“Precipitous Drop” In Latino Students in College By Desert Star Staff The number of Latino students on college campuses fell by 20% last year, mostly
because of COVID-19related job loss or illness, and so far, enrollment isn’t showing signs of bouncing
By Desert Star Staff SAN FRANCISCO The pandemic has had devastating impacts on the LGBTQ+ community, so the one million-member Equality California has launched a bilingual, statewide education and outreach campaign. Unveiled on Tuesday, the idea is to make sure people know when and where to get the vaccine and promote the science that shows the new coronavirus vaccines are safe and highly effective. Rick Chavez Zbur, executive director of Equality California, said COVID-19 had taken a toll on many in the LGBTQ+ community’s health and well-being. “And that’s particularly true for the most vulnerable members of our community,”
he said, “transgender and gender non-conforming people, LGBTQ+ people of color and immigrants and people living with HIV or other pre-existing conditions.” The latest study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found the LGBTQ+ population is more vulnerable to COVID, partly because it also has higher rates of underlying health conditions, including cancer and HIV. Last fall, researchers at UCLA surveyed more than 12,000 American adults on the impact of the pandemic. Study coauthor Kerith Conron, research director at the UCLA School of Law’s Williams Institute, said the numbers show COVID-19 especially
back. The trend reverses gains made over the years in higher education among Latino students nationwide. Deborah Santiago, chief executive of the nonprofit advocacy group Excelencia
in Education, said many students have dropped out or delayed enrollment to help their families cope with reduced household income and coronavirus illness. “That precipitous drop not

Biden blasts Texas, Mississippi for lifting Covid-19 restrictions
By Desert Star Staff President Joe Biden voiced his disapproval of states like Texas and Mississippi lifting mask mandates and other Covid-19 restrictions, calling it a “mistake” and “Neanderthal thinking,” a term
that ruffled a few feathers. “I think it’s a big mistake. Look, I hope everybody’s realized by now, these masks make a difference,” Biden said when directly asked about the two states. Despite a promise that
vaccines will be available for every American by May, Biden said masks are as crucial as ever. “The last thing – the last thing we need is Neanderthal thinking that in the meantime, everything’s fine, take off your
mask, forget it. It still matters,” he said, then referencing a card he claims to carry with him that has the daily death toll from Covid-19. “It’s critical – critical, critical, critical – that they follow the science: Wash your hands, hot water, do it frequently. Wear a mask and stay socially distanced. And I know you all know that. I wish the heck some of our elected officials knew it,” he added. Many prominent liberals have blasted Texas and Mississippi’s governors for moving away from lockdown restrictions, despite both states continuing vaccine distribution plans. Like filmmaker Michael Moore and political commentator Keith Olbermann, some have even suggested that Texas residents should not be afforded the vaccine following Gov. Greg Abbott’s announcement this week.
However, Biden’s “Neanderthal thinking” remark has earned pushback from many, including the governor of Mississippi, who slammed the “insult” from the president. “President Biden said allowing Mississippians to decide how to protect themselves is ‘neanderthal thinking,’” Gov. Tate Reeves tweeted in response to Biden. “Mississippians don’t need handlers. As numbers drop, they can assess their choices and listen to experts. I guess I just think we should trust Americans, not insult them.” On his state reopening, Gov. Abbott said this week that his announcement “doesn’t abandon safe practices that Texans have mastered” during the pandemic, but rather acknowledges that “each person has a role in their own personal safety and the safety of others.”
A Little Superhero is Flying High Thanks to His Mommy’s Kidney By Desert Star Staff March 1, 2021 -- March is National Kidney Month, which is a month-long, awarenessraising grassroots effort to spread the word nationwide about the importance of kidney health. A South Carolina family knows all too well the lifesaving difference a healthy kidney can make. Lukas Brown was born in late April 2017, and on his second day of life, a blood test revealed his tiny kidneys were only functioning at 20%. The baby was diagnosed with Bilateral Cystic Dysplasia and End-Stage Renal Disease. Luke’s parents, Erin and Jeff, were devastated to hear the news. Luke’s sister had experienced no kidney problems and was waiting (somewhat impatiently) at home to meet her little brother. That would not be the case for some time because Luke was quickly transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he would spend the first seven weeks of his life. Luke started dialysis when he was only a week old, and he survived four surgeries during his first month of life. Peritoneal dialysis did not work for the infant, but hemodialysis did, and his lab numbers finally began to stabilize in June. Erin and Jeff remember feeling their first sense of hope. On June 13, Luke was discharged and was able to go home to South Carolina for the first time. Life remained complicated because the baby had to have hemodialysis treatments every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. However, November

2017 brought promising news. Erin and Jeff were told Luke’s kidneys were now functioning at a sufficient level for the baby to grow and thrive without dialysis. While overjoyed, they understood this was a temporary respite, and a kidney transplant was inevitable for Luke’s long-term survival. Erin remembers, “At the time of Luke’s diagnosis, we were overwhelmed emotionally and financially. Being told our baby boy needed a life-saving kidney transplant changed our lives forever. While we wanted to singularly focus on our son’s care and our family’s well-being, we were anxious about the future. We did not know how we would manage the financial burden of his ongoing medical care and a kidney transplant.” The first part of 2018 brought some ‘normalcy’ to the family’s life. While Luke had regular medical checkups, lab work, and medications, the Brown family of four felt blessed to be under one roof in their Lancaster, South Carolina home. But in August 2018, they were told it was time to start preparing for Luke’s kidney transplant. Both Erin and Jeff began the testing process to see if either of them were a match to donate a kidney to their precious little boy. As Luke’s kidney transplant became something that would happen sooner than later, Erin and Jeff started thinking about the increased financial burden their family would be experiencing. They both felt a sense of relief when a transplant social worker introduced them to the
Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) and suggested they reach out to learn more about how COTA might be able to reduce some of their stress. Erin called COTA on October 31 and was able to get answers to their many questions quickly were first introduced to COTA it bro, taught us a sense of hope that we would be able to take on the financial reality of our son’s life-saving kidney transplant,” Erin said. “Finding COTA allowed us to focus solely on Luke’s health without worrying about how we were going to pay for his care.” COTA received the family’s paperwork two weeks after Erin’s initial telephone call, and the Brown family officially became part of the COTA Family. The Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) uniquely understands that parents who care for a child or young adult before, during,g and after a life-saving transplant have enough to deal with. Hence, COTA’s model shifts the responsibility for fundraising to a team of trained volunteers. COTA is a 501(c)3 charity, so all COTA contributions are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law. COTA funds are available for a lifetime of transplant-related expenses. On November 12, 2018, a COTA fundraising specialist trained the family’s volunteers via teleconference because their key COTA team leaders were located in South Carolina and Ohio. The COTA staff member talked to the many teleconference participants about COTA’s fundraising process and March 5, 2021
shared information about fundraising templates, fundraising guidance, and the no-cost website the volunteers and family would be given for fundraising and promoting the family’s story. This group of friends and family quickly got to work in two different states organizing fundraisers for COTA in honor of Team Lukas to help with mounting
transplant-related expenses. These COTA volunteers worked nonstop to plan and implement creative COTA fundraisers that generated more than $45,000 for transplant-related expenses. Erin and Jeff started using the COTA for Team Lukas website to blog updates to their large group of supporters.

What Can California Learn from Texas’ Blackouts?
By Desert Star Staff LANCASTER, Calif. In the wake of last week’s massive power blackouts in Texas, there’s a lot of blame to go around. But groups that fight climate change say the root problem, in every state, is burning fossil fuels. Clean-energy advocates have said climate change leads to more extreme weather events, from the storm that froze Texas to the heat and drought driving wildfires in California. San Luis Obispo Mayor Heidi Harmon said that’s why her city uses 100% renewable energy and bans gas hookups in new homes. “When you look at a situation like Texas, so

much of that is climate exacerbated,” she said. “And so, we’re getting into some really pretty serious, probably, feedback loops here - that we’re going to have to do everything in our power to turn this around before it’s too late if it’s not already too late.” As of 2019, data from the California Energy Commission show, almost half the state’s energy came from natural gas. Natural-gas suppliers have countered that it’s cleaner than coal and easily accessible, day or night. Ventura County Supervisor Carmen Ramirez is a former mayor of Oxnard, a lowerincome community of color that has hosted oil and gas production for decades but recently rejected a new gas-powered plant. She said the city now boasts a clean-energy storage facility. “We’ve paid our dues for energy production for the region,” she said. “Now, it’s time for us to have a more modern source of energy that doesn’t pollute, that doesn’t harm the health of our people.”
Oxnard is one of many California cities moving away from fossil-fuel plants and toward renewable energy to help slow climate change. (Earthjustice) Rex Parris, the Republican mayor of Lancaster, noted that his city is the first to run entirely on hydrogen power. “The only thing standing in our way of solving this crisis is the will to do it,” he said. “Two years ago, I would have told you, ‘We don’t have the technology to save the
planet.’ But now we do. We just have to move rapidly. And in Lancaster, we’ve been hurrying - and making a lot of money in the process.” A study from the nonprofit Climate Central found that hurricanes, wildfires, heat storms, and other extreme weather events caused 67%

The latest data show that, nationwide, college applications are slightly above what they were last year. limate change is an issue that impacts everyone, especially children. The impacts can be seen first-hand, as the planet warms, and human fingerprints are all over the consequences: bigger, stronger hurricanes; deadly heat waves; more intense downpours; and devastating wildfires. In fact, 60% of Americans are concerned about climate change, according to a survey by the Potential Energy Coalition. For many moms, having a child is what made them start to care about climate change in the first place. Eighty-three percent of moms are concerned about climate change and want to do something about it. “It’s hard to study climate change and aspects of climate change and be a mother because the data’s very real to you,” said Dr. Emily Fischer, atmospheric chemist and associate professor in the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University.
“We need a massive shift in the way we produce energy within 10 years, the same time period I need to save and plan to send my daughter to college. We’re hoping moms will realize climate change impacts their children and that we have solutions, but we need to act relatively quickly.” If you’re not sure where to begin, however, know that whether big or small, steps, such as these ideas from the climate scientists at Science Moms, can add up to create meaningful solutions. Learn about climate change. Education is a powerful tool, so learning all you can about climate change is one of the best ways to get involved. “Sorting through myriad information online can be daunting,” said Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, scientist and professor at Texas Tech University. “That’s why Science Moms was created. This nonpartisan group of leading climate scientists, who are also mothers, aims to break down climate change through simple, engaging content.”
Raise your voice. Leaders have the ability to truly take action on the scale needed to make lasting progress on this challenge, but they need to know that it’s a top priority of individuals. You can add your name to petitions and invite others to do the same, attend local meetings to voice your support for reducing carbon pollution and clean energy projects and meet with elected leaders to ensure they know you stand behind them. Of all the actions you can take, one of the most powerful is telling your representatives this is an issue you care about. “By investing in a clean energy future and commonsense solutions that keep families and communities safe, government leaders have the ability to enact policies that escalate on a scale we could never achieve alone,” Hayhoe said. “They all need to know we stand behind their decisions to tackle this issue.” Talk about it. In order to avoid some of the worst impacts of climate change, fast action is needed. The more people who know the facts about this issue,
Talking and Listening to Your Kids About Climate Change Climate change can be a scary subject no matter how old your kids are, and there are some big concepts that are hard to understand. For others, they know that their future is at risk and are taking matters into their own hands by becoming activists on social media and marching in youth climate strikes. Focus on developing a love for nature and the environment. Encourage your kids to spend time outdoors and plan activities for
the family that celebrate nature, like camping and hiking. You can also introduce and inspire healthy curiosity by reading books about different aspects of the environment, like oceans, land formations and the animals that inhabit different climates. When talking with older kids, try to avoid scientific jargon and complicated explanations. Answer questions to the best of your ability and work together to find answers to
the things you don’t know. Correct misinformation they may be hearing from others and be sure to include facts along with your own perspective as you discuss climate change. It’s common for kids of all ages to be anxious about the impact of climate change. You can help channel that energy into productive action by getting involved in local organizations that are focused on improving the environment.
the quicker an impact can be made. Share what you learn with your neighbors and other parents to help make everyone more aware of the issue. Also remember that environmental concerns aren’t just for adults. Oftentimes, concern for the climate comes from children. Talking with your kids about the importance of good stewardship and empowering them to make a difference can affect how the next generation approaches concerns like climate change and pollution. Make climate-conscious choices. There are nearly countless examples of smaller actions you can take to adapt your own home and life. Options to consider include switching to electric cars, buying green electricity (now available in 24 states), putting solar panels on your roof, insulating your house or adding more plant-based foods to your diet. For more information and to get involved, visit sciencemoms.com.
Climate Change Myths and Facts There are many misconceptions about climate change. It’s a complex issue and a better understanding comes when you can sort the myths from the facts. Myth: Climate change isn’t confirmed science. Fact: More than 99% of climate scientists agree on the basic facts about climate change: it’s real, it’s human-caused, it’s harming people now and it’s solvable. Myth: Climate change is a natural phenomenon. Fact: The climate has changed naturally in the past, but right now, the world is warming up to 100 times faster than it has previously, according to research published in “Scientific American.” Billions of tons of burning coal, oil and natural gas have released carbon pollution into the air that traps the sun’s heat, making the planet hotter while simultaneously melting ice and raising sea levels. Myth: Climate change is in the distant future. Fact: It’s happening right now. In the West, hot, dry conditions are fueling massive fires with smoke that blocks out the sun and pollutes the air. In the Southwest, historic droughts threaten the food supply. In the South, warmer oceans are fueling stronger, deadlier hurricanes. Myth: It might get bad, but America can handle it. Fact: If left unchecked, the heat trapped by the thickening pollution blanket directly threatens human health and may make virtually every natural disaster more deadly and destructive. These disasters are increasingly happening at the same time, destroying more homes and businesses, and there is only so much emergency relief available. Myth: There is nothing we can do about it. Fact: It’s not too late to prevent the worst-case scenarios. That requires reducing pollution and moving from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy sources, and relying on existing technology to build a clean economy. Governments across the world can work together to tackle climate change and invest in a safer future for children, but they need to know that this is a top priority for families.

If you’re working at a computer, adjust the screen height to eye level and consider elevating the keyboard to help keep your hands, wrists, and forearms in line and parallel to the floor. Also, note how often you are on the phone, which may contribute to poor neck posture. Instead of tilting your chin down, raise the device to eye level and avoid tucking it between your ear and shoulder, or opt for speakerphone or headset. Take Breaks. You may notice you feel sore even if you maintain good posture throughout your workday. If you stay in one spot for too long, your muscles and joints may get stiff. Consider taking quick breaks every 30 minutes to get up and stretch or walk around. This may promote better blood flow for your muscles and joints, and it may also give your eyes and mind a break. Stay Active. While some people with low back pain may be tempted to consider
bed rest, staying active in many cases may be the best option. Low impact activities to consider include walking and swimming, while research indicates that strengthening leg muscles may also prove helpful. You might also try yoga and tai chi, as they’ve been shown to ease moderate to severe low back pain. If time is a factor, a brief walk at lunch or going up and down the stairs a few times can help you stay active. Eat a Healthier Diet. The bones, muscles, discs, and other structures in your back may need proper nutrition to support your body. Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and healthy fats may help reduce inflammation, often contributing to chronic back pain. Eating a more nutritious diet may also help you maintain a healthy weight, which may also reduce your risk for back pain. Consider care options. As the tourism sector returns to activity, I am pleased to announce the resumption of the tours. The guides have suffered a severe blow during the corona crisis, and this initiative was designed to give them and the public air to breathe. We recently expanded the initiative to fund entry fees, not just to national parks but also to attractions across the country and cities, to provide financial assistance to the attractions sector, which has also been severely damaged. After a bare-knuckle fan is slammed backward over a table on a wrestling return By Desert Star Staff Shaquille O’Neal was stretched out into an ambulance after being sent flying out of the ring in an explosive first wrestling match with AEW Dynamite, culminating in the former NBA star being slammed violently through a table. The basketball Hall of Famer, from his time with the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat, teamed up with Jade Cargill to fight Cody Rhodes and Red Velvet at Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, Florida. “I’m not a professional wrestler, but I’ve been in a match before,” Shaq said before the match. “I’ve got a lot of moves in my arsenal. When you step inside somebody’s world,
you have to stick to what you’re masterful at. “I’m not acrobatic. I’m not going to be jumping off the ropes. I’m coming with the power game. When I get hands-on him, I’m going to display this power.” That sent the towering basketball icon flying and both athletes crashing over two tables, leaving 7ft 1in O’Neal prone on his back on the floor. Following the crash, O’Neal was seen stretched out in an ambulance. He was forced to bend his knees to fit into the car. When wrestling commentator Tony Schiavone came to check on him later, Shaq was said to have mysteriously gone missing from the vehicle.
Trump calls for breaking up Big Tech
Says failure to restore freedom of speech would doom Republican Party
By Desert Star Staff Former President Donald Trump has called for breaking up giant technology companies and taking away their Section 230 liability protections. He argued that the Big Tech mutes conservative voices like his own. “The time has come to break up Big Tech monopolies
and restore fair competition,” Trump said Sunday at the CPAC conference in Orlando. “Republicans, conservatives must open our platforms and repeal section 230 liability protections,” he added. While in the past the public had a chance to hear both sides of the argument before making an informed decision, the big tech
censorship disproportionately targeted conservatives, depriving them of the right to be heard, Trump argued. You would win, you would lose... But now there is no debate because they refuse to allow our side even to speak or to be heard If the power of the big tech cannot be curbed on the federal level immediately,
Trump urged “every state in the union where we have the votes” to “punish Big Tech with major sanctions whenever they silence conservative voices.” He noted that Texas and Florida “are doing this” already. Florida Governor Gov. Ron DeSantis has been championing a bill seeking to rein in tech companies by allowing users to bring a “cause of action” against platforms violating Florida law. The bill, if becomes law, would bar platforms from rapidly changing their policy and enforcing it selectively against users. Under the law, consumers would have the right to “opt-out” from algorithms that shadowban certain information. “As these companies have grown and their influence expanded, big tech has come to look more like a big brother with each passing day,” DeSantis said, as he voiced support for the bill in early February. Texas Governor Greg
Abbott earlier this month announced his office was working on a bill to “prevent social media providers like Facebook & Twitter from canceling conservative speech.” The bill will reportedly give the state more leverage to regulate social media companies and allow Texans, yanked off social media platforms over political or religious views, the right to take Twitter and Facebook to court. Trump made his comments on Silicon Valley giants and the censoring of conservative voices – including his social media accounts – after calling for reforms to ensure “fair, honest and secure elections.” For instance, he said, the US must end mass mailin voting, require voter identification, verify that each voter is a legal citizen, and provide chain-of-custody protection for all ballots. “All the election-integrity measures in the world will mean nothing if we don’t have free speech,” he stressed.
President Rivlin received diplomatic credentials from Ambassador of United Arab Emirates
Photo by Mark Neyman, GPO By Desert Star Staff President Rivlin: “The entire Israeli people welcome you with joy. This will be your most important mission – to welcome the hands reaching out to you, to meet the Israeli people, and to get to know them up close. Treaties are signed by leaders, but real, sustained peace is made between peoples, face to face.” President of Israel Reuven (Ruvi) Rivlin today, Monday 1 March / 17 Adar, received diplomatic credentials from the first Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to the State of Israel, Mohamed Mahmoud Fateh Ali Al Khaja. The Ambassador presented his letter of credence on assuming his role as www.desertstarweekly.com
Ambassador to the State of Israel in an official ceremony in the Hall of Beit HaNasi. During the ceremony, the national anthems of both countries were played by the Band of the IDF. The Ambassador reviewed an IDF honor guard, reduced in size because of the coronavirus restrictions, and signed the Beit HaNasi guest book. The president and the Ambassador then delivered joint statements and held a working meeting. “Ahlan wa’Sahlan, Siyadat a-saphir! Marhaba bikum fi-Yerushalayim, f’il-Quds!” the president welcomed the Ambassador in Arabic and said that he was happy to meet him and his delegation in Israel, in holy Jerusalem. The president said it was
a very moving occasion for him as President of Israel and a special moment for him as the son of Prof. Yosef Yoel Rivlin ל“ ז, who dearly loved the Arabic language and the culture of the peoples of the region. He said, “My father’s life’s work was the translation of the Holy Quran into Hebrew. My father’s house, not far from here in Jerusalem, was filled with Jewish, Muslim, and Christian scholars, who learned from each other and imagined a future of the partnership, mutual respect, and peace between Abraham’s sons and daughters. In this home, I learned that we, the people living here, were not doomed to live together but destined to do so on this land, to build it, develop it and lead it to a time March 5, 2021
of peace and prosperity. “ We look in wonder at the oasis in the desert that you have created. The Emirati leadership has established, with wisdom, innovation, and sense, a state that seeks peace, a hub for technology, economic development, and tourism, a place that looks ahead. Our two countries share this ethos – a small people that wish to turn arid land into a blooming garden, against all odds.” “We have nurtured the relations between us for some time, believing that if we waited patiently, the time would come when we could take them one step further and deepen the friendship between us and make it public. Thanks to brave and wise leadership, we are fortunate enough to see this wonderful day when the Emirati flag flies beside the Israeli flag over Beit HaNasi, the home of the Israeli people.” “You should know that not only I am moved. The entire Israeli people welcome you
with joy and open their arms to welcome you to us. And this, Mr. Ambassador, will be your most important mission – to welcome the hands reaching out to you, to meet the Israeli people, and to get to know them up close. Treaties are signed by leaders, but real, sustained peace is made from people to people, face to face. There are so many things we can do together, Israelis and Emiratis, to advance our peoples and the whole Middle East, to a time of regional cooperation, mutual respect, prosperity, and peace.” At the end of his remarks, the president wished the ambassador success on his mission and invited Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zaid to make a state visit to Israel and Jerusalem. “I hope you great success in building this bridgehead between our countries and our peoples. The doors of Beit HaNasi are always open to you. Ahalan wa’Sahlan bikum!”

fter months of unfamiliar restrictions and guidelines, pandemic fatigue is affecting how some Americans protect their health. However, experts warn that diligence is still extremely important because new mutations and variants of the virus that causes COVID-19 are being discovered. The typical cold and flu season also brings added threats to people’s health and wellness. “Staying diligent is one of the most important things we can do as we navigate through cold and flu season as well as the COVID pandemic,” said family medicine physician Dr. Jennifer Caudle. Though you may still be spending more time at home, it’s important to take proactive steps to maintain your health. Caudle offers these practical tips to help protect your health while you’re waiting for vaccination eligibility amid the pandemic this cold and flu season.
Avoid Exposure
As COVID-19 continues to impact communities from coast to coast, there’s no better time to avoid getting sick. Even if you catch a less serious illness like a cold or the flu, health care professionals in many areas are stretched thin. What’s more, getting sick could compromise your immune system, making you more susceptible to a more serious infection. Minimizing your risk of exposure means limiting close contact with others outside your household, wearing a mask and washing your hands regularly with soap for at least 20 seconds. An alcohol-based sanitizer that is at least 60% alcohol can substitute for hand washing, if necessary. Always avoid touching your face when out and about, and when possible, avoid high-touch surfaces like door handles and light switches. If you’re prone to allergies, be conscious of what triggers allergic reactions and manage your allergies so you’re able to easily identify any new symptoms that may not be allergy related.
Practice Self-Care
Staying healthy isn’t just about avoiding germs. Managing your physical health means keeping your body in top condition by eating right, exercising, getting enough sleep and ditching habits that can negatively impact your body, like smoking and excess drinking. It’s also important to monitor your mental health since factors like stress and depression can take a physical toll that impacts your body’s immune response.
Pinpoint Symptoms
If you get sick, it’s important to pay close attention to your symptoms. However, this cold and flu season brings a unique variable with the possibility that your symptoms may actually stem from a mild case of COVID-19. Weather may also fuel stronger than usual allergy responses, so distinguishing between cold, flu, COVID-19 and allergy symptoms can be especially tricky. Testing may be necessary to get the proper diagnosis and ensure you’re taking the right precautions to prevent the spread of any infection. If you have questions or concerns about your symptoms or about COVID-19, consult your health care professional.
Treat Symptoms
Depending on your diagnosis, a health care professional may suggest medication to help treat symptoms until your illness runs its course. There are a variety of products available over the counter that are commonly used to treat symptoms of respiratory viral infections. Many provide relief from multiple symptoms in a single dose. For example, an option like Mucinex DM lasts 12 hours when used as directed and contains dextromethorphan, which helps to control cough, and guaifenesin to help thin and loosen mucus. You can identify the right formula to provide relief based on symptoms you are experiencing by using the online tool at Mucinex.com, where you can also find more information regarding self-care remedies.
How long a cough lasts depends on its cause, but you may be able to tame the symptoms until it’s gone.

Produce is packed with vitamin C, a nutrient that helps support your immune system. Menthol may be a soothing natural remedy. It’s one of the compounds that gives mint its flavor, so brew a cup of strong mint tea and put it to the test.
Steam and Hydration n
Both steam and water help thin your mucus, which may help clear chest congestion. Try a warm, steamy shower or a soak in a hot tub and drink plenty of fluids to keep your body hydrated.

If you’re struggling with a parched throat from your cough, try gargling salt water to soothe discomfort. Lozenges increase your saliva production to help soothe a parched throat and get you feeling better as your cough subsides. Exposure to particulates in the air, like pollutants and irritants, may be linked to nighttime dry coughing. A high-efficiency particulate air filter can help remove them. Wipe down surfaces. Cleaning removes settled dust and pollen while disinfection can help remove lingering cold and flu germs. If you’re smoking, stop. Smoking is a leading cause of chronic cough. Also avoid secondhand smoke as much as possible. Rest recharges your immune system, and getting enough sleep may help you cope with an illness that is the cause of a lingering cough. An option like Mucinex Fast-Max All-In-One Cold & Flu relieves nine symptoms including cough, stuffy nose, sore throat, fever and headache so you can get on with your day. Rely on a cough medication that contains dextromethorphan, which works on the cough center of your brain to help suppress coughing.
