This parade is one of the biggest in the Desert and brings thousands of people, young and old to El Paseo to watch. The floats are made by local businesses, colleges, charities, military and political to name a few. It takes over an hour for the floats, bands and entrees to make their way down El Paseo in Palm Desert. There was a fly over at noon by an antique plane to start the parade. Thousands lined both sides of the street in anticipation with many getting there early to get a prime seat. Parade lovers

Can Board Just Give Them Some Space?
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Dear Mr. Richardson: My HOA has a board that changes all the time. People with agendas run and many times they leave after one year. The question is whether the HOA can continually “grant” various owners rights into the greenbelt/ common area. Shouldn’t there be disclosures to the entire membership of each and all such rights granted, and not just adjoining neighbors? In theory we all own the common area, and it is being chopped up and “permitted”

Dear P.W.: The Davis-Stirling Act limits the ability of HOA boards to give exclusive use rights over HOA common area. About eleven years ago, the statute now known as Civil Code 4600 was added to the Act, barring HOA boards from granting exclusive use rights to a homeowner unless 67% of all the HOA members approved it. The statute ties the hands of HOA boards, but for a good reason. Common area other than exclusive use common area is an asset for all residents. Green belts, planted areas, walkways and other common
areas may be adjacent to individual residences, and it is natural that homeowners may wish to expand their “personal space” by gating off walkways, or fencing off more yard area. However, this would detract from the rest of the community, which benefits from the feeling of openness that comes from such areas remaining purely common and shared, and not converted to a single owner’s use. Homeowners often can be angry with the HOA attorney because they want to take over some common area (or already have done so without HOA permission) only to discover that the HOA board cannot do so, even if they wished to allow it. Civil Code 4600 requires a homeowner membership vote, upon 30 days’ notice, using the same double envelope secret ballot process as with board elections. Of course, I
didn’t write Civil Code 4600, but that doesn’t matter to a homeowner frustrated by not getting what they want. But if the board violates the statute in this regard, the act could be set aside by a later board or by court order (Civil 4605). There are some narrow exceptions to vote requirement of Civil 4600. The most commonly applicable is if the area in question is inaccessible to other owners and shifting control of the area would relieve the HOA of maintenance responsibility (4600(b)(3)(E)). If that exception applies, the board may, but is not required to, grant exclusive use rights. Any time exclusive use rights are granted, the HOA should make sure a written agreement is obtained with the owner, documenting that the area still is common area and requiring that the owner assume all maintenance and repair
responsibility for the area. Such an agreement can be prepared by the HOA’s attorney, and should be filed with the County Recorder to make sure future owners know of the agreement. p.s.: A board continuously in flux can create (or indicate) a problem. For some continuity, bylaws should prescribe twoyear terms, with staggered terms so that the entire board is not running each year. Thanks for your question, Kelly
By Janice Gough Divorce is an emotional blow, but with good financial advice, it doesn’t have to be a tax hit as well. 1. Tax filing status. Divorcing couples can file their taxes as married filing jointly, married filing singly or as single and/or head of household. If you’re married on Dec. 31, you’re married for that tax year. That’s a planning opportunity. At $450,000 a year, you’re in the highest tax bracket for a single person but not if you’re married. In this situation, being married is a tax benefit, so maybe we push the divorce into the following year. On the other hand, if you each make $250,000 a year, as single people you’re not in the highest bracket, but as married people you are. Probably better to get the divorce done this year. Married filing jointly is usually the right way to go, though married filing separately might make sense if one spouse has a lot of medical expenses, If there’s any question that the spouse is creating tax trouble, file separately. Clients who plan to reclaim the names that they had before marriage shouldn’t use that name on a tax return until they have filed the change with Social Security. 2. Dependency exemption. The custodial parent, or the parent with whom the child spends more nights, is usually the person who gets a dependent credit. But parents can trade the dependency credit if one makes too much or too little to benefit from the credit. You can still qualify as head of household if you’ve been living apart for more than six months and you provided
more than half the cost of a home for your child. Parents can also alternate who claims the child credit from year to year. 3. Sale of principal residence exclusion. For those filing singly, $250,000 of the gain on the principal residence is tax-free; the number is $500,000 for those married and filing jointly. Usually, it is better to have the larger exclusion. Either spouse can meet the ownership test. You must use the home as your principal residence for two of the last five years. 4. Mortgage interest deductions. Taxpayers are limited to deducting $1.1 million for acquisition and home equity indebtedness. Recently, a court allowed unmarried taxpayers who own a home together to each apply the $1.1 million limitation. 5. Deductions related to divorce. Legal fees for divorce aren’t deductible, nor are legal fees related to collecting child support. But clients can deduct fees related to collecting alimony, tax advice, and the management, conservation or maintenance of property that is held for producing income. 6. Allocation of tax carryovers. In general, the tax code treats marital and individual property differently. Charitable contribution carryovers are figured by the ratio of amounts that would have carried forward if the couple had filed separate returns in the year of contribution. Capital loss carryovers are based on the individual net losses that created the carryover. 7. Payments after divorce: child support, alimony and life insurance. Child support payments are neither tax deductible nor
taxable. Alimony payments are both tax deductible and taxable, and a recipient may need to pay estimated taxes on alimony. In order for alimony to be tax deductible, it must be required under the divorce or written separation agreement, paid in cash, end at the recipient’s death and not designated as anything other than alimony. Former spouses must live in different households. Excessively high or front-loaded payments in the first three years after the separation can be taxed. Life insurance policies are one way to ensure that alimony and child support will continue to be paid even if the payer dies. Premium payments may be deductible as alimony but not if the insured spouse retains policy ownership or the policy is inside an irrevocable life insurance trust. Support trusts in lieu of alimony are another way to ensure continuing payments. They offer less interaction between former spouses, can protect ownership of closely held family businesses and continue support even after the grantor dies. They are subject to the rules for trusts, not alimony, so there is no issue around front-loading. 8. Qualified retirement plans in divorce. A qualified domestic relations order can let divorcing spouses roll part of one spouse’s pension plan into an individual retirement account for the other with no tax on the rollover and the early distribution penalty waived. That doesn’t necessarily mean that a rollover is the right choice. A rollover offers distance from a former spouse, greater control over investments, more beneficiary designation options, the potential to deduct fees and
no mandatory withholding. Staying in the former spouse’s pension plan, on the other hand, can mean fund access for those younger than 59 1/2, possible protection from creditors, loans and/or hardship distributions, and an option to retain life insurance. You can leave some money in the ex’s plan and roll over some of it. There is no time limit on the rollover. IRA transfers are also not taxable, and they let the recipient name his or her own beneficiaries. It is crucial to make sure that one change beneficiary designations for retirement plans, insurance policies and trusts. They should also name new health care agents to make decisions in case they aren’t able to do so. I have yet to meet a client who says, ‘Yes, I still really love that person and want my ex to get everything. A former spouse can and will get the money if you don’t update beneficiaries. This is the diligence we need to provide as advisers to clients in divorce situations. those younger than 59 1/2, possible protection from creditors, loans and/or hardship distributions, and an option to retain life insurance. You can leave some money in the ex’s plan and roll over some of it. There is no time limit on the rollover. IRA transfers are also not taxable, and they let the recipient name his or her own beneficiaries.
to be used exclusively by many individual owners. If this is a question that you are able to answer I would appreciate it. Thanks, P. W., unincorporated S. Orange County

CA Children’s Health Insurance at Risk as Congress Fails to Fund It
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – It’s been almost a month since Congress let funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program run out - and now, the State of California says the program known as CHIP will go broke at the end of December. The California Department of Healthcare Services says this unprecedented situation will require some hard decisions in November. Tricia Brooks, a senior fellow at the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families, says Congress’ inaction has forced many states to consider freezing enrollment or cutting benefits. “States cannot wait until they run out of money to take action; in fact, doing so would be irresponsible,” she warns. “But making changes to CHIP coverage, even temporarily, takes time and
will further deplete the funds that states have to pay for healthcare for children.” Meanwhile, Brooks says lawmakers in D.C. have spent the past few months trying to repeal the ACA, pass a budget and work on tax reform. California’s CHIP program, which is part of Medicaid, has about 1.9 million children enrolled. The state is required by law to keep the program going, so some federal money would still flow. But the federal reimbursements would drop by 38 percent - leaving the state to try and absorb the rest. Kristen Golden Testa, California health director for the Children’s Partnership, says another program that covers 118,000 women and their newborns, is entirely dependent on federal money. So the state would either have to end it or cover the entire cost. “It’s a difficult situation
California has the largest number of kids enrolled in CHIP in the nation, at more than 1.9 million youngsters. (Children’s Action Alliance) because they have to balance the responsible program operators with not wanting to unnecessarily distress the families whose children depend on this coverage,” she says.
Two committees in Congress have already agreed on CHIP policy going forward, but they haven’t figured out how to pay the $8 billion to fund the program for the next
five years. Testa says the worry is that people will stop bringing their kids to the doctor, even while the insurance program remains intact.
Deadlines Approach for Affordable Care Enrollment
By Desert Star Staff New Mexico residents who get their health insurance as part of the Affordable Care Act or “Obamacare” might pay more attention to the deadlines approaching for 2018
enrollment - and less attention to rhetoric from politicians. Veronica Reyes, outreach manager for the state exchange program “Be Well NM,” says it’s business as usual - but people have only
six weeks to enroll starting next Wednesday, for healthinsurance coverage for 2018. With rising premiums and shifting subsidies, Reyes says they’ll need to be diligent and research all the options.
“There’s a lot of information happening at the national level - however, the law remains the same,” she explains. “The Affordable Care Act has not changed, so it is still required that people have health insurance.” Reyes says about 70 percent of New Mexicans are eligible for health-insurance subsidies to help them pay their premiums, based on income and family size. Open enrollment begins on November 1 and ends December 15. That sixweek window is only half of last year’s signup period. Information is online at bewell.com or by calling 1-833-862-3935. In New Mexico, 250,000 people are eligible for coverage through the state’s healthinsurance exchange. Now, about 46,000 use the program. Reyes says New Mexico has enrollment centers in Albuquerque, Gallup, Las
By Desert Star Staf COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The huge algal bloom in Lake Erie is receding, but clean water advocates say the annual problem won’t go away without changes in federal policies. One measure raising concerns is the ethanol mandate, which requires a certain amount of corn-based ethanol to be blended into gasoline. According to David DeGennaro, agricultural policy specialist with the National Wildlife Federation, it has led to an increase in corn production, which in turn increases water pollution as
farm nutrients, chemicals and soils run downstream and end up in Lake Erie. “It’s taken awhile for people to really realize what’s going on and just what the stakes have been,” DeGennaro said. “It’s not just this policy alone that’s contributing to all of these changes on the landscape and in water quality. But certainly, this is one factor, and it’s one that is government-driven through this mandate.” DeGennaro said farm runoff is the primary cause of toxic algae in Lake Erie, and noted excess fertilizer and manure are also to blame
for dead zones in the Gulf of Mexico and other water bodies across the country. It was just three years ago that a toxic algal bloom poisoned Toledo’s drinking water supply. Lake Erie Waterkeeper Executive Director Sandy Bihn said algal blooms are also harmful to the local economy. She said the sources need to be stopped to prevent further damage. “If we can solve the problem in Lake Erie, we can prevent it from happening in the other Great Lakes,” Bihn said. “If the toxics and the runoff
get in the system of those lakes, those lakes do not flush quickly, as Lake Erie does, and those problems will be far more long term and could potentially threaten the very viability of all the Great Lakes.” After initially saying the agency was considering lowering the mandate level, Environmental Protection Agency administrator Scott Pruitt reversed his position last week, announcing it would be kept in place and that he would consider allowing an increase of ethanol blended into the gas supply. But DeGennaro said
New Mexico’s 250,000 residents eligible for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act marketplace will most likely face rising premiums when enrollment for 2018 opens next Wednesday. (publichealthnm.org)
Cruces and Santa Fe, and there are certified agents and brokers in other communities across the state who can help with the enrollment process. “If people don’t have health insurance through their place of work or their significant other, a lot of times they don’t know where to go,” she says. “And we are the official marketplace on the website here for New Mexicans, where they can do price comparison; they can also access the subsidies that the government offers.” Also new this year, New Mexico insurance regulators have launched an online shopping tool to help people compare 2018 health-care plans. Created by the nonprofit group Consumers’ Checkbook, the website compares costs and benefits of plans both on and off the state exchange. On the website of the Office of New Mexico’s Superintendent of Insurance and click on ‘Health Plan Comparisons.’
he’s hopeful Congress will act on its own. “There’s interest with policy makers on Capitol Hill to change the policy,” he said. “And so we’re expecting to see some action this fall in the House Committee of jurisdiction and then also a bill introduced in the Senate.” The ethanol mandate was passed in 2005 as a way to cut energy imports, reduce pollution and lower fuel costs. Its opponents say the policy could be reformed to advance clean fuels and protect public health, without polluting water or destroying habitat.

Apple engineer reportedly fired after daughter’s vlog
By Desert Star Staf A Youtuber says her father was relieved of his position as an Apple engineer after she posted an unauthorized video of the new iPhone X online before the device’s official release. Brooke Amelia Peterson has issued a tearful Youtube video explaining how a “hands-on” look at the unreleased smartphone resulted in her father being let go from the tech giant. Peterson said she woke up last Tuesday to find that a video she published containing footage of the iPhone X went viral, leading her to appear on the Youtube trending page. In September, Peterson accompanied her father on a visit to the Apple Campus in Cupertino, California. She said it was here she made a YouTube video of
the smartphone, released to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the iPhone. “My dad was a privileged engineer who worked on the iPhone X and he had one after Apple [had] released their keynote, after plenty of Youtubers posted handson iPhone X videos,” she said. “My dad showed me his phone and I was filming it in the Apple cafeteria.” The engineer involved in the debacle was employed at Apple from August 2013. Peterson’s vlog features a short glimpse of the iPhone X camera. Peterson said she made the video as an “innocent” reminder of her family day out in California, as she had very few followers online. “It suddenly went viral and I have no idea how my video got so much attention considering how
many other iPhone X videos there are out there,” she said. Peterson added that despite removing the clip, as requested by Apple, the tech company fired her father.
“He takes full responsibility for letting me film his iPhone X… at the end of the day when you work for Apple it doesn’t matter how a good a person you
are, if you break a rule they just have no tolerance. The rules are in place for the happiness and for the safety of workers,” Peterson said.
Steve Jobs’ BMW Z8 sports car goes up for auction
By Desert Star Staf A luxurious, 400 horsepower BMW Z8 owned by late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs is headed to auction
next month at Sotheby’s in New York. The winning bid is estimated to reach between $300,000 and $400,000. Jobs’ ownership is
documented through several service invoices accompanying the car, as well as a copy of a California registration or socalled “pink slip” in his name
and at his personal residence, according to the listing. “According to legend, Jobs was convinced to buy the Z8 by Larry Ellison the iconoclastic CEO of Oracle, who enthused to Jobs that the car was a paragon of modern automotive engineering and ergonomics,” the listing says. The roadster has a production date of April 1, 2000, and it was delivered to him in October of that year, according to Sotheby’s. Jobs reportedly sold the car in 2003 to its current owner in Los Angeles. Over the course of the last seventeen years, the car has been driven just 15,200 miles from new, averaging less than 1,000 miles a year, the listing states. It is said to remain in “exemplary condition.”
By Desert Star Staf Elon Musk has revealed the first photo of the Boring Company’s tunnel beneath Los Angeles, as the billionaire industrialist continues his bid to develop a super-fast underground transit system in the city. The picture shows the prototype tunnel’s paneled walls, cables, and what appears to be a track running along the floor. The image also features a large upper conduit that snakes around the bend of a tunnel he believes will one day help alleviate urban traffic congestion. Writing on Twitter, Musk revealed the tunnel is now around 500ft (150 meters) long and said that he had hopes that it would span the length
of the north-south Interstate 405 highway by next year. “Should be 2 miles long in three or four months and hopefully stretch the whole 405 N-S corridor from LAX to the 101 in a year so,” he said. Musk had been digging under the SpaceX headquarters in California, but the LA tunnel is the first of the tech entrepreneur’s Boring Company civil pilot projects. The firm also recently received provisional approval to start digging in Maryland. It is hoped that the second test dig will one day form part of an underground Hyperloop network linking Baltimore with Washington DC and New York. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan tweeted his support for the project earlier this month.
In April, Musk released a video showing a multi-layered network of tunnels through which vehicles and pods could travel at speeds of up
to 700 kilometers per hour. Earlier this month, Richard Branson announced that his Virgin Group has bought an unspecified stake in Hyperloop
The silver-over-black car is equipped with several accessories, including its original BMW-branded Motorola flip phone that Jobs supposedly hated. The JOBS Z8 license plate was registered by the current owner. BMW built just over 5,700 Z8s between 1999 and 2003. The car had a suggested price of $128,000 before options in the United States, and used models typically sell for anywhere between $165,000 and over $200,000. The auction begins December 6 at Sotheby’s “Icons” event, featuring supercars from Lamborghini, Ferrari, Jaguar, and other marques. Source: BMWBLOG.com.

Participants Compete in Annual Tram Road Challenge
KMIR Tyler Harrison Palm Springs, CA -The ultimate test of endurance: The Palm Springs Aerial Tram Road Challenge. KMIR News is a proud sponsor of the event, benefiting United Way of the Desert. It is billed as ‘the world’s toughest 6K.’
It begins at the bottom of Tram Way and ends at the tram’s valley station. “It is a big hill, it is just a big hill,” said race winner, JJ Santana. Racers climbed 2,643 feet in elevation in just 3.7 miles all to end at the finish line.
Some needed an extra push to make it to the top. Others were spurred on by good-natured rivalry. “I sat down one time,” said 6-year-old Austin Redwine. “No, more than one you sat down two,” said his 7-yearold cousin, Izaaiah Reyes.
Palm Springs firefighters crossed the line in 45 pounds of gear. “This month is actually special for everybody because we promote breast cancer awareness,” said Firefighter Jeff Kelsheimer. Santana leading the men with a final time of 29 minutes and 24 seconds. Meantime, two newlyweds racing on their honeymoon. Marina Orrson leading the women with a 34 minute and 9 second final time. Both winners have the same plan. “Tomorrow, I have a 10K in LA,” said Santana. “We’re doing the Golden Gate half marathon next weekend, “ said Orrson. But at the end of the day it is just about making it through the Tram Road Challenge. “Just really excited to run up a mountain, it’s my first time,” said Reyes. Source: KMIR

Final Farewell to Firefighter Garrett Paiz KMIR Kitty Alvarado Indio, CA -It was a sendoff fit for a hero. Destiny Church in Indio was overflowing with family, friends, firefighters, dignitaries and the community to honor the life of a man who gave his life to save others: Firefighter Garrett Paiz. Garrett was a contract firefighter who comes from a long line of firefighters. Cal Fire Riverside made sure every detail was perfect, practicing for six hours the night before to make sure every second was on time and fit for a hometown hero, still the service ran late because so many showed up to pay their respects. The church had to have an overflow room. “When I was told the line was out the door and around the corner it brought me to tears,” says his sister Cinthia Paiz. Garrett was killed when his water tanker overturned on some of the steepest terrains in Napa. He was helping stop the Nun Fire from burning through the Robert Mondavi Winery. These have been the deadliest wildfires in California’s history. He was the only one who died running into danger. The only firefighter killed. Those who knew him best say that was exactly the kind of man Garrett was. “Garrett loved what he did matter of fact he would volunteer what most of us wouldn’t do when everybody is gathering their stuff and leaving the scene, here comes Garrett, going to the scene, he wasn’t just thinking about himself or his family, no he was thinking about, who can I rescue, who can I save,” said the family’s pastor Obed Martinez. a Cal Fire firefighter who was on the front lines of the same fire but was pulled off after Garrett’s accident says Garrett was the kind of person you wanted by your side, always hardworking, always cared, “I’m so proud of him, he worked hard for everything he had, I’m just so proud of him.” Congressman Raul Ruiz, (CA-36), a family friend, gave the family a flag flown in the nation’s capital in his honor, along with a certificate stating firefighter Garrett Paiz’s sacrifice will be written in our nation’s history. Garrett was a hero’s hero.
His crew from the volunteer fire department where he spent a lot of time helping his community in Noel Missouri, stood guard at his casket draped in a flag. “Most boys when we were growing up dreamed of being a cowboy, a truck driver or even a fireman, but out of all of us, Garrett did it better, better than anyone could have imagined, he lived out all three of his dreams, and gave his life doing what he loved to do, saving his fellow man a firefighter,” said his childhood friend, Mike Alford, a Navy veteran,
who eulogized him through tears adding, “the dictionary describes a hero as a person noted for courageous acts or nobility of character, I would say that would describe Garrett to a t, Garrett was a hero, he was my hero.” His sister Cinthia is proud of his life, service and sacrifice, “He’s a hero, let’s go lay him down to rest and let him be at peace.” The family has asked that in instead of flowers, donations be made to the volunteer fire department of Noel, Missouri. HOROSCOPES ARIES
As so many changes continue to occur, you become sensitized and aware of everyone’s behaviors, beliefs and responses in all interactions. You are also concerned with the right use of money & resources, your capacity to discern and discriminate and your ability to give (and give some more). Closeness is importance to you at this time. All that you value shifts to a higher intimate level.
TAURUS The ways we act and respond in relationships stem from childhood and family experiences and observations. Although you often hide yourself away from the world, you’re dedicated to loved ones. You would never think of leaving them. This dedication allows those close to you to grow, blossom, bloom, transform and evolve. Do you feel loved enough in return?
GEMINI No matter how compelling it is to return to a previous situation, you will not and cannot remain there. The purpose of the return is to review the lessons, realize the goodness, offer gratitude and forgiveness and then leave again. These liberate your future. The Nine Tests of Scorpio shadow you. You pass them. You cultivate

focused spiritual intention.
CANCER Are you feeling restricted by anyone or anything in your life? Is there a need for a rebalancing with friends or family? Are you concerned with choices, enough rest, future resources? Let’s discuss rest. You need rest in great amounts. A specific creativity is calling to you. Does it have to do with home, herbs, teas and gardens? Are you planting biodynamically?
LEO Remember when life was lived outside? When we picked fruit, gathered water at the well, and made fires to cook on? Remember long walks at daybreak and sunset as the moon and stars appeared? Remember the sense of community. There was also loneliness and separation and long snowy winters. As adults, we are able to release what’s sorrowful. Through loving forgiveness. Remember?
VIRGO You seek more freedom especially financial. This has been on your mind for a while now. One of the most important ways of receiving money is tithing to those in need. When we give things away we experience freedom. The heart opens. What we
give returns ten-fold. What you are really seeking is liberty. Create a freedom journal. Write what makes you free. Draw the Statue of Liberty.
LIBRA Your future is emerging in great transformative waves reorganizing your self-identity, how you see yourself, your professional and personal realities and interactions with the world. Listen carefully to all communication. They tell you what must be balanced to create a future filled with freedom. Begin with forgiveness. It heals you first.
SCORPIO Happy Birthday to all Scorpios. In coming months, there will be new discoveries, a new identity, and new learnings concerning how you see yourself. It begins with you creatively helping another. Helping others reconciles us to our own humanity. We see the needs of the times through the needs of others. Then we begin to help build the new world - the new sharing society. You are the resource behind this idea, which becomes an ideal within humanity.
SAGITTARIUS In Non-violent (compassionate) Communication classes we learn to compassionately understand the self and others’
needs. Being able to discern needs becomes a creative act, deeply internal, yet profoundly affecting all outer experiences and interactions. Cooperation (a virtue) begins in earnest. If you haven’t already, begin to learn Compassionate Communication techniques. Its effects are extraordinary.
CAPRICORN Profound changes continue, with self-identity and life direction. Group work is of great importance. In groups people see you as one who comes in to transform them. Some like this, some don’t. However, this is your task in groups. Understanding this helps you maintain focus and confidence. You manifest the group’s spiritual work. Before any work, call in the Soul of yourself and all others. The Soul protects and safeguards you.
PISCES With Neptune in Pisces, here is what it feels like. “Amidst the whirling forces we stood confused, swept up and down the lands, blinded, nowhere to rest.” Finally, we (Pisces) says, “Here I stand and will not move till I know the law governing this very moment. Facing many ways, I will determine for myself which way to go, traveling no longer up and down the land, no longer be blinded. I will only upward move. And then find rest.” (the Old Ancient Commentary for Pisces.) Risa D’Angeles is the founder and director of the Esoteric & Astrological Studies Research Institute: Risa’s Esoteric Astrology. She can be reached at risagoodwill@gmail.com.
AQUARIUS Your resources depend on your state of mind. It’s most important to downsize so you can move forward quickly when needed. Don’t let this be traumatic. Either keep what you have or give it away so you are less dependent on physical nonessentials and more focused upon freedom, which your future will call for. Balance is in having less. And then you can proceed onto a new adventure.
Stroke Survivor: Time is Of the Essence

American Stroke Association. This Sunday is World Stroke Day, to educate the public about what to do in a stroke emergency.
Someone has a stroke every two seconds, and one in six people will experience a stroke in his or her lifetime. Eric Sarno of Madison November 1, 2017
had his stroke 10 years ago. It was a long rehab for Eric, but he’s now recovered and is an active runner. He said everyone should know the signs of stroke. “All of a sudden. you have a really bad headache, or I can’t pronounce something, or my vision in one of my eyes is blurry, my left foot isn’t moving,” he said. “If it’s something strange, usually on one side of the body, that should be a sign that you really should be seeking help.” About one in four stroke survivors has a second stroke, but most second strokes are preventable with a healthy lifestyle and diet. The American Stroke Association tries to educate people about stroke by using the acronym “FAST”: face drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty, and time to call 911. The faster stroke victims are treated, the more likely their recovery. Sarno said the ongoing research into stroke is paying off. “There’s hope now that we know what kind of leads to stroke,” he said. “We know
that there’s better medications that can kind of reduce the risk. We also know that if someone does have a stroke, there are interventions that are possible nowadays that weren’t when I was younger.” Sarno said he was extremely fortunate in that he was in the hospital being treated for something else when his stroke occurred, so he got critical medical attention immediately. He said time is of the essence. “You want to be able to recognize the signs and symptoms so that you can get someone help immediately, and the faster you get help, the chances are surviving, and not only surviving but fully recovering, or getting pretty close to fully recovered.” In most cases, someone other than the stroke patient, such as a family member, makes the decision to get treatment. Sarno said that’s why it’s important that everyone knows the stroke warning signs. More information is online at strokeassociation.org.

One of the top grossing films this summer was “Spider-man : Homecoming.” It grossed $720+ million worldwide and now it‘s available to own on 4K Ultra HD /Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D and Blu-ray & DVD. Hey Mom and Dad, this is a perfect stocking stuffer or Hanukkah gift. Peter Parker, aka Spiderman, is played by Tom Holland. in “Captain America : Civil War” Peter finds it difficult to adjust to being an ordinary high school student who lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei). He still is the neighborhood hero, but he wants to solve bigger crimes like the Avengers do. Determined to show Stark how resourceful he is, Peter decides to bring down the menacing villain known as the Vulture (Michael Keaton, Oscar nominee for “Birdman”). And he is certain that he can do it all by himself. It turns out that the Vulture is one tough bird and our young hero soon finds himself in a dangerous web that could be fatal. “Spider-man : Homecoming” is based

By Jake Coyle NEW YORK - George Clooney’s “Suburbicon” notched one of the most dismal wide-release debuts in recent years on a sluggish pre-Halloween weekend where the horror sequel “Jigsaw” topped all releases despite an underperforming debut. The eighth “Saw” film landed at No. 1 with $16.3 million in North American ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday. That came in below industry expectations and suggested the revived “Saw” franchise isn’t connecting with audiences the way other recent horror entries have. In its first release since the Harvey Weinstein scandal began unfolding, the beleaguered Weinstein Co. feebly released a horror sequel of its own: “Amityville: The Awakening.” It played in an unusual Saturday-only engagement on just 10 screens, and grossed a mere $742. “Jigsaw” distributor Lionsgate also claimed the No. 2 spot with $10 million in the second week of release for “Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween.”
Made for about $10 million, “Jigsaw” comes seven years after the notoriously gruesome franchise - famously dubbed “torture porn” - bid adieu with “Saw 3D: The Final Chapter.” Critics weren’t happy to see its return, giving “Jigsaw” a 39 percent Rotten Tomatoes score. The Hollywood Reporter said the film “now feels like an outlier in a horror marketplace dominated by films that typically favor spooks over spurts.” Opening-weekend moviegoers also weren’t overwhelmed, giving the film a modest B CinemaScore. But that rating still easily surpassed the D-minus grade that greeted Clooney’s latest directorial effort. Despite debuting on more than 2,000 screens, “Suburbicon” managed just $2.8 million, making it one of Paramount Pictures’ worst performing wide-releases ever and marking a new box-office low for Clooney as a director and star Matt Damon. “Obviously we are disappointed in these results which we don’t feel are indicative of the quality and message of his original movie,”
said Kyle Davies, president of distribution for Paramount. “Suburbicon,” which debuted at the Venice Film Festival, was crafted as a fusion between an old Joel and Ethan Coen home-invasion comedy script and a more pointed satire of racism in a 1959 suburb. Critics didn’t respond well to the mix, either; its Rotten Tomatoes score is just 26 percent fresh. Paramount paid $10 million for domestic distribution rights for the Black Bear Pictures production, made for about $25 million. The studio has recently backed several divisive releases from respected filmmakers, including Darren Aronofsky’s “mother!” which also sputtered at the box office and garnered an even worse F CinemaScore. The Miles Teller PTSD drama “Thank You For Your Service,” directed by “American Sniper” writer Jason Hall, also opened weakly with $3.7 million in 2,054 theaters for DreamWorks and Universal. Business overall was slow ahead of Halloween. Weekend ticket sales totaled about $75 million, according to comScore, making it the second-lowest grossing frame of the year

“The Real Story: Scream” from the Smithsonian Channel presents the facts behind the fiction. The slasher horror film “Scream” reinvigorated the horror genre and launched a frightening film franchise. And while the gorefest may seem like Hollywood fiction, it was actually inspired by a reallife killing spree that sent an idyllic Florida town into a panic The video uncovers the true terrifying events behind the horror film as it investigates the parallels between the fictional serial killer and the real-life serial killer, The Gainesville Ripper. Also from the Smithsonian Channel is “The Real Story: Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” The movie was an instant smash when it hit theaters in 1977 and reawakened man’s eternal question: Are we alone in the universe? Though a work of fantasy, few realise that Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi classic was inspired by actual witness testimony, as well as a series of UFO sightings in Michigan in the summer of 1966. The documentary separates science fact from science fiction as it re-examines government documents and puts old witness testimonies to the test using modern technology.

The Disney release grossed $107.6 million internationally from about 52 percent of the marketplace. The “Thor” sequel opens in North America, China and elsewhere on Friday. Yet a release in China couldn’t rescue the box-office disappointment “Blade Runner 2049.” Denis Villeneuve’s film, starring Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, added $16.6 million overseas this weekend, including its China debut. The film, distributed by Warner Bros. in North America and Sony internationally, has earned $223.4 million globally in three weeks of release. Palm Canyon Theatre Stages a Glittering Disco Beat Musical By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic The Palm Canyon Theatre of Palm Springs hit a home Friday, October 27th, on opening night, with a glittering, kaleidoscopic stage full of twenty-five actors, dancers, and singers plus eye-popping costumes, and special effects with their current musical production “Priscilla Queen of the Desert”, (the musical). Musicals are the specialty of the Palm Canyon Theatre (PCT) where they are sensationally produced and performed. PCT is now in its twenty-first year of providing quality entertainment to the Coachella Valley, presenting thirteen productions a year that include comedies, dramas, and special events as well as their signature musicals. “Priscilla Queen of the Desert” (the musical), has a libretto written by Australian film director Stephan Elliott and writer Allan Scott. The music and lyrics for this stage show are based on the 1994 Australian movie of the same name by Elliott and Scott. When “Priscilla” became a stage musical in 2006, original writers Elliott and Scott teamed up again and are credited with the libretto, but the music and lyrics sung by the twentyfive cast members are the courtesy of various pop song composers and lyricists. The sparkling production at PCT is directed by Scott Smith. The libretto centers around two ‘drag queens’ (the talented actor/choreographer Anthony Nannini) as Adan Whitely, and (Nicholas Sloan) as Tick Belrose, and Bernadette Bassenger, their transgender woman friend played by (Ron Coronado) decide to take their ‘drag show act’ on the road to help out their friend Tick Belrose, who is seeking to reunite with his estranged
son. It’s a heart-warming, uplifting road trip adventure into Australia’s Outback country in search for love and friendship, where all end up finding more than they ever could dream of. Tick has separated from his wife Marion (Chandra Smith) and has not seen his 12-yearold son Benji (nicely played by (Ben Van Dijk) in eight years. Road trip adventures be they movies or stage musicals are always entertaining and are filled with twist and turns of the core story. “Priscilla”, is a search for understanding. For redemption, where families and friends come together to celebrate life in all its human dimensions. PCT’s lavish production of “Priscilla” is an early Christmas gift for those who enjoy colorful, toe-tapping, eye appealing, theatrical entertainment fueled by an off-stage, driving Discobeat orchestra, led Piano/ Musical Director Steven Smith, and his talented, four-man orchestra of Dave Bronson on Guitar, Larry Holloway on Bass, John Pagels, on Drums, and Bob Scarano on Guitar who deliver the pulsating rhythmic sounds, that put the audience in the mood right from the get-go. The production features twenty-two songs and surprises that are cleverly folded into the musical numbers by director Scott Smith. The cast has lots of fun performing these moments. My favorite moment comes with the “MacArthur Park” number. It’s always difficult to list all of the names of large cast productions. “Priscilla Queen of the Desert” has twentyfive members that make up this excellent ensemble cast, however, there always standouts in every show and they include: choreographer/ actor/dancer Anthony Nannini who, once again, sets his professional, musical talent- bar very high indeed; Ron Coronado, Nicholas Sloan, Larry Martin as Miss
Bernadette & Tick in Priscilla. Photo by Paul Hayashi Understanding, the Divas: Allegra Angelo, Sarah HagarCox, Amber Mora, young Ben Van Dyjk, and Luke Rainey as Bob. All offer solid support. In the technical credits department led by director Smith, “Priscilla”, features a huge functional set designed by resident design wizard J.W. Layne that allows the 25 member cast to quickly and smoothly make their entrances and exits. And features the bus that plays a major role in the musical.
The Lighting design by J.W. Layne and Kay Van Zandt floods the stage with their clever designs in order to let the audience see and appreciate the more than 40 + amazing and colorful costume designs by Resident Designer Derik Shopinski and his army of assistants. Shopinski, is also in charge of the wig designs as well (where does he get all that energy?). The Props are the province of Gaige Griffin and staff, and this list completes the creative
team. It takes a lot of creative artists to mount a production of this size. But the payoff is definitely worth the effort. The production “Priscilla Queen of the Desert (the musical) is being performed at the Palm Canyon Theatre, in Palm Springs and has already been extended one week and will now end its popular run on November 19, 2017. US nuclear-capable B-2 stealth bomber flies mission to Pacific
B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber © Lance Cheung / Reuters By Desert Star Staff An American nuclearcapable B-2 stealth bomber has conducted a long-range mission over the Pacific to demonstrate Washington’s “visible commitment” to its Asian allies amid North Korean anxieties and ahead of Donald Trump’s visit to the region. Just as US Defense Secretary was wrapping up his
visit to South Korea Saturday, the US dispatched its state of the art B-2 stealth bomber to fly a long-range mission to the Pacific area of operations. The bomber which flew out of Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri practiced maneuvers to “familiarize aircrew with air bases and operations in different geographic combatant commands,” the
US Strategic Command said in a statement. CENTCOM, however, failed to detail the flight path of the B-2 bomber. Washington only said the practice run would enable the B-2 crew “to maintain a high state of readiness and proficiency” and that such missions “validate our alwaysready global strike capability and are a visible demonstration

of commitment to our allies and enhancing regional security.” Headquartered in Hawaii, United States Pacific Command (USPACOM) is responsible for the Indo-AsiaPacific region, an area which encompasses more than 100 million square miles, or over half of the Earth’s surface. It is the largest command of the US forces – with roughly 375,000 military and civilian personnel and 1,100 aircraft at its disposal. USPACOMalso directs the operations of the US Pacific Fleet that incorporates around 200 ships split between five aircraft carrier strike groups, enlisting 130,000 sailors and civilians. The B-2 mission is a prelude to Trump’s Asia tour, scheduled to begin in Japan on November 5. Prior to Trump’s trip, US Defense Secretary James Mattis laid the groundwork for discussions. Speaking after talks with his South Korean counterpart Song Young-moo in Seoul, Mattis made clear that Washington will never accept
North Korea as a nuclear state. The US defense chief also said that Pyongyang’s ambitions to acquire enhanced ballistic and atomic capabilities will weaken security in the region. “North Korea has accelerated the threat that it poses to its neighbors and the world through its illegal and unnecessary missile and nuclear weapons programs. I cannot imagine a condition under which the United States would accept North Korea as a nuclear power,” he said. Any attack on the US and its allies by North Korea will be defeated by a “massive military response” by the United States and its allies, Mattis affirmed. For now, though, the US is seeking a diplomatic solution to the crisis, Mattis added. Tension between North Korea and the United States has been steadily building after a series of nuclear and missile tests by Pyongyang and warmongering exchanges between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Purple Room in Palm Springs was the host of a concert by Iris Williams who has performed for American Presidents and Britain’s Royalty. She performed as a benefit concert for the new Love & Love Tennis Foundation. She gave a cabaret-style concert for the sold-out dinner and concert. Williams was even awarded the Order of the British Empire for her contributions to the arts. She performed with many legends like Bob Hope, Tony Bennett and others. Bob Hope introduced her to President Ford and she performed at many benefit functions for him. She had the audience in the palm of her hand after the first song. She would quip with the guests in between songs. She said a lot of her audiences love to hear her sing in French. She sang 4 songs in French and everyone went, ahhhh, when she sang La Viene Rose. French language really compliments her voice. The audience was all quiet when she sang soft traditional music. She had the guests clapping and waving to a few of her up tempo songs. Williams thanked the audience for coming and supporting this wonderful idea of giving tennis lessons November 1, 2017

Workshops to Aid in Preventing Teen Suicide
Depression, anxiety and self-harm can be early warning signs of a teen at risk of suicide. (TaniaVdB/Pixabay)
Wheeler, director of the Chase Home for Children, it’s important to be aware of early warnings that young people are at risk. “Hurting themselves, for instance, cutting,” she says. “Often, they’ll talk about hurting themselves, killing themselves, wanting to die. Signs of depression, signs of anxiety.” The first workshop is coming up on November 3 in Kensington and is presented by HAVEN, a nonprofit dedicated to violence prevention and family well-being. That day-long workshop is geared toward mental health practitioners, counselors and others who work with youth. Wheeler says it will focus on the relationship between trauma and suicide risk. “Most of the youth that we work with at the Chase
Home has suffered some sort of trauma and there really is a direct link between trauma and suicide,” she explains. Workshop participants will learn practical skills for identifying and responding to warning signs of suicide. A second workshop takes place November 17 at the Community Campus in Portsmouth. Wheeler says that workshop will provide further training to staff, and is also open to community partners, including police departments. “We all really need to be hand in hand, making sure we’re doing the best possible support for these kids to prevent suicide,” she adds. The training is being conducted by the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

By Desert Star Staff WILMINGTON, N.C. – The opioid crisis plaguing states such as North Carolina is officially declared a public health emergency. That announcement on Thursday by President Donald Trump confirms what many have already known about the country’s issues with drug addiction. Supporters hope the announcement clears the way for swift action and funding to help states. Jessica Nickel, president, and CEO of the Addiction Policy Forum, was in Washington for the administration’s announcement. “This is a full-blown crisis,” she says. “We’re losing 144 people a day to drug overdoses. That’s like a plane crash every single day in America for an entire year. Or, put another way, it’s like losing a sold-out Yankee Stadium all in one second.”
One hitch in the efforts to expand addiction assistance is that there’s currently no funding available to support a public health emergency in the federal budget, and Congress must take action to make that money available. If it had been declared a public emergency, as Trump hinted he would do in August, Federal Emergency Management funds would be immediately available. More than 1,200 people died from drug overdoses in North Carolina in 2015. Wilmington, Hickory, Jacksonville and Fayetteville are listed as four of the worst cities for opioid abuse nationwide. While the Trump administration indicates a desire for quick action in the opioid crisis, efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act could make it difficult for some addicts to access proper care. Nickel says it’s something the Addiction Policy Forum is watching.
“The ACA has begun to integrate the treatment of substance-abuse disorders into health care, so we are paying close attention to make sure that any changes to our healthcare system do not negatively impact our families and
patients that need treatment for addiction,” she notes. On Thursday, Nickel’s organization released a fouryear plan to address addiction in America. Developed by experts, she says it recommends helping families

nation’s opioid epidemic. Jessica Nickel, president, and CEO of the Addiction Policy Forum, says the declaration is an important step that gives flexibility to states such as Iowa to get resources to the
most-impacted communities. “And it also makes room for some policy changes and some regulations that can be changed to clear the pathway to make sure that we’re getting access to treatment and recovery support to our families immediately to both prevent and treat addiction across the country,” she explains. Iowa’s opioid problem pales in comparison with that of many other states. About 70 Iowans died of overdoses last year, but those numbers still represent a doubling of the overdose death rate in 2005. In September, Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller joined with 41 other state
attorneys general to demand documents from manufacturers and distributors of painkillers in an effort to examine their role in creating the epidemic. Earlier this month, Deborah Thompson, a legislative liaison for the Iowa Department of Public Health, gave dramatic public testimony that her husband had died of a drug overdose that was precipitated by an addiction to pain pills following a serious car crash. Nickel says the severity of the problem can’t be overstated. “This is a full-blown crisis,” she says. “We’re losing 144 people a day to drug overdoses. That’s like a plane crash every single day in

Public Comment Period Closes for Clean Water Rule
By Desert Star Staff HELENA, Mont. - The public has one final day to submit comments on the 2015 Clean Water Rule, which clarifies where the Clean Water Act applies. The rule is a safeguard put in place during the Obama administration to protect the country’s rivers, streams and drinking-water supplies. However, current Environmental Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt has said the rule has to go to remove onerous regulations on businesses and farms. Dave Chadwick, executive director of the Montana Wildlife Federation, said the rule took years to develop through many public meetings and a lot of scientific data. “It’s all been thrown out in a couple of months by an oil-and-gas industry lawyer from Oklahoma,” he said. “We really need to have some perspective here about whose interest is the director of the EPA looking after here? And

it’s increasingly clear that he’s not looking after the interests of the American people, fish, wildlife and all the other values that depend on clean water.” The Clean Water Rule protects the headwater, rainfed, and seasonal streams of drinking water sources for 117 million, or about one in three Americans, according to the EPA. Chadwick said it also protects the Montana waters where folks enjoy world-class fishing. People can go online to regulations. gov to comment on the rule. David Brooks, executive director of Montana Trout Unlimited, said he is concerned that repealing the rule already was a foregone conclusion. He said Pruitt put out a video with the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, steering people’s comments on the rule. “Rather than direct the public to the EPA’s website and docket to comment,” Brooks said, “that video directs people to the National
Advocates for the Clean Water Rule worry that its repeal could endanger fishing in Montana. (Bob Wick/BLM) Cattlemen’s Beef Association website, where they have a pre-written comment to be submitted that opposes the Clean Water Rule.” Repealing the rule is the first in a two-step process. Chadwick said the EPA November 1, 2017
will have to submit a new rule for public comment, leaving protections for clean water in limbo. “Not only is that going to mean major chaos for regulated industries, obviously major chaos for
fish, wildlife, everything we value, but it’s also going to take time to develop that new definition,” he said. “So, in the meantime, our water quality is going to be at risk.”

Kennedy assassination files, but clarified that documentation of the names and addresses of people still living will not be made public. Thousands of previously unseen documents regarding the death of President Kennedy – who was shot dead while visiting Dallas, Texas in 1963 – were released last week. The documents were released online under the 1992 John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act, which determined that the US National Archives should publish the withheld assassination information
within a 25-year timeframe. But some records remain securely locked away over fears they could threaten national security. After consulting US intelligence, Trump said Saturday that he is ready to see “all”the JFK archive files put out in the public domain. However, he said he would not release the names of people still living who are mentioned in the documents. On Thursday, the White House issued a statement saying some documents not published in this round of releases will be disclosed by April 26, 2018. It said redactions will only occur in the “rarest of circumstances.” Meanwhile, WikiLeaks challenged Trump’s assertion

and not getting heavy dramatic roles. The agencies were very helpful, almost overwhelmingly so as there was a period of months where I was Skyping or meeting with another young actress each day. I met with so many incredible young women, but I hadn’t found exactly what I was looking for. It was a Wednesday and I had already talked to six girls that week and was not in the mood for one more audition. I had watched a little bit of Margaret’s reel on “Leftovers,” which was good and it was clear that she was very talented. But that character was very angsty and kind of like sarcastic, angry teen and as far away from the character of Sister Cathleen that I was looking for. That character is completely un-ironic, has no sarcasm, is pure, and is totally idealistic. So I didn’t want to do this Skype with Margaret, but felt it was unprofessional to cancel. We got on Skype together and it was like oh my God this is the girl.
identify one particular quality that made her stand out. But, she knocked me over and I knew she was who I was looking for. When I got off the phone, I started pacing down streets in New York. I couldn’t believe she had dark hair because I always pictured the character as blonde. Not that I have any preference between blond or brunettes but I had spent years and years with this image of this character in my head and I thought, “Ain’t that something;” she has dark hair. When I was done pacing the streets for a half hour, I then called my casting directors and told them I found the girl.
After all those years of Sister Cathleen being devoted to Catholicism and determined to become a nun, beginning as a young child, why did you choose that ending? Betts: In the script, it was resolved and you knew what happened to her. It was Margaret’s idea to push for that ending in the film and she was 100% right.
Up Close & Personal with “Novitiate” Writer/Director Maggie Betts love young girl and everything revolved around him. This guy had to fill all of that for me. After the relationship was over, in looking back years later, I realized the guy had none of the qualities I projected onto him. He was actually a loser but was like God to me because I put everything into him and it was literal. How long did it take you to write the script? Betts: Writing the script did not take long. The first draft, which is always total crap, was not good. But it had pages 1 to 50 and it took about four to six months, but the research took five to six years. I wrote a 40page research document for myself that had everything that was interesting to me. By the time I got to writing the script, I knew there would be certain scenes including the wedding scene. I knew exactly what was going to happen in that scene. I knew it was to start with Cathleen as a young child in school, so I followed that arc. Ultimately, it wasn’t hard to write the script because I saturated myself with the research. Did you have an easy time getting financing for the film? Betts: No. Not an
Did you get any opposition or assistance from the Church and you did have any advisers on set? Betts: We didn’t get any resistance from the Church, but we did have a priest and a former nun on set that served as tech advisers. How did you find the very talented Margaret Qualley to play the central role of Sister Cathleen? Betts: It was like finding a needle in a haystack. I had contacted different agencies and told them we were looking to cast a new face – someone who is comparatively unknown and somebody who has to possess special qualities because the role is that of a nun in the 1960s. The agencies were very excited about the project and did everything to facilitate us finding that individual. But, a lot of girls in the character’s age group were in their teens
What did you see that set her apart from all the other actresses? Betts: People have asked me that question many times. Margaret is incredibly beautiful. Margaret is incredibly intelligent. Margaret has a natural magnetism that will even jump through a Skype screen. That said, I can’t
That haunting love scene between the two novices clearly depicted Sister Cathleen’s need to be touched which overrode momentarily her devotion to God/husband. Was that one of the most intense scenes for you? Qualley: The scene where the young novitiates confess their flaws was actually more intense because we shot for three days on our knees and listened to confessions. The whipping scene was also intense. Over my director’s objections, I used a real whip because I wanted to experience what it felt like. My back was covered with welts and bruises.
What would you like the audience to take away from this film? Qualley: There are a lot of things you can take away from the film. One of the things that hit home for me is the overwhelming desire to be perfect. All these young girls are trying desperately to be perfect and are very hard on themselves. I’m not religious at all, but one of the things that was exciting about this film was to have a love story with Jesus, which sounds insane. I think it’s a testament to how much you can project onto somebody and how much we live in our imaginations and then at a certain point, that is not enough. Well done. I wish you a strong box office success. Betts & Qualley: Thank you.

Southern Ocean Body Rejects New Protections
By Desert Star Staff HOBART, Australia, In mixed news for ocean conservation advocates, the body that governs all activity in the Southern Ocean around Antarcticaconcluded its 36th annual meeting today without creating a marine protected area (MPA) in East Antarctica. But the scientific body within the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) did endorse a plan to monitor the world’s largest MPA, in the Ross Sea, which it created last year. The Pew Charitable Trusts is disappointed in CCAMLR’s lack of progress on designating another marine protected area, particularly as it leaves penguins and other vulnerable Antarctic species unprotected for another year. For the sixth consecutive time, CCAMLR delegates failed to reach consensus on a proposal to create the East Antarcticaprotected area, losing the momentum from last year, when CCAMLR designated the 2.06 million-square-kilometer Ross Sea MPA. However, the commission considered a new proposal for a reserve in the waters around the Antarctic Peninsula and is working to refine the details of a potential protected area in the Weddell Sea. Pew expects that CCAMLR will approve both proposals in coming years. On the other hand, CCAMLR’s scientific body

endorsed a research and monitoring plan for the Ross Sea Region MPA (RSRMPA). The MPA will enter into force Dec. 1, and the monitoring plan will help determine the effectiveness of the protected area over the next 35 years by showing if the health of the region’s ecosystem is improving. The scientists helping to implement the plan will also study how ocean warming is affecting the ecosystem, and possibly make important discoveries on individual species, such as the Antarctic toothfish, a top predator in the region and a fish with a complex life cycle that scientists don’t yet fully understand. Andrea Kavanagh, director of Antarctic and Southern Ocean work at The Pew
Charitable Trusts, issued the following statement: “This year, the scientific committee took an important next step—after last year’s designation of the Ross Sea Region MPA—by developing a research and monitoring plan (RMP) that will be a living document to be refined throughout the duration of the MPA. The RMP will help extend the benefits of the Ross Sea protected area beyond the MPA boundaries and sets high standards for MPA designations around the world. “Among the most important aspects of the RMP will be the collection of baseline data on the Ross Sea ecosystem. This could not only help advance scientific understanding of these waters but also serve as an MPA monitoring blueprint
for other fishery management bodies around the world. “But after last year’s historic designation of the Ross Sea Region MPA, it is disappointing that CCAMLR could not agree to protect more of the vast and biologically diverse Southern Ocean. For the past six years, the commission has failed to reach consensus on East Antarctic protections. If CCAMLR is serious about its commitment to establish a Southern Ocean network of MPAs, it must continue moving forward in the coming years by agreeing to further protections, including in the Weddell Sea and Antarctic Peninsula, or risk jeopardizing the health of the region’s intact ecosystems.” Source: Prnewswire

MI Water Rights Groups Join Nestlé Boycott
By Desert Star Staff FLINT, Mich. – Michiganders have spoken out with petitions and emails about bottled water giant Nestlé’s plan to more than double the amount of water it pumps out of northern Michigan, and activists say now, it’s time to fight back with purchasing power. Michigan Citizens for Water Conservation has joined a larger movement to boycott Nestlé products.

The group’s president, Peggy Case, says the company’s legal battle with Osceola Township over denial of a zoning permit was the last straw. She says Nestlé’s actions have saddled the tiny community with legal fees and are part of a much bigger problem – the privatization of water. “It’s a fallacy that bottled water is safer and better water,” she states. “It’s a
small Ontario town for a well that had been intended as water for local residents. Nestlé insists its plan is simply a response to consumer demand. While the DEQ says it is looking into concerns that the proposal would harm local wetlands, Case says damage being done by the current pumping rate is already visible. “These used to be cold water trout streams, they’re not cold water anymore,” she explains. “You can’t find the trout. There’s places where streams have changed their course, there’s alien grasses growing there, there’s changes in the patterns of the currents. And the headwaters of both marketing ploy that has been of these creeks are dry.” used very effectively to build Case adds that her group up a huge market for bottled does believe there is a place water in places where it’s completely unnecessary.” for bulk water, noting the The Michigan Department important role it has played of Environmental Quality (DEQ) in the Flint water crisis. as the master of the short form - which culminated in a full-length play “All in the Timing”, and was the most produced play in America (after Shakespeare) in 1996. Actors love his work because he writes about subjects and themes that allow them to stretch beyond their traditional creative boundaries. Fellow playwrights Christopher Durang (comedy) and Sam Shepard (drama) also fall into this category. They’re quirky and brilliant as well. Ives’ play dialogue incorporates a lot of street vernacular, which at times, can be jolting but he never talks down to his audience. For my money “Venus in Fur” is his best short piece to date, and it’s a timeless play that never goes out of style or loses its relevance. It’s an actor’s play. Written for them and appreciated by them. In this CV REP production, the audience is treated to two intelligent, high-octane, energetic performances. This is my third “Venus in Fur” production that I’ve seen. I reviewed the original Broadway show in New York in 2011, starring Nina Arianda and Hugh Dancy, with Arianda winning the Best Actress Tony. San Diego Rep Company then produced an excellent production in 2013, with Caroline Kinsolving and Thomas Meeks as a formidable pair of dramatic performers. Comparisons are odious at best, but I wouldn’t exchange this talented pair for any who have performed the play. Angela Sauer as Vanda and Patrick Zeller as Thomas, simply put area: sublime. The play is a play within a play that is set in an audition studio in the Lower Eastside of New York City in the present. Thomas (Patrick Zeller) an intelligent, intense, erudite,
young playwright is getting ready to close the auditions he has been conducting all day in search of a perfect leading lady for his upcoming play that he has adapted from an obscure novel by a 19th-century author. When the play begins Thomas is on his cell phone speaking to his wife, when Vanda, a ‘theatrical force of nature’ in the form of a very-late-for-her-auditionappointment actor, breezes into the room and immediately begins to audition for Thomas. With the apologies and pleading by all; Vanda being late, and Thomas having closed the auditions for the night, Vanda says” … as long as I’m here can’t you just conduct a short audition?” That pleading ‘fatal line’ being crossed by one making a power bid, and the other acquiescing, sets in motion a fascinating story of the feminine mystique vs. the dominating male ego. The following 95 minutes become a delicious, sexy, sizzling, verbal dance of mutual seduction that keeps the audience riveted to the onstage action and the emotions between Vanda and Thomas; two formidable individuals that are superbly played Angela Sauer and Patrick Zeller. Ms. Sauer attacks the role of Vanda in a bravura performance of an actor who knows all of the tricks of the acting trade. She uses them as weapons trained on the ego of playwright Thomas who now warms to the idea suggested by Vanda of him playing the part of the playwright-director during the audition. At Vanda’s urging, Thomas is now intrigued by her suggestion that he direct his own provocative and potent play. Aaah, the lure, and the temptation prove too irresistible and Thomas willingly and eagerly succumbs; accepting the challenge of Vanda’s rules of engagement for the audition, as well as her
Photo by Jim Cox pitch to just cast her now. The on-stage chemistry between Ms. Sauer and Mr. Zeller is literally palpable. Their performances fully engage the audience who become fascinated by the push and pull of playwright Ives’ characters. References to the origin of the title “Venus in Fur” also enliven the audiences’ fascination with the story. But no more spoiler alerts. One must come and see this potent production for oneself. As wonderful and mesmerizing as Sauer and Keller are, they don’t do it all by themselves. The safe harbor
created by director Celona plays a key role in the overall success of this production. Celona’s seamless direction encourages the actors to stretch their creative muscles which then takes the audience along on this intriguing and highly entertaining journey of skirting around the kinky edges of bondage and domination. The creative team led by director Celona includes the always inventive set designs of Emmy winning scenic designer Jimmy Cuomo and the awardwinning lighting designs of Moira Wilkie Whitaker. The Costume designs of Julie
Onken fit perfectly for the whirling dervish-like Ms. Sauer. Sound Designer Randy Hansen creates soundtracks that not only require precision but also a sensitive touch from technical board operator Karen Goodwin, while Wigs, Hair, and Makeup designs by Desert Theatre League (DTL) multi-awardwinner Lynda Shaeps are spoton for Ms. Sauer and Mr.Zeller. This splendid production performs at the CV REP Theatre in Rancho Mirage, CA through November 19, 2017, and runs 95 minutes without an intermission. Don’t Miss It!
