“The Empire Crumbles” The FBI ‘reviewing’ suspicious dismissal of Jussie Smollett hoax charges By Desert Star Staff The FBI is reportedly reviewing the surprise dismissal of 16 felony charges against ‘Empire’ actor Jussie Smollett stemming from the hate-crime hoax he staged in January, after his near-exoneration outraged local authorities.
The agency opened an inquiry into “circumstances surrounding dismissal of criminal charges” against Smollett after Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the city’s police department demanded answers regarding the slap on the wrist. The fraudster
received for perpetrating the elaborate hoax, according to ABC Chicago, which specified that the FBI was doing a “review” or “inquiry” rather than a full-scale “investigation.” Not only was Smollett not held accountable for wasting thousands of staff-hours of
the Chicago PD’s time and money – no small matter in such a high-crime city – but his record was sealed, and the charges dropped. Smollett merely forfeited his $10,000 bond and completed 16 hours of community service. After leaving the hearing – which
would have happened in secrecy if not for a last-minute media tipoff by a publicist – the actor even boasted he’d been “truthful and consistent from day one” and thanked the state for “attempting to do what’s Continues on Page 3
Community Health Centers Press Congress for Long-Term Funding By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Seven million Californians get medical treatment at Community Health Centers each year, and those centers say funding issues for this crucial part of the safety net are throwing the system into chaos. Starting today, thousands of providers are gathering in Washington, D.C., to chart a path forward and fan out across Capitol Hill to meet with lawmakers. James Luisi, chief executive of NEW Health in Boston and board chair for the National Association of Community Health Centers,
said he wants Congress to approve the Community Health Investment, Modernization, and Excellence (CHIME) Act, which would authorize funding in five-year blocks. “We want that funding extended, hopefully for at least another five years,” he said, “so that we can have some stable funding; and so that health centers will be able to access capital and meet their needs without worrying about going back and advocating for that funding to be extended again.” Community health centers treat people even if Continues on Page 3

‘We need this in the Olympics ASAP!’
By Desert Star Staff Russian ‘male slapping championships’ proves a huge hit The ‘male slapping championships,’ an eyewatering new sport originating
in Siberia, Russia, which sees men open-palm striking each other into submission, has proved a huge hit online - and has to be seen to be believed. The brutal championships were held at the Siberian
Power Show 2019 in Krasnoyarsk and required each competitor to slap their opponent standing on the other side of the table into submission. Surprisingly, it featured
no shortage of slaphappy sluggers eager to test their strength on each other’s cheeks. The bizarre annual contest was eventually won by bearded hulk Vasily Kamotskiy, a 370-pound local weightlifter who had delivered a series of knockout blows to his opponents on the way to winning the coveted title. A video of Kamotskiy’s exploits, along with some of the best hits and knockouts from the event, has since gone viral online, shocking viewers who responded in either fits of laughter or just paling shock from countries as far as Nigeria, Denmark, the Netherlands, India, and the US. Social media users begged for the sport to be included in the Olympics. Other, more political-savvy
By Desert Star Staff British boxer Sam Maxwell was being beaten up and taunted by showboating opponent Sabri Sederi when he pulled out a stunningly satisfying punch to knock the Frenchman out with just 14 seconds remaining and restore a little karma. Heading into the 10th and final round of their fight
for the WBO European super lightweight title at Leicester Arena, home fighter Maxwell was cutting a shopworn figure in the ring, wearing bruises and black eyes from being dropped twice early and then handily outclassed throughout the fight. Believing victory was imminent, Sederi began to drop his hands, dance around and even blow a kiss to the
exhausted Maxwell to close out the final moments, tormenting the gassed Liverpool fighter. Just as Sederi was in a rhythm of showboating, Maxwell, who had respectably held his guard and boxed professionally throughout, detonated a right to the chin that sent Seder’s body flopping to the canvas. After landing heavily, a disorientated Sederi struggled to his feet, but when he tumbled into the ropes,
referee Steve Gray rightly waved the contest off with just 14 seconds remaining. As well as snatching victory from the jaws of defeat, Maxwell also took Sederi’s unbeaten record and sent social media into raptures for teaching a valuable lesson to a cocky opponent. Maxwell’s own response was to tweet the clip with the caption “ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!?” referencing the famous quote from the
watchers, commented that such a system would be a welcome alternative to presidential debates. The championships, which promises to be a sports platform of interest “from elite athletes to youngsters” was held in the city over March 16-17, charging punters 400 rubles ($6) to feast their eyes on the extreme event, and featured special guests from the world of working out. Its program also saw The World Strongman Cup and Siberian Dance Contest take place and included fringe sports such as arm wrestling, freestyle workout, and pole dancing. Despite interest on the internet, we’re not sure the brand new craze from Russia will catch on, or merely slap the smile off the face of those wanting to give it a try.
film Gladiator, and the hashtag “chat sh*t get Sammed.” Fortunately, Sederi was ok and will live to fight another day. Next time, however, he may think about taking heed of the old boxing adage “hit and not get hit,” rather than focusing on just on the first part. Maxwell kept his unbeaten record and moved to 11 wins with six knockouts as well as capturing the WBO European title and, most importantly, restoring a little karma to the world.

Critics Say State Police ICE Policy Undermines Public Safety
By Desert Star Staff HARRISBURG, Pa. — Civil liberties advocates fear a new immigration enforcement policy adopted by Pennsylvania State Police will enable practices shown to be damaging to families. A coalition of organizations says the new policy takes a few steps in the right direction. It forbids state police from detaining anyone for Immigration and Customs Enforcement without a judicial warrant or for the sole purpose of investigating their immigration status. But according to Golnaz Fakhimi, immigrant rights attorney with the ACLU of Pennsylvania, the policy continues to entangle state

police with ICE in ways not required by law. For example, it allows police to question a person’s immigration status if they believe any law, including traffic violations or immigration laws, may have been broken. “Our concern is that that explicit permission is going to allow troopers on the ground to continue to engage in this unnecessary and ultimately harmful questioning,” Fakhimi said. Prior to the adoption of the policy, the state police had no guidelines. Community groups have raised concerns about racial profiling and collusion with ICE. But Fakhimi believes the exceptions for questioning still allow profiling. And she pointed out that, although not required by law, the new policy does mandate that state police inform ICE any time they arrest someone who is a foreign national. “The way the policy defines ‘foreign national’ is broad enough to sweep in,

The policy also allows the state police to share any information they gather with ICE, whether or not an arrest is made. Fakhimi added that when state law enforcement acts as an extension of immigration
authorities, it discourages immigrants, their families and loved ones, including citizens and permanent residents, from coming forward when they witness or are victims of crimes. “What’s crucial to public safety in our Commonwealth is that all community members feel like they can approach

Foxx recused herself from Smollett’s prosecution following reports that she had attempted to have the initial “hate crime” investigation transferred to the FBI, calling Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson to plead with him to turn over the case. Leaked text messages showed Foxx was initially contacted on Smollett’s behalf by former
Obama aide Tina Tchen. First Assistant State’s Attorney Joseph Magats called the decision to let Smollett off lightly a “just disposition and appropriate resolution to the case,” pointing to his lack of criminal record and the fact that deferred prosecution doesn’t require an admission of guilt. Magats’ predecessor Eric Sussman, however, joined Emanuel in condemning the decision as a “whitewash,” adding, “It makes you think there’s some evidence or something that they don’t want out.” The FBI is reportedly still investigating whether Smollett mailed a threatening letter, complete with a hand-drawn noose and fake anthrax, to himself at Fox’s Empire studios. Smollett was indicted last month on 16 counts of felony disorderly conduct for lying to police and filing a fake police report after staging a bogus “hate crime” in which two masked men beat him up. They yelled racial and homophobic slurs, put a noose around his neck, and poured bleach on him, topping off their March 27, 2019

Moms Clean Air-Force to Enforce Limits on Air Pollution NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A Nashville mother of two young girls is weighing in on an Environmental Protection Agency proposal to weaken rules that regulate mercury and other toxic air emissions from coal-fired power plants. The Mercury and Air Toxics Standards were put into place in 2012, but the EPA now says it’s too expensive for energy companies to comply with them. Zozan Noman traveled to Washington with a group of moms from across the country to testify at the agency’s only public hearing on reversing the rules. She’s concerned about the health effects of mercury pollution on women who are pregnant or are trying to conceive. “Within the last ten months, I have had two miscarriages and cannot figure out why,”Noman states. “As a mother and a wife who would
love to conceive again, I would have to say that the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards are critical to me, as well as life-saving for adults.” Mercury from power plants pollutes the air and seeps into rivers and streams, where it ends up in marine life. Pregnant women in particular face serious risks consuming fish, as studies have shown exposure to mercury in the womb can harm a developing brain and nervous system. The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation recently warned of elevated mercury levels in fish in East Fork Stones River in Rutherford County. Until the MATS rule, there was no unified set of federal laws designed to cap emissions from power plants. The EPA itself previously estimated the standards would reduce mercury emissions from the plants by 90 percent, while
Nashville mother, Zozan Noman (right) testified at an EPA hearing in Washington. She opposes rolling back the Mercury, and Air Toxics Standards rule. (Moms Clean Air Force) also shrinking emissions of arsenic and other pollutants. Noman says she’s witnessed firsthand the consequences of poor air quality on children, including a nephew who has asthma. “Probably the most
devastating thing for me to witness was a child gasping for breath,” she relates. “And it was difficult, of course, to get a toddler to use an asthma machine for more than five minutes.” Previous polls have found
that more than 70 percent of Americans support keeping the emissions standards in place. The EPA is taking public comments about the proposal to end them online, until April 17.
Your Broadcast TV Channels May Change Frequencies
NBC PS Max Rodriguez If you rely on an antenna for your TV viewing, changes between now and July 2020 may affect reception of some of your channels. As part of the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) work to make more airwaves available for high-speed mobile broadband services, some TV stations in cities across the United States are changing their over-the-air broadcast frequencies. While the channel numbers you see on the TV are not changing, viewers will need to rescan their televisions to update to the new frequencies so they can continue receiving those channels. Viewers will not need to buy a new TV or purchase a converter box. Only those who use an antenna to watch local channels need to rescan their TVs; cable and satellite subscribers are not affected by these changes. Not all channels are changing and the changes are happening on a rolling basis, so not all channels will change at the same time. Some viewers may need to rescan their televisions and converter boxes multiple times over the transition period. Viewers should look for additional announcements on local channels and rescan when those changes take place. Consider these common transition questions to ensure you’re prepared: How will I know it’s time to scan? Some local TV channels will change frequencies at

various times through mid2020. Viewers should be on the lookout for public service announcements, “crawls” running across the bottom of TV screens and other notifications from local stations announcing “rescan days” on which viewers will need to rescan. Broadcasters will give viewers at least 30 days of notice that their frequency change is approaching. A good rule of thumb is to rescan your TV anytime you notice a channel missing. If you haven’t rescanned in a while, you may be
surprised by how many channels are now available. How many people will be affected by the transition? Millions of Americans nationwide who watch television for free with an antenna will be affected. What is the advantage of making the frequency changes? The benefit is that more airwaves will be available to meet consumer demand for increased mobile broadband capacity, the new 5G and other advanced high-
speed mobile broadband services being developed. How can I find out which channels are changing? The FCC website has an interactive map that allows viewers to insert their address to see which local channels are making a transition in their market. To access the map, visit fcc.gov/media/ engineering/dtvmaps. Once you enter your location information, such as city and state or zip code, you will be able to view a list of stations in your area.
Rebate workshop
Stations that are changing frequencies will have an “R” in the last column marked “IA.” Click on the station to see the time period during which each affected station will make the change. To find the specific “rescan day” for a particular station, watch for its on-air announcements and notices or check its website for information. For more information and tips on how to rescan, visit fcc.gov/TVrescan or call 1-888-CALLFCC (1-888-225-5322).

Oscar-Winning ‘Green Book’ Now on DVD
By Desert Star Staff This year “Green Book” received five Oscar nominations-- Best Leading and Supporting Actor (Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali), Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. On Sunday, February 24th “Green Book” took home the gold for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Screenplay and this uplifting motion picture will win your heart as well. It’s a feelgood story about real people. The film’s title is based on the 1936 book by Victor Hugo Green, “The Negro Motorist Green Book,” which listed the names of hotels where black travelers could find safe accommodations in the segregated South. Mortensen, who gained 40 pounds for the role, plays Italian American Frank Anthony (Tony the Lip) Vallelonga, a no-nonsense bouncer at New York’s famed Copacabana. The film begins as Tony forcefully throws a belligerent, unruly Copa customer out in the street--head first. He’s a tough guy, but he’s also a
warm-hearted family man who loves his wife Delores (Linda Cardellini) and his kids. (His son Nick co-wrote the Oscarwinning screenplay for “Green Book” with director Peter Farrelly and Brian Currie). As the story begins, the Copa is about to close for a few months for renovations, and Tony needs to find a short-term job until the famed nightclub reopens. He could become a short-term enforcer for the Mob, but he’d rather not have a Mafia-related job, so he looks for something else. An opportunity arises when he gets a call from gifted pianist Don Shirley (Oscar winner Mahershala) who is about to go on a concert tour in the Deep South. He not only needs a driver, but he also needs a bodyguard and Tony fits the bill. Their first meeting in Shirley’s apartment above Carnegie Hall doesn’t go well. Tony refuses the offer, but eventually, he relents since the pay is good. Tony is a gregarious guy who relishes embellishing a good story verbally. Shirley, on the other hand, prefers to drive in silence. He also doesn’t like
the way Tony eats fried chicken with his hands. Tony tells him not to knock it till he’s tried it as he hands the pianist a piece to enjoy sans knife and fork. Before he leaves on the trip, Tony reluctantly promises Delores he will write often. As Shirley watches Tony struggle to compose a decent letter, he offers to help him put his true feelings into romantic words. Soon Tony’s letters are the envy of all his wife’s friends who ask their hubbies to write
them a love letter like Tony’s. Little by little the two men become friends asTony keeps Shirley safe from the racists they encounter on their journey. Tony also observes the hypocrisy of rich white Southerners who willingly come to hear Shirley play in concert but will not let him sit down to eat with them before the music begins. In the end, the two men form a friendship that lasted until they died.
“Green Book,” rated PG 13 for thematic content, language including racial epithets, smoking, and some violence and suggestive material, has a running time of 2 hours, 10 minutes. The DVD contains added information and interviews with the filmmakers. Other Oscar nominees now available on DVD include: “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “The Favorite, “A Star Is Born” and “Blackkklansman.”
Report: SNAP Work Requirements Cause Job Losses, Not Gains By Desert Star Staff INDIANAPOLIS - A plan to put work requirements on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - formerly food stamps - would cost the American economy nearly $180,000 jobs, according to a new analysis. Language is requiring that able-bodied adults prove they are working or moving toward jobs to get SNAP benefits was defeated when proposed for the last federal Farm Bill. The Trump administration now says it will enact the requirement by administrative order. Rebecca Vallas, vice president for anti-poverty policy at the Center for American Progress, looked at its impact on grocery stores over ten years. “If that one cut were to take effect, we would see 178,000 fewer jobs,” she said. “When you cut programs like SNAP, you don’t just make more families hungry. You also weaken local economies.” The administration has argued that the move would push people into the workforce, but pilot projects in several states have found few have done so. The pilot projects did see higher demand at food banks. According to White House projections, about three-quarters of a million individuals and households would lose SNAP www.desertstarweekly.com
benefits. The grocery industry has said that would translate into falling sales, especially in poor neighborhoods, where customers using SNAP benefits are a lifeline for the stores and their employees. “The grocery industry is strongly opposed to cuts to the SNAP program,” said Jonathan Williams, communications director for the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 400, which covers six states and Washington, D.C. “Their businesses rely on these benefits being redeemed at their stores. It would be a major blow were any cuts to occur.” Supporters of work requirements have argued that reduced spending will help ease the federal budget deficit. However, Vallas said SNAP is a much more effective economic stimulus than the big tax cut that the SNAP cutback would help pay for. She added that people are more likely to get and keep a job when they can feed their families. “The dirty little secret about so-called ‘work requirements’ is that they don’t create a single job and they don’t raise anyone’s wages,” she said. “Making someone hungrier isn’t going to help them find work any faster.” The analysis is online at americanprogress.org.
According to the grocery industry, some stores depend on purchases made with SNAP benefits for as much as half of their sales. (Pixabay) Best Quality! Best Price! Guaranteed!

US airstrikes kill a dozen Afghan civilians
By Desert Star Staff American airstrikes have killed around a dozen Afghan civilians in the northern province of Kunduz, local officials have said. The strikes came as US-backed Afghan forces and Taliban militants vie for control of the area. One provincial councilor put the death toll at twelve, while another estimated that 13 civilians died, including children, in Saturday’s strikes. NATO spokeswoman Sergeant. Debra Richardson told Reuters that the alliance’s Resolute Support mission is aware of the casualty reports, and that it investigates all such credible allegations. “We take every measure to prevent civilian casualties, in contrast to the Taliban who intentionally hide behind women and children,” Richardson said in a statement. Afghan and coalition forces have been locked in intense combat with the Taliban in Kunduz and Helmand
provinces recently, despite ongoing peace talks in Qatar between the Taliban and the US. Afghan and US forces fought the Taliban in Kunduz for over 30 hours on Friday and Saturday, Richardson said, during which time the airstrike took place. Two US soldiers were killed in the fighting, while four Afghan soldiers lost their lives, according to Reuters. In the southern province of Helmand, the situation was equally dire over the weekend. Taliban attacks in Helmand’s Sang in district killed as many as 65 Afghan troops and police officers between Friday and Saturday, local politicians told the New York Times. However, precise casualty figures are difficult to ascertain. Amidst the chaos, the Taliban has re-emerged as a formidable opponent. A report by the US Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, released in January, found that the Afghan
By Desert Star Staff Romania will move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, Prime Minister Viorica Dancila announced at the AIPAC summit in Washington on Sunday, in a controversial move that goes against the rest of the European Union. Speaking at the Israel lobby group American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s (AIPAC) conference, Dancila said Romania intends to relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which she referred to as Israel’s capital, in a move that follows the US’ controversial decision to do so last year. Most nations with diplomatic relations with Israel have their embassies in Tel Aviv, as, although Israel claims Jerusalem as its capital, it is not recognized as such by the international community. Palestinians want East Jerusalem as their future capital, and Israel has occupied East Jerusalem since the 1967 war, when it annexed the area from the
rest of the West Bank. Dancila is currently president of the Council of the European Union and the move is a marked departure from the position held by the rest of the EU. Romania, along with Hungary and the Czech Republic, reportedly blocked an EU resolution objecting to the US embassy move, which said Jerusalem should be capital of both Israel and Palestine. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked Dancila to move Romania’s embassy when she visited Israel in January. “I hope you will act to stop the bad resolutions against Israel in the European Union,” he said. “And also, of course, to move your embassy and other embassies to Jerusalem.” Romanian President Klaus Iohannis called for Dancila to resign last April after she pushed a secret memorandum to move the embassy without consulting him, and after she went on a state visit to Israel without consulting him. As president,
government now controls only half of the country’s 407 districts, a drop of two percentage points since last summer. A more pessimistic independent analysis puts the government in control of only 35 percent of these districts, with the remainder contested
or under Taliban rule. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said in January that around 45,000 Afghan security personnel have been killed since he took office in September 2014, roughly 849 per month. Suicide attacks by Taliban fighters
and aerial attacks from US and coalition forces also killed more Afghan civilians in 2018 than in any other year since the US invasion in 2001, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan revealed last month.
Romania breaks with EU to relocate its Israeli embassy to Jerusalem Iohannis is in charge of foreign policy and has the final decision on such moves.
