Groups Push for Action on Huge Nat’l Park Maintenance Backlog By Desert Star Staf SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Time is short in this session of Congress, and conservation and tourism groups are hoping for a vote on a bill to address the massive maintenance backlog in the national parks. The Restore Our Parks Act is a bipartisan proposal to direct up to $6.5 billion in revenue from offshore oil and gas royalties to fix crumbling roads and buildings, in addition to electrical and wastewater systems at the parks. Marcia Argust, project director with The Pew Charitable Trusts, said parks like Yosemite, Joshua Tree and Sequoia are crucial to the state’s tourist economy.
“California receives over 40 million visitors each year to its national parks,” Argust said. “They spend over $1.9 billion in local communities and generate over 25,000 jobs each year.” She said the bill has passed committee in both the U.S. House and the Senate, but it still needs a floor vote in each house ideally before the end of the year. A recent study said that tackling the estimated $12 billion maintenance backlog could stimulate the creation of 110,000 jobs nationwide. Rosemarie Smallcombe, supervisor for Mariposa

Ivanka Trump used personal email for government work
NBC News Staff Ivanka Trump last year used a personal email account to discuss or relay official White House business, according to emails released by a nonpartisan watchdog group. The Washington Post reported Monday the White House conducted an investigation into Trump’s email usage and that she used her personal email address for much of 2017. According to emails released by the watchdog group, American Oversight, Trump used her personal account to email Cabinet officials, White House aides and assistants. The Presidential Records Act requires all official White House communications and records be preserved. Austin Evers, the executive director of American Oversight, said in a statement, “The president’s family is not above the law, and there are serious
questions that Congress should immediately investigate. Did Ivanka Trump turn over all of her emails for preservation as required by law? Was she sending classified information over a private system?” The White House had no comment on Ivanka Trump’s email practices. A person close to Ivanka Trump told CNN’s Poppy Harlow that “Ivanka’s mindset is there is no malintent, and she is comfortable because there was no intent to avoid.” “There was no intent to avoid government servers. All of it has been preserved,” the person continued explaining that if Ivanka Trump sent an email from her personal email to a government employee, then it hits the government server. That response mirrored the argument Clinton made when defending her use of a private email server when it was an issue during the
2016 presidential campaign. “The vast majority of my work emails went to government employees at their government addresses, which meant they were captured and preserved immediately on the system at the State Department,” Clinton said in a speech in March 2015. Trump’s usage of a private email account will bring comparisons to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, whose usage of a private email server instead of a government email account during her time in office was a central part of President Donald Trump’s campaign against her in 2016. Trump’s supporters often chanted — and still do, on occasion — “Lock her up!” at the mention of Clinton, and President Donald Trump has frequently accused Clinton of receiving special treatment because she was not charged for skirting
the Presidential Records Act with her email practices. A source close to Ivanka Trump told CNN’s Poppy Harlow that “Ivanka’s mindset is there is no malintent, and she is comfortable because there was no intent to avoid.”. “There was no intent to avoid government servers. All of it has been preserved,” the source continued explaining that if Ivanka Trump sent an email from her personal email to a government employee, then it hits the government server. This is similar to the argument Clinton made when defending her use of a private email server when it was an issue during the 2016 presidential campaign. “The vast majority of my work emails went to government employees at their government addresses, which meant they were captured and preserved immediately on the system at the State Department,” Clinton said in a speech in March 2015. The Post reported Ivanka Trump’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, forwarded all the emails he believed were related to official government business to her government email account. Lowell believed that would rectify any violations of records law. Peter Mirijanian, the spokesperson for Lowell and ethics counsel for Ivanka Trump, said in a statement, “Like most people, before entering into government service, Ms. Trump used a private email. When she entered the government, she was given a government email account for official use. While transitioning into government, until the White House provided her the same guidance they had to others
who started before she did, Ms. Trump sometimes used her private account, almost always for logistics and scheduling concerning her family.” Some advisers to President Trump were alarmed when they heard this news, the Post reports, because of the similarities to Clinton’s email use. Trump has called Clinton “Crooked Hillary” for using a personal email account when she was secretary of state. Mirijanian sought to draw a specific contrast between Ivanka Trump’s personal email usage and Clinton’s, by noting that she did not have the server set up in her home or office. “To address misinformation being peddled about Ms. Trump’s personal email, she did not create a private server in her house or office, there was never classified information transmitted, the account was never transferred or housed at Trump Organization, no emails were ever deleted, and the emails have been retained in the official account in conformity with records preservation laws and rules,” Mirijanian’s statement continues. White House officials were first made aware of Ivanka Trump’s email usage through American Oversight’s lawsuit, according to the Post. Evers added, “For more than two years, President Trump and senior leaders in Congress have made it very clear that they view the use of personal email servers for government business to be a serious offense that demands investigation and even prosecution, and we expect the same standard will be applied in this case.” Source: NBC Palm Springs
Community Health Centers Rise to the Challenge After Wildfires By Desert Star Staff PARADISE, Calif. — Community health centers are stepping up to the plate to speed recovery after the deadly Camp Fire in Northern California and the Woolsey fire north of Los Angeles, by providing crucial non-emergency health care services. But, she said, clinics are determined to overcome the obstacles and provide care to as many people as possible. Federally qualified health centers serve 28 million people nationwide. Valdez said the centers can keep people out of the emergency room by treating a wide range of issues that arise when families suddenly lose their homes and possessions. “Well, the type of things that are most common after a disaster like this would be medications to be refilled, asthma, sinus infections,

‘Bah Humbug’ and Ballet for the Holidays The gifted Tony-Award winning actor Jefferson Mays gives a stunning one-person performance at the Geffen Playhouse, Gil Cates Theater, bringing Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” to vibrant life single-handedly. Mays, no stranger to playing multiple roles in one show, was an absolute delight in “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder” where he played each and every murder victim with great comedic skill. Now in “A Christmas Carol,” he not only personifies Scrooge, but he also narrates the entire show giving voice to all the other characters from Bob Cratchit to the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and yet to come. The show begins as Scrooge warns Bob Cratchit not to be late to work on Christmas day. He then declines a holiday dinner invitation posed by his
nephew. ‘Bah Humbug’ to everything dealing with Christmas including donating money for those in need at this festive time. Next Scrooge heads home. Upon arrival, the old miser is visited not only by his late partner Jacob Marley but by the ghosts of Christmases past, present and yet to come. The dark revolving stage and incoming fog set the stage for the unsettling events that are about to transpire. Jefferson Mays gives a brilliant performance, ranging from nasty and insensitive to joyous and reborn. He morphs into each and every character in this evergreen Christmas story written by Charles Dicken in 1844. Now in 2018, this perennial, oftperformed tale remains fresh and inspiring thanks to Mays interpretation under the skillful direction of Michael Arden (“Spring Awakening”) who

Is Food-Inspection Privatization Driving Salmonella Outbreak? By Desert Star Staff MINNEAPOLIS — With Thanksgiving approaching, concerns about salmonella in turkey products is on the table for many consumer groups. A drug-resistant strain of the bacteria has made more than 160 people in 35 states sick and killed one person in the past year, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Steve Suppan, senior policy analyst with the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, said this current outbreak could be the product of 15 years of privatizing the U.S. Department of Agriculture food-inspection process. He said poultry plants can now determine their own line speed - up to 175 birds a minute - making it nearly impossible for inspectors to adequately examine birds. www.desertstarweekly.com
“The carcasses can have fecal matter on them. The fecal matter is the most likely source of the salmonella,” Suppan said. “So there’s, I would say, a relationship between this new poultryinspection system and the salmonella performance failure that needs to be investigated.” Minnesota is the largest turkey-producing state in the nation. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Safety Inspection Service has identified at least 22 turkey slaughterhouses and seven processing plants where tainted meat has passed through. But the agency said it would be irresponsible to link producers with an outbreak investigation when a connection between a facility and the illness has not yet been made.=
There have been 17 cases of this salmonella strain in Minnesota over the past year. And the CDC noted that for every one case that’s reported, an estimated 29 aren’t. Suppan said people need to follow FSIS’s recommendations to use separate knives and cutting boards for turkeys and not to wash them, as that could
spread salmonella. But, he also said the lack of a recall or further action on the issue shifts responsibility away from the industry. “It puts a large burden on the consumer,” he said. “And I would hope that the Centers for Disease Control would be alerting hospitals to the possibility of more salmonella-related cases.”
Suppan said workers handling wild birds also are getting sick, and that’s a big problem. “As long as the U.S. government does nothing but protect the industry, the industry is not going to feel any pressure to change its production practices - and that has to happen,” he said.

“The Understudy” pokes affectonate fun at the world of theatre By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) Coyote StageWorks co-founding Artistic Director, actor, producer and stage director Chuck Yates, confided to me at the closing last Sunday of his highly successful comedy production of “The Understudy”, written by Theresa Rebeck, that this has been his only directing assignment in the ten years the acting group has been in business here in Palm Springs. Chuck Yates is one of the finest actors in the Coachella Valley winning many Desert Theatre League (DTL) Award trophies for excellence in theatre. I still remember his awardwinning turn as Truman Capote in the Coyote StageWorks production of “TRU” at the Annenberg Theatre in Palm Springs in 2013. Whether he’s directing or producing, Yates and Coyote StageWorks has made an indelible theatrical mark in their cultural contributions to the Coachella Valley. When the Palm Springsbased theatre group announced Rebeck’s snarky but affectionate play “The Understudy”, I couldn’t wait to see what the Coyote
group would do with this ‘actor’s about actors’ comedy play’. It’s a three hander, meaning we have two male actorcandidates and one avenging female stage manager from Hell named Roxanne, who puts two male actors Harry and Jake auditioning for the role of the ‘understudy’ through their paces before giving them the okay to join the performing cast. Everyone’s nerves are on edge. The pressure to perform even in these rehearsals is intense, draining, and downright hilarious. Professional actors and aspiring ones too, will relate to the shenanigans taking place on the stage. I dare say, there will be a lot smiling and nodding of heads in the audience throughout this 90 minute gem of hidden agendas, bragging, prevaricating, and a form of “one-ups-man-ship” as a way of saving ones’ dignity yet still get the “gig”. In the world of the theatre, and Hollywood too, the acting art form demands that one never burns bridges, however, if you do, you do so at your own peril. Translation: the familiar warning: ”You will never work in this town again”, becomes thunderously clear. Discretion is, definitely the better part of valor. Wherever this play is performed its casts are generally first rate. I
haven’t seen other professional production company lists of cast members, but if I did, I still would be hard pressed to exchange this trio of professional actors for any who have previously performed the roles. David Youse, an accomplished actor, director, producer in his own right, brings those skill sets to his performance as Harry, a now struggling, aging Hollywood actor, trying for a New York theatre gig. It’s his way of trying for a comeback. But his history as a nitpicker and a quirky, and irritating, at times, performer, send messages that the audition/rehearsal process could become contentious. In addition, there’s a teeny-weeny problem standing in his way. Remember Roxanne the stage manager from Hell. Well, she’s the person conducting the audition/rehearsal and Harry is her former paramour who jilted her at the altar eight years ago. Oh oh! Fasten your seat belts. It’s going to be a bumpy night, as Margo Channing (Bette Davis) from “All About Eve” would say. Roxanne is brilliantly and wickedly funny and intensely performed by Robin McAlpine in a tour de force performance. Remember my comment referencing burning bridges at one’s peril? Well what
goes around comes around in spades; especially in the world of show business. Thrust into this hilarious maelstrom of how actors deal with such ego-driven issues is Jake, a smug, actor who already has the role of the ‘main’ understudy, but must now vie with Harry for the ‘stand-by’ understudy role in the event that Jake is unable to perform the role should an unlikely event occur. Actor Alex Best as Jake, is the perfect foil for both Harry and Roxanne to avenge Harry’s past behavior. And gain her favor for Jake. Roxanne can play one man off the other, smiling all the while as the men are caught in her revenge web. Jake is firm in defending his turf as the already accepted understudy. But ego is a strong emotion and comedy is the perfect vehicle to push everyone’s panic buttons. As good as the men are in this delightful, blistering, comedy, and they are very, very good, it’s the Stage Manager role played by Robin McAlpine that wins the day. Ms.McAlpine delivers a master class in high energy stage domination, pacing and timing, and it’s absolutely delicious to watch her work her actor magic on the audience. None of the above, however, would be possible, without the vision talent and experience
of actor/ director Chuck Yates. He’s an award-winning director who has directed other people’s productions, who now after ten years of not directing a production at his own theatre, can start planning for his next directorial effort. The wait was worth it. In the name of full transparency, I have to admit I love actors. Actors can do what very few people in the world can do. They’re carriers of the hopes and dreams of millions. They transport us in safety to the far corners of this fractious globe to tell the stories the world needs to hear. They inspire, they teach, they are necessary for humanity to cope with the lunacy we all experience while ‘visiting’ planet Earth. The Coyote StageWorks production of “The Understudy” closed last weekend (mores the pity) but the memory of a great evening of theatre will linger for a long, long time. The Technical credits and the creative team led by director Yates include: Set Designer Tom Valach, Lighting Design by Mora Wilke-Whitaker, Costume Designs and Wardrobe Master, Frank Cazares, and Sound Design by Randy Hansen complete the creative team.
