Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 6th annual Brew at the Zoo was another huge success for the Living Desert Zoo/Gardens as over 2,000 people attended this event on May 2nd. Over 50 beer, wine and food venders graced the grounds of the Living Desert. I was amazed at the new and wonderful work that has been

done at the zoo since my last visit. Guests flocked the 4 areas that held various booths and different bands to entertain the guests. Tables were set up all around the area and animals were shown by staff like, snakes, vultures, smaller creatures. People were seen touching the snake to allay their

fears of what they think are wet and slimy creatures. The staff told about each animal and its habitat and life. Guests got to walk the grounds to see the unusual animals the zoo has to offer, which is amazing in the amount and distinctive types of animals and birds. That alone was worth the price of admission to the event.

By Desert Star Staff RANCHO MIRAGE, CA (May 2, 2015) - In April of each year, the new Mayor of Rancho Mirage is appointed based on the longest term of consecutive service on the city council without having served as mayor. This policy, initiated and drafted by Mr. Hobart, was presented to the city’s electorate in 2004. Voters overwhelmingly approved the measure, thus assuring that all council members

have an equal opportunity to serve as mayor. On April 16, 2015, Mr. Hobart became Mayor for the fourth time. He previously served as Mayor in 2003, 2007 and 2011. Mr. Hobart was first elected to City Council in 2002 and was reelected by substantial margins in 2006, 2010, and 2014. Dana Hobart has initiated a number of meaningful projects during his tenure on the council, including:

Initiating the elimination of overhead electric lines throughout the Tamarisk, Magnesia Falls and the other communities living with dangerous lines over their property. Using Redevelopment funds, the City bore the entire expense. Initiating the effort to defeat the County’s plan to eventually extend the City’s borders by 4,000 acres north of I-10,

The other perk for the event was to be able to try the many types and flavors of beer and wines. The delicious foods being served by a variety of vendors at each area. The Bands differed in the type of music being played. The most visual group to see was Zulluu that was clothed in leopard outfits with blow-up animals

at each side. Foods that were served went from mashed potatoes, BBQ sandwiches, Brandini malts and popcorn, salads, desserts and more from local businesses. The Shadow Mountain Band, 212 Band, provided entertainment. Bleeding Harp Continues on Page 9

Hal Linden at the Annenberg Center

Story and Photos by Pat Krause Tony Awards winning actor Hal Linden was the special Luminary Guest at the CVRep luncheon held on April 29th. The Luminary Luncheon had grown so big that it had to be held at the Annenberg Center for Health Sciences at Eisenhower Medical Center. This was the last luminary luncheon of the season and having Hal Linden was a great way to end the series. Several hundred people came to hear Hal Linden and moderator Don Martin in a Q&A format. Hal Lindon is a classical trained musician, singer, awardwinning actor and so much more. Hal spoke about how his life has transcended from his music career to his acting career and back again to music. He spoke about how a friend asked him to be a bit a part actor during a break as a musician who led to an acting career. He had a girl friend who was also instrumental in getting him a huge acting role. It seems like this guy from the Bronx has had so many lucky breaks in his varied life. He said he often pondered on what his life would have been like if these people had not been there to

help create his career as we know it today. Hal is best known for his roll as Barney Miller on TV. He said there were many hardship times before all these lucky breaks of being in the right place at the right time. He has been in so many Off-Broadway and Broadway shows that had led to big and small parts in movies and TV. He has gone back to his musical roots in later years and put out a CD titled, Its Never Too Late, in 2011. He tours with his show, Hal Linden in Concert, that has been called First-Rate. Guests kept wanting to know more about this man’s amazing life. CVRep is an educational and dramatic theatre organization that presents shows and children’s programs that introduce so much of the art for the Coachella Valley. They produce a lot of programs that deal with issues that you don’t see in other plays. One play dealt with Bullying for the children, and one chose to show the life of an Asian during World Ward II. The actors are sometimes local or even known actors from around the U.S.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause Lindi and Gino Biggi held a Parrot Heads Paradise Party at their home in Palm Desert on Saturday, May 2nd to benefit Loving All Animals Charity. The event was held in the Exotic BG Bird Garden where guests can see the variety of Birds in the garden and see the huge colorful fish in the ponds. Hostess Lindi Biggi greeted guests with a couple of cute birds on her head. When I asked for a photo, she went and got this beautifully colored bird and then showed the bird to her guests. The event was produced by Lindi Biggi’s daughter, Lorie Loftis. Entertainment was provided by the Gary Seiler and the Coast Riders with a tribute to Jimmy Buffett’s music. The band has performed as an opening act for such big names in music as Willie Nelson, Jan and Dean and many others. The term Parrot Head was

coined by Jimmy Buffett in 1985 after seeing his fans in Hawaiian shirts and Parrot hats at so many of his concerts. There are even Parrot Head clubs in cities like Phoenix, LA and San Diego. The event was open for the public for a small fee, and many guests were Parrot Head Club members. The mission of Loving All Animals is to bring together local and national animal welfare organizations to work with each other for the benefit of all animals. Their slogan is a home from a shelter to a loving adopted home. Chas Kidder is a foster mother to dogs, and she brought her little three-year-old small mix dog for adoption. The dog’s name was Amelia Earhart. It was a hot afternoon, and guests sat in shaded areas with misters from above busy to keep guests cool. Refreshments were served with cocktails and beer at a no-host bar.

ETFs and how they differ from Mutual Funds

market. The growth in the ETF sector has been virtually unbroken since the first such product was rolled out in 1993. Lower fees (usually calculated in single digit basis points) charged for ETFs have attracted investors to use them as part of their portfolios. Most people don’t know what an ETF is. An exchangetraded fund (ETF) is an investment fund traded on stock exchanges, much like stocks. An ETF holds assets such as stocks, commodities, or bonds, and trades close to its net asset value over the course of the trading day. Most ETFs track an index, such as a stock index or bond index. ETFs may be attractive as investments because of their low costs, tax efficiency, and stocklike features and can be bought or sold at the end of each trading day for its net asset value Important things to consider when using ETFs as investment vehicles, besides those cheaper

fees, is that they include different asset classes and cross international boundaries. The majority of ETFs, are passively managed in comparison to mutual funds. This accounts for the lower fees. Because they track indices, it’s important to ask your advisor to rebalance them every three to six months. It is not possible to buy partial shares in an ETF as one can in a mutual fund. Excess income, of course, can be invested in mutual funds or held in reserve until enough accrues to purchase a full share. Some ETFs are married specifically to one platform, making them unavailable on others. The trend is for more ETFs to be available across more platforms. This will allow growth in the sector to continue and even accelerate. As exchange-traded products grow in popularity, some believe they will one day

dominate mutual funds, as the market share of open-end mutual funds continues to fall. In fact, mutual funds have lost market share in every year since 1996. Will ETFs overtake mutual funds within 10 years? Based on the current trend, it doesn’t appear likely. Defined contribution plans (401K etc.) rarely offer ETFs to plan participants. If these plans continue to favor mutual funds, ETFs will have a more difficult time achieving asset dominance. However, some market gurus are recommending investment in indices for retirement money, as they tend to be a safer investment for the long term. So changes could take place in the offerings of qualified retirement plans, especially if plan participants desire these offerings.. Also, Advisors are transitioning away from mutual funds toward ETFs. The number of ETFs has been rising since their inception. Today, there are a little over 1,660

ETFs, according to ETF.com. According to the Investment Company Institute, mutual funds have almost $16 trillion in assets, which represents a market share of 88.8 per cent. Despite the significant gap, some believe ETPs will dominate mutual funds in the not-too-distant future. If public demand for EFTs options in retirement plans increase substantially, the 10year prediction may materialize. In any event, I believe the ultimate question is not whether ETFs will overtake mutual funds, but rather when?

The statute, enacted in 1994 as Civil Code 1365.9, was intended to make sure associations had significant liability insurance, and responded to the case of Martha Ruoff, who in 1988 suffered a serious injury and sued the Harbor Creek Community Association. The association only had $1,000,000 in insurance, and her lawyers successfully convinced the appellate court in 1992 that Ms. Ruoff should also be able to pursue each of the 152 association members. Stock Market Performance Flat By Kevin Powell Last week, the stock market was trading at the same level it was Thanksgiving week last year. That equates to a near zero return over the past five months. At the start of April, the Dow Jones was actually down for the year. So what does all this mean for the balance of 2015 . . . possibly a lot more of the same? Many economists are saying that the first quarter was similar to last year when bad

weather accounted for slow sales. However, that’s a tough argument to win this time around. 2015 is a year of uncertainty and that’s the one thing the market hates more than bad news. It’s uncertain when the Fed is going to raise interest rates. It’s uncertain how big an impact the strong US dollar is going to have on US corporate profits. When the Fed finally does raise rates, it will only make the dollar stronger putting more pressure on earnings. Earnings so far this quarter have been mixed. Many companies are hitting their profit estimates but missing on revenues or gross sales. That’s very understandable. Even with all the financial engineering (stock buybacks and debt refinancing at record low interest rates) that’s gone on over the past few years, many corporations are struggling to boost sales figures. Housing still hasn’t fully recovered and the turnaround we

saw seems to be running out of steam. Rental units are outpacing residential construction at a time when mortgage rates have never been lower. Before the 2008 collapse, housing used to account for nearly 21% of our Gross Domestic Product (GDP). More recently it’s been averaging 16% or so and in the last quarter of 2014 it was 15.2%. I don’t think there is a huge correction lurking (at least not just yet) because there is a lot of artificial support for the US economy. Zero interest rates and plunging energy prices are a big boost. Foreign investment in the US is surging as many countries now have zero or negative interest rates. So instead of earning nothing or worse on their own country’s bonds, foreign money has been gobbling up US bonds for the meager 2% return they are getting here. For the first time in decades, Japan just surpassed China as the largest holder of US debt

instruments for this very reason. Europe and the Pacific Rim indexes have grown by double digits so far in 2015. Mid cap stocks are outperforming many large cap names by three to four times. Midstream energy names look especially appealing. Healthcare remains strong. Apple

This 300-hour program is offered in partnership with MK Education and meets training requirements in California for a certified pharmacy technician. Students must be at least 18 years of age or older, have a high school

diploma or GED, proficient in English and ninth grade algebra and arithmetic. Sessions are scheduled beginning June 5, 2015 on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cost, including books and materials, is $2,995. Payment plans are available. Animal Samaritans puts Rescue Van to Good Use

Thousand Palms, CA â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Donors do make a difference. In March Animal Samaritansâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; raised money for a new animal rescue transport van at their Men of the Desert charity Fashion Show. Event guests pledged more than 18,000 dollars earmarked for the vehicle; with additional contributions coming from Riverside County Animal Services and AnSamsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; volunteers, Animal Samaritans raised more than 27,000 dollars for the vehicle. On Friday, April 17, Animal Samaritansâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; rescuers

utilized their new rescue van to transport 18 adoptable, at-risk dogs from the Riverside County Animal Shelter to AnSamsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; rescue partners in San Diego. This marked the largest of three rescue missions Animal Samaritans has performed in their new rescue van since purchasing it. The 18 rescue dogs were an assortment of terriers, hound mixes, Chihuahuas, a shepherd mix, a Labrador retriever, a pit bull, a Chinese sharpei mix, a poodle mix, and a shih-tzu.

Desert Regional & Eisenhower Receive “A” Grade

By KMIR News Staff RIVERSIDE COUNTY - Half the hospitals in Riverside County were rated above average for patient safety, while the other half were rated as average or below average in a survey published today by a nonprofit healthcare watchdog. The Washington, D.C.based Leapfrog Group’s annual Hospital Safety Score analyzed medical facilities throughout the nation to ascertain which ones ranked best and least in procedures intended to ensure that patients’ well-being is not compromised while under the care of healthcare professionals. According to the survey, seven of Riverside County’s 14 hospitals scored a B or higher, while the balance earned a grade of C or D. None were marked with an F.

Hospitals earning an A grade were Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, Kaiser Permanente Community Hospital in Moreno Valley, Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Riverside and Riverside Community Hospital. Two hospitals received a B -- JFK Memorial Hospital in Indio and San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital in Banning. Five facilities fell into the C category -- Hemet Valley Medical Center, Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar, Parkview Community Hospital in Riverside, Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta and Riverside County Regional Medical Center in Moreno Valley. Two hospitals received a D grade -- Loma Linda University

Medical Center of Murrieta and Menifee Valley Medical Center. The Leapfrog Group, an employer-backed organization focused on healthcare quality, used various criteria to calculate hospitals’ grades, examining whether physicians and nurses took steps to optimize safety during surgeries, whether patients received adequate post-op care, whether staffing levels were appropriate to prevent threats to patients’ health and whether facilities had clearly defined protocols to protect patients. Some of the sub-categories rated hospitals on the use of antibiotics to prevent infections and steps to prevent blood clots, as well as the maintenance of surgical wounds, prevention of bed sores and medical staff teamwork to minimize errors. New Water Restrictions Begin June 1st By Desert Star Staff DESERT HOT SPRINGS Ca– At a special meeting and public hearing held Monday, the Mission Springs Water District (MSWD) Board of Directors voted unanimously to restrict water usage for irrigation of turf and ornamental landscaping in response to the State Water Board Resolution 2015-0013. The State Resolution requires urban water suppliers to implement or amend the stage of its water shortage contingency plan that includes mandatory restrictions upon the number of days that outdoor irrigation ornamental landscapes or turf with drinkable water is allowed. Customers in Mission

Springs Water District are required to immediately restrict outdoor irrigation with drinkable water to three days per week— Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. Beginning the June 1 through September 30, 2015, customers are required to restrict watering to Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The additional day for irrigating is intended to address demand during extreme summer weather. A d d i t i o n a l l y, MSWD Resolution 2015-06 restricts watering times to between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., the resolution implements civil penalties of $100, $200 and possible discontinuance of service for non-compliance.

The action taken by the MSWD Board is not to be confused with the Governor’s most-recent Executive order, B-29-15, which will require urban water providers to reduce overall water use within their respective jurisdictional boundaries by varying percentages. MSWD is listed in the State Water Board Draft Regulatory Framework to reduce per-capita water usage by 32%. The final rules for the most-recent order will be decided at the State Water Board meeting in early May 2015. Dust Devil Caught on Video in Palm Springs

By Angela Monroe PALM SPRINGS --We’ve been seeing some dramatic weather for the beginning of may, and Sunday a dust devil ripped though Palm Springs. It was caught on video. The dust devil formed at an open-air market in downtown Palm Springs at 2pm Sunday. It wreaked havoc on the Palm Springs Vintage Market, tearing through vendor’s booths. “I really didn’t expect it to tear up the way it did, but it just kept picking up and I was like wow, you know, this is serious,” said Palm Springs resident, Greg Prather. Prather and Mark Biggs had just arrived at the Vintage Market when they captured on camera the “dust-nado” sending metal canopies and glass flying through the air. “There was a little hint of panic you know and when people started hearing glass, you can see people in the background where my camera didn’t get, see them running around trying to scramble to make sure they weren’t going to get hit with anything,” said Prather.

Luckily, the fire department tells us they’re not aware of anybody being hurt, but debris was flying high into the air. “Merchandise was all over the parking area here in the market, and we were helping to secure the tents that had not blown away, so there were a few moments where it was pretty crazy around here,” said Biggs. Evidence of the dust devil still remains the next day, there are still panes of glass that are broken here at the Vintage Market most likely from framed artwork. “You know I feel bad for them because they lost a lot of stuff, and some people had damage to their cars, so it’s tough.” This was actually the last Vintage Market of the season; it won’t reopen until October. George, who lives in Oklahoma part of the year, knows the destruction of tornados, but says this dust devil was still quite a force of nature. “Tornado on a sunny day it’s a little different, but they’re not usually as powerful as tornados but this one packed a good punch,” said Prather. They say if your trees are infested with the pest you should treat them immediately but if you suspect the disease you should call 1 (800) 491-1899 or your local agricultural commission Experts say Florida uses their oranges for juice so they are able to mix the sour fruit with the sweet but because California sells oranges as fruit ready to eat, if the crop gets infected there is no saving the little produced before the trees die. The bacteria is not harmful to people just trees. The more than $2 billion dollar industry could go south quickly if the disease takes hold. Farmers say their only hope is for a tree to be produced that would be resistant to the invasive bug. By Pam Price The Second Annual Digital Art Technology Academy (D.A.T.A.) headquartered Cathedral City High School teamed up with the Cathedral City Public Arts Commission for the second year, with students competing for awards in photography and filmmaking. It rated as one of the top five D.A.T.A. programs in California, this year’s event held on May 2nd at the Mary Pickford Theatre in Cathedral held fast to the theme of Portraits, and in

doing so presented awards to students with a flair for digital creativity. In its second year, the competition continues to reinforce the D.A.T.A. goal, “to engage students in digital arts as a way to encourage them to graduate and to prepare them for post-secondary education and the work world.” At the awards event, Jim Cox, Chairman of the Cathedral City Public Arts Commission welcomed guests and passed the microphone to Commissioner Brian Vatcher, who introduced

It was during this time she discovered a treasure trove of musical memories, including a master tape of her only album, stored in her garage. This was released recently, which was a proud moment for Georgia Holt’s family. The producers of the documentary followed up with a short question and answer session. Jim Cox followed by their screening afterwards announced seven film finalists. Marilyn Cooper who served six years on the Cathedral City Public Arts Commission, first as the Chairman and later as a Commissioner was next presented with the Legacy in the Arts Award. A reception honoring the award-winning students and Mrs. Cooper followed catered by Cello’s Pantry at the Theatre’s mezzanine. Displayed were the ten winning student photographs. The Cathedral City Public Arts Commission will produce the 3rd Annual D.A.T.A event in 2016. T R AV E L Switzerland – A Country of Unsurpassed Beauty and Refinement BY BEVERLY COHN

PART ONE:

Once in a while a trip comes along that is the quintessential luxurious experience and for me the tour of Swiss Deluxe Hotels gets the prize. Combining the ultimate in luxury, with the kindness of strangers, would best describe my most unforgettable adventure. DAY 1: The kindness portion began at the Zurich airport where the signage for baggage suddenly disappeared. A lovely lady guided me to the steps leading downstairs and were it not for her, I would have been aimlessly wandering in search of my luggage. I was helped onto the train leaving for Lausanne where I had only six minutes to make the connecting train to Montreux. Arriving at the Lausanne train station, I struggled a bit with my luggage and before I knew it, a lovely Swiss gentleman picked it up, took it down a flight of stairs and up another flight to the connecting platform. I asked if he was going to Montreux and he answered that he was not, but just wanted to help me. I wasn’t positive if the train was the correct one and I must have looked a bit confused, as a young woman actually got off the train, reassured me that it was going to Montreux, and picked up my luggage, placing it on the train. I arrived safely at the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace, the first of the family of Swiss Deluxe Hotels, where I met the rest of my group. A sumptuous welcoming dinner awaited us at the Le Petit Palais, directly across

the street from the hotel, which was most appreciated after the almost thirteen hours of traveling. DAY 2: With a menu of activities from which to choose, I opted for a boat cruise. With spectacular Alpine peaks serving as a backdrop, the boat quietly glided through the pristine waters of Lake Geneva, passing charming homes and historic landmarks, which dotted the shores. One very famous landmark is the Chateau de Chillon Castle made famous in Lord Byron’s poem “The Prisoner of Chillon.” After a brief break, we headed for a fascinating tour of the Lavaux Vineyard Terraces of the Swiss Riviera wine country on the slopes of Lake Geneva, which earned a coveted UNESCO World Heritage Award. The Lavaux is a region in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland and is known for its awardwinning wines. Swiss wineries produce a limited amount of wine and because of that only one percent of their production is exported – the rest is for domestic consumption. We were hosted by Blaise Duboux, an extremely knowledgeable vintner whose family have been Lavaux winemakers for 500 years, with Mr. Duboux being the 17th generation to carry on the tradition. He explained that the root system currently being used is American and about one-half of the wineries around the world also use this root system. Being organically minded, he does not use herbicides as, “They kill the soul of the grape and have a negative impact on the water supply.” Mr. Duboux is trying to get the other wine growers to not use herbicides as well. During his informative talk, a tempting array of snacks were laid out on the table, including a delicious savory treat called “Surprise Bread.” As far as the next generation, this vintner registered some concern as he has three daughters, none of whom has expressed interest in joining the family business. He

Some of us tried our hand at playing which is not a simple as it may look, as you need good breath control and strong lungs. As you would expect in wine country, the tour culminated with a delicious wine and cheese tasting. DAY 3: The next day, after our tummies were satisfied with a typical Swiss breakfast consisting of assorted cold meats, hot and cold cereals, and a delicious array of tasty breads, jams and fruits, our next adventure was a scenic train ride from Montreux to Lucerne aboard the Goldenpass Panorama coach, which took us from Lake Geneva towards the Alpine summit and then on down to Lake Lucerne, the birthplace of Switzerland. Here’s a tip: Stay alert as you enjoy the bucolic vistas unfolding, as you might spot a whole range of “animals” on the hillsides. We had a contest to see who spotted the most. Speaking of boats, our next mode of transportation was a boat to Weggis, a charming little town located on the shores of Lake Lucerne in the Canton of Lucerne, lying at the foot of the famous Mount Rigi, a massif in Central Switzerland. (Massif: A large mountain mass or compact group of connected mountains forming an independent portion of a range.) Often described as the Riviera of Central Switzerland, it is the home of the beautiful Park Hotel Weggis, another of the 38 independent Swiss Deluxe Hotels located throughout the country, which has earned the five-star quality endorsement. Framed by the beautiful lake and mountains, the hotel sits squarely in this picturesque region. As with the other hotels, the accommodations were extraordinary, featuring a sunken living room and a splendid, sprawling bathroom fit for a king or queen, as well as a full spa and beauty care services. Perhaps the one and only challenge was to figure out the rather complicated lighting system, which took all of us quite a bit of time to figure out. Press one button and one light went out, press another button and that light came back on, and another one would go out, and at one point all the lights went dark. I had to open the door to let some light in so I could figure out what button to press next. I continued this exercise of pressing different buttons until, at last, I stumbled upon the correct pattern and this delightful room was ready for sleeping. A little advance guidance or diagram would help in sorting out this complex, but wonderful lighting system. The Park Hotel Weggis is home to Sparks, a French cuisine restaurant which has earned 15 Gault Millau points, a rating system which scores from 1– 20 and is similar to our

Michelin star rating system. In addition, the hotel has the largest wine selection in Switzerland. Hosted by General Manager Peter Kämpfer, who manages two hotels, our perfect, mouthwatering dinner began with a Sommerly salad of raw vegetables with cresson and croutons, followed by pikeperch with braised fennel and barley, and topped off with an unbelievably delicious cheese cake in a glass with apricot. Road Rage Ax Attack in Palm Desert By KMIR News Staff PALM DESERT, Ca. - A San Diego-area man has been arrested in an alleged road rage ax attack in Palm Desert. Riveride County Sheriff’s Department says at 9:00am Monday, deputies responded to the area of Highway 111 and El Paseo about a road rage incident. The victim called 911 to report someone was hitting his vehicle with an ax. After the attack, the suspect took off in a car, with the victim following behind. Deputies caught up with both parties in the parking lot

of the WalMart Neighborhood Market near Highway 111 and Fred Waring. Deputies arrested 51-year-old James Scott of Santee for the ax attack. They also took a passenger in Scott’s car into custody. 23-year-old Marcelino Castro of Rancho Cucamonga was arrested on a parole violation. Both of them were booked into the Riverside County Jail in Indio. Neither the victim, or his 17-year-old daughter in the car were injured in the attack. Source KMIR

Teens Hold Distracted Driving Summit in Thermal By Angela Monroe THERMAL -- Two local high school students are helping carry the message about the dangers of distracted driving. The students themselves held the summit. Friday they held a Teen Distracted Driving Prevention Summit at Desert Mirage High School in Thermal. These high school students are learning about the dangers of distracted driving. “My father would still be here today.” Seven years ago, Agustin Arreola’s father was killed in a crash that involved a a distracted driver. When Agustin began high school, he got involved in SADD, Students Against Destructive Decisions. “It’s something that I really take to heart, something that I can work with and it’s something that’s going to help other people, it’s going to save lives, and that’s why I got involved, it’s something

I look forward to, and I don’t want to see anyone else lose a loved one because of distracted driving,” said Arreola. The keynote speaker, Jennifer Zamora-Jamison also lost a loved one in 2007. “My husband, an Iraq war veteran came home from war, and then was killed by a distracted driver on a US highway. I got involved and have been an advocate and lobbying for legislation across the nation ever since, telling my story ever since, trying to save lives and change minds,” said Zamora-Jamison, the founder of Decide2Drive.org. The summit was interactive from a seatbelt challenge, to a driving simulation and drunk goggles. “Traffic collisions is the number one killer of teens in America and a lot of people don’t really understand that, so I brought some interactive tools to talk to the kids about the problems of distracted driving,” said Officer Mike Radford with

California Highway Patrol. We first met these two seniors last year as they attended a national driving seminar in Washington, D.C. After they returned, they organized their own summit

on distracted driving. “Most of us think that oh this is never going to happen to me, I’m just going to look down really quick and send that text, or just update this status really fast while driving, and we all think oh this is

Three People Injured after Shootings By Angela Monroe COACHELLA VALLEY -Three people were shot and injured in two separate shootings in the valley on Sunday, one in Desert Hot Springs, the other in Coachella. Officers found a 19-yearold man with multiple gunshot wounds just after midnight Sunday at Palm Drive and Ironwood in Desert Hot Springs. He was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center where

he is in stable condition. Desert Hot Springs Police haven’t announced any arrests in the shooting. Two people were shot about 15 minutes later in Coachella on Sunday. The shooting happened on Grapefruit Boulevard. Before police arrived, the two victims were taken to a local hospital. Both of them were treated for gunshot wounds are

expected to survive. Police haven’t released their age or gender. The sheriff’s department says the suspect in this shooting is a 25 to 30 year old man, about 5’6” a medium build and short black hair. Health care providers gave free dental, vision and blood pressure screenings. Health clubs, martial arts studios and healthy food demonstrations all were on hand Saturday. Then at night the one mile and five-k Health Glo run/walk kicked off at Cathedral City Hall. KMIR is a sponsor of the

PALM DESERT – Death, taxes and Palm Desert High School’s baseball team dominating the Desert Valley League are some of the few certainties in life. For the last six-plus years, the Aztecs longtime head coach, Darol Salazar, has led the boys in red to multiple league titles and section championships – not to mention, produce some very solid baseball players out of the desert. Starting off the season,

the boys from Cook Street had some difficulty with their nonconference schedule. That was to be expected, though. M o s t o f p re s e a s o n opponents Coach Salazar scheduled are among the best baseball programs in California and even the entire U.S.A. Despite beating some solid schools as well, the Aztecs fell to 2004 national champions Chatsworth Charter, Alemany, Gahr and Corona – all teams ranked in the California top 100.

Even with the slow start, 2015 has been no different for a Palm Desert program that manages to field the DVL’s best team, year in and year out. Captained by some of the best youth baseball players the Desert Sands School District has to offer, Palm Desert is in the driver’s seat to win league for seventh straight time and make a deep playoff run, yet again. The Aztecs play was not so convincing to start the season. They struggled a bit to find their way through the first month, but since their last loss to Chatsworth, the class of the DVL has won eight straight league games. Players improve, get more comfortable and relaxed as the season progresses, which, along with a roster full of gifted athletes, and preparation from the difficult

preseason schedule is to blame for the Aztecs current string of wins. A huge part of Palm Desert’s success last year was due to Andrew Bash’s clutch hitting, finishing the year as the DVL leader with 34 RBIs. Through the first six games of 2015, Bash was hitting near the Mendoza Line at .222 with only three RBIs. Bash – who is already committed to Cal Baptist University next year – has got his batting average up to .313 and leads the team in RBIs with 22. Now, with one series against the second-place La Quinta Blackhawks standing in their way of a seventh-straight league title, Palm Desert only needs to take one from their league-rival. It will take a great pitching performance from either Jeremiah Estrada (UCLA) or

Bash, and another clutch hitting performance from the Bash to seal up the 2015 league championship. With no Kyle Kabeary or Brody Kato, it will be tough for Coach Salazar to reach Dodger Stadium for a second straight year – but it can happen. Bash just needs to continue to hit and pitch the way we did in 2015. Three games remain for the Aztecs this season, none more important than the next two against the Blackhawks. Next Tuesday, La Quinta travels to Palm Desert High School for a night game starting at 6:30 pm. Italian Astronaut Brews, Sips First Espresso in Space

Over the weekend, astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti fired up the first espresso machine in space. She posted a photo of herself on Twitter from the International Space Station on Sunday, sipping from a cup designed for use in zero-gravity. For the special occasion, she put on her “Star Trek” uniform top. “Coffee: the finest organic suspension ever devised,” Cristoforetti said via Twitter, quoting from the old TV series, “Star Trek: Voyager. “ “Fresh espresso in the new Zero-G cup! To boldly brew...,” she added. Cristoforetti, who returns to Earth next week following a half-year mission, almost didn’t get any space espresso. The experimental, Italian-made espresso maker, dubbed ISSpresso using the International Space Station initials, was

supposed to arrive in January, but didn’t get to orbit until April because of a shipment backlog. How did she like the space brew? She didn’t say on Twitter, but she was all smiles for the cameras and gave a thumbsup. It had to beat NASA’s instant coffee, drunk by straw from a pouch. The espresso actually is brewed in a clear pouch, behind the closed door of the boxy coffee maker, and that’s how Cristoforetti and NASA crewmate Scott Kelly first sampled it. Cristoforetti later switched to the small, pitcherlike zero-g cup, a new Americanmade item. Italy’s 120-year-old coffee maestro Lavazza and the Turinbased engineering firm Argotec, which teamed up on the space espresso project with the Italian Space Agency, were thrilled to see their 260-mile-high results. “Today the International Space Station feels a little more like home,” Lavazza said via Twitter.
