Take it. Share it. Step OUT. Americans are urged to take the Diabetes Risk Test By Desert Star Staff Palm Desert, CA – KMIRTV has teamed up with the American Diabetes Association and Walgreens. Tuesday, March 25, 2014, was the 26th Annual American Diabetes Association Alert Day, a one-day, “wake-up call” asking the American public to take the Diabetes Risk Test to find out if they are at risk for developing type two diabetes. Diabetes is a serious disease
that strikes nearly 26 million Americans, including 611,000 people living in the Riverside, San Bernardino, Imperial and San Diego counties. A quarter of those affected by diabetes are not aware that they have the disease. An additional 79 million, or one in three adults, have prediabetes 1.8 million people in the Greater San Diego Area, which means that their blood glucose (sugar) is higher than normal, but
not high enough to be classified as diabetes. Early intervention via lifestyle changes such as weight loss and increased physical activity can help delay or prevent the onset of type two diabetes. Unfortunately, diagnosis often comes seven to 10 years after the onset of the disease, after disabling and even deadly complications have had time to develop. Therefore, early diagnosis is critical to

in the Clair de Lune…” DramaLogue said, “A richly warm, humorous, clear-eyed portrait of the beginning of a relationship” and the New Yorker was quoted as saying, “Terrence McNally is one of our most original and
audacious dramatists, and one of our funniest.” To this day, the play resonates with McNally’s witty dialogue, and heart-breaking insights, and continues to challenge the audience to “think ahead.” The play focuses on two lonely, middle-aged people who are in the midst of their first date. “Johnny” (played by Joel Bryant), is certain he has found his soul mate; “Frankie” (played by Stephanie Dawn Greene) is far more cautious and disinclined to jump to conclusions. As the night unfolds, they slowly start to reveal themselves to each other, and the audience embarks on to see where the story may take them. Clair de Lune in the title refers to a piece of music by Debussy and is pivotal to the play, the characters, and the story’s conclusion. What unfolds is a touching, sometimes hilarious interplay, with the promise of a relationship beyond a “one‐night stand.”(Ages 18+. Brief nudity and adult language.) The play runs from Wednesday, March 19th through Sunday, April 6, 2014. Tickets are $40.00 and show-time is 7:30pm, Wednesday through Saturday, and 2:00pm for Sunday matinees.

Abraham and Justin Timberlake as well as a golden cat or two (portrayed by more than one tabby). The result is purrfect. In fact, the cat is warmer and lovable than our protagonist who often antagonizes those who are closest to him. And if an Oscar category included cat capers this kitty would be in contention. As the film opens Llewyn is singing in a club, his voice and style are intimate and warm, drawing the listener into his world and music. Nevertheless, as we start to know him better, we like him less, wondering why friends stand by him so steadfastly. One pair of admirers, a professor and his wife, have allowed Llewyn to crash overnight. The next morning Llewyn is the last human to leave the apartment. In the process, he leaves the front door open and the cat races out with Llewyn hot pursuit. The film is filled with music performed by Isaacs, Timberlake and Carey Mulligan and others and is the Cohen brother’s fourth collaborations with multiple Grammy and Academy Award winning music producer T Bone Burnett. The DVD comes with a Special Feature on the making of the film and is extremely interesting. The Cohen Brothers and cast members talk about the music, and both Joel and Ethan laugh about the difficulty involved in getting a cat to do what they wanted it to do. However, in the end, the cat characters give very purrr-sonable performances. The film, from Sony

MUSIC
BY ROBERT KINSLER
Legendary Artists Are Celebrated By Robert Kinsler This week marks the release of new discs from iconic country singer Johnny Cash and prog-rock powerhouse Asia, as well as a reworking of many of Bob Dylan’s best 1980s songs courtesy of a number of modern day artists.
Artist: Johnny Cash Title: Out Among The Stars (Legacy Recordings/ Sony Music) You might like if you enjoy: Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings Tell me more: A collection of lost tracks recorded by the late Johnny Cash in the early 1980s are featured on the wonderful “Out Among The Stars.” This is no mere reworking of previously-
heard material; “Out Among The Stars” is a full-length disc of fantastic material produced by Billy Sherrill that showcases Cash’s innumerable talents. The Man In Black’s gift for musical storytelling (“If I Told You Who It Was,” “I Drove Her Out Of My Mind”), heartfelt country ballads (“Tennessee”), rockabilly (“Rock and Roll Shoes”) and his singular gift singing on a duet (“I’m Moving On” with Waylon Jennings; “Don’t You Think It’s Come Our Time” with June Carter Cash) and faith-minded country gospel (“I Came to Believe”) shine across this album. His emotive and sparse “She Used To Love Me A Lot” resonates with the power of his Rick Rubin-produced American Recordings ‘90s releases.

Built To Spill’s version of the lyrical rocker “Jokerman,” Craig Finn’s authentic take on the softhearted “Sweetheart Like You,” Glen Hansard’s mighty interpretation of the gospeltinged “Pressing On” and Deer Tick’s charming “Night After Night” are among the standouts. S P O RT S Palm Desert Has Its Way With Patriot DVL BASEBALL ROUNDUP BY DANIEL MARINELLI
RIVERSIDE – The Palm Desert High School Aztecs steam rolled the Riverside-based Patriot High School Warriors 14-4 on Saturday’s Corona Centennial Tournament, but not without some light controversy. In spite of Travis Maniot stealing home to score the Aztecs’ first run, the most interesting part of the game came in the fourth inning, when the umpire ejected two Warriors coaches and a Warriors player. It started in the second inning, when Palm Desert head Coach Darol Salazar asked the umpire to put the kibosh on the Warriors players’ noisy cheering. Warriors head coach Otis Williams believed this was an odd request – since cheering and being loud is a normal part of high school baseball. Yet, the ump obliged Coach Salazar’s plea, and in the top of the second inning, the ump warned Coach Williams that his teams cheering was getting out of hand. Two innings, 10 Aztecs runs, and two additional warnings later, the ump ejected Coach Williams for being unable to control his own emotions and – according to the umpire – his teams ‘loud and obnoxious’ cheering. Through three and a half innings, down 12-1, the Warriors felt they had nothing to lose, and began to taunt the umpire – which did not
help the Warriors cause. Following the ejection of Williams, a Patriot assistant coach was expelled for the same offense. In the ensuing half inning, Aztecs pitcher Brody Kato hit Andrew Martinez with the pitch. With the ball rolling around the batters’ box, the Warriors on-deck batter, Andrew Burt, picked up the ball, pretended to hand it to the ump, and intentionally dropped it – just as the ump was taking the hand-
off. Burt was rightfully ejected, waving to his incited fans as he jogged off the field. “[Coach Salazar] said that his players couldn’t focus and concentrate with the loud cheering, so he told [the ump] to tell us to stop,” Burt said. When asked about his automatic nextgame ejection, Burt simply replied, “I don’t care, it was worth it.” After the three ejections, the Aztecs scored two more in the
sixth inning, ballooning the lead to 14-1. Palm Desert gave up three runs in the seventh inning to make the Warriors’ 10-run loss slightly more respectable. Kyle Kabeary led the Aztecs with three hits (2B and 3B), one RBI and three runs. Gil Sauceda – who relieved Kato after three innings – and the home-stealer Maniot led Palm Desert with two RBIs, apiece. Senior Brody Kato had three strikeouts in three
innings in the win. On March 24, the Aztecs began play in the Coachella Valley’s Rotary Tournament with a home double-header against the Whittier-based California High School Condors and the Burbank-based Burroughs High School Indians. On April 1, the Aztecs regular season begins against the Xavier Prep High School Saints at Palm Desert High School.
Moreno Valley – For the second time in 10 days, the La Quinta High School Blackhawks bested the Canyon Springs High School Cougars; except this time, the Blackhawks did not need an extra inning. In their first meeting on March 11, the Blackhawks struggled to score in a 2-1, eighth-inning defeat of the Cougars at La Quinta High School. Last Thursday, however, La Quinta’s bats were live and merciless. The Blackhawks got on the scoreboard early with four runs in the first inning. The Blackhawks’ offensive onslaught continued in the second inning. After gaining two more runs to make the total 6-0, Nic Muro hit a two-out, bases-clearing double, which gave La Quinta a 9-0 lead. Despite pitching a no-hitter through four innings, head coach Brent Conley elected to take out the young flamethrower. Frankie Lopez entered the game to attempt to save Estrada’s nohitter, but the first Cougars batter Lopez faced, Cody Cervantes, broke it up with a hit. Still in the bottom of the fifth inning, after the no-hitter was lost; defensive chaos ensued for La Quinta. Three Blackhawks errors,
a wild pitch, followed by an Isaac Flores infield single and a Chris Sankey double led to five Canyon Springs runs. Lopez finally got Aaron Finley to pop out and end the inning, but not before the Cougars significantly tightened the once nine-run gap. In the top of the seventh inning, the Blackhawks showed great patience in not swinging at bad pitches. After loading the bases, Junior Dennis Zanesco singled, Joey Warner walked and a Jeremiah Estrada hit a sacrifice fly to center, extending La Quinta’s lead to 12-5. Lopez did allow one more run in the Cougars’ final at-bat but for the most part, after his shaky fifth inning, pitched a solid remainder of the game. The Blackhawks’ 12-6 win is their fifth in a row – the Blackhawks longest successful streak since winning 10 consecutive games last season. On March 24, the Blackhawks took on the Indio High School Rajahs at La Quinta High School in the Coachella Valley’s Rotary Tournament. The Blackhawks begin DVL play against the Indio High School Rajahs at La Quinta High School on April 1.
