LGBTs Stonewall Gardens By KMIR News Staff PALM SPRINGS, Ca. - A senior assisted-living complex for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people will open in Palm Springs this summer. Billed as the first of its kind in Palm Springs, Stonewall Gardens will have 24 units, according to its operator, Northstar Senior Living.
The development at 2150 N. Palm Canyon Drive was built in the 1950s as a bungalow-style resort, and renovations started in March, publicist Tim O’Bayley said. “As an LGBT-centric community, we anticipate that the majority of our residents will be of that background.
However, our community is one of inclusion, and if a non-LGBT person or couple wishes to make Stonewall Gardens their home, we would welcome them,’’ said Steven Kregel, Northstar’s chief operating officer. John Raymond, Palm Springs’ director of Community and Economic Development,
By Jennifer Kay and Suzette Laboy Associated Press MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) Bunny Yeager, a model turned pin-up photographer who helped jump-start the career of then-unknown Bettie Page, died Sunday, her agent said. She was 85 years old. Yeager died at a North Miami hospice where she had been for about a week, her agent, Ed Christin said. Yeager’s legacy is her cultural impact, from pin-up photography and fashion, helping to popularize the bikini, and influencing other artists such as Cindy Sherman, who read Yeager’s guides on photographing nudes and making self-portraits, Christin
said. “Anyone in Miami in the 1950s who wanted a bikini would come to her, and she’d make one,” he said. Yeager became famous for making everyday women, from stay-at-home mothers to airline attendants, feel comfortable enough to bare it all. Her photos of Page in a leopard-print bathing suit standing next to a real cheetah are still well-known today. “They all wanted to model for me because they knew that I wouldn’t take advantage of them,” Yeager told The Associated Press during a 2013 interview. “And I wouldn’t push them to do nude if they didn’t
want to do nudes. It wasn’t a day when nude photography was prevalent.” Linnea Eleanor Yeager was born in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, on March 13, 1929, and in the 1940s became one of the most photographed models in Miami during her early career. She later turned the camera on herself, posing in bathing suits she handmade for her 5-foot-9 frame. Her selfportraits were turned into a book, “How I Photograph Myself,” in 1964. She began taking photos of Page in 1954 as she began her career behind the camera.

called the development “exciting news’’ and “much needed.’’ The complex will have onebedroom, shared and studio apartments with patios, open-air dining, an outdoor entertainment area, educational, social and recreational programs, a full-time licensed nurse and a 24-hour staff, O’Bayley said.
Initial costs start at $3,500, and monthly costs begin at $3,850 based on the level of care the person needs. Reservations and deposits are being accepted. A model apartment should be open for tours in July. More information can be requested from www.stonewallgardens. com.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause Thousands of men, women and children braved the heat to be a part of the 16th Annual Memorial Day Flower Drop at the Palm Springs Air Museum on May 26th. A C-47 and a B-25 flew in tandem for the flower drop. The B-25 flew low over the Air Museum and dropped thousands of Red and White Carnations to honor those service men and women who lost their lives protecting our country. The White Carnations were to represent those that died in WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam. The Red Carnations represented those we lost in Desert Storm, Iraq, Afghanistan and all other conflicts in recent years. The Coachella Valley Boys and Girls Club’s Heatwave Jazz Band entertained the crowd prior to the program and the flower drop. There were Flight Exhibitions throughout the day, and a flight could be purchased for rides in a AT-6 Texan and PT-17 Stearman. There were vendors explaining the history of flight, food and memorabilia stations. Children could visit the Major General Ken Miles Aviation Science Center to learn about flight and the many different wars. This is the 70th anniversary of D-Day, and the special guest of honor was the Deputy Counsul General of the French Consulate-Los Angeles, Fabrice Maiolino. Speakers included Raul Ruiz and Brian Nestande that honored Maiolino with awards and memorabilia. The program included other speakers, a 21-gun salute and anthems played to the crowd as they held their hands over their hearts or sang along. The crowd in the hangar was dispersed so the B-25 could take flight for the flower drop. Once the planes were in the air the crowd filled the area for the flowers to drop where they could get a flower as a souvenir. The plane flew low over the Museum, and the flowers were dropped accurately onto the crowd.

What Every Small Business Needs to Know By desert Star Staff For small businesses, smart marketing is crucial for success. But what does that mean in today’s fast paced, highly wired world? While online and mobile communication has gained importance in recent years, experts say that face-to-face engagement with people who matter to you and your organization remains invaluable. “In a crowded marketplace, making a positive and lasting impression is crucial,” says Skip Cox, Board Chairman for the International Association of Exhibitions and Events. “There’s no substitution for an in-person

meeting.” No matter the size or focus area of your business, exhibitions, trade shows and other forms of face-to-face meetings can be a powerful business tool, helping with sales, networking, education and business research. But how do you make the most of your time at face-to-face events? Cox is offering some top tips: • Socialize: Before the event, identify who you want to engage with while you’re there. Engage those individuals in online dialogue -- retweet them, reply to their messages and join their groups. This will make the initial in-person conversation easier. Social and mobile media can help you take conversations from online to offline and back again. • Be more than your booth: Your booth is not the only presence your brand has at an event. Without going too far or coming across as unprofessional, wear something that aligns with your company to help you stand out. Consider the standards of your industry, the image of your business and the tone of the event, and find something that fits with you and your business.

that your association is a planned development. This matters because the issue is much narrower with condominiums, where the separate interest is also much narrower. Civil Code 4710 protects non-commercial signs in a separate interest, subject to some important limitationssigns cannot larger than 9 square feet, and banners not larger than 15. Per the statute, signs cannot be made of “lights, roofing, siding, paving materials, flora, or balloons, or any other similar building, landscaping, or decorative component, or include the painting of architectural surfaces.” So, for example, a homeowner could not paint a sign onto their house or garage. If a sign is placed onto a framework (such as mounted on a roof), I think an association could reasonably restrict the framework (but not the sign). With condominiums, the

• Connect your connections: Introduce people who may benefit from knowing one another. Both parties will be grateful to you and you’ll be known as someone who “knows people.” • Promote: Get your name out there. Use promotional products strategically. Investigate sponsorship opportunities. • Play by the rules: Don’t take advantage of the audience attending an official event by creating non-affiliated concurrent activities or events, or use public areas to drum up personal business without actually paying to participate. This will only build negative buzz for you and your business. • Strategize: Making connections is half the battle. Making the right connections is the more important half. Do your legwork so you can figure out exactly who you want to target. Whether you’re just starting out or you’re a well-established player, getting to know the people who matter can help your business. • Ask, don’t assume: Many event organizers are familiar with the struggles startups and small businesses go through and will
By Kelly G. Richardson, esq. CCAL Dear Kelly: Our neighborhood has CC&Rs and a review committee. Some of the things in the CC&Rs seem kind of discriminatory or snobby to me, so I am on a committee to possibly drop things that members agree to. Do we need an attorney to do that? B.F., La Jolla
Dear Mr. Richardson Our Association Declaration of Covenants Conditions and Restrictions contained the following: “No Signs of any kind … other than signs … advertising the property for sale shall be erected, posted, pasted, painted or displayed upon any building or other structures thereon without the prior written approval of the Association.” The law firms we retained never mentioned the fact that this CC& R might not be legal in regards to a political sign. A new owner has threatened our HOA with a lawsuit over this sign restriction. It is my understanding after viewing online sources that a new owner when they buy the home and receive a copy of the current CC& Rs has agreed to the CC&R’s with their purchase, and has no grounds to challenge the CC& R’s. Are our CC&R’s legal?? Thank you for any assistance you might provide us. R.J, Hemet
Dear B.F.: Your association CC&Rs is an important and complicated document, and the Davis-Stirling Common Interest Development Act has much to say about what they should or should not contain. Having a lawyer involved early in the process may save your committee wasted effort. From time to time a committee will present me with a draft upon which they have worked many dozens of hours, only to discover from me that much of their suggested changes would conflict with the law. I understand attorneys are expensive, but the Dear R.J.: expense is warranted when it I am assuming from would prevent hours of wasted reviewing your HOA’s web site May 28, 2014
separate interest is normally much narrower in scope, and so condominium owners normally have fewer options in this regard –meaning much less use of signs. Also, Civil Code 712 and 713 (outside of the CID Act) protect the right of homeowners to post reasonable “for sale” signs on their property. If your association governing documents contain invalid restrictions, it’s a good idea to amend and remove them to avoid future confusion and disputes with owners. Parolee Sentenced to 75+ Years for Killing Teen
By KMIR News Staff INDIO, Ca. - A Coachella parolee who killed a 16-yearold boy outside the Boys & Girls Club in Coachella was sentenced today to 75 years to life in prison. Angel Anthony Esparza, 30, was convicted in March of the Dec. 3, 2009, killing of Angel Luna. He also was tried on two additional counts of murder in connection with the Dec. 19, 2009 killing of two farmworkers in
Thermal, but the jury deadlocked 9-3 in favor of guilt, and Esparza will be retried on those counts. The two cases had been filed separately, but a judge ordered them consolidated in November. ``Three head shots, three execution-style murders -all three at the hands of the defendant,’’ Deputy District Attorney Jake Silva told jurors. Luna dropped off some homework on the afternoon of Dec. 3 at Coachella Valley

Adult School near Eighth Street and Orchard Avenue, which is near the Boys & Girls Club in Coachella. Surveillance video showed him riding his bike to the school and entering a classroom, as well as a ``shadowy figure’’ in the backyard of a home on Ninth Street, Silva said. Witnesses saw Luna with someone wearing a black hooded sweatshirt near or at the Boys & Girls Club, and two volleys of shots were heard, according to the prosecution. After the gunfire, Esparza ran into a home on Ninth Street and asked a woman for a ride, Silva said. En route to Indio, the woman heard Esparza say, ``That fool was dead before he hit the ground,’’ the prosecutor said. He said Esparza saw reports of Luna’s killing the next morning and told another woman with whom he spent the night that ``someone ratted me out.’’ Christina Zapata and her daughter, Cecilia Morin, let Esparza take refuge in their trailer in Thermal and, on Dec. 19, Gregorio Juarez and Pedro Garcia arrived with plans to pay to have sex with Morin, according to the prosecutor. As the men were undressing in Morin’s bedroom, Esparza burst in with a gun, ordered them
onto the floor, took their cash and ATM cards, bound them and put duct tape over their eyes and mouths, Silva said. Zapata and Esparza drove the victims to a vineyard at Avenue 58 and Pierce Street, he said. ``Christina Zapata will tell you the defendant dragged both individuals into the vineyard, and you’ll hear they were never seen alive again,’’ he said. Zapata’s boyfriend drove Esparza, who had a can of gasoline with him, to the vineyard, Silva said. The next morning, the men’s bodies were found ``burned beyond recognition,’’ he said. Both were shot in the head. When Esparza was arrested Dec. 24, 2009, in San Bernardino, authorities found a gun with ballistic characteristics that matched the one used to kill Garcia, and a black hooded sweatshirt, Silva said. Morin and Zapata each pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder last year in exchange for sentences of 15 years to life in prison. Defense attorney John Patrick Dolan said Esparza did run into Luna the day the teen was killed, but had no reason to hurt the boy. After the shooting, witnesses
told authorities they saw some people run to a vehicle, and Esparza, also a witness, ran because he was on parole, Dolan said. ``You will find there is no physical evidence in the area where Angel Luna was shot that relates to Angel Esparza,’’ Dolan said. ``You’ll learn there is no eyewitness that says, `Angel Esparza is the person who committed the shooting.’’ Regarding the murders of Juarez and Garcia, Zapata and Morin, arrested in the deaths of the farm workers, heard about Luna’s death and made a deal with prosecutors, Dolan said. ``Each of them will point the finger at Angel Esparza and get second-degree murder,’’ Dolan said. Dolan said there was no evidence that put Esparza in the trailer. Esparza told investigators he got the gun seized during his arrest ``on the street a couple days ago.’’ Dolan said it wouldn’t make sense for a murderer to keep the gun. The hooded sweatshirt found when Esparza was arrested ``does not yield identification of a human being,’’ Dolan said. Courtesy of KMIR www.kmir.com
Air Quality Warning for Valley By KMIR News Staff PALM DESERT, Ca. - Air pollution levels will edge up into the ``unhealthful for sensitive groups’’ range in parts of Inland Empire and in the Coachella Valley Tuesday, the AQMD warned today. Ozone levels will be at an estimated index level of 111 in the San Bernardino Valley and Coachella Valley, and an

Our Heads Talk To Our Hearts by Art Kunkin Mr. Life extension Scientists are now telling us in some 600 research papers and a few popular books that we actually have three brains, not just one brain in the head. There is the enteric (gut) brain containing 200 to 500 million neurons, the cardiac (heart brain) 50 to 120,000 neurons and the cephalic (head) brain with some 50 to 100 billion neurons. (No, I haven’t personally counted these brain cells; I’m just quoting from the scientific literature). This literature emphasizes that these three brains – our gut intuition, our heart-felt emotions and our head-based creative powers – can and should be used in harmony to make real and lasting changes through our decisions and actions. However, it is implied that many individuals, perhaps most, tend to more or less exclusively use one of their brains most of the time. In this view, the world is divided into four types of people. The great majority consists of three types: 1) Many mental people (scientists, managers and those who refer to “logic as their best compass); 2) Many emotional people (those in all walks of life who emphasize using their “feelings much of the time); and 3) some mostly physical people (athletes and those responding to events much of the time with their bodies). A more balanced fourth type consists of the few who use all three brains in rotation: mental abilities when required, switching to emotional reactions when most useful and being physically powerful when the situation demands that. Unfortunately, history shows that this creative fourth type is often in short supply in most human civilizations, including our present one. Of course, all humans use all their three brains at various times. No one that I know is entirely mental, entirely emotional or entirely physical. However, many of our human problems today seem to be rooted in the fact that primarily mental people
often don’t seem capable of being sufficiently emotional or loving when that response is required by another person. Likewise, those who frequently display emotional responses often are criticized by others as not being sufficiently logical at times. Given that this is a somewhat accurate description of human behavioral problems and without getting into a long description of the history leading to this state of affairs, what can we do on an individual level to solve these disparities in our ordinary relationships. How can we become kinder and more understanding in our families and friendships? How can our heads get along with our hearts? How can your head communicate with another’s heart? How can your heart trust another person’s head as expressed by their words? How can you use your own three brains better? Not easily, for sure! The conscious head brain is often marked by slippery, egotistic, and concealed dualistic motivations of love and kindness on one hand and greed on the other. The heart brain is part of what we call the subconscious mind, eager to be a listener and trusting in nature but so often damaged by its previous relations with selfish minds that it cannot relax and be loving. What can be done to make the head convincing to the heart of the other so that both hearts can be trusting? As I see it, the key to trust is to demonstrate a balanced and truthful relationship between the conscious mind and the subconscious heart, first inside the individuals concerned and then between them. However, in our culture where we tend to over-emphasize the conscious mind and don’t pay attention to how the neural structure of the heart learns, remembers, senses and feels, we “talk inside and to our head but not to the heart. Therefore, I suggest that we attempt to “talk or communicate with our own heart and the hearts or others, as difficult and as impossible as that sounds in our materialistic culture. The

Experts: Mass Murderers are Hard to Predict
By Christopher Weber and Alicia Chang Associated Press GOLETA, Calif. (AP) Colorado movie theater shooter James Holmes. Sandy Hook school attacker Adam Lanza. And now Elliot Rodger. All were young loners with no criminal history who went on shooting sprees, leaving devastated families in their wake. Mass murderers tend to have a history of pent-up frustration and failures, are socially isolated and vengeful, blaming others for their unhappiness, experts say. “They all display deluded thinking and a lot of rage about feeling so marginalized,” James Garbarino, a professor of psychology at Loyola University Chicago, said in an email. Since mass killings are rare, scholars say there’s no way to predict who has deadly intentions, let alone who will reach a breaking point and take action. Past violence is a clue, but in Rodger’s case, police did not see him as a threat to himself or others during a welfare check weeks before Friday night’s rampage near the University of California, Santa Barbara that left six victims dead and 13 injured. Rodger died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head after a shootout with deputies, ending a night of terror in this tight-knit seaside campus community as the semester drew to a close. Pinpointing a mass killer
“is not an exact science. We don’t have a foolproof way of predicting” who will turn violent, said Risdon Slate, a professor of criminology at Florida Southern College. Before Rodger stabbed three male UCSB students in his apartment and cruised around in his black BMW firing at sorority girls and strangers, he left a trail of YouTube videos and a 140-page manifesto ranting against women and couples and lamenting his lack of a sex life. In his postings, Rodger, a 22-year-old community college student and son of a Hollywood director, said he was a lonely and frustrated virgin. “I’m sexually attracted to girls. But girls are not sexually attracted to me. And there’s a major problem with that - a major problem. That’s a problem that I intend to rectify. I in all my magnificence and power, I will not let this fly. It’s an injustice that needs to be dealt with,” Rodger said in one of the videos. Recent mass shootings involved young men described as loners who had trouble fitting in. In July 2012, 24-yearold Holmes opened fire at a midnight screening of a Batman film, killing a dozen moviegoers. Five months later, 20-year-old Lanza shot 20 first-graders and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. Experts who study mass murderers say the vast majority
of lonely and angry people don’t commit violence, which makes it difficult to know who will snap. “We can point to all the warning signs we missed. But they’re yellow flags. They’re not red flags until blood is spilled,” said James Alan Fox, a criminal justice professor at Northeastern University who has written several books on mass murders. Before the killings, Rodger’s mother became alarmed about bizarre videos he posted and alerted authorities in April. But Rodger was able to convince deputies that he was not a risk to himself or others - conditions that would have allowed them to take him into custody under California law. Family friend Simon Astaire said Rodger was “very much a boy of solitude” who spoke few words. “At a Christmas party, I went out to get air and there he was standing alone. I apologized for disturbing his peace, and he said it was all right. I asked, ‘How are you doing?’ He said, ‘I find things difficult.’ I walked away thinking that he was very sad lonely boy,” Astaire told The Associated Press. In his writings, Rodger said he had seen several therapists throughout his life, but it’s unclear what he was being treated for. Experts say people with mental illness generally are not more violent than the rest of the population. A rare exception was Jared Loughner, who fatally shot six people in Arizona
Jose Cardoso pays his respects at a makeshift memorial in front of the IV Deli Mart, where part of Friday night’s mass shooting took place by a drive-by shooter Sunday, May 25, 2014, in the Isla Vista area near Goleta, Calif. in 2011 in an attack that gravely injured Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. After his arrest, Loughner was diagnosed with schizophrenia. On Sunday, several security guards stood watch outside the apartment building where Rodger lived. Memorials sprung up there, outside the sorority house where two coeds were shot nearby and at a deli where a male student was shot. The university planned a memorial Tuesday afternoon at Harder Stadium on the 21,685-student campus to mourn and remember the six who were killed. The day’s classes were canceled.
Garrett Schneider, a 22-year-old student studying physical anthropology and linguistics, was touched by the tragedy, but he said he won’t view fellow students with more suspicion because of it. “I figure people like this are far and few between,” he said. “If you read his writing and look at his videos, it’s obvious that he’s far out there.” Chang reported from Los Angeles. Liam Neeson seems to be everywhere lately. On Friday, he will make you laugh in the Seth MacFarlane comedy “A Million Ways to Die in the West” and on June 10, his edge of your seat thriller “Non- Stop” will be available for home viewing in a Blu-ray Combo Pack that includes a Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD with ultraviolet. “NonStop” also stars Julianne Moore, Michelle Dockery (TVs “Downton Abbey”) and 2013’s Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o (“12 years a Slave”). In the film, Neeson plays a U.S. Air Marshal on a transatlantic flight. Things go awry when he receives a cryptic message telling him that a passenger will die every 20 minutes unless $150 million is transferred into an off-shore account. From Universal, rated PG-13 for scenes of intense action and violence and some language and drug reference. Bonus features include “NonStop Action” which is exclusive to the Blu-ray. In this segment, you see how the action is created on a 20’ by 30’ set the shape of a tube. Director Jaume ColletSerra, stunt co-coordinator Mark Vanselow, producer Joel Silver and star Liam Neeson discuss the film’s visceral action sequences. “Suspense at 40.000 Feet” is on both the Blu-ray and DVD. In this bonus feature, you will journey behind the scenes with Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore and the director and producer who discuss the making of this very suspenseful film. For laughs, check out “About Last Night,” a romantic comedy that follows two Los Angeles couples as they journey from the bar to the bedroom in a modern take on a1986 film that starred Demi Moore and Rob Lowe. In this new version the starry-eyed lovers soon discover that what started out as a casual sexy romp may actually lead to togetherness and monogamy. Directed by Steve Pink from a screenplay by Leslye Headland, the film,

like the 1986 original, is based on the play “Sexual Perversity in Chicago” by David Mamet. “About Last Night,” starring Kevin Hart (“Ride Along”), Michael Ealy (“Last Vegas”), Regina Hall (“The Best Man”) and Joy Bryant (TV’s “Parenthood”), is from Sony Pictures and is rated R for sexual content, language and brief drug use. Exclusive featurettes on the Blu-ray are “About Last Night Advice,” “I Love You” and “Word on the Street.” The DVD and Bluray also have a feature entitled “An Un-Romantic Comedy. On June 10 “Deltora Quest: The Complete Series” comes to Home Entertainment. The world-famous anime series, based on the global best-selling book series by Australian author Emily Rodda, aired in the U.S. on The Hub in 2010-2011 and also aired on Cartoon Network in Australia and New Zealand This is the first time the complete series has been made available on DVD in the US, courtesy of Dentsu Entertainment USA Inc. In the series the heroic Lief must
venture into the darkest and most terrible places in Deltora to find the seven magical gems that can free everyone from the evil tyranny of the Shadow Lord. “Visitors” is the latest collaboration between director Godfrey Reggio and composer Philip Glass. Thirty years earlier they created “Koyaanisqatsi.” Now in their latest work, “Visitors,” a stunning wordless portrait of modern life, they are joined by filmmaker Jon Kane. As in their pioneering “Quatsi Trilogy” (Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi and Naqoyqatsi) they again takes us on a fantastic journey of sights and sounds. According to director Reggio “ ‘Visitors is aimed at the solar Plexus, at the appetite within us all, the atmosphere of our soul. I see the film as a meditation, as a transcendental event.” The artistic film is comprised of only seventy-four shots, a series of human, animal and landscape portraits, that manage to take movie watchers on an emotional journey to the moon and back. us with personal interviews with Godfrey Reggio, Philip Glass, Jon Kane and Steven Soderbergh on “The Making of Visitors.” For horror fans Inception Media Group presents “Ghost of Goodnight Lane,” a homage to horror’s greatest kills. The creepy tale takes place in a renovated film studio which just may be haunted as the cast and crew of a horror flick become victims of their own bloody story. After a coworker is found dead, the director and his beautiful actresses begin to piece together a 40-year-old puzzle. The key to survival is held by a mystifying old woman who reveals a murder secret with a shocking and sinister twist, but will the movie makers get out of this scenario alive? The film stars Lacey Chabert (“Mean Girls”), Billy Zane (”Titanic” and “Back to the Future I & II) and Richard Tyson (“Black Hawk Down”). The
film will be available on DVD and VOD on June 10. Steve Coogan, who wrote and starred in the Academy Award nominated film “Philomena,” reprises his popular role as the iconic Alan Partridge, the famous local radio DJ and one-time talk show host. Now Alan finds himself at the center of a siege when a disgruntled fellow DJ (Colm Meaney) decides to hold their station hostage after learning that he’s getting fired by the new management. “Alan Partridge,” available June 10 on Blu-ray and DVD from Magnolia Home Entertainment, is rated R for language, brief violence and nudity. Bonus features include: “The Making of Alan Partridge,” “Behind the Scenes” and “AXIS TV: A Look at Alan Partridge.”

June is Great Outdoors Month: Three Tips to Get Going
Summer is here, and though cooler weather activities can be a blast, many experienced outdoor adventurers and weekend warriors alike look forward to warm weather to truly rev up their engines. Ever since 1986, each June has been affectionately referred to as “Great Outdoors Month,” enticing thousands of adventurers to thaw out after a long winter and kick-start their summers with new excursions and activities. And there are plenty of great ways to get up, get out and get going. Turn Off Your Phone It may sound blasphemous in today’s gadget-crazed world, but turning off your phone, tablet or laptop is a great way to create the impetus to go exploring. Turning off your gadgets can help you turn on to the great outdoors -- be it through camping, fishing, rock-climbing, cycling or even just enjoying a family walk at a local park. room, you’ll need to remember that sweatpants and a tattered t-shirt aren’t always sufficient in the great outdoors. While it’s easy to echo the Boy Scout motto and simply say “be prepared,” you don’t necessarily know where the road will take you. That’s why it’s always a good move to invest in some versatile clothes made from durable high-tenacity fibers and rugged tools that can help you adapt as the environment changes. A good place to start is with a watch designed to withstand the elements, such as Casio’s PRO TREK timepieces which are designed to withstand both hot and cold temperatures and are water-resistant up to 100 meters. And the timepiece maker offers two PRO TREK models that are both equipped with a Triple Sensor which features an altimeter, barometer and compass -- which can help you navigate the twists and turns of almost any outdoor environment. Now you can pack your GPS-enabled phone away and know you won’t be left without a course direction or

Ky. Agriculture Officials Receive Hemp Shipment
By Bruce Schreiner Associated Press FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) Tiny hemp seeds that produced a drawn-out legal fight were freed from confinement and delivered Friday to Kentucky’s Agriculture Department for experimental plantings, marking a limited comeback for the non-intoxicating cousin of marijuana. The seeds from Italy that
drew so much suspicion from federal drug officials were unceremoniously unloaded from a UPS truck and then weighed by state agriculture officials. The shipment featuring 13 seed varieties came in at 286 pounds. It marked an uneventful conclusion to a standoff that pitted the state’s Agriculture Department against the federal government. for pilot projects across Kentucky could start as early as Friday, with plans to put the seeds in Kentucky soil in coming days. State Agriculture Commissioner James Comer, a Republican who sees hemp as a potential cash crop for farmers and a jobs creator for processors, said the arrival of the seeds puts Kentucky at the forefront of efforts to reintroduce the long-banned crop in the United States. “As this program grows, so too will opportunities for our farmers and jobs for all Kentuckians,” he said in a statement. The seeds were detained for two weeks by U.S. customs officials in Louisville, Kentucky, delaying pilot growing projects meant to gauge the crop’s potential. Six universities are assisting with the research for the highly versatile crop. Eastern Kentucky University agriculture professor Bruce Pratt said his team prepared 3 acres on the school’s farm for hemp plantings. “We’re excited to get this research project started,” he said Friday. The crop thrived in Kentucky decades ago, and he thinks it has potential as a viable crop for the state’s farmers. His research team will assess the success of different seed varieties, which could someday help guide Kentucky farmers if the crop is eventually allowed to take its place in production agriculture. The key would be developing markets for the crop, which could lure
processors to Kentucky, he said. “If we can get some of that competitive advantage being one of the first states to be able to develop this as a crop to attract those processors, it has potential,” Pratt said. “It’s not going to happen overnight. It will take several years to fully develop.” Growing hemp without a federal permit was banned in 1970 due to its classification as a controlled substance related to marijuana. Hemp and marijuana are the same species, Cannabis sativa, but hemp has a negligible amount of THC, the psychoactive compound that gives marijuana users a high. Hemp’s comeback resulted from the new federal farm bill, which allows state agriculture departments to designate hemp pilot projects for research in states such as Kentucky that allow hemp growing. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky crafted the hemp language inserted into the farm bill. “Now that the seeds have been freed, it’s time to get them in the ground and begin our lawful pilot programs to explore the potential for job creation in our commonwealth,” he said in a statement. Hemp has historically been used for rope but has many other uses: clothing and mulch from the fiber; hemp milk and cooking oil from the seeds; and soap and lotions. The seeds were sprung from confinement after federal drug officials approved a permit Thursday that ended the legal
standoff. The breakthrough occurred after attorneys for the Agriculture Department and federal government met twice with a federal judge. The state Agriculture Department sued the federal government after the seed shipment was detained. Defendants included the Justice Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The legal fight was closely watched in other states. Fifteen states have removed barriers to hemp production, according to the group Vote Hemp. Now the focus will shift from the federal courthouse to the small plots where the hemp will be planted. Adam Watson, industrial hemp coordinator for the state Agriculture Department, said each test project in Kentucky should receive enough seeds to successfully complete their research goals. Officials expect to learn much from the first plantings but will need data from a handful of years for more complete crop assessments, he said. “It’s been such a long period of time since any hemp has been grown in Kentucky we really don’t know what we’re dealing with,” he said. “So the purpose of all these research projects is to evaluate how these varieties perform and what’s the best method for Kentucky producers to grow it.”

Powerful Drama Stilltheatre Resonates with Audiences

The Broadway production ran for 1209 performances, with American star Marion Seldes appearing in every single performance of the Broadway run, first in the role of Hester Solomon and then as Dora Strang, Alan’s mother. Most important are religious and ritual sacrifice themes, and the manner in which character Alan Strang constructs a personal theology involving horses and the supreme godhead, “Equus”. “God” in the form of Nugget, with a sexual attraction. The story still has the power to dazzle and enthrall audiences today. The 2009 Broadway revival garnered three Tony Award nominations: Best Leading Actor – Daniel Radcliffe, Best Sound Design – Gregory Clarke, Best Award Lighting Design – David Hershey. The 2014 “Equus” production that just closed at Palm Spring’s flagship theatre, The Palm Canyon Theatre (PCT), was a spell-binding production under the intelligent and deft direction of Steve Fisher. Theatres that stage “Equus” still wrestle with the decision of how much of the on-stage nudity their patrons can take without squirming in their seats. In the case of the PCT production, the sensitivity level of mainly patrons with white hair
By Gitzel Puente INDIO, Ca. - A resident at Desert Cove Assisted Living complains the bus he takes outside the living home is almost never on time, forcing him to limit his therapy time at the Stroke Recovery Center in Palm Springs. “I had a 8:40 pick-up and they picked me up here at 9:10,” says Martin Sherr, describing an incident last week. Sherr takes Sundial, an inexpensive transportation service for people with disabilities who are certified under the Americans with Disabilities Act. He waits for the bus to pick him up outside the assisted living home on his wheelchair. Last year, he was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor impeding him to walk and has relied on physical exercises at the stroke center weekly, but he says Sundial is usually running late, forcing him to cancel the appointment with the therapist altogether. “If you ask the people at the stroke recovery center how often
their bus is on time, they’ll say, they’re always late,” says Sherr. The Chief Operations Officer at Sunline Transit Agency explains there’s a 40-minute window in which customers can be picked up under ADA guidelines. “We have 20 minutes before and after the scheduled timeframe that was scheduled because it is a shared ride, we stagger those pick ups if people are going to the same destination,” says Apolonio Del Toro. He states they typically see a 96 percent on-time performance at Sundial, so it’s rare when they’re late. He adds there might be heavy traffic at times, which might cause the drivers to be late among other things. Sherr says he’s complained several times to their customer service hotline, but to no avail. “Nothing as far as scheduling is concerned. I don’t think that anything has changed,” says Sherr. Del Toro says there could be
was tastefully handled by director Fisher’s inventive staging and the talent of two dedicated actors, which didn’t detract a wit from the power of the playwright’s overall message. A great deal of the success for this splendid production lies squarely on the shoulders of a talented ensemble company of actors. Starring in the role of Dr. Martin Dysart, Alan’s psychiatrist, is Scott Smith in a tour de force effort. He scores as both the narrator of the play and as a character in it. Alan is portrayed by young and gifted actor Jake Phillips, who is just mesmerizing as the mentally disturbed and conflicted stable boy who commits the heinous act of blinding five horses. TV and movie star
Judith Chapman plays Hester Salomon, the court magistrate who believes psychiatrist Dysart has the skill to help Alan come to terms with his violent acts. Outstanding support comes from Yo Younger as Dora Strang, Alan’s well-intentioned religious mother, Corbett Brattin as Frank, Alan’s atheist father, Phylicia Mason as Jill Mason, the young girl who has a tryst with Alan who works for stable owner Harry Dalton, played by Bob Harrison. Linda Cook as Dr. Dysart’s nurse, and the actors who portray the five horses: Stephen Blackwell as Nugget; A.J.Higgins; Daniel Martinez; Nicholas Sloan and Jennifer Stowe lend verisimilitude to the movement of the horses. In the technical department the spare set design by J.W. Layne gives director Fisher plenty of room to stage the nude tryst
scene between Mason and Phillips, which is done with taste and with dramatic intensity that is in keeping with the theatricality of the play. Lighting by Layne provides a stage painted with mood enhancing shadows and dramatic shafts of light. My only “gripe” with the Palm Canyon Theatre is why is it that some of their best work is performed for just three performances? It’s a rhetorical question because I know the answer. It’s just business economics but the public misses out on some excellent productions like the just closed “Equus”. One solution for audiences would be to just purchase a season subscription to the theatre and my “gripe” becomes moot. Contact the Palm Canyon Theatre box office for season subscription information at 760-323-5123.

an easy solution for people like Sherr with fixed schedules called “subscription service.” “Once we determine if it’s two or three times a week, we can offer a subscription service to accommodate those needs,” says Del Toro. Sunline will be working with Sherr in the future to come up with the best solution to ensure he is picked up on time. “It seems to me that they could do a better job. It’s a good service and for people like me who are handicapped, it’s convenient,” says Sherr, not denying this transit service helps him greatly. Sundial buses make about 500 trips daily, serving nine cities across the Coachella Valley. There are currently 31 buses serving the needs of those ADA certified. If you have any questions or concerns with their service, the staff encourages you to contact them directly. Courtesy of KMIR www.kmir.com
Project Begins in Indio By Wesley Rossenrode INDIO, Ca. -Beginning on Tuesday, May 27 2014, the City of Indio will be having a contractor begin major street work at the intersection of Jackson Street and Market Street/Dillon Avenue. The work will consist of installing a new traffic signal at what is now a four-way stop, and reconstructing the entire pavement area within the existing intersection. Work is scheduled to take place between Tuesday, May 27, 2014, and Tuesday, July 29, 2014. Traffic will be impacted as follows: 1. Jackson Street will be reduced from two lanes each

Besides the iconic Page photo, Yeager also shot stills of the Swedish actress Ursula Andress, who starred in the 1962 James Bond film “Dr. No” in a white bikini, a knife sheathed at her side. Yeager said she had few requests when several magazines began to struggle or went out of business over the last decade, but her career returned to the spotlight in 2010 when the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh held an exhibition of her work. Detours will be posted. 3. Dillon Avenue at Jackson Street to 100 feet east will be closed to all traffic from May 27, 2014, to June 20, 2014. Detours will be posted. “And I still get that little tingle when I see the photos on the wall,” she said of the latter-day attention. In her studio, Yeager kept a stash of photos no one had seen in cabinets. They will be included in a new book Yeager was finishing, scheduled for publication in September, celebrating the 60th anniversary of Yeager’s first photo shoots with Page, Christin said. “I’m still feeling like a little child and excited over everything new that comes along in my life,” Yeager said in 2013. “I don’t know where it will lead to yet, but it sounds good to me.” www.desertstarweekly.com

Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call Priority Posting and Publishing at 714-573-1965 for information regarding the Trustee’s Sale or visit the Internet Web site address listed below for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, CA05004419-13-1. s p o rt s Palm Desert’s Bash Tosses School’s First Playoff No-Hitter high school spoRTs By daniel maRinelli
PALM DESERT – With an 8-0 win over the Palmdale High School Falcons last Friday, the Palm Desert Aztecs baseball team vaulted into the second round of the Div. 3 CIF-SS playoffs, have won 13 consecutive games and made a little history on the side. In front of roughly 100 fans at Palm Desert High School, Aztecs (23-6) starting pitcher Andrew Bash tossed the first postseason no-hitter in school history – an impressive, and surprising feat, considering the list of Palm Desert’s baseball records and accomplishments runs longer than China’s Great Wall. Interestingly, Aztecs head coach Darol Salazar planned to take Bash out of the game until he noticed the special scenario. “I was going to actually split it up (between Bash and Brody Kato), Coach Salazar said. “But then, in the sixth inning, I saw he had a no-hitter, I said ‘no, we are going to leave him in, let him pick up a no-hitter in the playoffs.’” Leaving Bash in the game worked two-fold for Palm Desert. In addition to getting the win, the Aztecs will have a well-rested Kato for the second round. Including seven innings of nohit baseball, Bash recorded five strikeouts. Except for a wacky
third inning that left both teams’ coaches, players and fans baffled, impressively, every inning was a 1-2-3 inning for Bash. Behind a leadoff double and run from Travis Moniot, the Aztecs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Things got interesting in the aforementioned bottom half of the third inning, when the Aztecs were penalized two outs because they uncharacteristically batted two players out of order. “Our pitching coach does (the lineup) on his computer,” Coach Salazar said. “His son’s playing in a conference tournament for Sacramento State, so we didn’t do it by computer. One of our coaches wrote it in, and we did a different (order) on the lineup card than the one we gave the umpire. It was my fault.” One reason the Aztecs have been so good for so many years is their ability to turn negatives into positives. Even with the blunder, in the same inning, Palm Desert loaded the bases and Kyle Kabeary roped a bases-clearing double that broke the game wide open for the Aztecs. With a 5-0 lead to start the bottom of the fourth inning, the Aztecs’ offense continued to pile on the runs. Bash helped himself out with an RBI single, followed
by a Kevin Jervis RBI hit-by-pitch, and an Andrew Clark RBI walk that capped the Aztecs scoring. Kyle Kabeary finished the game with a double, a single, three RBIs and a run scored. In addition to his pitching performance, Bash finished 2-4, with a run scored and an RBI. Gil Sauceda ended the game batting 3-4, with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored. This year, the Aztecs are trying to make their fourth CIFSS championship appearance in five years. First, Palm Desert will have to advance beyond the second round, where Bishop Amat ousted them in 2013. The Aztecs second-round game will feature the Aztecs’ other stud pitcher – Brody Kato (1.45 ERA, 8-1, 44 Ks). “(Bash and Kato) are about the same,” Coach Salazar said. “When Kato is on, he throws a little harder, but they’re both the same. If they’re pounding the strike zone like (Bash) was today, it’s tough. Even though he’s throwing 85-86 (mph) –, but they have command of four pitches and both sides of the plate – that’s tough.” On Tuesday, the second round began as the Aztecs played the No. 1 seed out of the Golden West League, the Anaheim-based Andrew Bash tosses Palm Desert’s first no-hitter in school history last Friday. Fire Burns Tree in Palm Springs
May 28, 2014
By Angela Monroe PALM SPRINGS -- Several palm trees are a destroyed, and a roof damaged after a fire in downtown Palm Springs early Sunday morning. Firefighters were dispatched at 1:30 A.M. to the 100 block of North Indian Canyon Drive. Fire charred up to six of the landmark palm trees in downtown Palm Springs. No one was hurt during the fires.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation. KMIR viewer Skip Fredricks sent us video of the fire. He was walking out of the Hard Rock Hotel when he saw the top of the tree completely engulfed in flames. Skip also says a corner of the building’s roof was also on fire. ‘Fireman’s Fireman’ Remembered in Jerusalem New Fire Truck Dedicated in Memory of LA Firefighter David Bailey
By: June Glazer Lisa Bailey, widow of LAFD Capt. David Bailey, with Israeli firefighters and new engine dedicated in his memory. No. 38 is the newest fire truck in Jerusalem. Weighing in at 12 tons of red fiberglass and pulled by a 240 horsepower
engine, it is capable of driving over steep hills, rocks and ditches, and is perfectly suited for the terrain of Israel’s capital city and its surrounding forests. Last week, family and friends gathered at a fire station in Jerusalem’s Givat Mordechai neighborhood to dedicate No.

he was held by those who knew and loved him. “Dave was one of the most highly certified firefighters in the Los Angeles County Fire Department,” said Sam Heller, Bailey’s good friend and the force behind acquiring the fire truck for the Jerusalem fleet. “At his funeral, which was attended by over two thousand firefighters, the fire chief who spoke asked all those assembled to rise. Then he listed multiple accreditations and one by one asked the firefighters to remain standing if they held that accreditation. After going through a long list of possible accreditations all fighters were seated, to which the Los Angeles County Fire Department Chief said, “If Captain David L. Bailey was among us today, he would still be standing. That’s the kind of professional firefighter Dave was.” Bailey, who joined the department in 1994 and made captain in 2009, was certified in Urban Search and Rescue, Swift Water Rescue, Homeland Security, and HAZMAT; was a HAZMAT certified instructor, recruit instructor, and Explorer Academy instructor; and was part of a FEMA team that deployed to Louisiana in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and to Japan following the earthquake and tsunami there in 2011. He died at age 50 when he collapsed while leading wild-land fire training for prison-inmate firefighters. Bailey’s wife, Lisa, donated the truck together with Heller and his wife, Marlies, through Jewish National Fund (JNF) and Friends of Israel Firefighters with a matching donation from the Israeli government. The dedication took place in the presence of firemen from the

In fact, it was a devastating fire on Mount Carmel in Israel’s northern region that got Heller thinking about donating a fire truck in Bailey’s memory. The deadliest forest fire in the country’s history, in 2010 the fire claimed 44 lives and more than 17,000 people had to be evacuated. “I was aware of the Mount Carmel fire and when Dave died it just clicked with me,” said Heller who was born in Israel but immigrated to the US with his family when he was a young boy. “Neither Dave nor I had ever been to Israel, but this cause, in this city, would have been very meaningful to him,” said wife Lisa. “We’re Christian, but Jerusalem is a holy city, no matter what religion you practice. This dedication would have made Dave very happy.”

Givat Mordechai station. “The average fire truck in Israel is 15 to 20 years old and lumbers along at a speed of only about 50 kilometers [35 miles] per hour,” said Yael Levontin, who is the Friends of Israel Firefighters liaison for JNF. “The trucks lack air conditioning and equipment that is essential for extinguishing fires such as modern hoses and nozzles, Nomex masks, and breathing apparatuses. The situation is even worse when dealing with forest fires since conditions there require that vehicles have superior traction and flexibility of response as well as a compact physical profile.” No. 38 is adapted to the needs of Israel’s fire-fighting services and is particularly suitable for use in forests thanks to its compact size, speed, and special equipment, according to Levontin.

Local Men Charged in Vanderbilt Rape Case By Jackie Devereaux PALM DESERT - The attorney for one of the men charged with allegedly tampering with evidence in a Vanderbilt rape case said his client, Joseph Dominick Quinzio, 20, of Palm Desert, received a video of the alleged rape through his phone as a text message. Criminal Defense Attorney Brett Greenfield with the Los Angeles law firm of Kenner and Greenfield admitted that his client, Quinzio, “saw the video
and became very disturbed.” Quinzio, along with Miles Finley, 19, of Bermuda Dunes are friends of Brandon Vandenburg, 20, of Indio. The three young men played football together at Xavier College Preparatory High School in Palm Desert. Vandenburg was arrested for five counts of rape and two counts of sexual battery against an unconscious 21-year-old female Vanderbilt student. Vandenburg is also charged with videotaping the female victim
and passing on those videos to others. The alleged rape and video tapping took place on June 23 in Tennessee. Greenfield said the video was sent to his client. Quinzio and Finley both are charged with tampering with electronic evidence and scheduled to appear in separate courtrooms on Tuesday, Aug. 20 for extradition hearings. “He’s (Quinzio) being accused of somehow tampering with or destroying evidence, and
