Debut of New Hard Rock Hotel Show Doubles as Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards Preview

By Pat Krause PALM SPRINGS – The new Hard Rock Hotel Palm Springs debuted Top Rock, the first of its offerings under its entertainment banner The Edge, to help preview the 20th Annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards last Friday, November 8. The invitation-only occasion was held to announce those who will be honored at the next Steve Chase awards gala, which will

take place on February 8 at the Palm Springs Convention Center and recognize 30 years of the Desert AIDS Project (DAP) through music and celebrity entertainment. The honorees at that event early next year will be Terri Ketover of DAP’s 100 Women giving program and David and Glenn Ostergaard of DAP’s Partners for Life giving program. A cocktail party was held in the lower section of the hotel

before guests gathered in the ballroom for the performance of Top Rock. The troupe, comprised of 12 singers and dancers and a five-piece band, emulates musical entities such as Aerosmith, The Beatles, Michael Jackson and Queen. “Once again, our incredible gala co-chairs Barbara Keller and Jim Casey came up with another great idea to make some of most loyal supporters feel even more

special,” said David Brinkman, CEO of DAP. “And as usual, they also have a great line-up of activism and entertainment for the Steve Chase gala.” Kick-off sponsors included Integrated Wealth Management, Wells Fargo, Walgreens, Harold Matzner and Rabobank. The evening also served as a fundraiser for DAP. As one of the signature fundraisers for DAP, the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards last

year raised more than $1.4 million for client services. DAP serves 2,200 people living with HIV and AIDS by providing comprehensive support, including medical care, case management, and social services including food, housing and counseling. DAP also offers free and confidential HIV testing at various locations. To learn more, call 760-323-2118 or visit desertaidsproject.org.

Adam Sanchez Jumps Ahead of Yvonne Parks in Election By Desert Star Staff DESERT HOT SPRINGS – Just when it looked like things were going to remain mostly the same in this city after Election Day on Nov. 5, and incumbent mayoral candidate Yvonne Parks was going to retain the top seat at City Hall, the political landscape

north of I-10 got all shook up. The surprise shift in the days after the polls closed came as provisional and mail-in ballots were being counted. The uncertified totals as of noon last Saturday, and as Desert Star Weekly went to press on the evening of Tuesday, Nov. 12, had Sanchez at 1,042

votes (43.2 percent) and Parks at 1,030 votes (42.7 percent) — a whopping difference of 12 votes. The third candidate in the mayoral race, economist JohnPaul Valdez, garnered 340 votes (14.1 percent). Continues on Page 4

The Necessary Evil of Credit Cards

By Kevin Powell As we head into the holiday season, some of us will spend nearly as much money as we do throughout the year. Credit cards represent a large percentage of all purchases, even though credit card usage has been declining over the past several years. If you use your plastic, be sure to watch out for retailer credit card surcharges that went into law at the start of this year. Retailers in 40 states can charge an extra four percent for consumers who pay with a credit card. California does not allow this. No state allows extra charges for a debit card or online purchases.

About half of us still pay cash for the majority of our purchases, although carrying a lot of cash around during the holidays is not necessarily the safest thing. I highly recommend that my clients use their credit cards. However, I stress that they must pay them off every month. That’s the only way any of us should ever use a credit card. Unfortunately nearly 60% of us carry a credit card balance. Today, the average household owes nearly $20,000 in credit card debt. If you use your cards, pick a card that has no annual fee. Make certain you understand payment terms. If you are a day late on some cards, your interest rate can soar to more than 20%. Find a card that offers perks you can use. Some popular perks today are extended warranties, purchase protection, roadside assistance, car rental insurance, travel accident and trip cancellation insurance, on-

line shopping bonuses, cash rebates, free airline tickets, hotel rooms so on. If you use a particular bank’s credit card to pay your mobile phone bill (be sure to pay on time and not miss any payments), they include insurance on your cell phone. This is a great perk if you’ve ever purchased insurance from a phone carrier. Many carriers charge $9.95 a month for phone insurance and some also have a ridiculously high deductible. Most cards have a low deductible. With the cost of smartphones today, this is a great perk. If you have multiple phones on your calling plan, savings can add up even faster. How do you find out if your card has some of these perks? Just ask! Kevin Powell has been a financial advisor for 28 years and can be reached at kpplanner1@ aol.com.

Cat City Renames Street for Founders

Hillery Family to be Honored with Downtown Dedication Nov. 14 By Frieda Noone CATHEDRAL CITY – A street renamed for the founding family of this municipality will be unveiled downtown this Thursday, Nov. 14. In the 1920s, Williard Hillery, at the urging of his sister, Luella Allen, and her husband, George, relocated from Alaska to the California desert — settling in Cathedral City. Hillery met and married his wife, Marguerite, raising two sons: one became the Cathedral City Postmaster, the other son to be the Mayor. Williard Hillery, once the vice president of the Bank of Alaska and the paymaster for the Yukon Railroad and Navigation Company, used his financial background to purchase and

secure the site on which Palm Springs High School is now located. He also secured the land for the local cemetery, now known as Desert Memorial Park on Ramon Road. Hillery had a vision of opportunity and a good future for Cathedral City. He is credited with founding the Chamber of Commerce in 1937, serving as its president from 1939-1941. He partnered with neighboring founding fathers George Allen, Plumley, Van Fleet and Grove — all later would have street names to commemorate their efforts. Hillery was instrumental in the building and management of the area schools; he assisted with funding and forming the Cathedral City Sanitation District

and wrote a weekly column in The Desert Sun during the 1930s and 1940s (many of his articles can be viewed on microfilm at the Palm Springs Library). Marguerite, a graduate of Woodbury Business College and banking experience, managed the financial books for the Cathedral City Chamber of Commerce and managed rental property. She is credited with founding the Cathedral City Library and the Cathedral City Women’s Club. The Hillery boys, John and Robert (Bob), played integral roles in the community — returning to the “village” after serving in Navy to become Cathedral City’s postmaster. Bob spent his days climbing and hunting in the hills and canyons south of the Highway 111 with pal Bill Carey. Bob became The Desert Sun’s first paper boy, delivering papers on a bike he won in a contest. Bob fulfilled his father’s requests of becoming an Eagle Scout — graduating college and becoming a commissioned officer. Bob was a scout leader, earning his Eagle Scout and Silver Beaver designation. After the war, Bob was an insurance agent, receiving his CLU licensing and certifications and using his skills as an inheritance tax appraiser for Riverside County. Working for the county, Bob became so proficient in real estate appraisal the he eventually chose appraisal as his private profession. Bob Hillery served as a city councilman for eight years with the City of Cathedral City he was the first mayor elected by the voting public. In addition to the street renaming, a new gallery of historical photographs is on display at the Desert IMAX Theatre in honor of the family. The Cathedral City Historical Society will dedicate Hillery Road at 2 p.m. at the intersection of Monty Hall and First Street, one block north of E. Palm Canyon Drive. The event is open to public.

SuRpRiSE poLL VAuLT in DHS Continued from Page 1 Parks clearly wasn’t thrilled with this development when approached by local media, crediting the numbers shift in part to a late absentee ballot campaign by Sanchez she felt may have been strategized possibly by outside union and/or Democratic Party efforts. She affirmed that she would consider seeking a recount, which could delay the final certification of the election indefinitely. Sanchez countered Parks in interviews by saying that his own neighborhood-by-neighborhood foot campaign, along with his

high visibility at local businesses, is what ultimately helped him pull ahead. The turn in the race results was overshadowed by the news that the city was facing a projected $3.37 million budget shortfall (with some rumors pegging that figure significantly higher) and that municipal bankruptcy might be in its near-future. Of the three candidates, Sanchez had most sternly warned about the dangers of the city’s teetering finances in mayoral candidate interviews conducted by this publication last month.

Mayoral race incumbent Yvonne Parks suggested she would seek a recount. (Photo by Bruce Montgomery)

Adam Sanchez knows the road ahead is tough in DHS, but he’s ready for the challenge. (Photo by Dean Lamanna) “I’m feeling great about winning the election,” Sanchez said confidently in a chat at Desert Star Weekly’s offices this past Tuesday morning. “But the deficit points out the seriousness of the challenges we face. We were led to believe it was at least a manageable situation (based on the city’s reserves), but this was a bombshell.” The timing of the news about the shortfall, coming almost immediately after the initial election results in the middle of last week, has also raised questions about who in the Desert Hot Springs city government knew how dire the city’s finances were — and when — and whether specific information was deliberately

withheld until after the election. “That’s something we’re still trying to find out,” said Sanchez, noting that the interim city manager, Bob Adams, was vacationing overseas at the time of the shortfall revelation. Adams has since said that city leaders were warned weeks ago of dire budge problems. Sanchez, who has long expressed frustration with the city’s seemingly entrenched negative public perception, acknowledged that this latest Desert Hot Springs body blow wasn’t going to make his job as mayor any easier. “The people here are fed up with that,” he said. “Somehow we must all work together to straighten out the budget issues, which will

require some tough cuts, and get to a point where Desert Hot Springs can reach its full potential.” Third-place mayoral candidate John-Paul Valdez, meanwhile, told Desert Star weekly that he had initially intended to send out a press release about the postelection drama, but decided to hold off on commenting — for now. “Because the information that is reaching my campaign has yet to be verified, I cannot speak further on the subject,” Valdez said in an email. “Many questions remain, but rather than make speculative statements or open the wound and city to further suffering as regards the election, I am going to wait for the recount at least.”

stigma by making voluntary HIV testing the medical standard of care in the Coachella Valley, making HIV testing and HIV care available to everyone (including those who don’t see a doctor on a regular basis), and educating the entire community on how to protect their own health and prevent infection. “Desert Regional Medical Center has been serving the needs of those with HIV / AIDS since the early days of the AIDS epidemic, when the community was filled with uncertainty,” said Carolyn Caldwell, president and CEO of Desert Regional Medical Center. “Advances in medicine have increased the length and quality of life for those with HIV, but Desert Regional remains committed to the public health of our community and to helping work toward the eradication of HIV.” In addition to supporting the educational and outreach components of the campaign, Desert Regional Medical Center and JFK Memorial Hospital, both part of Tenet Healthcare, will make HIV testing a standard option for people who need blood tests as they enter the emergency room. The campaign will also create a new, regional Linkage to Care Network that enables providers to quickly refer patients for additional treatment, ensuring that any individual who tests positive for HIV receives

the medical treatment and counseling they need. The campaign is being supported by 50 community partners, including healthcare agencies, elected officials, municipalities, communityand faith-based organizations, educational institutions, businesses and foundations. The efforts will be coordinated through the Desert AIDS Project. “Eighteen months ago, D.A.P. took the initiative to bring all of these partners to the table in order to design and plan the ‘Get Tested Coachella Valley’ campaign,” said David Brinkman, chief executive officer of Desert AIDS Project. “No one agency can do this alone. The campaign has been created by — and our success will be driven by — the full coalition of community partners. Each organization has signed a partnership pledge detailing what they will contribute in terms of endorsements, education, expertise and implementation support.” Desert Regional Medical Center has been serving the needs of those with HIV/AIDS since the early days of the AIDS epidemic. In 1995, the year that AIDS was the leading cause of death in American among people ages 25 to 44, a group of dedicated volunteers at Desert Regional — led by the late Guy Lawson — worked with the hospital to transform the third floor of the center’s East Tower

into the Special Care Unit. Those volunteers raised money to refurnish and redecorate the floor to make it feel more like home. There was a family room where relatives could rest. Visiting was allowed around the clock. Desert Regional provided nursing and therapy support and the volunteers provided the emotional and community support. The development of antiviral mediations has allowed for more successful treatment of HIV / AIDS outside the hospital, improving the quality and length of life for those infected. AIDS has fallen from No. 1 to No. 6 on the list of leading causes of death for those 25 to 44. Because of this progress, Desert Regional has converted the Special Care Unit into a telemetry unit for the monitoring of heart conditions. “Still, we must not rest until HIV is eliminated as a health threat,” said Desert Regional CEO Caldwell. “Desert Regional Medical Center is continuing its commitment to the community by its lead sponsorship of the Get Tested initiative. We are proud to partner with Desert AIDS project and the other community organizations to take the stigma out of HIV testing so we can ensure that everyone gets the care they need.” For more info, visit gettestedcoachellavalley.org.

‘Get Tested’ Gets Desert Regional Boost

By Larry Jameson PALM SPRINGS – Desert Regional Medical Center has announced that the hospital will become lead sponsor of “Get Tested Coachella Valley,” committing $1.5 million over three years to an ambitious public health campaign designed to dramatically reduce HIV and improve access to care for those

who test positive. One of the most visible parts of that campaign was unveiled at an event on the hospital’s campus — a 24-foot mobile testing clinic that will travel to locations in and around the Coachella Valley offering free, anonymous HIV testing to residents. The campaign also is committed to removing fear and

The volunteers were asked to rate their level of life satisfaction at the start and end of the study. Over the two-week period, satisfaction ratings were found to decline the more people used Facebook. “This is a result of critical importance because it goes to the very heart of the influence that social networks may have on people’s lives,” said University of Michigan neuroscientist and co-author Dr. John Jonides. The “experience sampling” technique used by the Michigan psychologists is a recognized method for measuring how people think, feel and behave in their day-to-day lives. The researchers did find people spend more time on Facebook when they were feeling lonely — and not simply because they were alone at that precise moment. “Would engaging in any solitary activity similarly predict declines in well-being? We suspect that they would not because people often derive pleasure from engaging in some solitary activities (e.g., exercising, reading),” the report said. According to the study, almost all the participants said they used Facebook to stay in touch with friends, but only 23 percent said they used the social networking site to meet new people.

More than three-quarters said they shared good things happening in their communities on the site, while 36 percent said they would share bad things on Facebook as well. Dr. Jonides warned that the study’s findings were probably most relevant to people who spent too much time on Facebook and that the study did not offer a full comparison with “direct” social contact. He also said that since Facebook was such a recent phenomenon, society was still learning to use the platform. “As a society as a whole, we haven’t really learnt the rules that make us work well with Facebook,” he said, adding some people become unable to control their experience with it. By Art Kunkin (Mr. Life Extension) Psychologists at the University of Michigan claim that the more time people spend on Facebook, the unhappier they feel. Their study was published in August 2013 in the online peerreviewed scientific journal PLOS (Public Library of Science) ONE. “On the surface, Facebook provides an invaluable resource for fulfilling the basic human need for social connection,” said study leader Dr. Ethan Kross. “But rather than enhance well-being, we found that Facebook use predicts the opposite result — it undermines it.” The researchers recruited 82 young adults, all of whom had smartphones and Facebook accounts. To assess their personal levels of well-being, participants were sent questions by text message at five random times each day for two weeks. Facebook has more than a billion members, with some 500,000 logging in daily. Participants were asked how they felt “right now,” how worried or lonely they were, and to what extent they had been using Facebook or interacting with other people directly. Researchers also wanted to know about how much direct interaction participants had with people — either face-toface or by phone — between questionnaires.

Neil Sedaka Coachella Valley-Bound

Agua Caliente Resort Hosts Veteran Pop Singer-Songwriter Nov. 16 By Frieda Noone RANCHO MIRAGE – Singer, songwriter and musical legend Neil Sedaka will perform at The Show at Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa this Saturday, Nov. 16. During his nearly six-decade career, Sedaka was one of the first teen pop superstars of the 1950s and a popular artist in the 1960s-70s. He continues as an enduring force in music. Audiences thrill to his performances of favorites such as “The Diary, “Oh! Carol, “Stairway to Heaven, “Calendar Girl and “Breaking Up is Hard to Do. Sedaka’s interest in music

took hold when he was a small boy. At age nine, he began intensive classical piano training at the prestigious Julliard School of Music in New York City. Sedaka’s introduction to a neighbor, Howard Greenfield, began one of the most successful songwriting partnerships ever — selling 40 million records from 1959-63. He catapulted to stardom after Connie Francis recorded his “Stupid Cupid; she then sang the Sedaka / Greenfield theme for the 1960 MGM film classic “Where the Boys Are, and it became her biggest hit. Later, Sedaka signed with RCA to write and perform his own material.

Song Legend Graham Nash to McCallum

By Larry Jameson PALM DESERT – Graham Nash, one of music’s legendary singer-songwriters and founding

member of the iconic bands Crosby, Still & Nash and The Hollies, appears at the McCallum Theatre for one performance only

By Larry Jameson INDIO – Rosie Welmas, owner of the semi-pro football team the Desert Chiefs, which finished first and undefeated during the regular season of

play in the Pacific Coast Football Conference (PCFC), has been named Owner of the Year by the website Semi-Pro Talk (semiprotalk.com). Welmas, who started the

this Monday, Nov. 18. Nash has helped shape the world around him through influential music for more than four decades. He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice — with Crosby, Stills & Nash in 1997 and with The Hollies in 2010. He was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2009. Born in the seacoast town of Blackpool, England, and raised near Manchester, Nash was appointed OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) by Queen Elizabeth in 2010. That same year, the group with which he first rose to fame, The Hollies, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their 1960s chart success rivaled that of The Beatles and the Rolling Stones, with hits including “On a Carousel,” “Bus Stop,” “Carrie Anne” and “Pay You Back with Interest.” Nash departed The Hollies in 1968, and went on to form Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN) with David Crosby and Stephen Stills. Among the classic songs he’s composed are “Marrakesh Express,” “Teach Your Children,” “Our House” and “Just a Song Before I Go.” The trio’s landmark 1969 album “Crosby, Stills and Nash” was a strong debut for the band, instantly lifting them to stardom. In 2012, Nash produced “CSN 2012,” the first live video

performance release from CSN in over 20 years. Recorded in early spring, the DVD (and BluRay) includes conversations with David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Nash, and interviews from their band and crew. As a solo artist, Nash’s repertoire reaches back to 1971’s “Songs for Beginners,” bookended by 2002’s “Songs for Survivors.” His ongoing collaboration as a duo with David Crosby also dates back that far, captured with the 1971 live recording “Another Stoney Evening.” All aspects of his musical life are surveyed in the three-CD boxed set Reflections (2009). With his photography, Nash has drawn honors including the New York Institute of Technology’s Arts & Technology Medal and Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters and the Hollywood Film Festival’s inaugural Hollywood Visionary Cyber Award. His work is collected in the book “Eye to Eye: Photographs.” He curated others’ work in the volume “Taking Aim: Unforgettable Rock ‘n’ Roll Photographs Selected by Graham Nash (2009).” In 1990, Nash’s passion for photography led him to establish Nash Editions, which evolved out of experimentation in the late ’80s scanning and manipulating his photographs on a computer. Now one of the world’s top fine art photographic printmaking houses, Nash

Editions is recognized by the Smithsonian Institution for its role in the invention of digital fine art printing. Since 2005, its first IRIS 3047 printer and one of its first published works — Nash’s 1969 portrait of David Crosby — have been in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. Nash’s voice continues to be heard in support of peace, and social and environmental justice. The No Nukes/Musicians United for Safe Energy (MUSE) concerts he organized with Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, and John Hall in 1979 remain seminal benefit events. In 2011, he was instrumental in bringing MUSE back to the forefront with a concert to benefit Japan disaster relief and groups promoting non-nuclear energy worldwide. In addition to CSN, the event at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Northern California featured, among others, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Jason Mraz, the Doobie Brothers, Kitaro and Jonathan Wilson. Also in 2011, Graham was part of an all-star concert benefiting the Fund for Civility, Respect and Understanding in Tucson. Nash goes onstage at the McCallum, located at 73000 Fred Waring Drive, at 8 p.m. Tickets are priced at $75, $55, $45 and $35 and are available online at mccallumtheatre.com or by calling the box office, 760-340-2787.

Happy Trails at YMCA’s Sundown Hoedown Story and Photos by Pat Krause RANCHO MIRAGE – The YMCA held its 26th annual Hoedown at Sundown at the Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa last Saturday, Nov. 9. This fun-filled event raises money for the YMCA’s 44 sites in the Coachella valley through ticket sales and silent and live auctions. There were tables of silent auction items and 11 live auction items that included trips, tickets to the Frank Sinatra Celebrity Golf parties and The BNP Parabas Tennis Open, and dinners for 50 people. Guests came in western garb and cowboy hats. There were games and photos by the “jail” during the cocktail hour, and music was supplied by Billy Erickson and the Bandits during a BBQ buffet dinner. YMCA Chair Michele DeMille and President of the Board Jim Latting, along with Terry Bona (bottom photo), all had a great time. And entertainer Big John Miller and YMCA CEO Rob Ballew (top left photo) seemed to hit it off famously. Patrick Evans of KPSP Local 2 News (top right photo, shown with “Bandit” Billy Erickson) was the emcee for the evening and talked about the wonderful work the YMCA does in the Valley. The Y serves over 3,400 kids before and after school. All the money raised will help the Y with its childcare and financial assistance programs, as well as youth sports and fitness that help build self-esteem.

(critically lauded star of Curtis’s 2003 film “Love Actually.”) The family includes two children, Tim (Domhnall Gleeson) and his free-spirited sister (Lydia Wilson). On Tim’s 21st birthday, his dad calls him in for a little chat — not about the birds and the

bees, but about a family secret that involves only the men in their clan. According to dad, they have the unique ability to travel back in time and actually change things. The adjustments cannot alter history in any way, but they can serve to repair embarrassing November 13, 2013

There are some truly oddball members in Tim’s family — such as his well-dressed but totally dotty uncle (Richard Corderly) who, while sweet and lovable, is unaware of what is going on around him. Tim’s mother, on the other hand, is a pillar of strength, while his beloved sister is a delightful mess who falls in love for all the wrong reasons. Another interesting character is a family friend and playwright (Tom Hollander); the London opening of his play, and Tim’s participation in it, is one of the film’s hilarious highlights. Gleeson’s turn as Tim evolves from an insecure young romantic into a doting husband and dad. His future wife Mary (Rachel McAdams) is warm and funny, and their relationship provides the movie’s loving, if not completely solid, core. Equally effective is the bond Tim shares with his father. Their chats and hard-fought ping pong games reveal a fatherson friendship that is touching beyond words. And their final scene together will stay with you long after the credits roll.

Per his father’s instructions, he heads straight to his bedroom closet, closes the door, clenches his fists and focuses on the disastrous New Year’s Eve party he just attended at his parent’s home. To his utter amazement he is able to go back and correct all of his social mistakes. He no longer appears clueless and bumbling at the event; thanks to his time travel alterations, he’ll now be remembered as clever and in control by all who attended the party. In most cases this fantasy element works well, particularly in creating genuinely funny scenarios where Tim can turn humorous disaster into comedic triumph. At other times, however, the device is distracting, since Tim’s family and friends are so genuinely endearing. Their interactive stories and relationships could just as easily “ A b o u t T i m e , ” f ro m have been told without the time Universal, is rated R for language travel element. and some sexual content.

Desert Stars Ready to Dance Again

By Frieda Noone PALM SPRINGS – Those competing to succeed local TV reporter / anchor Bianca Rae as the 2013 Dancing Desert Star in the annual Dancing with the Desert Stars benefit show will doing their best moves at the Renaissance Palm Springs Hotel on Friday, November 22. “The judges recognized how high Bianca set the bar last year — she was graceful yet athletic with both her compulsory and chosen dances,” said Dave Morgan, president of Reaction Productions, who created the fundraiser for Desert AIDS Project in 2011. “But then, Ron Duran was a pretty exciting act to follow from our first year in 2011. Who knows? Maybe someone will beat both of their performances this year.” Last year’s “Fan Favorite” — chosen by audience donations — was Margie Taft, but it’s anybody’s guess right now who will delight the judges or the audience. Eight competitors — four women and four men — will each dance twice with their respective professional dance partners.

This year’s women include Heather Coladonato, president and CEO of the Desert Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce; Jan Harnik, mayor of Palm Desert; Katharine Johnson, president of the Palm Springs Fireman’s Association; and Valerie Powers Smith, counsel at Slovak Baron Empey Murphy & Pinkney, LLP in Palm Springs. The 2013 male competitors are Dr. Frederick Eko of the Plastic Surgery Institute in Rancho Mirage; Tony Marchese, co-owner of Trio Restaurant and The Purple Room in Palm Springs; Assemblymember V. Manuel Pérez, California’s 56th District; and Ernie Santora, president of 1st Community Insurance Services in Palm Springs. “I’m sure this year’s eight competitors are going to have as much fun as I did last year — all while raising essential funds for us to help women and children affected by HIV or AIDS,” said Terri Ketover, chair of the 100 Women annual giving program at Desert AIDS Project. “In addition to helping provide essential healthcare services to our clients as we do on a year-round

basis, the 100 Women program has recently provided back-toschool supplies and uniforms for 126 disadvantaged children of D.A.P. clients right here in our community. “We’ll also be helping to provide family meals and gift cards to these families to make the holidays a bit brighter. This event is such a tremendous help in making

this kind of work possible.” Cheering sections are already lining up to support the competitor they are sure will dance away with the mirrored ball trophy. Make sure to join the fun at the Renaissance Palm Springs, located at 888 E Tahquitz Canyon Way, beginning with cocktails at 6 p.m. and competition warms-up at 7:30.

Front-row tickets are $175, or $1,750 for a table of 10. Premium tickets/ tables are available for $125 / $1,250 and Preferred at $75 / $750. General admission seating is $50 / $500. Tickets can be purchased online at desertaidsproject. org/go/dwds or by calling 760-969-5743.

DESERT HOT SPRINGS – The city and its Cultural and Community Affairs Commission invited the public to a special Veterans Day Weekend event, “Remembering the USO,” this past Monday, Nov. 11. The honorary celebration paid tribute not only to U.S. veterans and their families who have sacrificed so much for our freedom, but to the USO and its many decades of entertaining our troops serving so bravely overseas. Guests speakers who appeared to pay the their respects and convey their thanks (and to stay and enjoy some vintage USO-style entertainment) at Veterans Park on Palm Drive included Mayor Yvonne Parks and Congressman Paul Ruiz. Attendees were served light refreshments to tame the midday desert heat. There was both a warm bonding of community and a strengthened sense of shared patriotism in the air as commemoration gave way to retro dancing and mild revelry. Most prevalent of all was the gratitude expressed toward those who served in uniform and those who raised and loved them. For without them, the rest of us would not be able to strive for success and enjoy life to the fullest. The staff of Desert Star Weekly thanks all U.S. war veterans and their families. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. By Jackie Devereaux PALM SPRINGS – The U.S. Supreme Court handed down a historic ruling on Wednesday, Jun. 26 to grant same sex marriages across the nation. In their ruling on DOMA and California’s Proposition 8, the justices overturned a previous lower court ruling which declared same sex marriage unconstitutional. Blackhawks Rend Aztecs, Fly Victorious high school football

By Dan Marinelli LA QUINTA – Calling the finish to the Desert Valley League’s (DVL) championshipdeciding game “exciting” would be a significant understatement. With a two-score lead, and less than five minutes remaining, the first place Palm Desert High School Aztecs (4-1 DVL, 5-5 overall) truly believed their seven-game, seven-year losing streak to the second-place La Quinta High School Blackhawks (4-1 DVL, 7-3 overall) was finally coming to an end. The league championship was not the only award up for contention at La Quinta High School last Friday; because of the schools’ rivalry status, every year for more than two decades, the Victory Flag has been awarded to the winner between the Aztecs and the Blackhawks — a prize the Blackhawks have also won each of the last seven years. Midway through the third quarter, La Quinta star running back Vincent Guzman ran in his second touchdown of the game and extended the Blackhawks lead, 20-10. Due to their lack of offensive production, it was feasible the Aztecs were not going to win the game. Surprisingly, the opposite could not have been truer, and leading the Aztecs’ charge was quarterback Kyle Kabeary. After the Guzman touchdown, Kabeary kicked his second successful field goal of the game. At the start of the fourth

quarter, on the following Blackhawks possession, Kabeary, who also plays defense, intercepted Blackhawks quarterback Michael Avina and ran the pick 41 yards for the dramatic, game-tying touchdown. Kabeary impressively scored all of Palm Desert’s first 20 points of the game. Despite the 20-20 tie score, all of the momentum was now with the Aztecs. The atcapacity crowd of at least 5,000 anticipated a great finish. On their following possession, still in shock from Palm Desert’s scoring surge, La Quinta was immediately stopped and forced to punt. Everything was going the Aztecs way, and star running back Trae Riek was feeling left out. On the first play after regaining control of the ball, Riek took a handoff 63 yards for the touchdown, and the Aztecs claimed their first lead of the game, 27-20. Palm Desert’s unanswered point tally was now at 17, and after another uncharacteristic Guzman fumble, Kabeary would make his presence felt one more time in a big way. With 4:30 left in regulation, Kabeary lined up for the ridiculous NFL-range, 50-yard field goal that — if successful — would have created a twoscore lead and presumably iced the game for the Aztecs. Kabeary’s kick could not have been more accurate, and the Aztecs pranced off the

Needing to progress the ball quickly, the Blackhawks were forced to use an array of offensive weapons.

Blackhawks head coach Dan Armstrong. “But we knew we could move the ball, we had been moving the ball well all night. The problem was moving it quickly enough, which took us out of our running game.” In the final 1:57, Blackhawks wide receiver Patrick Lucas made two of the most important catches of his football career. First, Lucas caught an 11-yard, momentum shifting, touchdown pass to shrink the Aztec lead to three. With such little time remaining, La Quinta High School was forced to onside

kick. The Aztecs got penalized twice trying to recover the onside kick. On the third kick attempt, Lucas made his second huge catch of the night giving the Blackhawks possession. Now, down by only four and primed to advance up the field the ball at-will, coach Armstrong did what he had done all season — put the ball in the hands of Guzman — arguably the league’s best playmaker. But for a clutch 15-yard catch by Blackhawks wide receiver Jesus Aguirre, Guzman did the rest of the work — carrying the ball 26 yards, in three plays, for a touchdown to put La Quinta up for good, 34-30. In addition to his two rushing touchdowns, Guzman finished the game with 35 carries and 332 yards rushing — the most yards he has ever rushed for in a single game. “When Palm Desert and La Quinta play,” said Coach Armstrong “one team can be 10-0 and the other team can be 0-9, and 90 percent of the time, you’re going to get a game like that. Rarely are they going to be one-sided.” With the victory, La Quinta extended their winning streak over Palm Desert to eight straight games. They were presented the Victory Flag, crowned DVL co-champions and were awarded the top seed out of DVL for the playoffs. The Blackhawks’ playoff journey begins against Ontariobased Chaffey High School at La Quinta High School. The Aztecs will host Wildomarbased Elsinore High School at Palm Desert High School. Both games are this Friday and start at 7:30 p.m.

Desert Chiefs Put Mercury in Retrograde semi-pro football

By Dan Marinelli LA QUINTA – The Desert Chiefs struggled all night but somehow managed to pull out a victory in last Saturday’s Pacific Coast Football Conference (PCFC) semi-final at La Quinta High School. Coming off of back-to-back bye weeks, it was understandable that the Desert Chiefs would be a bit rusty against the tough Moreno Valley Mercury. The Mercury, having pushed the Desert Chiefs to the brink in a 20-17 loss earlier this season, came into the semi-final looking to catch the Desert Chiefs on their heels again. The Desert Chiefs did, in fact, start the game a bit out of sync — allowing 14 unanswered Mercury points and relinquishing their first lead to a team in over a month. Most of the game, the Desert Chiefs could not get anything going offensively; finding any sort of consistent rhythm was difficult. Something to note: the Desert Chiefs’ best offensive playmaker, former La Quinta High School Blackhawk Komani Harper, suffered a minor concussion in the second quarter and was removed from the game. Desert Chiefs head coach Josiah Jackson wasn’t sure if Harper would be ready to

was backbreaking — with only 2:10 left in the game. The lategame turnover, combined with a lack of offensive production was thought, for sure, to ascertain the Mercury victory. With 1:56 left in the game and control of the pigskin, all the Mercury had to do was run the clock out. There was too much time for the Mercury to just down the ball; they needed to run the ball to wind down the clock a bit more. With the championship in their sights, there was still one rule the Mercury had to follow: do not fumble the ball. On the second play of what

should have been the closing drive, Desert Chiefs linebacker Aaron Aguilar made a huge, gamesaving play, to force and recover a fumble that gave the Desert Chiefs a second chance to win the game at the Mercury seven-yard line. Also, this gave Rausch one more opportunity to redeem his threeinterception game. Taking only two plays to score, Rausch connected with Gaston Bailey for his second touchdown pass of the game. The

Desert Chiefs took the lead 17-14 with only 1:25 left to play. The Mercury received the ball with one final chance to tie or win the game. With 36 seconds left on the game clock, safety Alfredo Melendez intercepted the ball, solidifying the Desert Chiefs’ victory. This Saturday, at Granada Hills High School in Granada Hills, the Desert Chiefs will play for the PCFC championship against the Central Coast Seminoles — a team the Desert Chiefs beat 30-0 earlier in the season. Game starts at 6 p.m., just after the PCFC allstar game at 2:30.

play next week. “I want to make sure his concussion is not severe to where it might cause future injury to him,” Jackson said. “As of right now, we’re just waiting for a confirmation from (the doctor).” Had Harper been playing the entire game, the Desert Chiefs likely would have scored more points. Fortunately, they had just enough offensive weapons to win the game. At the end of the half, Desert Chiefs wide receiver Nick Lee caught a 16-yard pass and outran the entire Mercury secondary — an extra 34 yards — for the 50-yard touchdown catch. The momentum-seizing touchdown shrank the Mercury lead down to four, and the score at halftime was 14-10. What kept the Mercury from running away with the game was the Desert Chiefs tenacious defense. The Desert Chiefs did not allow one point to the Mercury in the second half. However, the Desert Chiefs were not scoring any points, either. Desert Chiefs quarterback Brent Rausch probably showed the most rust after his-two week break. Having thrown one interception in the first half, Rausch added two more in the fourth quarter — one of which The Desert Chiefs meet the Mercury at midfield to decide possession.
