Roger Federer and Champion Novak Djokovic
Flavia Pennetta and Novak Djokovic win big at the BNP Paribas Open Tennis Tournament Story and photos by Pat Krause The BNP Paribas Open Tennis Tournament broke attendance records again this year. This is the 8th straight year that attendance records have been broken. 431,527 tennis fans attended the two-week sessions and broke another record for Saturdays matches with 31,764 people in attendance. The BNP Paribas is the largest ATP World Tour, and WTA combined.
2015 tickets went on sale on Wednesday, March 19th for the Classic Series and the new Stadium 2 will also offer Classic Series packages. Flavia Pennetta ranked number 21 won her first BNP title by defeating Agnieszka Radwanska. Radwanska was clearly in pain with her knee but continued the match like a true professional. Novak Djokovic captured his 3rd BNP Paribas
Championship by beating Roger Federer in a nail-biter match that went into a tie breaker. Over 16,000 fans really got their moneys worth watching this amazing battle between two true Champion Tennis players. The Bryan Brothers won their second consecutive BNP Paribas Open doubles win by beating number 2 seeded Alexander Peya and Bruno Scores in a quick
By Pat Krause The Palm Springs Art Museum celebrated its 75th anniversary in a big way at the Palm Springs Convention Center on March 15th. White towers lined the driveway, and a big 75th banner crossed the road to the entrance to the Convention Center. Cars going to Valet drove on white and black carpets. Guests entered the Centers lobby under a wall and ceiling of lights that were adorned with flowers. The Gala was sold out again this year.
This special Gala began with cocktails and appetizers, followed by Dinner, Entertainment and Dancing. The entertainment for the evening was provided by Live It Up Productions. A video was shown that detailed the many contributions made by the Art Museum. The Video showed the growth of the Museum and the impact it has made in the Valley. Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Harold Meyerman was honored at the Gala for his magnificent leadership that has seen the dramatic growth
and success under his vision and dedication to the Museum. Gala chairs were Museum Associates Council President, Robert Holland, Jim Casey, Barbara Keller and Harold Matzner. This is the largest Gala the Museum has held with over 800 guests. They also raised the most money, 1.7 million dollars, in their 75-year history. The most raised before was in 2009, which raised 1 million dollars. This Gala is the Museum’s largest fundraiser and benefits the Museum’s exhibition and educational programs.

By Desert Star Staff AUSTIN, Texas, -- The U.S. Postal Service will take center stage on the SXSW Outdoor Stage at Butler Park with the dedication of the Jimi Hendrix Forever Stamp. Widely recognized as one of the most
creative and influential musicians of the 20th century, Hendrix displayed an innovative style that embraced the influences of rock, R&B, modern jazz and the blues, inspiring musical artists of his era and beyond. The Jimi Hendrix Forever

Janie Hendrix, sister to the late Jimi Hendrix, joined Corbett to dedicate the stamp. “I am deeply touched and so are other members of the Hendrix family by the issuance of this stamp, and I wish to thank the United States Postal Service for bestowing one of our nation’s highest honors on my brother

There were performances by guitar luminaries, Wayne Kramer, guitarist for Motor City 5; Slash, former lead guitarist for Guns N’ Roses; Rusty Anderson, lead guitarist for Paul McCartney’s tours; and Perry Farrell, lead singer for Jane’s Addiction. Also, the concert featured Robby Krieger, guitarist for the Doors; Mary Bridget Davies, star of Broadway’s “A Night with Janis Joplin”; Jesse Malin, guitarist/ musician; Dave and Phil Alvin, former guitarists for The Blasters; and Etty Farrell, wife of Perry Farrell and former star of E! reality series, “Married to Rock.” The Postal Service has released numerous stamps to celebrate and honor music
icons who had a big impact on American culture and the music industry. The Jimi Hendrix Forever Stamp kicks off the 2014 Music Icons series, which will include Janis Joplin later this year. The 2013 Music Icons series honored Johnny Cash, Ray Charles and Lydia Mendoza. The new limited-edition Jimi Hendrix stamp, designed by artist Rudy Gutierrez, features a vibrant, colorful design fashioned to evoke the movement and rhythm of the late singer and pay homage to the psychedelic rock era of the 1960s. The stamp pane, designed to resemble a vintage 45 rpm record sleeve, features a painting of Hendrix’s face surrounded by colorful swirls and small icons that reference song lyrics or aspects of Hendrix’s life. The various icons include flowers, a guitar, a mermaid and a butterfly. The stamp art shows Hendrix in performance, wearing one of his trademark vintage military jackets and playing one of his beloved white Fender Stratocaster guitars.

‘American Hustle’ a Reel Winner on DVD
By Theda Kleinhans Reichman “American Hustle” garnered double digit Academy Award nominations, ten total, but came away empty handed on Oscar’s night. That being said, it was a big winner at the SAG Awards, winning for best ensemble performances in a motion picture. It also won a Golden Globe and New York Film Critics Circle Award in the Best-Picture category and received Oscar nominations in all four acting categories and was in contention for finest picture, best director and best screenplay Oscars. All in all, that adds up to one fine dramedy now available on DVD. Director David O. Russell’s

caper is a fictionalized version of the real-life Abscam scandal of the recent past when FBI agents used entrapment techniques to nab corrupt government officials. In the film, Bradley Cooper plays an overly ambitious FBI agent eager to make a name for himself in the Bureau. To do so he enlists the cooperation of two small-time con artists. The con artists in question are Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale) and his clever, classy partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams). Cooper has entrapped these two for scamming, and in return for their cooperation, he will have charges dropped if they help him capture bigger prey— government crooks. The film is lots of fun, and you find yourself really liking Irving, who turns out to be a con artist with a conscience of sorts as well as a good heart, even though he has a bum ticker. Adding to the plot twists and turns are love triangles and the Mafia when the New Jersey mayor Carmine Polito (Jeremy Renner) decides to accept Irving’s help to get money from a rich Arab Sheik (a fake) in order to have funds to revamp Atlantic City, which will bring in jobs, but Polito also brings in the mob in order to make everything work well and profitably. Soon things start to look pretty shaky for Irving, who is caught in the middle. His unpredictable wife, Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence who is absolutely great) could be the spoiler causing everything to collapse. She is jealous and also vengeful because she hates the fact that her husband is in love with his business partner, Amy Adams. The constant
plot twists, romantic ups and downs add tension and fun to the proceedings. The movie is a extreme caper. It is also considerable fun. Perhaps the funniest bit in the entire movie has to do with a microwave oven given as a gift to Irving from his

new-found friend, the mayor. “American Hustle,” like Russell’s “Silver Lining Playbook,” is moving, emotional and truly involving. Although some not an Oscar winner, the film is a winner in every way. From Sony Pictures, rated R for pervasive language,
some sexual content and brief violence. The DVD and Blu-ray have a featurette on the making of “American Hustle” plus deleted scenes.

March Titles Showcase Old and New By Robert Kinsler From the cult rock ‘n’ roll-minded classic “Untamed Youth” to a celebration of R&B and soul featuring a trio of legends and the latest LP from a pioneering cello rock outfit, March is racking up a wealth of sonic riches.

3000: XXIX” (set for release on March 25), a rightful skewering of the 1957 teen exploitation flick “Untamed Youth.” The film not only features early rock ‘n’ roll hero Eddie Cochran (“C’Mon Everybody,” “Summertime Blues”) singing and playing guitar, but has the distinction of boasting the first-ever onscreen performance of a rock song sung by a female (famed actress Mamie Van Doren). To be sure the movie itself is dated and campy, but thanks to the clever work of the writers and performers of MST3K, hilarity ensues. Among the extras on the new collection is an interview
with the aforementioned Van Doren, and the original theatrical trailer for “Untamed Youth.” The other three films that get a well-deserved Satellite of Love treatment include “Hercules And The Captive Women,” “The Thing That Couldn’t Die” and “The Pumaman.” Information: ShoutFactory.com.

By Dan Marinelli COACHELLA VALLEY – For the first time since 2005 and 2006, the Indio High School Rajahs softball team has a chance to win back-to-back DVL titles. Standing in the Rajahs way, as usual, are the seven-time defending DVL champion La Quinta High School Blackhawks – who finished last season tied atop the standings with the Rajahs and the Palm Desert High School Aztecs. Winning or sharing the DVL title is not uncommon for the Blackhawks and Rajahs Indio and La Quinta have won or shared the DVL title each of – at least – the last nine
from the absences of the aforementioned players, with yet another loaded roster, the Blackhawks look like the favorites to take the DVL. This season, La Quinta brings back last year’s DVL leader in wins – junior pitcher Star Padilla. Joining Padilla in 2014 are the Blackhawks top two batters from 2013 – senior Dominique Rivas (.507 avg.) and junior Kelli Finan (.507 avg). The 2014 Blackhawks (0-0 in DVL, 6-4 Overall) have some work to do to play up to par with last year’s team that opened the season 8-0, also making it all the way to the Division 4 CIF-SS quarterfinals. They may be just a hair above .500 in this early season, but the abundance of preseason games the Blackhawks have played will definitely be an experiential advantage when league play starts in two weeks. The Rajahs (0-0 in DVL, 2-5 Overall) have not had an ideal start to the season, too. Indio has had some trouble plating runs this year, only scoring 4.14 runs, per game. Pitching, however, has been the bane of Indio’s first seven games – giving up 10.1 runs a game. Although Indio brings back senior pitcher Amanda Martinez, head coach Marissa Araujo lost the Rajahs best, and arguably the league’s best pitcher from 2013
– Heather Morales. In addition to her pitching, Morales was also the Rajahs best hitter. Despite losing their overall best player to graduation, Indio does return four of its top five batters from last season (Savannah Gaeta, Nicole Romero, Gianna Espinoza and Ashley Oakley). Since 2011, when they finished in fourth place with a 3-5 record in the DVL, the Aztecs have slightly improved each year until finally winning a share of the league title in 2013. Continuing this year’s trend among the DVL’s top teams, the Aztecs (0-0 in DVL, 1-4 Overall) have also had a slow start to 2014. If this season is anything like 2013; Palm Desert should finish strong and make a spirited run at the DVL title. The Aztecs only lost two starting seniors from last year’s championship team. Palm Desert’s head coach Steve Leonhard has top batters Lyzette Huizer, Maya Pollard and Ayanna Murphy returning to help make another run at the league championship. The Cathedral City High School Lions (0-0 in DVL, 3-0 Overall) and last year’s fourth place finishers, the Coachella Valley High School Arabs (0-0 in DVL, 4-2 Overall), have had the hottest starts to the young 2014 season. In spite of their starts, the
Lions and Arabs have not even been in the discussion for DVL’s best since the Lions ended the 2006 season in third, and the Arabs third place finish in 2008. On March 17, Indio traveled to Redlands to take on the Redlands-based Citrus Valley High School Blackhawks in the Redlands Invitational. Indio will also play Redlands Invitational games on March 20 and 22 against teams TBA. Palm Desert played in the Redlands Invitational against Redlands High Terriers on March 17. Later in the week, Palm Desert will play more Redlands Invitational games to be announced later. On March 18, La Quinta welcomed the El Centro-based Central High School Spartans. La Quinta plays another home game on March 22 against California’s No. 15-ranked Riverside Poly High School Bears. On March 18, Cathedral City welcomed the Hemet-based Tahquitz High School Titans to Cathedral City High School. Cathedral City travels to Desert Hot Springs High School to take on the Golden Eagles on March 22. Coachella Valley does not have any games scheduled until their April 4 league opener at home against Cathedral City.

seasons. Prior to 2013, the most recent tie for first between these two schools was in 2009 – when both teams went 13-2 in league. Dating back to 2007, excluding the seasons they shared the league championship, the Rajahs have finished second to the Blackhawks, every year. Head coach Dede Grutz’ Blackhawks lost eight seniors from last year’s team, including Thalia Ortiz – the DVL’s homerun (8) and RBI (54) leader. In addition to Ortiz, the Blackhawks will have to replace pitchers Alyssa Luna and Melanie Rodriguez, both of whom recorded five wins last year. Even with the holes left

It took place on Sunday, March 16th under the big white tent featuring doggie designers with vivid imaginations when it comes to dressing dogs, in all shapes and sizes. While some dogs took to the runway with
a lively gait, others need a bit of coaxing. At the tail end of the event, it was obvious the doggies, from Maltese to mixed breeds rather enjoyed the attention and drama. The event was preceded by cocktails, a silent auction and music. Many guests brought their smartly attired dogs to the show.
