California’s biggest Country Music Festival attracted fans from around the globe Story and Photos by Pat Krause It’s hard to believe that this is the 9th Stagecoach event, and that it has become one of the topmost country music festivals in the U.S. The event brings in the highest country stars along with stars from yesteryear and stars from a diverse type of music for all to enjoy. That is what makes this

event so different from other festivals, the diversity of the music. Country, Blue Grass with fiddles, Harmonicas and accordions, Country rock and even some rock and pop performers. Music for all as stage areas was filled for some of the most well known stars. They just announced the top entertainer of the year,

Miranda Lambert, stole the show with her songs, ‘Short Shorts’ and ‘Lace Nylons’. She showed why she was chosen as the entertainer of the year. Miranda was the headliner for Saturday, and she followed Justin Moore and Dierks Bentley that had the crowd wanting more. Friday night’s performers were Jake Owen

One Night Only Concert

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The One Night Only Concert at the McCallum Theatre on April 22nd was everything that a music lover could want. Host and producer of the show, Michael Childers, brought the Best of Broadway singers to the Stage. The theme this year was ‘Back to the Sixties’ with music from that era. Honorary chairs were Annette Bloch, Helene Galen, Barbara Keller and Harold Matzner with Event cochairs Barbara Fromm and Terri Ketover, who make this event possible. The presenting sponsor was again Well Fargo, and the concert benefited Jewish Family Services of the Desert. The singers included TV stars; Emmy and Tony award winners; Broadway stars, teen idols, songwriters and producers and even an American Idol finalist. What a line-up of talent who performed for another sold-out concert. The event has proven in its 10 years to bring one of the most versatile and talented groups of entertainers to our Desert. This is the only place you can see this kind of talent

in one place and in one theatre in ‘One Night Only’ as the name tells it all. Some of the most notable names were Teen Idol Lou Christie, Liz Callaway and her sister Ann Hampton Callaway, Loretta Devine, the famous Mary Wilson and our own local celebrity Lucie Arnaz. The final performance was by Chairs - Barbara Fromm, Barbara Keller, Helene Galen, Michael Childers, American Idol, Jacob Annette Bloch, Terri Ketover and Harold Matzner Lusk singing Aquarians/ Let The Sunshine In, while young dancers in flower children costumes danced through the audience. All the performers then appeared on stage to sing along. The stage was literally filled with singers, and next producer Michael Childers came on stage to give his final bow to the audience. Another fantastic One-Night Only concert that raised a lot of money for Jewish Family Services that serve Coachella Valley people in need with numerous programs. Story and Photos by Pat Krause Helen Galen and Jamie Kabler held a One Night Only Pre-concert Party at the home of Helene Galen on April 21st, the night before the big concert at the McCallum Theatre. The party is held for guests, supporters and entertainers to get to know each other. Appetizers along with Pizza, hot dogs and desserts where Ice Cream treats straight from an ice cream cart vendor were a novel menu for the night that was enjoyed by all. The High

School band arrived on the lawn opposite the pool to play to while Helene Galen directed from the poolside for a fun event. The night continued with impromptu performances by Ann Hampton Callaway and her sister Liz Callaway. They started the entertainment that was continued by many of the other attending artists who sang for a couple of hours to end the night. This party has become a big part of the One-Night Only event.

of Rome, Greece and Etruria. At this time, you can view these two captivating exhibits revealing facets of lifestyle and tastes reflecting the culture and lifestyle enjoyed during the Roman Empire. Began by viewing a remarkable exhibit of 90piece giltsilver objects of art, such as ornamental vessels and statuettes discovered by a French farmer plowing his field in 1830. Expertly restored they are on loan from the Cabinet des Medailles at the Bibliotheque National de France. A cache of gold jewelry, from gem-encrusted bracelets to necklaces worn by the ladies of the Roman Empire adds to the drama of this exhibit. Kenneth Lapatin, associate curator of antiquities at the J. Paul Getty Museum said, in the Los Angeles Times that “precious stones in antiquity were valued more than gold and silver,” adding that they were sourced from conquered territories and thought to create “an aura of magical powers.” Equally enlightening is the exhibit, Dangerous Perfection: Funerary Vases from Southern Italy, representing a six year collaboration on “investigating and conserving the monumental vases on view.” Listening to David Saunders, the associate curator of antiquities at the J. Paul Getty Museum explains the painstaking process of restoration is a story unto itself. Determining the forensic techniques involved in verifying

STAGECOACH 2015 Continued from Page 1 the alternative types of music and many newcomers that are making a name for themselves in music, Balsam Range, Hot Rize; Steve Earle and Devil Makes Three to name just a few. There is so much more to

do and see at Stagecoach. There is the Honkytonks where people can hear new musicians, and DJs perform where they can also dance. The vendors were so numerous with a variety of foods offered, Clothes to buy, Hats and

cowboy gear, Tattoos parlors with the real and fake variety, a place to make a personal teeshirt and much more. There were water stations, shade areas and charging stations for cell phones and hay bales for people to sit and rest. It’s no wonder tickets sell out so fast for this event.

STAGECOACH ON THE PALOMINO STAGE By Robert Kinsler Since the initial Stagecoach was staged in Indio in 2007; the country music event has grown in popularity attracting fans from around the globe who came to soak in the sun, fun, and plenty of country, Americana and rock ‘n’ roll music featured on a number of stages positioned around the Empire Polo Club. This year the event once again offered an outstanding mix of up-and-comers; modern-day hit makers and legendary veteran artists. Here is a rundown of my favorite performances. Friday, April 24 Lindi Ortega was the first performer to take the stage at Stagecoach, hitting the Palomino Stage at 1 p.m. on Friday. No worries. The Nashville-based singer performed a number of wonderful songs, including the memorable country ballad “Cigarettes & Truckstops.” The Lone Bellow performed the single most artistically arresting set I caught all weekend at Stagecoach. The trio mixed up country, folk, bluegrass and indie rock in a 50-minute powerhouse performance, including the soaring “Then Came The Morning” and the anthemic “Green Eyes and a Heart of Gold.” Sturgill Simpson impressed a big crowd at Coachella the previous weekend, so it’s no surprise. He attracted a similarly-large audience to see him perform at the Palomino for a 45-minute set featuring his modern-edged take on traditional country music highlighted by versions of “Long White Line” and “Living the Dream” off his latest album “Metamodern Sounds in Country Music.” Merle Haggard, now 78, is one of the country music’s most beloved living legends. His

performance inside a packed Palomino Tent was highlighted by emotional takes on timeless classics, including “Mama Tried,” “Silver Wings,” “If I Could Only Fly” and the big sing-along “Okie From Muskogee.” Saturday, April 25 Tr a d i t i o n a l i s t D a n i e l Romano took the stage early-on Saturday, and those who caught his impressive 35-minute set will long remember his ability to mine the sonic territory first mined by the late Gram Parsons and celebrated here with a set of strong original songs. Nikki Lane was one of a number of young artists who impressed throughout the 3-day event. I caught her second performance staged on the Toyota TRD Pro Stage. Her authentic soprano was used in the service of striking outlaw country music gems, including “Man Up,” and “Sleep With a Stranger.” Nashville-based duo John & Jacob impressed from the moment that started performing on the big Mane Stage. With harmonies recalling the Everly Brothers and Dave Clark Five, “Ride With Me” and a cover of the aforementioned Everly Brothers “Wake Up Little Susie” highlighted the newcomer’s 35-minute set. Capping off an especially strong day of performances, both the legendary Gregg Allman and ZZ Top delivered sets that extended beyond their greatest hits (although the audience got all of those), and the performances each served to celebrate the unique careers of both groundbreaking artists. Sunday, April 26 Nashville provided more than its share of artists at this year’s Stagecoach, which amounted to a good thing. Singer-songwriter Andrew Combs performed a style of

Americana root’s rock that blended Jayhawks-styled tunefulness with Neil Young country folk. Highlights included the infectious “Foolin’” complete with three-part harmonies, and the beautiful “Please, Please, Please.” Logan Brill could well be one of the next big things in country music. The young singer - already a master at performing contemporary country - was especially expert when singing a potent Andrew Combs - Nashvilleversion of Dolly Parton’s classic Stagecoach on Sunday, Apr “Jolene.” Classic Southern rock outfit Outlaws unleashed rousing versions of the band’s bestknown songs, including a breezy “There Goes Another Love Song” and a 12-minute blistering version of “Green Nikki Lane - Country music singer-guitarist Nikki Lane was showGrass & High Tides.” The cased during two performances at Stagecoach on Saturday, April band also thrilled with the 25. Photo by Robert Kinsler fiery closer “ (Ghost), Riders in the Sky.” Eric Burdon and the Animals brought their unique and enduring style of classic-rock John & Jacob thrilled blending blues, Photo by Robert Kin psychedelic rock and R&B to the Palomino Stage, offering up one classic after another to the delight of an enthusiastic crowd. The opener “Don’t Bring Me Down,” a reworked (and reggae-tinged) “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” hard rocking “It’s My Life” and bluesstyled take on “The House of the Rising Miranda Lambert. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. DVL Softball Season Down to Wire LA QUINTA – Just six games remain for the Desert Valley League-leading La Quinta Blackhawks softball team but the season is far from over. The Blackhawks (6-0 DVL, 12-0 Overall) have not had a traditional, run-through-theschedule, 20-plus-win type of season in 2015 that has become the yearly norm at La Quinta High School. Yet, with true hearts of champions, DeDe Grutz’ girls are still, narrowly in first place with an undefeated DVL record. La Quinta has a gimme against the last-place Xavier Prep Saints (0-8 DVL, 1-14 Overall) this week (Tuesday * and Friday). Next week, the Blackhawks have another gift on the schedule, the

sixth-place Cathedral City Lions (2-6 DVL, 10-10 Overall) before setting up series with the rival Palm Desert Aztecs to decide the league champions. The Aztecs (7-1 DVL, 6-16 Overall) road to the final series with La Quinta is not as easy as the Blackhawks. Palm Desert head coach James Serven’s squad has only two games before the matchup with the seventime defending DVL champion Blackhawks – against the hungry, second-place Coachella Valley Arabs. The Aztecs were undefeated and cruising in league, up until a 9-8 upset last week to the struggling Indio Rajahs knocked Palm Desert off its month-long

pedestal. The Aztecs were leading 8-6 heading into the seventh and final inning of the game. After closing the gap with a run to make it 8-7, Janay Garcia hit a clutch, two-run single to win the game, 9-8, in walk-off fashion. “Both teams battled and never gave up,” Coach Serven said in an interview. “It was a very exciting game and congrats to Indio. Now, if Coachella Valley sweeps this week, the Aztecs will have virtually no shot at the DVL title, figuring La Quinta takes care of business against Xavier Prep and Cathedral City. A split would guarantee a tie for first with the Blackhawks.
