Little Kaiden tells Santa what she wants for Christmas with the help of the Elves Story and Photos by Pat Krause BigHorn BAM, Behind a Miracle, celebrated its 10th A Miracle on El Paseo charitable event on Saturday, Nov. 18th. The event has gotten so big that thousands of people come to enjoy the night. Its a kick start to the Holiday Season with the lighting of the tall tree atop the roof on El Paseo. The area on El Paseo is blocked

Fred Fern and his staff have helped make this into a GO TO event of the season. The event has raised over 7 million dollars for the fight against Cancer. This year’s celebrity

By Desert Star Staff Indio, CA. -On the evening of November 18, 2017, the Riverside County Fairground’s Fullenwider Building was transformed into a scene out of 1,001 Arabian Nights. Twelve young ladies from across Riverside County competed for the crowns of Queen Scheherazade, Princess Dunyazade and Princess Jasmine. The Queen & her Court will act as goodwill ambassadors for the 2018 Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival, February 16-25. Crowned Queen Scheherazade was Keanna Garcia. Keanna is a senior at Palm Desert High School. She is involved with the National Honor Society, she also tutors middle school students and

helps freshman and sophomore students be proactive about college. Keanna loves the performing arts and is very involved with theatre and created the first Folklorico Club at her school. She plans to attend College of the Desert. Sianna Gonzalez, from Shadow Hills High School, was crowned Princess Dunyazade. She received a Royal Purple Award for accomplishing a 4.0 GPA every year. She loves being a cheerleader as the sport allows her to lead her classmates, not only on the sidelines, but as a leader in general. Photo by Pat Krause Photo by Pat Krause. Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 6th Annual Props and Hops Craft Beer Fest was at the Museum on Saturday, November 18th. People were able to enjoy a variety of beers and take flights on airplanes. Guests were given a small mug and coupons so they could taste the many varieties of beers and ciders. Beers included strong, mild, Mexican and beers made with apples, oranges and other tastes from 20 different breweries. The line for the

Orange and Apple ciders was long and other guests wanted to try all the different beers from vendors that came from all over CA to show their specialties. This was a chance to try a special beer that they could like enough to purchase in the future. A few local breweries from La Quinta and Thousand Palms gave people a taste of their beers and told them to go see the brewery locally. The beer was not the only part of the day. There was food

She has been performing since she was 3 and has great stage presence. She sang, Teddy Bear, a song with lyrics written by Joyce Bulifant and Music by Roger Perry. Kaitlyn Farley is another great local talent and she sang a couple songs. One song was a solo in honor of Joyce Bulifant and the other as a duet with Carr. Both singers have won

What Governing Documents Do (and Why You Should Care) By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Associations typically have five different documents which very much affect association living and governance. In addition to CC&Rs, most associations have Articles of Incorporation, bylaws, operating rules and either a condominium plan or subdivision map. Unfortunately, most homeowners in common interest communities do not read these documents before they close escrow. A corporation is created when articles of incorporation are filed with the state. earlier years, articles of incorporation often contained significant limitations on association and board powers. However, all common interest development associations are not incorporated, and those will not have articles. Not all incorporated associations use their legal name. The bylaws will usually on the first page state the association’s correct name and indicate whether it is a corporation. The Secretary of State can provide a duplicate copy of articles, and its web site will indicate if the corporation is still in good standing – visit www. businesssearch.sos.ca.gov. Bylaws, unlike articles of incorporation, are not filed with any public agency. Bylaws address governance topics such as the powers and limitations of the board, information on membership meetings, and board eligibility. Bylaws should not address the property, but how the corporation governs. The subdivision map

or condominium plan is the document by which a parcel of property is divided into lots or units for sale. It is filed with the County Recorder, and sometimes is attached to the CC&Rs as an exhibit. This document will describe what is common area and depicts or describes the boundaries of lots or units, and if the association has any easement areas or “greenbelts” over lots. Stock cooperatives and community apartments (also forms of common interest developments) will not have this document, since the form of ownership is different than in the planned development or condominium. Declarations of covenants, conditions and restrictions are typically referred to as “CC&R’s.” Despite the document using a different name, as long as it is recorded on all the member properties, the document is a “declaration” under Civil Code 4250 for the purposes of the Davis-Stirling Common

Interest Development Act. Declarations, or CC&R’s, are probably the most important and underappreciated of the governing documents. CC&R’s, once recorded on the property, are as much a binding contract on owners as their purchase agreements – even though the purchaser did not sign it and may not have reviewed it. Under Civil Code 5975, in lawsuits to enforce the governing documents, the winner has their attorney fees paid by the loser – so CC&Rs have more teeth than most owners realize. Association rules are at the bottom of the governing document pecking order. The law calls them “operating rules” (Civil Code 4340). Per Civil Code 4205, rules give way to the bylaws, covenants, and articles of incorporation. While bylaws and covenants are amended by vote of the membership, rules are modified by board vote. Rules must be written. Boards must follow a specific statutory process

when adopting, changing or revoking rules. That process is set forth in Civil Code 4360. Associations are required to have in place election rules, delinquency policies, architectural application policies, internal dispute resolution rules, and a schedule of fines. Homeowners should have a complete set of their association governing documents and should read them sooner rather than later (unless you like surprises).

By Janice Gough It is that time of the year that many of us wish we could return to the Good Ole Days! However, looming in our future days of December 8th, the Debt Ceiling will be determined. Remember last time, there was a threat to close down government if it was not settled. Our U.S. debt looms at $21.5 Trillion (106% of GDP), however if we factor in Medicare and Social Security, the True debt is about $30 Trillion. This debt will most likely be a problem for, not only, our children, but our grand and great grandchildren. Thus, at some point, we must control debt and stop the hemorrhaging of money. At some point, we must face how our decisions will affect future generations. Another development that few people are talking about is that the Tax budget still hasn’t passed. The Country’s annual budget was set at $666 Billion last fiscal year, which occurred about 1 ½ months ago. The deficit went up about 18% in the last year. It is possible that the budget Ceiling discussions in December could delay the tax bill. This delay could be driven out past Christmas into the new year, as it requires a conference committee. And since Washington seems “ at odds” on everything, it could take quite some time. Before a tax bill can be passed, the House and Senate bill must reconcile their differences. Without reconciliation, they would have a filibuster, which would mean that

they need 60 votes and to get a reconciliation, and a 10-year budget resolution would be required. This would be difficult to pass. The annual deficit is only likely to go up because there is no spending-restraints. The deficit went up about 18% in the last year. We will need huge tax generators to offset our Federal annual debt. Tax generators, such as, increased taxes on imported products and decreased tax for exporters, which could possibly raise $1 trillion over 10 years. In order to get world leaders to agree, we must speak out more about Caring, Sharing, and not, Impairing our Allies. Somehow, America must regain the Trust and Sound leadership to Acquire these agreements. We especially need strong leaders in the Federal Reserve, who determine monetary policy. As you may know Fed Chairman Yellen; Vice Chairman Stan Fischer; and William Dudley, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, President, will be leaving the Fed., thus finding the best and most knowledgeable leaders is imperative to our country’s future security and growth. The tax bill, that we pass will probably lose money, estimating the loss at near 1.5 Trillion. The revenue income generator for the U.S., is predicated on gaining better trade agreements and getting U.S. Corporate companies to bring the money left “off shore” in countries, for which these companies do business in, back to the U.S. under the proposed tax

law. By cutting Corporate tax from 35% to 20%, we would accelerate income, coming back to the U.S., along with the taxes due on it. With so many serious issues that Congress must face it may not be the time to push “Repeal and Replacing Obamacare”, the NAFTA trade agreement, OR “the Wall” (which I would put this as last on my priority list!) These are very complex and serious issues, which must be done right to Cut costs and keep services available at affordable prices as we strengthen and build our Allies in the World. By Repealing NAFTA, it would greatly affect agriculture, causing more inflation. We rely on our Hispanic Neighbors, much more than you think, and this change in trade agreements with Mexico

could create other problems such as Retaliation over Trade Agreements. A retaliation would cause the cost of Imports to the U.S. to increase and thus increasing the costs of goods sold in the U.S. This would cause huge inflation. Considering the commodities which we import for building alone, a retaliation could place us in deeper debt. I have been told that when you are in a hole and can’t get out, Stop Digging! Stay tuned for what the outcome of the Debt Ceiling will be.

Bitcoin smashes new all-time high of $8,200

By Desert Star Staff The world’s most popular cryptocurrency has surpassed $8,200 on Monday, setting another record high. Bitcoin is up almost 850 percent this year. November has been an extremely volatile month for bitcoin. Earlier this month, the digital currency price fell to $5,500 after developers scrapped the SegWit2X update, leading some miners and investors to shift to offshoot bitcoin cash.

However, bitcoin returned to growth on news that the Chicago Mercantile Exchange would start trading futures on the digital currency. The cryptocurrencies have also been boosted by interest from institutional investors. Goldman Sachs and Citigroup have said they are researching cryptocurrencies and the blockchain technology that underlies them and may add them to their portfolio. In addition to the skyrocketing price of bitcoin,

the total money transferred on the network per day has seen a 1000 percent surge this year and now totals $2 billion. Bitcoin started the year just above $1,000, and the overall growth now is approaching 850 percent. The cryptocurrency’s market capitalization has reached $137 billion. That makes bitcoin more valuable than major corporations like Siemens, Mastercard, British American Tobacco or McDonald’s.

By Desert Star Staff RICHMOND, Va. -- Analysts say the tax bill moving quickly through Congress benefits corporations, rich professionals and wealthy families at the expense of the national deficit and, ultimately, everyone else. Republicans have promised that the tax bill will raise wages. But they admit the bill would cost $1.5 trillion over ten years. By the time it’s fully implemented, 80 percent of that would be going to pay for a big corporate tax cut, a slashing of the estate tax and a cut in taxes on pass-through income. Howard Gleckman, senior fellow at the Urban/ Brookings Tax Policy Center, pointed out that those tax cuts for businesses and rich households are permanent, while the benefits for the

middle class will expire. “For high-income people, it’s all about business taxes and corporate taxes, and of course the estate tax,” Gleckman said. “And in fact, the winners and losers change over time, and actually you get more losers as time goes on.” Republican leaders in the Senate are pushing to rush the bill through, hoping to have it done within a few weeks. Pass-through income is money made by a business that the owner - often a professional such as a doctor or a lawyer - declares as income rather than as profit. Supporters of the tax bill say tax cuts on this kind of income will help small businesses. But according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, half of pass-through income goes to the top 1 percent of earners. Chuck Marr, director of federal tax

policy at the CBPP, said congressional Republicans are already saying they plan to use the increased deficits to call for cuts in programs used by seniors, the middle class and working families. “As soon as the ink is dry on this bill, we’re going to see Republicans point to that debt, point to those deficits,” Marr said. “They’ll go after Medicaid, they’ll go after nutrition, they’ll go after education, access to college.” Marr said despite the “America first” trade rhetoric coming out of Washington, the bill would also encourage multinational corporations to make their money offshore by reducing the taxes they would pay when bringing their profits home.

Even ignoring the cuts to taxes on wealthy estates, analysts say the tax bill ends up helping the rich much more than the middle class and working families. (Center on Budget and Policy Priorities) November 22, 2017

Big Food’s Big Climate Cost

By Desert Star Staff MINNEAPOLIS — The five biggest meat and dairy companies emit more greenhouse gases than do Exxon, Shell or British Petroleum, according to a new report. And if the meat and dairy industries continue as they are, the Paris Climate Accord will be moot and a climate catastrophe inevitable. The new report is the first to quantify greenhouse gas emissions from the five biggest meat and dairy companies - all of which are global. The Minneapolis-based Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy is one of the authors of the report. IATP’s Climate Change director, Ben Lilliston, said the problem is systemic: the way animals are raised, processed and distributed.

“We’re not blaming farmers. Farmers and producers are caught in a much larger system,” Lilliston said. “It really is the companies’ responsibility to shift the way that they raise animals and the way they work with farmers and raising animals.” The industry says production is designed to keep food affordable. But Lilliston said policymakers must figure out how to reward food producers who keep climate change in mind. Consumers can help too by buying food from sustainable sources. Lilliston said dairy especially has undergone massive change in recent decades. “It’s a shift from sort of a pasture-based way of raising dairy cows or having sort of a mix, to really having

faster economic growth. The Senate bill would also end the individual mandate to buy health insurance, essentially repealing the cornerstone of Obamacare. Johnson, who is a member of SEIU 775, says he and his union saw this coming after other attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act. He says scrapping Obamacare and cutting Medicare would also mean fewer workers in the health-care field - and big changes for his client. “This is just another attack on Obamacare and if this thing happens, she would go in a nursing home,” he explains. “And we don’t want that.” Repealing the individual mandate would lead to more uninsured Americans and for those still insured, a hike of about 10 percent a year in premium costs, according to CBO analysis.

Could GOP Tax Bill Hurt the Most Vulnerable?

By Desert Star Staff On Thursday, the House approved the GOP’s efforts to overhaul the nation’s tax code. But some health professionals are concerned

the bill will lead to cuts in programs like Medicare. The changes to the tax system are estimated to increase the deficit by $1.5 trillion in the next

decade, and that could force the government to slash $25 billion from the Medicare budget next year, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

A cut that large would have major impacts on Medicare recipients in Washington state, says Darryl Johnson, a long-term care worker in Auburn whose client relies on Medicare. “She’s a double amputee,” he says. “She uses pretty much all of the services. She uses Hopelink to get to the doctor appointments and to dialysis, where she goes three days a week. All her equipment is through Medicare.” Because of another law, the “Pay-As-You-Go Act,” the government must make up for any increase in the deficit. If the tax bill passes, cuts could be waived, although that would require 60 “yes” votes in the Senate. The Senate’s version of the tax bill could be voted out of committee as soon as Friday. Its supporters say tax cuts will lead to

By Desert Star Staff HARRISBURG, Pa. – A bill drafted by high school students that would designate the Eastern hellbender as Pennsylvania’s state amphibian has been approved by the state Senate. The hellbender is the largest salamander in North America and it needs cold, clear, swift-running water to survive. But development along rivers and streams has degraded the hellbender’s habitat and sharply reduced its numbers. Emily Thorpe, who coordinates the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Student Leadership Council, says the bill would do more than recognize a distinctive species

native to Pennsylvania. “It’s really about highlighting the importance of preserving and protecting clean water in the state of Pennsylvania - for not only hellbenders, but all the other creatures that rely on it as well,” she explains. Senate Bill 658 passed in the state Senate on Wednesday and now will be taken up by the House. Hellbenders absorb oxygen from the water through their skin. But Thorpe points out that the removal of streamside trees has increased the amount of sediment washing into waterways - which compromises the habitat for hellbenders.

“Sedimentation has really made it difficult for hellbenders to reproduce in our streams, and it’s limited the amount of large nesting rocks that they can use for reproduction,” she says. She says trees also provide shade that helps keep the water cool. Thorpe adds that the students studied hellbenders extensively, and wrote the first draft of the bill designating it as the official state amphibian. “It’s a great opportunity to not only highlight the importance of clean water in Pennsylvania, but also the ability for students to have a voice in our Legislature and to enact real change in their communities,” she adds.

Unfortunate Cautionary Tale of Poverty in Maine

In Maine, 100,000 fewer people are getting assistance with food, shelter or medical care than in 2011. (Steve Baker/Flickr) By Desert Star Staff AUGUSTA, Maine – The United States is making

headway in the fight against poverty, but it’s progress not being felt in Maine.

By Desert Star Staff ESCALANTE, Utah – Nearly 600 business leaders have sent a letter to Gary Cohn, director of the National Economic Council, urging the Trump administration to help protect their bottom lines by keeping existing boundaries and protections in place for national monuments including Utah’s Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante. Suzanne Catlett, president of the Escalante-Boulder Chamber of Commerce, says monuments are an economic driver for many rural communities. “As head of a chamber representing 49 businesses, I can tell you that since the protection of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, our local tourism industry in Escalante is growing, and it’s thriving,” she says. According to data from

Headwaters Economics, counties closest to Grand Staircase-Escalante saw a 24-percent increase in jobs - and real income jumped by nearly a third - in the years following the monument’s designation. After a four-month review process, U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke decided that previous administrations overreached their authority by limiting mining and ranching in protected areas. However, his agency received three million public comments, with 99 percent in favor of keeping protections in place. The Headwaters research found economic growth near Grand Staircase-Escalante was also spurred by more businesses and retirees relocating, citing the area’s high quality of life. Catlett expects to see that kind of growth near Bears Ears as well. She adds by ignoring

A new report finds that while poverty fell dramatically in the U.S. between 2015 and 2016, Maine’s poverty rate did not budge. And since 2011, the proportion of U.S. children living in deep poverty decreased more than 4 percent, but jumped in Maine by more than 13 percent. Maine Equal Justice Partners, along with the Coalition on Human Needs, released the report and policy analyst Joby Thoyalil warns that proposals on Capitol Hill threaten to push even more Mainers into poverty. “Look at the unfortunate outcomes in Maine,” he states. “Clearly, we have not been sharing in the progress that the country as a whole has been sharing in, and we would urge Congress to look at Maine as a cautionary tale.”

Food security is another area where Maine is losing ground while the nation sees improvements. And with Medicaid expansion just recently passed, Maine is not enjoying the same progress in the uninsured rates that occurred in other states because of the Affordable Care Act. Thoyalil says due to socalled welfare reform policies at the state level, 100,000 fewer people are getting assistance with food, shelter or medical care than in 2011. “100,000 fewer people are getting help,” he states. “It doesn’t mean 100,000 fewer people need help. In fact, we know that they’re not better off, we know that there are higher rates of hunger, worse health outcome and higher rates of children living in extreme poverty.”

The 2018 budget passed by Congress would cut about $3 trillion over a decade to programs that assist struggling families. But Deborah Weinstein, executive director of the Coalition on Human Needs, says with the country edging closer to pre-recession poverty levels, now is not the time to reverse progress. “We still have more than 40 million people poor in this country,” she points out. “There’s been progress for children, but we still have 18 percent of children living in poverty and that’s just not acceptable.” The Trump administration maintains the cuts will create jobs and boost the economy. More than 160,000 Mainers, including about 43,000 children, live in poverty.

to live here, and new home construction is at an all-time high,” she notes. “We have no doubt that shrinking these national monuments would harm our local businesses.” Another letter was sent in

recent weeks to President Trump from 360 outdoor recreation businesses, highlighting the economic benefits of national monuments to the outdoor recreation industry.

He says it’s convincing, because the caller ID says the name of the police department - and the person on the phone seems to know all about the grandson. “They go to Facebook - that grandson already said his name, what kind of car he drove, his girlfriend’s name, his parents’ name,” he notes. “That social media gives the caller all the credibility to make you believe that it absolutely has to be them.”

To thwart that type of scam, he says tell the caller you want to go to the police department and pay in person - or call the PD directly and verify the information. Other scam callers claim to be from a bank, credit card company or the IRS, asking to verify your birthdate and Social Security number. Or they might say you’ve won a car or big cash prize but have to pay a $500 “processing fee” to get it. Learn more about what to avoid, on the AARP Fraud Watch Network website. Abagnale says it’s also common to have a message appear on your computer screen, warning of a virus or malware. It can even cause the screen to flicker

or freeze and you may hear a siren. Then, it gives you a phone number to call. “Sometimes they say to you, ‘You have to let me take over your computer, and let me access it so I can get rid of it,’” he explains. “But when they go in, they take your personal information, your financial records, your photos - and then, they want to ransom them back to you.” Abagnale says the moment anyone asks for money or personal information, hang up. He points out that people are still falling for even the most common scams - and almost a half-million Americans filed identity-fraud complaints with the Federal Trade Commission in 2015.

Palm Springs Art Museum Presents Michael Childers

Having A Ball, On View January 20-May 18, 2018 Exhibition Explores Avant-Garde Personalities, Gender-Fluid Pioneers

By Desert Star Staff PALM SPRINGS, CA. – Palm Springs Art Museum is proud to present Michael Childers: Having A Ball, on view Saturday, January 20 through Monday, May 28, 2018, and shown in conjunction with the forthcoming Andy Warhol: Prints from the Collections

of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation. The exhibition features images of anonymous merrymakers at the 1975 Los Angeles drag ball, “Flaming Creatures,” as well as portraits of the enigmatic Warhol and members of his famous New York studio, The Factory. Best known for his

celebrity portraiture, Childers brought the same sensitivity to the avant-garde personalities experimenting with gender play at “Flaming Creatures.” These striking black-andwhite images anticipate the current culture of transgender awareness and gender fluidity. Through Childers’ penetrating lens, these figures radiate a cheeky playfulness as they experiment with makeup, wedding dresses, tuxedos, and feather boas to expose the artifice of traditional gender identity and the joy of self-expression. “This exhibition captures an amazing time and place – New York and Los Angeles in the 1970s – when people were outrageous and free,” says Childers, who maintains a home in the Coachella Valley. In his portraits of Warhol, Childers uses subtle strategies of gesture, props, and doubling devices to go beyond the inscrutable icon that Warhol cultivated, bringing to light Warhol’s complicated persona. Similarly, Childers photographed the avant-garde artists, and other creative and often flamboyant denizens who frequented Warhol’s Factory, uncovering the multiple identities at play when gender, personality, persona, and performance roles combine.

“Michael Childers pioneered a visual language that captured the potential of those who courageously used their own bodies as a way to expand our understanding of gender,” says Elizabeth Armstrong, Palm Springs Art Museum’s JoAnn McGrath Executive Director. “This beautifully curated exhibition evokes a time of free-spirit and creation, and enlarges our understanding of the cultural revolution Warhol facilitated.” This exhibition is organized by Palm Springs Art Museum from The Michael Childers Archive, and is supported in part by the museum’s Photography Collection Council. A key image set of 800 works from the 1960s onwards comprise The Michael Childers Archive at Palm Springs Art Museum, the majority of which was acquired by the museum in 2016. Andy Warhol: Prints from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation will be on view March 3 through May 28 at the Palm Springs Art Museum. So. Dakotans Mark Transgender Day of Remembrance

By Desert Star Staff RAPID CITY, S.D. – Monday is Transgender Day of Remembrance, a somber anniversary that recognizes transgender people who’ve lost their lives in the past year, including a South Dakota transgender woman murdered in January. The day of remembrance began in 1999 after the killing of a transgender woman in Massachusetts. This year, advocates for the transgender community will be honoring 25 people who lost their lives, the highest number ever recorded for the remembrance. Terri Bruce, a transgender man, says that’s a large and frightening number for such a small community, especially in South Dakota. He sees Monday as a day of reflection. “And it’s also a day to remember that we can’t live any other way,” he stresses. “We have to be who we truly are, and we do it despite the violence that might be perpetrated against us.” The Black Hills Center for Equality is holding vigils Monday in Rapid City and Sioux Falls. www.desertstarweekly.com

In recent years, antitransgender “bathroom bills” have circulated in state legislatures across the country. Last year, the South Dakota Legislature passed a bill requiring students to use the restrooms and locker rooms that matched their sex at birth. Gov. Dennis Daugaard vetoed it, calling the measure “a solution in

search of a problem.” But Bruce says these bills, whether they pass or not, have a damaging effect on the transgender community. “The legislation, all the anti-transgender rhetoric, absolutely plays into how big the target is that’s on our backs,” he states. Bruce says education is the best approach to greater understanding.

“That’s hearing from a transgender person what it means to be transgender, and giving people a broader understanding of all the variabilities in humanity,” he explains. “You know, there are over 7 billion people on the planet and to me, that means there are over 7 billion ways to be a human being.”

HOROSCOPES ARIES

Relationship interactions will call you to tell the truth, to ask for what you want and need, to reflect and figure out what you’re willing to give in return. Allowing nothing to happen, not providing information, not exploring and explaining desires and aspirations in relationships keeps everyone in the dark. True love is communication. Communication creates true love. Nothing else matters.

TAURUS It’s important to plan, create rhythms, agendas and schedules that structure daily living. It’s important that a routine be established, priorities stated, goals set and details worked out so you can achieve greater efficiency. Allow nothing and no one to hinder you from creating the essential discipline of preparing for the future. You actually know what that future will be.

GEMINI For months, there have been hints of a new creative process emerging. However, the time was not right, the season hadn’t arrived. There is a time and season for everything and Geminis are smart enough to know and follow them. It’s time to list the projects and visions you think about, choosing several to follow up on. Conflict turns into peace and harmony,

confidence into well-being.

CANCER Certain situations have erupted placing you between two different realities which you are attempting to balance. However, each day this becomes more difficult, leading to exhaustion. What’s at stake are values and you’re asking what are your values. Home has become a place where change must take place. You need sleep, rest, comfort, quiet and solitude.

LEO Perhaps it’s been difficult the past two months for others to understand your hopes, wishes, needs. Have you been lonely and felt misunderstood? Perhaps you longed for clarity, thinking it would never arrive. It has now. It’s just begun. You will no longer have to enter into silent retreat because of communication difficulties. Discernment was the purpose for the last several months.

VIRGO Have you been tending to finances, figuring out resources for a true perspective of your assets? Is something occurring at home, perhaps a state of anger or dissatisfaction, a sense of restriction leading to a restructuring of your surroundings? Are you wanting to run away from home and wondering if you have adequate resources?

Take a bit more time to reflect on your choices. More answers emerge soon.

LIBRA In the past several months a new vision of self has begun to emerge. You want to look a certain way that enhances your self-esteem, benefits your earning power, and creates a balance between who you are and how you’re perceived. It has been important in the last years for your desires, wishes and longings to manifest. Now that you have much of what you hoped for, whom will you share it with? Will you share?

SCORPIO That nebulous feeling of not knowing anything, even the time of day, the month or year, is slowly dissolving and with it comes a sense of knowing, once again, your true needs and wants, desires and aspirations. For so long you’ve heard yourself saying “I don’t know, I don’t know.” Allow surrounding circumstances to present themselves slowly and gently. Watch, look and listen, observe. And then be grateful.

SAGITTARIUS In these days of gratitude, it’s good to assess your true friends and acquaintances. It’s important to know whom to turn to for care, warmth and respect. So much has been in flux and change. You are beginning to understand where real support comes

from and what you can accept. Reach out and touch all that you care about. Surround it all with love and appreciation. The planets are entering Sagittarius and your joy increases.

CAPRICORN Everyone who comes in contact with you realizes you are a teacher, someone to be reckoned with. They realize although you can be the life of the party, it’s best not to cross, take advantage of, ignore or treat you unkindly. They realize you have values and principles concerning Right Relations and Goodwill. It’s good to list your likes and dislikes, needs and wants. Sharing them with friends and family.... creating a true dialogue.

AQUARIUS Many changes have occurred in the past months and many uncertainties emerged and visions you held seemed to melt away due to so many unusual tasks and responsibilities. Now there is fresh air and time to choose and eliminate and you can take a stand on the direction of your life and figure out what’s a dream and what is reality. Things, people, information far way seem vital and significant. Contact them.

PISCES Observe with interest and care what you do each day. Observe your thoughts,

timing, focus, goals and intentions. Do you know what you want and need? Make a list. Begin with what you don’t want and need. Paradoxes abound in your life. To be efficient and balanced you must stand in the middle, betwixt and between. Focus on small daily details. Complete tasks step by step. When larger life events appear, you will be prepared. Convicted mass murderer Charles Manson dies at 83

By Desert Star Staff Convicted mass murderer and former Manson family cult leader Charles Manson has died at the age of 83, officials confirmed. Manson “died of natural causes.” “Inmate Charles Manson, 83, died of natural causes at 8:13 p.m. on Sunday, November 19, 2017, at a Kern County hospital,” a

statement from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation says. A lifelong criminal and conman, Manson reinvented himself in the late 1960s, becoming a quasi-Christlike figure among a group of hippies called the Manson Family. Manson convinced his followers to carry out his demonic plans, which

resulted in the deaths of seven people, among them actress Sharon Tate, who was heavily pregnant at the time during the summer of 1969. Manson believed in what he called ‘Helter Skelter,’ a term he lifted from the Beatles song of the same name. Manson believed that ‘Helter Skelter’ meant the coming of an apocalyptic race war and November 22, 2017

believed that the murders he orchestrated would help bring about that war. During his trial, Manson insisted that he “killed no one” and denied he had ever ordered his followers to do so. Then-US President Richard Nixon said that Manson was “guilty, directly or indirectly.” In 1971, Manson was convicted and sentenced to nine concurrent life sentences. Mason was originally sentenced to death, but managed to escape the death penalty after the 1972 decision in the case People v. Anderson led to “all capital sentences in California to be commuted life in prison.” He spent 46 years in prison and was never granted parole. He was denied parole a total of 12 times, and his next hearing was set to take place no earlier than 2027. In September, Manson’s youngest follower, Leslie Van Houten – who took part in the murder of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca – was granted parole. The decision can still

be reversed, as California Governor Jerry Brown has about two months left to affirm or deny it. Van Houten had been denied parole 20 times, and it was Governor Brown who secured her further stay in prison last year. In the 1980s, he gave four notable interviews, during which he sported his now trademark Swastika symbol in the middle of his forehead, where he had carved an ‘X’ during his trial. The third interview with Geraldo Rivera focused on Satanism. This is arguably what Manson wanted all along – he was finally being interviewed on national television, having been dismissed as crazy and marginalized by the music scene in the 1960s. Reporter Linda Deutsch, who covered Manson’s trial, said what he really wanted to do was become famous. “So, he wanted to make a statement (with the murders) and be the star that Hollywood wouldn’t let him be,” she said. “And he was demonic.” www.desertstarweekly.com

The World Premiere of “Chasing Mem’ries” Lands at the Geffen

Tyne Daly as the widow Victoria reminisces about the past with her son Mason played by Scott Kradolfer in the world premiere of “Chasing Mem’ries” on stage at the Geffen Playhouse. Photo by Chris Whitaker. I might as well get it said from the top. “Chasing Mem’ries,” written and directed by Josh Ravetch, is an unbearable schmaltzy, overly sentimental, soppy play. Billed as “A Different Kind of Musical,” that is an apt subheading as this is definitely not a musical, but a dramedy with music and only the compelling performance by Tyne Daly, the grieving widow Victoria, will keep you from snickering at the hackneyed dialogue unfolding on the Geffen stage. The action takes place in Victoria’s crammed attic, which is filled with mementos reflecting the family history some of which include books written by her recently deceased professor husband Franklin, well played by Robert Forster. Other relics accumulated throughout their 57-year marriage include a high chair, a three-wheel bike, a two-wheel bike, tennis rackets, and family albums which Victoria rummages through and

sings an occasional song with Alan and Marilyn Bergman’s eminently forgettable lyrics, but interesting music by Bill Cantos & Mari Falcone, Dave Grusin, Marvin Hamlisch, Michel Legrand, and Johnny Mandel. Victoria’s son Mason, beautifully brought to life by Scott Kradolfer, repeatedly tries to get his mother to join the around 300 guests assembled on the lawn of their home for Franklin’s memorial service. Victoria has decided not to join the guests and continues to hide out in the attic, where the action begins and ends. Mason tries over and over again to convince his mother to join their guests, some of whom she doesn’t like. She seems to have a particular dislike for a guest named Thelma who apparently showed up at the memorial wearing pumps generally referred to as an invitation to perform a sex act on oneself and sporting a tiara. Although we never actually

see Thelma, we conger up a vision of someone dressed to go night clubbing rather than attending a memorial service. The other thing we learn about this unseen character is that she doesn’t have a pleasant singing voice and Victoria absolutely does not want her to sing Alan & Marilyn Bergman’s iconic “The Way We Were.” To engage in conversation, Victoria asks Mason, who is an astronomer, about his fiancé, who is an astronaut, and was recently

launched into outer space. She sent him a note from the great beyond that she is breaking up with him because he was at a conference and missed the blast off. What decent boyfriend misses his fiancé’s journey into space? The conversation then segues into Mason confessing that since his childhood was so perfect, and his parents so perfectly happy, he didn’t know how to cope with any problems that might come up in relationships that were less than perfect. What Mason doesn’t know is that his mom is having an ongoing dialogue with his deceased father who constantly appears and disappears, but not really because there he stands as big as life. (Perhaps some “mood” lighting might have rendered those scenes more believable?) Much like Noel Coward’s “Blithe Spirit” the only one who can see the “invisible” ghost is Victoria and when Mason reappears to once again try to convince his mother to leave the attic, Franklin moves upstage to be somewhat out of the picture. Victoria and her dead husband dance and reminisce about their idyllic life together with Victoria

declaring that she simply cannot go on without him. In a “win one for the Gipper” moment, Franklin convinces Victoria that she must go one with her life and after shouting amusing instructions through the attic window to the gathered friends below, Victoria musters up her courage and walks down the stairs to face the crowd. The end. There’s not much to say about the technical elements of the production other than if the script and lyrics matched Tony Fanning’s excellent scenic design, this could have turned out to be a really compelling evening of theatre. But then again, to see Tyne Daly reveal the grief and heartbreak of losing a loved one is worth the price of admission. The Geffen Playhouse 10886 Le Conte Avenue Los Angeles, CA 9002 Run: Tuesday – Friday: 8:00 p.m. Saturday: 3:00 & 8:00 p.m. Sunday: 2:00 & 7:00 p.m. Closing: December 17, 2017 Tickets: $25-$90 Students: $25 310.208.5454 www.geffenplayhouse.com.

Native American Leader Recognized for Environmental Activism By Desert Star Staff CARSON CITY, Nev. – Just in time for Thanksgiving, the Nevada Indian Commission has honored Native Americans who’ve made a significant contribution to the state. This year Nevada’s American Indian Leader of the Year award went to Fawn Douglas, an artist and activist with the Las Vegas Paiute Tribe. Douglas has been a big part of the push to designate Gold Butte as a national monument and now is working to save it in the face of a leaked proposal by the Trump administration to shrink the boundaries. “We fought long and hard for several years to get that designation,” she says. “And that was the voices of Nevadans. Not only our people but Nevadans as a whole.” President Trump reportedly

is planning to make an announcement about the future of Gold Butte and several other monuments in early December. One month ago, Douglas delivered a petition - with more than 90,000 signatures - to Sen. Dean Heller’s office asking him to support Gold Butte as is. She also led a series of public meetings on the monument. Douglas, along with the Native American Student Association at UNLV, pushed for years to have the City of Las Vegas recognize the second Monday in October as Indigenous People’s Day, something that came to pass last month. Artist and activist Fawn Douglas was named Nevada’s Indian American Leader of the Year on Satur“They said that Columbus day at the Governor’s Mansion. New 2017 Christmas Titles Bring Holiday Cheer

A number of artists have released Christmas-minded collections this holiday season, including Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band Cheap Trick, Renaissance revivalist rockers Blackmore’s Night, violinist Lindsey Stirling, singer Charles Billingsley and Los Angeles-based Us The Duo. Artist: Cheap Trick Title: Christmas Christmas (Big Machine Records) You might like if you enjoy: Cheap Trick, The Beatles’ holiday recordings Tell me more: A holiday spirit pervades Cheap Trick’s “Christmas Christmas,” but the bottom line is the 12song disc still rocks with the exuberance of any album from the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers. The material here is a mix of original and covers, all branded with Cheap Trick’s signature blend of power pop and rock ‘n’ roll crunch. There are highlights aplenty, including a Sex Pistolsflavored “Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want to Fight Tonight),” a flat-out rocking cover of “Run Rudolph Run” (think ELO on steroids) and shimmering choral-styled “Our Father Of Life.” Over the years there have been many covers of the Kinks’ 1977 gem “Father Christmas,” but Cheap Trick’s 2017 version is the only memorable version this writer has heard since the Ray Davies-penned original was released 40 years ago. Blackmore, the Corrs Tell me more: While the music of Blackmore’s Night is generations removed from the groundbreaking hard rock Ritchie Blackmore helped craft with Deep Purple and Rainbow, discerning music fans of all tastes will likely appreciate the Renaissancestyled sounds on “Winter Carols.” The two-disc set (the expanded 2017 title features three bonus tracks and is available on audio CD and digital formats) is simply outstanding, with singer Candice Night (whose wonderful vocals draw strong comparisons with Corrs singer Andrea Corr) using her winning soprano on moving versions of seasonal favorites including “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing/Come All Ye Faithful,” “I Saw Three Ships” and others. Information: blackmoresnight.com.

several strong originals on the collection, including the title track “Warmer in the Winter” featuring Trombone Shorty and the tuneful pop song “Time to Fall in Love” bolstered by guest vocalist Alex Gaskarth (of All Time Low fame). Information: LindseyStirling.com. Artist: Charles Billingsley Title: It’s Christmas Time Again (Crest Music) You might like if you enjoy: Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Michael Bublé Tell me more: Charles Billingsley’s delightful “It’s Christmas Time Again” is a bona fide trip down Memory Lane. Tapping into the traditional jazz and American Songbook approach spanning early icons such as Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby to modern-day singers Harry Connick Jr. and Michael

Bublé, Billingsley has the shining voice and artistic touch to blend artful music making with nostalgic yuletide cheer. The disc soars and inspires with an artful mix of buoyant material (“The Man With The Bag,” “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town”), powerful spiritual classics (a particularly stirring “O Holy Night,” “Panis Angelicus”) and more nuanced ballads (“It’s Christmas Time Again,” “December”). Billingsley closes out the holiday set with an excellent version of the Beatles’ tender “Goodnight.” Information: charlesbillingsley.com. Artist: Us The Duo Title: Our Favorite Time Of Year (Alvarado Records) You might like if you enjoy: Pentatonix Tell me more: Fans of contemporary pop will want to hear the first Christmas album from Us The Duo (the

moniker for husband-andwife Michael and Carissa Alvarado). The aptly-titled “Our Favorite Time Of Year” features plenty of infectious tracks, including a breezy take on Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime,” a ukulele-anchored “Jingle Bell Rock” (that showcases the couple’s potent vocal harmony sound), a playful “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” and a jazzy, reworked take on “Silent Night.” Editor’s note: Amazon Original albums and playlists are exclusively available to download on Amazon Music and stream on Prime Music and Amazon Music Unlimited. Information: Amazon.com/ustheduo. The 2017 holiday season has also seen the release of new Christmas music titles featuring Frank Sinatra, Herb Alpert, Sia, Gwen Stefani, Blake Shelton and Fantasia.

Artist: Lindsey Stirling Title: Warmer In The Winter (Lindseystomp Music / Concord Music) You might like if you enjoy: Lindsey Stirling, Pentatonix Tell me more: The firstever holiday album from Lindsey Stirling is everything fans of the virtuoso violinist have dreamed of, with the 13-track set featuring a mix of instrumentals as well as selections where she is joined by guests for strong collaborations. Among the stellar instrumentals are Artist: Blackmore’s Night Tchaikovsky’s “Dance of Title: Winter Carols the Sugar Plum Fairy,” a (Minstrel Music) swirling “Carol of the Bells” You might like if you enjoy: and Celtic-styled “I Saw Renaissance music, Ritchie Three Ships.” There are

Trump declares North Korea state sponsor of terrorism By Desert Star Staff President Donald Trump has declared North Korea a state sponsor of terrorism. The designation will impose further penalties on Pyongyang. “Today the United States is designating North Korea a state sponsor of terrorism,” Trump declared from the White House on Monday. “It should have happened a long time ago, should have happened years ago.” “In addition to threatening the world with nuclear devastation, North Korea has supported international acts of terrorism including assassinations on foreign soil,” Trump added. The US has accused Pyongyang of killing North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s estranged half-brother in a Malaysian airport this year, declaring it an act of terrorism. “The North Korean regime must be lawful, must end its nuclear ballistic missile development and cease

all support for international terrorism, which it is not doing,” remarked Trump, sitting next to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. The president also brought up the case of Otto Warmbier, an American student who was arrested and sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment with hard labor while visiting North Korea as a tourist in January 2016. Warmbier was convicted of attempted theft. One month after his sentencing, he suffered a severe neurological injury and was in a comatose state for 17 months. Diplomatic efforts led to his release in June, but he died six days later. US officials blame North Korea for his death. “This designation will impose further sanctions and penalties on North Korea and related persons, and supports our massive pressure campaign to isolate the murderous regime you’ve all been reading about and in some cases, writing about,” Trump said.

The Treasury Department will announce additional sanctions against Pyongyang on Tuesday. North Korea already faces a barrage of UN sanctions, including restrictions on fuel imports and guest workers. Washington has pushed for diplomatic isolation of Pyongyang, citing

North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile tests as a threat to the entire world. In September, the Trump administration sanctioned eight North Korean banks and 26 individuals said to act as their representatives in various countries, including China, Russia, Libya and

the United Arab Emirates. A week prior, Trump signed an executive order targeting North Korea’s access to the international banking system. Before North Korea’s designation, the countries the US considered state sponsors of terrorism were Iran, Sudan and Syria.

Petersen says the purpose of Florida’s nationally recognized open government laws is to provide citizens with an opportunity to oversee government. She says gaining access to public records is not just a role for media organizations. Average citizens also should be making demands for transparency. “You just have to know sort of how to make your request, and I think one thing that people can do is make the request, push back against it,” she states. “As I said, the foundation will help, to the best of our ability, give you information and advice and guidance.” The foundation’s tollfree hotline for answers and assistance regarding public records and Florida’s sunshine laws is (800) 337-3518.

to see Republicans point to that debt, point to those deficits,” he explains. “They’ll go after Medicaid, they’ll go after nutrition, they’ll go after education, access to college.” Marr says despite the “America first” trade rhetoric coming out of Washington, the bill would also encourage multinational corporations to make their money offshore by reducing the taxes they would pay when bringing their profits home.

Using Social Media to Hold Public Officials Accountable

By Desert Star Staff Social media is for more than just keeping in touch with friends and family and sharing funny memes. It also

can be used to hold a public official’s feet to the fire. Open government advocates are urging people to adjust to

modern communication by doing more with their social media accounts. Speaking on The Rotunda podcast, Barbara

Petersen, president of the First Amendment Foundation, says everyone should be following his or her elected representatives and engage with them in person and online. “Ask questions,” she urges. “Make your voice heard. That’s not hard anymore. “It used to be hard because the only way to really do it was to write a letter, call your city commission. I don’t know if you’ve tried to call Congress lately but you never get through, but now you’ve got social media.” According to a study by the Pew Research Center, 66 percent of social media users in the U.S. have engaged in civic or political activities through social media, with methods such as encouraging others to vote and liking, posting or commenting on politically related content.

By Desert Star Staff PHOENIX – Analysts say the tax bill moving quickly through Congress benefits corporations, rich professionals and wealthy families - at the expense of the deficit and ultimately everyone else. Republicans have promised that the tax bill would raise wages. But they admit the bill would cost $1.5 trillion over ten years. By the time it’s fully implemented, 80 percent of that would be going to pay for a big corporate tax cut, a slashing of the

estate tax and a cut in taxes on pass-through income. Howard Gleckman, a senior fellow at the Urban/ Brookings Tax Policy Center, says those tax cuts for businesses and rich households are permanent, while the parts that help the middle class expire. “For high-income people, it’s all about business taxes and corporate taxes, and of course the estate tax,” he says. “And in fact, the winners and losers change over time, and actually you get more losers as time goes on.”

Republican leaders in the Senate are pushing to rush the bill through, hoping to have it done within a few weeks. The bill eliminates the ability to deduct what you pay in state and local taxes off your income - a deduction currently used by 21 percent of Arizonans, to collectively save about $4 million. Pass-through income is money made by a business that the owner - often a professional such as a doctor or a lawyer - declares as income rather than as profit. Supporters of the

tax bill point to this as helping small businesses. But, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, half of pass-through income goes to the top one percent. Chuck Marr, the director of federal tax policy at the think tank, says congressional Republicans are already saying they plan to use the increased deficits to call for cuts in programs used by seniors, the middle class and working families. “As soon as the ink is dry on this bill, we’re going

Capitol Records Continues Celebration Of 75th Anniversary

By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES, CA. Capitol Records’ celebration of its 75th anniversary continues with the release of A Capitol Christmas Volume 2, a collection of 24 timeless holiday and seasonal classics sung by the label’s unmatched list of legends. Available now digitally and on 2CD, and December 1 as a double LP in gatefold cover, the album brings together some of pop music’s most iconic holiday songs with extremely rare recordings originally issued in very limited release. Volume 2’s list of singers includes Glen Campbell, The Beach Boys, Wayne Newton, Lena Horne, Dinah Shore, Nancy Wilson, Johnny Mercer, The Louvin Brothers and many more, with each contribution lovingly chronicled in liner notes provided by compilation producer Jay Landers. Tonight, the historic Capitol Records Tree atop the iconic Capitol Records building will be lit at sundown for the 59th time, ushering in the holiday season in Hollywood. Designed by Ollsen Lighting and featuring more than 4,373 bulbs, the tree has been a part of the Los Angeles skyline each December since 1958. A fitting companion to last year’s timeless collection, A Capitol Christmas Volume 2 continues to mine Capitol’s deep reservoir of holiday and seasonal standards sung by millions of celebrants each winter. The album features Wayne Newton’s jubilant takes on the rockabilly Christmas classic “Jingle Bell Rock” and perennial favorite “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” both originally released in 1966 on his first holiday album, Songs For A Merry Christmas, three years after his debut record on Capitol. Glen Campbell was one of Capitol’s most iconic stars of the ‘60s and ‘70s, recording a remarkable 40 albums for the label. In 1968, on the heels of a string of hit albums – the Grammy Award-winning By The Time I Get To Phoenix and

By Desert Star Staff The Trump administration has filed a civil antitrust lawsuit to block AT&T from acquiring Time Warner for $85.4 billion, a deal that would give the largest world’s largest telecommunications company control of CNN. The Justice Department announced Monday it will be challenging the AT&TTime Warner merger, one of the largest mergers in American history, arguing the combined company would raise prices and stifle competition and innovation. Makan Delrahim, the assistant attorney general for the DOJ’s antitrust division, said the potential merger would be illegal. “AT&T/DirecTV’s combination with Time Warner is unlawful, and absent an adequate remedy that would fully prevent the harms this merger would cause, the only appropriate action for the Department of Justice is to seek an injunction from a federal judge blocking the entire

transaction,” Delrahim said. According to the complaint filed in the US District Court for the District of Columbia, the merger would give the combined company “a weapon to harm competition.” “AT&T/DirecTV would hinder its rivals by forcing them to pay hundreds of millions of dollars more per year for Time Warner’s networks, and it would use its increased power to slow the industry’s transition to new and exciting video distribution models that provide greater choice for consumers.” AT&T, the second largest wireless telephone company in the US, agreed to buy Time Warner, which owns HBO, CNN, Warner Brothers, DC Comics, TBS, TNT, the Cartoon Network and broadcast rights to many live sporting events, for $85.4 billion in October 2016. The deal between Time Warner and AT&T is known as a “vertical merger,” which combines two companies that do not compete. Since

DOJ sues to prevent AT&T-Time Warner merger AT&T distributes content and Time Warner creates content, AT&T’s legal counsel David McAtee, said that the deal is totally legal and the lawsuit challenging the merger is “a radical and inexplicable departure from decades of antitrust precedent.” “Vertical mergers like this one are routinely approved because they benefit consumers without removing any competitor from the market. We see no legitimate reason for our merger to be treated differently,” McAtee said in a statement after the lawsuit was filed. However, many were quick to criticize the deal, including President Donald Trump, who made the merger a campaign issue during the election last year. During the campaign, then-candidate Trump said that the merger between AT&T and Time Warner would put “too much concentration of power in the hands of too few.” “Deals like this destroy democracy,” Trump said

in October 2016. Trump has had a longstanding feud with CNN over their coverage of him, and he has repeatedly called them out as “fake news.” At a press conference Monday, AT&T CEO Randall Stevens was asked if the DOJ filed the lawsuit because of Trump’s animosity to CNN. “There’s been a lot of reporting and speculation of whether this is all about CNN, and frankly, I don’t know,” Stevens said. “But nobody should be surprised that the question keeps coming up because we’ve witnessed such an abrupt change in the application of antitrust law here.” Stevens said the company is not required to divest any assets from Time Warner or AT&T, adding that any agreement which would cause the company to give up control of CNN would be a “nonstarter.” Stevens said that AT&T is ready to challenge the lawsuit in court. “We have no intention

of backing down from the government’s lawsuit,” Stevens said. “We are in this to win, and absent a reasonable compromise that doesn’t violate our principles, we expect to do just that.” Daniel Petrocelli, the lead trial counsel for AT&T and Time Warner, said that the DOJ would have to prove the merger would harm competition and consumers to win the case, but he does not think that will happen. “If there’s any proof there, I’m sure it will emerge and it probably won’t bode well for the government if it does,” Petrocelli said, referring to recent reports that Trump may have influenced the Justice Department’s review of the merger. “Simply put, the theories in the DOJ’s complaint.... have no proof and make no sense in the real business world and we are confident that the laws and the fact will prevail and this merger will be allowed to proceed,” Petrocelli said.

Which Medicare Plan is Right for Me? Five Tips to Help You Decide

By Greg Wright CEO, United Healthcare Medicare & Retirement in Southern California For the more than six million people eligible for Medicare in California, including more than 356,000 who are Medicare eligible in Riverside County, determining the right plan this open enrollment period can be a daunting task. If you feel overwhelmed sorting through all the options, you are not alone. UnitedHealthcare conducted a survey this year to assess people’s understanding of Medicare and found that almost 40 percent of beneficiaries found the program confusing. By following these five tips, you can make the process of shopping for Medicare coverage easier. 1. Know the Dates: For most people, Medicare Open Enrollment is your one opportunity to make changes to your Medicare coverage each year. It runs from now to Dec. 7. Changes made during open enrollment take effect on Jan. 1, 2018. 2. Review Your Choices: When it comes to selecting a Medicare plan, one size does not fit all. You

have options. Take the time to explore them so you can find the coverage that works best for you. Start early and get your questions answered. Check if your current coverage is still meeting your needs, and see if your benefits will change next year. Also, make sure your medications are included in the plan. Even if you don’t expect to change plans, it’s important to ensure your drugs will still be covered next year. 3. Consider Your Care: In addition to providing access to care providers, you should look for a plan that offers the benefits that are important to you. Confirm your preferred doctors and hospitals are available through the plan you’re considering. Also, don’t forget about dental, vision and other additional benefits. Many people are surprised to find that Original Medicare doesn’t cover prescription drugs and most dental, vision and hearing services. But many Medicare Advantage plans do. 4. Look at a Plan’s Overall Costs: The cost of a plan’s monthly premium is important, but you also need to take other costs into account. There are a number of plans that offer $0 premiums. However, for some

people plans with a higher premium may actually be the most cost-effective choice in the long-run, especially if the plan includes more benefits and lower out-of-pocket costs. 5. Look for Value: Don’t assume you have to pay a lot for good benefits. In Southern California for example, there are plans available with low or $0 monthly premiums and rich benefits. Plans can offer the protection of low out-of-pocket maximums, $0 copays on tier 1 and 2 prescription drugs,

including mail order, credits for over-the-counter items, and additional benefits like gym memberships, comprehensive dental, chiropractic and acupuncture coverage. For plans with monthly premiums, it’s important to note that people who qualify for extra help based on their income could get the cost of those premiums covered. Grad Students: GOP Tax Bill is “Primary Concern”

By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE – Cashstrapped graduate students in Washington state and across the country are watching the tax debate in Congress closely. A provision in the House GOP’s bill to overhaul the tax code, which passed last week, would turn tuition waivers offered by universities into taxable income. Most students work as teaching or research assistants in exchange for tuition breaks. Sam Sumpter is financial secretary for UAW 4121, the union for academic student employees at the University of Washington. The union estimates this provision would increase student employees’ tax burden by $5,000 a year at U.W. Sumpter says at that price, students either won’t be able to finish their program or won’t be able to afford basic necessities. “We’ve had some people report that if waivers were to be taxed, then they would be able to afford food but basically nothing else,” she laments. “So I certainly think it would have an impact on just daily life.” Sumpter says the House

Graduate students who work at the University of Washington could see their taxes go up by $5,000, according to a student employees’ union. (Intel Free Press/Flickr) bill is many members’ “primary concern.” The Senate version of the tax bill does not include the proposal on tuition waivers. Senators could vote on their tax bill after Thanksgiving. Leaders in Congress and the White House say they are aiming to pass a bill by Christmas. About 60 percent of students who receive waivers are working in STEM (science,

technology, engineering and math) fields, according to the Department of Education. Karen Strickland, president of the American Federation of Teachers of Washington, calls it “illogical” to burden students in fields that many businesses and institutions are making efforts to boost. She says this proposal is an attack on higher learning. “This really is a sign of November 22, 2017

the intention to continue to defund higher education, close down access to higher education, and basically undermine the entire institution of higher education, weakening the working and middle classes,” she warns. Roughly 145,000 graduate students nationwide receive these kinds of waivers, according to the American Council on Education.

Insightful and poignant musical launches a new version

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Word on the street regarding the new, intimate, insightful, and delightful musical production “The Band’s Visit”, indicates that this small and compelling musical set in Israel, may become a sleeper candidate for Best New Musical and Best Female Actor in a Musical, come Tony Award time on June 10, 2018. Opening to rave critical reviews on November 9th, “The Band’s Visit” is not your father’s familiar book musical, like “Gypsy”, or “My Fair Lady”, or even the gamechanging “Hamilton”. This small, wistful, musical gem, features a scaled down, haunting musical score and lyrics by David Yazbek, which feature only thirteen songs. But those thirteen numbers plumb one’s soul when it comes to differences and diversity in the form of a seductive, Middle Eastern-set musical that complements the libretto written by Itamar Moses. The musical is based on the 2007 Israeli screenplay and movie of the same name. As an attendee to the American Theatre Critics Association’s (ATCA) annual New York Conference, we had the rare opportunity to listen to and then ask questions of the musical’s creative team on the genesis and the chronicling of “The Band’s Visit” on its journey from creative spark, to rehearsals, to opening night on Broadway. The creative team of composer/lyricist David Yazbek, librettist Itamar Moses, director David Cromer, and producer Orin Wolf, were candid in their replies during the give and take with the critics who tossed the team a lot of creative questions concerning choices made and choices discarded down the road. The Moderator was ATCA member Martha Wade Sketekee. Listening to the panel wrestle with the myriad details that have to be addressed; like constant changes and tweaks to the story, the music, the lyrics, plus the set designs, costumes, et al, it’s easy to understand why many plays and musicals never get to see the lights of a Broadway stage. Production problems, mainly dealing with budget issues along with theatres and cast availability are the main culprits. Most musicals require months of work and gestation before their Broadway opening. Last season’s block-buster musical juggernaut “Dear Evan Hansen”, took eight years to arrive on Broadway. “The Band’s Visit” story is sparse but compelling. www.desertstarweekly.com

Eight Egyptian musicians led by Coronel Tewfiq - a winning Tony Shalhoub like you’ve never seen him before - comprise the Alexandria Ceremonial Police Band who arrive by mistake in a small town in Israel’s hot, dusty, Negev Desert. Their booking to perform was originally set for a different much larger city in Israel. It’s late at night. And there is no transportation out of the town or any hotels to stay at, so the Band settles at a cafe owned by Dina (a divorced, sensuous, Marlene Dietrichlike, Katrina Lenk) who offers them lodging for the night. Overcoming ethnic barriers, some of the Egyptian musicians find diversion and lodging with the local townspeople. The Band, however, is scheduled to depart for the correct city and their culturalexchange performance tomorrow… but a lot can happen in just 24 hours. The power and appeal of this splendid musical lies in its structure, the insightful narrative and its understated performances of the fourteen talented cast members and its four gifted band musicians who bring a fresh paradigm shift in the shaping of the musical genre thanks to the personal vision of its creatively inventive director David Cromer. Rodgers and Hammerstein broke the mold of musical structure in the 1943 with “Oklahoma” to be followed seventy-two years later by Lin Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton”, that introduced another paradigm shift with the game-changing ‘Rap and Hip-Hop’ as a format for future musicals. The touching performances of the cast are solid all around, with Shalhoub, shining as band leader Coronel Twefiq. It’s a poignant portrayal of a dignified man grieving the loss of his wife and young son while still trying to remain engaged in life and to those around him. Lenk is a revelation as café owner Dina. She projects the weariness of an attractive, lonely woman, seeking a respite for just one night from the boredom of life in her small yown. And, she sings her life disappointments in a throaty, seductive and sultry voice that draws one closer to the on-stage action. It’s a star-turn performance. Look for her name as a Tony Award nominee come 2018 - and perhaps a win for Best Female Actor in a New Musical. A banal plot-line would have Shalhoub and Lenk end up as a one-night-stand and then move on. But Moses and Cromer, thankfully, had other ideas that worked better. The Egyptian band characters actually play their on-stage

Photo by Matthew Murphey instruments, and boy do they play. Ari’el Stachel on trumpet, George Abund on violin, and Alok Tewari on clarinet, and band members Ossama Farouk, Sam Sadigursky, Harvey Valdes, and Garo Tellin, in their musical numbers stopped the show a couple of times with enthusiastic audience applause. The set designed by Scott Pask, cleverly makes use of a turn-table that opens up the stage to focus on the characters in their various village settings. The

lighting designed by Tyler Micoleau, and the costumes of Sarah Laux – especially the band’s powder blue, military uniforms and the contrasting, somewhat drab costumes, of the residents are spot-on; again visually underscoring the differences of the cultures. The haunting musical score of composer Tazbek is in the capable hands of the musical team of Andrea Grody, Jamshied Sharifi, and Dean Sharenow. The deliberately slow pacing by director Cromer,

nicely underscores the ennui of small town life that is so essential to the show. One cannot escape, however, the comparison of characters grappling with the oppressing ennui in Chekov’s “Uncle Vanya”. Once, one gets on the wavelength of the performers, your enjoyment of this impressive musical will be enhanced. “The Band’s Visit” performs at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, in NYC, and runs as an open-ended show.
