaginative flavors, its take on a dairyfree frozen dessert is so satisfyingly delicious, even steadfast dairy lovers will love them. The collection is available now in Jeni’s Scoop Shops nationwide and online. WHAT MAKES JENI’S DAIRY-FREE DIFFERENT? A few years ago, Jeni’s set out to make the best dairy-free ice cream in the world. They tried all the trendy ingredients (pea proteins, algae, nut milks). Not one lived up to their standards of flavor and quality. Taking a step back, Jeni’s realized their premise was all wrong because it’s
impossible to ask ingredients that are not milk or cream to act like milk or cream. They returned to the roots of what it is they do every single day: source the best ingredients they can find and use their expertise to make them shine. Which is how Jeni’s came to use pure coconut cream—the most delicate and delicious part of the coconut and the reason Jeni’s new flavors are so impossibly creamy. And it means these flavors are as enjoyable licked from a cone as they are from a spoon. Says Jeni Britton Bauer, “This is dairy-free ice cream that’s not jealous of dairy, made by people who love dairy. Bringing people together is the core of what Jeni’s is all about — building and inspiring our community. And we’re excited to be able to offer the
pleasure of ice cream to our dairy-free, vegan and dairyloving friends.” View the video here to hear more from Jeni. SO SPECTACULAR THEY NEVER NEEDED DAIRY Jeni’s launches its collection with four cravable flavors, Dark Chocolate Truffle, Cold Brew with Coconut Cream, Texas Sheet Cake and Roasted Peanut Butter & Strawberry Jam. From the sophisticated and ethereal flavors of Dark Chocolate Truffle to the light and bright Slingshot Coffee-infused Cold Brew with Coconut Cream, the savory Roasted Peanut Butter & Strawberry Jam with a hint of sea salt and the decadent Texas Sheet Cake with chocolate cake crumbles, bittersweet fudge and palate-gripping cocoa, Jeni’s dairy-free collection offers something for everyone.
Twitter erupts after Fox News host Jeanine Pirro kicked off the air
14
By Desert Star Staff Social media users have responded with joy, anger, and mandatory memes after Fox News host Jeanine Pirro was booted from the airwaves on Saturday, one week after she hinted Congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s Muslim faith was un-American. Pirro’s weekly program, ‘Justice,’ was replaced by a rerun of a documentary series, sparking a flurry of speculation that Fox News had pulled the plug on the conservative firebrand. In a rare move, the network condemned Pirro, a former New York prosecutor, after she questioned the patriotism of left-leaning Muslim Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. “Is her adherence to this Islamic doctrine indicative of her adherence to Sharia law, which is antithetical to the US Constitution?” Pirro asked during the broadcast. Fox said the comments “do not reflect those of the network and we have addressed the matter with her directly,” while several advertisers have reportedly cut ties with the show. Curiously, Pirro hasn’t tweeted since last Saturday. The network has refused to comment about whether the host is facing a suspension or even termination. A spokesperson told CNN that Fox wouldn’t comment on “internal scheduling matters.” The schedule change was met with a colorful mix of applause, disappointment, and of course, meme-dipped snark. “Let’s all say a prayer for the poor bartender that Jeanine Pirro is berating right now,” joked former theater agent Roland Scahill. Others found creative ways to say that they wouldn’t miss Pirro’s voice on television.

“Jeanine Pirro always sounds like she’s dictating a one-star Yelp review for a plastic surgeon into her phone while driving to divorce court,” quipped another blue check-marked pundit. Still, others took the news more seriously. “@JudgeJeanine wasn’t merely Islamophobic; she mentioned that wearing a hijab is Unconstitutional/illegal in the USA – and this woman is meant to be Judge in US Courts? She should be fired by her lack of understanding of US law and rights,” wrote journalist Patrick Henningsen. Not everyone was celebrating Pirro’s removal from the airwaves, however. Infowars reporter and proud MAGA hat-wearer Millie Weaver argued that the television host had said nothing wrong. “Judge Jeanine Pirro was correct that the US Constitution & Sharia Law are incompatible,” Weaver tweeted. Pirro’s conservative fan base was also up-in-arms. “We stand with @ JudgeJeanine !! @FoxNews do not give in to leftists’ hate,” wrote conservative author Janie Johnson. Even Donald Trump weighed in on the scandal, with the US president claiming that the “radical left Democrats” were trying to “silence” the “majority of our country.” The Fox News host is far from the first talking head to face blowback for purportedly crude remarks. Fox News alum Megyn Kelly was shown the door by NBC after getting grilled for comments she made about blackface Halloween costumes. She still received $30 million as part of her exit deal, so everyone lived happily ever after. www.desertstarweekly.com

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Planning Commission will conduct a Public Hearing to consider Amendments to Conditional Use Permit Nos. 16-16 & 17-16. The Public Hearing will be held as follows: DATE: Tuesday, April 9, 2019 TIME: 6:00 P.M. (or as soon thereafter as the matter may be heard) LOCATION: Carl May Community Center 11711 West Drive, Desert Hot Springs, California, 92240 CASE(S): CUP Nos. 16-16 & 17-16 Amendments LOCATION: The project site is located east of Little Morongo Road and north of Two Bunch Palms Trail in the Light Industrial (I-L) Zone. APN: 663280-003 & -004.
APPLICANT/REPRESENTATIVE: Pioneer General Engineer Contractor, Inc. PROPOSAL: Pioneer General Engineer Contractor Inc., is requesting amendments to Conditional Use Permit Nos. 1616 & 17-16 to increase the size of the originally approved Cannabis Cultivation facility, merge two adjacent parcels to allow the construction of a one (1) two-story cultivation facility and make modifications from the previously approved site and floor plan. ENVIRONMENTAL DETERMINATION: Pursuant to Section 15072 of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) Statutes & Guidelines, an Initial Study/Draft Mitigated Negative Declaration has been prepared for the project described herein. The applicant Pioneer General Engineering Contractors Inc., (formerly known as the Maddox Cultivation Project) revised the previously adopted Mitigated Negative Declaration (MND) since there were substantial changes to the project that warranted additional review. This Initial Study was undertaken for the purpose of deciding whether the project may have a significant effect on the environment. On the basis of the Initial Study, city staff has concluded that the project will have a significant effect on the environment, but that mitigation measures imposed will reduce impacts to less than significant levels and has therefore prepared a Draft Mitigated Negative Declaration & mitigation monitoring program. The Initial Study/Draft MND has been accepted by the City and reflects the independent judgement of the City. On April 9, 2019, the Planning Commission, at the public hearing or during deliberations, may recommend approval, denial, or propose changes to the project or to the environmental determination. Availability of Environmental Documents: A copy of the Draft Initial Study and Mitigated Negative Declaration and related documents are available for review at the Community Development Department at the City of Desert Hot Springs City Hall, 65950 Pierson Boulevard, Desert Hot Springs, California 92240 between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. INTERESTED PERSONS MAY appear and be heard, or written comments may be submitted prior to the Public Hearing(s). Written comments will be made a part of the public record. The public comment period of the environmental documents will begin on Wednesday, March 20th, 2019, and end on Tuesday, April 9th, 2019 at 5 p.m. If this matter should at some future date go to court, court testimony may be limited to only those issues raised at the public hearing described in this notice, or in written correspondence delivered to the City of Desert Hot Springs, at or prior to, the public hearing. All information regarding the proposed project is available for public review at the City of Desert Hot Springs City Hall, 65950 Pierson Boulevard, during regular business hours (Monday through Thursday, 7:00 AM - 6:00 PM). Playing the Trump card: 5 controversial presidential vetoes
By Desert Star Staff By issuing his first veto, Donald Trump has emulated past presidents, many of whom exercised their legislationblocking powers under dubious pretexts. US history is rife with controversial vetoes. Trump sparked the ire of Congress on Friday after he announced that he would not sign a resolution which would overturn his declared ‘state of emergency’ over the US-Mexico border. The House is expected to vote on March 26 to override the veto, although it’s unlikely that lawmakers can muster the necessary two-thirds majority in both chambers. While Speaker Nancy Pelosi has accused Republican members of Congress of engaging in “partisan hypocrisy,” the plain truth is
that presidential administrations from both major parties have used the veto power to block – and preserve – deeply divisive laws and dictates. 1. Nixon gives thumbs down to national childcare t may be hard for most American parents to fathom, but they were once just a signature away from being entitled to universal, federallysubsidized child care. Congress passed the Comprehensive Child Development Bill in 1971, but President Richard Nixon axed the law, tapping into Cold War hysteria by arguing that a national daycare system would create a “communal approach to child-rearing.” 2. Ford opposes greater government transparency In 1974, Nixon’s successor, Gerald Ford, issued one of history’s most ironic
presidential vetoes. Ford, who assumed office after Nixon resigned following the Watergate scandal, attempted to block a bill that would strengthen the Freedom of Information Act. Known as FOIA, the bill was first enacted in 1967 and designed to make it easier for citizens to obtain government records. Despite his government secrecy-preserving objections, Congress was able to override Ford’s veto, enshrining the upgraded FOIA into law. 3. Reagan denounces ‘economic warfare’ against apartheid South Africa Washington’s unapologetic fondness for imposing sanctions on countries deemed insubordinate has caused rifts in the international community. But there was a time when the United States was far less
trigger-happy when it came to reprimanding foreign nations. In 1986, Ronald Reagan vetoed the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act, which would have placed sanctions on South Africa’s proapartheid government. Reagan claimed that the legislation would amount to “economic warfare” – an argument which didn’t convince lawmakers. Congress overrode his veto and imposed the sanctions. 4. Bill Clinton defends ‘partial-birth’ abortions The endless debate over abortion reached a fever pitch in 1996 when President Bill Clinton struck down a bill that would have prohibited doctors from performing “partial-birth abortion,” a type of late-term abortion. He defended his decision by arguing that such procedures
could be life-saving for women with high-risk pregnancies. The veto, however, enraged conservatives and further aggravated the ‘pro-life’ vs. ‘pro-choice’ battle. 5. Obama tries to bat away 9/11 lawsuits aimed at Saudis President Barack Obama was behind one of the more curious vetoes in recent history. In 2016, the outgoing president vetoed a bill that would have allowed the families of 9/11 victims to sue the government of Saudi Arabia for complicity in the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. Obama said the legislation could pose a threat to national security, but Democrats and Republicans in both the House and the Senate ignored his concerns and overturned his veto.
Report: Many Poor Ohioans Lack Safe, Affordable Place to Call Home By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio – Housing is a foundation for living, and a new report suggests it’s an unstable foundation for hundreds of thousands of Ohioans. “The Gap: A Shortage of Affordable Rental Homes” by the National Low Income Housing Coalition, finds that 67 percent of the state’s extremely low-income renter households are spending more than half their income on rent. Bill Faith, executive director of the Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio, explains that’s more than 290,000 families that have to make difficult decisions in order to keep a roof over their heads. “So that just means for those folks that other needs of the household are going to go wanting,” he states. “Whether or not they have enough food to eat, gas money to put into the car, health care costs and things of that nature.” The coalition considers people “extremely low-
income” if they make only 30 percent of their area’s median income, and in Ohio, only 43 rental units are available and affordable for every 100 of these households. Gov. Mike DeWine is calling for increased investments for affordable housing, and his budget proposes increasing funding for the Ohio Housing Finance Agency by 4.5 percent over the next two years. Faith commends DeWine for prioritizing investments in children during his administration. However, he notes that children are among the fastest growing segments of the state’s homeless population. “Last year, over 21,000 children entered the homeless system in the state including 3,000 babies under the age of one, which is a 53 percent increase over the last five years,” Faith points out. The coalition is calling for a $20,000 annual expansion of the Ohio Housing Trust Fund, which helps low-

Faith says the Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio also has asked the governor to allocate $25 million in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families funds for local programs that quickly move families in crisis into permanent housing.
“If we’re really serious about providing a decent, safe, affordable place for people to recover from addiction problems, to raise a healthy baby, or even folks that need to hold down a job or to do better in school, there’s nothing that helps more than to have a safe, decent place to call home,” he states.
The report also notes that federal investments are needed for programs such as the National Housing Trust Fund, Housing Choice Vouchers and public housing. Reporting by Ohio News Connection in association with Media in the Public Interest, and funded in part by The George Gund Foundation.
but said that more people involved in the attacks might be out there. They advised all mosques in New Zealand to lock their doors and for people
to refrain from going there. A video also emerged online, apparently filmed by an attacker at one of the mosques. Police urged people not to share the footage and said they were actively trying to remove it from public access. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern addressed the nation, calling the situation “one of New Zealand’s darkest days.” She said many of the victims were likely refugees who found a home in the country. “They are us. The person who has perpetuated this violence against us is not.” Footage emerged of what appears to be the arrest of a suspect in the shootings. Police rammed their car into another vehicle on Brougham Street before apprehending the driver. Prime Minister Ardern said the tragic events “can
now only be described as a terrorist attack.” The death toll was soon updated by Police Commissioner Mike Bush, who said 49 people were confirmed dead. Commissioner Bush reported that four people had been taken into custody – three men and one woman. “We are not aware of other people, but we cannot assume there are no others at large,” he said. He also confirmed that the attackers had improvised explosive devices. Police secured them when seizing the suspects’ vehicles, he said. An outpouring of condolences and support came from across New Zealand and other nations. Australian PM Scott Morrison confirmed that one of the men arrested in New Zealand is an Australian citizen.
New Zealand mosque attacks: How Christchurch massacre unfolded
By Desert Star Staff New Zealand experienced one of the worst instances of extremist violence in its history on Friday when 49 people were gunned down at two mosques in Christchurch. This is how the tragic events unfolded. The first reports of multiple gunshots in Christchurch, the largest city on New Zealand’s South Island, came in around 1:40 pm local time. Police deployed armed officers in response. Witnesses soon pinpointed the scene of the attack as the Masjid Al Noor mosque on Deans Avenue, a street that serves as the eastern border of the centermost part of the city. A man armed with an automatic rifle and wearing a bulletproof vest and helmet was reported entering the building and opening fire at random people.

Police cordoned off the central part of the city and advised people to stay indoors, saying the “evolving situation” remained dangerous. Officers cleared Deans Avenue and Hagley Park, which is located just east of it. A heavy police presence was reported around the Christchurch hospital in the eastern part of the park. Police action was also reported in the Linwood neighborhood 5km east of the Masjid Al Noor mosque, with some people injured. It soon emerged that another mosque, the Linwood Masjid, located in the area, also came under attack at about 1:45 pm. The shooter was described as a man wearing a black motorcycle helmet and camouflage clothing armed with an assault rifle. About two hours into the incident, police confirmed that a suspect was in custody,

CVREP of Cathedral City premieres the musical “Chess” in their new venue
By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association Whoever said that East is East (think Broadway) and West is West (think the vibrant West Coast theatre scene) and the twain that would never meet was dead wrong! The twain, did indeed, meet arriving in the form of a triumphant production of the musical “CHESS” produced by CVREP on its brand spanking new 2 Million-dollar, state of the art theatre in Cathedral City on March 15, 2019. CVREP Artistic Director Ron Celona’s dream of bringing quality, Equity, professional live theatre productions to the greater Palm Springs area became a reality last Friday with a star-studded audience of actors, producers, sponsors, and donors plus a loyal cadre patrons of CVREP attending the grand opening. The champagne flowed before the performance and flowed again at the after-party accompanied by platters of shrimp and a variety of tasty, scrumptious canapes (with nary a calorie in any of the food, yeah, sure). It was a glorious evening that was several years in the making, but the result is a stunning Broadway-like venue of comfortable 208 seats to please even the fussiest of theatre-goers. CVREP’s Artistic Director Ron Celona, who also directs the maiden voyage production in CVREP’s permanent new home, was over-the-moon, with the standing ovations received from the audience that is richly deserved. “CHESS,” is a musical written by three giants of the Broadway stage: librettist Richard Nelson, lyricist Tim Rice, and a musical score composed by two members of the worldfamous Swedish pop music group ABBA: Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson. The story is set in 1968 during the European ‘cold war’ period in Bangkok, Thailand and in Budapest, Hungary. The United States and the Soviet Union are still engaging in bragging rights in the game of diplomacy and politics. However, tensions exist, and it’s still a dangerous
time period for both sides, and anyone caught in the middle. The musical is loosely based on the 1972 world chess match between American Bobby Fisher and Russian Boris Spassky, held in Iceland. Librettist Nelson spices up his fictional chess match between Freddie, the American challenger (Intentionally and cockily played by Garrett Marshall) and Anatoly, the reigning world champion Grand Master from Russia (David Sattler, a wonderful rich baritone who can act). As the two men meet to lay down the rules for the match with match arbiter/ referee Jeremy Whatley. Anatoly catches the eye of Freddie’s agent Florence (a beautiful Gabriella Carrillo, and the possessor of a lovely voice). Sparks fly, as they say, between Anatoly and Florence, and had Shakespeare been the author of this beautiful musical the audience would be watching “Romeo and Juliet.” But the lyrics of Tim Rice and the music of Ulvaeus and Andersson more than makeup for the absence of the Bard in this enjoyable production. The performers in “CHESS” are multi-talented and deliver strong support. Michael Dotson as Molokov, the KBG agent in charge and acting as a faux tour guide/interpreter, is especially effective, as is Glenn Rosenbaum as Walter, a U.S. diplomat trying to keep all of the Americans focused on why they are in Bangkok and Budapest on this world chess match good relations tour. Tensions rise when Anatoly’s wife Svetlana (a statuesque Ashley Hunt) arrives in Budapest, and the love triangle of Anatoly, Florence, and Svetlana have decisions to make. There are many twists and turns in the production that predicting the outcome may not be as easy as one would think. Come see it for yourself; it’s a crowd-pleaser. There are 28 songs and dance numbers in the production’s ensemble unit that deliver solid support to the principles and the supporting cast. I found the song standouts to be a dance number with Freddie and the ensemble in a number entitled “One Night in Bangkok,” and “Terrace Duet,” that is nicely sung and rendered by Ms.
