The Four Jacksons The Jacksons - Jackie, Jermaine, Tito and Marlon Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Four Jackson Brothers were so gracious to attend the Friday Dan McGrath show at the Hyatt Hotel. The Jacksons had several fans that came to witness the show and meet these famous brothers, as the radio show is open to the public. They were so charming, pleasant and nice. They posed for photos, talked to the fans and all in all it was a

great experience. The Jacksons were on Stage at Fantasy Casino on Saturday, Feb. 28th. and they spoke about their upcoming concert. Dan McGrath asked them what songs they were going to sing, and they named off so many of their famous hits. I Want You Back, ABC. I’ll Be There and one of my favorites, Never Can Say Goodbye, were just a few of

the songs they sang. They say they pay tribute to their brother Michael in all their performances. The four Jacksons are Jackie, Jermaine, Tito and Marlon. They said they have a great time on stage and want the audience to have a great time too. They like to take the audience down memory lane with their songs. They don’t just sing; they dance and really perform a fantastic show.

Neil Simon is Alive and Well

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Neil Simon, one of America’s most prolific and successful playwrights, has all but disappeared from the radar screens of patrons, and from the stages of professional and regional theatres across the country. Simon like other playwrights of his generation over the last fifteen years, have been caught in the crossfire of changing audience demographics. The Millennial Generation, roughly individuals 18 and 29 and those 30 to 40, are now the ages producers hope to woo into becoming regular theatre-goers. So far, that age demographic has

resisted the siren call. They’re too busy staring into their hands and the screens of their ubiquitous I-Phones. It’s a bit of a pity too, because they’re missing out on some pretty relevant and entertaining live theatre performances. The last time I checked “love” was still the key word that motivates all human behavior – and that would include the raging hormones, cultureresistant, younger set. The North Coast Repertory Theatre is doing its part in getting the message out to their subscribers and patrons in general, that Neil Simon is not only alive and doing well, but is still very relevant to audiences

of all ages. “Chapter Two”, Simon’s “autobiographical” play is based on events from his own life journey. The charming story set in New York City, revolves around the recently widowed George Schneider (warmly and winningly played by playhouse Artistic Director David Ellenstein and his cross-town neighbor, the recently divorced Jennie MacLaine (a lovely Jacquelyn Ritz). Neither of these bruised souls is eager to enter the dating wars that are being cooked up and choreographed by others who think they’re doing the Continues on Page 10

The Jacksons have been performing for so long that its just second nature to them; they have traveled all over the world to entertain. They want the audience to feel like dancing when they sing. McGrath thanked them for taking the time to come to his Friday Morning radio show. McGrath said it was a big thrill to have them there. McGrath has many

celebrities and local talents on his special Friday morning shows. Dan is a source of information as to what is going on in the Desert. McGrath then interviewed Nancy Tapick and Marilyn Benachowski about an upcoming concert. You can listen to Dan McGrath each morning on 103.1 radio.

d n e E k v e e nt Sum Up e W BOB NEWHART

Story and Photo by Pat Krause Another great talent and television icon graced the stage at the McCallum Theater on Feb. 24th. Bob Newhart is so well known for his television shows, The Bob Newhart Variety Show, The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart. He hosted the Tonight Show 87 times and has won Emmys. Grammys and Peabody award in his 50-plus years in show business. He started writing comedy sketches for the radio and that blossomed into a career as a standup comedian. His work led him into the recording world, and he produced eight comedy albums. One album reached the Top number 1 on the charts.

He started his show by telling the audience a few of his funny stories about his start in show business. He related stories about his series and how the show was a ground breaker for the times. He had to work to get a lot of the programs on the air because they touched on subjects that were basically taboo back then. He had the audience laughing almost from the start. His dry humor and deadpan expressions are well known by his fans as an innkeeper in the Newhart series. He has appeared in 14 feature films and has done a lot of voice over for The Rescuers animated films. He has been honored with a Star on the Hollywood

Walk of Fame and had been inducted into the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame. Bob has been a guest on numerous TV shows. He continues to do stand-up comedy all over the U.S. and beyond. He recently made a cameo appearance on Horrible Bosses and won his first Primetime Emmy award when he was a guest star on the Big-Bang Theory show. He performed to a sold-out crowd, and the audience was thrilled to be able to see him perform live on stage. Singer Linda Peterson started the show by singing some top favorites for the audience and then introducing Bob Newhart.

Story and Photo by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Women in Film and Television, PSWIFT, held its first annual Red Carpet Gala for the 2015 Academy Awards viewing party. The HOST for the event was the, Shops on El Paseo, Guests walked a red carpet into the reception area. Guests came in beautiful gowns and were dressed for the occasion. Some of the men also dressed in suits to be a part of the festivities. Guests enjoyed the Oscar nominated songs and the beautiful singing of songstress, Gennine Jackson. The guests liked the music so much that many got

out on the floor to dance to the up-tempo music. Celebrities Shari Belafonte and Tristan Rogers, Scorpio, walked the Red Carpet. It was an especially wonderful night as Shari Belafonte’s Dad, Harry Belafonte, was honored during the Oscars. What a thrill to be able to see your father honored on one of the biggest nights of television in front of millions of people. Over 100 guests attended the Oscar viewing on two large screens as they enjoyed a sit-down dinner. There were a lot of laughs when Neil Patrick Harris came out on stage in his undies. Lulu California Bistro offered a menu

that was inspired by the Oscar nominated films. The guests would clap when one of their favorites won the Oscar or give a sigh when one of their favorites didn’t win. Each guest was given a ballot to fill out with their pick for an Oscar and could check to see how well they had chosen. It was a fun night, and I am sure will be even bigger and better next year. The Shops on El Paseo donated raffle prizes for this special event. Pattie Daly Caruso interviewed guests on Television as they walked the Red Carpet.

Tips for Families to Get Healthier Together

By Desert Star Staff Want your kids to eat right and get moving more? With childhood obesity being a major problem in this country, this sentiment is top of mind for many parents and guardians. But you have more power than you may realize to steer them in the right direction, say experts. Parents have more potential than anybody else to influence their children’s behavior -including their eating habits -- according to a study by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. In fact, parents outrank sports celebrities as the people most children would most like to be, according to the survey. “You are the most influential role model in your child’s life,” says Kim Larson, registered dietitian nutritionist and Academy spokesperson. “Modeling healthy eating behaviors encourages children to adopt and choose healthy

behaviors that will benefit them for a lifetime.” Setting Realistic Goals: Small steps add up, and Larson recommends making healthy lifestyle changes that are realistic and easy to stick with for the long-haul. Try adopting healthy changes for the entire family, such as: • Make sure your kids know they are part of the team and that health and fitness are a family affair. • Encourage children to help plan meals -- from developing the menu to shopping to preparing and serving the meal. • Serve regular, balanced meals and snacks with a variety of nutrient-rich foods. • Eat breakfast daily. • Enjoy family dinner together each night or as often as possible. • At each meal, fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables. • Make at least half of the

grains you eat whole grains. • Get active. Incorporate physical activity where you can in your day, whether taking a family walk after dinner or hitting the gym. Remember, children and teens should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day, and adults should get two and a half hours per week. Focus on Overall Health, Not Weight Alone According to the experts, good nutrition, health, and fitness fun should be the focus of your family’s goals, not calorie counting, food restriction or working out. “You don’t want your kids to think that a healthy lifestyle is only about how much they weigh,” Larson says. “Concentrate on delicious nutrition and fun physical activities,” says Larson. Simple Mistakes can Result in Huge Financial Mistakes

This is a situation which happened to Robert De Niro, who owed $6.4 million to the IRS for his 2013 tax return, but it appears, he just learned of it. someone has not done what they were supposed to do. Otherwise, the lien wouldn’t be filed in the first place. Other things that cause this is poor accounting and business management. That too is a common problem, one that hardly seems surprising for celebrities who often have multiple handlers. As for the rest of us, missing out on notices is easier to happen than you might think. People move and may not receive errant mail. You should use consistent addresses with tax filings, and when you do move, file a Form 8822, Change of Address with the IRS. And remember, the longer IRS bills are outstanding, the more you owe. Moreover, by not responding

to notices promptly when they arrive, one can often lose out on certain procedural rights. Just about everything in the tax system has a timed response, such as 30 or 90 days. If you don’t receive a notice and miss out on a procedural advantage, you may not be able to make it up later.

the law will in the future have a requirement that proxies, the outer envelopes and the sign in sheet also be kept as election materials. Until then, associations might explore amending their bylaws to address this. Hoping this is helpful, Kelly

A board can conduct a meeting by telephone conference, under Civil Code 4090(b) and 4925, so long as homeowners are able to hear the open part of the board meeting. However, the board is not required to permit a director to “attend” by phone. Some associations do not have a speakerphone (please, do not use cell phones for this purpose), or have poor signal strength in the meeting location. Check your association bylaws- they probably also have specific requirements regarding notification to directors of upcoming meetings. Thanks for your question, Kelly

lien usually involves: (1) paying the tax, interest and penalties; or (2) posting a bond guaranteeing payment. Even then, the IRS may take 30 days. State or local government charges to file and release the lien are added in the amount you owe. Liens and seizures aren’t the same. The lien just makes sure the IRS eventually gets paid. A seizure involves forced collection so the IRS can sell property and get paid now. But occasionally, even the IRS makes a mistake. The other lesson about liens and levies is that no matter who you are, when bills get to this stage, not only do penalties and interest accrue, but also costs and expenses to get it fixed. By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Hello Mr. Richardson, I attended a Board meeting in which the opening of ballots was on the agenda. The president mentioned that a list with the names of all the people that voted would be created. I asked if I could have a copy of the list and he told me I could not have it, saying that the list was private information. The management company representative then proceeded to separate the ballots from the return envelopes and crumpled the return envelopes. Don’t I have a right to see the list? Should the return envelopes be thrown away? Sincerely, C.W., Goleta

Dear C.W.: I am assuming that your association’s election rules specifically allow the management company to act as Inspector of Elections, because otherwise the manager cannot serve that function, per Civil Code 5110(b). Under Civil Code 5125, only the ballots must be made available for inspection. However, several other documents can also be important to confirm the legitimacy of an association vote. The ballot check-in sheet is often an important document, recording who voted and making sure nobody votes twice. The outer envelopes could be checked as to the legitimacy of the signature on mailed in ballots. Yet, of all these different documents, only the ballots are required to be made available for inspection. Civil Code 5125 allows the Inspector of Elections to return ballots to the association one year after the election (which is the last day it could be challenged under Civil Code 5145). So, a member could conduct their own “recount” but would not be able to rule out double votes, invalid proxies, or forged ballot envelopes. Is this a hole in the law? Yes. Perhaps March 4, 2015

Dear Kelly, It has been my understanding that in order to avoid deliberate exclusion of a contrary opinion, all non-present members of a board must be notified of and have the chance to participate via phone. In other words, you cannot single out supporters and ignore nonsupporters. That notification must be documented in and become part of the minutes in which any vote thus taken is recorded. Those minutes must then be approved with the whole Board having a chance to vote. Thanks for writing to help us poor struggling members of HOA boards. A.S., Coronado Dear A.S.: Civil Code 4920 requires four days minimum advance notice to all members, for any non-emergency open board meeting. A meeting solely to be in closed session can be held on two days minimum notice.

Jewish Federation of The Desert Hosted AICF

By Madeline Zuckerman Rancho Mirage, California – Jewish Federation of the Desert, headquartered in Rancho Mirage, California, hosted their donors from this community at a first-time collaboration with New York-based America-Israel Cultural Foundation. Over 60 guests attended this elegant reception held at Tamarisk Country Club. For 75 years, the AmericaIsrael Cultural Foundation has played a leading role in the development of Israel’s arts and culture. From early support of nearly all of Israel’s largest institutions, to nourishing its finest artists, the name AICF has become synonymous with culture in Israel. The AmericaIsrael Cultural Foundation has been cultivating Israel’s future artistic leaders by identifying and nurturing Israel’s top emerging artists and furthering their education and careers through scholarships and grants. By encouraging Israeli artists and supporting institutions and programs, AICF makes a vital contribution to the cultural

foundation of Israel and strengthens her relationship with the United States. The organization’s success is evidenced by the increasing talent and depth of Israel culture, and the fact that Israeli culture is growing and thriving even in a difficult economy. “We are delighted to be hosting this special evening exclusively for our donors who make an annual commitment of $ 5,000.00 per household, and to be presenting the amazing talents of these two young and acclaimed Israeli musicians, Asi Matathias on violin and Victor Stanislavsky on piano,” stated CEO of Jewish Federation of the Desert, Bruce Landgarten. “We decided to host this smaller venue for these donors in order to judge the level of interest in this inaugural event. Judging from the terrific response received, Jewish Federation of the Desert is considering hosting a larger venue next season, so that all our donors will be able to experience the top-level talent of these performers. FCC Votes in Favor of Net Neutrality Rules

By Joe Rossignol FCCThe U.S. Federal Communications Commission on Thursday voted in favor by a 3-to-2 decision to enforce net neutrality rules that it claims will help protect freedom of

expression and innovation on the Internet, reports Ars Te c h n i c a . The FCC ruling classifies broadband service as a utility and prevents Internet providers f r o m blocking or throttling traffic or o f f e r i n g prioritized service through so-called Internet “fast lanes” for payment. “The Internet is the most powerful and pervasive platform on the planet. It is simply too important to be left without rules and without a referee on the field,” said FCC chairman Tom Wheeler. “Think about it.

The Internet has replaced the functions of the telephone and the post office. The Internet has redefined commerce, and as the outpouring from four million Americans has demonstrated, the Internet is the ultimate vehicle for free expression. The Internet is simply too important to allow broadband providers to be the ones making the rules.” The ruling will reclassify fixed and mobile broadband as a telecommunications service, and Internet providers will be regulated under Title II of the Communications Act. Internet service providers such as AT&T, Comcast and Verizon, which could sue the FCC in an attempt to reverse the new rules, heavily contested the decision. FCC officials believe that Type II reclassification will give them more legal authority to prevent net neutrality rules from being overturned.

While the new requirements are intended to ensure that the Internet remains fast, fair and open, the FCC did not follow through with lastmile unbundling that would have required Internet service providers to sell wholesale access to their networks. That decision would have allowed new competitors to enter local markets and sell broadband service using the existing infrastructure of larger providers such as Comcast and Time Warner Cable. “But the FCC decided not to impose unbundling,” adds Ars Technica. “As such, the vote does little to boost Internet service competition in cities or towns. But it’s an attempt to prevent incumbent ISPs from using their market dominance to harm online providers, including those who offer services that compete against the broadband

providers’ voice and video services.” The FCC’s order on Thursday could be faced with legal challenges and action from Congress, according to the report, suggesting that debate surrounding net neutrality is far from over. The new rules will go into effect 60 days after being published in the U.S. Federal Register, although the Office of Management and Budget will continue to manage enhancements to the transparency rule. Spock’s Ears: A pointy Trademark for Leonard Nimoy

By Derrik J. Lang AP Entertainment Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) Leonard Nimoy, who died Friday at age 83, likely had the most famous lobes in Hollywood. As the logical half-human, halfalien Mr. Spock in “Star Trek,” his pointy Vulcan appendages became a signature - and a nuisance - for the actor. Here’s a few facts about those iconic ears: AURAL HISTORY: “Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry was determined to have Nimoy don pointed ears as the Enterprise’s chief science officer. It was easier said than done. Before the first

episode was filmed, numerous designs of the ears’ shape and size were created before he settled on the perfect ears. EAR JOB: Roddenberry promised a reluctant Nimoy that if the pointy ears didn’t appeal to the viewing public after the initial episodes of “Trek” that he’d arrange for Spock to undergo “ear job” and they’d be removed. Instead, the character was a hit, and no such operation was needed. NOW HEAR THIS: The early ears were made of foam rubber and had to be glued on every morning and removed every night. The process usually

required Nimoy to be in the makeup chair for about 45 minutes each day. However, applying Spock’s slanted eyebrows typically took twice as long. LATER EARS: The process was eventually streamlined, and Spock’s ears were made of latex and cranked out on an assembly line. Over the years, the lobes and their molds turned up in various celebrity auctions. A pair is on display at the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. Will Smith’s ‘Focus’ on top with $18.7M

By KMIR Staff NEW YORK (AP) - Will Smith’s crime caper “Focus” debuted with $18.7 million, according to final figures Monday, while the previous North

American box office leader, “Fifty Shades of Grey,” sunk to fourth place. The somewhat weak debut of Warner Bros.’ R-rated “Focus,” co-starring Margot Robbie,

handed Smith another no. 1 box office opening but came in slightly below expectations. Winter weather across much of the Midwest and the South contributed to the film’s modest performance, which is Smith’s first movie since his 2013 flop, “After Earth.” The top 20 movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Sunday, followed by distribution studio, gross, number of theater locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Monday by Rentrak: 1. “Focus,” Warner Bros., $18,685,137, 3,323 locations, $5,623 average, $18,685,137, 1 week. 2. “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” 20th Century Fox, $11,880,077, 3,282 locations, $3,620 average, $85,825,824, 3 weeks. 3. “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water,” Paramount, $10,820,212, 3,467 locations, $3,121 average, $139,942,262, 4 weeks. 4. “Fifty Shades Of Grey,” Universal, $10,555,195, 3,383 locations, $3,120 average,

CBS Television Distribution didn’t discuss terms of the deal Monday. TV Guide has reported her current salary at $47 million a year - making her by far the highest-paid personality on television. Sheindlin is 72. The new deal also gives CBS first look at any projects by Sheindlin’s production company, which makes the new court show “Hot Bench.” “Judge Judy” is now in its

During the week ending Feb. 15, for example, “Judge Judy” was seen by an average of 10.1 million viewers each episode and the second most-popular show, “Dr. Phil,” had 4.9 million, the Nielsen company said. “We could not be more excited to continue our longtime relationship with Judy,” said Armando Nunez, president and CEO of CBS Global Distribution Group. “She is a true television icon, who entertains and inspires millions of fans each day.” Sheindlin was out of the country Monday. In a statement, she talked about being excited

A Playground to Nurture Baby’s Development

By Desert Star Staff From bath time to bedtime, there are a number of rituals parents participate in with their children that bring them closer together. These small acts provide a sense of security to little ones and serve as family bonding time. However, many parents do not realize these everyday moments can be more impactful than they seem. A recent JOHNSON’S Global Bath Time Report, found that 84 percent of parents say bath time is some of the best quality time they get with their child, yet many parents underestimate its power and benefits. In fact, more than half of parents (58 percent) say bath time is not extremely important to their child’s brain development. Yet, emerging and foundational science reveals multi-sensorial experiences such as bath time can be critical to baby’s happy, healthy development. During the first three years of life, 85 percent of baby’s brain is formed. Researchers have found that during the formative first years of life – every interaction –

every moment – is an opportunity to help shape baby’s developing brain. Bath time is more than cleansing; it’s a ritual that allows parents to unlock the full power of baby’s senses with opportunities to use smell, touch, sight and sound. Make bath time mean more with these fun ideas: • Don’t leave out the bubbles: Playing with bubbles can help babies develop handeye coordination and discover objects exist even when they can’t be seen. • Be a rock star for the night: Play music and sing songs during bath time, which can stimulate parts of the brain responsible for memory. Did you know that playing certain types of music stimulates parts of the brain responsible for visual imagery? • Give a language lesson in the tub: Talk back and forth with baby during this time. It can help with language development. • Link smell with happy memories: Pleasant smells, like those from a fragranced bath product, can create long lasting memories for baby when paired

with the loving interaction of a parent. Another big part of the afterbath routine is routine massage, and research shows that babies who receive routine touch and massage are more likely to make eye contact and have an overall positive expression. According to the JOHNSON’S Global Bath Time Report, only 19 percent of parents in the U.S. understand that baby massages are extremely important to their child’s brain development with nearly three in 10 (28 percent) saying it’s not at all important. Yet, this skin-on-skin contact through routine massage can lead to improved cognitive development and increased alertness and attentiveness for children. Remember to think of the bath time routine as more than a simple task – it fosters development and a sense of well-being for baby and parents, alike. to receive breast milk since the first hour of life, because in addition of preventing infectious and chronic diseases, it allows adequate motor and intellectual development. As part of the preparations of the 30th National Meeting “The Perinatal Origin of Adult Diseases”, to be held from 20 to 24 April, experts expressed concern about the fact that in Mexico, only 14 percent of children born breastfed. However, they recognized that this is because many women are incorporated into working life, so they recommended to provide more information about the importance of breastfeeding as a vital element

to protect the newborn from the diseases mentioned, as well as their physical and mental development. Doctors Coronado Zarco and Peralta reiterated that “it is essential to promote and encourage the mother´s feeding, from the first hours of life and the creation of places at the workplaces for a good extraction of the breast milk”. On her participation, teacher Rocío López Otiz, head of the Coordination of Education for Reproductive and Perinatal Health, detailed that to get a better breastfeeding is essential that the mother eats in a healthy way and above take at least two liters of water. Guthy Renker Will Close Palm Desert Office

By Angela Monroe PALM DESERT -- A wellknown company will be closing their doors in Palm Desert, and we’re told that means several dozen jobs will be moving to the Los Angeles area. The company is Guthy Renker, there is a business park on Cook Street in Palm Desert named after it. We’ve confirmed that they are closing that office, but it won’t happen right away; they say in the next two years. Guthy Renker is one of the world’s largest direct marketing companies. You probably recognize them through some of their infomercials, including Proactiv. According to their website, Guthy-Renker discovers, develops and sells multiple products to millions of customers across the world. They have international offices, and three in California: San Francisco, Santa Monica and one right here in Palm Desert.

This weekend, we received an anonymous tip that cofounder Greg Renker announced he would be closing the Palm Desert office and moving 100 jobs to Santa Monica. According to his bio on their website, Greg Renker lives in Indian Wells and is a well-known philanthropist and chairman of the Eisenhower Medical Center

in Rancho Mirage. Their Santa Monica spokesperson told us that within the next two years, employees from three separate offices in California will relocate to a single location in the Los Angeles area. They said the move is “designed to better position G-R for sustainable, long-term growth.”

By Lauri Neff Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) - Ming-Na Wen says her role as ace pilot and weapons expert Melinda May on “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” has convinced her children that she’s cool. “They love the show,” says Wen. She says that when her 9-year-old son, Cooper Dominic, saw the show about the Marvel Comics organization debut at San Diego Comic Con in 2013, “He was like, ‘Mom! I didn’t know you could fly a plane. That is so cool!’” Wen says her son and her 14-year-old daughter, Michaela, are especially amazed because her kick-butt TV persona is so very different from the mom they know - a “girlie girl” who loves wearing sundresses. “I laugh all the time and I’m always smiling and mommy’s the one that does the cooking and mommy’s a klutz,” she says.

Late this afternoon, Guthy Renker confirmed that this closure will affect 55 employees. The spokesperson said, “The move does not involve any involuntary force reductions and the employees will have the opportunity to relocate.” Source KMIR

The 51-year-old actress says her kids’ rave reviews are the best she could ask for. “For me, my career could be over right then and there and I’d be happy.” Wen says she’s also excited about the remainder of the show’s second season, which returns from its winter hiatus Tuesday at 9 p.m. on ABC. She says the series picks up right where it left off - focusing on S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Skye Johnson, who fans have learned is an Inhuman, Marvel’s name for a fictional race of superhumans that appears in various Marvel comic books. She says the introduction of the Inhumans brings a new element to the show that “fans have been dying for, to have some characters with superpowers.” Online: http://abc.go.com/ shows/marvels-agents-of-shield Follow Lauri Neff on Twitter at www.twitter.com/lneffist. By Desert Star Staff PALM DESERT, CA -New rules for single use plastic bags are coming soon to chain grocery and other large-scale stores in Palm Desert. Beginning on April 1, all fullline grocery and retail stores in Palm Desert with gross annual sales above $2 million, or that are larger than 10,000 square feet, are prohibited from providing customers with single-use plastic carryout bags. All other grocery and retail stores within the City will be prohibited from providing customers with single use plastic bags beginning on October 1.

Stores, other than nongrocery retail stores, will provide recyclable paper bags at a cost of 10 cents per bag. The 10-cent charge is intended to encourage the use of recyclable bags and offset the cost to store owners of paper bags, which are more expensive than single use plastic bags. To ease the transition, the City is giving away free reusable shopping bags as part of its Bring Your Own Bag (BYOB) campaign. In addition to a variety of fun, free BYOB merchandise, the campaign features more than a dozen appearances at stores and

local events where biodegradable reusable bags will be given away to the public. The changes are the result of an ordinance, approved by the Palm Desert City Council in July 2014, prohibiting the distribution of single-use plastic bags at grocery stores, retail stores, pharmacies, liquor stores, gas stations, and convenience stores. Because the City’s ordinance was approved prior to California’s disputed statewide ban on plastic bags, it supersedes the State law. Discarded single-use plastic bags pollute the environment

In the next month it’s important to see yourself as valuable. Perhaps this is difficult. If so make lists of all your gifts, abilities, talents, good deeds, thoughts, ideas and plans. A Melting Pot of Art and Biscotti on Cathedral City’s Perez Road

Photo by Colin Fisher Studios By Pam Price While Modernism Week drew over 50,000 attendees to the diverse events in and around Palm Springs for eleven days in February, only an adventurous few found their way to the art galleries off Perez Road in Cathedral City. If you were among those lured into this art arena by a sturdy five foot high red sculpture of three snazzy in front of Joannes Lucas (‘from Antwerp with love)’ gallery, which opened in the nick of time for Modernism Week or the aroma of the freshly baked biscotti at Frankie’s Old World Italian next to the bright-red schnauzer’s trio, you know you found a true insider spot.

This is the art zone of Perez Road Joannes Van Laer and Lucas Schelkens, coowners of this eclectic gallery, carries other works by William Sweetlove, a sculpture artist who has soft spot for dogs among other subjects. The eclectic art exhibited here is as humorous and clever as the red schnauzers greeting your arrival. Around the corner is Colin Fisher Studios, where Colin Fisher, originally from Chicago, has created a warm, welcoming gallery where you feel you could sit down to discuss his remarkably large collection over a cup of tea. He has been part of the Perez Road art scene for ten years, with an impressive list of

He has cultivated an admirable list of patrons worldwide, yet also proud of

Old Globe White Stage is Awash with Words and Warnings By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic One doesn’t have to be a biblical scholar to understand the opening passages of the Book of Genesis. . It informs the reader that in the beginning was the Word. From that moment on the power of words was upon everyone. Words have the power to influence, to inspire, to destroy, to do many things, both good and bad. The theatre is the medium that grabs and clutches to the heart the words written by others but spoken by actors becoming transformative in the process. The Old Globe production of “The Twenty-seventh Man” written by novelist and first-time playwright Nathan Englander, has the very good fortune to be directed by Old Globe Artistic Director Barry Edelstein. Edelstein’s easy manner belies the intellectual rigor he applies to all of the productions he directs. In 2012, he directed the world premiere production of Englander’s play at New York’s The Public Theatre. This time, however, he has crafted a production that has been reimagined to be staged in the Sheryl and Harvey White Stage – in the round. No walls. The six actors are out there all alone (theatrically ‘naked’, except for each other). Focus is the key element that grounds this splendid ensemble cast in powerful, poignant, and yes, at times, even humorous moments albeit, in a grim tale of artistic and

Yiddish intelligentsia repression in the Soviet Union during the 1950’s The story in short is set in a Soviet prison and revolves around the fate of twenty-six writers, the crème de la crème of Yiddish literature in Russia. Four actors become surrogates for the other twenty-two prisoners who are unseen and housed in other off-stage cells. Suddenly, a twenty-seventh prisoner Pinchas Pelovits (Eli Gelb) appears. He’s a teenager, unpublished and unknown. Baffled by his arrest, he and his cellmates wonder at what has brought them together and begin discussing what it means to be a writer in troubled times in a society run by the brutal dictator Josef Stalin. Leading the cast of players is Broadway and television star Hal Linden as Yevgeny Zunser, a sardonic leading writer of his time. Linden’s dialogue from time to time, requires chunks of Yiddish when speaking to the others. In real-life Linden, although raised in a Yiddish-speaking home, is a non-speaker, but like most good actors he has a working acquaintance with all languages. Linden’s performance would bring a smile to the face of humorist Leo Rosten, the author of the book: The Joys of Yiddish. Robert Dorfman as Vasily Korinsky, portrays a Yiddish poet who believes his fame and acquaintance with Stalin will be his ticket out of prison, telling the others that this incident has all been misunderstanding and

(from left) Robert Dorfman as Vasily Korinsky, Ron Orbach as Moishe Bretzky, Eli Gelb as Pinchas Pelovits, and Hal Linden as Yevgeny Zunser in the West Coast Premiere of Nathan Englander’s The Twenty-seventh Man, directed by Old Globe Artistic Director Barry Edelstein, Feb. 14 - March 22, 2015 at The Old Globe. Photo by Jim Cox. a huge mistake. Dorfman’s demand to see the Agent in Charge (James Shaklin) a bureaucratic functionary, fall on the deaf ears of their guard (Lowell Byers). When Shanklin and Dorfman finally do meet, Dorfman caves under the sly interrogation by Shanklin and meekly returns to his cell to commiserate with his fellow cellmates. Ron Orbach playing Moishe Bretzky, delivers several telling and passionate speeches concer ning their plight, reminding them that “…Hitler only wanted to kill our bodies. Stalin wants to destroy our souls.” Orbach is big man with a large on-stage presence. His

insightful speeches foretell the fate of all four prisoners. And when he speaks, the others listen. The subject matter of the play is based on a little known 1952 event referred to as “the night of the murdered poets”. Playwright Englander has taken some literary license for theatrical effect, but in so doing, he doesn’t diminish the impact and overall veracity of the actual events. The real power of the production lies in the wonderfully compelling ensemble performances and the deft direction of Edelstein. There are moments of aching poignancy and moments where universal

truths cannot be denied. It’s potent theatre at its best. In the technical department, the stark and forbidding prison cell set is creatively designed by Michael McGarty. Lighting Designer Russell H. Champa nicely compliments both McGarty’s design and the spoton period costumes of Katherine Roth. The ominous sound design by Darron L. West, adds the proper chilling effect and overall tone to the production. “The Twenty-seventh Man” is an impressive production now playing on the Sheryl and Harvey White stage at The Old Globe theatre complex. The drama runs through March 15, 2015. Don’t miss it.

right thing being matchmakers. With George, it’s his brother Leo (terrifically played Louis Lotorto), and with Jennie, it’s her Texasaccented, ditzy friend Faye (played by (Mhari Sandoval). Their journey of meeting, dating and forming a relationship is chock full of, now classic, Neil Simon dialogue and comedy situations. Simon is a master of the plot and sentence-ending zinger. He sends his comedic dialogue probes into the heart of the harried lives of middle-

class urban America, and like Rumplestiltskin spins those narrative threads into gold. Very few actors can direct themselves - the job is way too difficult and complicated just directing others – so it’s a wise choice by Actor Ellenstein to share co-directorship of this wonderfully entertaining play with Christopher Williams. What makes this Simon gem so winning is the splendid ensemble performers. Ritz as Jennie, is very fetching and

The on-stage chemistry between George and Jennie becomes just the icing on this snappy comedy cake. In the technical department, it’s difficult to find a better set designer and lighting designer

team that go together like ham and eggs, than Marty Burnett and Matt Novotny, respectively. Burnett’s set features two apartments side by side, precisely lighted, so no light bleeds into the other apartment, yet gives all the light needed to see and appreciate the playing areas, as well as the costumes of Alina Bokovikova. “Chapter Two” is a delightful production that performs at North Coast Repertory Theatre in Solana Beach, CA, through March 29, 2015. www.desertstarweekly.com

Beware of Fraudulent Scam Phone Calls

By Riverside County Sheriff’s This is another reminder to the public about ongoing fraudulent scam phone calls. Recently, various frauds have occurred in the Riverside County area where criminals contact victims by telephone to impersonate law enforcement officials or utility company officials. Court Scam: In the first type of scheme, the caller claims to be a member of law enforcement, or the court system. The victim is told he or she has a warrant for failing to appear for jury duty. The caller demands payment for the warrant via credit card information, or a Green Dot card. The suspect typically

remains on the phone with the victim while he or she travels to the store to obtain the Green Dot card. The suspect further instructs the victim not to tell anyone who they are talking with. After obtaining the serial numbers to the Green Dot cards, the money deposited to the card is immediately removed by the suspect. The caller is not connected with the Riverside Superior Court or the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. No Riverside County Court or Sheriff’s Department employee will ever contact the public and ask for financial information or payment in lieu of attending

court proceedings, or to make up for failure to appear for jury duty. Utility Scam: In the second scheme, t h e caller

claims from a service company.

to be utility, or provider-type The victim

is told their bill is overdue, or a meter needs to be replaced at the victim’s expense. The caller demands immediate payment for the overdue bill, or installation of a new meter. If payment is not received, the victim’s service will be shut off. The caller demands credit card information or a Green Dot card as described in the first scheme. The caller is not connected with any utility or service providers. Victims are encouraged to advise the caller they will call the utility company directly, and discontinue the call. The victim should then contact the utility company themselves through legitimate and verified numbers.

It should be noted there are several technologies and methods that allow callers to conceal what number they are calling from, or to give the appearance they are calling from the Sheriff’s Department, court, service provider or utility company. A n y o n e re c e i v i n g a telephone call from a person claiming to be a Riverside County Court or Sheriff’s Department employee or other law enforcement official seeking money should refuse the demand and report the incident to your local Sheriff Station or Police Department. Citizens may also submit an anonymous tip using the Sheriff’s CrimeTips online form.

NorCal Homicide Suspects Lead Police on Chase By KMIR Staff COACHELLA VALLEY -There are new details about a high speed chase that stretched from the Coachella Valley to Arizona, with the suspects shooting at passing drivers and police. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department confirmed their deputies shot and killed one of the suspects near Quartzsite, Arizona. The pursuit began in the area of Dillon Road Saturday afternoon. Police were looking for two murder suspects who were possibly headed to Sonoma County in Arizona.

The suspects then led police on a pursuit that stretched for more than 100 miles on Interstate 10, and lasted more than an hour. We also heard that the suspect vehicle reached speeds of 130 miles per hour. Police say the suspects were firing at other vehicles on Interstate 10, and when a police officer set up spike strips by the Arizona border the suspects also allegedly shot at him. The officer wasn’t hurt, and no drivers reported injuries. The spike strips did cause the vehicle to lose control, and then the two suspects took off running into the desert.

Officers say one of the suspect brandished a gun, and that was when the deputy shot the suspect. They died at the scene. That suspect hasn’t been identified. Police say Victor Silva of Greenbrae, California was taken to jail and is facing several felonies. He is now waiting for extradition for a murder charge here in California. Officers are encouraging any drivers that may have been shot at on the Interstate, or are a witness to the crime to contact the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. Source KMIR

28 Hurt When California Train Crashes into Truck on Tracks By Christopher Weber And Tami Abdollah Associated Press OXNARD, Calif. (AP) - A commuter train slammed into a truck abandoned on the tracks early Tuesday, sending three rail cars tumbling onto their sides and injuring 28 people in the fiery crash in California. The accident occurred around 5:45 a.m. on February 24, about 65 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Four people, including the train engineer, had critical injuries. The truck driver was found several miles away, and authorities were questioning him about why the vehicle was left on the tracks. Glenn Frisbie was driving to work and sitting at an intersection about a block away when the train struck the truck. “I saw a bright flash, a big fireball and flames, flames going pretty high,” he said. Little was left of the truck except scorched and mangled wreckage, with some debris found in a nearby intersection and some close to the tracks. “When the crews arrived on scene, it was in flames, the vehicle, and it was pretty much cut in half,” Oxnard Fire Battalion

14

DesertSTAR

Chief Sergio Martinez said. The Metrolink train carrying 48 passengers and three crew members was heading from Ventura County to Los Angeles. The injured people were taken to several hospitals. The locomotive, which was pushing the train from the back, was upright. The stretch of track is straight and that allowed the conductor to see the truck and begin braking, Martinez said. The train typically would be accelerating out of the Oxnard station at about 55 mph, Metrolink spokesman Scott Johnson said. With braking, he estimated it would have hit the truck at between 40 mph and 55 mph. The crossing had arm gates, signal lights and a center median, said Francisco Castillo, a spokesman for Union Pacific Railroad, which owns the tracks. Johnson said initial reports from the scene indicated the arms and lights were working. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Railroad Administration were sending investigators to the scene of the crash. None of the rail cars crumpled, and that likely explains why there weren’t more serious

injuries. That’s the aim of “collision energy management technology,” which disperses energy from the impact, instead of allowing it to concentrate inside the cars, Johnson said. Metrolink invested heavily in such technology following other major crashes on its lines over the past decade. Twenty-five people were killed on Sept. 12, 2008, when a Metrolink commuter train struck a Union Pacific freight train headon in the San Fernando Valley community of Chatsworth. More than 100 people were hurt in one of the worst railroad accidents in U.S. history. Federal investigators later concluded that the Metrolink engineer had been texting moments before the crash and ran a red light. In 2005, 11 people were killed and about 180 were injured when a man who later claimed he was suicidal parked his SUV on tracks in suburban Glendale and fled before an oncoming Metrolink train struck it and derailed, hitting a second Metrolink train. In 2002, two people were killed and 270 injured when a Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train ran a red signal light March 4, 2015

and crashed into a stopped Metrolink train in the Orange County community of Placentia. Of the injured, 162 were sent to hospitals. Associated Press writers John Antczak, Justin Pritchard

and Sue Manning contributed from Los Angeles. Amy Taxin contributed from Tustin, California, and Alina Hartounian contributed from Phoenix. Source KMIR

How to Take Control of Diabetic Foot Ulcers By Desert Star Staff If you have diabetes, it is important to take care of your feet. Did you know that diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs), open sores or wounds that form on the bottom of the foot, may be a costly problem for people who have diabetes? About 25 percent of all people with diabetes will get DFUs in their lifetime, according to the American Podiatric Medical Association. Additionally, 14 to 24 percent will lose a leg, foot or toe. DFUs may take weeks or even months to heal. Experts at the National Institutes of Health say that finding and caring for DFUs early on can lower your chances of losing a limb by up to 85 percent. Not only can DFUs be harmful to a person’s health, but they often affect his or her daily life. These sores form due to many reasons including: • Having diabetes for more than 10 years • Poor blood flow • Lack of feeling in the foot

• Friction or pressure There is a research study that could help people with DFUs get back on their feet. A Phase 3 study called STRIDE will seek to evaluate a topical study gel, DSC127, or placebo in treating non-healing foot ulcers in people with diabetes when applied once a day for up to four weeks. Even with current treatments, foot sores can be slow to heal. More than 100 locations are involved in the STRIDE study. If you have diabetes, are at least 18 years old and have had a foot sore for one month to one year, you may be able to enroll. To learn more or find a local research center in your area, go to www.gotfootsores.com. Research study participants will be seen by a doctor every week and will be given a topical study gel or placebo and lab services at no cost. Don’t let foot ulcers that won’t heal stop you from doing the things you want and need to do every day. (StatePoint)

CV Grant Helps Teen Girls Receive Mentoring

By Cara Van Dijk Palm Desert, Calif., – The Ophelia Project has already supported the academic development and personal growth of 2,850 local teenage girls, but now thanks to a $25,000 Coachella Valley Spotlight grant, many more young women will receive beneficial mentoring through the program. The Ophelia Project received the grant from the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation. “We currently provide a comprehensive enrichment curriculum for teen girls in 11 valley schools, but our plans are to serve all 27 schools in the area that are asking us to provide the programming at their sites,” said Susan Francis, Chief Executive Officer of the Ophelia Project. “This gift from the Berger Foundation will help us reach more of our valley’s teen girls with this very unique mentoring program that has resulted in a 100 percent senior graduation rate of Ophelia participants.” In 1998, the Ophelia Project was launched in the Coachella Valley serving five girls with three volunteer mentors in one school. Now, in its 17th year, the Ophelia Project serves 550 girls annually, with 150 trained and certified mentors in all threevalley school districts. Last May,

the Coachella Valley Ophelia Project was asked to become the national headquarters of the Ophelia Project by the original founders who are based in Erie, Penn. “It’s exciting to see how far the Ophelia Project has come,” said Catharine Reed, Senior Program Officer for the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation. Unlike most mentoring programs, the Ophelia Project works with the school districts to bring the program to students, 8th-12th grades, during regular school hours. The activities are designed to increase girls’ GPAs, build self-esteem, improve academic achievement, and

provide college and career readiness and much more. Recently, the Ophelia Project expanded its education navigation to also help young women attain their associate degrees. “The Ophelia Project has really empowered me to be much more confident and to believe in myself,” said Mollie Buchanan, 17, a graduating senior at Shadow Hills High School in Indio. “I know I can achieve anything I work for. Thanks to my mentors and their encouragement, I now look forward to college and a successful future!” “We have seen the difference

mentors make in the lives of young people, and we are happy to share the story of the Ophelia Project, which is now beginning a new chapter,” said Mike Stutz, General Manager of Gulf California Broadcast Company, which owns and operates CBS Local 2. Along with the grant funds, the Ophelia Project was featured on CBS Local 2’s “Eye on the Desert,” in public service announcements and on the www.cbslocal2.com website throughout the month of February. A Healthy Bedtime Routine is Important for Kids

By Desert Star Staff Establishing a consistent bedtime routine is a prelude to a great night’s sleep, which is critical for young bodies and brains. Here are some great ways to create healthy bedtime habits for you and your family. Screen-Free Down Time: Our electronic devices are an integral part of our lives. Even young children may spend a portion of time each day using tablets, mobile phones and e-readers. However, the light emitted from these devices can hinder sleep, so make sure you incorporate some screen-free down time before bed. Great substitutes for these electronics are good oldfashioned books, storytelling time, board games and puzzles. Brush Up: February is Children’s Dental Health Month, an excellent opportunity for both kids and parents to learn more about preventive dental care and the importance of a healthy oral care routine. It’s also a good time to give back and help other children in the community who may not have access to dental care. A free downloadable coloring book called “Brushing Fun,” is available to help introduce kids to healthy habits. Each free download will trigger a donation of 10 tubes of Tom’s

Palm Desert Aztecs to Contend for Another CIF Title

MURRIETA, CA – It has been a long nine months for Andrew Bash, Travis Moniot and a Palm Desert High School baseball team that hopes a successful 2015 will erase last year’s heartbreaking loss in the CIF championship game at Dodger Stadium. After losing in the CIF division title a year ago, a successful season for Palm Desert means winning it all. With multiple collegiate level players in the lineup this spring, the Aztecs (0-0 DVL, 1-1 overall) are in prime position to compete for the championship again. “We have six returning players from last year’s team and their experience is really paying off for us, and they are good leaders,” Aztecs head coach Darol Salazar said. “If (Moniot and Bash) just have seasons close to what they had last year were going to be in a good position at the end of the year.” Including the University of Oregon-bound Moniot (.337 AVG., 33 R, 34 H, 11 SBs), the Desert Valley League MVP, Cal Baptist University-bound Bash (.430 AVG., 5 HRs, 34 RBIs) and first team, all-DVL Gil Sauceda (.343 AVG., 35 H, 30 RBIs) from 2014’s stacked roster, the Aztecs received an off-season gift in the

from the La Quinta Blackhawks. Throwing over 55 innings, Jeremiah Estrada led the Blackhawks with six wins, a 1.27 ERA, two complete games and 77 strikeouts. As a freshman, Estrada turned into the front man of La Quinta’s pitching staff and earned second team all-DVL. Now, the UCLA commit will be slinging fastballs on Cook Street for rival Palm Desert – a huge pickup for the already-loaded Aztecs. With enough talent to compete against some colleges, the Aztecs have been rightfully ranked preseason No. 1 in Division III. Even with the blessing of a great roster, the Palm Desert head coach knows it is a long season and anything can happen. “Like I tell the kids,” Coach Salazar said. “We have so much success in the past, in league and in CIF, you have a target on your back – and we do, we get everybody’s A-game. We don’t just think were going to cruise through (the season), we’re going to be challenged, definitely.” To be the best you have to beat the best and Palm Desert is not scared to schedule tough competition. On Saturday, the Aztecs opened the season with a doubleheader one of the best
