At the same time, numerous businesses were closed in the state at the time – a clip that got her slammed by former president Donald Trump and others as a hypocrite. Newsom is also seen in a photo with a group of maskless people during a dinner that mixed households and broke the state’s Covid-19 guidelines. FAMILY FEATURES
laying in or around water is one of the joys of summer, but this treasured seasonal pastime comes with some serious risks. Drowning is the second-leading cause of accidental death for children under the age of 14 in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As COVID-19 restrictions ease, many families will have more informal gatherings and take trips to the beach, increasing the potential for children to have unsupervised access to water sources. Because of this, it’s important for children to take swimming lessons to learn water safety skills and create safer habits in and around water. As swimming lessons begin across the country, many are being conducted safely with COVID-19 precautions in place. Protect your family’s safety around water this summer with these tips from the Make a Splash Tour, presented by Phillips 66 and the USA Swimming Foundation. Designate a Water Watcher and Closely Monitor Children. Designate a water watcher when you are in, on or around water. Watch all children and adolescents swimming or playing in or around water, even if they know how to swim. Keeping young children or inexperienced swimmers within arm’s length at all times can help ensure you’re able to provide assistance if and when it’s needed. Wear a Life Jacket. Anyone participating in any boating, paddling or towed water sports, regardless of swimming ability in pool or open water situations, should wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket. Preschool-aged children (5 years old and younger), who are not protected by touch supervision, in particular, should always wear a life jacket. Swimming aids and water toys – such as water wings, inflatable water wings and rings – are not intended to be lifesaving devices. They may provide some buoyancy in the water but do not prevent drowning. Swim with a Buddy. When possible, choose swimming locations where a trained lifeguard is watching for dangerous conditions and helping keep an eye on swimmers. Also make it a practice to always have at least two people swimming together. That way, if someone has a problem, the other can get help.
Learn to Swim. Research has shown formal swimming lessons reduce the risk of childhood drowning by 88%. Through the annual Make a Splash Tour, the USA Swimming Foundation, with the support of Phillips 66, encourages children’s swim lessons. By equipping your child with the skill of swimming, you’ll open doors to a lifetime of safety, fun, fitness and even employment opportunities. While lessons progressively teach a variety of swimming strokes, some of the most important things swimmers learn – even in beginner classes – are breath control and how to float. These basic skills are essential for staying above water should someone find himself or herself unable to touch or too tired to swim to safety. Children can participate in swimming lessons before they can walk, and parent-child swim lessons provide bonding opportunities along with water safety education. Enter Water Feet First. Diving in a pool that is too shallow or into water where you’re not certain what’s below the surface, like a lake, can have dire consequences. Teach children to dive only in designated diving areas and to always enter water of unknown or non-visible depth feet first. Swim in Designated Areas and Obey Posted Signs and Flags. Ropes, buoys and flags in larger bodies of water like lakes or oceans are commonly used to mark off safe swimming areas and provide visual cues about changes in depth, underwater surfaces and currents. Teach children what these signs and markers mean and that they’re in place as safety tools, not toys to play with or float on. Learn CPR. If the unthinkable does happen, knowing how to perform CPR allows you to take immediate action, which has been shown to significantly better the outcome for children with submersion injuries. In the time it takes for paramedics to arrive, you could save someone’s life. Seconds count; the more quickly lifesaving CPR is started, the better the chances of recovery. There are many places that offer CPR training, including community organizations and nonprofit groups. Remember to keep your certification current once you have completed the initial requirements. Make safety a priority for your summer water fun. Find more information, including swim lesson providers in your area, by visiting usaswimming.org/makeasplash.

Ask other parents in your area where they take their children. You can ask people you know and use social media and neighborhood boards to get tips. went into Showplace Studios in Dover, New Jersey, for the sessions of his 8th album. That’s What I’m Talkin About was engineered and produced by Showplace owner Ben Elliott, who suddenly passed away shortly after the album was recorded. In addition to Sean Chambers (guitar, vocals) and members of his band, That’s What I’m Talkin About also features guest appearances from lauded keyboardists Bruce Katz and John Ginty. The 11 tracks on the new disc include ten songs Sean regularly performed on the road as a member of Hubert Sumlin’s touring band and “Hubert’s Song,” a Chambers original saluting Sumlin. In addition, the music showcases a tour-de-force of Sean’s blazing guitar pyrotechnics. “This album is a tribute to my mentor and friend, the late great Hubert Sumlin,”
Sean Chambers says. “Back in 1998, I got a call asking if my band and I would be interested in backing up Hubert at ‘Blues Stock’ in Memphis. Of course, I was honored and said yes. The band and I woodshedded the songs for a month or so and went to play with Hubert for the first time in October of 1998. It was a magical night for me, and the chemistry between Hubert and us worked well. After that show, Hubert asked if we would become his full-time group. My band and I continued to play and tour with Hubert for over four years. I look back on that time with Hubert as my’ college education in the blues’. ‘That’s What I’m Talkin About’ was a phrase that Hubert used to say a lot, so we thought it would be a fitting name for this album. Ben Elliott, who engineered and produced the album,
sadly passed away suddenly shortly after this session, and it would turn out to be his last project. The picture in the album package of Ben and Me behind the mixing board was the last one of us, as we listened back to the tracks we had just recorded, hoping that Hubert would be proud. My previous two albums, Trouble & Whiskey and Welcome To My Blues, were also recorded with Ben Elliott. He was a great friend and partner in the business and will be sorely missed by everyone that knew and worked with him. I will always be grateful to Hubert Sumlin and Ben Elliott and will never forget all the work we did together and all the lessons I learned from them both. The music will always live on, and I hope that you enjoy this album as much as we enjoyed making it.” Sean Chambers will begin a post-COVID tour supporting
the new CD with his band throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe. He currently resides in Southwest Florida with his wife Karen, who handles his merchandise sales while on tour. “I am bringing back my old bass player, Todd Cook, who played bass on Trouble & Whiskey and Welcome to My Blues. In addition, new touring drummer Andrei Koribanics was the drummer on the new album, That’s What I’m Talkin About, and played percussion on Trouble & Whiskey,” Chambers says about his new touring band. Is The HOA’s Coverage Sufficient?
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Insurance brokers are one of an HOA’s most important vendors, yet they are often ignored until claims arise. This mistake can be costly. Insurance is a contract in which the insurer accepts a fee (“premium”) and in return agrees to pay for certain incidents of damage (property insurance) or claims of liability (casualty insurance). Because insurance is a contract, it is critical to understand the contract’s limitations. Here are six questions to carefully consider. 1. Is there a deductible, and how much is it? The deductible must be paid by the insured HOA before the insurance company pays the first dollar of damage reimbursement. Also, what are the limits of the insurance? Is there enough insurance to cover the amount of the damage?
buildings and improvements? One HOA discovered to its shock during the wildfires two years ago that its asphalt streets, heavily damaged by the conflagration, were not included in the definition of “covered property.” Pay close attention to which elements of the property are covered by the insurance. 4. How much insurance does the HOA have? Particularly with a condominium association, in which the HOA is normally responsible to rebuild the structures, it is important to review the valuation of the property. If the HOA has a stated value of the structures at $5 million but the actual repair cost is $10 million, where will the HOA find the additional millions to restore the property? Talk to your insurance broker annually to review the valuation of the insured elements of the HOA complex, and make sure there is enough insurance to cover a catastrophic loss.
“covered property.” The insurer responsibility to pay a property damage claim has nothing to do with the CC&Rs but everything to do with what the insurance policy covers. In condominium, stock cooperative, or attached planned development properties, the CC&Rs do not always match the insurance regarding what is covered within residences. Some HOAs have CC&Rs requiring the HOA only to restore walls, floors, and ceilings to a condition ready for finishes and fixtures (a “bare walls” approach) but its insurance covers all the common area and the units (“walls-in”). Conversely, if due to insurance costs the HOA prefers a “bare
walls” insurance approach, make sure the CC&Rs do not require a “walls-in” responsibility for the HOA. Talk to the HOA insurance broker annually to keep on top of the property insurance coverage. Bill Introduced to Protect More Than 1 Million Acres of CA Public Land

Katie Hawkins, California program manager for the nonprofit Outdoor Alliance, said the plan is great news for people who like to relax in the great outdoors. “Protecting California’s lands and waters will improve recreation access to these incredible landscapes, support local economies and will advance the state’s goals in conserving 30% of the lands and waters by 2030,” Hawkins outlined. The U.S. House passed its version of this bill in February. Opponents claimed current protections are sufficient and complained the bill would limit logging, mining and fossil-fuel extraction. Belén Bernal, executive director of Nature for All in San Gabriel, which supports the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, said the bill will improve trails and make the area much more accessible to low-income families from the San Fernando Valley.
She noted it moved the ball forward on multiple fronts. “It’s going to be part of a climate solution by protecting public lands from oil drilling, improving carbon sequestration, preserving wildlife corridors, watershed, you name it,” Bernal explained. Among many other things, the bill would give official designation to 400 miles of the Condor National Scenic Trail in the Los Padres National Forest, and would add protections to the South Fork Trinity River. The PUBLIC Lands Act is a package containing previously introduced bills, including the San Gabriel Mountains Foothills and Rivers Protection Act, the Central Coast Heritage Protection Act, and the Northwest California Wilderness, Recreation, and Working Forests Act. Israeli Wonder Pizzas From Domino’s
By Anthony Grant Chances are pretty good that when you think of Israel, pizza is not the first word that comes to mind. But this pioneering nation is at the crossroads of the Middle East, and that means the culinary intersections are numerous and surprising, such as the creative collaboration between Domino’s Pizza in Israel and the renowned Israeli chef Assaf Granit. It’s a marriage made in pizza heaven! Granit is the co-owner of the restaurant Machneyuda in Jerusalem, and his restaurant Shabour in Paris received a Michelin star earlier this year. But for some people, myself included, there is with few exceptions no mightier meal on earth than a great pizza, and the trio of baked wonders cosigned by Granit and Domino’s Israel get five stars in my own Book of Pizza. And although I have just discovered these creations, the collaboration is actually not brand new. “We approached Assaf five years ago to create this joint
venture after we conducted extensive research, and we were and still are very happy with and proud of the results,” says Arie Elbaz, Chief Customer Officer at Domino’s Pizza Israel. There are three signature varieties: a holy pizza trinity if you will. The Bacarne pizza features thin slices of brisket, baby mozzarella balls, toasted Grana Padano parmesan and fine tomato sauce on a thin crust dough. The 4 Skillets variety features four toppings, confit artichoke, confit garlic, confit cherry tomatoes and confit onion, baby mozzarella balls, mozzarella cheese and delicate tomato sauce on the thin-crust dough, with minced chili and pine nuts on the side. And then there’s my favorite, the whimsically named Ya’Salami, starring thinly sliced gourmet pepperoni, delicately poached broccoli florets, garlic confit, Grana Padano parmesan, mozzarella cheese and chipotle sauce, made on the thin-crust dough and with pine nuts on the side. Now,
I’m not a huge fan of either broccoli or chipotle but the way Granit combines these ingredients and pulls it all together, seemingly effortlessly but to truly delicious effect, is nothing less than a revelation. The broccoli is just the right consistency, and the chipotle element is executed with a rare finesse; neither is the garlic
overpowering. Visually stunning too, these special thin-crust pizzas are rectangular in shape with rounded edges and served in cool artisanal pizza cartons with a computerized image of Granit on the front. Assaf Granit by Domino’s pizzas are available exclusively in Israel. If you plan to visit Israeli this summer, remember
you can easily have the pizzas delivered right to your hotel room. Remember this website: https://www.dominos.co.il. Note to readers: Israel is not open to most tourists yet, but when it comes to hotels, our favorite is still the David InterContinental. Visit telaviv.intercontinental.com.

Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse – An Exercise in Cinematic Futility
Michael B. Jordan as Navy SEAL John Kelly with Lauren London as his wife Pam played by Lauren London in TOM CLANCY’S WITHOUT REMORSE. Photo Courtesy of Amazon Studios Some of Tom Clancy’s novels that have been turned into commercially successful, exciting military thrillers include: “The Hunt for Red October,” “Patriot Games,” and “Clear and Present Danger.” Sadly, the film version of “Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse” doesn’t come close to the caliber of those seminal films for the late prolific writer. The disaster begins with the script, written by Taylor Sheridan and Will Staples. They, for some ego-driven reason, dared to think they could improve on the original storyline. They did succeed in creating a confusing story that even a seasoned critic like myself had trouble following. Adding to this travesty is director Stefano Sollima, who took a flawed script and tried to cover its confusion with lots of firefights and other diversionary tactics. He should have paid attention to character development if that was even possible with this script. Adding to this disaster is Philippe Rousselot’s cinematography and lighting, which, in some of the scenes, was so low that I literally could not see the onscreen action and had to rely on the dialogue to surmise what was happening. Even a wonderful actor like Michael B. Jordan, playing Navy SEAL John Kelly, couldn’t save the day as far as
the acting. He was as lost as the rest of the actors, especially true of Jodie Turner-Smith, who played Lt. Karen Greer. She stood around a lot and didn’t seem to know what to do next. In case you’re wondering, here’s the storyline. The film begins with a team of Navy SEALS emerging from the water in Aleppo, Syria. Their mission was to rescue an American operative who was being held in what they were told was a “safe house” but, in fact, was a Russian Military site. This highlytrained team of SEALS consisted of Hatchet (Jacob Scipio), Dallas (Todd Lasance,) Thunder (Jack Kesy,) Rowdy King (Luke Mitchell,) and, of course, the protagonist John Kelly. Soon they are engaged in a firefight, rescue the American, and are picked up by a helicopter. The film then segues into a loving family scene where Kelly is at home with his pregnant wife Pam (Lauren London.) He talks to his unborn baby girl and mentions he’s been offered a job which means leaving the SEALS. All is just as sweet as sweet can be and a setup for what follows. With sex not on the agenda, Kelly goes downstairs to listen to music on his headset as assassins stealthily invade his home. He senses something is wrong and
is shot. Crawling upstairs, he finds his wife and unborn baby killed as well. Her character is designed as a lynchpin for the ensuing convoluted tale of revenge. Soon you need a scorecard to keep track of the good guys, and the bad guys and are the good guys really the bad guys and are the bad guys really the good guys? The assassinations continue with two more members of the Aleppo extraction team offed. Adding to the overall confusion are two more undeveloped characters by really fine actors: Jamie Bell as government operative Robert Ritter who always seems to turn up at the end of firefights. Secretary Clay, played by the usually excellent Guy Pearce. However, in this case, he could not create what was not on the page. Another un-fleshedout character is that of the CIA Director Dillard, played by Lucy Russell, who generally looked confused as they just stared straight ahead. Anyway, Kelly goes through rehab and is called in for a meeting to discuss the Aleppo mission during which two Russian agents were killed, but one escaped, who seems to be behind the assassinations and his wife’s murder. At the end of the meeting, slimy Ritter announces the case is closed, and there will be no
Photo Courtesy of Amazon Studios further investigations into the assassinations of his team and the murder of Kelly’s wife. If you think that Kelly will take no for an answer for one minute, you’re right and what ensues are a series of revenge killings that put our hero into the dungeon filled with Russian prisoners and in short order, he fends off an attack by the prison guards. Do you think maybe the “powers” that want Kelly dead? He is rescued from prison by orders from the excellent lieutenant, and one of his first acts is to head over to the Russian Embassy, douse himself in alcohol to appear drunk, pours an accelerant over the limousine Russian Federal Security Service Andre Vaseliev (Merab Ninidze) just entered, and sets the car on fire. With the car ablaze, Kelly gets into the car, holds a gun to the Russian’s head, demanding to know the name of his wife’s killer. Just before Kelly puts a bullet in his head, Vaseliev reveals the name of Victor Rykov, played by Brett Gelman, as the killer. But wait! Is he a bad guy, or is he a counterspy? So, it’s back on a plane to capture
the Russian killer. The aircraft is attacked with a missile; Kelly survives being underwater for way too long, finds his target, which for some inexplicable reason, is wearing a bomb vest with his finger on the trigger but before pulling the trigger, announces he is a CIA operative. Another firefight ensues, which, trust me, you cannot really see because of the almost black screen. Team member Dallas is shot and dying, and Russians surround the SEALS with lots of guns. It falls to Kelly to figure out how he can get the team to the awaiting rescue boat, which of course, he does. I suppose the most significant cut of all is after the credits roll; another short scene sets us up for the next installment. As for Jordan, it would be advisable for him to pass on the next one. Continued from Page 1
Republican, Democrat, I’m running to be governor for all Californians. To reclaim our true identity, to bring back the gold to the Golden State,” Jenner later says after promising to “reopen” schools and businesses facing hurdles due to pandemic restrictions. Jenner has already set off

controversy due to her more conservative beliefs, supporting Trump in the past and being a lifelong Republican. The 71-year-old former athlete’s latest ad predictably received more pushback, with many pointing to her connection to former Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale as a problem. Parscale has reportedly been
advising Jenner and posted the ad to his Twitter account on Tuesday, seemingly confirming those reports. Others praised Jenner’s ad as a solid introduction to the race, with some even commending her for avoiding leaning on references to her gender – Jenner revealed herself to be transgender in 2015, beginning a ‘transition’ May 5, 2021
from Bruce to Caitlyn Jenner. Jenner’s video comes a week after the California secretary of state’s office announced that a recall petition effort in California against Newsom had gotten enough signatures to qualify as a ballot measure. Republican San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and former representative
Doug Ose (R-California) are among the others who have thrown their hats into the ring. In addition, Trumpsupporting actor Randy Quaid has also mentioned an interest in running for governor of the state.

“The Red Shoes” TCM TV Annual Program Series By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theater Critics Association (ATCA) Member Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (ATAS) TCM is the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to movie fan loyalty and their classic favorites; especially when TCM’s “31 days of Oscars” program is screened nightly, one month ahead, to prepare the viewers for Hollywood’s annual Oscar bash, and the awarding of the best in filmmaking during the previous year. English live theatre productions of Shakespeare’s plays for the stage have been nonpareil over the last 75 years. It’s been baked into the British DNA for centuries. Very few performers could match the skill and talent of the man who made the English classics come alive for American audiences. The brilliant British stage and film actor Laurence Olivier turned Shakespeare’s iambic pentameter speech and dialogue into scenes that both English and American
audiences have come to embrace with increased clarity and understanding. American movie studios and stories of the 1930’s and 40’s generally wrote scripts and stories targeting American audiences. The British cinema rarely produced films for American audiences. They believed English comedies and dramas wouldn’t find their intended audience because of the differences in our language and culture. Their shortsightedness allowed the wits and wags of the day to agree and credit George Bernard Shaw with the apocryphal biting quip; “Britain and America are two nations and people separated by a common language.” Even English Prime Minister Winston Churchill, a pretty fair writer himself, got to weigh-in concerning the English vs. the Americans quips. After all, his mother Jennie Jerome was American-born in Brooklyn New York, making Churchill an Anglo-American. He was awarded honorary American citizenship in 1963 by the Congress; the only such honor ever awarded to a foreigner.
All those cultural differences, however, came to a screeching halt, at least for me, when the formidable English writing, producing, and directing team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger; a duo of gifted moviemakers debuted their flawless 1948 movie gem “The Red Shoes” in London. Set amid the world of modern ballet, the
psychological romantic film wonderfully explores the beauty and discipline of the ballet world, one of the oldest of the art forms which they imbued with technical aspects that only the movie camera provides and captures: Sweeping vistas, huge casts, unique camera angles, powerful close ups, interior dialogue, flash forward sequences,
along with the magic that the editing process delivers in keeping film stories moving forward, was a game-changing bonus for world cinema. I would even venture further saying that the success of the “The Red Shoes” helped pave the way, two years later, for the 1950 dramatic nonmusical Oscar winning film Continues on Page 11
‘Senior Moment’
Story and Photos by Pat Krause The movie is playing at the Palm Springs Cultural Center Community Theatre. Formerly the Camelot Theatre. SENIOR MOMENT stars William Shatner and Christopher Lloyd. This is a comedy love story about an ace NASA pilot who does a drag race with a young man that runs into trouble with the local police who has taken away his driver’s license. However, he is obsessed with his car, a vintage convertible, which he calls ‘baby.’ The movie is about his struggles to get back his license, the car, and the people he meets and makes friends with along the way. This movie is shot locally and shows a lot of Palm Springs, the Desert Area and businesses. After the film’s screening, Gina Goff and Christopher Lloyd held a Q&A on Sat. May 1st. Fans of the movie had a lot of questions about the film. Locals were hired to play parts in this movie, so you may see a friend or business you know. Shatner plays an older man who thinks of himself as still young and beliefs he can still find love with a woman played by Jean Smart. Smart owns a restaurant that has a broken Cuckoo Clock with a story as a premise for the love story. Her love for the Desert Tortoise also plays a big part in this movie. Shatner enlists local senior citizens www.desertstarweekly.com
to make a paper mache tortoise. This is the part of the movie I am in, for a couple of seconds, shredding paper. Senior Moment is a fun movie to watch as young in mind seniors are seen as people who can still fall in love, change their ways and make new friends. Mr. Shatner changes his way of life and his thinking as he grows as a person. The way the movie shows seniors is eye-opening to them. The way Shatner has to change to find his way back to his old life is told in both a fun and also traditional way. It shows senior citizens and people full of life, love and dreams. Life has struggles, but people can change and make a better life than the old. This is an upbeat movie for people of all ages. William Shatner was 87 when this movie was made in 2017. At 90 today, he is full of life and still working. He is an actor, author, Producer, director and even a singer. He will always be known best as Captain Kirk in Star Trek. Christopher Lloyd, an Emmy Winner, is best known for his role in, Back to the Future but is also very busy acting at 72. The desert’s favorite actresses Ruta Lee and the late Kaye Ballard, also appear in the film. The Producer of this film is Gina Goff, and the Director was Georgio Serafini. Robert Miranda and Esai Morales play significant parts in the story.

MUSIC
BY ROBERT KINSLER
Must-hear releases for music aficionados
The first half of 2021 continues to reveal a myriad of must-hear releases for music aficionados. Artist: Alex Chilton and Hi Rhythm Section Title: Boogie Shoes: Live on Beale Street (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: The Box Tops, Big Star, Alex Chilton Tell me more: As Alex Chilton’s well-deserved legacy continues to grow, the incessant hunger for “lost” and previously-unreleased music featuring the late Box Tops and Big Star frontman appears to be relentless. The latest audio treasure for fans of Chilton — the singer-guitarist died in March 2010 at the age of 59 — is Omnivore Recordings’ “Boogie Shoes: Live on Beale Street” featuring the artist backed by Hi Rhythm Section (the house band behind a slew of soul classics from Al Green, Ann Peebles, Ike & Tina Turner, Otis Clay and others). Recorded Oct. 7, 1999, at the New Daisy Theatre in Memphis, Tennessee, the performance was part of “FredStock,” a tribute and benefit honoring Fred Ford (co-founder of the Beale Street Music Festival). As a result, there is a loose and rousing feel to the live set. The audio quality on the recording is excellent; Chilton and company’s delivery on the parade of bona fide soul, blues and early rock favorites is more than up to the task. The 10-track performance includes the collective’s playful reading of “Boogie Shoes” (Chilton first covered the song on the 1979 studio album “Like Flies on Sherbert”), the red-hot “Lucille,” spirited, bluesy nugget “Big Boss Man,” reggae-flavored remake of the Supremes’ “Where Did Our Love Go,” and lively tear through the Fats Domino classic “Hello Josephine.” The audio CD version reviewed here has a street date of May 7, 2021. It includes revealing liner notes from producer David Less (a friend of Chilton and author of Memphis Mayhem: A Story of the Music That Shook Up the World); additionally, the package also features a colorful

blend tuneful pop, artful rock and prog rock flourish where it counts. This is also an album that demands to be listened to as a start-to-finish experience, with the astute mix of songs, Artist: James Holvay instrumental interludes and Title: Sweet Soul Song emotional moodscapes (Mob Town Records) effectively taking the listener You might like if you on a journey into Lathrop’s enjoy: The Buckinghams, immersive world. That’s not to Paul Stanley’s Soul say specific tracks don’t work Station, James Hunter alone; just listen to the tuneful Six, Tower of Power “Florida Man,” awe-inspiring Tell me more: Singer“Of Love, Wine and Song,” songwriter-guitarist James absolutely gorgeous “Mateo’s Holvay’s rousing return “Sweet Song,” blissful “On Paper” Soul Song” revisits the classic and the bewitching rocker sounds of Chicago soul with “This Is Your Life.” Available warmth and energetic spirit now via audio CD and digital, across its five enthralling don’t let “There Is No Light tracks. The uptempo “Working Without The Dark” escape On It,” the magical title track, your notice. Information: beautiful “Still The Fool,” funk- bigstirrecords.com. tinged “Love Has Found A Way,” and infectious “Talking Artist: Ted Russell Kamp About” are all bolstered by Title: Solitaire Holvay’s distinctive vocals, guitar work and nuanced approach of the musicianship. Holvay was a noted musician and songwriter in Chicago leading the MOB from the mid1960s until the early 1980s (he penned the Buckinghams’ big 1966 hit “Kind of a Drag”) and then went into a career in sales. With the widespread renewed interest in the ‘60s and ‘70s soul music, “Sweet Soul Song” certifies that Holvay’s exceptional talents as singer, songwriter and guitarist deserve to put him back in the spotlight. (PoMo Records) You might like if you enjoy: Gram Parsons, Merle Haggard, John Mellencamp Tell me more: The continuing COVID-19 pandemic has impacted professional musicians in particularly dire ways, separating them not only from live audiences but from their fellow players. The latter is so essential in the creation of magic on stage and in the studio. Acclaimed Los Angelesbased Americana singersongwriter Ted Russell Kamp has turned inward on the aptly titled “Solitaire,” an expansive collection filled with 14 songs recorded mostly alone at home over the past nine months. Set for release on May 7, “Solitaire” captures the feel of a time that is equal parts uncertainty and loneliness. The quiet and reflective “Birds That Sing At
Dawn” is among the gems on the winning disc, quiet and lovely; Kamp explores similar emotional terrain on the hopeful Springsteenesque “As Far As The Eye Can See” and alluring “Exception To The Rule.” Kamp is also able to offer up an uplifting individualist spirit on the “The Hardest Road To Find,” tender “Western Wind,” and countrified “The Spark.” Other highlights on the album include the country blues original “Be Your Man,” timely “Be Your Man,” and high-flying bonus track “Lightning Strikes Twice.” While Kamp does most of the heavy lifting on the album, he collaborated with several artists and friends remotely to embellish the songs with nice touches adding backing vocals, drums, slide and electric guitar. Information: TedRussellKamp.com.
Artist: The Stan Laurels Title: There Is No Light Without The Dark (Big Stir Records) You might like if you enjoy: Badfinger, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Tears for Fears Tell me more: There is a decidedly ambitious feel to the Stan Laurels’ “There Is No Light Without The Dark.” The good news for discerning listeners everywhere is that Austin, Texas-based John Lathrop — the singersongwriter/multi-instrumentalist behind the Stan Laurels’ super cool moniker — has written and crafted an outstanding disc filled with songs that May 5, 2021

That act is an unforgivable betrayal in the eyes of Lermontov and results in Vicky being fired from the company as punishment. The film story owes its origins to Hans Christian Andersen’s somewhat dark fairy-tale of a young girl who sees and buys a pair of red ballet shoes from a sly shoemaker who knows the deadly secret that whomever wears the ballet shoes will die from continuous dancing and exhaustion because the shoes once slipped on cannot be removed. Only upon the death of the wearer can the spell of the red shoes be broken. Just as in real life, celluloid choices also have life altering consequences to consider as well. The supporting cast is filled with terrific character actors who know their way around a movie set as well as a ballet stage. Australian actor/choreographer Robert Helpmann, as Ivan Bolesla, created the 17 minute astonishing ballet sequences
danced by Shearer and himself, and at times, with the full company. The dance of the red shoes sequences are stunningly choreographed by Leonide Massine as Ballet Master Gricha Ljubov, who also portrays the shoemaker in the ballet scenes. Beloved character actor Albert Bassermann, as Costume and Set designer Sergei, and Esmond Knight as Livy, the Music Director and Orchestra Conductor bring authenticity and experience to their performances. The vivid lush technicolor-filmed photography is lovingly created by award winning master cinematographer Jack Cardiff. American film director Richard Fleischer who directed Kirk Douglas in the “Vikings” said “Jack is not only creative, he’s very fast and very good – two qualities that are absolutely necessary for a cameraman to possess.” As a side bar, it is interesting to note the similarities in the character portrayal of Lermontov as directed by real life director Powell. Both are strong and opinionated men who are used to having their own way. During the filming and editing process, co-director Emeric Pressburger questioned
Powell on the efficacy of using the footage as shot in the film sequence where Vicky is seen running down the back-stage steps area just prior to making her initial stage entrance where we see she is already wearing her red ballet shoes as posed by Pressburger to Powell in their debate issue was shrugged off by Powell, who later wrote in his diary, that in the Coda section of the script. “I am a director, and a storyteller, and I knew she must (wear the shoes despite the anachronism) I didn’t try to explain it. I just did it.” Which to me underscores the mind-set of Powell, and by extension, the mind-set of Lermontov. There was a lot of Lermontov in Michael Powell’s DNA. Tyrants come in different forms and the real problem in dealing with them is, they also make such wonderful and fabulous motion pictures.
