22nd Annual Evening Under the Stars
Story and Photos by Pat Krause The fabulous 22nd Annual Evening Under the Star was held on May 9th at the O’Donnell Golf Club lawn. The event is an awards ceremony where four local people are honored, and entertainment is provided. Hundreds of people arrived to lighted stars hanging overhead. A large silent auction was held in two tents on either side of the venue. There was an amazing array of items for the silent auction. Appetizers were served by people inside a roving table working their way thru the crowd. Bars were set up in several locations on the grounds for easy access to get a beverage. Colorful jackets, pants and gowns were the norm for attire for the evening. It’s a night for everyone to shine and enjoy each other’s company while raising money for AIDS Assistance Program, which is a much-needed charity in the Desert. They help hundreds of people living with HIV/AIDS each month with food vouchers and much more. There is a long waiting list for people in need of their help. The honorees included, Betty Frances with the Jeanette Rockefeller Humanitarian Award, Gloria Greer with the Gloria Greene Inspiration Award, John Williams and Richard DeSantis with the Herb Lazenby Community Service Award. Each honoree was given a beautiful accolade in why they were
chosen for these awards. Each Honoree gave a rousing speech on accepting the award. A Special tribute was given to Mark Anton. The Host and emcee for the evening were actor, TV host and TV personality, Mark Walberg. There were a few live auction items. Singer Mary Wilson arrived on stage to show the guests how they could text a donation from their phone with the help of CEO/Director of AIDS Assistance Program, Mark Anton. The goal was to raise $100,000 to help Singer and songwriter, Barry Manilow those on the waiting list. In the few short minutes, they had raised over $60.000 from phone texts. Celebrity Barry Manilow was a big supporter of the event with his presence as he was also a Headliner several times at Evening Under the Stars. Everyone was waiting for the Entertainment, Darlene Love. Darlene was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011, has been awarded a Grammy among other awards during her long career and has notwithstanding acted in movies. She started with background vocals with The Blossoms, The Crystals, Dionne Warwick and even Elvis Presley to name a few. This year, Dior selected the Palais Bulles owned by fashion designer Pierre Cardin, nestled in the mountaintops outside of Cannes, which plays host to the film festival that kicks off Wednesday. Ensuring Continued Asset Growth and Lifetime Income

of assets is critically important because of the always-present risk of inflation. Even an inflation rate as low as 4 percent can cut a retiree’s purchasing power by half in about 18 years. While Social Security and some pension plans address the risk of inflation with automatic cost of living adjustments, individual savings and investment vehicles may not handle this issue well if an investment portfolio is too conservative and does not generate enough income to outpace inflation. For this reason, it is important to position investments to ensure continued growth. However, many older clients may be risk averse and will want to ensure that market losses will not erode the value of their investments. To ensure continued growth while reducing overall risk, clients can spread savings among investments with different levels
and types of risk and return potential. In other words, Financial professionals can help clients diversify assets by spreading their savings among stocks, bonds, annuities, market linked CDs, REITs, and money market/stable value investments. While diversification cannot assure a profit or protect against loss in a declining market, it can help guard against unfavorable fluctuations so that declines in interest income will be offset by growth in other investments— namely investments with a potential for gain. It can also help ensure that assets will grow at a rate that keeps up with or exceeds inflation. Many senior clients also fear they will outlive their money. Increased longevity coupled with spiraling medical costs can jeopardize even the best planned retirement. Bonds, dividends from stocks, and
products such as annuities that liquidate principal in a structured, systematic way can address your needs for lifetime income. Dollar cost averaging is a technique of buying a fixed dollar amount on a particular investment on a regular schedule, regardless of share price. More shares are purchased when the prices are low and fewer purchased when the price is higher. This is often referred to as a constant dollar plan. Reverse dollar cost averaging occurs when withdrawals are larger than returns of an investment. If you own a variable annuity, which will have fluctuations due to the market risk of this investment, the income taken will fluctuate if you withdraw funds based on number of shares, however, if you withdraw a set amount monthly, funds can deplete faster due to the withdrawing a greater
percentage than you are earning. Always factor in inflation to your retirement plan. Remember when you could buy a gallon of gasoline for 18 cents? That was the cost which was charged in 1961. Can you figure the annual percentage of inflation to present, based on current prices? This may provide an insight into where prices will be in the future and can erode more of your retirement funds due to loss of purchasing power.
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Many common interest community associations struggle filling open director seats on their boards. Frustrated and discouraged boards periodically consult with me, questioning how their association can proceed when they have a hard time finding enough volunteers to simply meet quorum. There are four main reasons why associations have difficulty finding volunteers, but each of
the causes are solvable. Associations in conflict. Some association boards are in so much conflict, with disorderly meetings and unprofessional director behavior, that the normal volunteer has no desire to join the fracas. There are a myriad of ways to improve board behavior and professionalize board meetings. Adopt a board code of conduct – CAI has a great Model Code of Ethics at www. responsiblecommunities.com. Adopt meeting rules requiring orderly behavior and providing clear procedures for handling disruption. Consider enrolling directors in a board training class – your management company, HOA attorney, or local CAI Chapter can help. Overly large boards. I recently met with an association of under 30 homes with a board of seven - one fourth of the entire community! Some association boards are simply too large for the size of the membership. Many associations of over 1,000 homes can operate very
well with a board of five, and it is hard to imagine needing a board larger than seven seats for even the largest associations. Reducing board size will require a membership vote on a bylaw (and sometimes also CC&R) amendment. The volunteer manager(s). The most common reason people will not volunteer is that they are intimidated by the amount of work put in by the volunteers as managers. Some directors spend 30-40 hours weekly on association business – either saving the cost of a manager, or doing work that the paid manager should be doing. Such a director is actually a free manager (or co-manager). Even very small associations benefit greatly from qualified professional association management. The director role is to make good decisions, not to carry out those decisions. The director of a professionally managed association working over 8 hours weekly on HOA business may need to back away and allow (and insist) the
manager do their job. If they don’t, ask the company to assign a different manager, but don’t do the manager’s work yourself. The dictator. Potential volunteers may avoid association service where it seems the president is the only director which matters because the association is run by the president and not the board. Some people do not successfully adapt from normal corporate leadership to homeowner association leadership. HOA presidents have less power than for-profit presidents, because HOA decisions are by the board of directors, not the president. Association presidents who fail to recognize this are often headed for trouble, frustration and conflict, and will wonder why they can’t find good people to join their board… but it is not “their” board, it is THE board. Sometimes the dictator president who fails to modify their behavior and refuses to adopt a teamwork approach needs to be replaced by the board with someone who better understands the role. Does your association exhibit one or more of the above characteristics? Give your board an honest self-assessment, and move toward healthy governance – you may be surprised to see how quickly things can turn around and volunteers begin to step up.

record,” said Tyson. The squadron deploys its helicopters and personnel around the world aboard a variety of Navy ships, including frigates, destroyers, cruisers and aircraft carriers. While aboard ships at sea, the squadron conducts a variety of missions. “Our missions aboard ships include tracking and hunting enemy submarines, combating enemy surface ships, search and rescue, communications relay, and ferrying supplies, cargo and personnel,” said Lt. Reagan Lauritzen, Commander, Naval Air Force U.S.
Pacific Fleet spokesperson. As a yeoman, Tyson is responsible for supervision of administrative duties and ensures all paperwork is managed properly. He also mentors three sailors, guiding them in their careers as well as personally in their day-to-day life. “I enjoy the satisfaction, I get knowing that I’m taking care of all the Sailors in the squadron, from the most junior to the most senior member.” said Tyson. The MH-60R Sea Hawk is over 60 feet long, and can weigh up to 23,500 lbs. It is replacing the Navy’s older helicopters because of its greater versatility and more leading weapon systems. “The MH-60R feature’s more sophisticated electronics, like a new low-frequency sonar and an advanced radar system,” said Lauritzen. “The Seahawk can also launch torpedoes, fire Hellfire missiles and laser-guided rockets, and carry crew served weapons” Tyson said he is proud to be a part of the 313-member squadron that is ready to defend America at all times. “My parents are retired Navy, so I enjoy seeing how the Navy has evolved since they served versus today,” said Tyson. Being a sailor assigned to a helicopter squadron and in a deployable, status means spending a lot of time away from friends and family, but serving his country makes it worth it for Tyson. “I’ve had three back-to-back deployments in four years, and I enjoyed traveling to unusual countries and having distinct cultural experiences,” said Tyson. DHS Resident Hits the Road to Fight HIV/AIDS
By Andrew Cardenas Desert Hot Springs Ca.— Desert Hot Springs resident and local business owner, Andrew Cardenas will hit the road this June to join thousands of other participants for AIDS/LifeCycle— the seven-day, 545-mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles that is the world’s largest annual, single-event AIDS fundraiser. This is his 7th time serving as a volunteer “roadie for the event, supporting the thousands of cyclists who will make the journey from May 31 - June 6. “I am committed to AIDS/ LifeCycle because I want to see an end to HIV/AIDS. I’m doing my part to support the Los Angeles LGBT Center and San Francisco AIDS Foundation so they can
continue to provide critical services for the HIV-positive community and prevent new HIV infections through programs, services, and education, says Cardenas. “I look forward to spending a week on the road with the amazing community of AIDS/LifeCycle participants. We have the power to stop HIV transmission in our lifetime, and AIDS/LifeCycle plays an important role in making that happen. I came out in the early 80’s just before I turned 18. The headline of the newspaper that week was, “AIDS Now #1 Health Hazard I had no idea how much that would impact my life. From that time to today I have witnessed hundreds of friends and neighbors die around me.
My life will never be the same because of that. When the first California AIDS ride was created in 1993, I signed up then. I did not own a bike, I smoked and my idea of exercise was walking up and down the stairs to my car to go buy cigarettes. I borrowed a friend’s old heavy mountain bike and started riding. That first ride changed my life. In the seven days it takes the participants to reach Los Angeles, more than 1,000 people in the United States will become infected with HIV. Especially alarming is the fact that one out of every five people living with HIV nationwide is not aware of their status. “What these cyclists and roadies contribute to the
fight against HIV/AIDS is truly remarkable, said AIDS/LifeCycle Senior Director Greg Sroda. “Each year people from across the country and all over the world join us not only because the event is a life-changing experience for them, but also because the money they raise changes the lives of people living with HIV. Since the ride began in 1993, our participants have raised more than $200 million and completed more than 42,000 journeys from San Francisco to Los Angeles. AIDS/LifeCycle participants play a significant role in helping to promote HIV/AIDS education and awareness through outreach to hundreds of thousands of people who support their efforts. On average, each cyclist raises nearly $6,000 through
their network of donors, which includes family, friends, and coworkers. Roadies are not required to fundraise, but each year they bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations. The Los Angeles LGBT Center and San Francisco AIDS Foundation, the beneficiaries and producers of AIDS/LifeCycle, are at the forefront of efforts to reduce new HIV infections and are dedicated to ensuring access to proper medical care for anyone who needs it. Both organizations deliver essential community programs and services for HIV prevention, testing, care, and education. Visit us at aidslifecycle.org

Agents Foil Meth Smuggling Attempt and find Cross-Border Tunnel
Agents from El Centro Sector Border Patrol’s Border Search Trauma and Rescue unit discovered a tunnel leading from Mexico into the United States. By Desert Star Staff CALEXICO, Calif. –El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Calexico Station foiled an illegal narcotics smuggling attempt of more than 69 pounds of methamphetamine and subsequently discovered a sophisticated, cross-border tunnel. The initial incident occurred on Saturday, at approximately 9:30 p.m., when Border Patrol agents operating a Remote Video Surveillance System observed four men on the south bank of the All-American Canal near Calexico, California attempting to smuggle narcotics into the United States. Border Patrol agents responded to the location and arrested one man in the canal wearing a wet-suit while the other three fled back to Mexico. During the arrest and while searching the area, agents discovered scuba diving equipment and 25 vacuum sealed packages containing 69 pounds of methamphetamine. Fontana Man Charged in Illegal Recycling Haul
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO – The Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (Cal Recycle) has announced the arrest of a California truck driver, apprehended at the border with 9,280 pounds of empty beverage containers. The load had the potential to drain California’s Redemption Value fund of $13,586 dollars, if not for the diligence of Cal Recycle’s enforcement partners at the California Department of Justice and the California Department of Food and Agriculture.
“Cal Recycle’s increased enforcement efforts are paying off, and this latest arrest sends a strong message that recycling fraud doesn’t pay,” Cal Recycle Director Caroll Mortensen said. “Californians contribute to the CRV fund at the cash register and rightfully expect those recycling fees won’t wind up in the hands of criminals.” On Feb. 15, CDFA inspectors say a semi-truck entered the Yermo, Calif. agricultural checkpoint from Nevada. The driver, Martin Madrid of Fontana, told a checkpoint inspector that
his truck was empty, but an inspection revealed the semi was full of empty beverage containers. DOJ’s Recycling Fraud Team was then notified and requested that the California Highway Patrol impound the semi for vehicle code violations, including expired registration. The DOJ Recycling Fraud Team executed a search warrant on Feb. 19 and seized 2,720 pounds of plastic and 6,560 pounds of aluminum from the truck. Cal Recycle personnel helped transport and process the materials, which, had they
been illegally redeemed for CRV in California, would have resulted in the hit of nearly $14,000 to the state’s beverage container recycling fund. Madrid was arraigned on recycling fraud charges at the San Bernardino Superior Court in Rancho Cucamonga on April. Califor nia’s Beverage Container Recycling and Litter Reduction Act incentivizes recycling through a CRV fee paid by California consumers at the time of purchase and refunded upon return of the empty containers. Since out-of-state
consumers never pay the fee, out-of-state containers are not eligible for CRV redemption. Cal Recycle aggressively combats fraud through enhanced training of recycling center owners, increased scrutiny of payment claims, daily load limits, and increased enforcement and inspection efforts with cooperation from California’s DOJ and CDFA’s agricultural checkpoints.
By Angela Monroe INDIAN WELLS -- A 17-yearold girl is recovering after being bitten by a rattlesnake while hiking in the valley. It happened Sunday at Mount Eisenhower in Indian Wells, that’s the back side of El Dorado Country Club. Concer ned residents emailed us after hearing about this, they’re worried about hiking safety during rattlesnake season. The teen is recovering after being sent to another hospital out of the valley. Cal Fire couldn’t tell us whether or not the teenager was on the trail when she was bitten on her right ankle. She was airlifted to a local hospital in serious condition. We spoke with a local doctor and hiking expert about the dangers of rattlesnakes. Rattlesnakes are a growing problem in the desert as it gets hotter.
“Usually from spring until the end of summer I’ll see about two or three a season.” Jason Bruecks hikes for a living, he’s the owner of Distance to be Traveled: hiking and outdoor adventures. He tells hikers to always stay on the trails, and be aware of their surroundings. “Keeping an eye on the trail itself, rattlesnakes do extremely well blending into their desert surroundings and many times people don’t see them and step right on them as they’re laying across the trail and sunbathing,” said Bruecks. Bruecks says if you are bitten stay calm to slow the spread of venom. “The faster the heart beats, the quicker that the poison goes through your body, and the main thing is call 9-1-1 and get help as quickly as possible,” said Bruecks. At Desert Regional Medical Center, emergency physician
Jeff Baker says in the summer he sees about two bite victims a month in his emergency room. “Sit down and rest, and not exert yourself further if possible, you would like to have the affected, usually it’s a limb that’s bitten, if possible keep it lower than your heart,” said Dr. Baker. It’s better to sit down and wait for help to come, and here
are some things not to do. “Don’t really recommend any tourniquet, any suctioning of the wound with any device, we don’t really recommend any type of chilling,” said Dr. Baker. So no ice, don’t try to suck out the venom and don’t try to trap the snake. “The people that are bitten is most commonly as a result of
picking the rattlesnake up,” said Dr. Baker. The Centers for Disease Control say of the about 7 to 8,000 people who get venomous bites a year in the U.S, and about five of those people die. The numbers are so low because of prompt medical care. Source KMIR

By Desert Star Staff HEMET, Ca. - Wildfire season is officially year-round in California. Fire officials presented a united front during “Wildfire Awareness Week” at the Hemet Ryan Air Attack Base to deliver a message about preparing and being ready for wildfires. Cal Fire says they’ve brought on resources sooner than ever because the more than fouryear drought has fire conditions extreme. Local, regional and state agencies say they’re ready for a tough fight and want everyone to do their part to prepare their home, make a plan and be ready in case they need to evacuate. PALM DESERT
By Desert Star Staff Palm Desert, CA – Four student directors plus four short one-act plays equals two unique nights of theatre at College of the Desert. Theatre majors are currently in rehearsals for what very well may be the most nerverattling component of the 2014 – 2015 season as four student directors prepare to present four

short one-act plays featuring fellow student cast members. This opportunity is truly a unique endeavor at College of the Desert and one that Assistant Professor of Theatre, Tres Dean, says is vital for any theatre program. “It is extremely important for theatre students to gain an understanding of the directing process, from conceptualization to
implementation”, says Dean. “These four one-acts, which vary in length from 10 to 20 minutes, are an enormous challenge for our students. They are completely in charge of every aspect of their show, which forces them to take responsibility for their choices.” “The directing process presents so many challenges,” says current theatre major and

It all has to go along with your (the director’s) vision. It’s a great training opportunity, tremendous challenge, and wonderful experience for us.” The One-Acts features the directing talents of first-time student directors Tish Lacy, Kelly McCool, Jasmin Carinio, and Catalin Stef. Mondary said that accepting the position was a bittersweet decision. “I love the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and the opportunities they have given me, and working for John McMahon is the highlight of my career. I would have only left for the ideal opportunity, and Desert Hot Springs provides me that opportunity. I look forward to continuing to build the Department in the direction that Chief Kirkpatrick and Chief Maynard started. Global Spotlight on Palm Springs Merci, Louis Vuitton!
The Bob & Delores Hope Estate Courtesy of The Body Deli/David Parker The Body Deli co-founder David Parker and singer/actress Selena Gomez Courtesy of The Body Deli/David Parker By Pam Price The global fashion media turned the spotlight on Palm Springs May 6th at 6:15 PM when Louis-Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH ) staged their Women’s Cruise 2016 show at the Bob and Dolores Hope Estate perched on high in the very private Southridge enclave. Currently for sale, the futuristic home was designed in 1973 to resemble a volcano, rising from the mountains and has been a landmark for decades. The site was selected by fashion designer Nicolas Ghesquiere, creative director of the house of Louis Vuitton. He was quoted as saying in Women Wear Daily, “ the Bob Hope is a symbolic landmark that has inspired me ever since I first saw it.” And it was here the resort runway show finally took place. David Parker and Margaret Skarin owners of the Body Deli on El Paseo and Hwy 111 both in Palm Desert were invited guests to the event providing customized VIP gifts for over 500 celebrities and VIPs.
The fashionable collections of products were placed in guestrooms to be seen when guests arrived. David Parker explained there were two collections, The Palm Springs Spa Collection featuring the body lotion, hand and body wash and body scrub spiked with indigenous Medjool Dates grown in the Coachella Valley. The Sprouted Mineral Greens Collection featured living hair, shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion. According to Mary Jo Ginther director of the Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism, 3,000 overnights at selected hotels were reserved for this event. There were 150 media from around the world attending although, in general local media were not invited. The Palm Springs Collection designed by The Body Deli was presented to actresses Catherine Deneuve and Michelle Williams, who serve as spokesmodels as well as Mr. Arnault, who accompanied them, along with rapper Kanye West, supermodel
Miranda Kerr and pop star Selena Gomez. David Parker said, “ following the fashion show guests were shuttled in black SUVs to a dinner, and after party staged at the Parker Le Meridien Hotel in Palm Springs. It was all organized with military precision, and when we arrived, the entire hotel was transformed into an arcade complete with crashing bumper cars, carnival games and, of course, French champagne. This was no longer a formal sit-down dinner in any sense of the word! This was a complete departure from the more formal fashion show which was staged around the swimming pool and far more serious.” According to www.Forbes.com Bernard Arnault, LVMH Chairman and CEO, is rated as #13 among the World’s Billionaires, #2 in France and is recognized as #59 on the Forbe’s List of The World’s Most Powerful People. It’s not surprising that within hours, Mr. Arnault told Mayor Steve Pougnet of Palm Springs that “Louis Vuitton’s Snapchat received 15 million views the

at 2 PM, at The Desert Rose Playhouse in Rancho Mirage. When it comes to portraying the essence of Carol Channing, few artists have had Nicky’s advantage. For several years Nicky was Miss Channing’s personal assistant, observing her personality up close and learning her mannerisms. Now Nicky gives us his take on one of the American Musical Theatre’s greatest artists as he performs Channing’s signature comedy routines and sings her legendary songs including “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend”, “I’m Just A Little Girl From Little Rock”, “Hello Dolly” and many, many more. Nicky’s performance is pure enjoyment for all ages. One of the
best aspects of Nicky-as-Carol is that everything performed is live - no lip-synching here! And, because of that, each show is unique and spontaneous based on the audience’s reactions. Nicky does such a good job of BEING Carol Channing - with physical mimicry, facial expressions, costumes, makeup and a spot-on recreation of Channing’s unique voice. When the curtain comes down, you have a wonderful warm sensation that you have just shared a part of Carol’s life. Nicky has brought Carol Channing to a national audience, working with celebrities including: Thea Gill from “Queer as Folk”, Lucie Arnaz, Ann Walker, Kaye

T R AV E L Switzerland – A Country of Unsurpassed Beauty and Refinement BY BEVERLY COHN
PART TWO:
PART 1 covered our fabulous stays at two of the Swiss Deluxe Hotels - the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace and the Park Hotel Wiggis - fun boat cruises, a tour of the Lavaux Vineyard Terraces, which included wine and cheese tastings, an exciting train ride on the Goldenpass Panorama coach, and some extraordinary dining experiences. Now to Part 2. DAY 4: After a rather full day yesterday, some of us kicked back in the morning and enjoyed the Park Hotel Weggis’ beautiful spa, the beach, or the pool. Later on, we were soon off on another fun adventure. We boarded the Mount Rigi Railway, followed by a scenic ride up the mountain on a gondola to Rigi-Kaltbad. When we reached that destination, we transferred to the first cogwheel railway of Europe, which took us up to Rigi-Klum, at the top of the mountain, where we experienced a breathtaking view of rolling hills and green fields dotted with crystal clear lakes. Sitting atop the mountain is the Rigi-Kulm Hotel, where we were treated to a salad with beets and corn, chicken with veggies, and a mouth-watering chocolate dessert. One amusing moment, and a reminder of my generation, was when one of the younger members of our group saw something on the wall and had no idea what it was. It was a pay telephone and we both had a good laugh. Fortified with a most
satisfying lunch, we were once again on the move and arrived in Vitznau where our luggage awaited us. We then embarked on a steamboat to Lucerne and on arrival, it was a short walk to the iconic Palace Luzern, the next fabulous 5-star hotel we were about to experience. The hotel, which reached the 100-year mark in 2006, is surrounded by a breathtaking Alpine storybook landscape, so just point your camera in any direction and shoot. A unique feature of this hotel is, in addition to featuring Tibetan spa treatments, it also houses the world’s first giant singing bowl based on smaller Tibetan versions. While either lying in a hammock or actually standing in the bowl, electrical pulses are emitted that flow through the body. Two members of our group tried it with very different experiences; one was elated and quite wired, while the other participant was extremely sleepy and a bit disoriented. Incidentally, Lucerne is the capital of the canton of Lucerne and is said to be the most important city in central Switzerland and is often referred to as the City of Lights. (Sorry Paris.) After a brief break, we had yet another fabulous dinner at Restaurant Des Balances located in the Hotel des Balances. The fare was outstanding, consisting of a U.S. beef filet in an olive crust, pralines with balsamic juice risotto with artichokes, and petite vegetables, with the finale a sinful dessert of raspberries, caramelized puff pastry, and vanilla cream with apricot yogurt ice cream. It’s a lucky thing we did lots of walking. DAY 5: Today we had a “light lunch” at the Palace Luzern comprised of pickled salmon with passion fruit dressing, mint salad and olive focaccia, followed by roasted saddle filet of lamb with sweet peppers puree and eggplant-goat cheese cannelloni. This scrumptious
Hotel Schweizerhof
meal was crowned with a trilogy of sorbets – Granny Smith apple, strawberry, and mango-passion fruit. To burn off some of those calories, we had a brief walking city tour where we saw the famous Chapel Bridge, which was built around 1300 and is said to be the oldest preserved wooden bridge in Europe. It also serves as a museum where 17th Century paintings are on display, surviving what could have been a devastating fire in August 1993. Our next train ride was to Bern, the Swiss capital, whose Old Town is an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Its premiere hotel for 150 years, the Hotel Schweizerhof is listed as one of The Leading Hotels of the World as well as a member of the coveted Swiss Deluxe Hotels and is the only 5-star superior hotel in Bern with a state-of-the-art spa. After check-in, an apéritif awaited us on the Sky Terrace, which offered a breathtaking 360-degree view of the city. With the wind stirring up the napkins, our snack consisted of taboule, baba ghanoush, and hummus,

accompanied by the appropriate wine pairing. We had to save a little room for dinner following this rooftop experience. Just when you thought the food couldn’t possibly get any better, here comes a meal truly fit for the gods in Jack’s Brasserie housed in the hotel. The decoration is quite spectacular and the service impeccable. The bill of fare consisted of mint risotto with crunchy goat cheese, and green pea puree. The dessert was simply listed as Dessert Variation “Schweizerhof,” but could have been described as a little bit of heaven on your plate. It must be said that dining in all these spectacular settings makes one feel like you’ve just stepped into a fairy tale and you are the fairy princess. Day 6: Breakfast served in Jack’s Brasserie offered a full range of food from eggs, hot or cold cereals, a fabulous assortment of breads, croissants, and brioche, various Swiss cheeses, or anything else your heart may desire. A walking tour was a perfect way to follow breakfast and off we went to explore Bern’s picturesque Old Town, framed by the Aare River with spectacular views of the Alps. A famous landmark is Bern’s 800-year old Zytglogge (Clock Tower), an astronomical clock, which sounds its bell every hour on the hour. Available only on a guided tour, you will walk up around the 130 winding, narrow steps leading up to the observation platform from which you feast your eyes on a stunning view of Old Town. Bern, whose name was derived from “bear,” also has Bern Bear Park, an enclosed sanctuary for bears that generates mixed reviews depending on your outlook. Part of the wonder of travel is the unexpected and one
such moment happened during a walking tour. A group of young men dressed in medieval costumes were gathered in a square and it turned out to be their version of a bachelor party. When I spoke to the groom, he said the festivities would continue all day into the evening. As far as his bride-to-be, he really didn’t want to know what form her “bachelorette” party would take but hopefully she will be having as much fun as he and his friends. The other serendipitous experience was when Switzerland beat Ecuador 2-1 in the 2014 FIFA World Cup games. Bern exploded in celebrations, with cars snaking through the streets honking their horns and waving the Swiss flag, which, by the way, is the only squareshaped national flag in the world. The joy was contagious and I felt really lucky to be able to bask in a proud moment for Switzerland. With so much to experience in Switzerland, you definitely owe it to yourself to put this trip as at the top of your Bucket List. Your travel agent or Swiss Tourism can help you plan a trip tailored to your specific needs. I assure you that once you visit Switzerland, with a population less than Manhattan, you’ll understand why it has earned the distinction of being a country of unsurpassed beauty and refinement. T H E AT R E & F I L M ‘Immediate Family’ at Taper— ‘Still Alice’ on DVD BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN
L-R: Cynda Williams, Bryan Terrell Clark and Kamal Angelo Bolden in Paul Oakley Stovall’s “Immediate Family,” directed by Phylicia Rashad, playing April 22 through June 7, 2015, at the CTG/Mark Taper Forum. “Immediate Family,” by playwright Paul Oakley Stovall, takes a comedic, yet sensitive look at the issues of gay marriage and racism in modern America. It is as up to date as tomorrow’s headlines as the play, like the Supreme Court, ponders the future of gay marriage in American society. Whether you are pro or con on the outcome, you can still enjoy Stovall’s take on the issue as he brings the Bryant family together for the upcoming wedding of their younger brother Tony (Kamal Angelo Bolden). Everyone is excited about Jesse Jr. (Bryan Terrell Clark) coming back to Chicago for the nuptuals since he has been living out of state for several years. But as the play progresses, we discover that Jesse, as well as Tony, have a few secrets that may be exposed before the wedding takes place. Add to the mix, Jesse’s childhood best friend and nextdoor neighbor, Nina Cole (J. Nicole Brooks), a flamboyant, outrageous lesbian and a very cool dresser. She may also come in handy when Kristian, Jessie’s
secret partner, shows up. Jessie knows they can’t bunk together in puritanical Evy’s house, so he convinces Nina to let Kristian stay in her house. At present, the family knows the young Swede only as Jessie’s friend who will be photographing the wedding for free. Stovall uses the family gettogether to spark conversations over controversial topics that have been hidden. It also surfaces issues about which family members are selectively judgmental. Being gay, for example, is one thing, but having a white partner is unacceptable. Jesse’s reply to brother Tony is: “He’s not white; he’s European.” While there is a lot of fastpaced comedy dialogue, the play is at its best when it talks about sensitive issues within the family. The specter of their late minister father, for example, is ever-present in a huge portrait of the Bryant parents hanging prominently in the living room. For Evy, morality is of prime importance in all things, including her class choices for black heroes. This is probably why she is not at all close to their half-

white sister Ronnie Hahn (Cynda Williams). Who reminds her of her father’s infidelity. The set, designed by John Iacovelli, conveys affluence, good taste and features windows on either side that let in a sense of the outdoors. The living room, kitchen, and outdoor patio area seen on stage are a dream even if the family dynamics inside aren’t as comforting. Phylicia Rashad (TVs “The Cosby Show”) directs. She also recently helmed August Wilson’s play “Joe Turners Come and Gone” at the Taper. Her TV sitcom experience works particularly well for “Immediate Family” as she keeps the many short scenes flowing seamlessly throughout the play which is presented without an intermission. As the play begins, we learn that the entire family will be staying with Evy Bryant Jerome, the judgmental older sister (Shaneshia Davis) who teaches black history with her own personal take on who should be included and excluded in her lectures. She also has her own personal opinion on who should be included in the upcoming
wedding. It’s obvious she loves both of her brothers, but Jesse Jr. is her favorite, despite his long absence from any family events. It soon becomes clear that conflict will erupt when Jesse’s roommate and partner, Kristian (Mark Jude Sullivan) shows up for wedding “Immediate Family,” at the Mark Taper Forum, 135 North Grand, downtown LA, through June 7, 2015. For tickets call (213) 628-2772 or online at CenterTheatreGroup.org.

Actress Julianne Moore won a well-deserved Oscar for her moving performance in Sony Pictures “Still Alice.” In the film, she portrays Alice Howland, a happily married woman with three grown children. She also has a career as a renowned linguistics’ professor at a prestigious university. Her life changes dramatically when she receives a diagnosis of earlyonset Alzheimer’s disease. Alice struggles valiantly to stay connected with the person she once was, but the progression of her disease places

Restaurant to include private dining room, expanded gathering spaces
PALM DESERT, CA -Stone Eagle Golf Club, already one of the premier golf experiences in the Coachella Valley, recently broke ground on a state-of–the art facility that will include a fullservice restaurant, private indoor and outdoor dining areas, a wine room, multiple fire pits and open spaces for receptions and live entertainment. The new restaurant, designed by noted architect Guy Dreier, will remain on the existing site but will occupy a much larger footprint, doubling the current occupancy load and increasing square footage from 1,600 to 4,600. Overseeing the restaurant, The Aerie, is Executive Chef Jon Tice, formerly of The Saguaro and protégé of Iron Chef Jose Garces. The entire project is due to be completed by mid-November 2015, just in time for season.

Americans Becoming less Christian, more Secular By Rachel Zoll AP Religion Writer NEW YORK (AP) - The number of Americans who don’t affiliate with a particular religion has grown to 56 million in recent years, making the faith group researchers call “nones” the second-largest in total numbers behind evangelicals, according to a Pew Research Center study released Tuesday. Christianity is still the dominant faith by far in the U.S.; 7 in 10 Americans identify with the tradition. However, the ranks of Christians have declined as the segment of people with no religion has grown, the survey says. Between 2007 and 2014, when Pew conducted two major surveys of U.S. religious life, Americans who described themselves as atheist, agnostic or of no particular faith grew from 16 percent to nearly 23 percent. At the same time, Christians
dropped from about 78 percent to just under 71 percent of the population. Protestants now comprise 46.5 percent of what was once a predominantly Protestant country. Researchers have long debated whether people with no religion should be defined as secular since the category includes those who believe in God or consider themselves “spiritual.” But the new Pew study found increasing signs of secularism. Last year, 31 percent of “nones” said they were atheist or agnostic, compared to 25 percent in 2007, and the percentage who said religion was important to them dropped. Greg Smith, Pew’s associate research director, said the findings “point to substantive changes” among the religiously unaffiliated, not just a shift in how people describe themselves. Secular groups have become increasingly
organized to counter bias against them and keep religion out of public life through lawsuits and lobbying lawmakers. The growth of “nones” has political significance as well. People with no religion tend to vote Democratic, just as white evangelicals tend to vote Republican. The Pew study found a slight drop - about 1 percent - in the evangelical share of the population, which now comprises a quarter of Americans. But the overall number of evangelicals rose to about 62 million people. Pew researchers said Christian losses were driven by decreases among mainline, or liberal, Protestants and Roman Catholics. Mainline Protestants declined by about 5 million to 36 million between 2007 and 2014. Pew found 13 percent of U.S. adults are former Catholics. The study put the number of Catholic adults
at 51 million, or just over one-fifth of the U.S. population, a drop of about 3 percent over seven years. In 2007, Catholics made up about one-quarter of Americans. However, Pew researchers acknowledge those conclusions differ from those of some other major studies that found only slight declines or even a slight uptick in the numbers of Catholics in the last couple of years. Georgetown University’s Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate, which tracks American Catholicism, puts the U.S. adult Catholic population at 61 million. Regarding other religions, Pew found an increase in membership of non-Christian faiths, driven mainly by growing numbers of Muslims and Hindus. Despite the increase, their numbers remain small. Muslims and Hindus each comprise less than 1 percent of the U.S. population. The number of Jews
rose slightly over the period, from 1.7 percent to 1.9 percent of Americans. Overall, religious groups have become more ethnically diverse along with the broader population. Latinos now comprise one-third of U.S. Roman Catholics, although fewer U.S. Latinos identify as Catholic overall. One-quarter of evangelicals and 14 percent of mainline Protestants are racial minorities. Membership in historically black churches has remained relatively stable over the period. The survey of 35,000 people, titled “America’s Changing Religious Landscape,” was conducted in English and Spanish from June 4 through Sept. 30 of last year and has a margin of error of plus or minus 0.6 percentage points. Mayor Steve Pougnet Announces He’s Not Running for Reelection By KMIR News Staff PALM SPRINGS, Ca. - Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet will not seek re-election and plans to step down when his term ends in December, according to an open letter posted on his campaign website, electpougnet.com. In the letter, which is dated Wednesday, Pougnet wrote that he is leaving because he had accomplished all he had set out to do, but acknowledged what he called recent ``speculation and innuendo’’ over the propriety of
his relationship with developer Richard Meaney. The Desert Sun newspaper reported today that Pougnet admitted making a mistake by casting a Dec. 3 vote to approve the sale of a 29,185-square-foot piece of land, called the Casa Del Camino property, to Meaney and another investor. According to the newspaper, Pougnet earned $100,000 a year in 2013 and 2014 to work as a consultant for Union Abbey, a firm founded and run by Meaney.
Pougnet quit the consulting job last month, amid questions from the media, and said he recused himself from important, closed-session discussions about the land sale and should have done the same with the consent calendar vote to approve it, The Desert Sun reported. In his letter, Pougnet said accusations about his ``integrity as your mayor’’ have come from a ``handful of politically motivated detractors.’’ Source KMIR
Picasso painting sells for $179M; Giacometti sculpture $141M
Auctioneer Jussi Pylkkanen takes bids on Pablo Picasso’s Women of Algiers (Version O), which sold for nearly $179.4 million (AP Photo/Kathy Willens) By Deepti Hajela And Ula Ilnytzky Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) - A vibrant, multi-hued painting from Pablo Picasso set a world record for artwork at auction, selling for $179.4 million on Monday, and a sculpture by Alberto Giacometti set a record for most expensive sculpture, at $141.3 million. 20th century Christie’s offered in a curated sale titled “Looking Forward to the Past.” Christie’s global president, Jussi Pylkkanen, who was the auctioneer, said the two pieces are outstanding works of art. “I’ve never worked with two such beautiful objects,” he said. The Picasso price, $179,365,000, and the Giacometti price, $141,285,000, included the auction house’s premium. The buyers elected to
remain anonymous. Overall, 34 of 35 lots sold for an auction total of $706 million. Experts say the high sale prices were driven by artworks’ investment value and by wealthy collectors seeking out the very best works. “I don’t really see an end to it, unless interest rates drop sharply, which I don’t see happening in the near future,” dealer Richard Feigen said. Impressionist and modern May 13, 2015
artworks continue to corner the market because “they are beautiful, accessible and a proven value,” added Sarah Lichtman, a professor of design history and curatorial studies at The New School. “I think we will continue to see the financiers seeking these works out as they would a blue chip company that pays reliable dividends for years to come,” she said. “Women of Algiers,” once owned by American collectors Victor and Sally Ganz, was inspired by Picasso’s fascination with 19th-century French artist Eugene Delacroix. It’s part of a 15-work series Picasso created in 1954-55 designated with the letters A through O. It has appeared in several major museum retrospectives of the Spanish artist. The most expensive artwork sold at auction had been Francis Bacon’s “Three Studies of Lucian Freud,” which Christie’s sold for $142.4 million in 2013. “Pointing Man,” depicting a skinny 5-foot-high bronze figure
with extended arms, had been in the same private collection for 45 years. Giacometti made six casts of the work; four are in museums, and the others are in private hands and a foundation collection. His “Walking Man I” had held the auction record for a sculpture: $104.3 million in 2010. Other highlights at Christie’s included Peter Doig’s “Swamped,” a 1990 painting of a canoe in a moonlit lagoon, which sold for almost $26 million, a record for the British artist. Claude Monet’s “The Houses of Parliament, At Sunset,” a lush painting of rich blues and magenta created in 1900-01, sold for $40.5 million. Christie’s also had a Mark Rothko for sale. “No. 36 (Black Stripe),” which had never appeared at auction, also sold for $40.5 million. The 1958 work was sold by German collector Frieder Burda, who exhibited it in his museum in Baden-Baden for several years. Source KMIR

By Dan Marinelli Palm Springs – Now that Coachella and Stagecoach have passed, it is time for Splash House to take over the desert for a third year. Just like 2014, Splash House, the poolside electronic music festival will take over three hotel pools in downtown Palm
Springs. Last year, Chromeo, A-trak, Flume, Bixel Boys, Cut Copy and more attracted thousands to the Hacienda Cantina and Beach Club, The Saguaro and The Hard Rock. On the weekends of June 13-14 and August 8-9, Splash House returns to rock the beautiful people of Southern
California at the chicly decorated aforementioned venues. This year, however, the Hard Rock Hotel will be replaced with the Palm Springs Hilton. Splash House was one of the desert’s best events last year and this year’s edition will just as much fun in the sun. Tickets are still on sale at $115$for one
weekend. Splash House is also providing hotel and ticket packages starting at $180 a person. For more information, go to www.splashhouse.com or visit
Splash House on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
By Gloria Rodrìguez KMIR is proud to sponsor a golf tournament May 20th at Bighorn Golf Club in Palm Desert to benefit Roy’s Resource Center in Palm Springs. The homeless center was named after the late Riverside County Supervisor Roy Wilson. Kathi Zeigler and her dog, Bella, lived in an SUV at the Palm Springs Walmart parking lot for two days. “It wasn’t nice,” Zeigler said. “It was embarrassing. But I had to sleep somewhere.” The 56-year-old used to work in real estate but she and her service dog, Bella, became homeless after a bad housing situation. “I had a five bedroom house and a nanny and raised two children all by myself and was successful and thinking oh my goodness I
can’t believe this happened,” she said. “I’ve seen so many homeless people and I am now the face of homelessness.” Zeigler was one of nearly 2,500 homeless individuals in Riverside County this year, according to county figures. Roy’s Desert Resource Center in Palm Springs became home to Zeigler and Bella for two months
until she found affordable housing in Yucca Valley. The center also helped 63-year-old veteran James Bayne. The retired roofer lived at Roy’s for three months. Like Zeigler, he found himself on the street after he couldn’t afford an apartment by himself. “Everything was going good,” Bayne said. “At my age I never
thought this would happen to me but it does. It happens to anybody. Unfortunately a lot of us live from check to check.” The homeless shelter can accommodate 90 individuals each night. Roy’s offers courses and services to teach self-sufficiency and find housing. Bayne benefited from those courses.
“It got me to put my future in front of me and not think it’s always going to be given to me, any situation that I have to take control of my life,” Bayne said. The Friend’s of Roy’s Foundation is holding a golf tournament May 20th at Bighorn Golf Club. To register: http://www.forfdc. com Source KMIR

Rotary Math Field Day 2015 A Success!
First Place Winners INDIO, CA – The Indio Rotary Club is proud to announce the winners of the 2015 Rotary Math Field Day for Middle School Children of the Coachella Valley. This year’s successful event took place on Saturday, May 2 at John Glenn Middle School. RMFD celebrated its 21st anniversary focusing on achievements in mathematics by Coachella Valley Middle School students. RMFD began in 1995 when then Indio Rotary Club President and current County Supervisor John Benoit found that due to transportation and travel issues and lack of funds in education for extra-curricular activities, Coachella Valley students were not participating in the Riverside Math Field Day. Through his leadership, the Indio Rotary Club stepped up and organized this event, with the assistance of other area
Second Place Winners Rotary Clubs and the business community, to provide our local students the chance to participate in such a competition. This year’s event featured 300 students coming from 11 schools representing Palm Springs Unified School District, Desert Sands Unified School District, Coachella Valley Unified School District as well as Palm Valley private school. Competition was by grade level featuring sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. Each student competed in both a math event as well as a math game. Students competed for individual scores as well as by school. Awards were given out to the winners by grade for each math event and math game. Overall school awards were given out by grade level. The Top Mathematician Awards went to the top overall student at each grade level. In
all, these students presented 100 Awards and Prizes for outstanding mathematical work. (Full Winners List attached) Special Guest during the RMFD Awards Ceremony was Dr. Pamela Clute, Special Assistant to the Chancellor and Mathematics Professor at the University of California, Riverside. She is also Executive Director of the Academy of Learning through Partnerships for Higher Achievement Center at UCR. Her presentation centered on how mathematics is at the center of so many of
our sciences and everyday life. The students were amazed how everyday things they may take for granted is rooted in the world of mathematics. A special quiz was held at the end of her presentation with Dr Clute handing out stuffed teddy bears to attentive students with correct answers. Dr Clute was a huge hit for both the students and the parents in attendance. “This event was created to promote math as a fun subject. You can’t help be get inspired by the hard work, competitive spirit, and outstanding results shown
by all our young participants” reported current Indio Rotary President Steve Morgan. Martha Mendez, Chairwoman of RFMD for the Indio Rotary Club said, “There is high emphasis on student athletics as opposed to academics at times. This program takes the competition from the field into the classroom. This event helps fill the void and reaffirms to students that academics are very important and worthy of recognition. We help our MATHALETES excel.”
