B.B. King dies at 89 By Carolyn W. Gaines B.B. King died last Thursday at home in Las Vegas. Shirley King his daughter said,”The Thrill Is Not Gone.” John Fudenbeg, the coroner of Clark County, Nevada, said the cause was a series of small strokes attributable to Type 2 diabetes. The King of Blues who was in hospice care, had been in poor health since House of Blues October tour date. B.B. King canceled his tour due to

dehydration and exhaustion stemming from the diabetes. Blues icon B.B. King spread joy to billions by giving them the blues. The prestigious musician, along with his real love of his life ‘Lucille’ his guitar, spent 70 years keeping blues alive to the world. He learned as a povertystricken youth in the Mississippi Delta how to thrill his audiences. King exceeded 15,000 shows non-stop touring. The Blues master B.B. out lives his tour

PALM DESERT, Calif. — As instructor Robert Cupp watched his psychology statistics class begin its midterm exam, the door to the classroom opened and in walked Cal State San Bernardino President Tomás D. Morales accompanied by about 16 others. The longtime instructor said he initially thought it was an intrusion. “I’m giving a midterm, please leave,” he said to himself. But Morales was undeterred.

He smiled at Cupp’s students. “Based on your feedback, student feedback, and of course, Bob’s colleagues, Bob is the recipient of the second annual Outstanding Lecturer of the Year award here at CSUSB,” Morales told them. The students, many of them still surprised at the intrusion and anxious about the midterm, applauded Cupp. They were experiencing a CSUSB tradition: The president,

accompanied by previous award winners, faculty colleagues and administrators, all barge into the class of the winning instructor, and the president makes the announcement to the instructor’s students. “This is a wonderful, wonderful CSUSB tradition. Bob has just an outstanding excellent record of teaching,” Morales told the students.

Change brings on many new considerations

By Janice Gough Many baby boomers are uncertain about how to prepare for retirement and life changes and need formal financial advice.

Surprisingly, many individuals have not calculated how much they will need for retirement, nor do they know how to calculate this amount. And, for women in particular, the need for advice is especially important. A lifetime of lower earnings due to wage discrimination, absence from the labor market due to childbirth and care giving, and jobs that are less likely to have employer sponsored retirement plans all take their toll on women’s savings. Elderly divorced, widowed, and never-married women are especially at risk of poverty during retirement. While senior consumers will undoubtedly have many different financial goals depending on their age, Financial position, health, and family situation, there are several common goals that most seniors share, including: • ensuring that assets continue to grow and generate sufficient income to last a lifetime; • protecting savings

round-the-clock care. Should they quit their jobs and move home to care for a parent or should they try to find a caregiver or assisted living center? Will they have to financially support a parent as he or she gets older? Other life changes, such as the death of a spouse, can cause emotional upheaval, and reduced attention spans, cause insomnia, and other physical complaints. Financial professionals should be alert to these symptoms and, if warranted, involve an adult child or trusted relative in any financial discussions with their client. Divorce can also cause significant financial challenges, triggering contentious battles over pensions, assets, and estate plans. Clients who remarry later in life may struggle with harmonizing their financial resources and providing inheritances for children and grandchildren from a first marriage. These are just a few of the many life changes that senior clients might face. Other potential changes

might include a move to a different residence or community, change in financial resources and/or stability, disability, the onset of a chronic illness, caregiver stress from taking care of a family member, the need to have home health care for the first time and even the death of a pet. Each will produce a certain amount of stress. Financial professionals who are aware of these issues will be in the best position to offer comprehensive assistance and to make referrals to other professionals when warranted.

HOA monthly fees to a lockbox in Yucca Valley. Several of my neighbors and I have discussed this and wonder if this is normal. What about our fees going to a lockbox? Your advice in this matter would be greatly appreciated by all of us! T.W, Placentia

is essentially a post office box maintained by the bank which is cleared every day so checks are deposited in a timely manner. This speeds up the availability of funds to the HOA and also provides a far more accurate method of assessment processing, thus minimizing posting errors. Most banks which specialize in HOA assessment processing provide a lockbox service which is typically linked in real time to the management company’s billing system, so that any homeowner queries can be immediately answered. Lockbox processing is the way to go and you should not be concerned at all about this accounting process.” Russell Hoffman, President of Valencia Management Group, concurred with Mr. Davidoff, stating: “Yes this is normal. Using a lock box from the banking institution where your association has the operating account provides an extra layer of security, as the management company never handles those checks. Other advantages include improved cash flow for the association as the funds are available quicker, and there is very little chance of checks being misplaced or lost.” Mike Packard, Senior Vice President with Associa, noted “Many of our branches use lockbox payment systems to process association payments. Payments from our clients go directly to the financial institution. This saves time in processing and adds a level of protection as there are fewer people who actually handle the payment. Ensuring that our client funds are protected is one of the most important functions we perform for our managed communities.”

Isaiah Henry, President of Seabreeze Management Company, said: “Without a lockbox system, a homeowner would send their payment to their management company and the manager would then post the payment to the homeowner’s account and then forward the payment to the bank. This process could take a few days to complete. With a lockbox system, a homeowner mails their payment directly to the bank lockbox. The bank will process the payment and that payment is downloaded into the management company’s accounting system at the end of each day.” T.W., based on the input from these management company presidents, it appears that lockboxes help communities in several ways. By “cutting out the middle man”, the lockbox adds speed and accuracy to the process, making sure your assessment payments get to the association’s general fund account more quickly. I hope this information puts you and your neighbors’ minds at ease. Thanks for your question (and thanks to Messrs. Davidoff, Hoffman, Packard and Henry for their helpful input!). Changing financial attitudes may shift during this stage of life. While attitudes and behaviors will vary, some generalizations can be made. For example, many seniors desire low- or no-risk investment products as well as low-cost and low-maintenance plans. Son Speaks with KMIR about Missing Couple

By Kitty Alvarado LA QUINTA -- The son of a couple missing since Mother’s Day is speaking out. The La Quinta resident says he and his family have not lost hope of finding them. “It’s getting harder and harder.” Robert Acosta says this has been a tough time for his family and it’s only getting worse as more days go by without news of his missing parents. Cecil “Paul” Knutson and Dianna Bedwell live in Anaheim but went missing after visiting Valley View Casino in Valley Center. They never showed up to their son Robert’s home in La Quinta

for a Mother’s Day gathering. These are the last images captured of the couple on casino surveillance cameras. While there have been more volunteers he says it’s hard to pinpoint where to look. “The main thing is to utilize all those resources and focus in the correct area and the challenge is is knowing where that correct area is,” said Robert. Robert says his family is grateful to volunteers who have helped in the search, he says they even showed up to search in the rain. “It was raining really bad and of course it was a weekday but that didn’t stop us,” said Robert. There have been no updates

from the San Diego Sheriff’s Department. He says department did give him some information but he can’t disclose it, “they’ve asked me to keep that information private so that’s what I’m doing.” Robert says has no doubt he will find his parents and they will have that Mother’s Day celebration that never happened. “We’re going to find them, we’re going to bring them home and we’re going to have that BBQ and I’m going to give my mom that Mother’s Day card,” said Robert. The family has set up a Facebook page and a GoFundMe account to offer up a reward. Source KMIR

By Desert Star Staff PALM DESERT, CA—The annual graduation ceremony on May 22, beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Boone Field, located on the Palm Desert Campus, is the highlight of the year for College of the Desert’s (COD) faculty, staff and especially the students. The evening is filled with color and pageantry, short speeches, and the traditional caps and gowns and distribution of hard-earned diplomas and certificates. Over 1,000 students have completed the required coursework for graduation

The college added more sections of high-demand courses this Spring semester resulting in a larger number of students completing their programs. More than 240 certificates have been earned in the past year. Many

students have earned more than one. In addition to the students, a large number of faculty and staff attend the ceremony, and the college continues to have crowds of 1,700 observers turn out to cheer on family members and friends who are graduating. We love our grass quite a bit particularly my wife, she loves probably more than I do but nevertheless, if you look around you’ll see almost everybody has nice green grass although they are starting to change to a desert scene,” said Sardella. He understands the drought is changing attitudes about what a front yard should look like in California, but says lifestyle changes don’t come easy. One of his neighbors across the street says she’s ready to make the change from grass to desertscape. She feels tougher regulations are coming, and she wants to stay ahead of them. “The pressure I think is from within, I just feel we live in the desert and now that we’re in the midst of a drought we really need to be more conservative in what we do,” said Peggy Crown of Palm Desert. Ron’s other neighbor has recently converted his turf to desertscape he says he’s seen a 60 percent drop in his water bill, and he’s happy with the change. “Well, it makes me feel good, very good about it because of saving the water and saving the labor,” said Palm Desert resident, Nick Conti. That means that your opinion of his teaching really does count.” Along with the honor, Cupp will receive a $1,000 faculty development grant and will be recognized at the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the Palm Desert Campus commencement ceremonies, and also at the end of the year faculty recognition ceremonies, Morales said. Later, Cupp said he was” humbled” by the award. “You have to understand that the department of psychology has a history of outstanding teaching,” he said. Teaching “is part of us. The bar is set especially high, so if you’re going to be here, you have to be that, you have to teach. It’s God’s work.” Cupp’s students praised him, calling him “one of the finest instructors in the psychology department,” according to Yuchin Chien, a professor and associate chair in the department. In a letter supporting Cupp’s

nomination, Chien wrote that Cupp “has been consistently rated as a very passionate, knowledgeable, well-organized, responsible, and fun instructor.” One of Cupp’s students wrote in the ratings that Cupp “is one of the best professors I’ve ever had. He takes the time to really make sure everyone understands the material and have very creative ideas to teach this subject.” Another student added, “His instructions are really good and fun! He makes you want to come to class. I love his enthusiasm with his work.” The award evaluation committee wrote in their nominating letter that Cupp “is to be commended for the contributions he is making to the psychology department and the students it serves. He works tirelessly at teaching and holds his students to a demanding but appropriate academic standard. They are appreciative of his efforts, enthusiastic about his classes, and devoted to his style of teaching.” Cupp was also praised for his work at the university’s Palm Desert Campus, where he serves as the psychology department’s

faculty representative and faculty adviser to psychology students, helping them make and meet their academic and career plans. Robert Ricco, chair of the university’s psychology department said Cupp has “been a champion for first-generation college students from the desert for years, recruiting students from high schools in the area … and organizing student clubs, advising, and particularly connecting students from the PDC with faculty here on our campus. Cupp joined the faculty after receiving his master’s degree in 1989, when he was hired as an adjunct faculty member. Since that time he has taught a wide variety of psychology and social sciences courses at both the San Bernardino and the Palm Desert campuses In September, 2006, Cupp was promoted to full-time lecturer. In addition to his teaching, Cupp has assumed several important service positions providing

significant and valuable services to the psychology department at both campuses. As Morales and the other visitors began exiting Cupp’s classroom, one of his students said she was startled at first, but understood about the attention given to her instructor. “He’s fantastic,” said Kimberly Carlos. “I’m not surprised at all.” For more information about the CSUSB Palm Desert Campus, contact Mike Singer in the campus’s Office of Public Affairs at 760-341-2883, ext. 78107 or e-mail msinger@csusb. edu or visit the campus website at www.pdc.csusb.edu. www.desertstarweekly.com

James Schnepf, a photographer began his “Palm Springs Project” in 2010 after purchasing a home designed by architect William Krisel, A.I.A. He shares his story in a fascinating book, Palm Springs Modern Living. When the author and his wife “began a new relationship with the desert” in 2010 their home, designed in 1959 by William Krisel, had more than history to share. The author captured “The language of architecture” in his 223-page book, which brings the reader into contact with the people who live in homes that personify Midcentury Modern architecture,

Schnepf says, “my first visit to Palm Springs in 2007 was for a photo shoot of the William Krisel residence in Rancho Mirage. It opened my eyes to the open simplicity of the ability to live indoors and outdoors effortlessly, given the desert climate. After driving around the city and seeing the concentration of Midcentury Modern architecture I realized I need to return for further exploration.” That quest led to a section in the book, “The People of Palm Springs” with photo essays and people and homes you may never see on your own. T R AV E L Up Close & Personal With Jack Black and James Marsden BY BEVERLY COHN

Jack Black is a Santa Monica boy who made it to the top. He attended the Crossroads School for Arts & Sciences, followed by enrolling in UCLA where he became a member of Tim Robbins Acting Ensemble. Since then, Black has racked up a number of film credits including Bernie, for which he won Golden Globe and Independent Spirit Award nominations. He had the lead role in Nacho Libre and in Gulliver’s Travels and one of the leads in Tropic Thunder. Also a familiar face on episodic television, he appeared in such series as Tenacious D: The Complete Master Works and more recently Welcome to Sweden and The Brink. Black has also been the voice in a number of animated features including the Kung Fu Panda series, Shark Tale, Ice Age, and television’s The Simpsons. James Marsden hails from Stillwater, Oklahoma and received his theatrical training at Oklahoma State University. After one year, he decided to move to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. He cut his professional acting teeth by working in episodic television including such series as The Nanny, Blossom, Party of Five, Touched by an Angel, and Ally McBeal. Among his film credits are: X-Men, Sugar & Spice, Zoolander, The Notebook, Hairspray, Death at a Funeral, and 27 Dresses. Black and Marsden co-star in their latest film, The D Train. Lest you think it’s a story revolving around the New York City subway system, let me assure you, that it

does not. Written and directed by Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel, the story revolves around two main characters - a loser by the name of Dan Landsman, wonderfully played by Jack Black, and a very popular high school classmate by the name of Oliver Lawless, played by James Marsden who crawls into the skin of his character, creating a very complex, tormented man. Plans are being made for a high school reunion and Landsman is head of the committee, most of whom make fun of him behind his back. Advance sales are not good so after seeing Lawless in a cheesy commercial for a sun tan lotion called “Banana Boat,” he thinks Lawless is at the height of his career and tells the committee he can get him to attend the festivities. The committee mocks him but Landsman is determined to convince Lawless to attend. Thus Landsman sets into motion a series of duplicitous actions that cause him to sink deeper and deeper into a morass of deceit and lies. Other members of the cast include Kathryn Hahn as Landsman’s wife, and Jeffrey Tambor as his technologychallenged, trusting boss. Black and Marsden recently sat down with a select group of journalists and the following interview has been edited for content and continuity. Have you attended any of your class reunions? Marsden: I’ve missed my reunions. I wasn’t against going but I was out of town working and couldn’t go. I still keep in touch with the people I was friendly with in high school. Black: I went to my 20-year reunion and had a good time. But there was some anxiety. Some of those old feelings came rushing back and suddenly you’re a teenager again. Let’s talk about the film. What attracted you to your particular character? Marsden: I love that both of these guys have their own form of desperation. Jack’s

Jack Black and James Marsden in “The D Train” character of Dan looks at my character of Oliver as a super cool, James “Deaney” success story in Hollywood. But he’s actually pathetic. He’s been run ragged by an industry that hasn’t been favorable to him. I like that element of it. Like the guy who’s not Colin Farrell or James Dean, but he still desperately wants to be that guy. That’s what we do as actors, I guess. Everyone is looking for his version of validation to feel relevant. Then Dan comes into his life and makes him feel that way. He brings him back to the days when he was the hot shot at school, so odd as we are as a couple, we both provide something for the other person. Whether or not that’s catastrophic or combustible, makes for good comedy. I like my character because he’s cool and obviously clearly flawed as well. Black: I like my character because he isn’t really likable and that was an interesting thing to see in a comedy. I hadn’t read anything like that before. Usually the formula is you root for your hero, but this guy is kind of a turd so you don’t root for him and you don’t even like him. Sometimes it’s difficult to watch him because scenario after scenario are cringe-worthy situations where he’s so desperate to be liked and loved. There was something very interesting about that to me that I wanted to play. I’ve always been intrigued by the least popular people. There’s something very interesting about that and maybe there’s something in me that I am working out. I found a movie about that guy very fascinating. That guy doesn’t usually have a movie made about him. (Laughter)

the people from high school. But he has to be transported back in time to get attention because Hollywood hasn’t been good to him. It’s not like he’s that charismatic. He’s just too cool for everything. But Dan brings me back to that world and reminds me of my strengths. He remembers me as being the greatest thing. Everyone wants his ego stroked and he gets caught up in that. He would have never thought about going to reunion until Dan showed up. He tells me I’m a superstar now because I’m in a “Banana Boat” commercial, but I don’t feel that way. He can be kind of unlikable actually, but he just trying to figure out his way and for a moment, Dan makes him feel good. Has it ever been a burden to be good looking? Black: Let me tell ‘ya. (Much Laughter) Yes it has! (More Laughter) Marsden: I’ve dying for that question. (More Laughter) The cross I bear. (More Laughter) Even before you became an actor, you were probably very popular, but now you’re competing with other goodlooking actors, have you… (Marsden cuts off question.) Marsden: I can’t… Black: (Raising both hands in the air.) Dude, before you answer that (Laughter) I should warn you that this is a very dangerous question. It’s going to be very hard for you to come up looking good no matter how you answer that question. (Laughter) It’s a real ‘gottcha’ question. (Laughter) I say next question. Marsden: I feel like you’re talking about someone else.

People seem to like You don’t know you’re Lawless, but he’s not good looking? necessarily deserving of all Marsden: Ok. Forget it. the attention he gets. What Next question. (More Laughter) do you think of that? Black: I told you. Let me be Marsden: In the movie he your publicist just for a second. only gets attention from Dan and Let me cover the mike. (Laughter) May 20, 2015

Marsden: I guess I could say something like I’m so super grateful to be this good looking. (Laughter) You don’t know what it’s like to wake up every morning with these cheekbones. (Laughter) Black: Also, you can never complain about being famous either. You know, how hard it is to sign autographs and take pictures with people. That’s also a bad bad way to go. (Laughter) Can you talk about the chemistry between you during that kiss and was it difficult for you? Black: I don’t know if we even want to talk about that. Did they talk about the penis in the Crying Game junket? (Laughter) Marsden: We had chewing tobacco and pepperoni for lunch. (Laughter) That was the last scene of the movie that we shot. Black: We were very professional. We had powerful mints. What are those curiously strong mints? Marsden: Altoids. Black: Altoids and barbiturates. (Laughter) Marsden: I wasn’t ready for the sensation of what stubble felt like. (Laughter) To me, when I read the script for the first time, it was one of the funniest moments. Like this is how far this guy would go to win someone’s affections. So you kind of have that in mind. Like we have the audience at this point and what’s their response going to be? It could be like: ‘Oh my God, this is awful!’ or ‘This is hilarious.’ We had no idea. But Jack and I were on board from the beginning. This is not something you can do halfassed. You gotta’ go for it and it’s funnier because of that. Black: It’s only funny if it’s real. If it’s sort of silly, than it turns into something dumb that you’ve seen before. It would be like Will Ferrell kissing Jimmy Kimmel on a Saturday Night Live sketch. Continues on Page 11 www.desertstarweekly.com

FILM ‘American Sniper’ and More on DVD BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN

This year eight films were nominated in the best-picture category. Four were based on the lives of real individuals. “The Theory of Everything,” told the story of Stephen Hawking, given two years to live following his ALS diagnosis. Fifty years later, he is still alive. In “Imitation Game, “ we learned about an amazing WWII hero, the brilliant British mathematician Alan Turing, who broke a secret Nazi code. The computer he and his staff invented saved millions of lives during the war, but instead of being lauded as a great hero he was punished for being gay at a time when homosexuality was considered a crime. “Foxcatcher” was the creepy, but true tale of John DuPont, a wealthy, but truly unhinged multi-millionaire that used his wealth to sponsor the U.S. wrestling team during the Olympics several decades ago. And last, but by no means, least, Clint Eastwood’s “American Sniper,” the autobiography of Chris Kyle, considered the most lethal sniper in U.S. history. On May 19th Warner Brothers “American Sniper” was released on DVD and Blu-ray, and to honor the many wounded veterans Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has announced that it will donate a portion of the proceeds from the release (digital and actual DVDs) to the Wounded Warrior Project. One dollar of each purchase will be donated, up to $1,000,000, from now through Dec. 31, 2015. To get involved and learn more visit www.woundedwarriorproject. com. Oscar-winning filmmaker Clint Eastwood (“Million-Dollar Baby,” “Unforgiven”) directed “American Sniper” from a screenplay written by Jason Hall, based on the book by Chris Kyle with Scott McEwen. A runaway bestseller, Kyle’s autobiography spent 18 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, 13 of those

weeks at number one. Oscar’s nominee Bradley Cooper (“Silver Lining Playbook,” “American Hustle”) stars in the title role, and his performance is pitch perfect. In the film he not only bears an uncanny resemblance to the war hero, he has perfected Kyle’s Texas accent to the point that his widow felt she was watching her husband on the screen, not an actor. While Eastwood did not receive a directorial nomination this year, many critics like Kyle Smith of The New York Post considered the film “the best film of the year.” To his credit, Eastwood has not made a war film; he has created a true story that sheds light on the heroism and pain caused by war to all involved—whether enemy or patriot. For Kyle, lauded and revered by his comrades in arms, his historic success as a lethal sniper, comes at a terrible price. In his youth, Chris and his younger brother considered themselves cowboys. Kyle was an excellent rodeo rider, but everything changed dramatically after the attack on New York’s Twin Towers on September 11, 2001. A patriot, he enlisted to defend his country in whatever might follow. At 30, his age was against him, but his determination to master rigorous Navy SEAL training paid off, along with his amazing skill as a sharpshooter fostered in his youth by his father. When Kyle is sent to Iraq, his prime mission is to protect his brothers-in-arms. His pinpoint accuracy saved countless lives on the battlefield. Soon his skill and courageous exploits earned him the nickname “Legend.” As his reputation grew, his legend also grew behind enemy lines. As a result, the enemy put a price on his head, making him a prime target of insurgents. Despite the danger he faced in Iraq, he managed to live through four tours only to be killed at home

Black: The first one that gave me the taste was a commercial when I was 13 years old – 1983. It was for an Atari video game called “Pitfall.” The kids at school saw me in the commercial, which was my whole mission – so it was mission accomplished. They recognized me and I was super famous and popular for about two days and then it magically went back to the way it was before – not so popular. (Laughter) That’s when I got the bug and I knew I had to get more. It was like a little taste of crack. (Laughter)

Bradley Cooper in “American Sniper” by a fellow soldier he was trying to help. “American Sniper” shows us the toll war takes on the individuals who face death daily and their families who also serve. When they finally return home, the scars are not only physical but mental as well as they try to readjust to family and home life knowing their comrades are still in harm’s way. This marks the third nomination for Bradley Cooper, and his performance is amazing. He is able to convey so much pain and inner turmoil with a glance, his posture or the anguish in his eyes as he faces the possibility that he may have to shoot a child in order to protect a fellow soldier. The Blu-ray combo pack and two-disc DVD contain many special features like “One Soldier’s Story: The Journey of American Sniper.” In this segment, you join director Eastwood and his creative team, along with Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller (who play Tara, Kyle’s wife) as they

overcome enormous artistic and logistic obstacles to make a film that brings the truth of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle’s story to the screen. Another feature is “Making of American Sniper.” The film is rated R for strong and disturbing war violence and language throughout, including some sexual references.

••••••••••••••

“Foxcatcher,” starring Steve Carell (almost unrecognizable behind the makeup and dour demeanor) in the role of John DuPont, a mentally disturbed multi-millionaire, is another Oscar contender now available on DVD and Blu-ray. It too is based on a true story and deals with the disturbing and ultimately tragic relationship between DuPont and two champion wrestlers (Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo). It was directed by Oscar’s nominee Bennett Miller, who won an Oscar in 2005 for his direction of “Capote.” DuPont, despite his wealth,

is a misfit when it comes to human relationships. In an effort to connect, he takes on Tatum Channing and offers to be his mentor. He would also like his brother (Mark Ruffalo) to join him, but Ruffalo doesn’t want to uproot his wife and children by moving, despite DuPont’s generous monetary offer. Eventually, they all come together at the DuPont estate and the result of their interaction ends in tragedy and death. The film, from Sony Pictures Classics, is rated R for some drug use and a scene of violence. The other Oscar contenders, now all available on Blu-ray and DVD, are “Boyhood,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Birdman,” which won for best picture, “Whiplash,” “The Theory of Everything” and “Imitation Game.” Now’s the time to check them all out and binge watch.

Is Terrorism a Threat to Suburban Communities?

By Desert Star Staff For many living in suburban and rural communities, the threat of terror may seem very remote and limited to major metropolises. But is this complacency warranted? “It is common for people

to hear the word terrorism and immediately think of Islamic extremists operating abroad. But terrorism comes in many forms, each with its own characteristics,” says Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, a fellow at the American Society of Criminology and author of the

new book, “Global Terrorism and its Effects on Humanity,” which addresses the causes, agendas and methods used by terrorists and offers a prescription for eradicating this worldwide threat. “ U n f o r t u n a t e l y, no community is truly safe from terror

threats,” he points out. F ro m e c o t e r ro r i s m to pathological terrorism, the definitions, causes and manifestations of terror are varied. And modern technologies are creating the possibility for new forms of terror attack that can have global effects. For example, cyberterrorism -- attacks on information technology -- and biological terrorism -- the release of toxic biological agents -- could have implications that know no borders. While all this may sound scary, Mumuni offers a prescription for hope. “Terrorist groups find it easiest to recruit among people with a narrow or distorted view of the world. We must therefore help states give all their citizens a modern education that encourages scientific inquiry and free thought,” he says. He also calls for strengthening public health initiatives to

protect against bio-terror threats which could potentially spread infectious disease across the world in a matter of days. “While the World Health Organization’s Global Outbreak and Response Network has done an impressive job in monitoring and responding to outbreaks of deadly infectious disease, in the case of an overwhelming manmade outbreak, it is the local health systems that will be in the front line,” he says. More information about Mumuni’s book can be found at http://www.media-connect. com/blog/?s=mumuni. While terrorism is a complex issue that will primarily be handled at the state level, experts are encouraging residents of local communities to learn more about terror threats, stay informed of current events, and be active participants in civic matters. Three Steps to Improve Your Credit Score

By Desert Star Staff Good credit is a key ingredient in succeeding financially; yet building a strong foundation takes time. If you are new to credit or are working to improve it, there are many steps you can take to put you on a path to stronger credit. Here are three essential steps that help you get started: • Check your credit report: Experts recommend checking your credit report at least once a year. Your credit report contains details of your credit history, including balances, credit limit and payment status. Lenders, apartment managers and some employers may check your credit

14

DesertSTAR

report to see how responsible you are with money. When you check your report, make sure it contains current and accurate information. If you find errors, correct them as soon as possible because they may negatively impact your credit score and even indicate possible identity theft. You can request a free copy of your credit report from each of three major credit reporting agencies -- Equifax, Experian and TransUnion -- once each year at www. AnnualCreditReport.com or call toll-free 1-877-322-8228. • Make sure you’re paying your bills on time: Life happens and you may find yourself

forgetting to pay a bill on time. Because your payment history is one of the biggest factors in your credit score, it’s important that you stay organized and keep track of all your bills. This applies to more than just credit card bills, but also when it comes to rent, utilities and cell phone payments. Using free online tools, often available through your financial institution’s online banking, can help your develop a budget and create an automatic bill payment schedule. Many financial institutions also allow you to change your payment due dates for one that is convenient for you. If it helps, you can organize May 20, 2015

all your payments to be due on the same day of the month. • Make a budget and stick to it: One of the best ways to keep up with your bills is to closely monitor your spending. Creating a budget can help you decide when to use credit and when to hold off on a purchase. Keeping a budget is also helpful because lenders look at the amount of debt a consumer has compared to their income. As an important rule of thumb, keep debt at no more than 35 percent of your income or lower. This will tell lenders that your debt is at a manageable level relative to your income, and you are likely to have money left

over for saving or spending after you pay your bills. In addition to the steps listed above, there are many free resources available that can help you improve and manage your credit. Wells Fargo recently launched Path to Good Credit, a new website that offers videos, tips, quizzes and infographics that illustrate how good credit can help consumers succeed financially. For more information, visit www.wellsfargo.com/ buildcredit. Take steps now to improve your credit for a solid financial future. StatePoint

INP1500340 To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the WILL or estate, or both of JOHN K. JACKSON AKA JOHN KENNEDY JACKSON. A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by GREG OVEROSS in the Superior Court of California, County of RIVERSIDE. THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that GREG OVEROSS be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act . (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held in this court as follows: 06/17/15 at 8:45AM in Dept. 1A located at 46-200 OASIS ST., INDIO, CA 92201 IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk. Bananas are a Nutrient-Rich Food Choice for Your Diet HEALTHY CHIQUITA BANANAPEAR CHEWY GRANOLA BAR

The average American eats 27 pounds of bananas every year -- and it’s no wonder, bananas not only taste great, they are also good for your health. As an excellent source of dietary fiber, complex carbohydrates, vitamins and other nutrients, bananas are low in calories, have no fat, sodium or cholesterol. So, incorporating them into your diet just makes sense. While bananas on their own make a great snack, they can also be enjoyed in appetizers, desserts, salads, smoothies,

and baked goods, too. For a wholesome treat, try this recipe for Healthy Chiquita Banana-Pear Chewy Granola Bars, which relies on fresh fruit for its sweetness instead of refined sugar, making it a delicious, healthful choice. When shopping, look for bananas that were farmed responsibly. For example, Chiquita is committed to reducing its carbon emissions by 30 percent by 2020, recycles 2,000 metric tons of plastic bags and twine used on company farms annually, and is committed to reforestation

Palm Desert Clinch 7th Straight DVL Title PALM DESERT – This time last week, the La Quinta High School baseball team arrived at Palm Desert High School with a chance to dethrone, and end the Aztecs six-time DVL championship streak. It did not happen. With a 10-4 lead in top of the seventh inning, senior standout Andrew Bash found himself in a familiar position – on the mound in a closeout game, ready to win the league title. Finishing in typical Aztec fashion, Bash got the complete game win, clinching the school’s seventh straight league title. “It’s gratifying,” Aztecs head coach Darol Salazar said in an interview. “They work very hard all year, and for them to see

the fruits of their labors, that’s important for me. It’s like pay day for them. They’ve worked hard, and they’ve earned it.” The Aztecs opened up the game with a four-run first inning and the Blackhawks could have gotten down but they did have a little fight left. After loading the bases, the Blackhawks got two hits from Brian Mello and Dennis Zanesco to bring the deficit to one. That was the last serious threat, as Palm Desert managed six runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. After the final out, the team erupted from the dugout and even gave their long-time head coach an ice shower. Palm Desert did not start the season with a flashy win

The Aztecs have an 11game win streak heading into the postseason, are playing their best baseball and according to Coach Salazar, are right where they want to be. “We play a really tough

schedule early,” Coach Salazar said in an interview after his team clinched the league championship. “We don’t score a lot of runs, and it takes us a while to settle in, but I think we’re right where we want to be.” Earning first place in the

Desert Valley League also means a first-round bye in the playoffs. Palm Desert will play a home game on Thursday against the winner of Elsinore High School and Northview High School. Game is scheduled to start at 3 pm.

This Father’s Day Think Beyond the Tie By Desert Star Staff The tie has been a traditional Father’s Day gift since the holiday was first celebrated. But this year, men’s fashion experts say think beyond this staid accessory while Father’s Day shopping. “The modern man is expressing himself in much broader ways and rounding out his wardrobe with more creativity than he has in the past,” says Denis Daly Wood, founder of Dalys 1895, fourthgeneration luxury men’s designer and online retailer. To give Dad the gift of contemporary style, Wood offers some great Father’s Day shopping tips: • Get inspired by Dad’s favorite hobbies. For example, if he’s an outdoor enthusiast, perhaps he would like a new sturdy backpack, hiking boots or gloves to wear during his next adventure. If he’s a writer, a leather-bound journal or engraved fountain pen are great gift ideas that could prove useful

and personal. Search for items that could help Dad better enjoy doing the things he loves. • Dad may have his favorite suits, but buying him an accessory to accent his outfit can make him look and feel his best when he’s at the office or out to dinner. A pocket square, like a limited edition Caravaggio silk pocket square, can add a level of sophistication to Dad’s look. • Has your father been carrying the same wallet for years? Upgrade his style with a wallet of a different color or texture or select a sterling silver alternative, like the Dalys 1895 Sterling Silver 16 Gauge Money Clip, with his hand-engraved monogram for a personal touch. • Does Dad have a favorite watch that he loves to wear? Buy Dad a watch winder or watch box where he can keep his treasure. A bracelet that complements his watch can also add a great touch to his outfit all year round. • For the traveling dad,

consider a sleek, stylish weekender bag or briefcase to amp up his style even while he’s on the go. If Dad always travels with his tablet or laptop, be sure to find a bag with tech pockets

that will protect his gadgets even during takeoff. For even more Father’s Day gift ideas, visit www.dalys1895. com. Don’t resort to a tacky

“Number One Dad” t-shirt or boring, tired tie. Take this holiday as an opportunity to elevate Dad’s style.. StatePoint
