Story and Photo by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Air Museum held its 22nd Annual Flower Drop and Air Fair to celebrate Memorial Day and our Fallen Heroes. The flower Drop is always witnessed by thousands of parents and their children.

The event starts early with vendors selling memorial day items. There were exhibition rides on a C-47. Next was the dedication of the Clay Lacy Lear Jet and the artist Stan Stokes Display at 11:00. Food vendors took care of anyone hungry or thirsty.

The weather was the best in years, which was the reason there was a record crowd for this Memorial Day Celebration. One of the highlights was a special presentation to Lt. Col. F. Russ Mulvany. This war hero was a tail gunner on the B-24,

served in both Korea and Vietnam and was awarded numerous medals for bravery. Congressman Raul Ruiz presented him a Certificate of Congressional Recognition. The National Anthem was sung by Loretta Siani as the Colors were presented

by the Palm Springs High School AFJROTC Cadets while everyone held their hands over their hearts. Fred Bell spoke about the war heroes and how this day marks the appreciation

Media Mavens was started nearly 20 years ago by women involved in any form of Media. Founders were Pattie Daly Caruso, Gloria Greer, Janet Newcomb, Judy Vossler, Patti Gribow and Lea Goodsell. Since then, we have lost Pattie and Gloria while others have resigned or left the group. We miss them all. The numbers had dwindled to where the group thought they needed to merge with another group that incorporated the same ideas and goals. As a part of Media Mavens for many years, I am happy

Will Two Tops Make a Bottom?

By Janice Gough According to market history, when we usually have experienced two peaks in the market, soon after, we hit a significant Correction. In technical terms, this is called a “double top” pattern. The first top occurred last September 2018, and the second top was this month May, ’09. Typically, the two “tops” are followed by a decline of anywhere from 10% to 20%. An example of this happening was when the dot-com bubble popped in 2000, and the S&P 500 went on to plunge 49% over the next two years. The S&P 500 also topped out in

2007. It went on to fall 57% over the next two years. The wealthiest 10% of Americas control 75% of our wealth. However, most Americans are practically living hand to mouth, with very little savings. All it takes is one major company that says they cannot pay their Debt any longer to trigger a crash. As more and more investors sell out, the triple down effect occurs, and then, we are amid a major correction. Many of the problems of Wall Street is that it is very overleveraged, just as our country is and we are, personally. High Debt is out of control. Our country has 23 Trillion Dollars of Debt (not encompassing Social Security debt). We have been increasing Debt every year, but it cannot go on forever. The bottom line is that when the market does correct, we will see interest rates skyrocket. The current Treasury Bond market is near 3%. The Fed who has driven interest rates

artificially low will be forced to increase rates, even as high as the mid-’70s when mortgage interest rates were as high as 18.5 percent. Ninety-nine percent of the Public would be affected by a crash. The Fed raising rates will cause Companies with high margin debt to close, and the number of businesses in this category is at an all-time high. Moreover, if interest rates skyrocket, we will see many companies fail. It only takes one large company to start a correction as we saw in the decline of Lehman Bros. Reports show Fifteen percent of U.S. Cos. will not be able to pay their Debt The Fed cannot afford to bail out any companies, as they did in 2007 crash. The Fed printed lots of money (Quantitative easing) and then backed it with US bonds, which increased the Debt substantially. If more and more people have to pay higher interest

rates on loans or credit cards or adjustable rate mortgages, just as we witnessed in 2008, bankruptcies and foreclosures will increase. Now is the time to lock in large loans and mortgages on a Fixed rate. Be careful that you are not overextended as this was a leading cause of foreclosures in 2008. Debt is not only the Fed’s problem; it is an American’s problem and the people’s problem. The US has $1.3 Trillion in college debt. Also, Consumer Debt is $ 1.9 trillion. It should be an essential planning strategy for advisors to help teach clients ways to get out of Debt, as much as selecting suitable investments. Most advisors only consider offering solutions for the Savings portion of a client’s income; however, a good retirement plan will encompass ways to pay down Debt before retirement. Savings in qualified plans may not be what it is cracked up to be, especially if interest rates are double when

we withdraw the savings. Having a good retirement savings plan does not always lead to financial security in retirement, but reducing Debt, does. As an advisor, I talk to many people who’s debt problem should be addressed before establishing savings plans, even 401K, IRAs, etc. By eliminating high-interest paying rates on Debt and by investing in Tax Sheltered accumulation of savings and Tax-Free withdrawals, your retirement days could be great.

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Dear Kelly: Is there any legal requirement for the reserves to be at any levels or is it a recommendation by the state? Can an HOA be taken over by the state if it is underfunded and if so, at what percentage? Thank you. S.P., Newport Beach.

funds is considered borrowing which must be disclosed to the members per Civil 5520. The Davis-Stirling Act does not specify any minimum funding of reserve accounts and does not specify a percentage the fund must be in comparison to the reserve study recommendation. If the reserve study is prepared and annually reviewed and all the disclosures to members and prospective member are made, a reserve fund could be empty and still technically comply with the law. This makes sense, because the percentage of funding depends upon the remaining anticipated life of each component. Associations should follow the funding recommended by their reserve studies. Financially healthy associations adequately fund their reserve accounts, while short-sighted association boards often try to artificially

keep assessments lower by cheating – avoiding the scheduled monthly deposits into the reserve account. Regular reserve deposits are necessary because roofs, asphalt and other common components in the association deteriorate each day. That deterioration can be calculated quickly using the reserve study. For example, if a new roof is expected to last fifteen years, once the anticipated replacement cost is determined one can quickly determine the daily cost of ongoing roof deterioration. If the association does not set aside a corresponding amount of money to offset that deterioration, the association quietly but inexorably falls into insolvency. When a new roof is necessary and the HOA has not accumulated enough funds in its reserve account, it will be forced to ask the members to approve a major new special assessment

or obtain a major loan. The Legislature has done its job, by enacting a group of statutes forcing association boards to think about and disclose the HOA’s reserve status and whether the HOA is prepared to meet its future needs for major refurbishment. Wise homebuyers and their Realtors® should place a higher value upon the wellreserved HOA home and be cautious about poorly funded associations.

Mr. Richardson: Please tell me if there is a Civil Code requiring a certain percentage of funds to be kept in the HOA reserve fund? Also, would you know if there is an average or median level that is known for California HOA’s.? Ours is over 100 percent. J.D., El Cajon Dear S.P. and J.D.: The Davis-Stirling Act contains several requirements regarding reserves. Civil Code Section 5550 requires a full study be performed every three years, with annual reviews in between. Civil 5550(b)(5) requires a long-term funding plan, and Civil 5560 requires that plan include scheduled assessment increases and be adopted in an open board meeting. Civil 5565 requires a detailed written disclosure of the status of each common area component in the reserve study, which disclosure must be in the form prescribed by Civil 5570. This disclosure, per Civil 5300(b)(2) is part of the Annual Budget Report, and so is distributed annually to members and to prospective buyers. Civil 5510(b) requires that reserve funds be spent only on the items reserved for, and per Civil 5515 any other withdrawal of reserve

Rep. Takano releases report on heavy burden of rent in Riverside

More than 30 percent of renters in Riverside County are still severely rent burdened By Desert Star Staff Riverside, CA – Rep. Takano (D-Calif.) released an updated version of his 2014 report examining rent costs, household income trends, and housing availability in Riverside County. The report found that about one in three households in the Inland Empire are severely rent burdened, with 30.2 percent of all Riverside County renters spending more than half of their annual income on rent. Since 2007, Riverside County’s median annual income has decreased by 7.2 percent while rent has gone up by 3.8 percent, bringing severe and far-reaching negative consequences for families and communities. “Homeownership is often seen as a stepping stone into the middle class, an investment for a secure retirement,

and a pathway to upward economic mobility,” said Rep. Mark Takano. “Unfortunately, homeownership is out of reach for families in our community and across the country, and families are renting more. The lack of affordable housing is becoming burdensome for many in Riverside County. We need to support vulnerable renters and assist aspiring homeowners in this current housing market if we want our economy to prosper and our community to thrive.” To help alleviate this crisis, Rep. Takano proposed a series of solutions that can be addressed at the federal level, including: Lowering the cost of rent by increasing the inventory of affordable housing Preventing landlords from using credit scores to deny tenant applications

House Bills Would Give Millions a Path to Citizenship

By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK – The Dream Act and American Promise Act, extending permanent protection to millions of immigrants whose legal status is threatened,

are on their way to the full U.S. House for a vote. The bills, passed by the House Judiciary Committee yesterday, would extend permanent protection for young adults known as

“Dreamers,” who arrived here as children, and to those who were eligible for Temporary Protected Status or Deferred Enforced Departure as of January 2017. And they would create a path to citizenship

for 2.2 million immigrants nationwide, including more than 80,000 in New York. Anu Joshi, senior policy director at the New York Immigration Coalition, says the Trump administration’s efforts to end protections for DACA and TPS recipients have thrown their lives into limbo. “The Dream and Promise Act would be helping to ensure that they could live full, meaningful, healthy lives without living under the threat of deportation,” says Joshi. The Trump administration attempted to rescind Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals and terminate TPS and DED status for most of the people protected, but those efforts have been blocked by the courts. After passing background checks and other requirements, the bills would allow both DACA and TPS recipients to apply for green cards and

Knoxville-based Genera Energy was recognized for its partnerships with regional farmers to grow agricultural crops such as switchgrass and wheat straw, which the company then uses

to make sustainable fiber. Vice President for business development Sam Jackson says natural fiber-based plates, bowls, cups and take-out containers will be ready by early next year. “So, we’re making a usable fiber out of our agricultural materials, but it’s in a much more sustainable, environmentally friendly process,” says Jackson. “And then also onsite, we’ll be manufacturing our own line of compostable food-service products, all of which will be fully compostable and fully

biodegradable, really aiming at replacing polystyrene or Styrofoam products on the market today.” The 54th Annual Conservation Achievement Awards ceremony was held in Nashville and honored 17 individuals and businesses across the state. Another honoree was nine-year-old Cash Daniels of Chattanooga, who organizes monthly river cleanups and is committed to reducing waste. “Why I clean up the river is because 80% of the ocean’s plastic comes

from rivers, and if we don’t clean up the ocean, it will just keep getting worse,” says Daniels. “We pull out, like, close to 3,000 pounds of trash out of the river.” Daniels says he hopes to be a marine biologist when he grows up. Mike Butler, CEO of the Tennessee Wildlife Federation, points out that as more people move into urban areas, they are less likely to experience the state’s wildlife and natural resources. “If you go back 40, 50 years ago, you have a lot

Joshi points out that many TPS recipients already have lived in the U.S. for decades. “There’s about 300,000 current TPS recipients, and they have 275,000 U.S.-citizen children,” says Joshi. “So, we’re not just talking about immigrants. We’re talking about U.S.-citizen kids who stand to benefit from this legislation.” There are more than 30,000 TPS recipients living in New York. Joshi is confident the bills will pass in the House but acknowledges it will be more difficult to get them through the Senate. However, she believes there is hope. “There has been broad, bipartisan support in the past for the Dream Act, and legislation to protect TPS and DED recipients, and we just have to continue applying pressure,” says Joshi.

‘Unlikely Alliance’ of Native, Rural Americans Defends Environment

By Desert Star Staff OLYMPIA, Wash. – Native American and non-Native communities have joined forces across the country to form

what could be the base of a new environmental movement. Zoltán Grossman, a geography and Native studies professor at Evergreen

State College in Olympia, is the author of “Unlikely Alliances: Native Nations and White Communities Join to Defend Rural Lands.”

He says a local example of this was the blocking of a large coal port terminal proposed near Bellingham. Grossman notes the Lummi Nation prevailed because of its treaty-protected fishing rights. “They were joined by some of the same non-Native fishing communities that, back in the ‘60s, ‘70s, even ‘80s, were opposing tribal treaty rights,” he states. “And so, this is a very powerful, really locally based alliance.” Grossman also cites the Quinault Nation’s success opposing a proposed oil terminal near Aberdeen, which he says gained support from the mostly white, working class Washingtonians of former logging towns in the area. There are more examples across the West and Midwest. The Midwest Treaty Network was formed between Native and non-Native communities to defeat plans for a copper mine in Wisconsin. White ranchers and farmers and tribal members have teamed up in the Cowboy Indian Alliance to oppose

By Desert Star Staff MINOT, N.D. – The 2018 Farm Bill laid the soil for growing hemp, giving North Dakota farmers the chance to explore this emerging market. Although hemp has been around for a while, it’s getting new life with the lifting of the federal prohibition against growing the crop commercially. Eric Eriksmoen, a research agronomist with the North Central Research Extension Center in Minot, says hemp has big market potential and many uses, but it’s still not clear

what the market will look like. For North Dakota farmers who have been struggling, especially in the midst of the trade war with China, Eriksmoen says hemp could be used to stem some of their losses. “They’re looking at it as another crop to utilize and to diversify and limit some of their risk,” he explains. “So it has some opportunities.” Eriksmoen says there are regulations on growing hemp, but they aren’t stringent. Growers need to obtain a

license with the North Dakota Department of Agriculture and submit to a background check. Because hemp is related to cannabis, the plants also have to be tested for the psychoactive ingredient THC. Eriksmoen says if the THC content is too high, the plants have to be destroyed. Hemp is a diverse crop with a variety of uses. Its stalk can be used for textiles and the seeds can be extracted for food such as energy bars. Hemp seed oil is used in cosmetics

and other food products. Eriksmoen says a compound in hemp known as CBD, which has potential pharmaceutical uses, will likely be the largest market. It was worth $40 million in 2018, but industry experts expect it to skyrocket, predicting a $22 billion market by 2024. The barrier, Eriksmoen says, is that North Dakota has no processors for extracting CBD – yet. “That’s an issue,” he concedes. “But I think if we can show that the farmers in

Alliances between rural communities and Native tribes have sprung up across the West and Midwest to protect local lands and waters. (Zoltán Grossman)

the Keystone XL pipeline. Grossman says rural community members learn more about Native cultures in these fights and also about the sway Native communities hold to launch large-scale opposition to environmentally destructive projects. “The tribes in particular, because of their treaty rights, possess certain powers, especially to bring in federal agencies, etc. that local governments don’t,” he explains. Grossman says these alliances offer a different way to look at environmentalism and its base, which he adds tends to be urban, white and upper middle class. He says in defending their homes, Native and nonNative community members have created a different form of populism than we’re used to hearing about. “It’s a populism that cuts across cultural and racial lines to take on corporate power and to reinforce power of ordinary people against these big machines,” he points out.

North Dakota can produce a viable hemp industry, that the processors are going to be more than willing to set up shop in this state.” While hemp is showing potential, Eriksmoen says it’s a relatively untested crop in North Dakota and will need pioneering farmers to test it out. “How do you get this started and who’s going to take the risk and once those issues are worked out then it will either become a viable crop – a viable, marketable crop – or not,” he states.

Knowledge is Power Understanding the rights of nursing home residents

If a nursing home participates in Medicare or Medicaid – and most do – it must meet requirements “to promote and protect the rights of each resident.” This means nursing homes are required to care for their residents in a way that enhances the quality of life for residents, respects their dignity and ensures they are able to make choices for themselves. Established by federal law, the “Residents’ Bill of Rights,” states if you live in a nursing home, you are entitled to rights including: • The right to be fully

informed in a language you understand of all aspects of your residency. • The right to participate in all aspects of your care. • The right to make independent choices based on your needs and preferences. • The right to privacy and confidentiality. • The right to safe and appropriate transfer and discharge, including the right to appeal decisions. • The right to visits from friends, family, providers and other people of your choosing. • The right to participate in social, religious and community activities. • The right to organize and participate in resident groups, often called resident councils. • The right to complain

Law Praised for Lifting Ban on SNAP Benefits By Desert Star Staff CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Recovering addicts say a change in West Virginia foodassistance rules will help them stay clean and out of trouble. Last week, a new law went into effect allowing people with drug felony convictions to qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly called food stamps. Nakesha Cabbell said she’s staying sober now after serving a sentence for delivery of a controlled substance. She said the change this is going to make in her life is fairly straight-forward. “Well, I wouldn’t have to break any laws to try to put food in my stomach. It’s pretty transparent,” Cabbell said. “I wouldn’t have to fall back into old addict behaviors, which could cause me to relapse and go back to prison again, to try to put food on the table.” The ban on felons getting

SNAP benefits was the result of a 1990s welfare-reform movement intended to be tough on crime - part of the broader war on drugs. The Legislature passed House Bill 2459 lifting the ban, during the last regular session. West Virginia had been one of only three states that still had the rule in place. Lida Shepherd, program director with the American Friends Service Committee, said the recovering addicts she hears from say much the same thing. She said most of them are poor and have trouble getting work with a felony conviction on their record. Long-Lasting Effects of Family Separation Policy Likely for Children

Separation from a caregiver can lead to such disorders in adulthood as anxiety and depression. (pathdoc/Adobe Stock)

By Desert Star Staff BOISE, Idaho – Separating families at the border likely will have long-term effects on the children involved. That’s according to decades of research, says Taryn Yates – grant manager and planner with the Idaho Children’s Trust Fund. Yates says forced separation from parents creates profound stress for a child, and long-lasting separation also prolongs the body’s stress responses, leaving them feeling unsafe. Yates says separation neurologically looks the same as neglect, which the brain processes like physical abuse. And in some cases, she says neglect can be more damaging than abuse. “You’re getting the lack of the nurturing they need for their brain development, and you’re also getting the stress of not having the caregiver there to help them self-regulate and help them calm down,” says Yates. “So, they’re

just in this sustained stress response, which their brain begins to wire in that way.” The Trump administration implemented a “zero tolerance” policy to deter migrants from coming across the U.S./ Mexico border a year ago this month, but later rescinded it. More than 2,800 kids were separated under this policy and recent court documents have identified another 1,700 possible separation cases. Federal officials say it could take up to two years to reunite families. If these situations aren’t resolved soon, Yates says the stress of separation will most likely follow children into adulthood. Possible results are lower I.Q., underdeveloped social and emotional competence, and disorders such as anxiety and depression. She explains kids need to feel safe in order to explore their world and learn – and

brains that feel threatened have a greater difficulty learning. “So what’s happening is these children are kind of in these holding patterns, where their brains are so stressed out that they’re not able to learn,” says Yates. “They’re not able to have positive experiences, and without parents around, there’s no adult to buffer that stress.” Yates also has young children of her own, which she says gives her practical examples of how important caregivers are in making kids feel safe. “The attachment between a caregiver and a child is really this beautiful thing that should be protected, and that our community should stand firm that it’s something that we always protect,” says Yates. China to dethrone US as world’s largest retail market in 2019 By Desert Star Staff Retail sales in China are poised to surge this year and exceed US retail by more than $100 billion, bringing it the crown as the top global retail market, according to a forecast by research firm eMarketer. The total sales to consumers of world’s most populous country and second-largest economy are expected to hit around $5.64 trillion in 2019, an increase of 7.5 percent since last year, the US-based research company concluded in a report published on Wednesday. Meanwhile, retail sales of its trade-war rival, the US, are projected to surge 3.3 percent to reach nearly $5.53 trillion. “In recent years, consumers in China have experienced rising incomes, catapulting millions into the new middle class,” senior forecasting director at the research firm, Monica Peart, said. “The result has been marked rise in purchasing

power and average spending per person.” The main booster for China’s retail sales growth in e-commerce, according to eMarketer. Online sales in the country account for the highest rate of retail sales in the world, some 35.3 percent, and they are set to expand by 30 percent this year, reaching $1.99 trillion, according to the report. At the same time, the US share of the global e-commerce market is expected to drop to 15 percent by 2022. China will take the lead in global online retail sales, taking more than half of the market this year and more than 63 percent in the next three years. China’s online sales hit one of their peaks during the annual shopping holiday, Singles Day, which takes place on November 11. Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba smashed records last year, making some $30.8 billion

(213.5 billion yuan) during the 24-hour shopping event, beating Amazon’s Prime Day, as well as both US shopping holidays Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined. At the same time, growth rates are slowing for both countries, eMarketer estimates, adding that China’s growth rate will exceed that of the US through 2022. Earlier this week, Beijing May 29, 2019

reported that its economic growth came in at 6.6 percent last year – 0.1 percent higher than the authorities expected, but the slowest pace for the country in almost three decades. The news fueled concerns over a global economic slowdown. However, Beijing insists that it’s on track for more growth in the nearest future. “There are all sorts of

views; some are saying that China is approaching the end of its growth, or we have already reached the end of our growth. If you ask us, we believe that we have not reached the end, we are pursuing more sustainable growth,” Chinese Vice-President Wang Qishan told the audience at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Wednesday. www.desertstarweekly.com

225,000 Flowers Placed at Arlington National Cemetery for Memorial Day Flowers Honor Fallen Troops & Veterans at 155 Cemeteries Nationwide

By Desert Star Staff Arlington, Va. – On Sunday, May 26th, more than 1,400 volunteers from the D.C. area honored fallen troops by placing 225,000 flowers at grave sites at Arlington National Cemetery. This annual event is organized by the Memorial Day Flowers Foundation. “It’s about bringing back the original meaning of Memorial Day, by encouraging people to visit cemeteries and decorate grave sites while recognizing the sacrifices made by our fallen military heroes and veterans,” said Ramiro Penaherrera, who cofounded the project in 2011.

Memorial Day was initially known as Decoration Day, and people would observe the holiday by visiting cemeteries and decorating grave sites to recognize the sacrifices made by our fallen military heroes. This event is part of a national effort by the Foundation involving 600,000 flowers that decorated 400,000 grave sites at more than 100 cemeteries nationwide on Memorial Day. “Thousands of veterans’ grave sites go unvisited and unrecognized on Memorial Day – the national day to honor our fallen troops and decorate their grave sites,” said Penaherrera.

“We want to honor and remember their service and sacrifice for our country.” Flower growers from Colombia, Ecuador, Ethiopia, and California donate flowers for the event. The event is widely supported across the floral industry. In partnership with the Foundation, more than 200 retail florists and main street businesses distribute flowers from their shops to the public for placement in cemeteries across the country to honor fallen service members and late veterans. 155 cemeteries are participating this year with the help of 5,000 volunteers

nationwide. Please see our website for a list of 40 participating cemeteries. Additional graves are receiving flowers as part of special Memorial Day observances organized by community groups working with the Foundation. Learn more on the website at www. memorialdayflowers.org

The Memorial Day Flowers Foundation began in 2011 after U.S. citizens working in the floral industry wanted to express their patriotism and profound appreciation for the sacrifices made by America’s military men and women. They began with placing 10,000 roses at Arlington National Cemetery for Memorial Day in 2011.

E-commerce behemoth Alibaba smashes ‘Singles Day’ records

By Desert Star Staff Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has smashed records for its Singles Day, the world’s biggest 24-hour shopping event, despite an ongoing trade war with the US and waning domestic interest in the event. The 2018 edition of the 11/11 Singles Day brought in a record $30.8 billion (213.5 billion-yuan, renminbi), beating Amazon’s Prime Day, as well as both US shopping holidays Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined. Alibaba boasts a reported 666 million active monthly users, more than twice the population of the US, which may have helped. “That trend [of a rising Chinese middle class] is not going to stop, trade war or no trade war,” Alibaba Executive Vice-Chairman Joe Tsai said in a company blog post on Sunday. Tsai estimates that China’s middle class would

almost triple by 2030, from 300 million to 850 million. In the nine years since Singles Day began, the number of brands that signed up to participate has gone from 27 initially, including Adidas, to 180,000. Alibaba’s main rival, JD.com, with backing from Walmart, Google and Tencent, posted its own Singles Day volume of $23 billion (RMB 160 billion). The record $30.8 billion in sales marks a 27-percent increase on 2017. This does, however, mark a significant drop in overall growth, which is down compared to a rate of 39 percent year-on-year in 2017. At present, only 17.5 percent of Chinese commerce is conducted online and Alibaba is trying to strike a balance between constructing more bricks-and-mortar ‘smart stores’ while maintaining a push towards digitization across the country.

Ron Howard on His Career Transition, Script Selection & Directing WITH LADY BEVERLY COHN

Ron: That was another time, and there were access limitations. There was no cable, there were just three television channels and no independent stations, there was no Sundance or independent film markets, so it was a much more closed industry. Generally, people were pretty patronizing when I would say that I wanted to direct. They’d say how cute and someday I’m sure you will. I was just chafing to do it now. My dream was to direct a movie while I was still a teenager which I didn’t achieve, but my first film rolled the day after my 23rd birthday, so I didn’t miss it by too much.

Ron Howard with Cheryl, his wife for almost 45 years. Courtesy Photo Ron Howard was born into a show biz family making his acting debut at the ripe old age of 18 months. He made his screen debut when he turned four and has spent his entire life in Hollywood with his breakout role as Opie Taylor on the “The Andy Griffith Show” shining a national spotlight on this adorable little kid from Duncan, Oklahoma. As he grew up, he transitioned into playing teenagers on such television series as “Happy Days,” “The Fonz and the Happy Days Gang,” “Laverne & Shirley,” and “Love, American Style.” He had co-starring roles in movies made for television as well as a part in the iconic coming-ofage film “American Graffiti.” Over the course of his amazing career, Ron has won 39 awards which include two Academy Awards, (“A Beautiful Mind,” and “Apollo 13”) four Emmys, a Grammy, two Golden Globes and was nominated for seven BAFTA Awards and was a recipient of the National Medal of Arts in 2001. He was honored twice by receiving two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contributions to the television and motion picture industries. There are too many films to list but some of the most memorable include, “Cocoon,” “Splash,” “Parenthood,” “Cinderella Man,” Rush,” “Backdraft,” “The Da Vinci Code,” “Angels & Demons,” and “Frost/Nixon.” Ron is a national treasure with a reputation of being one of the nicest people in Hollywood which is attested to by the famous actors with whom he has worked including, Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, Mel Gibson, Kurt Russell, Gary Sinise, Daryl Hannah, Robert Duvall, Steve Martin, Michael Keaton, Kevin Bacon, Ed Harris, Ewan McGregor, Henry Winkler, and Bill Paxton. The film is CBS Films Polygram Entertainment Brian Grazer presentation, an Imagine Entertainment and White Horse Pictures production, and is scheduled to open in select cities on June 7. Following is Part 2 of my exclusive interview with Ron Howard, which has been edited for content and continuity for print purposes. There is a thru line to your films, which are character-driven with a deep sensitivity to the human condition. Why is

that your preference? Ron: I always think about character-driven stories. As a fan, those are the stories that reach me the most deeply. I can appreciate a good action movie or a fantasy that isn’t character driven, and some of them are great. But the movies and television shows that resonate with me are the ones where the characters are tested in ways that I find fascinating, or I relate to, or I feel I learned something through observing their journey – whether it’s fiction or based on real events.

What grabs you when you’re reading a script? Ron: Usually, it’s a surprise. There’s something fresh about the setting, and I like the way the characters are behaving within that setting, and I feel like the script is offering the audience something fresh.

How do you set up your scenes with your actors? Ron: Through rehearsals and conversations, I try to understand what makes them tick as artists, and I try to create an environment which will allow them to A lot of young actors don’t excel. When you’re working with a narrative script, do you allow for improvisations or changes to the script as you’re shooting? Ron: If I think the actor or actress has a gift, I’m definitely more inclined to try to open up sometime in the schedule to let them improvise. You wouldn’t think it, but the movie “Cocoon” had a lot of improvisation in it. Other movies like “Parenthood” were very loose and very realistic and had very little improv. It was tightly scripted and worked. Even “Arrested Development” was initially supposed to have a lot of improvisation, but the scripts were so tight that while the actors might riff a little bit here and there, they just stuck with Mitch’s writing (Mitchell Hurwitz). It gets down to how are we using our resources for the best effect. Is it through improv, or is it executing the script as written? In a given week, how many scripts land on your desk? Ron: Well, it depends on whether or not I’m shooting. I’m getting ready to direct a scripted project from Netflix called “Hillbilly Elegy,” which will be starring Glenn Close and Amy Adams. During the nine weeks of shooting in Georgia and Ohio, I doubt that I’ll be reading any scripts. When I’m just co-chairman of Imagine Entertainment, I will read two or three scripts a week. As always, I look forward to seeing your next film. Ron: Thank you so much. This was fun.

‘Isn’t It Romantic’ Is A Fun Rom-Com Romp There is a song lyric that suggests “What the World Needs Now Is Love, Sweet Love.” And that’s not all we need. We could also use some laughs to lighten the effects of all the sad, disturbing news we see every night on TV, from horrible rainstorms and tornadoes to potential world conflict and chaos. Eeek! So if you feel down and want a little pick-me-up, check out the sweet rom-com “Isn’t It Romantic” starring Aussie funny lady Rebel Wilson (the “Pitch Perfect” films), Adam Devine (“The Intern,” “Pitch Perfect”) and handsome Liam Hemsworth (“The Hunger Games” and younger brother of actor Chris Hemsworth). While not as charismatic as classic Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn screwball comedies, this film is pleasant fun with song and dance thrown in for good measure. We first meet Natalie (Rebel) at work in New York. She is a young architect, but the men in the firm don’t listen to her ideas (which are excellent.) Instead, she is the

go-to-girl they send out to get coffee and donuts. The only colleague who always praises her in front of the others is Josh. It’s apparent that he really likes her. The only one without a clue is Natalie. Her other supporter is her assistant Whitney (Betty Gilpin) who loves to watch romantic movies on a small TV and on the job. In one scene, they get into a heated, but friendly, dispute over romantic comedies like “Pretty Woman.” Whitney loves them, but Natalie describes them as “rubbish.” This disdain wasn’t always the case. In a flashback, we see a teenaged Natalie glued to the TV set watching “Pretty Woman.” As she fantasizes, her mother says the only way a guy like “Richard Geer” would propose to her as if he needed a way to immigrate--and when he did he’d leave her. Ouch! Cut to the present-Natalie’s whole life changes after she’s mugged in the subway and lands on her head. When she recovers every man who sees her seems to be infatuated by her,

including a very handsome Aussie client (Hemsley). Even her naughty little dog obeys her. What is happening! And does it make her happy? Not really. In fact, all this attention gets on her nerves, especially when her best pal Josh seems to be smitten with a pretty swimsuit model (Priyanka Chopra). Natalie is now a fashion

plate with the aid of her very gay next door neighbor (Brandon Scott Jones, the bookstore owner in “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”). Unfortunately, his performance is totally over the top--even for a screwball comedy. Less would have been more. Todd Strauss-Schulson directed from a screenplay by Erin Cardillo. Donna Fox

and Katie Silberman. The film is rated PG-13 for language and some sexual material. Running time is 88 minutes. “Isn’t it Romantic” is now available on DVD and Bluray. The blu-ray combo pack contains deleted scenes and a featurette “I Wanna Dance” that details how the musical numbers were created.

“Bite Me,” A Love Song To Weirdos Tours USA

By Desert Star Staff The team behind the award-winning independent feature film, Bite Me – a subversive romantic comedy about a real-life vampire and the IRS agent who audits her – is partnering with the Palm Springs Cultural Center for a special one-night screening, Q+A, and Joyful Vampire Ball as part of the film’s 51-screening, 40-city, 3-month Joyful Vampire Tour of America, bringing with it unforgettable events full of hope, joy, and acceptance for outsiders of all kinds. Bite Me’s writer/producer/ star Naomi McDougall Jones was 14 years old when she went to see The Princess Diaries in her home state of Colorado with her best friend. “It may sound stupid, but watching that movie was a genuinely devastating experience for me,” Naomi recalls. “As you may remember, a very young Anne Hathaway was supposed to be a ‘mega-nerd.’ You knew this because they had frizzed up her hair and given her glasses and braces, which, in Hollywood-speak equals ‘mega-nerd.’ Over the course of the movie, she falls in love with a super-hot, popular guy who doesn’t know that she exists until someone gives her a makeover and he, finally, sees through to her winning personality. Of course, the problem is that, if you put frizz up Anne Hathaway’s hair...she still looks like Anne Hathaway.” Naomi, who, by description, was “a genuinely strange kid; strange in a way that no kind of makeover would change” remembers her skin turning cold watching that movie. “I can remember so clearly thinking, ‘Oh my god. If she’s a weirdo. I’m not even on the charts.’” As a grown filmmaker, Naomi became determined to make a film for the world’s true outsiders -a film where the girl gets to keep her glasses on at the end of the movie. Thus, Bite Me was born, a story that centers on two very different kinds of outsiders – Sarah, with her blue hair, facial tattoo, who identifies as a vampire and James, a seemingly normal IRS agent, who has spent his entire life afraid to make any strong life choice for fear that others would make fun of him – who,

self-expression by the end of the film – the team behind Bite Me follows each screening with A Joyful Vampire Ball, part-party, part-event, part-celebration, but most importantly a space where everyone is welcome, nobody is judged, and every uniqueness, large and small, is given room to be expressed. Audience members are invited to come dressed in whatever makes them feel most joyful, which certainly could be a vampire outfit, but could also be a tiara, wings, a Viking dress, a Christmas sweater they’ve never been brave enough to wear in public – whatever makes them feel fabulous and joyful. The Palm Springs screening on June 14th falls in the middle of the team’s Joyful Vampire Tour of America, which began on May 6th with three sold-out screenings in New York City, and is circumnavigating the US before ending back in NYC

on August 1st. Major cities on the tour include New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Nashville, New Orleans, Austin, Tucson, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Aspen, Chicago, Washington, D.C. and others. A full list of dates/venues can be found at https://www. bitemethefilm.com/screenings The Palm Springs Cultural Center will host on June 14th a 7pm screening and Q&A with the film’s writer/ star Naomi McDougall Jones, followed by a Joyful Vampire Ball. BY ROBERT KINSLER

‘80s Icons Shine Anew

A slew of groundbreaking 1980s hitmakers are back with terrific new albums in 2019, including The Waterboys, Jimmie Vaughan (of The Fabulous Thunderbirds), Alan Parsons, The Stray Cats, and Morrissey. Artist: The Waterboys Title: Where The Action Is (Cooking Vinyl) You might like if you enjoy: The Waterboys, World Party, Psychedelic Furs Tell me more: Singersongwriter Mike Scott and his outstanding group known as the Waterboys have returned with another must-hear album of literate and lusty rock. Since forming the band in Scotland in the early 1980s, Scott has written and recorded heartfelt original material tinged with classic rock, folk, Celtic and alternative styles to give his material a diverse and enchanting sweep. Few songwriters tap into the dayto-day experience of living life itself like Scott, whose lyrics resonate with the power of rock’s all-time greats; listen to the tear-inducing folk rocker “In My Time On Earth” and lyrics-driven “Ladbroke Grove Symphony” to get an instant feel of Scott’s brilliance. Ever the sonic explorer, Scott dips back to the poetry of Robert Burns (1759-1796) for the

Celtic “Then She Made the Lasses O,” and even offers up a full-on rap selection via “Take Me There I Will Follow You” and seemingly proves nothing is out of reach. Information: MikeScottWaterboys.com.

You might like if you enjoy: The Alan Parsons Project, ASIA Tell me more: Alan Parsons has explored a myriad of corners of the music universe over the past 50+ years, scoring success as engineer, Artist: Jimmie Vaughan producer, and recording artist. Secret” is a celebration of the You might like if you enjoy: symphonic and progressive Jimmie Vaughan, Kid Ramos rock elements that are clearly Tell me more: The new a big part of his musical DNA Jimmie Vaughan album “Please — after all, Parsons was an Come Home” is a thrilling and assistant engineer on The joyful celebration of the blues. Artist: Alan Parsons Title: The Secret Artist: The Stray Cats (Frontiers Music Srl) Title: 40 (Surfdog Records)

You might like if you enjoy: The Stray Cats, Lee Rocker, ‘50s rockabilly Tell me more: The Stray Cats have returned with the aptly-titled “40,” a celebratory album that finds the rockabilly heroes rocking with the excitement and firepower that marked their introduction to the world in the early ‘80s. The stripped-down approach displayed across the Peter Collins-produced album shines a welcome light on the talents of singer-guitarist Brian Setzer, bassist-singer Lee Rocker, and drummer-singer Slim Jim Phantom. There is apparent musical chemistry when they perform a dozen cuts on the album, and the New Yorkspawned trio has returned with some great original tracks to show off their musical chops. While the Stray Cats certainly revisit the classic rockabilly sound that put them on the map (just listen to the blistering “Three Time’s A Charm” or playful “That’s Messed Up”), they explore new ground on the moody surf guitar-adorned “Cry Danger,” which features some of Setzer’s most innovative guitar work in memory. Other great cuts on the set include the high-flying “Cat Fight (Over a Dog Like Me),” moody instrumental “Desperado” and edgy closer “Devil Train.” Information: StrayCats.com.

Artist: Morrissey Title: California Son (BMG) You might like if you enjoy: Morrissey, The Smiths Tell me more: When it came time for singer Morrissey to record a full-length album of songs by other artists it should have come as little surprise it would be no average covers project. Indeed, the former Smiths frontman has dipped back to the lesser-known reaches of the 1960s and ‘70s covering mostly under the radar cuts from legends such as Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and Dionne Warwick as well as obscure cult heroes including Jobriath, Tim Hardin and Phil Ochs. Even music aficionados will find themselves discovering new songs courtesy of this dozen-track set. Morrissey’s voice tackles each song with artful candor; the euphoric “Morning Starship,” dreamy “Don’t Interrupt the Sorrow” and politically-charged take on Ochs’ “Days of Decision” are among the seldom heard masterworks reintroduced here. Those looking for a familiar track should immerse themselves in Morrissey’s stellar version of Roy Orbison’s operatic epic “It’s Over,” as well as an inspired run through Gary Puckett and the Union Gap’s “Lady Willpower.” Information: MorrisseyOfficial.com.

emotional – so the Family Law Self-Help Center at the Las Vegas family courthouse has found a way to speed things up. Before, survivors had to apply for a domestic-violence protection order in one office – then go explain the situation again to staff in another office in order to file for divorce, custody or guardianship. Help center Directing Attorney Stephanie McDonald says the center has recently combined those services under one roof – so it’s now a one-stop shop. “Victims of domestic violence, they experience something very personal, very upsetting, very traumatic,” says McDonald. “This helps reduce their confusion and reduces the number of people in the courthouse that they

have to interact with in order to get the kind of assistance that they’re looking for.” The problem of domestic violence persists in Nevada. The Nevada Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence’s 2017 report showed that victims contacted domestic violence programs more than 63,000 times that fiscal year, and those agencies prepared more than 10,000 temporary protection orders. The protection-order program in Las Vegas alone sees 1,300 people a month, and the Family Law Self-Help Center overall sees 4,500 clients a month. McDonald says streamlining the process speeds up the timeline for victims and their children to get stabilized. “So, by having people be

able to talk to us now about the protection-order side of it and the long-term divorce and custody side of it,” says McDonald, “we can give them more information about options they’re going to have to address the custody issues with the children who are being the subjects of abuse, or just merely in the presence of abuse, which can be just as damaging to them.” Victims can find a rundown of the entire process of domestic-violence temporary protection orders online at familylawselfhelpcenter.org. Make Sense of Your Travel Preferences

Photo courtesy of Getty Images By Desert Star Staff Seasoned travelers know that no two trips are exactly the same, even when revisiting the same location. The weather changes, your personal life and perspective evolve and any combination of factors makes each experience unique. However, if you’re like most travelers, your preferences guide your journeys no matter how far you venture from home. According to a survey of American travelers from vacation rental app and website Vrbo, people are

united by a common desire to travel with friends and family. In fact, 52% of respondents said a family vacation is their reason for travel in 2019, and more people said they will travel with a group of four or more this year than last year. That’s where the generational similarities end, however. Determining where to go and what you’ll do depends quite a bit on your age. Your stage of life significantly impacts the places you dream about visiting, the reasons you travel and what you

look for when you get there, according to the survey. What to look for in a destination: Your definition of a dream vacation is likely to shift along with variables like your life stage, income and available free time. Limitations in any of those areas may make a certain destination a far-off dream during one stage of life but an attainable retreat during another. The disparity between dream and reality signals that barriers of time and money are the deciding factors for whether Americans will take that dream

vacation. This holds true for every age group, although millennials (37%) are more likely to go into debt for travel than Generation Xers (27%) and baby boomers (15%). Reasons for traveling: Relaxation is a primary reason for traveling, which can help you disconnect from the stress of daily life and reconnect with family and friends. Whether it’s curiosity or a much-anticipated trip to celebrate a special occasion with a family member, many trips have a specific purpose. Understanding why you want to travel can make it much easier to plan. Although younger travelers are most likely to make exploration a priority on their journeys, the Vrbo survey revealed that travel isn’t always about adventure, as 20% of travelers ages 35-54 are likely to travel for a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary. In addition, only 6% of baby boomers said they would travel for a hobby or activity like skiing, surfing or hiking, compared with 23% of millennial respondents. Amenities that matter: The amenities you can access during your getaway may vary greatly depending on where you go and the type of trip you

plan. From electronics and fully stocked kitchens to swimming pools and pet-friendly features, plenty of options are available to help ensure your perfect vacation lodging includes all the amenities you require. If you’re like most travelers, keeping connected is a major requirement. In fact, 75% of respondents listed access to the internet via WiFi as an important amenity when traveling, outranking traditional must-haves like TV and air-conditioning, according to the survey. Amenities like WiFi aside, accommodation preferences reflect the starkest generational differences among American travelers. Millennials (71%) are most likely to consider unique lodging options such as boats or treehouses. They also represent the age group most likely to take into account design and architecture when choosing a place to stay. Generation Xers voiced the strongest preference for having ample space for everyone in the party. For baby boomers, more than other age groups, noise level is important when selecting lodging. Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Rescuing Nearly 600 Birds and Dogs from Animal Fighting Case

By Desert Star Staff MORGAN COUNTY, Ind., At the request of the Indiana Gaming Commission (IGC), the ASPCA® (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) assisted with the removal of nearly 600 animals – including multiple dogs and more than 550 birds – from two properties in Morgan and Owen counties that are connected to alleged animal fighters. The ASPCA is also assisting local authorities with evidence collection, medical assessments, and veterinary forensic exams. Search warrants were executed yesterday by the Indiana Gaming Commission, and officials discovered the animals living on two properties. The dogs were found tied to heavy chains and housed in a manner consistent with dogfighting, while roosters were found with physical alterations

commonly associated with cockfighting. Animal fighting paraphernalia was also discovered on the properties. “Animal fighting is one of the most heinous forms of animal cruelty, and sadly it is far more common in the United States than many people realize,” said Jessica Rushin, senior manager of Partnerships for ASPCA Field Investigations and Response. “To betray animals by forcing them to fight for their lives for so-called entertainment is despicable. We’re proud to work alongside the Indiana Gaming Commission to remove these dogs and birds from pain and suffering and hold those involved responsible.” “There’s no place in Indiana communities for animal fighting and the illegal gambling that goes with it, and we are very pleased that we were able to shut down this operation,” said Superintendent Rob Townsend

The ASPCA’s Legal Advocacy department will work closely with law enforcement and prosecutors to ensure the best outcome for these animals. The following animal welfare organizations provided ASPCA volunteers to assist with this case: Animal Care Centers of NYC; Animal Care Services City of Indianapolis; Charleston Animal Society; Humane Society of the Pikes Peak of the Indiana Gaming Commission. “This investigation Region; Humane Society of Southwest Missouri; started with a tip from a Oregon Humane Society; concerned citizen to Crime Quincy Humane Society; San Stoppers, and by raising more Diego Humane Society. awareness about this type of The ASPCA has assisted activity we see an increase in the IGC with multiple animal reports from the public that

In Indiana, conducting an animal fight and the possession of animals for fighting are level 6 felonies, each punishable by six months in county jail to 2.5 years in state prison, and a potential maximum fine of $10,000. The ASPCA deploys nationally to assist local authorities in animal cruelty cases, as well as disasters such as hurricanes, wildfires, and tornadoes. It also provides local communities with resources, including grants, training, and expertise to effectively assist animals during cruelty and disaster situations. In 2018, the ASPCA assisted nearly 22,000 animals impacted by cruelty and disaster situations. For more information on the ASPCA’s efforts to end animal fighting, visit aspca.org/fightcruelty. One country that could win big from the US-China trade war By Desert Star Staff If China follows through on its retaliatory threat of raising US liquefied natural gas (LNG) tariffs from 10 to 25 percent, US exports will be walloped — but another country is waiting to gain from it. Australia is poised to fill the gap for China, with its booming LNG sector well positioned. Last year, China imported 23 million tons of LNG from Australia, which made up about 42 percent of Australia’s exports. That figure could be increasing. US LNG exports to China have plunged 80 percent this financial year, compared to the same time last year. President Trump’s threat to add $300 billion in tariffs on China caused China to retaliate previous week with the risk of raising tariffs to 25 percent on these imports starting June 1. LNG producers in the US and other major LNG exporters will be anxiously waiting to see how the tariffs could

impact significant natural gas production plant developments — especially future projects in the works or awaiting approval. China is expected to go from about 53 million tons of LNG imports in 2018 to about 93 million tons in 2025 — as it moves steadily to become the world’s largest gas importer. “Overall, this is a positive for the marketing of Australian LNG,” said Credit Suisse energy analyst Saul Kavonic about China looking to stabilize its supply. “US LNG is a competitor to Australia, so the tariffs work to take Australia’s main competitor out of the market,” Kavonic said Kavonic sees the trade war raising the risk of Chinese buyers looking to sign 20year trade deals on imports. A Wood Mackenzie study forecasts a $200 billion surge in new LNG development projects, with production sites capable of about 90 million tons expected to reach final

investment commitments over the next two years. Much of that new LNG development was slated to take place in the US, according to the study. Trump has hoped to fuel America’s role as a leading global LNG exporter. These construction projects were expected to support the country’s shale gas boom. The US is the fastestgrowing LNG exporter in the world, and analysts predict the country will rank right behind Qatar and Australia by the end of this year. The US had a 53 percent increase in LNG exports in 2018 over the previous year. The US Energy Information Administration projects continued increases in American LNG export capacity will soon make the country the world’s thirdlargest LNG exporter. However, China is a major LNG customer, now the second biggest LNG importer in the world behind Japan. May 29, 2019

While the latest threat in tariff increases is severe, the broader trade war is expected to have a more significant impact — especially on long-term natural gas development projects. Rystad Energy forecasts that US LNG export volumes will nearly quadruple over the next few years, based on currently sanctioned projects. The company expects that some of the more expensive development projects could struggle to offer competitive terms to buyers, and hurt projects aimed at Chinese exports. Rystad Energy gas analyst Sindre Knuttson cited USbased gas group Cheniere Energy as a likely casualty of the trade war. Cheniere had signed a 20-year deal to annually supply 2 million tons of LNG to Chinese stateowned company Sinopec starting in 2023, but finalizing this deal has been delayed. Nikos Tsafos, of the Center

for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC, also sees a long-term impact on LNG exports that can hurt US exporters. For now, though, Tsafos sees pre-tariff conditions moderating the effects. Some US LNG reached Chinese buyers through portfolio companies with multiple supply sources and customers. On the other side of the issue, China’s three large national oil companies spurned long-term contracts with US suppliers because they “simply did not trust the United States,” Tsafos said. However, the next wave of US LNG projects already in the works could be hurt by a global perception of the trade war disrupting LNG, undermining confidence in energy security and an open market for LNG and energy overall. “Those second-order effects are likely to be far more important than whether US LNG can flow to China,” Tsafos said. www.desertstarweekly.com

Veteran Affairs

A

FAMILY FEATURES

fter they leave the military, veterans often look to start a second career. For many, owning a business is an attractive career path because they have honed many of the skills needed to be successful entrepreneurs, such as ambition and a drive to succeed, during their time in the military. “There are many unique qualities veterans possess that simply aren’t found anywhere else and make them a great fit for business ownership,” said Tim Davis, president of The UPS Store, Inc., and former U.S. Marine Corps captain and Gulf War Veteran.

n

Acquiring new skills: Franchisees typically complete a comprehensive training program to develop the knowledge and daytoday operational skills needed to own and operate their own businesses. The training focuses on everything from marketing and operations to human resources and staff management.

n

Thriving under pressure: Veterans know things don’t always go according to plan. The military provides service members the training and discipline needed to remain calm and thrive under the most pressure-filled situations. Particularly when it comes to navigating tricky situations like disgruntled customers or employees, a levelheaded approach can earn more satisfying results.

n

Working hard to accomplish a goal: Business owners typically dream of selfmade lives, but not all have the commitment and work ethic needed to accomplish their goals. Service members are trained to understand the requirements of a mission and work tirelessly until they achieve them.

n

Accepting responsibility: Operating a business is no small job and it requires a strong sense of responsibility akin to the role service members take in their chosen fields. Business owners assume a hefty burden to ensure the business and its employees grow and thrive.

Skills that transfer Veterans are uniquely suited for solving pressing challenges life can present, which is part of the reason they can make successful entrepreneurs and business owners. Fran chising, in particular, can be a building block for veterans’ careers as they transition from military service. “Franchising is an opportunity where veterans can empower and be empowered, adding value to the brands they represent,” Davis said. “I have seen firsthand how the drive and discipline gained in the military can be a great advantage for veterans looking to own their own businesses and open franchises.” Leadership. Work ethic. Discipline. These qualities are exactly what help the more than 200 veteran The UPS Store franchisees succeed. n

n

Working as a team: Veterans often know the success of an organization relies on every member working together to build a team, or a business, that’s greater than the sum of its parts. In the case of a franchise, the franchisee must embrace teamwork at multiple levels, not only among the employees of the local franchise location, but also with the franchise’s leadership team on a national and regional basis. Executing a plan: A franchise business typically provides its owners with a proven business model and ongoing support. However, executing the plan is up to the franchisee. All of the pieces are provided, but putting them together and creating a working business plan requires a degree of entrepreneurship. It’s an approach that is similar to the training veterans experience in the military.

Service members make business ownership a post-military career

Getting started As a participant in the Veterans Transition Franchise Initiative (VetFran), a strategic initiative of the International Franchise Association and the Franchise Education and Research Foundation, The UPS Store, Inc., allows veterans the opportunity to fulfill their desires for second careers. The Mission: Veteran Entrepreneurship program offers significant financial incentives – valued at nearly $300,000 – for a select group of qualified U.S. military veterans to help open their own franchise locations. In addition, the first 10 eligible veterans to submit a complete buyer’s application packet and initial application fee by Nov. 11 will be awarded $29,950 in waived franchise fees. Franchising vs. Starting a Business Solo For entrepreneurs exploring business ownership, there are a multitude of options to consider, but one of the first is to determine whether to invest in a franchise or start their own business. There are pros and cons to each path. One of the biggest differences between investing in a franchise and starting a business from scratch is the initial startup process. When you start your own business, everything is on you. As a new business owner, you have to develop branding elements and positioning, your product and service offerings and logistics, such as a physical store layout. With a franchise, those elements are captured as part of the franchising fee. If you’re attracted

May 29, 2019

to the idea of a proven business model to help get your business positioned to grow quickly, having the support of a franchise brand can be helpful. In the end, your decision depends on what business ownership style best fits your personality. Starting your own business can allow you the freedom to explore any venture you want, but it comes with the risks and responsibility of being completely on your own. Investing in a franchise provides the framework within an existing business model while still enabling you to be your own boss, expressing your creative side within the structure of a proven system.
