BNP Parabas Winners
Winner Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer
It was the 38th meeting between four-time BNP champ Roger Federer and last year’s champ Novak Djokovic. Story and Photos by Pat Krause W h a t a t re m e n d o u s BNP Parabas Open Tennis Tournament this year with the top names competing against each other in the finals. Amazing tennis play by everyone and that included the up and coming tennis stars. Each match brought out the best in play for both the winner and the one who lost but would
be back another day to win. Doubles matches held a few surprises when the Number 1 Bryan brothers lost to the finals doubles winners Vasek Pospisil and Jack Sock. Doubles finals were held on Sat. to a sold out crowd. Martina Hingis and Sania Merza won women’s doubles. Fast play is one of the things I like about doubles matches as players are all over the court.
The Semi Finals brought a relative newcomer from Canada to face Federer. Milos Raonick served up some of the fastest aces out there with speeds in the 140 miles per hour range. He will be one to reckon with in a couple years. Djokovic won his semi-final match easier against Andy Murray. Then it was up to the top two men to fight it out for the win and fight they did.
Yesterday Moët & Chandon toasted the men’s semi-finals of the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in sunny Palm Desert. Guests including living legends Goldie Hawn and Ray Liotta, Josh Hartnett and girlfriend Tamsin Egerton, Teen Wolf couple Max Carver and Holland Roden and Beth Behrs (Two Broke Girls) and boyfriend Michael Gladis (Mad Men) toasted victories from both Novak Djokovic and Moët Global Ambassador Roger Federer from the exclusive Moët & Chandon suite. The stars sipped on Moët’s flagship champagne,
Moët Impérial, and cooled down with Moët Ice Impérial - the first champagne created specifically to be served over ice - while they watched the players heat it up on the court. Goldie Hawn was particularly excited to kick off her day of tennis in the suite before heading down to Moët’s box seats for a courtside view of her favorite player, Andy Murray. Though Murray was unable to emerge victorious over Djokovic, the bubbly actress’ energy was not eclipsed by his loss – she made her way back to the suite to catch up with old co-star Ray Liotta, chat with each
and every guest and take in the Federer/Raonic match. Josh Hartnett and Tamsin Egerton also attempted a trip down to the courtside box seats, but retreated to the Moët suite shortly thereafter due to their wardrobe choices that day - Egerton’s leather skirt and Hartnett’s Penny Dreadful-esque entirely black attire apparently didn’t fare so well in the 90-degree heat. The gorgeous, sweaty pair were charmingly affectionate throughout the afternoon, often caught embracing or fetching each other what Hartnett giddily

The crowd was behind Federer as they would stand and cheer and clap loudly after he won a tense volley. One match went to a tiebreaker with Federer winning that one but Djokovic came out the winner for the fourth time at the BNP Parabas. A real feat in itself to win here so many times and tying Federer for that title of four wins here at the BNP. Djokovic won back to back to
tie Federer for that title. The ladies match between Jalena Jankovic lasted well over 2 hours. The long volleys between the two were heart wrenching to watch as each player looked exhausted after a long run before one would make a mistake and win. Simona Halep fought hard to win and become another first Continues on Page 9

Under our State laws, pets are considered personal property and they need special consideration in an estate plan to ensure they receive proper care when their owners can no longer care for them. A Pet Trust can dictate the type of care a pet will receive after its owner is gone and supply funds for that care; it also gives owners peace of mind knowing that their beloved pets will be cared for. By establishing a trust for your pets, you can plan for their care for their life after you can longer care for them. Even if you do have a specific person to care for your pet(s), setting up the Pet Trust is recommended in event of the successor caretaker’s untimely death or health problems. The pet trust will need to hold a certain sum of money to pay for the pet’s care. To determine the amount, first estimate the annual costs of food, veterinary care, routine medications, pet insurance, and supplements, as well as any other recurring costs, and then multiply that by the entire life expectancy of the pet(s). It is also important to factor an extra amount, as your pet’s medical care costs may increase due to age. Be sure to clearly identify each pet. To others, your pet may look like another. A specific description of the pet and its features is necessary, in order to insure and avoid copycat pets. (Because there is money involved,
an unscrupulous caretaker might seek to have payments continue past a pet’s death.). Include a list of microchip numbers and other identifying information in the trust document. Finally, the owner should clearly state in the trust that the care of the pet is the trust’s primary purpose, and that all funds should be used to care for the pet. A remainder beneficiary can be listed for any funds remaining after pet’s death. Some chose a non-profit animal welfare group. In most cases, you will need to designate both a trustee and a caretaker. Consider these
choices carefully. The trustee will be in charge of the money, and will have the legal responsibility to ensure that the money is properly used by the caretaker. You may also want to give the trustee the ability to remove and replace the caretaker, if necessary. The trustee is entitled to compensation, and it is generally a good idea to provide an annual stipend for the caretaker as well. Outline this compensation clearly in the trust. It is important for you to list in detail how the pet should be cared for. Include the name of the preferred veterinarian and the minimum number of vet visits per year, as well as any requirements
for boarding, grooming, pet walking services, toys, treats -even doggie daycare. Using these tips as a guideline for developing a pet trust will ensure that the pet is protected and well cared for.

the other residents? Most of the time, having no direct control over the tenant, the association will call in the landlord for a hearing. The board will impose discipline against the landlord member, on the assumption that the landlord will then rein in the tenant. Some associations try to crack down on tenancies, imposing a cap on the number of rentals in the community. This approach does not deal with the root issue, but tries to limit the extent of the issue. Rental cap imposed in 2012 or later only apply to owners who acquire a residence after the limitation is imposed, per Civil Code 4740. Another approach is to modify the documents and require the tenant to sign an additional promise to the HOA, as a condition of leasing in the association. Such a promise could contain an agreement that the tenant promises to abide by the association rules, and will accept association discipline as if the tenant were a member. This allows the board the choice to call the landlord and/or the tenant for a hearing. Even without the governing documents requiring them to do so, landlords can help by
including in the lease a promise that the tenant will abide by the association rules and use restrictions. As to guests, the association has no option. The only person it can hold responsible when a guest causes trouble or even damages the common area is the member. Tenants and guests should be required by landlord, host, and the association to be good neighbors. The governing documents can be amended to help regarding tenant and guest issues. Remember, even a $50 “speeding ticket” requires a board hearing, under Civil Code 5855. Thanks for your questions, Kelly

Israel – A Magical Journey Back in Time
By Beverly Cohn Recap of Parts One and Two: Part One explored the process of traveling to Israel and hopefully demystified the security process. Part Two covered days one through three of my experience in Israel, which included visits to Yad Vasahem - the National Memorial and Museum of the Holocaust, Old City of Jerusalem, the Western Wall, Mount Zion sites, including King David’s Tomb, the Room of the Last Supper, the Muslim Quarter including the Arab market, Capernaum, the ancient Jewish fishing village where Jesus began his ministry, and so much more. DAY 4: Galilee & Mediterranean Coast After a restful night’s sleep, we were up bright and early and walked across the courtyard to the building that housed an incredible breakfast buffet that literally was spread out over several rooms. With our plates filled with an assortment of delights, we seated ourselves on the deck overlooking the Sea of Galilee. One could not help flashing back to Biblical times during which this famous sea is mentioned so often and think how lucky were to be experiencing this amazing country. Once more in our van, we headed to the northern Sea of Galilee to visit some of the most famous Christian sites, beginning with the Mount of Beatitudes, the historic spot where it is believed Jesus gave

his Sermon on the Mount. The next stop on our trip back in time was to Capernaum, the ancient Jewish fishing village in the Galilee where Jesus began his Ministry. He taught in the local synagogue, which was built around the 1st Century AD, the ruins of which are well preserved and offer a flavor of what it must have been like in its former splendor. There was so much history to take in, but luckily the drive from Capernaum across the Galilee to Haifa, our next destination, gave us time to absorb this riveting experience. We arrived in Haifa, Israel’s third largest city with a commercial port and home to the magnificent Baha’i Shrine and Gardens – World Center of the Baha’i Faith. People from all over the world come to Haifa to visit the second holiest shrine of that faith, whose belief system seeks to break down barriers of race, creed, and nationality, and unite all religions and cultures. We continued driving along the Mediterranean coast to Caesarea National Park, site of the remains of Crusader City, the former Roman capital. Looking at the preserved vestiges of a Roman theatre, bathhouse, and hippodrome, one could almost hear the roar of racing chariots. Needing a little down time on the way to Tel Aviv, some of us closed our eyes and allowed our imaginations to sift through what we had just seen. For most of us, we have had only a cinematic; Charlton Heston frame of Biblical references, but to see these historic ruins up close brings the experience to new, palpable heights. Once in Tel Aviv, we checked into Carlton Hotel and then we were off to a late lunch at the Wilhelmia restaurant at Sarona, the former German Temper Colony. Originally settled in 1871, the site has been restored as Israel’s first “lifestyle center,” which includes a recreation area, shops, cafes, and gourmet restaurants. An added unexpected treat to our journey, we were
given tickets to Lady Gaga’s concert. On the heels of a flurry of cancellations by a number of performers, including Neil Young and the Backstreet Boys, she showed up in Tel Aviv and gave a breathtaking performance at HaYarkon Park. Gaga’s incredible show was part of her “artRave: The ARTPOP Ball Tour” and she received wild applause from the mostly young men and women. Gilding the lily just a bit more, was an unexpected appearance by Tony Bennett. Much to the delight of the crowd, they sang “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love,” one of the featured tracks on their duets new album. I couldn’t help thinking that this beautiful audience really needed a night like this following the latest skirmishes between Israel and Hamas. It was a long day and an incredibly exciting evening and was now time to head back to the Carlton Hotel. DAY 5: Exploring Tel Aviv Bright and early the next morning, we explored Tel Aviv, a secular city that feels very much like New York or San Francisco, with the physical beauty of the latter. However, it is illegal for shops to stay open on Shabbat unless you get a special permit. Wending our way through the narrow lanes of Neve Tzedek, Tel Aviv’s oldest
March 25, 2015
neighborhood, (1887) we see areas that have been restored and now are bustling with museums, galleries, and coffee houses. The neighborhood is also home to the Susan Delal Centre for Dance & Theater and the Nahum Gutmann Museum, which houses paintings from one of Israel’s most famous artists. We continued our stroll through the Carmel open-air market and explored sites in the Rothschild Boulevard White City area, which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its international style of architecture from the Bauhaus School. That evening, we were treated to a fabulous dinner at the Messa Restaurant, hosted by the most the charming Ross Belfer, a representative of the Israel Ministry of Tourism’s public relations agency in North America. The restaurant is quite stunning with raised candle-lit tables and sparkling chandeliers, and the sophisticated menu offered many dishes from which to choose. For the first course, I chose veal baklava with a delicate coconut cream, tahini, and cinnamon sauce and opted for the sea bass, which was served with shallot ravioli and porcini foam. The meal was crowned with multiple desserts for us to share and since we’d done so much walking and climbing, they were consumed totally guilt free. Besides tomorrow, our last day, would again be filled with more walking and climbing as we were going to be exploring Jaffa. DAY 6: JAFFA Jaffa, also referred to as Japho, is an ancient port city from which Tel Aviv has sprung. Historically, it played a prominent role in Biblical stories centered around Solomon, Jonah, and Saint Peter. Its flea market is a popular attraction and a wide assortment of items are offered for sale. In the Old City, its winding narrow alleys are dotted with almost hidden artists’ studios, in sharp contrast to the contemporary look of Tel Aviv. According to historical accounts, Jaffa was destroyed in the “Great Revolt” in 67 C.E. when
in a surprise attack, Roman soldiers laid siege to the city, killing all the families who were caught by surprise and were thus unable to fight. One of the highlights of our last day was a visit to the Ilana Goor Museum. With Tel Aviv and the Old Jaffa City as its backdrop, the museum is an 18th Century building located on a picturesque narrow street and houses not only owner and curator Goor’s work, but other well-known Israeli artists as well. She is most famous for being an unconventional artist whose work transcends traditional forms of art. Her style has been referred to as individualistic, autodidactic, intuitive, and multifaceted which is clearly evident in her many fascinating pieces of art on display. This should be an absolute must on your itinerary. Alas, this magical trip, crammed with myriad ancient and modern sites to explore, was coming to an end. We had one final meal at the famous Herbert Samuel Restaurant. Everything on the menu looked sensational, with Jerusalem artichoke and chestnut cream soup drizzled with truffle oil being one of Chef Yonatan Roshfeld’s famous creations. Following our scrumptious dinner, it was time to pile back into the van for the drive to the Ben Gurion Airport, where representatives of Israeli Tourism helped us through a very brief security interview and in short order, we were on our way back to the United States, which shares a long-lasting bond with Israel. In closing, it should be noted that my descriptions are the various sites we visited are in a “capsule” format as it would be impossible to cover the many centuries of history that fill every nook and cranny of this remarkable country. It is my hope that after reading Parts One, Two and Three, you will absolutely be compelled to make a trip to Israel your next vacation destination and as the Israelis say: “Shalom and Bon Voyage.

Fake 911 Calls Have Serious Consequences
By Gitzel Puente COACHELLA VALLEY - Making phony emergency calls, which result in dispatching armed law enforcement units is a crime in California, and it has serious consequences. It’s called “swatting” when someone knowingly makes a false report and causes the

resources to go to something that doesn’t exists, so that puts a strain on the system. What if at the same time, another call comes in that’s real 911 and the officers are just not there to respond to it?” says Sgt. Dan Marshall from Indio Police Department. If the person making the March 25, 2015
phony call is underage, then his or her parents could be held responsible. It’s hard to tell if “swatting” pranks are increasing. There are no national statistics on the number of phony calls, but law enforcement agencies do monitor these “swatting”
hoaxes such as the FBI. Governor Jerry Brown signed Senate Bill 333 in 2013 making the fine higher for making false emergency calls. Source KMIR

Fairfield Inn Still Empty after Fire
By Angela Monroe PALM DESERT -- It was a blazing fire that destroyed a large portion of the Fairfield Inn Marriott in Palm Desert. That was almost a year ago, and since then it has been sitting there in a state of disrepair. We’ve been contacted numerous times by people asking why. Investigators say malfunctioning electrical equipment on the roof started the fire, and no hotel guests were hurt. Nearly one year after a massive blaze ripped through part of the building some people say it’s become the eyesore next door. “It takes me back to childhood memories of a place that got burned down across the street from my house, and it doesn’t leave me with good feelings,” said Thousand Palms resident, Maureen Ely. Maureen also works for a company that takes visitors to events around the valley, and says this burned hotel is an eyesore. “For me, to see this Marriott sit like it does is counterproductive, especially when we’re taking them around places like that, that are fun and they see a burned building,” said Ely. they can have property owner clean the site, fine them or force demolition. “In this case we’ve been trying to work with the property owner because we understand it wasn’t their intention and they don’t plan on closing the hotel down and they want to rebuild and use this opportunity again to rebrand it and update it,” said Tony Bagato, the principal planner for the city of Palm Desert. Just before the fire, the owners put four million in renovations into the hotel.
Now they plan to put in more than 5.5 million, and rebrand it as a SpringHill suites by Marriott. So we asked the city what’s taking so long. “This seems pretty typical to me for a rebranding effort, if it was a typical just fire rebuild I would say it would be longer than normal.” The city’s senior planners told us there are no specific time requirements, but says initial design plans have been approved by Palm Desert. Maureen is ready to see a renovated hotel.
“We won’t have a reminder of a fire any longer, and those of us that live locally will know, but people that are visiting the area won’t know,” said Ely. Now we also spoke with the company that owns the hotel, and they tell us me they are anxious to move forward. They say as soon as designs are approved they will begin working. The owners hope to open the rebranded SpringHill Suites by Marriott in January. Source KMIR
Djokovic, Halep Champions of BNP Paribas Open

His serve also was not working for him while Djokovic connected on 63 percent of his first serves to capitalize and won the last four games of the match and took the final set 6-4. Halep went into the final leading Jankovic 3-1 in their career head to head, and on a winning streak. Jankovic took control early on, taking the first set 6-2. The second was a very different story, with both women having their chances to take it. A late exchange of breaks gave Halep a chance to level it, and she did, forcing a decisive third. The decider went one way, then the other as both players found it hard to hold onto their serve. Judge Rules on Water Issues
By Desert Star Staff A federal judge ruled on Friday March 20, 2015 that the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians has federally reserved rights to groundwater based on the Winters doctrine. This decision is a critical step in how water is managed in the Coachella Valley in the future. “This decision validates the Tribe’s diligent work to protect and preserve one of the Valley’s most important natural resources,” Tribal Chairman Jeff L. Grubbe said. In the decision, Judge Bernal wrote: “The federal government intended to reserve water for the Tribe’s use on its reservation. Rights to the groundwater underlying the
reservation are appurtenant to the reservation itself.” The ruling is consistent with settled federal law and affirms what Agua Caliente has sought from the water districts for over 20 years, which is recognition of its legitimate ownership interest in groundwater in the Coachella Valley and its interest in responsible management of the aquifer’s condition. Water in the Coachella Valley aquifer is currently managed by local water districts. For years, the rate of the water drawn from the aquifer has depleted natural levels, which is known as over-drafting of the aquifer. In addition, the rate of use has meant that the natural
replenishment cycle has not been able to return enough water to match historic water levels. In turn, water districts began importing polluted water from the Colorado River to replenish the water levels in the aquifer. And instead of pre-treating this water, the water districts put the water, as is, into the aquifer, which has significantly lowered the quality of water. “These practices are not acceptable for long-term health and viability of the Coachella Valley water supply,” Chairman Grubbe said. “We called out this detrimental practice and brought it to the attention of the water districts over and over for years simply to be ignored.”

Festival of the Desert Launches Event at Sunnylands
At the launch of The Festival of the Desert at Sunnylands Center and Garden in Rancho Mirage, CA are Phillippe Jordan, Music Director with Nina Kotova and Barrett Wissman, Co-Founder and Director.
Geoffrey Cowan, Diane DeShong, Barrett Wissman, Michael Kaiser and David Hallberg By Pam Price The Festival of the Desert, an ambitious one-day program of classical music, cuisine, and a session on The Future of Arts in America’s launch on March 18th at Sunnylands Center & Gardens with Philippe Jordan, Festival Music Director welcoming guests. Barrett Wissman followed him. Chairman of IMG Artists is the event’s co-founder and director. Mr. Wissman thanked the principal benefactors, Gregory and Regina Weingarten and the Annenberg Foundation, Harold Matzner and Marc and Eva Stern. Following the opening
remarks a morning concert entitled “The Genius of the Emigre Composer” was performed. This was an exploration of the works of the great emigre composers of the 20th century and their influence on the American music tradition. The performance featured Angel Romero, guitar, Christopher, piano, Mikhail Korzhev, piano, Ilana Davidson, soprano and the Rosseti Spring Quartet. Lunch in the gardens of the estate followed featuring a menu designed by Spencer’s Restaurant ( in Palm Springs) with specialties such as local Indio melon soup with fresh mint and edible garnish of flowers. The program concluded with a
‘talk & discussion’ focused on the Future of the Arts in America presented by Michael M. Kaiser the former President of the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The Festival Advisory Board included Steven Biller, Geoffrey Cowan, Renee Fleming, Anne Taubman and Steve Pougnet, Palm Spring’s mayor. This innovative program was precisely curated linking the past to the present as the hours moved on. After Renee Fleming and Philippe Jordan’s concert at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert, a Gala Reception was held at Sunnylands Center & Gardens with musical performances
curated by Quincey Jones and a dance program curated by David Hallberg featuring dancers Veronika Part and Maria Kowroski. The dinner “curated by Cat Cora” was also a work of art featuring some of her specialties, such as orange and chili rubbed beef tenderloin with Basque Style “fresh herbs” green sauce. Barrett Wissman was enthusiastic about the launch of the Festival of the Desert on many levels and what makes it unique. “I think the idea of cross collaborations between art forms and having a great singer (Renee Fleming) with a great actor or a fantastic chef with a wonderful
visual artist. His opinion of Palm Springs as the epicenter of the event went further. “Palm Springs has a wonderful air and spirit. One feels that immediately, it is neither excessively large nor too small, and there is audience already there. At the same time, it has an intimacy of a place away from the traffic and noise of everyday life. It is in this ambiance one can enjoy the arts.” Pamela Price serves as the Vice Commissioner for the Cathedral City Public Art Commission

A college tournament was held during the last few days on the practice courts and other stadiums. The main stadium was saved for the singles and doubles final matches. It’s hard to beat watching this caliber of tennis play. It’s no wonder that record attendance was broken again this year with 456,672 people attending. Day match records were broken too with over 16,000 at the finals on Sunday. A lot of the matches were sold out in advance and there were only a few seats in the top tier that were empty. Cheers rang out for the players and flags were waved from their seats. Some would chant ROGER ROGER and they were louder than cheers for Djokovic. This tournament grows faster each year as more and more improvements are made to delight the fans with talks brewing of a third stadium in the near future.

FILM
BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN
‘Cinderella’ Enchants at the Ahmanson and On Screen “Cinderella” is back in town—on stage and screen— and in each case, the beloved fairytale seems fresh and new because the writers went back to the original French version by Charles Perrault, who penned “Cinderella” in the 18th century. In the original story, but not in the English and American translations, Cinderella and the prince meet and admire one another long before the palace ball and the fairy godmother is an old beggar woman Cinderella has been kind to, never knowing she is actually a magical presence. In the Tony Award winning musical “Cinderella,“ now at the Ahmanson Theatre, playwright Douglas Carter Beane has updated the original book by Oscar Hammerstein II, adding plot twists and plenty of contemporary comedy without losing the fairytale’s charm and magic. And speaking of magic, the costume design by William Ivey Long is totally amazing; particularly in Cinderella’s wardrobe transformation in Act I when the fairy godmothers Marie (Kecia Lewis) tells Cinderella (Page Faure) to believe. In the blink of an eye, her ragged dress becomes a dazzling white floor length ball gown. How did they do that? And it happens again in Act II when her tattered togs to suddenly turn into a gorgeous form fitting golden frock. The scenic design by Anna Louizos also bedazzles, from the tall trees in the forest surrounding the quaint cottage where Cinderella lives in the palace and ballroom settings. Adding to the fun is the transformation of a pumpkin into a glimmering
coach and a raccoon and fox into a footman and driver. In the original Rodgers and Hammerstein musical the prince was urged to marry by his parents, the king and queen. In this revised version Prince Topher (Andy Huntington Jones), like Cinderella, is an orphan. According to Beane, “ I made them both feel that they were alone in the world “ making them kindred souls in more ways than one. Another twist, dating back to the original Perrault plot, is one stepsister; Gabrielle (Kaitlyn Davidson) actually likes Cinderella who upsets Cinderella’s stepmother played by Fran Drescher. Adding to the comedy is the very round stepsister Charlotte (Aymee Garcia) who belts out the musical lament “Why Would a Fellow Want a Girl Like That?” bemoaning the fact that the prince has chosen the slender mystery maiden at the ball. On opening night there were plenty of little girls dressed in princess gowns, but you don’t have to be a child to fall under the spell of this totally captivating production filled with music and lyrics by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. And the two leads not only can sing, they dance divinely. “Cinderella” is a wonderful way to spend an evening. Cinderella,” at the Ahmanson Theatre at the Music Center, 135 N. Grand Ave, Downtown L.A. runs through April 26th. For tickets and information go to www.CenterTheatreGroup.org or call (213) 972-4400.

Richard Madden as Prince Charming and Lily James as Cinderella The newest Disney film version of “Cinderella” stars Lily James (Cousin Rose on TVs “Downton Abbey”) and she is a breath of spring. It’s easy to see why the prince (Richard Madden) is charmed by her when they meet by chance in the forest. She finds him attractive as well, but rides off without telling him her name. She has won his heart by her sweetness and kind manner, but before he can find her again his father (Derek Jacobi) decides to host a royal ball so his son can meet a suitable princess and marry. As the film begins we meet Ella and her loving parents. Sadly, when she is quite young, her mother dies. After many years, her father (Ben Chaplin) marries a widow (Cate Blanchett) who has two daughters of her own, Drisella (Sophie McShane, Daisy on “Downton Abbey“) and Anastasia (Holliday Grainger). They are cute, but also vain, greedy and very unpleasant to their stepsister following the death of her beloved father.
As a child Cinderella was taught to be kind and courageous, and she lives up to these high standards despite the constant cruel treatment inflicted on her by her cold and calculating stepmother. Her real mother also told her she would be protected by a fairy godmother who turns out to be a beggar woman Cinderella has been kind to, played with gusto by Helena Bonham Carter. And like the Perrault classic, there is intrigue in the court as the Grand Duke (Stellan Skarsgard) attempts to become the power behind the throne following the death of the king. The story is beautifully directed by Kenneth Branaugh who takes us through the lush countryside and into the hearts and emotions of two special sweethearts. The movie is perfect for this upcoming holiday season, and like the Disney animated feature of long ago, there are those adorable mice who live with Cinderella in her attic bedroom.

I saw “Cinderella” at the beautiful El Capitan Theater on Hollywood Blvd. Prior to the film, there was a stage show featuring the singing, dancing snowman from “Frozen” and a colorful series of lights and forms projected around the theater. If you see “Cinderella” at the El Capitan, bring along a camera or smartphone so you can photograph the costumes which are displayed in the lobby and downstairs at the theater. You can also register to win a Blue Ball gown worth hundreds of dollars that are similar to the one Cinderella wears in the film. Chances of winning this beautiful dress are a lot better than winning the lottery, and it’s free to enter. Before the show, there is an organ concert featuring Disney’s music. After the show visit the soda fountain and gift shop next to the theatre. Enjoy a sundae or banana split and receive a sample of their delicious Ghirardelli chocolates. Yum!

Factory) You might like if you enjoy: Paul McCartney, Coldplay, Dave Grohl, James Taylor Te l l m e m o re : P a u l McCartney’s legacy as singersongwriter/multi-instrumentalist and live performer looms so large that a special event featuring the powerful likes of Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Coldplay, James Taylor and Diana Krall, Duane Eddy, Alicia Keys, Alison Krauss & Union Station and others performing some of his masterworks only scratches the surface of the 18time Grammy winner’s expansive songbook. But on Feb. 10, 2012, Sir Paul was honored as the
2012 MusiCares Person of the Year with a memorable benefit concert that is now available on DVD or Blu-ray. Highlights include Neil Young & Crazy Horse’s fiery reworking of “I Saw Her Standing There,” Coldplay’s gentle version of “We Can Work It Out” and Alicia Keys’ piano-anchored “Blackbird”; the icing on the cake is that McCartney and his top-tier band join in the fun to perform a blistering “Magical Mystery Tour” and “Junior’s Farm” early in the event, and team up with “Dave Grohl and Joe Walsh for an epic “Golden Slumbers / Carry That Weight / The End” to top things off. Tell me more: Joe Bonamassa is one of the world’s greatest living blues guitarists, and like many of the genre’s modern-day proponents he is always looking for an opportunity to honor the greats who paved the way for him. The newly-released “Muddy Wolf at Red Rocks” (available DVD and audio CD) honors both Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf via a special concert filmed at Red Rocks Amphitheater over Labor Day weekend in 2014. The event is divided into three sections; the first section features a tribute to Waters, the second features reworkings of Wolf’s most beloved material, and a six-song third act puts the focus on Bonamassa’s original work. The uptempo “Tiger In Your Tank,” “I Can’t Be Satisfied” (with its slow intro and accelerating course complete with burning guitar and harmonica) and “All Night Boogie” (with Bonamassa and Kirk Fletcher trading lead guitar work) are among the many standout performances on the highly-recommended release. Information: jbonamassa.com. Title: Mystery Science Theater 3000: XXXII
(Shout! Factory) You might like if you enjoy: Mystery Science Theater 3000, Svengoolie, RiffTrax Tell me more: Although the long-running “Mystery Science Theater 3000” was widely recognized for its groundbreaking skewing of bad movies, music (courtesy of both original songs as well as the use of a wide-range of references and even sung bits) was always was an important part of the Satellite of Love’s trajectory. Shout Factory’s ongoing series of four-episode sets of the series includes season five’s “Hercules,” the Steve Reeves-starring 1958 film scored by the great Italian composer Enzo Masetti. That memorable episode also features astronaut Joel Robinson and his robot pals referencing everybody from Tom Jones and Pete Townshend to the Thompson Twins, Michael Bolton and John Lennon. They even use one of their skits to celebrate the soft rock legacy of early ‘70s hit makers Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds. Information: ShoutFactory.com.

Palm Canyon Theatre Presents a Lush “Secret Garden” Musical
By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic The Layne Family of Palm Springs and founders of the Palm Canyon Theatre (PCT) hit two home runs in one week. On March 13th the family was honored by Bob Marshall, President of the Palm Springs Walk of Stars who presented its 382nd Star to theatre founder and family patriarch Dr. William Layne, in a ceremony attended by 100 patrons, supporters, and invited guests. The permanent plaque honoring the Layne family’s contributions to the Valley Arts Scene over the last eighteen years, was placed squarely at the entrance to the theatre, located at 538 North Palm Canyon Drive. The second home run came one week later on March 20th with the opening of the musical “The Secret Garden”, lovingly directed by Dr. William Layne that features members of his family: his eight year-old granddaughter Ava and his ten year-old grandson Wyatt Tethal, his daughter and theatre Managing Director/coartistic director and Actor Se Layne, and son J.W. Layne, the theatre’s resident Scenic Design
wizard and co-artistic director. “The Secret Garden” with music by Lucy Simon and lyrics and book by Marsha Norman is a timeless tale of a special place where magic hope and love reside. Boasting a cast of twenty-two performers led by Lyric-Baritone Chris Sands and Baritone Mark Almy, the production features a talented company of actor-singer-dancer performers. Based on the 1911 novel of the same name by Frances Hodgson Burnett, the Palm Canyon Theatre production is the story 10 year-old Mary Lennox, a young English girl (Ava Tethel) born and raised in In India and the daughter of English Captain Lennox and his wife Rose (Angela Delaire). When a cholera outbreak strikes, Mary is left an orphan and is sent back to Yorkshire, England to live with Archibald Craven (Chris Sands) and Neville Craven (Mark Almy), two uncles she has never met. Eventually her own personality blossoms as she and Dickon, the young gardener (wonderful played by Nicholas Sloan) bring not only new life to a neglected
garden on the estate but also brightens up the dreary manor house owned by her two uncles. Mary also brings a healing breath of fresh air to her sickly cousin Colin Craven (played by Wyatt Tethal, her real-life brother) and she generally lights up the dark and musty corners of the manor house much to the servant’s delight; especially Martha, the chambermaid and friend to Mary (nicely played and sung by Alisha Bates; last seen at PCT in “A Chorus Line” as Diana Morales). With a cast this large it’s not possible to list everyone, however, there are always standouts in every successful production. And this show is no exception. The musical numbers from Norman and Simon are lush and rich, and in the hands of Sands, Almy, and Tethal they still resonate today. Especially the touching and haunting numbers by Sands and Sylvia Tethel who plays the beautiful Lily in “A Girl in the Valley” and “I Heard Someone Crying”. Also, the penultimate moving duet “Lily’s Eyes” in the first act between Sands and Almy: is a poignant number that
displays the range and power of these two splendid singers. Nicholas Sloan’s comedy garden number, “Winter’s on the Wing”, is a folksy number that’s delivered with wit and energy. In the second act, Sands’ “Race You to the Top of the Morning” along with “Where in the World”, and the musicalending duet “How Could I Ever Know” with Tethal as Lily, are all show stoppers. Which brings me to the astonishing, just-turnedeight-year-old, adorable budding actress Ava Tethal. The part of Mary is usually played by an actor who is 11 or 12. The character is on stage almost 75% of the time. Her performance is nothing short of amazing. I see TV agents and managers and a career in show business if mommy and daddy allow. And the same goes for 10 year-old brother Wyatt, as well. In the technical department, the scenic and lighting design by J.W. Layne renders a veritable onstage garden with woods, secret doors, and flowers, and plenty of room for the singers and dancers as well as actors in the interior scenes. The costumes designed by Se Layne are beautiful, bright,
and eye-appealing. It’s visually apparent that former costume designer Derik Shopinski is back in the desert. Musical Direction in community or Regional theatre is a skill set in itself. Don Kelley has assembled a lovely score that compliments the performers and this impressive production. In the sound department, however, a little work needs to be done. Sound designs in the Palm Canyon Theatre have always been tricky when it comes to balancing the audio level for the audience to be able to hear the dialogue or lyrics, and the need of the singers to hear the music in order to remain on-key. It’s a thorny problem to be sure. The night I attended, the floor in row three literally vibrated when the singing and the music, and the microphones all came on at the same time. Surely there must be a way to solve this problematic auditorium sound balancing act. “The Secret Garden” is a family-pleasing, audience entertaining evening in the theatre. For reservations and ticket information call the box office at 760-323-5123.

Can We Wait on the NFL in Los Angeles? LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles has not housed an NFL franchise since the mid 90’s. Over the last half decade, however, the idea of bringing the NFL back to Southern California has picked up more momentum than Jerome Bettis on first and goal. Not just bring one NFL team, though, bring TWO teams. On Tuesday, the owner of the current NFL champion New England Patriots, Robert Kraft said he believes Los Angeles would have two NFL franchises by 2016. Kraft is someone with a lot of pull. When the owner of a dynasty like the Patriots says something, it usually carries a lot of weight. Kraft is not the first person to think two teams are a viable option. Earlier in February, reports cam out of the Rams and the Chargers working out a deal to both move to Los Angeles. It appears as if moving two teams to Los Angeles is actually a thing of consideration among the NFL’s elite. There is a notion among the Los Angeles media that fans have would more than
love to have a team to call their own, but is that really the case? There are complications that no one is really considering. The Rams and the Raiders left for a reason, right? Los Angeles will always be a Lakers and Dodgers town. Will the busy people of LA want to take time on their Sunday to drive on the same congested freeways that they take to work five days a week? Lets not forget why the NFL left in the first place People in Los Angeles would like to have pro football back but Angelino’s have been doing fine without it. With the emergence of fantasy football and things like the NFL Package on DirecTV, fans would rather watch from their couch or tablet. With a come-late-leave-early reputation, what will happen if the future NFL team or teams are unsuccessful? No one in Los Angeles is going to want to drive and pay high prices for tickets to watch a losing product. Additionally, is there really enough people to support two teams in Los Angeles? Why cant the NFL
just try one and see how it goes first? Having virtually no stadium for multiple teams to play in is problem, too. There have been plans and ideas in the previous weeks but there is no actual stadium, yet. Downtown has the Coliseum and Pasadena has the Rose Bowl but those are not permanent or even good options for an NFL franchise. Do not forget that tailgating – a huge part of football – will likely be impossibility in Los Angeles. Lastly, and most importantly, if Los Angeles receives its football team and it fails again. That’s it; a team will likely not come back for a third go-round in a huge but distracted market. Despite the aforementioned concerns, the NFL and Los Angeles together makes too much sense not to happen. Let’s just hope that all issues will be resolved before hastily hauling a team Southwest. Finance Tips Every College Student Should Know
By Desert Star Staff When the acceptance letter arrives from a college or university, it’s cause for celebration. But it’s also time to do some serious number crunching and take steps to mitigate potential educationrelated debt. The Institute for College Access and Success (TICAS) estimates that the average
14

student leaves higher education with a diploma in hand, and a debt load of more than $26,0001. Even families who have saved for postsecondary education for years find themselves looking at ways to manage expenses as the cost of tuition, books and room and board add up. Exploring both traditional and non-traditional sources of financial aid can help
make those mounting expenses more manageable. Schedule a meeting with financial aid. As soon as you have settled on which school you’ll attend, contact the financial aid office and request an appointment with an advisor. If you’re within a drivable distance, it’s a good idea to meet in person and develop a relationship with someone who March 25, 2015
can help you identify potential aid sources you might not have considered otherwise. Closer to home, do the same with your high school counselor, who can keep an eye open for scholarships that match your credentials. Explore association scholarships. Many professional associations and member-based organizations offer competitive scholarship programs. Check with the major employers in your area, particularly any in your chosen field, to find out if they offer any scholarship or grants. You can also check with family members to determine what organizations they belong to and whether you are eligible for any funds. For example, Foresters(tm), an international financial services provider committed to family well-being, offers the Foresters Competitive Scholarship2, which awards up to 250 tuition scholarships worth up to $8,000 each for eligible members, their children and their grandchildren in the United States and Canada. Learn more about the scholarship opportunities awarded by Foresters at www. foresters.com. File for federal aid. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), even if you don’t think your financial circumstances make you eligible for a grant. You may be surprised by what is available. In addition, research national grants such as Pell Grants that can help defray
your expenses. Secure a career-relevant job or internship. While classes, studying and enjoying a healthy social life are all important aspects of the college experience, gaining experience in your future career field is valuable too. Consult with your school’s career center or an advisor in your area of study to uncover paid internship opportunities that will help you develop your resume and bolster your bank account. Making the most of potential resources to pay for your degree lets you keep your focus squarely on your studies so your next big cause for celebration can be your college diploma. This amount is $6,840.42 as of September 24, 2014, and will increase until your account becomes current. Following the expiration of the time period referred to in the first paragraph of this notice, unless the obligation being foreclosed upon or a separate written agreement between you and your creditor permits a longer period, you have only the legal right to stop the sale of your property by paying the entire amount demanded by your creditor. Utah Brings Back the Firing Squad, so how Does it Work?
AP Photo/Trent Nelson, Pool, File). FILE - This June 18, 2010, file photo shows the firing squad execution chamber at the Utah State Prison in Draper, Utah. By Brady McCombs Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah Gov. Gary Herbert has given his stamp of approval to a law that brings back the firing squad in the only state that has used it in the past 40 years. Under the measure approved Monday, firing squads will serve as a backup method if lethal injection drugs aren’t available. Here’s a closer look at how it works: WHAT HAPPENS ON EXECUTION DAY?: The prisoner is seated in a chair that is set up in front of a wood panel and in between stacked sandbags that keep the bullets from ricocheting around the room. A target is pinned over the inmate’s heart. Shooters aim for the chest rather than the head because it’s a bigger target and usually allows for a faster death, said Utah Rep. Paul Ray, who sponsored the proposal. The prisoner is offered a
two-minute window to offer final words. In 1977, Gary Gilmore used that chance to say, “Let’s do this,” before he died. Five shooters set up about 25 feet from the chair, with their .30-caliber Winchester rifles pointing through slots in a wall. Assuming they hit their target, the heart ruptures and the prisoner dies quickly from blood loss. In 2010, Ronnie Lee Gardner was declared dead two minutes after he was shot. He was the last person killed by firing squad in the U.S. WHO ARE THE SHOOTERS?: The gunmen are chosen from a pool of volunteer officers, with priority given to those from the area where the crime happened. There are always more volunteers than spots on the squad, Ray has said. The shooters’ identities are kept anonymous, and one of their rifles is loaded with a blank round
so nobody knows which officer killed the inmate. HAVE FIRING SQUAD EXECUTIONS EVER GONE WRONG?: Not in recent history, said Deborah Denno, a Fordham Law School professor who has long studied executions. Utah’s three firing squad executions in the past four decades went as planned, she said. But the Washington, D.C.based Death Penalty Information Center, which opposes capital punishment, warns that a firing squad is not a foolproof execution method because the inmate could move or the shooters could miss the heart, causing a slower, more painful death. One such case appears to have happened in 1879, during Utah’s territorial days, when a firing squad missed Wallace Wilkerson’s heart and it took him 27 minutes to die, according to newspaper accounts. Denno said errant shots to
Wilkerson’s shoulder might have been intentional to make him suffer. CAN ORGANS BE DONATED AFTER FIRING SQUAD EXECUTIONS?: Yes. Unlike a lethal injection that poisons the organs, the bodies of people executed by firing squad remain usable. Gilmore, executed by firing squad in 1977, agreed to donate his eyes, kidneys, liver and pituitary gland for medical use. His kidneys proved unusable because of bullet wounds. Gardner did not donate his organs. ARE ANY UTAH INMATES IN LINE FOR THE FIRING SQUAD?: Yes. Ron Lafferty, who claimed God directed him to kill his sister-in-law and her baby daughter in 1984 because of the victim’s resistance to his beliefs in polygamy, has requested the firing squad. Lawmakers in the state stopped offering inmates that choice in 2004, saying firing squads attracted intense media interest and took attention from victims. But Lafferty got the option
because he was convicted before 2004. The other Utah death row inmate who could be next up for execution, Doug Carter, has chosen lethal injection. Under the new law, Carter would die by firing squad if the state can’t get lethal injection drugs 30 days before his execution date. DO ANY OTHER STATES USE FIRING SQUADS?: The firing squad is on the books in Oklahoma, but the chances it will be used there anytime soon are much more remote than in Utah. Under Oklahoma law, the firing squad already is the third option for executions, to be used only if the courts rule that the first two choices - lethal injection and electrocution - are unconstitutional. The firing squad would become even less likely in Oklahoma if lawmakers approve a bill authorizing nitrogen gas as an execution method. Under that proposal, nitrogen would become the second option if lethal injection drugs are unavailable, bumping the firing squad to No. 4. Source KMIR
