The Oscar Awards Afterthoughts on Sundays telecast of The Oscars which was hosted by Ellen DeGeneres By Theda Kleinhans Reichman The Sunday Oscar telecast was a class act in every way. Host Ellen DeGeneres joked with the star-studded audience but never made anyone feel ill at ease, which isn’t always the case. (Remember Seth MacFarlane from “Family Guy?”) She also knew when to get out of the way, although the pizza patter went on a slice too long.
The format was wellbalanced and structured. There were brief film segments for each film category, including animation, which gave the viewer a sense of the nominated film, whether or not they had seen it in a theater. The writers also cut out a lot of the inane banter between presenters that got in the way and often slowed down the momentum in past years.
And the actors also were better prepared with clever or heartwarming acceptance speeches worthy of the occasion. Most speeches were touching, especially those given by Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto and Lupita Nyong’o while Cate Blanchette spoke out eloquently for films focusing on interesting women like those in contention for the Best Actress
“The 39 Steps”
Awards this year. And some speeches were poetic like the playful acceptance given by husband and wife song writers Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, which were presented in rhyme. Another plus was the music. It was great to hear Pink sing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” in honor of the 75th anniversary of the classic movie “The
Wizard of Oz” and all of Judy Garland’s children were there in the audience to celebrate the occasion. Bette Midler sang “The Wind Beneath My Wings” in tribute to all the performers and film connected individuals who are no longer with us like Philip Seymour Hoffman, Sid Caesar, James Gandolfini, Peter O’Toole, Continues on Page 2
A Brilliant And Inventive Comedy At Annenberg Theatre
By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic A Special for The Desert Star Weekly The terrific comedy production “The 39 Steps”, brilliantly directed by Ken Parks; produced and presented by Coyote StageWorks, of Palm Springs, and The Norris Theatre of Palos Verdes, CA, is often referred to as hilarious, zany, and an a inspired collision of comedy and parody at its finest. Newspaper ads often bill
the show as “Hitchcock meets Monty Python” wherever it plays, and rightly so. The stage production owes it genesis to the 1935 British spy-thriller movie directed by Alfred Hitchcock that starred Robert Donat as Richard Hannay and Madeleine Carroll as Pamela. When the current stage version of “The 39 Steps”, written by Patrick Barlow, opened on Broadway in 2005 following its West End run, no
one could have foreseen its popularity and acceptance as a blockbuster parody/spoof. The Broadway show ran for 771 performances. I saw it in 2009 and was blown away by the sheer audacity and brilliance of its high concept story and play script. The production, then as now, features just four actors: One plays the lead role Continues on Page 10

Afterthoughts on the Oscar Awards Continued from Page 1 Roger Ebert, Shirley Temple and countless others who helped make memorable motion pictures. And last, but not least Idina Menzel (Broadway’s “Wicked”) belted out the Oscar-winning song “Let It Go” from Disney’s Oscar winning animated film “Frozen” so it was a grand night for singing. In the major categories, Oscars were presented to the following: Best Picture: “12 Years a Slave” Director: Alfonso Cuaron, “Gravity” Actor: Matthew McConaughey, “Dallas Buyers Club” Supporting Actor: Jared Leto, “Dallas Buyers Club” Actress: Cate Blanchette, “Blue Jasmine” Supporting Actress: Lupita Nyong’o, “12 Years a Slave” Original Screenplay: Spike Jonze, “Her” Adapted Screenplay: John Ridley,”12 Years a Slave” Foreign-Language Film: “The Great Beauty” Animated Feature: “Frozen” Original Song: “Let It Go” from “Frozen” Original Score: Stephen Price, “Gravity”

The
Armed Services YMCA’s Family Assistance Program provides lodging, food and gas money, so family members can be bedside without the additional financial stress. The Armed Services YMCA Twentynine Palms was established in 1992 with a mission to assist and serve active duty military members and their families stationed at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms. The YMCA
is located on base with two fulltime employees, 12 part-time staff and nearly 700 active duty and civilian volunteers. “Supporting the YMCA’s Family Assistance Program contributes to the overall mission of the Y and the success of its 27 other programs and services for military families at our local base,” said Catharine Reed, Senior Program Officer for the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation. Reed is among 12
community members on the CBS Local 2 Advisory Board, which selected the 2014 Coachella Valley Spotlight recipients from about 70 applicants. “Supporting military families is one way we can honor service men and women who sacrifice for the benefit of our country,” said Mike Stutz, General Manager of Gulf California Broadcast Company, which owns and operates CBS Local 2.

Located in the Dinah Shore Gallery, all the puzzlers have instructions in both English and Spanish. Other new exhibits include the “Harmonograph,” at which visitors manipulate a pendulum to create visual geometric images, and the “Cup Copter,” an exhibit
with a blower, that illustrates how different blade designs, created by cutting and adapting paper cups, can change the flying course of the cup. The “Harmonograph” is located in the Dinah Shore Gallery, and the” Cup Copter” is in the Main Gallery. All the new exhibits are geared toward increasing creative and critical thinking through fun and engaging activities. crouching, or rolling on the ground to expose their bellies. 2. Incomplete Potty Training. A dog who sometimes urinates in the house might just not be clear on the rules of when and where to go potty, especially if his owner(s) has been inconsistent with training him, or he was severely punished or frightened when he made an accident in the house. 3. Urine Marking. This is about claiming turf, and not a bladder control issue. Dogs, even female dogs, will lift their legs when scent marking. One difference to note: scent marking involves a smaller amount of urine, and the urine is generally left on vertical objects, not flat open surfaces. 4. Juvenile Destruction. This problem of chewing and digging when no one’s watching is sometimes the result of a young, energetic, excited dog. 5. Boredom. A bored dog, especially a dog of high intelligence like a Jack Russell terrier or Australian Shepherd, can become destructive out of boredom. Animal behaviorists believe dogs who suffer separation anxiety when left alone have experienced the loss of an important person or group at some point in their lives. www.desertstarweekly.com

‘Non-Stop’ For Non-Stop Action and Thrills
By Theda Kleinhans Reichman After seeing Liam Neeson in the action-packed thriller “NonStop” my husband quipped:”This probably won’t be a hit as an inflight movie.” How true, especially if a passenger is afraid of flying like Liam Neeson’s character Bill Marks that, it turns out, is the U.S. Air Marshall assigned to the fictional British Aqualantic Airline flight heading to Amsterdam. His seat mate, Julianne Moore, noticing his discomfort is told he doesn’t enjoy flying, particularly the take-off. The film begins with Neeson downing a Scotch from a paper cup in his parked car. He wants to back out of this particular flight, but it’s too late now. As he reluctantly boards the plane, he takes the time to comfort a little girl who is afraid of flying alone. He gives her some fatherly advice that seems to ease her mind as she is led to her seat by a lovely flight attendant (Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary on TV’s mega-hit “Downton Abbey.”) The other attendant is Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o from “12 Years a Slave.” Tension mounts when Neeson receives a threatening text on his secure network informing him that unless he arranges to have $150 million wired to a safe account someone on the flight will die every 20 minutes. From here on the film turns into a real nail bitter as, we, along with Marshall Marks, try to figure out who is trying
to hijack the plane for mega bucks. The screenwriters John W. Richardson, Chris Roach and Ryan Engle, along with director Jaume Collet-Serra, keep us in suspense and on the edge of our seats throughout, but along with the tension that continually mounts, there are plenty of laughs. Neeson, who earned an Oscar nomination for his excellent work in “Schindler’s List,” shows us that even at age 61, he can
also be comfortable and very convincing as an action hero, a role he seems to relish. It all began when he made “Taken” for $25 million and the film went on to gross $250 million, opening up a whole new range of possibilities and action roles for the gifted stage and screen star. In “Non-Stop,” Neeson’s latest action flick, he plays a man who is world-weary and depressed, but still able of doing his job against almost impossible
odds. And for us, the audience, we find ourselves checking out every passenger, along with Marks, trying to figure out exactly who might be capable of such despicable acts of violence on what just may be a doomed flight for all concerned. The writers toss us plenty of red herrings to keep us on our toes and on the edge of our seats throughout this fast-paced action-packed thriller. The excitement is so intense that we, like Neeson at the start, may
want to go out for a Scotch on the rocks ourselves. While you wouldn’t want to be a passenger on this flight, “Non-Stop” proves to be a fun, but the frenzied ride for the audience. “Non-Stop,” from Universal, is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action and violence, some language and drug reference.

By Desert Star Staff Palm Desert, CA.-The College of the Desert Theatre Arts department presents the 1979 Pulitzer Prize winning masterpiece Buried Child by Sam Shepard, March 14th – 23rd in the Pollock Theatre. This powerful and brilliant play probe deep into the disintegration of the American Dream. The setting is a squalid farm home occupied by a family filled with suppressed violence and an unease born of deep-seated unhappiness. The characters are a ranting alcoholic grandfather; a
sanctimonious grandmother that goes on drinking bouts with the local minister; and their sons, Tilden, an All-American footballer now a hulking shell of himself; and Bradley, who has lost one leg to a chain saw. Into their midst comes Vince, a grandson none of them recognize or remember, and his girlfriend, Shelly, who cannot comprehend the madness to which she is suddenly introduced. The family harbors a dark secret as years earlier the grandfather, Dodge, buried an unwanted newborn baby in an undisclosed spot, creating a
cloud of guilt, which is dispelled only when Tilden unearths the child’s mummified remains and carries it upstairs to his mother. His act purges the family, at last, of its infamy and suggests the perhaps slim possibility of a new beginning. The New York Post hails, “Shepard is one of the most prolific of our playwrights, and, for that matter, certainly one of the most brilliant.” New York Magazine calls the play “…wildly poetic, full of stage images and utterances replete with insidious suggestiveness.”
question: How did Peter Pan become The Boy Who Never Grew Up? By Dan Marinelli LA MIRADA, CA – In the waning seconds of the CIF-SS Division 3AA quarterfinals at La Mirada High School last Tuesday, Aztecs senior guards Eric Oetting and Daniel McCown held an emotional embrace, knowing they had just finished playing their final high school basketball game. was no different. A mixture of about 500 rowdy La Mirada High School Fans and students appeared to rattle Palm Desert from the opening tip, allowing the Matadores to seize an eight-point first-quarter lead. Matadores center Dezmon Murphy and guard Vittorio Reynoso-Avila each scored six points to help La Mirada get in front, 12-6, at the end of the first quarter. La Mirada may have had the backing of a large home crowd, but Palm Desert also tried their best to spark their team by bringing 150-plus of their own fans known as the Aztec Army – and they were loud, too. The support from Aztec Army likely contributed to the never-saydie attitude that kept the team clawing back whenever La Mirada came close to grabbing the reigns. On the defensive end, Murphy was a wall in the middle, contesting any Aztecs player that drove to the hoop. Numerous first-half blocks from Murphy and the other La Mirada big man, Kendall Lauderdale (finished with 12 points), helped prevent multiple would-be Aztecs’ points, that kept the lead with the Matadores throughout

a larger, more athletic team in the Matadores (10-2 in Suburban League, 21-9 Overall). Up until this game, the Aztecs had won 13-straight games, and were not going to let a size deficiency deter them from trying their best at advancing, and winning a season-high 14 straight game. In recent games, despite the quality of the team they were matched up against, the Aztecs had developed a bad habit of letting their opponent get out to the early lead – the quarterfinal

the first half. With two McCown threepointers, and a basket coming from each of the other starters, the Aztecs closed out the second quarter on a 7-2 run, and only trailed La Mirada 25-22 at halftime. Within the first minute of the second half, a McCown three tied the game at 25, bringing the Aztecs the closest they had been since the game was tied at zero. In addition to Oetting’s threepointers, McCown knocked down another three as the third quarter expired, bringing the Aztecs to within three, 42-39. The lone Aztecs forward/ center, Anthony Murdica, could only guard half of the Matadores superior front court, giving Lauderdale open shots the entire second half. Lauderdale along with Reynoso-Avila (finished with 20 points), scored nine and 10 points, respectively, in the second half, and also kept La Mirada a few points ahead until the final fifty seconds – when the game got exciting. After a McCown free throw cut the Matadores lead to 52-45, the Aztecs became desperate and decided to full-court press. Fortunately, for the Aztecs, the Matadores were unprepared for
the tenacious press and threw the ball away twice. Oetting sank a layup after the first Aztecs steal, and McCown split two lengthy defenders and drained a three following the second steal. Palm Desert managed to miraculously cut the lead to two points, 52-50, but with 10.5 second remaining, trailing by two would be the closest the Aztecs would come to win. Bryson Laverde was sent to the free-throw line and made two clutch free throws to put the Matadores up for good. La Mirada won the quarterfinal 54-50. In their final game as Aztecs, McCown and Oetting finished with 18 and 17 points, respectively. The junior, Murdica – who will likely be the face of the team in 2014-2015 – finished with just five points for Palm Desert. Regardless of the loss, the Aztecs still had a very successful season. Finishing with an overall record of 21-6, the Aztecs remained undefeated throughout DVL play, won their first DVL title since the 2005-2006 season, recorded 13 consecutive wins and made it past the secondround – where they faltered last year. www.desertstarweekly.com
A Powerhouse Of Tolerance
O U R MISSION:
Joseph T. Beaver acceptance speech upon being presented the Congressional Gold Medal at the Tolerance Education Center in Rancho Mirage presented by Congressman Raul Ruiz, M.D. (right) (Photo by Allen L. Lechtman)
our mission:
By Pam Price When it comes to involving the community on all levels, the Tolerance Education Center ( TEC) in Rancho Mirage makes miracles happen. Their diverse outreach program covers aspects of tolerance education from bullying to address historical issues during Black History Month. Melisse Banwer and Talia Hawley of TEC approach every month of the year creatively with themes exploring “the roots of hatred.” Black History Month in February was a prime example of their far-reaching events. Their program on Feb. 24th was dedicated to Congressional Gold Medal Honoree Joseph T. Beaver, a Palm Springs resident who, after 71 years after having served in the US Marine Corp during WWII was recognized for his service to his country. This long-delayed Gold Medal was presented to him by Congressman Raul Ruiz, 36th District in an emotional ceremony that brought tears to several people in the audience, including myself. The Medal reads “ For Outstanding Perseverance and Courage that Inspired Social Change in the Marine Corps,” noting on the opposite side Monteford Point Marines, 1942-1949. Every seat in TEC’s theatre was occupied as Mr. Beaver spoke about the being part of the first African-American enlisted men serving in the Marine Corps training at the Montford Point Camp in North Carolina. He shared his wartime experiences with friends and family, sharing his memoirs during an era when segregation impacted the military. Confronting tolerance issues on all levels is TEC’s mission. Whether it is their educational lectures presented to students
throughout Riverside County, free Weekly Movies curated with a theme on tolerance or their entertaining cabaret shows, TEC has become a multi dimensional resource in Coachella Valley. Their library has books from the Diary of Ann Frank to historical recollections of the Armenian genocide. A uniform from a concentration camp donated by a Holocaust survivor is preserved and exhibited. The impact on visitors is profound. “ The first time I visited TEC, I was struck by the vast collection of historical information housed here, in a space of 4,000 sq. feet. The founders of TEC had a vision; they are to be commended for the pragmatic way they have chosen to promote the enduring importance of tolerance,” said Anthony Grant, a visitor from Tel Aviv. And their calendar is nonstop. Women’s History Month has four films scheduled, March 5, Zero Dark Thirty, March 12 Gravity, March 19 Nuts and March 16, Saving Mr. Banks. Tolerance issues are explored in each film. On the lighter side, Shelley Fisher , the Hebrew Hillbilly performs at TEC on Thursday, March 13 at 7 pm with her Solo Musical Comedy Play with a “good ole southern reception” immediately following her performance. Music and the Holocaust with Brian Nedvin, DMA a program with a lecture, image and song takes place on Sunday, April 13th at 3 P.M. The songs are sung in Yiddish, Hebrew German and English. The Tolerance Education Center 35147 Landy Lane in Rancho Mirage is taking reservations for both events. For information (760) 328-8252 www. ToleranceEducationCenter.org.

Inventive Comedy “The 39 Steps” Continued from Page 1 of Richard Hanny (the Robert Donat role) and one female actor plays the Madeleine Carroll part, plus two additional female roles. The other two male actors portray the remaining 100 plus characters in a tour de force of split-second timing, and jaw dropping performances worthy of Chaplin and Keaton in their heyday. It boggles the mind to see their efforts carried off so cleverly and so inventively. It’s a production that is blessed with a talented and highly creative ensemble cast that continually amazes the audience with one hilarious scene after another; all the while being technically faithful to the movie and its core story. So then, who are these fabulous actors who are breathing such life into their roles on the stage of the Annenberg Theatre, in Palm Springs? Let’s start with Jeffery Cannata as Hannay, the handsome, dashing, visitor from Canada who is wrongly accused of murder and is on the run from Scotland Yard. He must avoid capture and find a master spy somewhere in Scotland who is planning to escape to Germany with stolen plans for a secret weapon. Sounds pretty thin plot-wise but in Cannata’s talented hands it’s all just a piece of cake. Can he and will he save the day, foil the spies and win the girl? You bet he will, and he does it with style, wry wit, and grace. Lovely Karen Jean Olds plays Annabella a Marlene
Dietrich-like German woman in the opening scenes, then Margaret, a Scottish lady who befriends Hannay as he escapes his German pursuers in the Highlands, and finally as Pamela, (the Madeleine Carroll role) the young woman handcuffed to Hannay for half of the play. Olds is the possessor of wonderful comedy timing skills and a displays a specialty for farce. As Pamela, she also steals Hannay’s heart in the bargain, lucky fellow. Louis Lotorto as Clown # One, is a veritable gold mine of accents and characterizations. English, Scottish, German. Men and women, you name it, he plays them all and he does it with lightning-like speed just as he does with his costume changes, sometime playing two different characters in the same scene. Don’t ask how he does it. Just enjoy what can only be appreciated by seeing it. It’s not accomplished with smoke and mirrors. It’s just sheer talent that gets the job done. Kenny Landmon as Clown # Two, is an actor with the comedy and farce skills of Lotorto, with the exception that he is a head taller, but just as accomplished in the accent department, and he too plays both men and women roles. The on-stage energy generated by Landmon and Lotorto is enough to light the entire Coachella Valley. I had the opportunity to chat
Kenny Landmon, Louis Lotorto and Jeffrey Cannata (Photo by Ed Krieger) with the cast following the opening night performance. Both Lotorto and Landmon both confessed to drinking a large bottle of Gatorade during the intermission at each performance as a way of restoring the fluids and energy that drains them in Act One and prepares them for the madcap antics of Act Two. B e h i n d e v e r y g re a t production is a director. They are individuals with the talent, skill, experience, and a personal vision of how best to bring the many disparate theatrical elements together that every
show requires. It’s magic time when the actors are in synch with the director, and when that happens audiences are treated to a memorable evening in the theatre. “The 39 Steps” is fortunate to have Ken Parks helming this splendid production. The evening is chock-full of his clever and inspired directorial touches. And the audience roars its approval with howls of laughter throughout giving the cast a much deserved, standing ovation at the curtain call. In the technical department the creative team led by Parks, benefits from the Set Design of James W. Gruessing, Jr; Phil Murphy’s skillful lighting plot; the clever sound design of Chris
Warren Murry; Wardrobe Mistress Chaneen McCurdy, and her two dressers: DeLane Marianowits and Shari White (one can only imagine the world-wind of activity that takes place backstage at every performance). And finally, Stage Manager Chris Warren Murry who keeps everything in order, and makes sure that no one misses an entrance amid the flurry of backstage activity. It’s an impressive effort. Coyote StageWorks, has been voted Best Live Theatre in the Coachella Valley by Desert Magazine two years running. “The 39 Steps” runs at the Annenberg Theatre through March 9th. Don’t Miss It. Call the box office at 760-325-4490 for tickets and information.

60 Years of ‘Angel View’ Celebration
Tracy Powers, DeAnn Lubell Ames, Dr. Helene Kalfuss, Jacqueline Kendiz and Dr. Martin Russell Story and photos by Pat Krause Angel View Crippled Children’s Foundation just celebrated its 60th years with an Anniversary that was held at the Palm Springs Convention Center. They honored all past honorees and board members. This celebration thanked all the supporters for their assistance in making Angel View a special place for children and adults with
disabilities for the last 60 years. The event always starts with a shopping bazaar and raffles. There was a social hour where guests could mingle and shop and the many vendor booths with clothes, jewelry, purses and anything else a lady would like to buy. Each person that bought a ticket got the newly released Angel View Book on its history, A Miracle and a Dream. Guests
could buy the book for friends or family. Angel View provides 24-hour care for people with disabilities. They currently have 19 homes where clients live together with constant care. Angel View also teaches clients how to live with their disability and learn many things they didn’t know they could do. These are residential homes that house clients with
Terry Roby, Mel Haber and Mary Roche nursing care. Angel View also provides Day-care programs, Outreach services, counseling and physical therapies. All proceeds went to Angel View. Angel View relies
on donations from supporters through style shows and the many thrift stores and in the Desert. Entertainment was provided by Patricia Welsh and Lola Rossi.
