Bill O’Reilly at the MacCallum Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Desert Town Hall presented by the H.N. Frances C. Berger Foundation brought one of the most renown newscasters and authors, Bill O’Reilly, to the McCallum Theater on November 15. Tickets sold out almost immediately as many wanted to see him and hear him speak. He is wellloved by his fans. O’Reilly gave one of his limited appearances to talk about his new book, The United States of Trump, How the President sees America and his understanding of President Trump. This was a special event for Desert Town Hall. O’Reilly took to the stage just standing and talking. He was so relaxed and comfortable on stage. Bill spoke about President Trump as he knew him with some of his insights into his personality and Presidency. He had the audience laughing

many times when he gave out a small anecdote on the life of President Trump. One statement was that President Trump drinks anywhere from 13 to 18 cans of Diet Coke a day. Another time he said that President Trump did not read his book as he does not read books but takes in everything said. All brought laughter when these small pieces of information about our President were funny. Other times this information brought clapping and cheers. In the first part of the program, he spoke alone on the stage. Occasionally someone would comment on the front rows, and he would answer. The second half came after a short intermission where they brought out chairs for Mr. O’Reilly and Board of Directors for Desert Forum, Inc. President Keith Goff. The Desert Forum, Inc is a nonprofit organization that produces the acclaimed

Speaker Series. This was the Q&A session of the second half of the program. Audience members wrote on cards the questions they wanted to be answered. O’Reilly was very candid with these remarks. One looming question was about the impeachment hearings. O’Reilly said he thought it would end soon and be forgotten in a short while, 2 or 3 months. This Desert Town Hall event was so popular that were was no seats available. I heard they probably could have sold enough tickets to fill the McCallum again. Desert Town Hall is so well respected by all Desert residents as tickets to the speakers series sells out each year. The speakers range on many topics from politics and Bill O’Reilly. Photo by Pat Krause more. This year’s speakers include Trey Gowdy on January 20, Bob Costas on on April 9. Desert Town Hall speaker before the one for the February 23, Jon Meacham also holds a session for our audience at The Renaissance on March 23, and Paul Nicklen teenage students with each Esmeralda in Indian Wells.

stories so you can visualize what he is saying. He walks across the stage and stops now and then to make certain moves or imitated walks that embellish his stories. Jordan tells of his childhood and career, his family, and the hilarious parts of his life. He speaks of his flamboyant boyhood, which was raised by a southern baptist mother. He tells about his life and how it was like to be gay in that environment. He said about his youth when he didn’t know people drank liquor and other things worldly that he was not aware of until his teens. He said he wrote a play about his life and how his mother was the main character in his play. It was not a flattering portrayal of his mother, who was known to have a few problems of her own. His play was going to go on Broadway when his mother said she was coming to see the play. WOW. The laughter was infectious at this point.

Volunteers, Jeff Hocker, Simon Sarkisian, Curtis Fox, Syble Secor, Steve Kluth, and Jim McBride. Photo by Pat Krause Another hilarious story was about his incarceration for drinking, which had the whole theater laughing. He said it was nice to come back to this theatre where a lot of his career began when he was in the cult film, sordid Lives, and continued more after

that film. He has become the most wanted personality in movies and movies. He has garnered an Emmy and other awards in his career; His many talents include author, Equal Rights activist, fundraiser, Spokesperson, voice-over artist plus actor and comedian

Fair Housing Regulations Are Here, and a New Protected Class

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL After five years of work and hearings, the California Fair Employment and Housing Council has completed what appear to be the first state Fair Housing regulations in the country. While in the short space of this column a thorough summary of the regulations is impossible, here are some highlights for associations and their managers to consider. HOAs are “Housing Providers” under the regulations, as are HOA boards and their managers.

Managers can also be subject to enforcement or civil liability if they discriminate or fail to respond appropriately to discrimination. The regulations do not cover all fair housing issues but provide helpful guidance regarding the housing provider’s obligation to make reasonable accommodations upon request of the disabled. The regulations describe how disabilities are documented and who can attest to the need for an accommodation. One such reasonable accommodation is allowing assistance animals. Under the regulations, a mere internet certificate or labeled vest is not acceptable to document the animal as an accommodation – a person attesting to a disability must be familiar with the resident’s needs. The regulations do not permit species or breed limitation for assistive animals. The test of “reasonableness” is whether the animal causes damage or danger to persons or property, and the mere fear or suspicion of problems is insufficient reason to deny the animal. A person needing an assistance animal cannot be required to obtain extra insurance or pay a fee or deposit for the assistance animal. The regulations also ban harassment based upon membership in a protected class, meaning a resident may not be harassed because of their race, gender, religion, familial status, sexual orientation, or any of the

other protected classes. If claimed harassment occurs, the HOA will be required to investigate the allegation and try to determine what happened. If the HOA has any power to stop or sanction the harassment, it is required to do so. Many associations do not have rules banning discriminatory harassment and may only be able to urge the offending resident to stop the conduct. One controversy in the HOA legal community regards whether HOAs should adopt rules against illegal harassment. Some lawyers urge that such rules should be adopted, but others (including this writer) argue that HOAs are not equipped to adjudicate harassment complaints between residents, and that such rules would add to the already difficult task of HOA

management and governance. Another important aspect of the regulations is the emphasis upon “interactive process,” as the HOA must dialogue with the resident seeking an accommodation. The interaction may result in a collaborative resolution meeting the resident’s needs. The HOA response to the request and dialogue with the resident may be scrutinized later if there is a complaint lodged against the HOA. Confidentiality is another key new aspect of the regulations. The HOA must keep the resident’s disability and accommodation confidential. If the resident wishes to disclose that they have a disability requiring an accommodation, that is their decision and not the HOA’s. Senate Bill 222 was

approved, adding veteran or military status as a class of persons protected from housing discrimination. This new protection also means that the CC&R cover sheets required by Government Code 12956.1 must also mention this new protected class. For more information, visit www.dfeh.ca.gov. Kelly G. Is Purchasing an Annuity right for you-Four Scenarios to Help

By Janice Gough When, and in what planning situations, does an annuity make good sense? Fixed Index Annuities offer many solutions for our retirement years, by offering Long Term Care riders, Critical Illness riders, Disability riders, and Guaranteed Lifetime Income Rider. Here are 4 Solutions to help determine which is right for you. 1. Where the Goal Is Immediate Income Many people who want the certainty of income or a portion of their income will select this annuity. When immediate income is the primary goal, an immediate annuity may be appropriate, so long as it is understood that it may provide no benefit at the annuitant’s death. Indeed, if the annuitant lives beyond the point where any refund element is payable, an immediate annuity will not provide any death benefit. 2. Where the Goal Is Income in the Future Where the goal is income in the future, several annuity strategies may be appropriate. 1. Accumulating money now, to purchase an

immediate annuity later 2. Purchasing longevity now 3. Purchasing a “ladder” of longevity annuities over time 4. Purchasing a deferred annuity now, and activating the Guaranteed Lifetime Withdrawal Rider later. 3. Where the Income Amount Must Be as High as Possible on a Guaranteed Basis: Where the primary goal is income, and the amount of that income must be as high as possible on a guaranteed basis, an immediate annuity is ideal. The keyword, here, is guaranteed, given that other alternatives (e.g., portfolio-based strategies) merely have the potential of generating higher retirement income. Still, the investor/retiree cannot be fully assured that they will. Where the income period is a fixed number of years, a Period Certain fixed immediate annuity will generally provide a more significant amount per year than can be assured from any investment alternative because the non-annuity alternative must often preserve principal. November 20, 2019

4. Where the Goal Is Accumulation of Capital Where the goal is capital accumulation, an immediate annuity is clearly not suitable, but a deferred annuity may be. If the preservation of the principal is a requirement, a fixed deferred annuity might be appropriate. Most fixed annuities purchased today are Indexed annuities, which give the investor the benefit of receiving the return of a specific index, (i.e., S&P 500) without market risks. When a variable annuity is purchased, in the absence of a Guaranteed Living Benefit rider, it might not be a good choice, like a variable annuity, except to the extent that its cash value is invested in the fixed account, does not offer safety of principal. If, however, the purchaser is willing to regard a return of purchase payments in installments, no matter what happens to policy earnings, as a guarantee of principal, a Guaranteed Minimum Withdrawal Benefit (GMWB) rider to a variable deferred annuity can serve as an instrument for capital accumulation

with “safety of principal.” Indeed, the GMWB provision of many contracts includes a step-up feature that assures not only the return of the original investment in installments but also any contract gain accrued as of the point where the step-up option may be exercised. However, it is essential to emphasize that in this context, the safety of the principal provided by the deferred annuity exists only if the annuity owner accesses the principal according to the terms of the guarantee. In the context of a GMWB, this means that the principal is not guaranteed unless the annuity owner is willing to extract that principal as a series of periodic payments over a span of many years. 3 Tips for an Eco-Friendly Holiday Season

his holiday season, select wildlife-themed gifts that help protect nature. By Desert Star Staff On average, there has been an astonishing 60 percent decline in the size of populations of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians in just over 40 years, according to the most recent World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Living Planet Report, and the top threat to species is human activity.

Adjusting holiday traditions to be friendlier toward the planet -- as well as the people and animals who rely on a healthy environment to survive -- can be a meaningful way to spread goodwill during the season. Here are three ideas for doing so: Waste Not: Wasted food represents about 8 percent

of global greenhouse gas emissions and is a main contributor to deforestation and the depletion of global water sources. Shopping for foods grown and raised sustainably can reduce the footprint of your holiday menu. You can green your holidays further by reducing your plastic consumption. It’s

projected that by 2050, the total amount of plastic waste in the oceans will weigh more than all fish, and 99 percent of seabirds will have ingested plastics. Shop with reusable tote bags and opt for gift wrap and décor made only from sustainable materials. Give Gifts That Give Back: When you make a donation this holiday season, consider giving gifts that help protect nature, such as those found on WWF’s online gift center, For animal lovers, WWF’s wildlife-themed gifts are a good choice. Symbolic species adoptions, are educational and fun. There are more than 100 species available, ranging from favorites like sloths, elephants, tigers, pandas and polar bears, to new offerings like the ladybug, gentoo penguin and hawksbill turtle bale. All symbolic adoption donations made through the gift catalog come with an adoption certificate, as well as a color photo and description card of the adopted species. Adoptions of $55 or more

come with a soft animal plush of the adopter’s choosing. Other gift selections include unique socks, featuring flamingoes, tigers, wolves, hedgehogs and more, t-shirts and sweatshirts, elephant slippers, animal puppets and panda bobbleheads. For more information, call 1-800-CALLWWF or visit worldwildlife.gifts. Fundraise: Throwing a holiday bash? Deck the halls with purpose by combining your entertaining efforts with a fundraiser dedicated to protecting the environment. For example, with WWF’s Panda Nation campaign, you can turn any special occasion into an opportunity to protect threatened species and wild places around the world, while raising awareness about important issues. By making small changes to your favorite holiday traditions, a joyful and rewarding holiday season can go hand-in-hand with helping wildlife and nature thrive. StatePoint

5 Important Things Learned About Alzheimer’s Disease in 2019 By Desert Star Staff In 2019, researchers discovered meaningful insights into the causes, risk factors and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Here are five of their important discoveries: 1. Lifestyle may play a major role in reducing risk. We’re told that eating a healthy diet and exercising are good for overall health, but did you know that these habits may also reduce one’s risk for cognitive decline and dementia? Research reported at this year’s Alzheimer’s Association International Conference suggested that making multiple healthy lifestyle choices -- including eating a low-fat, high vegetable diet, not smoking, getting regular exercise and engaging in cognitive stimulation -- may decrease dementia risk and may even offset increased risk caused by genes or exposure to air pollution. This year, researchers also learned that intensive high blood pressure treatment can significantly reduce the occurrence of mild cognitive impairment, which often leads to dementia. 2. A blood test is on the horizon. Researchers are working at full speed to develop a simple blood test that can detect signs of Alzheimer’s early and accurately. Blood tests are cheaper, easier to administer, less invasive and more accessible than many advanced technologies currently available for Alzheimer’s research and diagnosis. Once these tests

4

DesertSTAR

become available in doctors’ offices, they may also play a role in early detection of dementia, giving individuals and families more time to plan for the future and get needed care and support services, and potentially increase their chances of participating in clinical trials. 3. Alzheimer’s is different in men and women. Two-thirds of people living with Alzheimer’s disease in the U.S. are women, but scientists aren’t exactly sure why. This year, researchers learned about a number of differences in progression and risk between women and men, including newly identified sex-specific risk genes, sexbased differences in how Alzheimer’s may spread in the brain and cognitive benefits for women who participate in the paid workforce. 4. Vision and hearing loss may increase dementia risk. Most older adults experience some form of vision and/ or hearing loss later in life. New research suggests these sensory impairments may increase risk for cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s, especially if you experience both. Sensory impairment screening may help identify older adults at higher risk of developing dementia, thereby encouraging early detection. This new knowledge opens the possibility that preventing or correcting sensory impairments may reduce dementia risk. 5. Researchers are looking at new drug targets. Researchers are taking a fresh look at the possible causes for

dementia and how drugs might be used to stop the disease in its tracks. More than 500 new candidate drug targets have been identified that address everything from reducing inflammation in the brain to protecting nerve cell health. The

Alzheimer’s Association’s Part the Cloud awards help fund this type of out-of-the-box research and move findings from the laboratory, through trials, into possible therapies for people. Researchers are poised to uncover even more in

2020 and beyond. Increased funding for research from the federal government and nonprofit organizations is driving the rapidly growing body of knowledge about Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. StatePoint

Caregiving in Texas: A ‘Thank You’ for an Often-Thankless Role

Caregiving is a highly stressful and sometimes emotional experience, and a new report details just how complex caregiving duty can be. (Adobe Stock) By Desert Star Staff AUSTIN, Texas – In Texas, 3.4 million people are caregivers, a role they are thrust into whether they choose it or not. And new data quantifies the value of their efforts. According to AARP, Texas caregivers provided $35 billion worth of unpaid care in 2017.

Rose Puente of San Antonio has been a caregiver for both her parents, her aunt, her son and her husband. She says while it’s a rewarding job, caregiving is a highly stressful and sometimes emotional experience. “They all get to a point where they lose patience and

I happen to be the one that kind of gets the brunt of that,” she says. “But it doesn’t take long for them to say, ‘Thank you for what you’ve done, I’m sorry that I did that.’” According to the Valuing the Invaluable report, family caregivers come from every age, racial and socioeconomic

group, and 60% are balancing their caregiving duties with a paid job elsewhere. November is Family Caregivers Month. The report also reveals the complex responsibilities of a caregiver, which include patient advocacy, financial management, and assisting in daily living activities. According to Amanda Fredriksen, associate state director of advocacy and outreach at AARP Texas, caregivers also are becoming increasingly responsible for complex medical tasks, such as wound care and medication management. “That’s stressful and that’s taxing and caregivers need support,” she stresses. “They need help and training and they need to be able to ask questions of the professionals so that they can do right by their care recipients.” Texas lawmakers passed the CARE Act in 2017, which is helping to support family caregivers when their loved one

is admitted to the hospital. This year, they provided funding for respite programs for caregivers. Puente says she values any ‘alone time’ she can get. “It’s important to take care of yourself,” she explains. “It’s important to know how to just take an hour to two hours a week, that’s what I look for. Just to be able to say, ‘I need to take care of myself so I can take care of them.’” The report notes that increasing demand for caregivers and shrinking families will make caregiving even more difficult in the years to come. There were about seven potential family caregivers for every person age 80plus in 2010. By the year 2030 that number could potentially be cut in half. Education Week: A Good Time to Thank a Teacher By Desert Star Staff This is the start of the 98th annual American Education Week, a time to celebrate the achievements of public education and acknowledge the contributions of all those who make a difference in students’ lives. It’s a week when teachers, parents and support professionals are recognized for the hard work and dedication each brings to making the state’s public schools the best they can be. Rich Askey, president of the Pennsylvania State Education Association, says teachers and substitutes, counselors, office workers and school bus drivers all are important to educating the next generation of Pennsylvanians. “We’re all in it together and that’s what we celebrate – that we’re just one big group of people who are focused on the future of Pennsylvania and the

future of our kids,” he stresses. A schedule of the week’s events is online at psea.org/ AmericanEducationWeek. Askey says this is a good time for parents to visit their children’s public school and see for themselves how much public education has changed over the years. “There’s a lot more responsibility on teachers and our support staff with high rates of poverty, higher rates of special ed, and the accountability that’s in our public schools right now is higher than what it was,” he points out. Tuesday is Parents Day, when parents may be invited into the classroom for a hands-on experience of what the day is like for their child. Askey believes that joining in the celebration of public education may inspire some parents and community members to take their

Fishery Managers May Reconsider Allowing Older, Wasteful Gear By Desert Star Staff COSTA MESA, Calif. Federal fishery managers are considering funding a review of existing data to determine whether to allow an older type of fishing gear - one long criticized, both by recreational fishers and conservationists - to be used off the West Coast. The Trump administration wants to look at allowing shallow-set longlines starting at 200 miles offshore. Recreational angler and retired naval officer Bob Kurz, www.desertstarweekly.com

a trustee for the International Game Fish Association and a member of the Laguna Niguelbased Coastal Conservation Association California, said the crews using the gear to catch swordfish often end up killing a huge amount of unintended bycatch, including whales, porpoise, turtles, tuna, marlin, and even seabirds. “Over the years,” he said, “many of the species have sometimes been pushed to the point where they could face the risk of extinction.”

The Pacific Fishery Management Council is to meet next Tuesday in Costa Mesa to take a fresh look at shallow-set longline gear, which involves unfurling a line that is 30 miles or longer, using in excess of 1,000 hooks. The goal is to increase the take of domestic swordfish. The meeting is open to the public, and people also can submit comments online, on the council’s website. The State of California just passed a law to help November 20, 2019

fishing crews purchase a more sustainable type of gear, called deep-set buoy gear, if they stop using drift gillnets, which catch just about everything that swims by. Kurz said the deep-set buoy gear should be given time to work before the agency considers allowing the more wasteful longlines. “The two gear types should not be deployed concurrent with one another,” he said. “We need to let the deep-set buoy gear be put into use, and

see how well it works.” Longlines currently are permitted in the mid-Pacific area with a fleet based in Hawaii. The current proposal from the National Marine Fisheries Service calls for a review of the longlines outside of the 200-mile exclusive economic zone off the Pacific coast. Meeting information and agenda are online at pcouncil.org, and public comments are being taken at pfmc.psmfc.org.

A New Political Platform: Better Nutrition for all Americans?

Soda consumption, a contributor to obesity and diabetes in the U.S., fell to a 31-year low in 2016, according to Beverage Digest. But sugars and refined starches still make up much of the American diet. (Free-photos/Pixabay) By Desert Star Staff DES MOINES, Iowa – Democratic candidates running for president in 2020 have multiple ideas about how to fix the nation’s health-care system, but

one cardiologist says they should also be addressing what’s making people sick. Cardiologist and Dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University Dariush

By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE – An athome test could be a major breakthrough for screening cervical cancer in women, according to a new study. Researchers at the University of Washington and Kaiser Permanente Washington teamed up on a study involving 20,000 women who weren’t getting regular screening. Half were mailed home tests for human papillomavirus, or HPV – the virus that can cause cervical cancer. The other half received just standard care such as annual reminders for preventive screenings. Diana Buist, a senior investigator at the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute, says the mailed tests increased screening rates by 50%. “Which is a lot,” she states. “The women that we tested the home test kit on were underscreened, which means that they were overdue for cervical cancer screening, and that’s about one in four women

in the United States. And 50% of cervical cancers are diagnosed in those women.” About 12,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year. Buist says screening rates are declining across the country. She notes homebased testing has been offered in other countries, but this is the first trial of home kits in the U.S. Rachel Winer, an epidemiology professor at the UW School of Public Health and lead author of this research, says studies have shown there’s no difference between the results from at-home tests and ones performed by physicians. She says health professionals are looking to overcome the barriers to screening more women. “It can be hard to find time to come in, difficulties taking time off of work or finding child care or transportation,” she points out. “In addition, many women have had

Mozzaffarian says 50 years ago, when the population was exploding, the goal was to reduce hunger, so food was designed to contain as many calories as possible. For most people today,

hunger is no longer an issue, but he says many continue to eat in quantities that lead to diabetes, heart disease and obesity. “I would like to see the Democratic candidates have a platform around food,” says Mozzaffarian. “It’s the number one cause of poor health, it’s the number one issue for sustainability. You know we have childhood obesity, it’s a huge issue for the economy, and nobody’s talking about it.” Reports show Iowa is among the top 10 states with the nation’s highest adult obesity rates, and nationwide, three in four adults are overweight or obese. Mozaffarian says if the nation wants to reduce disease and its costs, meaningful health-care reform is critical and should be a nonpartisan priority. Mozaffarian has joined a Silicon Valley investor and a former U.S. Food and Drug

Administration leader to build momentum on Capitol Hill to put more federal money into nutrition. He believes it would benefit the economy, creating new jobs around healthy food that could be exported to the rest of the world. He says right now, nutrition research is fragmented and too many people don’t know what to eat. “We recently published a paper and 42% of calories in the U.S. food supply are poor quality carbohydrates,” says Mozzaffarian. “So, think about that – almost half of the calories in the U.S. food supply come from refined starch and sugar.” The U.S. spends more money on health care than any other country in the world. Mozaffarian notes that people with lower incomes often have the worst diets – which creates a cycle of poor health, lost productivity, increased health costs and poverty.

But she notes 88% of

women who did the home kit tested negative. “That means that if you were to roll this out, only 12 out of 100 women who did this would actually need to come in for additional followups,” she stresses. “So, you’re saving the need for that clinic

visit for 88% of women.” Disclosure: Kaiser Health Plan of Washington Project contributes to our fund for reporting on Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention, Health Issues, Hunger/Food/ Nutrition, Senior Issues.

Labor Organizers Face Hurdles Trying to Reach Migrant Workers By Desert Star Staff Labor organizers says several North Carolina farms are blocking them from being able to speak and provide information to migrant workers. Justin Flores is vice president of the Farm Labor Organizing Committee, a union representing agricultural workers in the state. He says most of North Carolina’s agriculture depends on a workforce recruited from elsewhere, and adds employers have an

unusual amount of power they can wield to prevent workers from accessing information. “We had some folks out there who were just talking to workers as they left work, just standing on the public part of the street,” says Flores. “And workers would drive out in the car and roll their window down, we’d give ‘em flyer, talk to them a little bit, and they’d go on their way.” He says the employing farm called the police and accused

the organizers of trespassing. While accurate numbers are difficult to come by, the state Department of Commerce estimates there are upwards of 80,000 migrant farm workers in North Carolina, most working on tobacco and produce farms in the eastern part of the state. Flores points to middlemen known as farmlabor contractors, who fly south to recruit workers from rural communities, mainly in Mexico. He says the November 20, 2019

contractors then monitor those workers, day in and day out. “They are able to control the process about when they have their appointment in the U.S. consulate in Mexico for their visa,” says Flores. “Then, they’re providing the transportation from Mexico into North Carolina, providing the housing, providing transportation to and from work, and to and from the store.” While farm labor contractors have been around for decades, Flores says they are increasingly

becoming a major player in the state’s farm industry. “These labor contractors went from being a minuscule presence five years ago, to now, there’s probably 2,000 or 3,000 workers, working for them in the state,” says Flores. Flores says his organization regularly fields calls from farm workers around the state, who have questions about their rights or who are requesting assistance. www.desertstarweekly.com

How to Navigate the Challenges of Caregiving By Desert Star Staff As the population of older U.S. adults grows, more Americans are taking on long-term caregiving duties for loved ones. An estimated 43.5 million adults in the U.S. have provided unpaid care in the past 12 months, according to AARP. “While caregiving presents many opportunities for growing strong bonds with loved ones, the work itself can be demanding, eventually taking a toll on those shouldering the burden,” says Lakelyn Hogan, a gerontologist and caregiver advocate at Home Instead Senior Care. In honor of National Family Caregivers Month observed in November, Hogan and the experts at Home Instead Senior Care are sharing tips to navigate the challenges. Use Online Resources: To fully advocate for your loved one, it’s necessary to understand his or her medical conditions and the specific areas where extra help is needed. Doing so will help you secure support services, get information from doctors, ensure medications are being administered safely and even help you

make appropriate meal and transportation arrangements. Most reputable sources of condition-specific information can also double as a place for finding care and support. Search for Innovative Tools: Innovative companies are taking note of the needs of caregivers and are designing everyday products to help them make daily tasks easier and more comfortable for all involved. In the realm of personal care, this trend is especially important: personal care activities were identified in an AARP survey as among the most challenging daily activities caregivers must manage. When it comes to shaving, a task that seems simple enough when performed on oneself, things can get tricky. Currently, 46 percent of caregivers are using a disposable razor to provide an assisted shave to their loved one at home, according to a Gillette survey. The problem? When caregivers use one of the 4,000 razors designed for shaving oneself, turning it around to use on someone else is trickier than you might expect -- not to mention time-consuming. Fortunately, there is now a

razor specifically engineered for assisted shaving. A first of its kind, the Gillette TREO razor includes special features that protect against nicks and cuts, and its clog-free design doesn’t require the use of water. What’s more, the razor has an ergonomic handle providing greater comfort and control. These updates are particularly critical, as sensitive and thinning skin is prevalent among older adults and is a common side effect of many medications. To learn more,

visit Gillette.com/TREO. As more companies introduce tools designed for caregivers, such personal care tasks as shaving have the potential to become easier, safer and more comfortable. Make Space for Yourself: Prioritizing your own health and happiness is critical. After all, if your health suffers, it could make it impossible for you to continue caregiving. Rely on family and friends or a parttime professional to step in and give you a chance to recharge.

Use the personal time to read, journal, exercise, take a nature walk, visit your doctor or simply meet with friends. You may also benefit from joining a caregivers’ support group. Luckily, social media has made it simple for people to find one another and connect. While the roles and responsibilities of caregiving vary, leveraging the resources designed to universally assist caregivers can help you navigate the many challenges of daily life. StatePoint

It’s most important to find times for reflection and contemplation because there’s such an onrush of activity, ideas and ideals flowing here, there, everywhere in this season. There’s a desire to travel, discovering new realities important to your well-being. Without pause, they will be missed. ‘Blinded By The Light,’ A Tribute to Springsteen

Warner Bros. “Blinded by the Light” is a true story based on a young Pakistani teenager’s infatuation with the music of Bruce Springsteen. The year is 1987, and Javed (Viveik Kaira) lives at home with his parents in the drab factory town of Luton, England. His father, Malik (Kulvinder Ghir), who immigrated from Pakistan with his wife many years earlier, has worked at the local GM plant

for 16 years. His primary focus in life is to earn a decent living and keep his children away from British influence. He also wants his son to study hard so that he can get a good job in business and earn a decent wage. However, Javed has a talent for creative writing, which is encouraged by his high school Literature teacher. Early in the film, Javed is introduced to the music

of Bruce Springsteen when he literally bumps into fellow Pakistani student Roops (Aaron Phagura) at school. It is love at first sound. Javed also becomes smitten with Eliza (Nell Williams), a fellow classmate in his literature class. Eventually, he gathers up enough courage to ask her out on a date. But will this last? While Javed has issues with his father concerning

his career choices, Eliza also faces personal problems with her own dad. He is a racist who will probably be shocked by the fact that his daughter is dating a Pakistani. The star of the film, Viveik Kaira, is a real charmer who brings Javed to life on screen. You really root for him as he desperately tries to follow his dreams despite his father’s disdain for his career choices. Will he be able to study writing without losing the love of his family? “Blinded by the Light” was directed by Gurinder Chadha,

who also directed “Bend It Like Beckham” in 2002. The screenplay for “Blinded by the Light” is by Safraz Manzoor, Paul Mayeda, and Chadra and is based on Manzoor’s memoir. “Blinded by the Light,” from Warner Bros., is rated PG-13 for thematic material and language. “Blinded by the Light” is now available on Blu-ray and DVD and contains the following unique feature: “Behind the Scenes: The True Story Behind the Film” and deleted scenes.

WITH LADY BEVERLY COHN

Andy Garcia stars in “Key Largo” on Stage at The Geffen Playhouse

The first time I saw Andy Garcia was in The Untouchables. I was mesmerized by his acting and powerful on-screen presence. I made a note to myself that he was a young actor destined to become a major movie star and, indeed, he has. With dozens of movie credits going back to 1984, there are too many to list, but here are a few of my favorites: Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Book Club, Kill the Messenger, Rob The Mob, At Middleton, City Island, Ocean’s Twelve(and Thirteen) Smokin’Aces, When a Man Loves a Woman, The Godfather, Part III, and Internal Affairs. So, it was with great anticipation that I was going to cover Jeffrey Hatcher and Garcia’s adaption of the 1948 film noir version of Key Largo starring the incomparable team of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, as well as the super bad guy, Edward G. Robinson. It was directed by John Huston, who changed the original story of Maxwell Anderson’s 1939 play, which centered around the Spanish Civil War. Presented by the Geffen Playhouse, Warner Brothers Theatre Ventures, in association with Frank Mancuso, and Andy Garcia, there is nothing overtly wrong with the play. The casting is excellent, beginning with Garcia in the lead role of Johnny Rocco, a bad guy who was deported to Italy for a year and a day, but sneaked back to America via Cuba and was now running a drug cartel. Played out on set designer John Lee Beatty’s sprawling, incredibly detailed period set of the hotel lobby, which was perfect for the

ensuing unfolding drama. The hotel is closed for the winter and is occupied by caretakers blind Mr. D’Alcala (Tony Plana) and his widowed daughter-in-law, Nora D’Alcala (Rose McIver). While a full-blown hurricane is brewing, the hotel has been taken over by Rocco and his gang. Curly (Louis Mustillo) and Toots (Stephen Borrello) are the boss’s henchman who keep Nora and Mr. D’Alcala at bay. Also present is Gaye Dawn, Rocco’s girlfriend, exquisitely played by Joely Fisher. Gaye is a former entertainer but has turned into lush and is treated very poorly by Rocco. She gives one of the best, heartbreaking performances of the evening when Rocco forces her to sing for a drink that she desperately needs. Rounding out the cast is the very talented Danny Pino as the troubled, brooding Frank McCloud, who was a captain during World War II and had been traveling around the country to talk to parents of soldiers killed in combat. Mr. D’Alcala’s son served under McCloud’s command but made a decision to counter his captain’s orders, which had tragic results. We don’t exactly know what’s wrong with McCloud as Pino keeps that sub-text well under wraps. Now, what would a town be like without a sheriff? Well, Richard Riehle does an okay job as the corrupt Sheriff Gash, who has no compunctions about taking a bribe here and there. Finally, there’s the character of Ziggy, well played by Bradley Snedeker, who brings a bit of much-needed levity to the proceedings. This snappy,

The cast of Key Largo: L-R Danny Pino, Andy Garcia, Joely Fisher, Richard Riehle, and Tony Plana in Key Largo, directed by Doug Hughes. Photo credit: Jeff Lorch. handsome dude is a drug dealer who drives down to Key Largo during the raging hurricane for a drug buy from Rocco. Carrying a suitcase filled with money, on seeing the young Nora and blind Mr. D’Alcala quips, “Is this the new gang? They look pretty tough.” Let’s just say there’s an unexpected twist to the quarter-of-a-milliondollar cocaine transaction. There are confrontations between McCloud and Rocco, which included pistols and an undeveloped relationship between McCloud and Nora to whom Rocco has taken a fancy. Rocco, with all his bluster, is actually afraid of thunder, which could tarnish his tough-guy image just a bit, and makes him human instead of a cliché characterization of an Italian gangster. Mayhem ensues, and there’s lots of unconvincing shooting. All this action takes place during

an increase in the hurricane’s ferocity, beautifully replicated by Alex Hawthorn’s thunderous sound effects, including the sound of a buoy being tossed around in the water or hearing thunder or seeing the pouring rain through a window and the skylight. Peter Kaczorowski’s lighting design, and Linda Cho’s costumes, especially those nifty suits in which she dressed Garcia, are both outstanding. Rounding out the excellent production values are Kaitlyn Pietras and Jason H. Thompson’s projection designs, and Arturo Sandoval’s music, all working together for a satisfying audio-visual experience. Again, there is nothing terribly wrong with this production. All the technical elements are outstanding, as well as a highly professional cast. Still, Doug Hughes’ direction left a number of dead spots both in some of the

stagnant blocking and uneven pacing. There are no particularly strong highs or lows. Still, all this said, seeing Andy Garcia, Danny Pino, and Joely Fisher deliver strong performances makes this re-imagined production of Key Largo just a tad short of spectacular, but definitely worth a trip to The Geffen Playhouse. Corks & Cuisine-Desert Cancer Foundation 2019

Eric Presser MD, Amir Lavaf MD, Exec. Dir. Teresa Whipple, Elber Camacho MD, and Mitch Blumberg. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause Desert Cancer Foundation, DCF, held its Corks & Cuisine gala on November 16th. The event was held at the prestigious Ironwood Country Club. This was such a beautiful place to hold this outdoor dinner under the stars with entertainment. The Ironwood Executive Chef Mark Sickenberger, presented his scrumptious array of tantalizing foods. The appetizer table was filled with different and tasty chips, dips, mushrooms, vegetables, and more. This was a taste sensation for appetizers. Johnny Meza entertained on the Piano while guests mingled with their friends and colleagues. Drink stations served the beverages for the evening. I found one of the beautiful things was that the food stations were so complete, so no one had to stand in line to fill a plate, buffet style. Chefs were on hand to slice the meats to the desired width for each patron. There were yummy cheesy potatoes, beef and my favorite, vast and small shrimp, and so much more. No one had to sit at their tables while waiters brought their meals. There was an extensive silent auction where mostly rare and expensive wines were offered. Other auction items included dinners, golf, and travel. The program started with videos of clients who spoke so gratefully about the help they received from the Desert Cancer Foundation. Robert Bernheimer talked to the guests, and the Raise Your Paddle event was held to raise money. It’s incredible what each dollar can do to help a cancer patient, not only with treatments but with the costs involved. When a client is struggling with this disease, all the energies should be on cancer and not on the worry about how they were going to pay for it or if they could even get the treatments, medications, insurance payments, and more. Every dollar raised goes to help pay for $10.00 in cancerrelated services. The Foundation was started in 1994 and has paid for more than 91 million dollars and helped over 8,236 local residents with the cost of their cancer care. All monies raised stay in the Coachella Valley. Main sponsors generously

There is something for just about every listener via a wide range of new releases available this month. Artist: Sarah Brightman Title: HYMN: Sarah Brightman in Concert (Eagle Vision) You might like if you enjoy: Sarah Brightman, Idina Menzel Tell me more: A year after Sarah Brightman’s 12th studio album “Hymn” was released, the multi-format companion release “HYMN: Sarah Brightman in Concert” has been issued and provides a fully immersive experience for fans of the English soprano. Indeed, the visual/audio recording was captured at the Festspielhaus in the Bavarian Alps; the two-act performance features a musical film in the first act followed by a live concert. Brightman’s threeoctave voice remains a wonder and is used to perfection as she is accompanied by her band as well as the Bavarian Philharmonic Orchestra, a 50-voice choir and the Ludwig Ensemble of dancers. Guest performers on the title include Japanese keyboardist Yoshiki, and singers Vincent Niclo,

Mario Frangoulis and Narcis. Brightman’s signature vocals hit their mark on the rich mix of material, ranging from classical crossover selections (“Sogni,” “Figlio Perduto”) to Broadway hits (particularly “Phantom Of The Opera”) and rock- and pop-mining selections (Brian May’s “Who Wants To Live Forever” and La Bionda’s “There For Me”). Beyond the stunning audio and visual featured on the title is the power of the choreography of dancers, use of state-of-theart lighting and other theatrical effects that add power to the concept film and concert that follows. One of the early highlights of the film is where Brightman performs “Beautiful” near a reflecting pool, and the bending of her image in the creatively-lit water offers an artful look to the performance. Bonus features on the DVD and Blu-ray include behind the scenes footage, interviews and photo galleries. “HYMN: Sarah Brightman in Concert” is available on DVD+CD, Bluray+CD and via digital formats. Mandy Moore Announces 2020 North American Tour By Desert Star Staff Los Angeles, CA - Singersongwriter Mandy Moore has announced her 2020 North American tour dates. It will hit theatres in major cities nationwide including The Beacon Theater in New York (March 24), The Chicago Theatre in Chicago (April 18),The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville (April 5), The Warfield in San Francisco (May 2), and The Majestic Theatre in Dallas (April 23). Tickets go on sale Friday, November 22, at 10:00 am local. intimate, elevated evening of new and old tunes, performed with a superb group of musicians. I want the show to have threads of what the writing and recording process was like with this band, almost like you’ve been invited in our living room for an inside glimpse. It just feels good to be sharing this side of me again in its purest form, a real side of me I have been itching to put back into the universe,” Moore says of the tour. Mandy’s artist presale will start on Wednesday, November 20, at 10 am local. Also, the Spotify presale will run alongside Mandy’s presale at 10 am local on November 20. All presales end on Thursday, November 21 @ 10p local. The tour comes after the announcement of her highly

anticipated return to music. Over the past several weeks, Moore has released two singles from her upcoming album, due out next year on Verve Forecast. The album marks Moore’s first return to music in over a decade. Her first single “When I Wasn’t Watching” is a classic piece of California pop centered on her captivating vocals. NPR raved that “the song sways with Stevie Nicks energy,” and The Atlantic described it as “...folkie rock pop, building on a lineage running from Fleetwood Mac to Haim.” Her second single “I’d Rather Lose,” was released shortly after and embodies a bright vitality along with Moore’s warm vocals that American Songwriter called “honest and deeply introspective.” Newly signed to Verve November 20, 2019

Forecast, Moore began recording the new album earlier this year. In a purposeful departure from the more tightly structured pop of her previous material, she’s worked closely

with long-time collaborator and producer Mike Viola and with her husband, Taylor Goldsmith (singer/guitarist/ songwriter for L.A.-based folkrock band Dawes), creating the album’s lyrics on her own and recording each song live with a full band setup.

Veterans: Show Potential Employers You Are a Team Player

clues that you can use to figure out what role on the team the company is seeking to fill — whether it be a leader, a manager or an individual contributor. Use these clues to determine what attributes and teamwork experience to highlight on your resume. Get Ready: Practice answering some of the most common interview questions — succinctly. You can count on getting questions like, “How do you demonstrate you’re a team player?” or “Give an example of a time you had a conflict with others and how you handled it.” In a brief and organized way, be ready to highlight your personal contributions. For career opportunities and other tips and resources, visit wellsfargojobs. com/military. “Teamwork means getting things done and trusting that you can count on others,” says Quinn. “Being able to show that teamwork is inherent to your own values and experience will put your job candidacy at the top of any stack.” StatePoint

By Desert Star Staff If you’re a veteran, you have proven you can work on teams and, in many cases, lead them. Yet corporate recruiting experts say it’s crucial to properly frame your experience to maximize your chances of getting hired. “Veterans bring many valuable skills and qualities to the corporate environment,”

says Jerry Quinn, head of Military & Veteran Talent External Recruiting and Enterprise Military & Veteran Initiatives at Wells Fargo. “These include traits like strategic planning, critical thinking, problem-solving, communications and adaptability. In my experience, however, veterans sometimes have trouble conveying their

unique contributions and effectiveness on teams.” The post-9/11 veteran unemployment rate is at an all-time low of below 4 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This figure may not paint the full picture about the transition to civilian life. Many veterans remain underemployed or in jobs that do not use the

full range of their skills. So, what’s the best way to approach your job search? Consider these tips from Quinn and Wells Fargo’s Hands on Banking program: Make the Conversion: While in the military, people often speak in terms of what “we” did together. In the corporate world, it’s more important to be able to clearly state what “you” did to help the team succeed. So look through your resume, converting “we” to “I,” citing specific, measurable criteria where possible. And remember that potential employers may not always be familiar with military jargon and acronyms, so use language any civilian recruiter will understand. For example, “I was a leader of a team of 100, with seven direct reports,” or “I was responsible for maintaining more than $2 million worth of specialized government equipment.” Use Keywords: Remember to customize your resume each time you apply for a job. Most job descriptions provide

By Desert Star Staff Use of the death penalty is disappearing from entire sections of the United States and eroding in others. That’s according to data from the Death Penalty Information Center. The center’s Executive Director Robert Dunham says not only have executions declined by 75%, but death sentences have dropped by 85%.

He says the numbers are striking. “There were more than 300 death sentences per year that were imposed in the United States in the mid1990s,” says Dunham. “We are going to, this year, have the fifth straight year in which there were fewer than 50 death sentences imposed.” Earlier this year, the Kentucky Supreme Court

heard oral arguments in a case that could raise the death-penalty eligibility age in the state to 21. Since 1976, three people have been executed in Kentucky. Dunham says public opinion, high-profile cases, and improvements in capital punishment defense and evidence have all contributed to judges and juries shifting away from death sentences.

“And as more and more states move away from the death penalty, and as juries return it less and less, we are reaching a point in which we’re going to have fewer death sentences this year than in any year since the death penalty came back in the 1970s,” says Dunham. Dunham also points out that use of the death penalty remains

concentrated in the South. “When we’re looking at where executions are still taking place, it is almost exclusively in the southern states,” says Dunham. He says 29 states, along with the U-S government and military, continue to have the death penalty as an option in criminal cases.

By Desert Star Staff At least 10 people were shot in California after a gunman opened fire at a family gathering, police say. Four people have been killed while others have been taken to hospital.

Family and friends were watching football in the backyard when someone started shooting at them. No one has been arrested so far, with no information on a suspect released. #BREAKING MASSIVE

police response in a neighborhood by Peach/Pine in Fresno. Streets clogged with cars/ambulances...a lot of people being put on stretchers. Waiting to learn more. pic.twitter. com/HUT03Cdryp

— Dennis Valera (@dennisreports) November 18, 2019 The incident took place at about 6pm Sunday (2am GMT Monday) on the city’s southeast side. Police have described it as a “mass

casualty shooting.” Three people were declared dead at the scene while a third victim died at the hospital. Six injured people remain in hospital with their condition declared stable.

By Desert Star Staff In the wake of an explosive revelation that ABC News allegedly knew the extent of Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes years ago but chose not to report them, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has demanded answers from the network’s execs. In his letter to ABC News president James Goldston, McCarthy demanded the names of those involved in the decision not to run the story, as well as their

motives. In a video clip leaked earlier this month, ABC News anchor Amy Robach is caught on a “hot mic,” speaking to colleagues about the alleged coverup. “I’ve had this interview with Virginia Roberts… we would not put it on the air,” Robach says about the woman who now, three years later, publicly accuses Epstein of using her as a sex slave, and pimping her out to his powerful friends, including Britain’s Prince Andrew.

The network rushed to defend its coverage (or lack of it), claiming that the story was killed only because their journalists could not corroborate details. It immediately launched a hunt for the whistleblower who leaked the video to conservative group Project Veritas. McCarthy’s letter, signed by several House Republicans and obtained by journalist Megyn Kelly, slammed ABC’s damage control of the situation.

We believe that uncovering the source of information is incomparably less important than the possibility of exposing the source of a human trafficking operation. The lawmakers also want to know what additional information ABC executives may have learned about Epstein following the first interview with the victim, and whether they informed authorities of it at any point. Who was involved in deciding this story was

not of public interest, and what were their reasons for determining so? Another question urges Robach to “expand on the ‘outside forces’ she mentioned as potentially responsible for the story, not running.” In the clip, she said: “First of all, I was told ‘who’s Jeffrey Epstein.’ Then the Palace found out that we had her whole allegations about Prince Andrew and threatened us a million different ways.”

New Center Opening in Palm Desert at El Paseo Plaza in January 2020 By Desert Star Staff RANCHO MIRAGE, CA: Braille Institute of America (BIA) is pleased to announce the opening of its third neighborhood center located in Palm Desert at the El Paseo Plaza. The new Coachella Valley center, scheduled to open on Tuesday, January 21, will be located at 74-245 Highway 111 Suite E101, Palm Desert -- at the prime intersection of El Paseo Drive and Highway 111. The first-floor office suite will be easily accessible via public transportation and SunDial Access, in addition to having ample and convenient parking. Anyone interested in scheduling an appointment or speaking with someone can call (760) 321-1111. Celebrating its Centennial

milestone this year, Braille Institute is renewing its commitment to provide free programs and services in areas with a high concentration of need by utilizing the “Neighborhood Center” delivery model. By locating centers in geographic areas with a high population of visionimpaired individuals, BIA can provide more convenient access to its services. In July, BIA opened a Neighborhood Center in the city of Riverside, which is also the fastestgrowing county in California. “We are delighted to open this new Neighborhood Center in a location that is so convenient to the residents of the Coachella Valley,” said Peter Mindnich, President of Braille Institute. “We now have two new centers, in Riverside

and Palm Desert, providing services to those who are visually impaired in Riverside and San Bernardino counties.” The new Coachella Valley Neighborhood Center will focus on core services -- Low Vision Rehabilitation, Digital Literacy (library services and technology training), Orientation and Mobility, and Daily Living Skills. The Center will offer small group and one-on-one instruction for basic cooking classes, daily living skills, and support groups. In-home services will be available for those unable to come into the Center. Additionally, Braille Institute is collaborating with other organizations in the area to provide enrichment classes to Braille Institute students at no charge. Cathedral

By Desert Star Staff The Duke of York’s appearance on the BBC, in which he “categorically” denied allegations of sex abuse against a minor and “explained” his ties with Jeffrey Epstein, was a total train wreck according to the skeptical online community. “I can absolutely categorically tell you it never happened,” Prince Andrew told BBC Newsnight’s Emily Maitlis, addressing the accusations by Virginia Giuffre, who claims she was forced into sex with Andrew between 1999 and 2002, during the time, she says, Epstein kept her as a “slave.”

“ Prince Andrew did not have sexual relations with that woman” #PrinceAndrewpic. twitter.com/XtEu7tmTHa Despite a widely circulated photo that appears to show Andrew with Giuffre, arm wrapped around her bare waist, the prince insisted that he has “no recollection of ever meeting this lady, none whatsoever.” At the same time, he remembers “weirdly distinctly” how he took his daughter to Pizza Express and spent the rest of the night at home on the day the accuser claims they had sex. Perfect alibi. Going to Pizza Express in

Working is an unusual thing for me to do... I remember it weirdly distinctly. Such a selective memory triggered much skepticism online, especially when he went on to challenge precise details of the accuser’s claims, who recalled him “profusely sweating” and “pouring with perspiration” when they danced one night. I have a particular medical condition, which is that I don’t sweat. The PR Team are sweating now, even if Andrew “Or I didn’t sweat at the time,” he said, somewhat ironically adding that he had only started

Prince Andrew’s ‘I don’t sweat’ excuses trigger avalanche of memes to be able to sweat again “in the recent past.” As for the photo of him with Giuffre, Prince Andrew had an investigation carried out to prove it was fake, but the results were inconclusive. Only his anonymous supporters had thus far claimed the image was doctored, while Giuffre insists the photo is absolutely real, and that even the FBI never contested this fact. Prince Andrew refused to disavow his relationship with Epstein, noting its “seriously beneficial outcomes,” but said it was a “stretch” to call it a close friendship. He admitted to staying on Epstein’s private island, visiting his home in Florida, traveling on his private plane and even inviting him to Princess Beatrice’s 18th birthday at Windsor Castle in July 2006 – but he “certainly” was unaware of a warrant already issued for Epstein arrest for sex crimes at the time. This is one of the most astonishing interviews I’ve ever watched. Brilliant forensic dissection by @maitlis desperate, toe-curling bullsh*t from Prince Andrew. Why on earth did he do this? Insane. — Piers After Epstein’s first 2008 conviction, for which he only served about 13 months in

luxury that average people could only imagine, Andrew famously visited him at a “convenient” to stay in New York mansion – but only to tell him they could not see each other anymore. I went there with the sole purpose of saying to him that because he had been convicted, it was inappropriate for us to be seen together. In another cringing episode, the prince said that he does “regret the fact that [Epstein] has quite obviously conducted himself in a manner unbecoming,” before the interviewer wondered if those were the proper words to describe a convicted sex offender. Meanwhile, at Buckingham Palace’s PR office... “Yeah, I’m sorry, I’m polite,” Andrew replied, emphasizing that Epstein’s arrest had become an absolute shock to him and a “constant sore” to the broader Royal Family, which “couldn’t be more supportive.” — Scott Spalding We all knew him, and I think that if we have a conversation about it, it’s... we are all left with the same thing, what on earth happened or how did he get to where he was, what did he do, how did he do it?

Traveling during the holidays can be stressful, but you can do your part to make guests feel comfortable by adding some cheerful touches to the area they’ll call home. Delight guests from the moment they enter your home by paying special attention to the entryway. Early Holiday Gift Arrives at North Coast Rep Theatre

Cast of “The Sunshine Boys.” Photo by Aaron Rumley By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association Most theatre audiences acknowledge that playwright Neil Simon was the true and anointed “king of comedy” not only in America but worldwide. They also realize they’re not likely to see his stripe and genius for comedy that the ‘common folk’ have embraced for 42 years. Most of his plays were New York centric-written. But his sharp observant eye and knack of capturing the situations and dialogue of New Yorkers made them maddeningly eccentric, but lovable at the same time, winning the hearts of all urban Americans. Who can forget the antics of “The Odd Couple”? Or the zaniest of situations where the toilet flushed upward and “black salads” were unappetizing restaurant first courses that one didn’t just dig into in, “Barefoot in the Park”. And the list of Simon ‘zingers’ as they came to be called was his hallmark. His comedy dialogue was sublime and actors couldn’t wait to perform it. He was a true son of New York whose legacy of being the most successful American comedy playwright ever; deserved the laurels heaped upon him. He passed in 2018 at the age of 91. The King of comedy is dead. Long live the future playwright kings and/ or queens of comedy who follow. Simon was one of a kind and will be greatly missed . . . and the beat goes on. North Coast Repertory Theatre of Solana Beach, CA has enjoyed much success with Simon’s plays over the years. Their recent “Laughter on the 23rd Floor” production, is among five or six memorable Simon productions that are still vivid in NCRT audience memories, and this audience of one as well. “The Sunshine Boys”, currently on stage at NCRT is another hilarious crowd pleaser. Wonderfully directed by Jeffrey B. Moss, it stars James Sutorius, and Lenny www.desertstarweekly.com

Wolpe as Al Lewis and Willie Clark respectfully, as the ‘Sunshine Boys’ with a winning performance from Bryan Banville as Ben Silverman, Willie’s nephew, lawyer, and agent, plus a fine supporting cast of Portia Gregory as the Registered Nurse; Samantha Roper as the TV show skit Nurse; Phillip Korth as Eddie, and John Tessmer as the Patient in the comedy skit. “The Sunshine Boys”, is a smartly observed comedy with edges of poignancy creeping out from its core center that is insightfully culled from Simon’s exploration of “growing old and grappling with the actor’s bane - that of not being able to get cast in a show because of one’s age. And it’s still an issue in 2019. The story in short, is set in the 1970’s in New York City, and revolves around two longtime partner/actor performers who have ‘retired’ their Burlesque act of 43 years. Al Lewis (James Sutorius) decided to retire without consulting his actor partner Willie Clark (Lenny Wolpe) after 43 years of performing their famous “Doctor” skit. The “retiring of their act” by Al was a one person decision, according to Willie. It’s a betrayal in Willie’s eyes. As a result the two men have not spoken to each in eleven years. Ben, Willie’s agent and nephew, has finally arranged for Willie to perform in a huge CBS TV Special honoring America’s greatest comedy performers of the past fifty years. Willie is excited by the idea of working again. For Willie, his life IS performing. The idea of performing is what has kept him going since the split with Al. There’s just one hitch; CBS wants the ”old act”. They want “Lewis and Clark” together as in days of old. Look, “I’m not doing the show if Al Lewis is involved. Period!” Willie roars at Ben, who then gently explains to Willie. No Al Lewis. No hefty CBS TV money contract for doing the old act just one more time. The beauty of this comedy

Lenny Wolpe, Samantha Roper & James Sutorius in “The Sunshine Boys.” Photo by Aaron Rumley gem for actors of a certain age, lies not only their experience and talent they bring but also in the vision of director Moss who seamlessly and intelligently stages Simon’s play; orchestrating the “master class” performances of Wolpe and Sutorius two pros whose exquisite comedy timing is flatout mesmerizing to watch. Wolpe shines as the wisecracking kvetch Willie. Sutorius delivers a finely judged, nuanced turn as the cool but cautious Al; not knowing what to expect from Willie after eleven years of not speaking to him. It’s classic Neil Simon. There are echoes of Oscar and Felix from “The Odd couple”, all over again but with a twist. If truth be known, both are unsure of the meeting and the outcome but both characters secretly still enjoy needling one another. In reality, they’re two

November 20, 2019

grumpy old men who are in need of the negotiating skills that Bryan Banville supplies as lawyer Silverman. That’s it. No spoiler alerts here. To learn how this splendid production turns out one has to see the production for one’s self. How these characters resolve the issues that kept them from reconnecting is the stuff that made Neil Simon world famous. His skill as a comedy playwright was nonpareil. The technical credits at NCRT are always first rate. And this production is no exception. The creative team led by director Moss features a colorful, wonderful, Set Design by Marty Burnett that is eye appealing and functional. Lighting Director Matt Novotny works his magic allowing for the costumes of Elisa Benzoni to be seen and appreciated for their spot-on 1970’s period.

The Sound Design by Aaron Rumley is top drawer, and nicely executed, especially in Wolpe’s scenes in his apartment as he putters around in his pajamas and bathrobe forgetting where things are located, and his inability to open the front door when visitors arrive is priceless. As the kids say these days, ‘growing old sucks’. The Props design is by Phillip Korth, and Hair & Wig design by Peter Herman, complete the creative team. The Stage Manager is Danielle Stephens. “The Sunshine Boys” is a fun and enjoyable evening in the theatre without one f-bomb being hurled from the stage, so it’s okay to bring grandma and the kids. The play running at North Coast Repertory Theatre, has been extended to November 24, 2019. It’s a Must See!
