By Desert Star Staff Two accountants from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) have been barred from future Oscars ceremonies in the wake of a mistake that led to the wrong movie being announced as Best Picture last Sunday night, the Academy said. Martha Ruiz and Brian Cullinan, who were blamed for the envelope mix-up, will remain partners at the prestigious accounting firm, according to a company spokesman. Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs said Brian Cullinan caused the mix-up because he was distracted backstage as he was tweeting throughout the show. The Academy’s relationship with PwC as a whole

is under the review she added. Cullinan had reportedly tweeted a picture of best actress winner Emma Stone in the minutes before he was due to hand the envelope containing the best picture winner to the presenters. The tweet was later deleted. According to PwC, Cullinan mistakenly handed the wrong envelope to presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. After several seconds of hesitation, Dunaway announced La La Land as the winner. As the La La Land cast and producers came on stage and started giving acceptance speeches, the mistake was recognized. Then, Jordan Horowitz, the musical’s

producer, interrupted the proceedings to announce that Moonlight was the real winner. PwC had taken full responsibility for the fiasco. “Once the error occurred, protocols for correcting it were not followed through quickly enough by Mr. Cullinan or his partner,” the firm said in a statement. Two sets of sealed envelopes with the names of all 24 Oscar winners are traditionally kept by two PwC accountants on opposite sides of the stage. The two hand the envelopes to the respective presenters when each category is announced. A day after the ceremony, the Academy apologized to all

Golf Cart Thief Caught Running Chop Shop By KMIR News Staff La Quinta, CA -On February 27, 2017, the Riverside Auto-Theft Interdiction Detail (RAID) became involved in an investigation regarding the theft of a golf cart within the gated community of the Indian Wells Country Club on February 15, 2017. The victim believed he located his custom golf cart for sale on Craigslist. RAID contacted the person in the Craigslist ad and determined he already sold the golf cart to an innocent purchaser. RAID contacted the purchaser and confirmed he was in

possession of the stolen golf cart at his residence in the high desert. The San Bernardino County Auto Theft Task Force (SANCATT) responded to the residence and recovered the custom golf cart valued at $17,000. During this investigation, RAID task force members identified Justin Schultz as the suspect responsible for the theft and sale of the golf cart. RAID task force members along with the assistance of the Indian Wells Police Special Enforcement Team served a search warrant at Schultz’ residence in the 53000 Block of Avenida Rubio, in the city

of La Quinta. During a search of the residence, investigators located an additional custom golf cart valued at $15,500. This golf cart was reported stolen on February 21, 2017, from the La Quinta Resort. Investigators determined Schultz was operating a chop shop out of the residence and found various golf cart parts packaged for resale. Justin Schultz was arrested and booked into Riverside County for violation of 10801 VC, Operating a

Student exhibition at Melissa Morgan Fine Art

By Madeline Zuckerman Idyllwild Arts Academy, Southern California’s prestigious boarding arts high school, will once again host its highly-anticipated Visual Arts Student Exhibition at the internationally known Melissa Morgan Fine Art on El Paseo in Palm Desert. A reception at the Gallery featuring a cocktail reception with live jazz will take place on Friday, March 3rd at 6:00 p.m., with faculty, visual art students, families and friends of Idyllwild Arts Academy in attendance. “We are grateful to

Melissa Morgan and the Melissa Fine Art for exhibiting our students’ work for a fourth consecutive year,” stated Pamela Jordan, President of Idyllwild Arts Foundation and Head of School. “This exhibit is something the students, as well as the community looks forward to with great enthusiasm each year. This program teaches our students about both the technical and professional side of selling art in a retail space,” Jordan continued. On display that evening will be paintings, ceramics,

drawings, printmaking, computer graphics, sculptures, and photography created by the school’s cutting-edge young artists. Each student will present their particular artwork, and talk about what inspired and influenced them to create it. All displayed artwork will be available for purchase from March 3rd through March 9th to benefit these talented visual art students. “The student work shown in this exhibit is remarkable for its range of mediums, technical skill, conceptual

language, and imaginative scope,” stated David ReidMarr, Chair, Visual Arts Department of Idyllwild Arts Academy. “It is a reflection of the richness of the Visual Arts Program and the talented and dedicated faculty that teaches in it. Many thanks to Melissa Morgan and her staff. It is a wonderful gift to the students to show their work in this space,” he continued. Melissa Morgan Fine Art is the premier destination in the Coachella Valley, representing cutting-edge international contemporary art for both

the savvy collector and for those newer to the art world. Housed in its 6,500 square feet of space, the Gallery features paintings, mixed media, sculpture, glass, tapestry and photography. Annually the gallery showcases an extensive schedule of solo and thematic group exhibitions; interpretive programming, artist and curator lectured, as well as panel discussions. Jeffrey Spakes Butterfly Art Dedication Continued from Page 1 me. I devoured every book on art, engineering and fashion! Looking back on my youth, it’s no exaggeration that ‘art saved my life’. In the early 1990s, I was surviving by waiting tables for the ‘rich and famous’. I loved to do the arrangements for the tables. This evolved into creating elaborate set designs for theme parties -- it opened the door to a wondrous adventure in design and imagination. — From a 10 foot tall red high heel shoes, to a pair of 20 feet tall giraffes — were just a few of my favorite commissions. My move into metal art began with a design commission for the Buschlen Mowatt Art Gallery metal work design and fabrication. The commission included a companion piece of functional public art — a bus stop, which is still located on Hwy 111 and Portola in

In uncovering the metal, nature provided me a wonderful suggestion, which I built upon, accelerating the oxidation process and allowing for a ‘living interaction’ between nature and art. These ‘reactions have been incorporated into the architectural design of several homes and buildings in the Coachella Valley. In 2007, I went back east for a couple of years. I had the opportunity to work with the latest digital technologies in terms of water jet, plasma and advanced polishing and finishing for metal art. I returned to the Palm Springs area in 2012. The Oscars - Oh What A Night

The 2017 Oscar telecast has come and gone, but it will go down in Oscar’s history in the way the evening ended, with a monumental gaffe in which the wrong winner for the best picture was announced. Presenter Warren Beatty looked at the red envelope handed to him and seemed at a loss for words, so he handed it to Faye Dunaway, who announced, “La La Land” had won as the best picture of the year. Feeling Stressed by Politics? Doctors Have Concerns

A spike in stress since last November’s election has some mental health professionals concerned. (Whitehouse.gov) By Desert Star Staff ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- No matter which way you cast your vote, the level of emotion surrounding President Trump’s first several weeks in office is undeniable, and that has mental health professionals concerned. With executive orders, contested confirmations and “alternative facts” now part of the daily vocabulary, many Michiganders are finding it tough to separate politics from the rest of their lives. Clinical psychologist Todd Favorite, who heads up the University of Michigan Psychological Clinic, said it’s been a long time since so many people in the general public experienced this consistent level of stress over American politics. “So if you’re having a hard time in relationships, or you’re overly worried, or you’re irritable all the time, or you’re not able to do your work, those would be our markers for where this is over the bounds of good

function,” Favorite said. He explained that stress increases cortisol levels, which can contribute to high blood pressure, heart disease and other health problems. He also said that those who simply can’t find their bearings right now might benefit from talking to their primary care physician or a mental health professional. While everyone deals with stress in different ways, Favorite said there are known self-soothing strategies including meditation, spending time with friends, reading and exercise - that may prove helpful. He said being able to manage technology also is a critical piece. “All of the digital overlay just makes all of this much more vivid,” he said. “And it also makes it hard for individuals who are typically dialed in to these kinds of media to be able to parse out when do I shut it all off, when do I just get away from this and not be stimulated.” Favorite said that because

By Desert Star Staff Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates said it’s too early to dish out money to needy people, though the billionaire accepts the idea of universal basic income (UBI). Over time countries will be rich enough to do this. However we still have a lot of work that should be done - helping older people, helping kids with special needs, having more adults helping in education,” he

said, responding to users’ questions during an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit. UBI is an idea to provide people with a regular allowance regardless of their income or assets. The system can reportedly close gaps in equality, with an individual’s basic needs covered with free cash, funded by massive taxes at the top. “Even the US isn’t rich enough to allow people not to work. Some day we will be,

A spike in stress since last November’s election has some mental health professionals concerned. (Whitehouse.gov) there’s no way of knowing how long the political and social landscape will remain this charged, coping with it will require attention and focus. “We have to intentionally kind of anchor ourselves by behavioral anchors,” he said. “What am I going to do

today? How much am I going to pay attention to the news? How much am I going to do things that make me feel calm or give me a sense of well-being or connection?” Some mental health professionals are calling the current heightened stress

and anxiety levels “PostElection Stress Disorder.” And one California doctor who said he’s seen a sharp increase in alarmingly high blood pressure in patients for whom it was previously wellcontrolled, has coined the phrase “Trumpertension.”

but until then things like the Earned Income Tax Credit will help increase the demand for labor,” the billionaire stressed. The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a form of levy charged to lower-income families in the US to boost savings, incentivize work and help people to escape poverty. The idea of giving people money on a regular basis to increase social welfare has gained momentum in some countries in recent

years. Basic income was initially proposed in the 1960s and briefly tried out in the US and Canada. Finland launched its own two-year long experiment on basic income in January. The country’s authorities randomly chose 2,000 recipients of social assistance and started paying them €560 a month per month. Canada and the Netherlands have also announced similar experiments.

Last year, the Japanese government announced plans to issue money ‘vouchers’ for low-income young people to halt a significant decline in consumption within the age bracket. New Zealand is also debating UBI. Aiming to reduce poverty India’s Finance Ministry is considering replacing the country’s welfare programs with a basic income.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Modernism Week is so full of events that it is hard to be able to take in everything. I talked with people that have come from all over the U.S., Canada and a few from the UK and other countries to take part in all that Modernism Week offer. The Week also offers a lot of Parties for guests to enjoy. One of the favorite events was the tour of the Cristopher Kennedy Compound on the first Sunday. The compound was full of designer ideas. There were rooms for each designer’s idea for a beautiful home or room. I noticed that wallpaper was making a big comeback as a lot of the rooms featured lively wallpaper designs. Media was invited early for a couple of hours to be able to interview the artists. The guests arrived in buses March 3, 2017

for a breakfast buffet and tour. Christopher Kennedy posed for photos by the sculpture in the courtyard in front of the house. The house is a show house for designers to show their business. Guests roamed freely thru out the house and back yard by the pool. Guests could speak to the designers about their works and were open to the public for three days. Bus tours on a red double-decker bus was a favorite as they offered transportation to the many tours, and guests could view Palm Springs in a very unique way. Guests were also able to view the many businesses that held special events just for this Modernism Week. Another fun time was going back in time to view the Vintage Trailer show that was held at the Hilton Hotel. Films and Lectures were always sold out. The Show and Sale by vendors were held at the Palm Springs Convention Center in Feb,18 through 20.

Desert Art promotes a diverse palette By Pamela Price The range of designs debuted during Modernism Week struck a chord with fans such as Leslie Westbrook of Santa Barbara, a fine art and antique specialist, after she was wowed by the view from Chino Canyon Project, a design project credited to Dog Aiken. “The setting was spectacular with a view across the valley floor,” she said. Turning time back a few generations, the Vintage Poster Pop-Up Shop curated by Elizabeth Norris of Vintage European Posters displayed her collection of posters at the Antique Galleries of Palm Springs, dominating the Sunny Dunes Antique District, Feb. 24-26. Her impressive oversized posters, some nearly

five feet high, capture the essence of exotic travel from Cairo to Capri, when the jet age was in its infancy. Antique Galleries also displays original furnishings from the midcentury, such as a ten-piece sectional divan and a Sputnik Chandelier, which could have had a stint in a classic movie set from the mid 1950s. As Ms. Westbrook departed Palm Springs after three days of delving into “the modernism magic” she couldn’t help but be impressed. While driving by the windmills, Joshua Trees and countless cacti she wistfully commented, “your desert presents itself as a blank canvas for many kinds of art, from the site-specific art to a home entirely wrapped

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic The ‘boys’ won Tony Awards in the 80s with such gay-themed shows as “Torch Song Trilogy and nabbed another with the musical “La Cage aux Folles “(1983), and yet another, with the blockbuster musical hit “Kinky Boots” in 2013; all from the creative brain of Harvey Fierstein. Now it’s the ‘girls’ turn in the first decade of the 21st century to begin collecting Tony Awards. First and foremost is the success of the 2015 Tony Award winner “Fun Home”, based on the graphic novel by Alison Bechdel, with music by Jeanine Tesori and lyrics and book by Lisa Kron. The musical’s national tour production, now on the stage of The Ahmanson Theatre, is an eye-opening and somewhat of a ground-breaking production, in that it tells the story of a gay young woman’s sexual awakening in a troubled Pennsylvania family. American

families have been dealing with gay children not knowing how to “come out” to their parents or society in general, for years. For me, “Fun Home” should be required reading or viewing for all parents, relatives, and education professionals who interact with students. I’m no health professional or an academic, but it appears to me that “Fun Home”, comes across as a pretty good vehicle for a ‘Sexual Identity Course 101’, help aid. The intriguing and compelling story, brilliantly directed by Sam Gold, becomes all the more revealing when everyone has an opportunity to view, up close and personal (even in a theatre setting) the emotions of young people who do not understand what is happening inside their bodies, and who only know that they feel estranged, in some way, from society. The biggest fear of course, is the fear of rejection and stigmatization on the part of their parents and friends. Without some guidance that is a very scary prospect indeed.

She commented, “both Palm Springs and Las Vegas share something in common besides casinos. They share a cultural commitment by promoting art and design to generate tourism. “It’s a winning combination,” she said. We couldn’t agree more! L-R: Alessandra Baldacchino as ‘Small Alison’, Pierson Salvador as ‘Christian’ and Lennon Nate Hammond as ‘John’ Photo by Joan Marcus. Director Gold cleverly employs cinema techniques in the telling of the “Fun Home” story. Through flashbacks and flash-forwards, Kate Shindle narrates for the audience the character of Alison (Alison Bechdal’s alter-ego). We see her at various stages in her life: Small Alison, an elementary student wonderfully played and sung by Alessandra Baldacchino, and Medium Alison, an astonishing Abby Corrigan, as a highschool senior entering college, who, when she meets classmate Joan (played by Karen Eilbacher), she falls head over heels and has an epiphany as to her sexuality. When Alison in flashback discusses her home life growing up, we meet her Father Bruce, (Robert Petkoff in a finely judged performance), a closeted gay man March 1, 2017

who loves his wife Helen (steadfastly and knowingly played by Susan Moniz) and his three children: Alison, John (Lennon Nate Hammond) and Christian (Pierson Salvador), but handyman Roy (Robert Hager) also has Bruce’s attention. The story that takes place on the Ahmanson stage, and I’m guessing here, is probably not that much different from what takes place in the homes of families all over the world. Despite the emotional content of the story, “Fun Home”, is after all, a winning musical with singing and dancing, and lots of light comedy moments. The beauty of the production lies in the compelling and poignant performances of the cast. The opening night audience was definitely on the wavelength of Alison Bechdel, Jeanine Tesori, and Lisa Kron. Every nuanced scene and innuendo that the straight audience couldn’t decode, brought knowing smiles and on-thenose laughter from those in the audience as having

‘been there, done that’ too. Director Gold’s staging of his three ‘Alisons’ is somewhat analogous to cinema’s ‘dream mode’, in that the characters can see themselves in a scene or sequence while the action in the story unfolds. It’s very effective and helps the audience to keep track of all the moving parts in the production in perspective. Gold’s creative team led by Scenic Designer David Zinn, who also designed the Costumes delivers the goods in both disciplines. The Lighting Design is created by Ben Stanton and the Sound Design by Kai Harada, along with Hair and Wig Designer Rick Caroto, complete the team. Music director Micha Young, along with Orchestrations by John Clancy and Music Coordination by Antoine Silverman and a nine-person orchestra, put the finishing touches on this splendid and entertaining production. “Fun Home” performs at The Ahmanson Theatre and runs through April 1, 2017.

Oscar Night at El Paseo

Patti Gribow, Sandie Newton, and Donna Mills. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause Oscar Night is a big night across the Desert with so many Oscar Parties. The Shops on El Paseo played host to the 3rd annual Oscar Party on El Paseo, Oscars Under the Stars. Red Carpet arrivals started at 4 in the afternoon. The event benefited Palm Springs Women In Film and Television. There was a special concert by Thelma Houston, a Grammywinning singer, during the cocktail hour. A short program that introduced the

managers of the shops on El Paseo was held prior to the dinner that was served by Wolfgang Puck Kitchen and Bar. A dessert was served with a gold gilded chocolate Oscar. Sandie Newton introduced actress Donna Mills and presented her with the Tiffany and Co. Legend Award in front of all the guests. Newton is a long-time friend of Donna Mills. The ceremony was held just outside the venue on a small stage area. Patti Gribow, President of PSWIFT spoke

Mary Jo Ginther, Warren Jones and Leanna Bonamici. Photo by Pat Krause to the guests and Fred Fern from The Shops on EL Paseo also spoke to the crowd. Guests were given table assignments with names like Best Actress, Best Director, Special Effects and other Oscar Awards names. Guests found it fun to try to look for their seats by the table names. Warren Jones, CEO of the Jones Group, created a special Oscar day party to remember with 3 huge TV screens so no one would miss a minute of the Oscar Awards on TV.

KESQ Local TV station 2 was on hand for the Red-Carpet Arrivals and Interviews with locals attending the event. Guests dressed in their best finery for the occasion would cheer and clap when their favorite actor or actress won an Oscar. A few guests clapped when political comments were made while the rest just stayed silent. This is a very festive event, and it brings a bit of Hollywood to the Valley. There was a after party so guests could talk about who won and

who lost in the Oscar Race. Palm Springs Women in Film and Television, PSWIFT, empower women in the entertainment industry and media. They provide educational programs, along with mentoring and networking to help members succeed in their chosen fields and careers. Part of the nights proceed will benefit the Coachella Valley Book Pals and Outreach Programs. Over 17 Shops on El Paseo helped sponsor this event.

Pathfinders 60th Anniversary

the school year as well. The Ranch builds selfconfidence with swimming and equestrian programs. It shows thousands of kids about Nature and life with educational programs. The cocktail hour was also a time to buy silent auction items and buy items from various vendors in the room. Local weatherman, Patrick Evans, held the duties as Emcee. Dinner consisted of a shrimp and crab salad with the main course of Lamb chops and jumbo shrimp with a chocolate banana mousse cake.Very delicious. The live auction was held after dinner was served and there were eight items of jewelry, dinners and vacations.

Entertainment was provided by American Idol Finalist Katharine McPhee. Her Grandmother, a past president of Pathfinders - Gloria Burch, asked McPhee if she was willing to perform at the gala. She said yes and even brought her pregnant sister along to perform. It was an amazing evening of songs when each woman performed solos for the crowd, both having great voices. It was especially nice when the women sang the song, “Sisters” together. The gala provided a runway that ran into the dinner guests, consequently they could see her up close and personal. This is not a usual concert for McPhee for such a small March 3, 2017

gathering hence it was a very special night for all. McPhee stars in several TV shows and has made a CD of songs her mother used to sing. She tours with her three piece band, and they sounded great on such a small stage. Many guests followed

her time on American Idol and her career because of her Mother and Grandmother that are involved with Pathfinders. There was an after party where guests could speak to McPhee and get a photo with her, a very gracious young lady.
