Marines to help clean up DHSHS

Desert Hot Springs, Calif. - 29 Palms Marine Base

Soldiers will help the Desert Hot Springs Beautification Committee clean up a local high school on Saturday, March 25. Marines from the base will arrive at Desert Hot Springs High School starting at 8:00 a.m. to pick up trash, sweep sidewalks, rake leaves, and remove rubbish from the school campus and its perimeter.

“We are so excited that the Marines have stepped up to the plate to help the schools in our community,” said James Nindel, co-chair of the DHS Beautification Committee. This is the second school the Marines have helped out in our community - Two Bunch Palms Elementary School was the first school.

DHSHS has a Junior ROTC program, and the Marines look forward to interacting with the students from that program. Base Academic Director Daniel W. Belew, who is also a Space & Propagation Engineering Officer, said” “this gives the JROTC students a chance to talk to some Marines that have recently completed Boot Camp and are training in a very technologically advanced Primary MOS (job skill). Most JROTC and Poolees only hear about infantry, artillery, etc.”

The Marines, high school students, parents, teachers, and volunteers will start work at 8:00 a.m. The public is invited to come and work alongside the Marines. DHS Mayor Scott Matas will be there along with other city leaders. Refreshments will be provided.
