By KMIR News Staff SAN DIEGO, Ca. -From the San Diego Zoo: A nine-week-old greater one-horned rhino calf and his mother charged into the Asian Plains exhibit Thursday at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. The male calf, named Parvesh, seemed eager to explore his new habitat for the first time and could be seen running - and stumbling - to keep up with his mother. Parvesh, which means “lord of celebration” in Hindi, was born on Feb. 25 to mother Alta and father Bophu. Alta gave birth to the calf in

a protected area, called a boma, not accessible to other animals. The pair has been in the boma since the calf’s birth to properly bond before being let into the 40-acre exhibit to meet other members of the rhino family. Alta, the dominant female in the rhino herd, introduced her baby boy to the landscape and then to the other greater onehorned rhinos, including her firstborn calf and Parvesh’s sister, 2½-year-old Charlees. Once widespread in Southeast Asia, the greater onehorned rhinoceros is now found

only in India and Nepal. This species is listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. There are an estimated 3,250 greater one-horned rhinos remaining in the wild. Parvesh is the 66th greater one-horned rhino born at the Safari Park since 1975, making the Safari Park the foremost breeding facility in the world for this species. Bringing species back from the brink of extinction is the goal of San Diego Zoo Global.

so the energy has been really good here,” said job applicant, Cip Jasso. Many applicants are applying to specific positions. For others, who aren’t quite sure, the sheriff’s department will point them in the right direction based on interests and previous qualifications. “We do that a lot with people because sometimes their background, say it’s in accounting yet they’re applying to be an office assistant, we might, after getting their

application and look at, after we sit and meet with them we will see if they’re interested in an accounting position. So, we also help guide people to a job that fits their resume and background,” said Captain Evans. The sheriff’s department will have more job fairs in the coming months. ‘Her’—A Look At Love In The Future By Theda Kleinhans Reichman

Writer/director Spike Jonze’s “Her,“ set in the not too distant future, is a very unusual love story. In fact, the concept for this film was so unique it earned Jonze an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay which was quite an honor since “Her” was in competition with “American Hustle” (Warren Singer and David O. Russell), “Blue Jasmine” (Woody Allen),Dallas Buyers Club” (Craig Borten and Melisa Wallack) and “Nebraska” (Bob Nelson). “Her” was also nominated

for Best Picture, Music (Original Score and Original Song) and Production Design. Set in Los Angeles, has a sleek, vivid, fresh look created by fusing contemporary Los Angeles architecture and landscapes with buildings and skylines from Shanghai. Stylish malls, open work spaces with shiny wooden floors and kaleidoscopic wall panels and apartments with panoramic views of Los Angeles as seen from balconies or large glass windows that surround each unit, create a feeling of serene space as well as a sense of personal loneliness and isolation. Joaquin Phoenix (“The Master,“ “Walk the Line” and “Gladiator”) plays Theodore, a sensitive, soulful man who writes personal, heartfelt letters for others. He is outstanding at what he does for a living, but his relationship with his wife (Rooney Mara, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” ) has come to an end. He knows it’s over, but he isn’t ready to sign their divorce papers just yet. It is too painful for him to say good-bye. However, when Theodore becomes intrigued by an advanced operating system that promises to be an intuitive and unique entity in its owner’s life, things change. Once he initiates the system, he is delighted to meet “Samantha” (Scarlet Johansson), a bright female voice that is sensitive, insightful and funny. She is a voice without a body, but soon their evolving friendship develops into a deep love for one another. At this point, I began to feel a little crept out since I have a love-hate affair with my personal computer. While this love relationship seems more sci-fi than sensual, this unusual device opens up our minds as we, and Theodore, start to think deeply about what makes any relationship work—or not. Eventually, all relationships change, evolve or dissolve. Even true love ends when a beloved partner dies. Amy Adams, who seems to be everywhere (“Best Actress nominee in ‘American Hustle’), is also an important part of this futuristic tale about love and loss. The Blu-ray Combo Pack contains the following special features: “The Untitled Rick Howard Project,” “How Do You Share Your Life with Somebody” and “Her: Love in the Modern Age.” The latter featurette is also on the DVD. “Her” arrives on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and Digital HD on May 13 from Warner Bros. Home Entertainments and is rated R for language, sexual content and brief graphic nudity.

Finally, he has overcome his paralyzing stage fright and is about to perform for an eager audience in a packed Chicago concert hall. As he sits down at the keyboard, Selznick finds a horrifying message written on the score: “Play one wrong note and you die.” In the sights of an anonymous sniper (John Cusack) he must give the most difficult performance of life, while looking for help without being detected. Bonus features include: The Making of “Grand Piano,” Soundtrack, Coaches, Stunts and Visual Effects and much more. The film, from Magnolia Home Entertainment, is rated R.

Family Wants Answers After Teenage Son Killed

By Angela Monroe SALTON CITY -- A local family wants answers after their son was shot and killed by sheriff’s deputies near Salton City. 19-year-old Adrian Parra from Mecca died April 18th after being pulled over by police. The family emailed us asking us to investigate. The Imperial County Sheriff’s Department is releasing very little information on this officer involved shooting. It happened just before 6pm on Friday, April 18th. We spoke with Adrian’s mother and the sheriff’s department, trying to uncover what led to the shooting. “Are you the parent of Adrian Parra, and I said yes, I’m the mother,” Maria Duenas told officers the night of April 18th. Maria Duenas buried her 19-year-old son, Adrian Parra, on April 25th. She says Adrian was an honor roll student and graduated from Coachella Valley High last year.

“He had a dream to go to college and be someone, and that day he was going to see a girl on a date to the movies,” said Maria. Adrian was pulled over by deputies on Highway 86 near Salton City In the course of that traffic stop, Adrian was shot and killed by deputies. Since then, Maria has been trying to find out why. “And I asked to see what happened to my son and they’re like we can’t give you information because it’s an ongoing investigation.” Adrian’s mother says he was shot at least three or four times. “What happened, what went where they shot him so many times... why can’t they answer the question if there was a camera,” asked Maria. The Imperial County Sheriff’s Department won’t reveal if the shooting was captured on a camera in the officer’s vehicle. They did tell us two officers were put on administrative leave,

but have since returned to work. We asked why Adrian was pulled over, they would only tell us that it was for vehicle code violations. Officers also refuse to tell us what led to the shooting, but said the investigation should be finished in about two weeks. “They were asking me a lot of questions, more about him, his background about questioning about him, and I’m like that’s irrelevant, I want to know what happened that day,” said Maria. So clearly more questions than answers in this investigation. The Imperial County Sheriff’s Department says once their investigation is complete it will be forwarded to the district attorney’s office. Meanwhile, Maria Duenas is asking anyone who witnessed the shooting to call her with information at 760-396-2114. Courtesy of KMIR www.kmir.com

What’s next for Donald Sterling?

By Kevin Powell Op/Ed A week after the firestorm hit, there is just as much uncertainty about what the future holds as there is regarding how this mess all came to light. The NBA has ruled that they will force Donald Sterling to sell the Clippers, per their bylaws. But this likely won’t be as easy as it might sound at first glance. Even though the bylaws do allow the NBA to force the sale of a franchise for various reasons, it doesn’t appear that Sterling

www.desertstarweekly.com

directly violated any of these rules. Then there is also the issue of forcing a private citizen to sell his private assets. Think about this. You own a local store and one of your employees is accused of discriminating against a particular group. Even though it’s a he said/ she said case, you lose the court battle. Could you ever imagine that a judge could order you to sell your private property for the actions of someone else? This could be a very slippery slope and a very dangerous precedent to set

for all of us. Who sets the sales price? Would-be buyers would know of the forced sale and would likely underbid the true value of the business. Next, there are the tax consequences of these types of actions. The Clippers were purchased decades ago for a mere $10-$15 million dollars. Estimates put their value today in the $600 million neighborhood. The Milwaukee Bucks recently sold for $550 million. That’s a market just a fraction the size of Los Angeles and they don’t have the franchise players under contract that add to the value of a team like the Clippers. What if Sterling agrees to sell the team but asks for a billion dollars? Who would ever pay that much above the current market value? And if a group came forward just to get rid of Sterling, wouldn’t he be unfairly rewarded by receiving such a large premium for the team? That brings us to the same conclusions as last week. It’s very difficult to legislate social issues. That’s why the only way to fight this type of prejudice starts in our own homes, in our businesses, churches, with our friends, etc. Society just can’t tolerate it. Nor can we support groups that clearly come forward at times May 9, 2014

s p o rt s La Quinta Preps For Showdown With Palm Desert BaseBall Roundup By daniel maRinelli

La Quinta – By completing a two-game sweep of the Cathedral City Lions (3-5 in DVL, 9-9 Overall) on Friday, the La Quinta Blackhawks (17-9 in DVL, 8-2 Overall) have set themselves up for a DVL title showdown in two weeks. Freshman ace pitcher Jeremiah Estrada – who’s also the DVL leader in strikeouts and ERA – led the home-team Blackhawks with a two-hit, one-run, complete game shutout of the Lions. In addition to his five strikeouts, except for giving up a walk in the seventh inning, Estrada had four consecutive one-two-three innings after the third frame. “I didn’t know much about him before he got here,” Blackhawks head coach Brent Conley said. “I knew that he had a power arm. I was very surprised to see the composure that he possesses as a 14 year-old kid, usually you don’t get that type of composure out of a young kid.” Estrada was not the only pitcher who was composed on the bump; senior Sabino Ramirez threw a stellar game for the Lions, too. While mimicking Estrada’s complete game effort, Ramirez struck out six, and despite eventually losing 4-1, just gave up one earned run. Ramirez would have kept the game tied but for the Lions’ inability to make plays. Ramirez only gave up five hits, but the Lions had five errors to match. After already allowing an unearned Blackhawks run in the first inning, in the bottom half of the 3rd inning, with two runners on, Ramirez threw Justin Cooney’s bunt into right field, allowing the two runs to score. Angel Palomares followed the

error with a single, driving in the 3rd run of the inning, and the Blackhawks fourth run of the game. “Sabino’s a really good pitcher,” Coach Conley said. “What I preach to those guys is you got to put the ball in play. You got to get good pitches to hit, and try to hit them hard. We didn’t chase too many things out of the strike zone. A couple at-bats we did, but that’s going to happen.” With a bye week this week, two games left in the season, and down only two games in the DVL, the Blackhawks have plenty of time to prepare for their rival – the dynastic Aztecs. Palm Desert, however, will be playing a two-game series with the Palm Springs Indians during the Blackhawks’ break. We’ll play some (scrimmages); we’ll keep working, Coach Conley said. “We’ll work on our defense because Palm Desert’s a very good offensive team. Anything that will come up in a game, will be covered in the next Monday through Friday, so five days – we’ll get after it. “ The Aztecs’ offense is good. The last four games, Palm Desert has averaged 11.75 runs a game. The less productive La Quinta offense only scored 5.25 runs in its last four games. The Blackhawks are going to have to play flawless defense and have outstanding pitching performances in both games to finish the season with the unlikely sweep. When the Aztecs meet the Blackhawks next Tuesday, the Aztecs will be playing for their sixth consecutive DVL championship. La Quinta will be playing for a share of the DVL title, and its first championship in over nine years.

If La Quinta loses the first game, Palm Desert will be crowned the champion, once again. If La Quinta loses both games to Palm Desert, and Indio

wins its final four games, Indio will overtake La Quinta for second place in the DVL. “They’re undefeated; they’re a great team,” Coach Conley said. “In order to do the kinds of things we want to do, we’re going to have to beat them twice – which I think we’re capable of – I think

we have a excellent core and a good team.” The decisive La Quinta – Palm Desert series starts at La Quinta High School Tuesday, May 13. La Quinta travels to Palm Desert Friday, May 16 to finish off the regular season. Both games start at 6:30 pm.
