(AFP Photo / David Mcnew) By Desert Star Staff Wildfires continued to whip through southern California on Thursday, forcing more people to evacuate their homes in the San Diego area and inspiring the governor to declare a state of emergency. Officials have opened an investigation into arson. San Diego County officials have had no choice but to maintain existing evacuation advisories for the thousands of people who live or work in the

path of the fires. Orders issued Wednesday prohibited the 9,000 students who normally attend California State University to avoid campus. More were advised to stay away from their usual places of school and employment on Thursday, as the fires showed no sign of slowing down. “That’s the number one priority, is to save life and then to save property,” San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob said at a news conference on

Thursday, as quoted by the Los Angeles Times. “We are not out of the woods yet.” The wildfires have so far destroyed 10,000 acres, with emergency crews struggling to contain the flames and prevent additional homes from being put in jeopardy. One person was found dead at a transient camp in the Ambrosia area, but the body was too badly burned for firefighters to determine an identity. No injuries have been reported.

By Desert Star Staff PALM DESERT, Calif. – Sharon Brown-Welty, the associate director of the doctoral program in educational leadership at Fresno State University, has been named the new dean of Cal State San Bernardino’s Palm Desert Campus. She will begin July 1, 2014. “We’re delighted to have someone of Dr. BrownWelty’s stature in the education community as well as her vast experience as a university administrator to lead our Palm Desert Campus,” said CSUSB President Tomás Morales. “Our decision was informed by the tremendous level of feedback we received from campus and

community constituents. We both believe Sharon will hit the ground running and make an immediate impact in the Coachella Valley.” “I am so pleased and honored to be joining the Palm Desert Campus as the new dean,” Brown-Welty said. “I look forward to working with the campus staff, the supportive community and the College of the Desert to increase the college going rate in the Coachella Valley as well as to provide an outstanding college experience to current and future students.” “These are exciting times and I look forward to connecting with the leadership of the Coachella Valley, students, faculty, and staff

in the coming days,” she said. Brown-Welty has been published in a number of professional education journals and periodicals. She is also the author of a number of book chapters on educational leadership and has served as an editor and reviewer for professional education publications. She has also made many major presentations on educational leadership. She is a member of the American Evaluation Association, the American Educational Research Association, and has been a member of the American Association of Higher Education

San Marcos was among the worst hit areas, with only five percent of an 800-acre fire under control. An additional 13,000 homes and businesses were named in a new evacuation notice, with Sheriff Bill Gore telling reporters that so many notices were sent out as a “reminder to everybody just how volatile this can be.” Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for San Diego County, making it possible for officials to take

advantage of special resources and funding to battle the flames. An estimated $22 million in damage has already been caused, with Sheriff Gore admitting that arson is among the causes being investigated. No less than eight fires were blazing in Southern California on Thursday, seven of them in San Diego County. Story and Photos by Pat Krause DHS, CA.- The Annual, Evening at the Pueblo, was held at Cabot’s Pueblo Museum in Desert Hot Springs on May 17th. Over 200 guests enjoyed a tasty buffet dinner and was entertained by The Hickory Winds Trio. Each guest was given a DVD, Cabot Yerxa: Building a Dream, that tells about the life of Cabot Yerxa and the Museum. The party honored two very deserving people, Lorraine Becker; Ed.D. was given the Gordon Gribble Volunteer Award. Lorraine is a board member at Cabot’s Museum and a community leader. The Portia Yerxa Philanthropy & Cultural Heritage Award was given to Jim Casey, Philanthropist and Business leader. Jim Casey was unable to attending as he is in Europe at the Cannes Film Festival with his new film by Jim and Kim Productions. The audience was happy for him and was sorry he was unable to accept the award. David Brinkman and Barbara Keller accepted the award for Casey with a cute skit and a life-size cut-out of Jim Casey. David Brinkman held an empty glass high and asked the guests to toast Mr. Casey. President and CEO John Mahoney gave an enlightening speech on the Merits of Cabot’s Museum and asked for donations to continue their educational mission. The Museum also has categorized all the artifacts, and they are now kept in a climate-controlled storehouse facility. There is a critical need for preserving our historical artifacts for the younger generations to enjoy and learn about the culture of our early settlers and the time before Indian Tribes of that era.

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Dear Kelly: I enjoy reading your column weekly and am hoping to join our HOA board in the near term. Can a new board member email results of board decisions to the home owners to keep them abreast of what is going on? Our current board is very secretive and autocratic. I want to do all I can to make our HOA more democratic. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks for your help. A.C., Long Beach Dear A.C.: A c o m m o n i n t e re s t development board should be as open as it can with the members – who are not just members but also your neighbors. There are many strong ways to demonstrate openness such as – strictly observing the Open Meeting Act (Civil Code 49004955); making sure minutes are timely available; and periodically sending “board updates” to the members, most of whom do not attend board meetings. Doing a report on your own could have

several drawbacks – you can create conflict within the board, or you can make statements which are erroneous or which are your opinion but not necessarily the official position of the board. Also, you can mistakenly reveal closed session information, which could even expose you and the association to liability. Try to work with your colleagues, and encourage them to communicate meaningfully with the neighbors in your association. It is a good sign of a healthy association with a trustworthy board. Thanks, Kelly Kelly: I recently received a letter from our management company telling me to remove my two signs from my carport gates. They did not state what was the CC&R or rule I was breaking. Isn’t it a law that they refer to our CC&R document which should have a number or code referring to what rule I have broken? MY signs are “Private Property No Trespassing” & “Keep out”. I was told if I didn’t take them down I would be fined. Please let me know what I should do. Thanks L.B., Cherry Valley

be your personal property, but when you place it on common area property the association is affected. Your association may have rules regarding what can or cannot be posted on exterior common area locations. The association, if it does initiate a disciplinary hearing against you, must tell you what rule or use restriction you are violating. Civil Code 5855(b) requires a disciplinary notice to “contain, at a minimum, the date, time, and place of the meeting, the nature of the alleged violation” and a statement informing you that you may attend the meeting to address the board. However, don’t let it go that far. Ask your association manager to help you understand which policy the signs violate, and see if there is a sign location the

board would approve. If not, take them down – to you they are a helpful warning, but your neighbors might think them ugly. The main feature of community association living is that you all have to work together – which means sometimes you cannot do what you would like to do. However, remember, those same rules also stop your neighbors from doing everything THEY would like to do. Best regards, Kelly Kelly G. Indio Police Investigate Five Bank Robberies

By Angela Monroe INDIO -- Indio Police continue their search for a man who robbed a U.S. Bank branch getting away with an undisclosed amount of money. This is the fifth unsolved bank robbery in Indio this year.

These robberies happened at three different banks starting back in January, and the most recent on Wednesday. Police say there are similarities from the attire, to the fact the suspect never uses weapon, instead a demand note.

Police surround U.S. Bank once again to investigate a bank robbery. It happened Wednesday afternoon on a busy intersection in Indio. Police released photos of the suspect and get-away vehicle: a

brown Ford Explorer SUV. This is the fifth bank robbery just this year. “Within those five, there is some similarities, that’s what our detectives are working on, obviously there’s a connection, but again a good thing is that no one has been hurt in any of those instances,” said Ben Guitron with Indio Police. Less than a month before another robbery at the same bank photos were released again of a suspect Two months before that in February the same U.S. Bank was robbed on Highway 111 and Monroe Street. “Basically demanded, issued a note to the bank teller, approaches the teller, the teller cooperates and then the suspects on his way, and pretty much the majority of the bank doesn’t even know that it occurred,” said Guitron. Just across the street the Wells Fargo Bank was robbed on February 7th. In that and the April robbery, the suspect left on a

black B-M-X bicycle. In January a few blocks away, the California Bank and Trust was robbed. Police say this suspect left in an older model grey sedan, possibly a Ford Escort. “We are obviously working with the FBI and comparing notes with any other similar incidents throughout the valley or anywhere that might lead us to obviously finding this individual, or if there’s more than one that’s involved,” said Guitron. Looking back at archived Indio Police press releases, there was only one other bank robbery in the previous three years and a suspect was arrested in that case. All of these robberies were committed in the afternoon between one and four. If you have any information, you are asked to call the Indio Police Department or you can call Crime-stoppers anonymously at 760-341-STOP. Courtesy of KMIR www.kmir.com

by Art Kunkin                                                           Mr. Life Extension “mBraining,â€? a book published in 2012, explains the recent neuroscience research that reveals we humans actually have three brains, not just one head brain. There is the enteric (gut) brain, the cardiac (heart brain) as well as the cephalic (head) brain. In “mBraining,â€? the two authors, Marvin Oka and Grant Soosalu, succeed in helping the reader to understand the great practical importance of using all three brains in harmony: our gut intuitions, our heart-felt emotions and our head-based creative powers. Based on over 600 scientific research papers and articles, “mBrainingâ€? is much more than an introduction to some fantastic new scientific discoveries. In the author’s own words, the main purpose for working with your multiple brains is “to live with greater wisdom in all your decisions and actions‌Many people find it difficult to make any real and lasting change in their lives. As you’ll learn in this book, for real, deep, generative change to occur it takes all of your brains working together, aligned and in the right sequence. (This book) combines the “whatâ€? to do with the ‘how’ to do it, and even suggests a meaningful ‘why’.â€? The authors also point out that “the applications we recommend in this book are aligned with what many

esoteric and spiritual practices have been saying for two and a half thousand years or more. Ancient wisdom was and is wise for valid reasons, and science is just beginning to catch up and validate the neuro-structures behind much of the sage advice from past teachings.â€? Chapter One of this book reviews some experiments done at a laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania by Dr. Andrew Newberg and his associates. These experiments resulted in a scientific paper entitled “Cerebral blood flow differences between long-meditators and non-meditators.â€? Our book authors, Oka and Soosalu, commented on this research by writing, “After thousands of hours of exacting procedures and study, with the use of millions of dollars of high tech research and development equipment, Dr. Newberg and his colleagues have just announced to both the willing subjects of their study and the scientific world at large, they have found strong evidence that meditation changes the structure of the brain related to attention, emotion and the control of the autonomic nervous system.â€? Our two authors then clarify at length what constitutes a brain in discussing the existence of three human brains: “1) Large numbers of neurons and ganglia‌2) Neurons interconnecting with other neurons‌3) Support cells and components such

as glial cells...4) Functional attributes: perceiving/ assimilating information, processing information, memory storage‌5) Able to mediate complex reflexes via an intrinsic nervous system (i.e. it doesn’t need the head brain to direct it, it functions even in the complete absence of the head brain)‌6) A chemical warehouse of neurotransmitters (those found in the head brain are also found in the gut and heart brains). “Clearly the brain in your head is the reference model for this. But where else do we see the very same criteria and structure present? Yes as we have intimated in both the heart and the gut.â€? In 1991, Dr. J. Andrew Armour introduced the concept of the functional brain in the heart. The heart’s brain meets all the criteria specified above for a brain. Its complex and elaborate neural circuitry allows the heart brain to function independently of the head brain and it can learn, remember, feel and sense. There are somewhere between 40,000 and upwards of 120,000 neurons in the heart brain. It can learn and change. The heart brain uses neurohormones such as dopamine and norepinephrine, once thought to only exist in the head brain. The heart also secretes oxytocin, commonly referred to as the love or bondin hormone, and concentratons are found to be as high in the heart as those in the head brain. Oxytocin has

been shown to be involved in cognition, tolerance, adaptation and the learning of social cues. After its discussion of the heart brain, “mBrainingâ€? turns to the gut brain (scientifically known as the enteric brain). In 1907, Dr. Byron Robinson M.D. published a monumental book, “The Abdominal and Pelvic Brain.â€? This book was over 700 pages long and contained more than 200 detailed illustrations of the enteric nervous system – the little brain in the gut. This complex and intelligent gut brain contains over 500 million neurons and has the equivalent size and complexity of something like a cat’s brain. It utilizes every class of neurotransmitter found in the head brain. Over 95% of the serotonin used throughout the body including the head brain is made in the gut. In the space available for this column in the Desert Star Weekly, we cannot adequately summarize the more than 300 pages of information about the three brains in the “mBrainingâ€? book. Therefore, I plan to write more about this in the successor to my L.A. Free Press, www. LifeExtensionFreePress. com. This website is now available on the internet. Americana Returns via Three Generations of Music Legendary Mississippi harmonica master James Cotton, blues ambassador Keb’ Mo’ and young buzz-worthy singer-songwriter Nikki Hill are keeping roots and Americana music alive thanks to their latest releases.

Artist: James Cotton Album: Cotton Mouth Man (Alligator Records) You might like if you enjoy: Charlie Musselwhite, Little Walter Tell me more: As hard as it is to believe, the legendary James Cotton is celebrating his 69th year as a professional musician via his newly-released collection “Cotton Mouth Man.” Born on

a cotton plantation in Tunica, Mississippi in July 1935, the Grammy Award-winning artist was a child when he was taught how to play the harmonica from legendary Sonny Boy Williamson II (Rich Miller). Cotton, who subsequently toured with Howlin’ Wolf and spent 12 years with Muddy Waters, brings a lifetime steeped in the blues to his 13-track collection. While a battle with throat cancer robbed him of his ability to sing, his harmonica playing continues to be potent. Sharing in the latest stop on his journey are some pretty illustrious guests including Gregg Allman, Joe Bonamassa, Ruthie Foster, Warren Haynes, Delbert McClinton and Keb’ Mo’.

Artist: Keb’ Mo’ Album: BLUESAmericana (Kind of Blue Music) You might like if you enjoy: Robert Johnson, Keb’ Mo’s earlier albums Tell me more: Bluesman Keb’ Mo’ keeps getting better with age. Twenty years after the release of his eponymous debut, the Los Angeles native and three-time Grammy Award winner is earning some of the best reviews of his acclaimed career with “BLUESAmericana.” The 10-song album boasts a wide range of blues- and rootsstyled songs that frequently touch on the singer’s marital

struggles (he and his wife Robbie thankfully worked through the difficult times chronicled on the disc). Songs such as “Do It Right,” “The Worst is Yet To Come” and “Somebody Hurt You” are reflective while the joyful “Move” will have listeners dashing out to the dance floor. An outstanding album to be sure. Information: Kebmo.com. Artist: Nikki Hill Album: Here’s Nikki Hill (Deep Fryed Records) You might like if you enjoy: Wanda Jackson, Ruthie Foster Tell me more: Hailing from Durham, North Carolina, roots rock ‘n’ roll singer Nikki Hill

has burst on the international scene for a reason. The singer and her incredible backing band dubbed “the Pirate Crew” (guitarist Matt Hill, bassist Ed Strohsahl, drummer Joe Meyer) play a blend of blues, rockabilly and early rock ‘n’ roll with the abandon of the pioneering artist who created it in the 1950s. But there is something contemporary and powerful about Hill and company’s approach as evidenced across the 10-song “Here’s Nikki Hill.” Highlights on the disc include the R&B-flavored “Ask Yourself,” rocker “Her Destination” and her soaring cover of the 1961 hit Barbara George “I Know.” Information: NikkiHillMusic.com.

‘12 years a Slave’—Excellent but Difficult to Watch

“12 years a Slave,” based on the memoir of Solomon Northup, tells the story of a free black man, Northup, who was unjustly kidnapped and enslaved for 12 years in 1841. In 1853, his memoir was published, allowing the world to witness the tragedy of his brutal captivity. Now, over 150 years later, his gut-wrenching ordeal is once again on view in director Steve McQueen’s Oscarwinning film, which received nine Oscar nominations. While McQueen didn’t win as the best director, his film “12 years a Slave” garnered Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress, Lupita Nyong’o and Best Adapted Screenplay, John Ridley. As the film begins we meet Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor, nominated in Best Actor category) at home with his wife and two children. Both are welleducated and Solomon is also an accomplished violinist. While his wife is away on business with their son and young daughter, he accepts the chance to play the fiddle for a carnival show to earn extra money. At the end of the two-week engagement he is drugged and sold into slavery. An intelligent man who can

read, write and play music, he is certain that he will soon be rescued, but his terrible captivity lasts for 12 long years. During his servitude he works for several plantation owners.

Ford (Benedict Cumberbatch), his first owner, is a kind man but his overseer is overbearing and hates the fact that a black man is more intelligent than he. This leads to grave complications.

Reluctantly, Ford sells Northup to the heartless Edwin Epps (Michael Fassender.) Throughout his long years as a slave, Northup remains confident that he will one day regain his freedom and be united with his family. Lupita Nyong’o gives a luminous portrayal as Patsey, a young slave who is a whiz at picking cotton. Epps constantly praises her, pointing out to all the men whom she is a far better worker than any of them. Such skill, however, doesn’t keep her from being sexually used by Epps. This enrages his wife. Your heart will break at the plight of this young girl who does her best, but constantly runs into trouble due to jealousy on the part of her owners who mistreat her sexually and physically. Throughout, Northup tries to be a source of strength and reason for the other slaves, including Patsey, while never giving up hope that he will once again be a free man. McQueen, a black British director, is able to capture the horrors of slave life with scenes of a mother pleading not to be sold without her children, lynchings and brutal beatings. He also manages to show that

some slave owners like Ford were capable of compassion and fairness. Another example of decency was a judge, who has Northup play the fiddle for one of his parties, rewarding him with money for his services before sending him back to his owner. The look of the film is serene and beautiful. The plantations are elegant; the skies are bright blue with billowing white clouds overhead as the camera pans to slow moving streams where tall trees laden with Spanish moss line the water’s edge. The physical beauty of the southern landscapes provides a sharp contrast to the ugliness of slave ownership. The background music is by the gifted composer Hans Zimmer. Chiwetel Ejiofor is excellent as Solomon, a man determined to live and be free once again. His expressive face and large eyes speak volumes. Others in the stellar cast include Brad Pitt and Paul Giamatti. “12 years a Slave,” now available on DVD, is from Fox Searchlight and is rated R.

The Town Home Diva Roars Into The Desert By Pamela Price Special to the Desert Star Weekly Whether she is billed as the Down-Home Diva or the Hebrew Hillbilly when Shelley Fisher arrives in the desert you know who is knockin’ at your door. With a raspy voice that is a flash of Mae West and a dash of Dolly Parton, this dynamic buxom blonde performer has something in common with Elvis Presley; they both have roots in Memphis, Tennessee, and they once met on an airline flight between San Francisco and Music City. That’s when, after being seated next to him in First Class, he said to her in his inimitable style “ Girl, you sparkle!” And that sparkle continues to fill cabaret theatres with laughter and tears from Los Angeles to New York.

Shelly Fisher made that happen again, along with Ken Hirsch on piano, on May 18th at the Arthur Newman Theater at the Joslyn Center in Palm Desert when Ms Fisher once again joined Les Michaels “Life is a Cabaret,” Sundays in Summer Series, and the price was right, $11 “cash only at the door,” or as my theater buddy says, “a paddy,” pay at the door. Growing up in south gives the previous Miss Shelly Nimitz, pretty in hot pink and pointy white boots a prospective life she reveals song by song from retrospective of musical snapshots of her beloved mother to her comical relationships with her previous tennis playing husband from Long Island in New York to the Sicilian father of her

only child, a daughter with drama on her mind as well. Shelley, a former kindergarten teacher with a teaching degree from Boston University was never meant for the classroom. It is her pizazz and personality destined for the stage, and it reverberates with every song she sings, which, by the way, she had a hand in composing with Ken Hirsch. While she blends kosher humor into the mix ( how about a serving of “gefilte” grits with your chicken soup?) her repertoire and glitzy outfit scoop up turning points of her life alternatively with laughs and tears. Shelley has a talent of striking a chord with her audience regardless of age. Shelley will be performing at Temple Isaiah in Palm Springs later this year.

Macklemore Apologizes for Offensive Costume

By CHRIS TALBOTT AP Music Writer Rapper Macklemore posted an apology on his website late Monday, saying he didn’t mean to mock Jewish people by wearing a costume that some say was anti-Semitic during a

performance in Seattle last week. Macklemore wrote that he randomly chose the pieces of the costume he wore at Friday’s performance so that he could disguise himself and move freely around during the secret show. He said it wasn’t meant to be a

caricature of a Jewish man. “I respect all cultures and all people,” he wrote. “I would never intentionally put down anybody for the fabric that makes them who they are. I love human beings, love originality, and ... happen to love a weird outfit from

time to time.” Grammy Award winners Macklemore & Ryan Lewis made the appearance at the EMP Museum in their hometown to help celebrate the debut of a new exhibition. Photos from the concert show Macklemore wearing a black wig and beard and a fake hooked nose. Macklemore and Lewis gained widespread fame with a message supporting diversity, and their hit song “One Love” calls for tolerance and support for members of the gay community. The two performed the song at January’s Grammy Awards while several same-sex couples were married, and they have been lauded for their progressive messages. Lewis and his mother appeared on Anderson Cooper’s show on CNN to talk about their HIV-AIDS charity efforts before Macklemore posted his message

Monday night. In a postscript, the rapper pointed out the work of the Anti-Defamation League, providing a link to the group’s website. The ADL was formed to fight anti-Semitism. Macklemore said he understood his detractors’ point of view. “I acknowledge how the costume could, within a context of stereotyping, be ascribed to a Jewish caricature,” he wrote. “I am here to say that it was not absolutely not my intention, and unfortunately at the time I did not foresee the costume to be viewed in such regard. I’m saddened that this story, or any of my choices, would lead to any form of negativity.” Online: http://Macklemore. com Follow AP Music Writer Chris Talbott: http://twitter.com/ Chris_Talbott Courtesy of KMIR www.kmir.com

Teenage Angst And Ennui In “Palo Alto”

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic How does that age-old adage about talent go? Oh, yes. Jack of all trades master of none. “Palo Alto”, the film based on a selection of short stories that had been incorporated into a very slender book chronicling a series of episodes of bored and boring Silicon Valley teenagers by James Franco, becomes the subject for the film debut of yet another Coppola family member - Gia Coppola. Gia, grand-daughter of Francis Ford Coppola, however, displays and very ably represents, her famous family in her film directorial debut “Palo Alto” I just wish she had better source material to highlight her talent as a first time director.

Technically, the film is proficient with good camera work, and acting. Her style validates her famous family pedigree and penchant for delivering auteur written and directed films. Her cousin, Sofia’s second written and directed by feature credit in 2003’s “Lost in Translation”, produced four Academy Award nominations nabbing a Best Oscar statuette for Sofia for Best Original Screenplay Alas, that’s not going to happen with “Palo Alto”. But that’s not entirely Gia’s fault. True, directors have to bite the bullet and take the hit when the film doesn’t live up to the director’s expectation. In the case of “Palo Alto” which hits southern California screens sometime

Wildfires ravage so cal Continued from Page 1 above, with 22 military aircraft working to help overwhelmed local crews. Still, the risk remains extremely high because of dry conditions and strong winds, a lethal combination for firefighters. “Already this year, Cal Fire has responded to an over 100 percent increase in the number of wildfires than average,” California Fire spokesman Daniel Berlant told the Times on Thursday.

“It starts with the drought. The grass, the brush and the trees – not only in San Diego County, really across California – are really dry.” The entire state of California is experiencing “severe drought” conditions, meteorologists reported on Wednesday. The hot, dry air and record temperatures have only contributed to the devastating flames.

this May, at least it arrives at the beginning of the movie summer season. It’s available for teens and young adults to sample its somewhat predictable storyline that is supposed to resonate with them. Hey Dude, I don’t think so. There are over 100 million young people in the age demographic “Palo Alto” is targeting and I doubt this film will truly resonate, except in the fantasies of young people waiting to grow up and join the rest of us in the rat race of adulthood. If you thought your High School days were boring, wait to you see these paragons of the student body in action. Coppola and Franco’s views on the “secret and desperate” lives of America’s adolescents “The combination of hot temperatures, gusty Santa Ana winds and widespread singledigit humidity will bring an extended period of dangerous fire weather conditions to much of Ventura and Los Angeles Counties,” warned the Los Angeles office of the National Weather Service. Schools will be closed through Friday, officials said, with lower temperatures over the weekend expected to aid firefighters.

are so preoccupied with booze, drugs and sex that their days really don’t leave much time for the serious business of merely living and growing up. I haven’t seen that many cigarettes fired up and that much alcohol consumed, or that many sexual liaisons since episodes of TV’s “Mad Men” burst on an unsuspecting America viewing public ten years ago. The not so stellar stories excised from Franco’s book and cobbled together by Coppola, revolve around a shy, sensitive, and virginal April (Emma Roberts) a sometime baby sitter for her high school soccer coach Mr. B (creepily played by James Franco, who also produced the film). Teddy, a secret admirer of April (nicely played by new comer Jack Kilmer, son of Val Kilmer) is an introspective artist whose best friend and loose cannon sidekick Fred, played by Nat Wolff in an over-the-top effort reminiscent of the James Dean character in “Rebel Without a Cause”, together and separately all managed somehow to screw up their lives in a society that doesn’t understand their inner problems, which by the way, are never explored or explained. Emily (Zoe Levin), is a promiscuous high school loner who seeks validation through sexual encounters (shades of “Saturday Night Fever”). One high school party after another – without a parent in sight – bleeds into a series of reckless behaviors on the part of our intrepid upscale party-going teenagers until everything spins

into chaos, without offering a single resolution or explanation. When it comes to the casting of the roles, however, Gia Coppola and her casting director get high marks. They have peopled the screen with interesting actors. Roberts (a niece of Julia Roberts) is especially compelling, conflicted, moody, and vulnerable in the role of a teenager about to enter the world of adults and all that that implies. In reality Roberts is a youthful looking 23 year-old that the camera just loves. Is the torch of older filmmakers and ageing movie audiences being passed to filmmakers of the 21st century like the Coppola’s and other emerging writers and directors? If it is, I sincerely hope that they come up with better quality stories to tell. As for films about teenagers yes, there is definitely a place for them in the commercial arena. Our hope is that the material be a little more compelling and grounded in reality. In the case of “Palo Alto”, it remains to be seen if the summer movie genre – mainly made up of young girls – can raise the movie to the level of a summer box office winner. It’s a little dark, edgy, and fragmented, which are pluses for younger audiences. On the down side, at times it moves at a pace bordering on glacial. That’s not a good sign for America’s attention-challenged young viewers or for the box office receipts. Time will tell.

If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may visit this Internet Web site www.hoalaw.com/foreclosureinfo for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file/TS number assigned to this case: 226900121-6712. s p o rt s 6th Straight Time’s A Charm For Palm Desert High School Sports By Daniel Marinelli

PALM DESERT – for the 6th straight time, and the 12th time in that last 13 years. Palm Desert High School’s baseball team has captured the DVL title. Entering the final two games of the regular-season last week, the second-place La Quinta Blackhawks had a slim chance of tying the Palm Desert Aztecs for first place in the DVL. Palm Desert has had one of the best baseball teams in Southern California for the better part of the last two decades. With a national ranking of 201, and a California ranking of 39 (maxpreps.com), the elite Aztecs entered the final series against the Blackhawks boasting a 10-game win streak and an undefeated league record. If the Blackhawks were going to pull off the upset of the Aztecs,

they had their work cut out. Palm Desert, however, is La Quinta’s biggest competitor and in rivalry games, anything can happen. The Blackhawks had an eight-game win streak of its own and liked their chances against the champ’s Tuesday’s starting pitcher for the Aztecs, Brody Kato (8-1, 1.45 ERA, 44 Ks) – arguably the best pitcher in the DVL – was not going to let his senior season end losing a league title-clinching game on his account. The game became a pitching duel immediately after Andrew Bash’s three-run home run in the first inning. Kato pitched into the sixth inning, only allowing three hits and one run. Bash pitched the final inning and a third, preserving Kato’s eighth win. The Aztecs win streak, and most importantly, the DVL title.

“It feels good (to win the DVL), “ Aztecs head coach Darol Salazar said. “We have a very experienced team, and I expected good things. We told the kids, it’s not how you’re playing in March. We just want to get better every week, and this team is taking that approach.” The Blackhawks and Aztecs played a rematch – the final game of the regular-season – and this time; it was Gil Sauceda’s bases clearing triple that ended La Quinta’s hope of, at most, redeeming the loss in the first game of the series. The Blackhawks tried making a game of it late, but once more, Coach Salazar called upon Bash – who another time saved the game for the Aztecs. The Aztecs have achieved three of their season goals: go

undefeated in the DVL, sweep rivals La Quinta and wins the DVL title. With a 12-game winning streak heading into the CIF-SS Div. 3 playoffs, Coach Salazar’s team has positioned itself perfectly to make a long run in the playoffs. “The times that we won CIF, this is how we finished,” Coach Salazar said. “You want to finish with all the momentum; you want to finish with your best baseball. We’re right where we want to be right now going into playoffs.” The year they won the CIFSS Div. 4 championships in 2010, the Aztecs finished the regular season on a similar 13-game win streak. Last season, Palm Desert did not make it beyond the second round. In 2014, with the No. 1 overall seed in Div. 3, the Aztecs will have the easiest

path to the championship. Three DVL teams start the playoffs on Friday. The Aztecs start their postseason run at home against the winner of the Hawthorne High School Cougars and Palmdale High School Falcons. The DVL’s second seed, the Blackhawks, drew a home game against the Orange High School Panthers. Earning the DVL’s third and final playoff seed, the Indio High School Rajahs hit the road to play the Rialto-based Carter High School Lions. All three games start at 4 pm. “We’re the number-one seed in the CIF. We’re the number-one seed in the division. We should (make it to the championship). That’s what we’d like, but we’re not looking at the championship, we’re looking at the first game.”

By Michael Marot AP Sports Writer INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Kurt Busch wrecked during Monday’s practice at Indianapolis, putting him in a backup car for the openwheel portion of his historic double this weekend. Busch spun coming out of the second turn on the 2.5-mile oval and slammed hard into the outside wall. It was the biggest crash of the month. Andretti Autosport said Monday night the car would not be repaired by the Indy 500 and Busch will drive teammate Marco Andretti’s backup car. Busch will still start 12th. Debris flew into the air, there was a small fire and one of the tires rolled dangerously down the track as the car rolled to a stop on the infield grass. But the hardest part for Busch was contemplating all the work that must be done now as he becomes the fourth driver to attempt completing the

Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. Both races will be held Sunday. “This created a lot of work for the Andretti guys. I feel bad for that,” he said. “As a rookie, there’s things you learn and put it up on the edge and get away with and then there’s times when it will bite you. It’s just tough.” Busch was checked by IndyCar medical director Dr. Michael Olinger at the infield medical center and immediately cleared to drive. Busch said he was fine and ready to return to racing Friday when the final 1-hour practice sessions will be held. Busch said it wasn’t a big deal he had to switch cars because he completed his Indy rookie orientation program earlier this month in a different Andretti Autosport car. “The ability of the Andretti Autosport team to field the car, it doesn’t matter how it starts, or where it comes from,

they’ve been very accurate with everything,” Busch said by phone. “I’ll get over it quick. I’ve wrecked cars before.” In the garage area, crew members covered the damaged right side of the car with blankets before moving in into the garage and closing the door. When some fans attempted to take parts from the car, Andretti Autosport team members chased them down and retrieved the parts. The team then took the car back to its Indy shop to determine whether the car could be repaired. “We’ve already worked our crews to death, trying to work with this schedule,” said Kyle Moyer, Andretti’s director of racing operations. “But we’ll get it done.” Initially, officials said Busch would start from the back of the field if he used another car in the race. Series officials later clarified that would not be the

case, something that should help Busch. He qualified 12th, the outside of Row 4 on the 33-car starting grid. No driver has won Indy after starting 33rd. What happened? “I was starting to feel comfortable,” Busch said. “That’s when I made the mistake of just letting my guard down or settling into that long runtype mentality whereas with an Indy car you have to be on edge. You have to keep track of where you are at all times and the adjustments in the car.” Other IndyCar drivers thought Busch may have been done in by his NASCAR roots. “It looked like he just got loose in two and it looked to me like he overcorrected, like you would in NASCAR,” Josef Newgarden said. “The thing looked like it almost snapped straight, but then it went in on its side.” Here are five other things from practice: NEW LEADER: Though the speed chart from Monday’s practice means little because teams were working on race setup in traffic, Newgarden, who drives for Sarah Fisher’s team, was the fastest of the day. His best lap was 227.105 mph. Juan Pablo Montoya, the 2000 Indy winner who drives for Roger Penske, was second at 226.532. Scott Dixon, also a previous Indy winner, was third at 226.433 for Target Chip Ganassi, and Russia’s Mikhail Aleshin was the fastest rookie at 226.371. Aleshin was fourth. ACTING PRESIDENTIAL: NCAA President Mark Emmert got a chance to show a different side at Indianapolis. He opened practice waving the green flag

and also got a chance to ride around the track with three-time Indy winner Dario Franchitti, who retired last fall. “That was the best ever,” Emmert said. “He was always my favorite driver. It was a complete surprise that he was driving it. It was wonderful to chat with him, and of course, ride around the track with him.” MARRIAGE VOWS: Longtime Indianapolis 500 fans Cory and Linlee Patterson of Lafayette, Indiana, were married Sunday in one of the Tower Terrace suites. They met speedway president Doug Boles and pole-winner Ed Carpenter. They have attended the past five 500s together. OLYMPIC QUEST: Dallas Robinson and Abe Morlu, who worked with the U.S. bobsled and luge team at the Sochi Olympics, were at the track working with Buddy Lazier’s team Monday. They met Lazier’s engineer, David Cripps, at the Olympics and were reunited at the track. Robinson and Morlu worked with the team and took a ride in the 2-seater driven by Mario Andretti. THE SWITCHBACK?: NASCAR driver Parker Kligerman started his career in open-wheel cars. Now the 23-year-old is considering a move back. He would replace Busch in the Coca-Cola 600 if Busch doesn’t make it back in time. “I have a love for openwheel cars and it’s something that me and my manager Bob Perona have talked about,” Kligerman said. “I’ve been given a bit of a vacation right now, so I’m taking the opportunity as a race fan and a racer to see what’s out there and what the possibilities are.” Courtesy of KMIR www.kmir.com
