O/P by Janice Gough No matter what stage of life you may be in. Life Insurance can save you or your loved ones from monetary disaster. Many years ago, Life insurance was primarily purchased to take care of final expense. Today’s plans are geared to provide solutions for retirement, critical illness, long-term care needs, emergency health needs, estate protection and tax sheltered investments and savings. It is the tax-sheltered component of the cash accumulation which makes it a perfect plan for accumulation and distribution of money. Some Insurance companies have recognized how their products can provide even better solutions for retirement income planning and have designed products to provide
affordable life insurance costs for those who are 60-80 years old. They wish to attract those with retirement assets. By investing additional money above and beyond the amount needed to fund the Life insurance, one may choose from a variable life, similar to variable annuities or indexed life, again similar to indexed annuities. The benefits of using a Life plan will offer better liquidity and distribution of savings, and the Death proceeds will still be received by the descendants’ tax free. Unlike an annuity, you can take out the basis first, which comes out tax free. When you get into the gains, you are able to switch over and start taking policy loans against the death benefit, income-tax-free. The additional costs of using life insurance offset substantially, March 26, 2014
compared to the taxation you would have paid if the money was not received as a loan from a tax-exempt benefit. As long as the policy stays in force until the insured passes away, the death benefit is paid out and the loans repaid against that, descendants will be able to enjoy tax-free retirement distribution. When considering passing a legacy to heirs, life insurance is not only passed to them taxfree (versus annuities or other investments), the purchase of larger amounts in life insurance nets quite a bit more to heirs. The additional benefit of using life insurance versus tax qualified plans, such as I.R.A. or other tax-deferred accounts, is that you would avoid tax encumbrances of penalties for early withdrawal prior to age
59 ½ or penalties in the annuity contract for early withdrawal. The value of an annuity may be included in estate’s value. Understanding the intricacies of these inclusions is s critically important aspect of estate planning. Life insurance, structured properly, is used to pay estate taxes, which are due nine months from the date of death. Proceeds from the life plan, save the diminishing effects on estates caused by penalties and the need to liquidate other assets to pay the tax. By Art Kunkin Mr. Life Extension The mastermind group is one of the most powerful tools ever developed and used by successful people. The idea of mastermind groups was first publicized by a writer named Napoleon Hill in the early 1900’s. In a study Hill made of 500 multi-millionaires, he observed that these individual entrepreneurs when creating their businesses would always assemble a group of people who had talents that the entrepreneur himself needed to form the new business but lacked. Hill also noted that the 500 successful capitalists he interviewed would almost invariably do something quite remarkable by mentally calling upon the spirits of personal heroes who had personal and business qualities that these entrepreneurs felt they needed. In other words, these 500 business leaders would visualize and imagine their “heroes” like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln sitting in small mastermind groups with them, contributing important insights for their new corporations even if they were deceased. These successful people would ask questions of these invisible advisers and believed they got valuable advice in return. Hill wrote about his observations of these mastermind groups in a remarkable book titled “Think And Grow Rich.” This book has sold 40 million copies making it one of the best sellers of all time. It still sells one million copies each year. It is worth reading. In other words, a mastermind group is just a fancy term for a group of people with a common goal that meets in various ways (in person, on the phone, via www.desertstarweekly.com
Skype, chat rooms, computer meeting software, etc.) to improve what they do. Here is a suggested format to organize mastermind meetings. Organizing messages are sent out to a dozen people. Then choose people who are already where you would like to be in your life. or who are desirably at a level above you. Many people at a higher level will want to become involved with you simply because they get to play at a game they might never organize for themselves.. No more than five or six people are selected to be part of the mastermind group. The group is kept small so everyone can be heard during a meeting. At the beginning of the meeting, each person, one after another, talks briefly about their personal and community goals and what they have accomplished since the previous meeting. During the mastermind meeting, a predetermined person in the “hot seat” shares, in detail, any number of issues, complications, questions and concerns about his or her own situation. The rest of the members then offer suggestions or comments. The meeting closes with each person, one-by-one, talking for a minute or two about the
goals they want to accomplish by the next meeting. Also, the “hot seat” person for the next mastermind is selected then so he or she can be ready with questions for the group. There are several sites on the internet that have printed forms that mastermind groups can duplicate to organize and conduct their meetings or Internet connections. (www. thesuccessprinciples.com). Mastermind groups can be organized in different ways. Every member can partner with another member. Each member could be asked to phone each other every week to make sure they are both following through on their goals. Private forums could be created where members can log in between meetings and brainstorm their ideas.. A mastermind blog can be setup where each member is responsible for posting every day what they have done to move forward on their goals. I believe that mastermind groups should be established to face and solve the problem of physical death, the greatest of all personal issues..To this end I have now begun sending out a daily email to remind potential masterminders about what to do each day to be happy, thoroughly alive and a participant in changing
the world for the better. I can be emailed at artkunkin@lifeextensionfreepress to learn about my proposal in greater detail and sign up for my mentoring emails. This week I have started to publish a new Free Press, a Life Extension Free Press website, to coordinate this new mastermind program for happiness, prosperity and long life. Please email me about this. And do look today at the contents of the new Free Press membership website, www. ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’--The Cat’s Meow
By Theda Kleinhans Reichman The Cohen brothers, Joel and Ethan, wrote and directed “Inside Llewyn Davis,” a film that chronicles a week in the life of a young folk singer in New York’s Greenwich Village circa 1961. Llewyn, played by actor/ musician Oscar Issac, is having a hard time getting by financially and artistically, relying on the support of friends, family and even strangers to stay afloat. He faces countless obstacles along the way, many of which he creates for himself. The Cohen brothers have assembled a fine cast that includes Carey Mulligan, John Goodman, F. Murray Abraham and Justin Timberlake as well as a golden cat or two (portrayed by more than one tabby). The result is purrfect. In fact, the cat is warmer and lovable than our protagonist who often antagonizes those who are closest to him. And if an Oscar category included cat capers this kitty would be in contention. As the film opens Llewyn is singing in a club, his voice and style are intimate and warm, drawing the listener into his world and music. Nevertheless, as we start to know him better, we like him less, wondering why friends stand by him so steadfastly. One pair of admirers, a professor and his wife, have allowed Llewyn to crash overnight. The next morning Llewyn is the last human to leave the apartment. In the process, he leaves the front door open and the cat races out with Llewyn hot pursuit. The film is filled with music performed by Isaacs, Timberlake and Carey Mulligan and others and is the Cohen brother’s fourth collaborations with multiple Grammy and Academy Award winning music producer T Bone Burnett. The DVD comes with a Special Feature on the making of the film and is extremely
6
interesting. The Cohen Brothers and cast members talk about the music, and both Joel and Ethan laugh about the difficulty involved in getting a cat to do what they wanted it to do. However, in the end, the cat characters give very purrr-sonable performances. The film, from Sony Pictures, is rated R for language and some sexual references. Paramount Pictures “Noah,” starring Russell Crowe in the title role, has stirred a bit of controversy for adding more story material than is found in the biblical text. The main story, however, remains the same with Noah gathering animals onto the ark prior to a great and devastating flood. If you want a more biblical version, check out Lionsgate’s “Noah and the Great Ark” which arrived on DVD March 4 ($14.98). The DVD, a collection of three documentaries, examine the legend and the science of one of the histories’ most famous floods.
Lily Tomlin Live Story and Photos by Pat Krause Lily Tomlin entertained a full house at the McCallum Theater in Palm Desert. I don’t think there was an empty seat in the whole theatre. Lily has so many fans that she has created over the course of her career. She started her show with a video that displayed the many characters she has played over the years. My favorite was Ernestine but there were so many to choose from. The video showed some of her characters that many had not seen before. She came on stage after

the short video and told a few jokes about some local people. She mentioned Mayor Steve Pougnet and Colorado but then said she didn’t mean it because when she moved to Palm Springs, she wanted to be a councilman. Lily never seems to be able to keep from making people laugh. Lily went into her routine of well known people that she portrayed Ernestine, the telephone operator, who made the quote “One Ringy Dingy” so famous that people still laugh when they hear it. The little-girl Edith Ann in the big chair was
another of her hit characters. She did a large segment on one of her favorite characters, Mrs. Beasley. Lily has been in movies, Nine to Five, was one of my favorites. The TV Show, Laugh In, really launched her career into the big time. She has appeared on Broadway and in many other TV shows. She married her long-time partner Jane Wagner of over 40 years recently. Lily and Jane have collaborated on many of her shows, records, and Broadway appearances. www.desertstarweekly.com
New Dining and Community Outreach at ‘The Ranch’ By Desert Star Staff Desert Hot Springs, CA.– The Ranch Recovery Centers, Inc. opened its new Dining and Community Outreach Center today. The 4,000 square-foot building includes a kitchen and dining facility and will also be used for lectures and life skills training for clients of the drug and alcohol recovery center. Classes and support groups offered at The Ranch, including Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Relapse Awareness, Planned Parenthood, STD Awareness, Smoking Cessation and others, are expected to grow with the larger building. The Ranch broke ground on the Community Outreach Center last fall after a multiyear fundraising campaign that included generous donations from the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation, the City of Palm Desert, Desert Healthcare District, Ernie Rubin, the Beneto Foundation, and Leona Aronoff-Sadacca in honor of Mitch Epstein. Other major donors include Michael and Diane Beemer, Ira and Martha Marshall, and the James A. and Mary H. Bell Charitable
Foundation. “Fundraising for this project took a lot of people believing in our mission,” said Rick Mesa, President and CEO of The Ranch Recovery Centers, Inc. “This project is a true collaboration, and we
are grateful to everyone who contributed.” The Ranch welcomed about 85 invited guests to the dedication event, including Supervisor John Benoit, County Legislative Assistant Mike Gialdini, City of Desert
Hot Springs Mayor Adam Sanchez, and City of Palm Desert Mayor Van Tanner. From the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation, Ronald and Sherrie Auen, Christopher McGuire, Douglass and Gwen Vance, Darrell Burrage, and Catharine Reed attended. Kathy Greco, Steve Brown, and Donna Craig represented Desert Healthcare District. Among other distinguished donors and supporters were Leona Arnoff-

You will soon be called to action. For now reflect upon your resources, what’s of value now and of value later. Be practical by preparing for the future. Family is most important and must be intact, loving and harmonious for you to feel safe and secure. Look back and assess priorities. Now look forward and list what is needed for a protected future. Create a group of like-minded people. Develop transparency, which creates group love and trust.
TAURUS More and more messages will illuminate your mind now and in coming months. Perhaps while asleep, in prayer, under water (swimming, surfing, the shower), in the garden. Quiet reflection, study, solitary walks in nature, tending to the plant and animal kingdoms – all are a focus that aids in receiving and understanding guidance. The planets are influencing your group work and inner spiritual life. From these a new life structure takes shape.
GEMINI As you consider what is valuable and what is not, you may simply throw everything away in search of new realities, new partnerships. However, there are some things

and people to maintain from long ago. You are connected astrologically (energetically). Even though you may feel neglectful of them, they are your future, understand your wound, and your developing awareness. These words will make sense soon.
CANCER Two realities appear before you. Resources that have become tired and worn out and resources needed to contain the new reality, which you and others are beginning to build. We are beginning a new rhythm. This new cycle allows for rebirth, rebuilding and realignments. It’s time to be seen in the world, to lead a working group and to bring forth your knowledge. You hold one of the keys to the future. Through Cancer’s gate, Spirit enters matter.
VIRGO Organizing money, finances, resources soothe any anxiety. Although you may feel everything’s in order, look again. Consider new systems. Don’t implement yet, not till Mars retro is over (late May). Discuss your ideas with a partner or intimate friend. Their listening allows a new sense of self-worth to develop. Kids’ Health – Stop Diseases Before They Start
By Desert Star Staff As a parent, you make decisions every day to keep your child safe and healthy, which include keeping your child up-todate on vaccines to help protect against serious diseases. You may wonder if the diseases that vaccines prevent are even a threat to your child, how they
8
DesertSTAR
offer protection and why your child needs to get their shots at certain ages. Learning about vaccines will help you better understand why the disease protection they provide is so important for you and your family. Germs, Germs Everywhere There are many ways your child could be exposed
to germs, like bacteria and viruses, that cause diseases. For example, germs could come from people coughing or sneezing around them or when they put toys in their mouths. When these germs get into your child’s body — through their eyes, nose, mouth, or open cuts — they attack and multiply. This invasion is called an infection, which is what makes your child sick. Your child’s immune system then has to work to fight it off. If your child has received a vaccine to protect him against a disease, it will help his immune system safely fight off the disease, and develop immunity. Vaccines act like, or imitate, an infection. This “imitation” infection does not cause illness, but instead, it causes the immune system to react in a way similar to how it does to a real infection. As a result, your child’s immune system will create cells to recognize and fight the vaccinepreventable disease in the future. This protection is called immunity. Immunity Stops Outbreaks Immunity is important to protect your child against vaccine-preventable diseases, like whooping cough — also known as pertussis — and chickenpox, both of which still occur in the United States. March 26, 2014
If people stopped vaccinating, even the few cases of the vaccine-preventable diseases that don’t occur as commonly in the United States, like measles, could very quickly become tens or hundreds of thousands of cases. Some of these diseases are still common in other parts of the world. You may think this isn’t a problem if you don’t travel to these countries, but your child could come into contact with international travelers anywhere in your community. Kids that are not fully vaccinated and are exposed to a disease can become seriously sick and spread it through a community. To stop the spread of a disease, the majority of a community has to be immunized against that disease. When the majority of the community has the safe, proven protection of the vaccine, the outbreak doesn’t get the opportunity to keep spreading. Timing Is Everything When you vaccinate your child according to CDC’s recommended schedule, you are providing him with the best protection early in life, before he is exposed to life-threatening diseases. This recommended schedule is designed to protect infants and children by
providing immunity when they are susceptible to diseases. The consequences of these diseases can be very serious, and even life-threatening, for infants and young children. The CDC sets the U.S. childhood immunization schedule based on recommendations from a group of medical and public health experts called the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). This group carefully studies all safety and effectiveness data to make recommendations about vaccines. The ACIP also looks at how severe the disease is, and the number of children who get it when there is no vaccine. Vaccines Give You the Power to Protect Immunizations have helped to greatly improve the health of children in the United States. By continuing to vaccinate your baby according to the recommended immunization schedule, you are giving him the best protection against 14 serious childhood illnesses before he is two years old. To learn more about immunizations, visit the CDC online at www.cdc. gov/vaccines/parents or call 800-CDC-INFO. (Family Features) www.desertstarweekly.com
Temple Isaiah Brings ‘Bimah To Broadway’ To Desert
Chris Harden By Pamela Price Special to The Desert Star Weekly Bridging the heritage of Jewish music to the heartbeat of Broadway is an original performance featuring Hazzan David Propis, set for March 30th Sunday at Temple Isaiah in Palm Springs. If the name David Propis sounds familiar, it is because he is the founder, creative director and managing partner of the Three Jewish Tenors, which was
a sold-out performance at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert in 2013. Building on that succcess he performed at Temple Isaiah in January of this year, joined by Hazzans from around the U.S. and Canada that met with a standing ovation. Hazzan or Cantor refers to a “synagogue official who sings liturgical music.” In this case Hazzan Propis structures, his concerts based
in traditional Jewish music while moving in a new direction. At the March 30th he will perform with friends a program focusing on “favorites from the Broadway Stage.” Propis has taken the world of religious music to a new dimension. This move has generated rave reviews from The New York Times( they said his performance at Carnegie Hall was “stunning, ebullient”), the Houston Chronicle ( he is a cantor who “sings from the soul whose strong tenor voice sings out in prayer with power and raw emotion) along with a local praise from Phyllis Eisenberg of Palm Desert, “ you don’t want his concert to end, his talent and imagination mix remarkably; he makes you rethink the possibilities of traditional Jewish music. His voice had a stunning range and there’s never a dull moment. You don’t have to be Jewish to enjoy his repertoire.” Hazzan Propis is joined by his friends, Hazan Alisa PomerantzBoro, soloist Shira Fox; the Chris Harden trio and Cantor Herschel Fox, Master of Ceremonies. Tickets for the 7 PM concert can be reserved by calling (760) 568-0024 or on-line at HYPERLINK “http:// www.templeisaiahps.com/”www. templeisaiahps.com. Tickets began at $36 or email ellen@ellengrosser. com.

Dezart Performs – Annual Play Reading Series By Desert Star Staff PALM SPRINGS, Calif.— Dezart Performs, the performing arts non-profit best known for bringing refreshing new works for the stage to the Coachella Valley, has just announced the plays to be read next month in its Sixth Annual Play Reading Series. The not-to-be-missed festival features the talent of actors and directors from all over the Coachella Valley and Los Angeles, said Artistic Director Michael Shaw, in making the announcement. Dezart Performs’ Sixth Annual Play Reading Series will take place on two weekends, Fridays and Saturdays, April 11, 12, 18 and 19, at 7:30 p.m., at the Pearl McManus Theater (Palm Springs Woman’s Club), 314 S. Cahuilla Road, Palm Springs. Tickets are $8 per evening or $25 for the four-night series and may be purchased by calling (800) 838-3006 or online at www.dezartperforms.com. The plays, all original works that range from zany comedy to emotionally charged tragedy, were chosen from 95 submissions by established and emerging playwrights from across the country. Each will be presented only once, so Shaw urges theater-goers to put all four evenings on their calendars. After each reading, audience members will be able to submit a ballot expressing their opinion of the play. The Audience Favorite will be fully produced and staged for the
2014-15 season. The four evenings of the play reading festival are: Friday, April 11: “The (former) Prostitutes Potluck Supper,” a comedy by Frankie Little Hardin. Directed by Michael Shaw, features Gwen Steward (DesertTheatre League award-winner for Outstanding Lead Performer, Revue/Cabaret/ Variety, “Suds”). In small Georgia town south of Atlanta, a group of exceptional women—and one man—meets every month for a potluck supper. They’re a diverse group in age and ethnicity and current occupation but share one thing in common: their former lives as Working Girls. Now they enjoy each other’s company; they share lives, hopes and dreams when they break bread together each month. But there’s a new addition to the group and her arrival is going to call into question everything about who they believe themselves to be. (For mature audiences only. Contains strong language and sexuality.) Saturday, April 12: “Whispers to the Moon,” a drama in two acts by Kris Bauske. Directed by Joan McGillis, features Blanche Mickelson (DTL award-winner for Best Supporting Actress in a Staged Reading, “Invasion of Privacy”). Marcia Mayfield has returned to the same hotel on the Riviera every August for the last forty-two years. There,
she meets up with the one true love of her life, Charles D’Anjou, and they spend two weeks together despite the fact that
each is married to someone else. This summer, however, Marcia’s adult daughter shows up unannounced, and Marcia must juggle her efforts to help Carol choose her life’s path while trying to find a way to tell Charles she must finally end the affair. Can Marcia keep her secret from Carol, and is the affair the only secret Marcia’s hiding? What is the dark secret only Charles knows? Friday, April 18: “The Living Mrs. Del Vecchio,” a comedy in two acts by Larry Ukolowicz. Directed by Don Cilluffo, features Gina Bikales (starred in fall 2013 Dezart Performs’ production of “Invasion of Privacy”). Three women bond on the day of a funeral to form a trialby-jury organization created to chastise anyone who simply ruins a lovely day. Witness their very first trial complete with pizza, a lot of vodka, a spouse tied to a folding chair and dance performances of the awkwardly preposterous kind in this wacky, crazy screwball
comedy destined to tickle your funny bone. Saturday, April 19: “Duck and Cover,” a full-length comedy by Michael Kimball. Directed by Michael Shaw, features Adina Lawson (starred in fall 2013 production of Dezart Performs’ “Exquisite Potential”). It’s October 1962. America’s postwar innocence teeters on the brink of massive social change: civil rights, women’s rights, students’ rights, Vietnam, Dylan and The Beatles, the pill… But in suburban Massachusetts, the Whitebottom home remains sheltered from it all. Twelveyear-old Stevie wants a pair of sneakers. His mother, Claire, would like to get her driver’s license. But husband Hugh, a shoe store manager, sees sneakers and women drivers as the first steps to anarchy. $$$ For The Valley Boys & Girls Clubs By Cara Van Dijk Palm Desert, CA. – The H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation awarded the Boys & Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley (BGCofCV) a matching grant of $150,000, after the organization raised more than that at its 2014 Grand Auction. The annual event brought together more than 550 attendees to support BGCofCV, which serves larger than 7,000 young people in the valley. The H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation matching grant were announced during the philanthropic portion of the live auction when guests make direct financial donations. “We are grateful that the Berger Foundation has rallied this excitement at the auction for many years now,” said Jim Ducatte, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley Foundation. “Announcing the matching grant during bidding seems to encourage more giving because guests know
their contribution will double.” The money raised at the event along with the Berger Foundation grant will support youth development programs at the organization’s five clubhouses, two boxing facilities and three teen centers in Desert Hot Springs, La Quinta, Indio,
Coachella and Mecca. The BGCofCV opened its doors in 1966, and for 45 years has had a tradition of excellence in providing after-school and summer programs for children - especially those who may be labeled at-risk. In addition to the clubhouses and teen’s centers,
the BGCofCV operates three onsite after-school programs. “The Boys & Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley offers working family’s options so that more children have safe places to go,” said Christopher McGuire, Vice President of Programs for the H.N. and Frances C. Berger
Foundation. “We are happy to support the mission of the Boys and Girls Clubs throughout the valley.” For more information about the Boys & Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley, go to www. bgcofcv.org, or call 760-8361160.
the beginning of a relationship” and the New Yorker was quoted as saying, “Terrence McNally is one of our most original and audacious dramatists, and one of our funniest.” To this day, the play resonates with McNally’s witty dialogue, and heart-breaking insights, and continues to challenge the audience to “think ahead.” The play focuses on two
lonely, middle-aged people who are in the midst of their first date. “Johnny” (played by Joel Bryant), is certain he has found his soul mate; “Frankie” (played by Stephanie Dawn Greene) is far more cautious and disinclined to jump to conclusions. As the night unfolds, they slowly start to reveal themselves to each other, and the audience embarks on to see where the story may take them. Clair de Lune in the title refers to a piece of music by Debussy and is pivotal to the play,
the characters, and the story’s conclusion. What unfolds is a touching, sometimes hilarious interplay, with the promise of a relationship beyond a “one‐night stand.”(Ages 18+. Brief nudity and adult language.) The play runs from Wednesday, March 19th through Sunday, April 6, 2014. Tickets are $40.00 and show-time is 7:30pm, Wednesday through Saturday, and 2:00pm for Sunday matinees.

BY ROBERT KINSLER
Legendary Artists Are Celebrated By Robert Kinsler This week marks the release of new discs from iconic country singer Johnny Cash and prog-rock powerhouse Asia, as well as a reworking of many of Bob Dylan’s best 1980s songs courtesy of a number of modern day artists.
Artist: Johnny Cash Title: Out Among The Stars (Legacy Recordings/ Sony Music) You might like if you enjoy: Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings Tell me more: A collection of lost tracks recorded by the late Johnny Cash in the early 1980s are featured on the wonderful “Out Among The Stars.” This is no mere reworking of previously-

The Man In Black’s gift for musical storytelling (“If I Told You Who It Was,” “I Drove Her Out Of My Mind”), heartfelt country ballads (“Tennessee”), rockabilly (“Rock and Roll Shoes”) and his singular gift singing on a duet (“I’m Moving On” with Waylon Jennings; “Don’t You Think It’s Come Our Time” with June Carter Cash) and faith-minded country gospel (“I Came to Believe”) shine across this album. His emotive and sparse “She Used To Love Me A Lot” resonates with the power of his Rick Rubin-produced American Recordings ‘90s releases.

S P O RT S Palm Desert Has Its Way With Patriot DVL BASEBALL ROUNDUP BY DANIEL MARINELLI
RIVERSIDE – The Palm Desert High School Aztecs steam rolled the Riverside-based Patriot High School Warriors 14-4 on Saturday’s Corona Centennial Tournament, but not without some light controversy. In spite of Travis Maniot stealing home to score the Aztecs’ first run, the most interesting part of the game came in the fourth inning, when the umpire ejected two Warriors coaches and a Warriors player. It started in the second inning, when Palm Desert head Coach Darol Salazar asked the umpire to put the kibosh on the Warriors players’ noisy cheering. Warriors head coach Otis Williams believed this was an odd request – since cheering and being loud is a normal part of high school baseball. Yet, the ump obliged Coach Salazar’s plea, and in the top of the second inning, the ump warned Coach Williams that his teams cheering was getting out of hand. Two innings, 10 Aztecs runs, and two additional warnings later, the ump ejected Coach Williams for being unable to control his own emotions and – according to the umpire – his teams ‘loud and obnoxious’ cheering. Through three and a half innings, down 12-1, the Warriors felt they had nothing to lose, and began to taunt the umpire – which did not
help the Warriors cause. Following the ejection of Williams, a Patriot assistant coach was expelled for the same offense. In the ensuing half inning, Aztecs pitcher Brody Kato hit Andrew Martinez with the pitch. With the ball rolling around the batters’ box, the Warriors on-deck batter, Andrew Burt, picked up the ball, pretended to hand it to the ump, and intentionally dropped it – just as the ump was taking the hand-
off. Burt was rightfully ejected, waving to his incited fans as he jogged off the field. “[Coach Salazar] said that his players couldn’t focus and concentrate with the loud cheering, so he told [the ump] to tell us to stop,” Burt said. When asked about his automatic nextgame ejection, Burt simply replied, “I don’t care, it was worth it.” After the three ejections, the Aztecs scored two more in the
sixth inning, ballooning the lead to 14-1. Palm Desert gave up three runs in the seventh inning to make the Warriors’ 10-run loss slightly more respectable. Kyle Kabeary led the Aztecs with three hits (2B and 3B), one RBI and three runs. Gil Sauceda – who relieved Kato after three innings – and the home-stealer Maniot led Palm Desert with two RBIs, apiece. Senior Brody Kato had three strikeouts in three
innings in the win. On March 24, the Aztecs began play in the Coachella Valley’s Rotary Tournament with a home double-header against the Whittier-based California High School Condors and the Burbank-based Burroughs High School Indians. On April 1, the Aztecs regular season begins against the Xavier Prep High School Saints at Palm Desert High School.
Moreno Valley – For the second time in 10 days, the La Quinta High School Blackhawks bested the Canyon Springs High School Cougars; except this time, the Blackhawks did not need an extra inning. In their first meeting on March 11, the Blackhawks struggled to score in a 2-1, eighth-inning defeat of the Cougars at La Quinta High School. Last Thursday, however, La Quinta’s bats were live and merciless. The Blackhawks got on the scoreboard early with four runs in the first inning. The Blackhawks’ offensive onslaught continued in the second inning. After gaining two more runs to make the total 6-0, Nic Muro hit a two-out, bases-clearing double, which gave La Quinta a 9-0 lead. Despite pitching a no-hitter through four innings, head coach Brent Conley elected to take out the young flamethrower. Frankie Lopez entered the game to attempt to save Estrada’s nohitter, but the first Cougars batter Lopez faced, Cody Cervantes, broke it up with a hit. Still in the bottom of the fifth inning, after the no-hitter was lost; defensive chaos ensued for La Quinta. Three Blackhawks errors,
a wild pitch, followed by an Isaac Flores infield single and a Chris Sankey double led to five Canyon Springs runs. Lopez finally got Aaron Finley to pop out and end the inning, but not before the Cougars significantly tightened the once nine-run gap. In the top of the seventh inning, the Blackhawks showed great patience in not swinging at bad pitches. After loading the bases, Junior Dennis Zanesco singled, Joey Warner walked and a Jeremiah Estrada hit a sacrifice fly to center, extending La Quinta’s lead to 12-5. Lopez did allow one more run in the Cougars’ final at-bat but for the most part, after his shaky fifth inning, pitched a solid remainder of the game. The Blackhawks’ 12-6 win is their fifth in a row – the Blackhawks longest successful streak since winning 10 consecutive games last season. On March 24, the Blackhawks took on the Indio High School Rajahs at La Quinta High School in the Coachella Valley’s Rotary Tournament. The Blackhawks begin DVL play against the Indio High School Rajahs at La Quinta High School on April 1.
