Documentary about the life of Kaye Ballard

Seated are Grace Robbins and Kaye Ballard - Standing are Alexis Hunter, Jere Ring, Johanna Supple Cullip, Ric Supple, and David Kaminski Craig Prater Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Cultural Center, formerly the Camelot Theatre, held an exclusive sneak preview of a documentary about the life of our local celebrity, Kaye Ballard. The film was shown in the large Camelot Theatre, and there were no empty seats. An A-list of Celebrities arrived to see this film about their friend and fellow entertainer, Peter Marshall, Gavin MacCloud, Roberta Linn, Lola Rossi, Alex Korey, and local radio personalities, Melinda Reade, Joey English and Bill Finegold to name just a few. The list of friends was equally as long. The line of fans to enter the theatre started an hour early so they could get a good seat as they knew it was a sold-out show. The Documentary was Kaye Ballard telling about

her life, her start in show business, her career and how she learned the trade. I think I am not alone when I say I remembered Kaye mostly as a singing comedienne but the documentary blew me away when she just sang. Her voice was fantastic, and she sang some of the songs for the first time before others made them famous. She was told she could have been an Opera star but was happy she chose this life in the theatre. Her credits are enormous on stage, in the movies and television. The list of shows she was on TV was a lot more than I remembered and brought back memories of these TV shows. Kaye mentioned that she felt so lucky to be in these shows with some of the most famous people in the industry, people she admired. She told

how she would watch the stars and learn from them. Kay used her intelligence to make her a household sensation on TV and in the movies. She said she was smart in some ways and made some major dumb mistakes along the way. There are many ups and downs in the entertainment industry when trying to make it a career. Her slapstick type humor along with her talent kept her working for years. She said that so many of her friends and fellow actors were kind, talented, caring and helpful. There were only a couple that she said made life miserable and were not nice. She mostly had glowing praise for all her peers. Her fellow actors said she has always tried to help others in their careers by telling people to check out their talent. This documentary

was so well done it kept you continually looking for more. The audience was so silent most of the time but when a clip showing Kaye singing or on TV they would clap loudly. Many well-known celebrities praised Kaye in the Film and told about how they knew her and performed with her. Kaye along with the producer, Tim Pierson, and the Director, Don Wingate held a Q&A after the film. There were few questions as most people were just thrilled to let Kaye knows how beautiful she was and how they loved the movie. Most fans told of her generosity, humanity and what a lovely voice she had. Supporters said she could do anything, sing, dance, play the flute, be a comedienne and a consummate performer. Not many artists today can

say that which makes her a specialty in the theatre. Kaye was such a warm human being up on stage when she said she was so glad that people stayed thru the whole film and didn’t walk out. She said many times she loved everyone in the audience and thanked them many times. She said she felt so lucky to have so many fans and the career she chose. So many of Kaye’s friends and fans wanted to tell her they loved the film and wanted to thank her that the stage was filled with well-wishers. I-phones were busy taking photos of her and asking her to pose with them. I hope they show the film again so many more people can see what a great performer and singer she was in this documentary.

Native Tribes to State: No Grizzly Trophy Hunts By Desert Star Staff CHEYENNE, Wyo. – In preparation for a vote this week on a proposed grizzly bear hunting season, tribal nations from across Wyoming, seven other states and two Canadian provinces have sent letters to Wyoming Game and Fish Commission

officials opposing the move. Herb Welsh, a spokesman for the Northern Arapaho Elders Society, says the bear is considered to be a sacred relative integral to their culture. “The grizzly bear is a sacred animal,” he stresses. “He’s a sacred being. This is how our ancestors have

always believed. But even taking one grizzly bear life, because someone somewhere has pockets deep enough to afford that tag, that license, that’s wrong.” The U.S. Interior Department ended 42 years of protections by taking the grizzly off the endangered species list

in June of last year. A lawsuit was filed by the Sierra Club and others in August arguing that the delisting was premature due to a decline in food sources. Wyoming officials say the hunting plans - removing 22 bears, including up to 12 females - are meant to prevent population declines. A tag will cost Wyoming hunters $600, and $6,000 for out-of-state residents. The tribal letters outline what they say are breaches of historic treaties enshrined in the U.S. Constitution, should Wyoming proceed with the hunt, as well as violations of laws including the American Indian Religious Freedom Act and the National Historic Preservation Act.

Welsh says the Northern Arapaho Elders Society simply wants state officials to recognize their sovereign rights. “And it was created for the protection of our ancestral ceremonies and also for the protection of our sacred sites,” he explains. “These are all issues that our traditional form of government has authority over, and they have the first and last say in these areas.” More than 200 tribal nations that signed a treaty to protect the grizzly say the solution is not killing the bears in a trophy hunt. They’re asking that the bears be relocated to tribal lands with suitable habitat. Wyoming’s wildlife commission is expected to vote on the hunt Wednesday.

Young adults are wise to begin financial planning early

By Janice Gough As advisors, we should help younger clients bridge that gap between what their life is today and what it may be like later. With young clients the problem is that that they may not have yet accumulated enough assets in which they feel like a financial advisor is necessary and their investments may not meet the minimum investment required by an advisor. When one begins to understand the importance of saving for a rainy day, it is a starting point and an important time in which they

need to invest themselves in learning. Most have never been trained to save or feel the need to, as most have live comfortable lives with all their needs filled by their parents. I applaud all parents today who make their children get jobs, so that they can begin to pay their own way. More may be learned from working your way thru college, than the studies themselves. There are certain attributes that one gains in struggle. They are appreciation, pride of accomplishment, cocoordinating efforts with others, goal setting, time management, respectability, overcoming failures and the ability to set goals. These traits will provide more security for a young person than having a ton of money to spend and a cushy life. It does not matter the amount that one can save out of every paycheck, it is far more important to establish a habit of saving. Savings should be placed on auto-

pilot, because as soon as that hard cold cash reaches one’s hands, there are thousands of things on their wish list, and the thing that they spend the most time doing, the internet, will provide a gazillion more ways to spend easily. When our rainy day arrives, we all experience the rewards of saving and planning financially. When a younger person begins to make money this is the most important time to become educated on financial planning. Including a basic financial course in their studies is important in any career. Investment clubs are very inspiring and a great learning tool. When you are young invincible, and on your way up, why think about a will, a medical or a financial power of attorney? Young people feel that it is so far into the future, they do not give it priority. Young adults may not actually need a will until they are married with children or have accumulated assets significant

enough to need protection. Once they have children a will is necessary to designate a guardian for the minor children. No one is invincible, and accidents can happen. It’s important to prepare for these situations, no matter how remote the possibility may be. Over the age of 18, parents no longer have automatic rights to access medical records or to make legal or financial decisions on their children’s behalf. As financial educators, we help young adults envision how life will look 40 years from now, and visually place themselves in that picture. Most younger adults have experienced family medical situations and deaths. They have experienced the problems of what the caretakers and descendents have had to face when there has been lack of planning and preparedness. Getting them to think about the importance of their own will is a starting point. Many

youth believe that, if they’re young and do not have a lot of money, they don’t need an estate plan. That is simply not true. They should begin having a conversation with their parents to discuss how the parent’s estate plan may impact them. Financial websites, like www.nolo. com and www.Rocketlawyer can provide tools and a fillable form, in which a “State specific”, Will, Power of Medical and Financial Attorney can be written.

lower and not building the association’s reserve account each month. This is not help, any more than it helps to borrow each month to pay one’s bills. Reserve accounts keep homeowner associations financially stable by accumulating money each month to roughly offset the ongoing deterioration of capital common assets – such as, for example, roofs, railings, decks, asphalt and other items which deteriorate with the passage of time. An association which does not faithfully build its reserve balance each month is falling into debt – but the truth is not revealed until the association needs a major refurbishment and the association discovers it is unable to pay for the necessary work. Associations in such a position have three choices (all of them bad): delay the work, ask the members to approve a major special assessment, or mortgage the association’s financial future by making a long-term loan with

one of the banks serving HOAs (assuming the HOA qualifies). Underfunded reserves have become such a problem that the California Bureau of Real Estate issued a Consumer Alert in September 2012 on the subject. Homes in underfunded associations, particularly condominiums, may have unintentionally misleading appraisals since appraisers are not required to examine the status of the association reserve account.

How Much Reserve Money Does Our HOA Need?

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Hello Kelly, I enjoy and learn from your column on HOA’s. I live in small residentmanaged HOA. Our reserves are very low. Is there a minimum amount or percentage for reserves required by law? Also, is there a legal requirement for a regular audit? Is there a resource I can access for basic legal requirements for HOAs? My sense is we are not fully complying with regulations and laws. Thank you, F.S., Carlsbad Dear F.S.: No, there is no specific minimum percentage or amount of money required to be in an association’s reserve account, and the law does not specifically require that ANY money must be in the account. Instead, the law focuses on disclosure, in the hope that savvy homebuyers will realize that purchasing a home in a poorly funded association is less desirable. Civil Code Sections 5560, 5560, 5565 and 5570 require, among other things, that all associations obtain a reserve study each three years, review it annually, and make extensive disclosures about the extent to which the HOA is accumulating the amounts of money recommended by the reserve study. Many boards feel they are helping the members by keeping monthly assessments

May 23, 2018

As to audits, California law does not require an association obtain regular audits. However, Civil Code 5305 requires that associations with at least $75,000 in annual income obtain a review of its financial statements annually by a licensed accountant. California law is becoming more complex and burdensome on HOAs each year, and smaller HOAs are treated exactly the same as huge 3,000 home associations. Even very small associations these days need a professional

Is that ‘Junk’ in Your Attic or Basement Worth a Fortune?

By Desert Star Staff From baseball cards and sports equipment to postcards and toys, is that “junk” in your attic or basement dusty treasure or just dusty? We’ve all heard of families getting rich from the sale of rare memorabilia. So how can you tell if your stuff is valuable and how can you sell it, if it is? “The general rule is that the older the item, the more valuable it is. 1980 is not old. 1960 is kind of old. 1910 is old,” says Al Crisafulli, Auction

Director at Love of the Game Auctions, an internet sports auction house that has helped many families identify and sell valuable items. In one instance, Crisafulli determined that a family’s baseball bat that spent decades beside their front door to protect from intruders, was actually used by Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig -- and Love of the Game Auctions sold it for them for more than $430,000. He is offering these tips to help determine if

your items are valuable: Baseball Cards: Cards from the 1960s and earlier are collectible, and those from before the 1940s can be extremely pricey. Do they have sharp corners, no creases and retain original gloss? Do they depict star players and Hall of Famers? A Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner or Mickey Mantle will sell for more than non-stars. With particularly old cards from the 1880s and early 1900s, look for tobacco

By Desert Star Staff If you think your history lessons in school were completely factual, you may be mistaken. “Much of what you know about history may be limited or even wrong,” says Marc Wilson, author of “Kidnapped by Columbus,” a new historical novel. “All too often, legends, poems and myths are emphasized in favor of more complex truths. History is usually written by the victors, not the victims.” What that in mind, here are four historical facts that may surprise you. Columbus a Kidnapper: “In 1492, Columbus sailed the Ocean Blue,” says the famous poem that most Americans know. But Columbus never landed on or even saw North America, and when he sailed in the Caribbean and along the coast of Central and South America, he kidnapped natives to act as guides in his search for gold and the Garden of Eden. At the end of his first voyage, he kidnapped six natives from the island of Hispaniola and took the “Indians” to Spain to prove that he’d reached India. Native Americans have been mislabeled as “Indians” ever since. “While many around the world hail Columbus as a hero, even honoring him with a U.S. federal holiday and naming cities after him, his actions led

to the exploitation and deaths of millions of people. He was a great sailor and explorer, but he traded in slaves and brought devastating diseases to the New World. He opened the door for Cortez to conquer the Aztec Empire, and for Pizarro to conquer the Inca Empire,” Wilson adds. Washington’s Cherry Tree: As the myth goes, young George Washington couldn’t tell a lie and confessed to his father that he damaged his cherry tree. However, one of his biographers, Mason Locke Weems, had no such problems with the truth and invented this whopper in the fifth edition of his Washington biography, entitled “The Life of Washington” in 1806. And Washington never wore wooden dentures, either. He had different dentures made from gold, ivory and even lead. Napoleon: Not Short: Napoleon wasn’t actually short. At the end of his life he was measured at 5 feet 2 inches -- which sounds short until you learn this was in French inches, which are longer than British inches. In today’s inches, the fiery tyrant actually stood around 5 feet, 7 inches, which was slightly taller than the average European man of his day. He also employed tall soldiers in his personal guard, which made him seem shorter by comparison. Jackie Robinson: Not

First: Jackie Robinson was not the first African American to play baseball in the major leagues. While he was the first in the modern era, breaking into the National League in 1947, way back in 1884, Moses Fleetwood Walker played for the Toledo Blue Stockings as catcher. The team was part of the American Association, one of three major leagues of its day. Baseball maintained segregation for many decades after this and Robinson became the first player to end this segregation in April, 1947. So, how can those interested in history go about arriving at the truth? From, historical novels to primary source materials, reading beyond the textbook can give you a more complete and accurate history. StatePoint

and candy brands, such as Old Judge, Piedmont, Sweet Caporal or American Caramel. Unopened packs from almost any era can be valuable. Memorabilia & Equipment: Look for old advertising posters depicting sports stars and food, tobacco or sporting goods brands. This doesn’t mean ads torn from magazines, but those used as store displays and for other purposes. Tin signs are highly collectible from the 1900s into the 1960s, but lowquality reproductions aren’t. Pre-1950s catcher’s masks, baseball gloves and bats can be valuable, especially those endorsed by star players. Condition is important but used equipment can be valuable. When you go to sell sports items, consider a specialty auction, such as Love of the Game, which has the expertise to properly research sports pieces, and maintains lists of bidders specializing in this area so it can get top dollar for these items. More information is available at loveofthegameauctions.com. Postcards: Postcards of your vacation destinations likely are worthless. But those depicting famous people,

such as movie star cards and vintage baseball postcards, can be valuable. Look for early “real photo” postcards from the 1900s through the 1940s, which are photographs printed on postcard backs. No matter the type, the older, the better, and the more famous, the better. Old Halloween or Christmas postcards from the early 1900s can be expensive. The same goes for many intricate “holdto-light” postcards, where portions of scenes light up when held to strong light. Toys: Look for famous characters, such as early Walt Disney items, superheroes, Star Wars, etc. The most prized toys are those in original condition with no broken pieces and paint intact. And if you have original boxes, you might strike gold! So, while you’re cleaning that attic, basement or garage, don’t rush to purge. Before throwing out old “junk,” determine if it’s valuable! Talk with Your High School Grads About Celebrating Safely

By Desert Star Staff Graduation is a time to celebrate. But before your high school seniors begin their parties, take the time to talk with them about keeping events alcohol-free—it just may save a life. No amount of underage drinking is legal or safe. And we know that any underage drinking can lead to consuming too much alcohol, which may result in poor decisions, injuries, alcohol overdose, and possibly death.

It’s About Your Teen… A teenager’s brain is still developing, and it is very sensitive to alcohol’s effects on judgment and decisionmaking. Tragedies can—and do—happen, so underage drinking should not be a part of any end-of-year celebration. The Effects of Alcohol Can Be Deceptive… If you are asked to explain the reasons behind your rules, you can describe the effects of alcohol on the human body: When people drink alcohol, they may temporarily feel elated and happy, but they should not be fooled. As blood alcohol level rises, the effects on the body—and the potential risks— multiply. Inhibitions and memory become affected, so people may say and do things that they will regret later and possibly not remember doing at all. • Decision-making skills are affected, so people may be at greater risk for driving under the influence—and risking an alcohol-related traffic crash—or making unwise decisions about sex.

• Aggression can increase, potentially leading to everything from verbal abuse to physical fights. • Coordination and physical control are also impacted. When drinking leads to loss of balance, slurred speech, and blurred vision, even normal activities can become more dangerous. • Consumption of a dangerously high amount of alcohol can also lead to alcohol overdose and death. • Vulnerability to overdose increases if the teen is already on a sedative-hypnotic or pain medication. When people drink too much, they may eventually pass out (lose consciousness). Reflexes like gagging and breathing can be suppressed. That means people who have had too much alcohol could vomit and choke, or just stop breathing completely. Think About It! Drinking to celebrate graduation can result in vandalism, arrests, sexual assaults, injuries and trips to the emergency room, alcoholrelated traffic crashes, and worse. Drinking by teens can put them—and their friends— in real danger. Ask them to consider this question: Is that any way to celebrate?

Talk With Your Graduate… It is critical to talk with your graduate because research shows that parents do make a difference. By serving as a positive role model, talking with other parents and your teens, supervising parties to make

sure no alcohol is served, and supporting alcohol-free school celebrations, you can help prevent a life-changing mistake.

graduate notices any of these signs, don’t wait. Call 911 if you suspect an alcohol overdose.

A Word About Alcohol Overdose Thousands of students are transported to the emergency room each year for alcohol overdose, which occurs when high levels of alcohol suppress the nervous and respiratory systems. Signs of this dangerous

condition can include: • Slow or irregular breathing; • Vomiting; • Mental confusion, stupor, loss of consciousness, or coma; and • Hypothermia or low body temperature, bluish or pale skin. An alcohol overdose can lead to permanent brain damage or death, so a person showing any of these signs requires immediate medical attention. If you or your

and other errors. At some point, put your resume aside and return to it a bit later with a fresh pair of eyes or even ask a trusted friend or family member to take a look at it as well. Be sure your resume is in the right format for your industry. Some industries favor a straightforward listing of previous positions, others favor highlighting accomplishments and skills attained. If you aren’t

sure about your industry’s resume preferences, you can easily Google this information. The Hiring Process: Beyond typos and formatting, there may be another factor killing your prospects. More than half of job candidates are eliminated from the online job search by an applicant tracking system, which filters out resumes that don’t match the job description. This means if you don’t use the right words and put them in the right order, your resume will never be seen by human eyes. Here is a typical hiring process for a medium-sized company which gets around 100 to 200 applications per position, according to Dr. John Sullivan, an internationally known HR thought-leader in Silicon Valley: 1. The 100 to 200 will get filtered down to around 25 applications and given a 20-30 second view. 2. Of the 25, they will get a second look and filtered down to about five to 10 applications. 3. These five to 10 are assessed and maybe tested to

narrow it down to three to five. 4. Those three to five candidates will get an interview. 5. Only one person will be hired. Cracking the Code: Want to crack the code that will get your resume viewed and short-listed, and land you an interview? Consider leveraging free resources designed to help. For example, Family Credit Management, the non-profit credit counseling agency, has expanded their services to include a free resume review service. By emailing your resume to resumereview@familycredit. org, along with which position you are applying for or what type of job you’re seeking, you can get free feedback and pointers on your resume from financial experts. To learn more, visit familycredit.org. “Navigating the job market is never simple, however, smart strategies can help you become more effective in your hunt,” says McAuliffe. StatePoint

HOROSCOPES ARIES

This month you focused on values and possessions while seeking a meaningful state of security. There’s a possibility of identifying only with what you physically possess. But consider more deeply your worth and value. That you are valuable. This identity is a first step. Then focus on creating a secure and sustainable foundation, built to last, that supports all of life with sensitivity and comfort. Share, too.

TAURUS You must anchor yourself awareness as a calm and innovative leader who offers important information to the world. Everyone who listens acquires a new level of curiosity and intelligence. Through stability, research and discipline \you provide needed direction for others. You are a “light bearer”. Selfidentity begins with having true knowledge. You are the mentor & teacher for this.

GEMINI You are radiant when you serve others. Your love opens the hearts of everyone, especially those with, through hurt and trauma, closed hearts. Because of this task and gift, you require times of reflection, seclusion and rest. Your understanding and compassion brings healing balm to those in need. Do not allow yourself to feel

lonely. You are not alone. Your Soul, your angel and all of us stand with you.

CANCER You have very high hopes and goals, sometimes (oftentimes) unexpressed. It would be good if you could communicate what’s in your heart. Sometimes you have a tolerance of others. Sometimes not. More and more you’re called to unify the heart and mind. This calls for a focus not on emotional choices but on true knowledge. Your close friendships are most important. Keep them close.

LEO What goals, successes and accomplishments are you seeking? It’s important to realize ambitions hold a secret purpose. When we recognize our ambitions, our energy is focused and concentrated. All levels of leadership are important for you. Leadership unlock creativity. Some Leos are shy. They are quiet yet powerful leaders. It’s about ambition which becomes aspiration, which is identity and purpose.

VIRGO Virgos turn their focus to the environments around them, especially to gardens and the well-being of the kingdoms (mineral, plant, animal). Virgo’s have very high ideals. They can control their

restlessness, use their vast state of organized knowledge and become quite curious and adventurous. You realize, while being with humanity, that we are all brothers and sisters in one family.

LIBRA Desires for experiences have become more intense and concentrated. The usual way of life is not enough. You want to go deeper, wider and higher. Everything unexplored becomes magical and fascinating. Like the Hierarchy (inner world government), you move in two directions – inner & outer realities; diving into deep waters, rising up to heaven itself – creating the Cross of Life. Libra balances all levels. Stay in balance.

SCORPIO For the next month or so you will take pride in creating harmony with all interactions and relationships. You will need to be close to loved ones, perhaps one in particular. You drop one or more of your veils of protection, know you’re safe being vulnerable and begin to say what you truly deep down want and need. Social skills become easier. Peace results. This is a rare time for you. Observe it carefully.

identity. Each day it’s most important to have activities planned and to produce work that is your very best. It is also important to create Right Relations all the kingdoms. If these are not practiced each day, you somehow feel less than, sadness and loneliness follow. Upon waking each morning plan your day with intention to be a good steward to all you contact. The results are surprising.

CAPRICORN You have special and unique qualities combined with a deep level of creativity. Call forth opportunities to express yourself each day. Often you communicate with a dry sense of humor, a bit of drama and lots of fun. Eventually those who need to, notice you and this leads to new work ventures and adventures. Recognition (and compensation) calms your sense of restlessness. Children are most important.

All that you do concerning your work and profession relates to your sense of

about the most interesting things that you saw. • Make Music: Music education is important for budding minds, and learning music at home in summer can be easy and affordable. Stock your household with a portable keyboard designed for students in mind. For example, the CT-X700

boasts a high-quality sound system, as well as features that are perfect for student musicians, like a six-track recorder, a library of 100 built-in songs, and the StepUp Lesson system, which allows students to learn the songs with the display showing proper fingering and notation. Its USB-MIDI port connects to any Mac, PC, Android or iOS device with no drivers or installation needed. The included music rest is designed to support tablets, and the built-in smartphone shelf holds your device as you use the keyboard with favorite music apps. • Read Outdoors: Summer is the perfect opportunity for students to delve deep into what interests them most. Make a day of it. First stop: the library or bookstore, where kids can find reading materials dealing with their favorite topics. Then, pack a picnic lunch and find a shady spot in a local park or your own backyard, to read outdoors. At the end of the day, everyone can

“Hostiles”--The Western Returns With A Vengeance

“Hostiles” For a long time the “Western” seemed to have disappeared from view, but thankfully in Focus Films “Hostiles,” it has returned with a vengeance--literally. The film, written and directed by Scott Cooper (“Crazy Heart” with Jeff Bridges and “Black Mass” starring Johnny Depp) takes place in 1892 in New Mexico. It opens with Comanche warriors riding in and killing a farmer. They then ride after his wife and three children desperately running away toward the woods behind their cabin. She lives, but her three children are shot to death-the baby dying in her arms. We then cut to Capt. Joseph Blocker (Christian Bale) stationed at Fort Berringer in New Mexico. Much to his anger and disgust, Blocker is informed by his commanding officer that his last assignment before retiring will be to take Chief Yellow Hawk (Wes Studi) and his family back to their homeland in Montana. President Benjamin Harrison

has granted his return as a gesture of goodwill. Blocker was explicitly chosen since over the years he has learned to speak the Cheyenne dialect. He and the chief are ‘hostile’ enemies, so Blocker vehemently refuses the order. However, the Captain is given no choice in the matter-and so the journey begins. As they ride away from the fort, the captain stops to chain Yellow Hawk’s hands in front of him in a gesture of contempt and distrust. Then the group rides on. When they stop trying to rest they encounter the inconsolable mother clinging to her dead baby. When she sees the group of Cheyenne with the soldiers, she becomes hysterical. Eventually, after burying her family with the aid of the soldiers and Cheyenne, she is asked to join them. Blocker promises her he will take her to safety so she can return to her family back East. When they continue on

courageous warriors who fight bravely alongside Blocker and his men against all enemies they encounter along their treacherous journey. Eventually, a bond of mutual respect and genuine friendship is formed between these two men of war. In the featurettes on Bluray and DVD writer/director, Scott Cooper talks about all the research that went into making this film. Indian actors were used along with Wes Studi in his starring role as Yellow Hawk, and many Native Americans served as advisors to ensure that all details relating to Indian culture in that period were presented with accuracy. “Hostiles” is rated R for intense violence and their way, Chief Yellow Hawk language. Wine and Cheese Pairing Tips for Summer By Desert Star Staff Summer is a time for picnics, festive garden gatherings and poolside parties. For hot days and warm evening entertaining, keep things cool by creating a delicious, yet easy-to-prepare spread of wines, cheeses, fresh fruits and nuts.

www.desertstarweekly.com

Choosing cheeses to go with your favorite wines does not need to be difficult. Start by thinking of each component of the wine and cheese as a complementary or contrasting flavor, considering the texture, sweetness and flavor intensity of each. Experiment by tasting each on its own to get a sense

U.S. even closer together, and countless millions all around the globe viewed their marriage ceremony. Here on the west coast, many were eager to wake up in the very, very early morning hours to view the ceremony. And it was well worth it. It was like a fairytale come true with castles, horse-drawn carriages and the beloved queen, Elizabeth who has ruled well over a half-century with her Prince Philip. Royals and movie stars were in attendance along with friends of the bride and groom--and all the ladies sported colorful, elegant hats. The couple did not want any personal gifts. Instead, they requested that well-wishers give money to their favorite charities. Like his mother Diana, Harry and Meghan work tirelessly for others -- even on their wedding day. of its characteristics. Then, see how they taste when combined. You can do this on your own while planning your event or make it a fun activity with your guests. As part of their hospitality program, the culinary team at St. Francis Winery & Vineyards in Sonoma County, CA looks to local cheese producers for interesting choices to pair with their certified sustainable wines. To help hosts recreate the winery experience at home, here are a few pairing tips for preparing summer spreads that feature some of the best wines and cheeses of Sonoma County: Pair wines and cheeses of equal flavor intensity. Bold wines can overwhelm some cheeses. One pairing example May 23, 2018

of balanced flavor intensity is Laura Chenel Goat Brie paired with St. Francis Sonoma County Chardonnay 2016 (SRP $16.99). The goat brie is delicious for summer, with a light creamy quality that carries notes of grass and nuts and has a clean lemony finish. The Chardonnay has delicate aromas and flavors of green apple, juicy pear and melon. The combination is a bright, crisp wine that nicely matches the cheese’s flavors and weight. Pair bold reds with aged cheeses. Aged cheeses are richer in flavor. This aspect of their character counteracts the tannins of a bold red wine, making for a delicious pairing. Consider serving Vella Dry Monterey Jack, an aged cheese similar to

Parmigiano with a sweet flavor reminiscent of butterscotch, with Sonoma Valley Merlot 2015 (SRP $20.99). The expressive Merlot, with aromas and flavors of red cherry, plum, espresso bean and savory spices, complements the cheese beautifully. The aged Dry Monterey Jack cheese highlights the smooth texture of the Merlot wine. Add an array of fresh fruits to your spread. After assembling the cheese board, add color and texture with fresh fruits of the summer season. Strawberries, cherries, grapes, raspberries and figs are festive choices. For an added cool factor, put frozen green grapes in your glass of Chardonnay to keep it chilled without diluting the flavor. With these pairing tips, you are sure to have an entertaining and delicious cheese and wine filled gathering. Statepoint

United Cerebral Palsy fundraising Luncheon

Story and Photos by Pat Krause United Cerebral Palsy of the Inland Empire held a special fundraising luncheon on May 16th at the beautiful Ritz Hotel. There was a huge silent auction at the back of the room that saw a lot of activity with bidders. President/CEO Greg Wetmore thanked the guests for coming and encouraged them all to make donations for the bicycles that are given to kids with disabilities. Greg announced that there would be 30 minutes of entertainment before lunch was served. He wanted everyone to enjoy the particular show. David Green’s Musical Theatre University MTU

brought a dozen or so young performers from the Coachella Valley to sing and dance for the guests. These young men and women showed extreme talent. Almost each of the performers did a solo of singing, dancing or reading a poem. The troupe started with some very upbeat dancing and singing some well-known songs. Later in the program, they read poems that could have been written by someone who has a disability. Some of the songs after each poem were meant to enhance those poems. Very emotional and the performers sang with much of the same emotion that the verses stated. A special treat in the show

was the singing by Janene Lovullo. Lovullo has starred in many Broadway Productions, like The Pirates of Penzance, Les Miserables, and Cats. She is also a cabaret performer and a recording artist. Her rendition of, Somewhere Over The Rainbow, brought cheers from the audience. The group performed that night at the Purple Room in Palm Springs. The show was so well received that people wanted to know if they would be coming back to the next UCP event. The Presenting Sponsors for the event were Ann and Bob Byfield. Wetmore mentioned several volunteers that have been with UCPIE

for years and thanked Desert Lexus for their continued support also. He said that he hoped guests would make significant donations for the bicycles. They already donated 54 bikes to kids and adults with disabilities, and there is a long waiting list. These bikes give them freedoms they didn’t know possible. Each Bike is custom made for each and costs between $3,000 and Insurance does not cover $5,000 and. Micki James continues the fight against Cerebral Palsy that her husband Dennis James started so many years ago. Demitrious Sinor, the Chairman, spoke to the guests and mentioned his life growing

up. His parents were told he would never walk, never go to college and would not have a healthy life. He proved them wrong as he has done all that and more. He said people are 10% of what happens to them and 90% in what they do with what they have. Its Life Without Limits that UCPIE strives to achieve with their many programs. UCPIE has a mission to advance the independence of all people with disabilities, not just Cerebral Palsy, but all disabilities. They want them all to have a Life Without Limits and help them with what they can do and more.

By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE – A Northwest immigration-rights activist is heading back to court in her battle against deportation today. Maru Mora Villalpando is an organizer with the Northwest Detention Center Resistance. In December, she was issued a deportation notice, despite the fact that Villalpando does not have a criminal record. Her first court appearance was in March. That same

month, the U.S. Department of Justice set quotas for immigration judges aimed at speeding up deportations. Villalpando says like others, her case has been fast-tracked. She says in the past, a case like hers might take months or even years. “In a way, it’s very simple how immigration law functions because there’s really very few resources for us immigrants to access due process,” she says. “And so we expect that

the whole processing itself might not take too much time.” Villalpando says she wants to make her case public to help people understand that the vast majority of immigrants have no path to legal status. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement say it didn’t target Villalpando because she is a prominent political activist. Her supporters are gathering at 12:30 today outside the Seattle immigration court where

her hearing is being held. Villalpando expects one more court date before she is ordered to be removed from the country or detained. The mother of a 20-year-old daughter, she says deportation orders are tearing up families. She points to the Trump administration’s consideration of holding immigrant children at military bases - something the Obama administration also considered in 2015 but didn’t follow through with after

public pressure. She says this suggestion is inhumane. “This is the result of a system that was created precisely to destroy families,” she adds. “It’s just gotten so bad because we have allowed ICE to do these horrible things against our communities.” Today, Villalpando also will announce her lawsuit against ICE for its failure to respond to a Freedom of Information Act request in January for documents on her case.

Not only can watermelon be diced, sliced, balled or blended, it also provides numerous health benefits. Watermelon contains higher levels of lycopene than any other fresh fruit or vegetable and is a source of vitamins A and C, as well as vitamin B6 and potassium. Thinking beyond traditional slices, chunks or balls, there are many ways to incorporate watermelon into some of your favorite to-go meals, whether as a side dish or a key ingredient in beverages, salads or wraps. For example, these recipes for Watermelon and Bulgur Wheat Salad and Watermelon Collagen Creamsicle from the National Watermelon Promotion Board can help satisfy your sweet tooth and provide necessary nutrients while tackling the next task on your to-do list. ummer may be a break from formal education, but keeping kids excited about learning can be an easy way to keep them active and engaged instead of zoned out on screen time. The National Summer Learning Association estimates that kids can lose up to two months of learning during the summer but involving kids in educational summer activities can prevent them from forgetting skills they learned during the school year. Encourage your kids to keep learning outside of school with these fun and educational summer activities.

Visit a Science Museum

Spend a rainy day enjoying a science museum, which offers hands-on experiences to make learning fun. Kids can build on what they’ve already learned and apply new discoveries when they return to school in the fall. Many museums offer special prices for families,

which makes it an opportunity for the whole family to bond. Once you get home, talk about favorite exhibits or lessons and ask kids to express those memories on paper in the form of a journal entry or colorful drawing.

Head to the Zoo or Aquarium

At a conservation-oriented destination like an Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)accredited zoo or aquarium, kids can learn about the importance of environmentally friendly practices, animal care and welfare and more. Families can also explore the unique challenges facing endangered species and discover how members are Saving Animals From Extinction (SAFE). After learning about animals that need help, kids can visit zebrapen.com/aza for fun games that reinforce what they learned. Kids can also draw their favorite animals, real or imaginary, and take a photo to enter Zebra Pen’s AZA

SAFE contest. Prizes include zoo or aquarium tickets and items from the Zensations product line.

Go on a Nature Hike

Hikes provide abundant nature lessons, giving kids a chance to get some exercise while exploring and appreciating their surroundings. Visit a national or local park to get some fresh air and learn about preserving nature. Along with a picnic lunch, bring along information about local wildlife and plants, and have kids search for each item on the list as a scavenger hunt. Back at home, test their memories by having them create a collage of all the things they found.

See a Show at a Children’s Theater

Experiencing live theater is a positive way to introduce kids to new cultural experiences. Because they’re typically short in run time, most shows can hold the attention

of kids of all ages while conveying important life lessons. Pick a show with lots of interaction that can allow kids to stay focused and maybe even participate in the show. Acting out their favorite scenes, illustrating favorite characters or writing a new scene or different ending are all ways to keep the learning going after the curtains close.

Join a Library Program

Special summer programs at libraries can give kids a chance to enhance their reading skills. Many local libraries offer contests that challenge kids to read a certain number of books during the summer and include a series of incentives for reaching certain milestones. The reading component is often supplemented with crafts and activities to make reading fun. Extend the challenge even further by choosing a favorite book and asking kids to write or draw a sequel that takes those characters on another exciting adventure.

Capture Life’s Moments

12

In addition to getting out and exploring new things, encourage daily writing, coloring and expression by asking kids to creatively capture their summer experiences. Teaching kids to write and draw about things they find fun is a great way to reinforce what they’ve learned and foster a love for writing. Letting kids get creative begins with the right supplies. For example, Zebra Cadoozles and Starters come in different designs to get creativity flowing. Make summer adventures more memorable by encouraging kids to capture them through these ideas: 1. Write about experiences in a journal or diary. 2. Mom and Dad can join in on the fun by writing or creating their own bullet journals using Zebra Sarasa Fineliners, Mildliners and more. Bullet journals can be perfect for planning summer activities. 3. Take photos to share with friends and family both online and in-person. 4. Draw pictures of the favorite parts of the day. An option like Zebra Zensations Colored Pencils are perfect for writing, coloring, sketching and expressing creativity for every craft and project. They’re refillable and triangular-shaped, so they won’t fall off the table. 5. Share experiences on social media. 6. Collect drawings, writing entries and photos to create a summer keepsake or scrapbook. Find more ideas for capturing summer experiences at zebrapen.com.

MUSIC

BY ROBERT KINSLER

Releases Celebrate a Myriad of Musical Styles

Fans of great American pop, rock and roots music will want to purchase four collections available now.

Artist: Roger Joseph Manning Jr. Title: Glamping (PledgeMusic) You might like if you enjoy: XTC, Jellyfish, ELO Tell me more: A founding member of Jellyfish and key member of several other celebrated musical troupes (Imperial Drag, TV Eyes and The Moog Cookbook) and having subsequently worked alongside Beck since the late 1990s, it’s no wonder Roger Joseph Manning Jr. has returned with a recording of incredible depth, melodic songcraft and lyrical complexity. “Glamping” is a four-song EP and marks Manning’s first new batch of songs since his terrific 2009 disc “Catnip Dynamite.” With the lush and intoxicating “Operator” (a timely plea to somehow

make real connections in an inter-connected world) opening the collection, the outstanding set also includes the driving and aptly-named “Funhouse,” psychedelic-tinged introspective standout “Is It All A Dream” and probing “I’m Not Your Cowboy.” In addition to “Glamping” (available on CD, purple vinyl and via digital download), Manning has just released deluxe editions of his 2006 solo debut “Land of Pure Imagination” and his 2009 sophomore release “Catnip Dynamite.” Information: www.facebook. com/RogerJosephManningJr/.

Artist: The California Honeydrops Title: Call It Home: Vol. 1 & 2 (Tubtone Records) You might like if you enjoy: Vintage Trouble, Leon Bridges Tell me more: The California Honeydrops’ newly-released “Call It Home: Vol. 1 & 2” is not only a wonderful celebration of New Orleans jazz, funk, classic

R&B and soul and all kinds of blues, but the songs across the wide-ranging collection will make the listener feel great. The positive life-affirming spirit of the Northern Californiabased group is infectious and cast of talented singers and instrumentalists deliver the mix of songs recorded over a span of 18 months with perfection. The uplifting title track “Call It Home,” soulful “Coming Around,” aptlydubbed “Standin’ Still Blues,” lovely “Only Home I’ve Ever Known” and shining “Things We Used To Do” are among this writer’s favorites on a terrific release. Information: www.cahoneydrops.com.

Artist: Buck Owens and the Buckaroos Title: The Complete Capitol Singles: 1967-1970 (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: Dwight Yoakam, Buck Owens Tell me more: The second

of three volumes collecting the late Buck Owens’ Capitol singles discography, more than 30 classic tracks have been collected on the newlyissued “The Complete Capitol Singles: 1967-1970.” Whether you are a new or long-time fan of the father of the so-called “Bakersfield Sound,” you will find plenty to love across the two-disc set featuring a slew of great remastered tracks. The uptempo “Sam’s Place,” spirited “Happy Times Are Here Again,” and sweet ballads “Don’t Ever Tell Me Goodbye” and “I’d Love To Be Your Man” are among the timeless tracks on this wonderful collection. There are also several beloved duets Owens did with soprano Susan Raye, including the lively “We’re Gonna Get Together” and the reflective “The Great White Horse.” In addition to all the great music are the new liner notes from Scott B. Bomar shedding details and context to the singles. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

catching the duo’s incredible performance at the Doheny Blues Festival in Dana Point, CA. Sisters Rebecca Lovell (lead vocals, electric guitar) and Megan Lovell (lap steel, slide guitar, keyboards, backing vocals) are from Georgia and have carved out a bona fide sound that blends the bluesinfused Southern rock and style of the Allman Brothers with the harmonies and magic of Sweden’s First Aid Kit (the latter a roots-minded duo also featuring two young talented sisters). On “Peach,” Larkin Poe offers up a mix of outstanding original material and reworked classics they make their own. Standouts on the 10-track Artist: Larkin Poe collection include their own Title: Peach (Trickirollicking “Freedom” and the Woo Records) introspective blues ballad “Pink You might like if you & Red,” as well as a rousing enjoy: The Record cover of the traditional AfricanCompany, First Aid Kit American work song “Black Tell me more: Although Betty” and a tender take on Larkin Poe’s album “Peach” Robert Johnson’s iconic “Come was released back in On In My Kitchen.” Information: September 2017, I only recently www.LarkinPoe.com. discovered the disc after

Hawaii power plant shuts down after lava from Kilauea volcano flows onto site By Desert Star Staff A geothermal power plant has been forced to completely shut down after Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano entered a more violent stage, shooting fountains of red into the vicinity

and threatening the release of toxic gases from the site. Crews at the Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV) plant worked overnight to cap the 11th and final well at the site, which provides 25 percent

of the Big Island’s power. The wells run 6,000 to 8,000 feet (1,829-2,438 meters) underground to tap into extremely hot water and steam used to run turbines and produce electricity. The capping is the latest measure to be taken at the plant, which has been closed since Kilauea first erupted on May 3. Authorities previously removed the highly flammable chemical pentane from the site. “County, state, and federal partners have been collaborating closely to

monitor the situation and work with PGV to ensure the safety of the surrounding communities,” county officials said, as quoted by Reuters. Kilauea has entered a more violent stage which has seen larger amounts of molten rock oozing from the ground and traveling a further distance. Its most recent eruption took place at around 6pm local time on Monday. Lava began hitting the Pacific Ocean over the weekend, creating yet another hazard for the Big Island’s

residents. That hazard is known as ‘laze,’ a mix of hydrochloric acid, steam, and fine glass particles which is created when hot lava hits the cooler sea water. It can cause lung, eye, and skin irritation, and even death. At least 44 homes and other structures have been destroyed as a result of Kilauea, and 2,000 people have been ordered out of their homes. A man was also seriously injured on Saturday, after a plate-sized chunk of molten rock shot out of a fissure and struck him on the leg.

The Desert Star Weekly welcomes news and photos of local interest. Photos and jpg logos should be a minimum of 4x6” at 300 dpi (1800 x 1200 pixels). The deadline is each Friday at 5 p.m.

Vote Today on Creating a CA Online Community College By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Gov. Jerry Brown’s proposal to establish an entirely online California community college is set for a vote in a subcommittee of the state Assembly Wednesday, but many instructors say they are wary of the idea. The governor wants to spend $120 million now and $20 million each year thereafter for an online community college that would target people who have no post-secondary education. But Wynd Kaufmyn, who teaches in-person and online engineering courses at the City College of San Francisco, thinks working adults who go back to school need the support of a campus community - and worries that an all-online approach would lead to more dropouts. “I can’t think of anything

more wrong-headed,” she says. “It’s duplicating efforts that are actually better placed to serve the students. I think the best way to go is to fund the programs and the wraparound services that will ensure their success at their local community colleges.” The governor says he hopes a new online community college would fit better into students’ busy lives and entice the 2.5 million adults aged 25 to 34 in this state who have a high school diploma but nothing more. However, some educators worry that it would simply drain students from existing community college programs. David Lau, an adjunct English instructor at Cabrillo College in Aptos, says he favors the hybrid of in-person and online courses that most community colleges currently offer. He adds that busy adults are more likely to succeed if

Gov. Jerry Brown has proposed spending $120 million on a new online community college.(Fabienne/Morguefile) they have personal contact with students and teachers. “In face-to-face course offering, as an instructor you can often make all kinds of different attempts to intervene, offer assistance, mandate that

they come to office hours, give them makeup assignments for missed work, and you’re much more likely just to see a student disappear from an online course offering,” he explains. If the subcommittee votes

the proposal down, the online college becomes a conference item between the California Senate and Assembly. If it does pass, then it goes to a separate vote of the full budget committees of both houses.

according to Reuters. He called Xi a “world class poker player” who he would like to think is committed to peace in the Korean peninsula. “If it doesn’t happen, maybe it will happen later,” Trump said about the summit. “It may not work out for June 12.” Asked if he would prefer denuclearization over time

or all at once, Trump said, “all in one would be nice.” If Kim follows through on denuclearization, “I will guarantee his safety,” Trump said, adding that leaders of South Korea, China, and Japan have told him they would invest large amounts of money to “help make North Korea great.” “It’ll all work out. I can’t tell you how or why. But it always does,” Trump told reporters. Moon said that Trump has been able to achieve “dramatic positive change” in relations with North Korea. He is confident that Trump will be able to make the upcoming summit successful and “end the Korean war,” he said. Acknowledging there are voices in the US skeptical about the summit and the prospects of denuclearization, Moon said that the “fate and future” of the Korean Peninsula hinge on it. Asked about his vision for the Korean peninsula, Trump said he was “looking at having two very successful Koreas”

at first, and then it would be “largely up to them” whether to unify down the road. He described the border between the two Koreas as “artificial” and imposed mainly by the US, during the 1950s Korean War. The Trump-Kim summit was scheduled after a historic meeting between Kim and Moon and Panmunjom in April. However, the North Korean rhetoric escalated after US national security adviser John Bolton brought up the “Libyan model” of denuclearization, with Pyongyang pointing out that Washington led a “regime change” operation in Libya in 2011 after Tripoli surrendered it’s nuclear research materials to the US in 2003. Trump distanced himself from Bolton’s remarks last week but told North Korea that the Libyan model of regime change might ensue if the peace talks fail. His vice president Mike Pence later echoed the message.

Summit with North Korea in June may be delayed – Trump

By Desert Star Staff The summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jongun “may or may not happen” as scheduled, depending on Kim’s actions in the coming days, Trump said in a meeting with the South Korean president. Trump and Moon Jaein met at the White House on Tuesday to discuss

the summit, scheduled for June 12 in Singapore. Both remained optimistic about the meeting, though Trump said he was “not happy” about the recent changes in North Korean attitude. The tone from Pyongyang changed after Kim’s second meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump told reporters before the meeting,

Desert Healthcare District & Foundation Launches Website

CVHIP.com Includes Links to Almost 1,000 Health and Wellness Resources in Coachella Valley

By Desert Star Staff PALM SPRINGS, CA – Desert Healthcare District & Foundation, in partnership with the City of Palm Springs, unveiled a significant new internet-based platform, providing access to free and low-cost services and resources to support the health and wellness of everyone in the Coachella Valley. Called CV HIP (Coachella Valley Health Info Place), the easy-to-navigate site is a free online information center with links to nearly 1,000 Coachella Valley health and wellness resources and providers. The site (in multiple languages) enables anyone to find providers that offer programs on a wide range of wellness and healthy living topics, including information about health screenings, Diabetes, food & nutrition, senior services, sexual health, counseling, pediatric healthcare, local sports & recreation, food assistance, financial & legal aid, and much more. “Creating CV HIP was an

extensive project and one that had not been done before in the Coachella Valley.” said Herb K. Schultz, Desert Healthcare District & Foundation CEO. “We held extensive conversations with area social workers and case managers to understand the challenges they experienced while connecting people with the services they needed. These conversations revealed a common issue: whether the clients were seeking information on food pantries, substance abuse treatment, housing alternatives, or employment services, it was a challenge to efficiently match people with the community organizations that could help them.” The first step in this process was to identify all of the free and low-cost services/resources available to Coachella Valley residents and merge them into an easy to navigate website, available in multiple languages. Even the best websites can be out of date, which meant that the District team needed to establish a method for the

public and service providers to update their information on an ongoing basis. To support this, service providers in CVHIP will be contacted on a regular basis to keep their information current, thus ensuring an accurate database. Palm Springs Mayor pro tem J.R. Roberts has been a champion of the project since funds were allocated from the proceeds of the ‘Mayor’s Healthy Planet Healthy You 10 mile and 5 K Race and Wellness Festival.’ “This is a major advance in terms of helping people to get, and stay, healthy. CV HIP is for the mother dealing with food insecurity… not knowing where to go for urgently needed food for her family. CV HIP is for the person that is homeless and struggling with the summer heat. CV HIP can point that person to a cooling center and possibly save a life. CV HIP is for first responders, 911 operators, and social workers – everyone – to help find free and low-cost healthcare

and services for those that are distressed. CVHIP.com is the ‘ultimate healthcare Google for the Valley.” Congressman Raul Ruiz, M.D. said of the project “Everyone deserves access to high quality, affordable health care and other social services that give them the opportunity to lead a productive and healthy life. One of the key access barriers found in my 2010 Coachella Valley Health Care Initiative was that many residents simply didn’t know what local services were available to them. This tool will help solve the problem. I am thrilled to see that this new resource will be free and available to all residents of the Coachella Valley.” Echoing Dr. Ruiz, Riverside County Supervisor V. Manuel Perez added: “Having worked in the field of community health, I know education and outreach to our community members are important. Many times, individuals are unaware of services that are available and, for this reason, don’t access them. CV HIP will help people find and access health resources available in the community, from their community health center to events such as the Flying Doctors or the Migrant Health Resource Fair. This Web site is a great use of technology and a valuable guide that will go a long way toward creating healthier communities.” For more information about Desert Healthcare District & Foundation, please visit DHCD. org or call 760-323-6113.

Supreme Court Ruling Called Blow to Workers’ Rights

Civil-rights advocates say that after Monday’s Supreme Court decision, forced arbitration will become standard practice for employers. (MarkThomas/Pixabay) By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK – Civilrights advocates say a Supreme Court ruling handed down Monday will sweep many discrimination and harassment claims against employers under the rug.

18

DesertSTAR

The ruling in Epic Systems v. Lewis says corporations can require employees to sign arbitration clauses that keep them from joining classaction lawsuits over wage and civil-rights violations, including discrimination

and sexual harassment. Seema Nanda, executive vice president of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, says the ruling is particularly troubling in light of the Me-Too movement. “We know that when women are able to band together and bring an action against their employer, they have strength,” she says. “It’s very difficult for employees to go through these things one by one, and arbitration is just not as strong a forum as the courts are.” Supporters of arbitration say it is cheaper and more efficient than litigation through the courts. But according to Nanda, arbitration often favors the corporations. “First of all, it’s just one individual against a company, whereas in a class-action lawsuit, you can have the power of the employees,” May 23, 2018

she notes. “The rules are much stronger in federal court. Often, the remedies are stronger as well.” She adds that the corporations often choose the arbitrator, leaving the employee without representation. Justice Neil Gorsuch, who was appointed by President Donald Trump, wrote the majority opinion in the fiveto-four decision. But as Nanda points out, Gorsuch acknowledged that Congress can act to prohibit corporations from forcing employees to agree to arbitration. “They can legislate around this decision, which is very troubling and really undermines what we think are employees’ rights under the National Labor Relations Act,” explains Nanda. The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights had joined in an amicus brief filed by the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund in the case.

“Soft Power” a triumph at LA’s Ahmanson Theatre By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) The American Theatre is in a state of flux and has been since the millennium arrived. Satisfaction is the enemy of innovation, growth, and thinking outside the box. America for all its creativity, eagerness for new shiny objects and ideas, however, is quite comfortable in its various creative arts ruts. According to German writer and dramatist Bertolt Brecht, “The role of the arts should not be limited to just holding up a mirror to society, but be a hammer with which to shape it”. Controversial? Yes. Today’s playwrights and writers are churning out creative work that your fathers and grandfathers would not necessarily approve. This is the internet/digital age. Communications and information comes to the creative table quickly and changes just as quickly. One has to be constantly plugged in to be relevant. Playwright David Henry Hwang’s newest musical play “Soft Power”, now enjoying its world premiere on the stage of The Ahmanson Theatre, Los Angeles, is an excellent example of readdressing the domination of White culture of the West to the rising prominence and influence of Asian societies along the ‘silk roads’ of the East. Hwang is a prolific American-born playwright of Chinese ethnicity. Trying to explain the two act plot of Hwang’s brilliant comedic and insightful, think-piece is complicated but not inscrutable. It’s a little akin to Winston Churchill’s famous quote of trying to untangle the philosophy and the politics of the Russian government to a fellow politician. “Russia is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. It’s complicated, but there is a key.” One ‘key’ is the collaboration of Jeanine Tesori and Mr. Hwang as co-creators, with Ms. Tesori’s wonderfully evocative musical score and additional lyrics that so beautifully captures the spirit of the East and then blends it with the culture of the West. Playwright Hwang, who penned the Tony-winning production “M. Butterfly” (1988) and Drama Desk nominated “Yellow Face” (2007) and the delightful comedy “Chinglish” (2011), among others, challenges his audience to confront and accept the idea that the planet has more than one alpha-male dominating culture and society. In many ways, the musical goes against a self-image that most Americans hold dear: rugged individualism and American exceptionalism. “Soft Power” is a deliciously directed musical by Leigh Silverman, who infuses her mainly Asian cast with high energy performances, www.desertstarweekly.com

especially from the ensemble performers. For those who follow Mr. Hwang’s career arc, they will note the echoes in this stellar production reminiscent of his delightful 2011 comedy “Chinglish”. That story featured a love affair between an American business executive and a female Chinese government official while he was on a business trip in China. Ms. Silverman directed “Chinglish”, as well. Both plays explore the language and cultural gaps between Chinese and Americans; a frequent theme in Mr. Hwang’s body of work, however, this time the romantic algorithmic connection deals with Zoe, an American woman (Alyse Alan Louis) and a Chinese gentleman (Conrad Ricamora), both of whom are the possessors of wonderful singing voices. Ms. Louis belts with high energy in in Act One leading the ensemble in a series of hilarious musical numbers that allude to America’s current political machinations and explanations without ever referring directly to the current inhabitant in charge. The name is selfevident based on the hoops and hollers, and the laughter emanating from the audience. Remember, it’s a musical comedy – depending, however, on one’s political leaning. Conrad Ricamora as Xue Xing, reflects not only his personal philosophy, but that of China’s aspiring new role in global politics. In the play, they eschew raw military or hard power, preferring the label of practitioners of ‘soft power’. They prefer to influence world opinions with trade, political ideas, and peaceful non-military solutions as a way of becoming the new world leader. Mr. Ricamora , renders a terrifically polished, stylish, understated performance, as the avatar of Chinese ambitions in the future. There is a third major character in this highly entertaining production: None other than that of David Henry Whang himself. The actor who portrays Mr. Hwang on stage is Francis Jue who delivers a solid, empathetic, portrayal as the quasi-narrator of the musical. I would humbly submit that perhaps, Mr. Hwang is a fan of the great movie director Alfred Hitchcock, who always inserted an image of himself as character into every film he made. However, it’s not that unusual in Mr. Hwang’s case. He was a character in his 2007 play “Yellow Face”, playing himself. In Act Two, the stage heats up again with the performance of Ms. Louis. This time she’s playing Hillary Clinton. Yes, that Hillary Clinton! It’s a dynamite performance by a consummate singer/ actor/ dancer at the top her game. No more spoiler alerts from me, but remember it is a political comedy/parody production and should be experienced in person. Director Silverman gives her skilled

cast the green light to go full speed ahead, which they do in spades. The standing ovation at the curtain call lasted for over a minute. I checked my watch. It was richly deserved. On the reality check aspect of the overall production, I would submit that the political comedy lacked subtlety at times, and had a tendency to hit one over the head with a hammer, making sure we got the bit and the metaphor. It may be a bit sophisticated or too on-the-nosey for some, but the audience on opening night definitely got it. The Ahmanson Theatre is the proper sized house and stage that gives Scenic Designer David Zinn plenty of leeway in delivering a performing space for this excellent production to breathe. Supporting cast members include: Billy Bustamonte; Jon Hoche, Kendyl Ito; Austin Ku; Raymond J. Lee; Jaygee Macapugay; Daniel May; Paul Heesang Miller; Kristen Faith Oei; MariaChristina Oliveras; and Geena Quintos. Well done all. In the technical department led by director Silverman whose impeccable timing throughout the evening keeps

Conrad Ricamora and Kendyl Ito the audience riveted and fully engaged. The costume designs of Anita Yavich, and the lighting design by Mark Barton flood the Ahmanson stage with color and light becoming a visual feast for the eyes and the ears, along with the Sound Design of Kai Harada. The high-octane choreography of Sam Pinkleton

keeps everyone on their toes under the musical baton of Music Supervisor Chris Fenwick. ‘Soft Power”, makes for a splendid evening of music, dance, and comedy that performs at the Ahmanson Theatre and runs through June 10, 2018.
