Statewide Expansion of Clean Energy Company SolarCity Brings New Facility to Local Desert By Larry Jameson THOUSAND PALMS – Indicating how local demand for cheaper, cleaner energy increasingly may drive economic growth far from California’s traditional economic hubs, San Mateo-based SolarCity — a leading provider of clean energy — announced this week that it has opened an operation center and warehouse here. The new Thousand Palms facility is one of 10 SolarCity is

opening across the state by the end of this year, bringing its total number of operations centers in California to 24. The expansion places the company within 30 miles of more than 90 percent of the state’s population. “This expansion not only allows us to spread job creation and economic impact to more local economies, but it also allows us to reduce our costs and environmental impact by decreasing drive times and

the western Coachella Valley are learning the importance of the water-energy nexus, thanks to the LivingWise Program — provided by the Desert Water Agency (DWA) and Mission Springs Water District (MSWD) in their service areas. The annual savings produced by students

Stock Market on Historic Upswing

By Kevin Powell With Standard & Poor’s 500 Index (S&P) up 29 percent for the year as of last Friday, 2013 is shaping up as one of the best performance years in history. Only 20 times in the last 123 years has the market topped 30 percent. (The last time it occurred was in 1997.) This is also the second-longest span in history between years with 30 percent or better performance. While we don’t know where this year may end up, history and the odds would suggest it will top the 30 percent mark by New Year’s Day. History would indicate that 2014 has a good chance of being another positive year. Out of the 20 times the S&P 500 returned more than 30 percent, the following year was up 70 percent of the time — with an average return

of 11.4 percent. Recent history is even more positive. Over the last 63 years, the market exceeded a 30 percent return nine times. The following year posted an average gain of 14.6 percent and was positive 78 percent of the time. Still not convinced? 2013 marks the fifth consecutive year of positive stock market returns. This has happened seven times

Internal Auditor Honored with Award Fred Dachenhausen Recognized as CERT Volunteer of the Year

By Larry Jameson PALM SPRINGS – The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians’ Director of Internal Audit Fred Dachenhausen was recognized as Palm Springs CERT Volunteer of the Year at the Peace Officer & Public Safety Awards Luncheon hosted by the Palm Desert Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, Nov. 26. Dachenhausen has been an active volunteer with the City of Palm Springs Fire Department

since November 2007. His involvement as a volunteer expanded to a leadership role within the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program when he became a member of the CERT Subcommittee in December 2009. The CERT Subcommittee members are branch leaders who help organize CERT volunteers within the city. During times of disaster, they help operate the Disaster Medical Assistance

Containers that provide vital resources to community members until first responders can arrive. “I am honored to receive this award — not as an individual, but as one of eight branch leaders who coordinate a volunteer base of 200 Palm Springs residents who are CERT-trained,” said Dachenhausen. “I am also grateful to have an employer who is so public-minded. I am one of several ACBCI employees who serve in a volunteer capacity, helping support the efforts of our public safety professionals.” During the Mountain Fire last July, Dachenhausen played an intricate role as part of the tribe’s emergency management team — handling documents and filing financial reports for the incident. The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians takes

emergency management and preparedness seriously. In fact, half of Dachenhausen’s volunteer hours are while he is on the clock working for the tribe. In addition, the tribe has its own emergency services manager, Margaret Muhr, and many of the tribe’s employees have received an extensive spectrum of training in emergency management, including the Federal National Incident Management System, in order to be prepared to lead our hotel and casino guests in the event of an emergency. “Mr. Dachenhausen has expanded his knowledge and skills through numerous Incident Command System courses, sheltering operations training and first aid,” said Palm Springs Fire Chief John Allen. “It is volunteers like Fred who make a difference in the communities that we serve.”

The program is designed to investigate and measure water and energy usage in homes while building knowledge of current environmental issues. “Encouraging young people in our area to conserve is vitally important,” said DWA Board President Patricia Oygar. “We know that by working with these students, we are creating lifelong water savers. We hope that this hands-on approach to water education will result in lasting impacts.” Sixth-grade classes at Raymond Cree Middle School (RCMS) in Palm Springs and Painted Hills Middle School (PHMS) in Desert Hot Springs are provided with water and energy saving kits to take home and install with their families. Teacherled, hands-on activities coincide with the kit installation, and families see immediate results. Earlier this month, both PHMS and RCMS received awards for their efforts in the program. At PHMS, the four teachers conducting the program are Joann Burns, Ursula Fabiano, Marcella Carbone and Eric Antuna, the school assistant principal. At RCMS, LivingWise

is conducted by teachers Beth Thornhill, Steven Reid and Patric Palmer. “We are proud to honor these schools for implementing the LivingWise Program,” said Russ Martin, board president for MSWD. “Water stewardship must be handed down from generation to generation. MSWD participates in the LivingWise Program because we believe that investing in educating our students today will create greater water citizens for tomorrow.” Along with a guide and workbook, the LivingWise Program kit received by participating students contains a high-efficiency showerhead, kitchen and bathroom aerators, a rain/drip gauge, a digital thermometer, a flow-rate test bag, toilet leak detector tablets, a FilterTone alarm, an LED nightlight and a watt meter. Students work with their families to install the products from the kit, reducing residential water and energy usage. “I think this is such a great program and my students love the kits,” said PHMS teacher Joann Burns, who has taught the LivingWise Program for the past two years. “The program goes right along with what I am teaching and provides great hands-on activities for the kids and their families to

The CVRWMG is a collaborative effort of the five Coachella Valley water agencies to protect the region’s water supply by working together on resource planning and management. In its first five years of existence, CVRWMG has completed the 2010 Coachella Valley Integrated Regional Water

Management Plan and has obtained over $10 million in state grant funding, including $1 million for regional conservation efforts. The LivingWise Program, developed by Resource Action Programs, supports California state academic standards for science, math and language arts. The program is nationally recognized for innovative design and its ability to achieve substantial and sustained water and energy savings by the American Council for an EnergyEfficient Economy (ACEEE) and Alliance for Water Efficiency

(AWE). It offers a family of handson education programs designed to increase residential resource efficiency and community awareness in more than 33 states. The proven and effective design provides the tools to form energy literate households while generating immediate savings in home water and energy use. Healthcare Enrollment Event a Hit

More than 1,200 eastern Coachella Valley residents were drawn to the WE Connect Health Care Enrollment & Resorce Fair. By Larry Jameson THERMAL – Building Healthy Communities, Eastern Coachella Valley (BHC ECV), in partnership with WE Connect, Covered California and The California Endowment, continued its efforts to help Eastern Coachella Valley residents live healthier lives at the WE Connect Health Care Enrollment & Resource Fair. More than 1,200 residents attended the event on Saturday, Nov. 23, at Coachella Valley High School — taking advantage of dozens of resources, including enrollment assistance into Medi-Cal and low-cost health coverage through Covered California. “Many of our residents face barriers — economic, geographic and cultural — that make it difficult for them to access resources like quality health coverage and care,” said Silvia Paz, hub manager of BHC ECV. “Today’s event was

a continuation of our efforts to empower our community and connect them with the tools they need to live healthier and more prosperous lives.” The event served as a launch for a $1.2 million outreach and enrollment initiative of The California Endowment and the Desert Healthcare District. The initiative funds efforts by six organizations to help residents enroll in, and effectively utilize, their newly acquired health coverage. Attendees used the WEb Connector, an online resource developed by the Intuit Financial Freedom Foundation, to determine exactly which programs for which they may be eligible and how to apply. Enrollment in Cal-Fresh, the food assistance program for low-income Californians, was also available for those who

qualified. Other money-saving resources at the event included information about affordable housing and low-cost auto insurance. Medical and dental screenings were provided at no cost, and free frozen turkeys were distributed to the first 300 families who attended. “Events like this are instrumental in reaching Californians and connecting them to affordable healthcare options,” said Peter V. Lee, executive director of Covered California. “Consumers get to ask questions and get in-person answers about how to select the healthcare coverage that is best for their budget and their medical needs.” The event was part of BHC ECV’s outreach strategy in a region that is heavily Latino and faces high levels of poverty and unemployment, and that largely

lacks access to healthcare services and resources. The event was co-sponsored by Covered California and The California Endowment’s “Asegúrate,” or “Get Covered,” initiative — a statewide outreach and enrollment campaign targeting California’s uninsured population. WE Connect, a program founded in 2005 by former First Lady of California Maria Shriver and now run by The California Endowment, empowers families in underserved communities to lead healthier and more financially secure lives by connecting them to resources such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, California’s Healthy Families Program and CalFresh. This nationwide campaign connects those eligible with the information and tools they need to access these valuable resources. The program has successfully resulted in helping millions of Californians through its community events, web-based tools, publicprivate partnerships and publications. Cellular Scientists Share Nobel Prize By Art Kunkin (Mr. Life Extension) Last month, the 2013 Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded jointly to professors James E. Rothman, Randy W. Schekman and Thomas C. Südhof for their discoveries of how cells in the human body transmit molecules from one cell to another in little packages called vesicles. In a large and busy seaport, systems are required to ensure that the correct cargo is shipped to the correct destination at the

right time. The living human cell, with its different compartments called organelles, faces a similar challenge. Cells produce molecules such as hormones, neurotransmitters and enzymes that have to be delivered to other places inside the cell or exported out of the cell at exactly the right moment. Without this wonderfully precise organization, the cell would lapse into chaos. The specific contributions

Schekman joined the faculty of the University of California at Berkeley in 1976, where he is currently professor in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology. He is also an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Thomas Südhof revealed how signals instruct vesicles to release their cargo with precision. and immune disorders. Südhof became an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in 1991 and was appointed professor of molecular and cellular physiology at Stanford University in 2008. Congratulations to these researchers for their discoveries, and for their shedding additional light on the intricate and everwondrous workings of the body. Art Kunkin, 85 years young, is a journalist who founded the alternative weekly The Los Angeles Free Press in 1964 and later became president of the Philosophical Research Society. Brew Tasters Cheer from Beer to Eternity

By Pamela Price PALM SPRINGS – The Palm Springs Air Museum was transformed into a craft beer emporium last Saturday, Nov. 23, during the second annual Props and Hops Craft Beer Festival. Over 500 thirsty beer lovers, hoisting 16-ounce glasses bearing the event’s blue-andyellow logo, visited a bevy of brewery participants (16 in all!) — with ticket sales benefiting the museum. The event was chaired by Lisa Slam, the museum’s director of sales and special events, and co-chaired by Brent Schmidman. Transforming an airport hangar into a gigantic tasting room kept the crowds moving along as a lively music group called Generous Thieves provided the entertainment. The Coachella Valley Homebrewers club promoted home brewing and craft beer, and brewing demonstrations — adding an educational twist to the festivities — captivated suds junkies.

There was beer “dry-hopped with saphir hops” from Firestone Walker Brewing Company, a “neighborly” beer from Wiens Brewing Co. in Temecula, an India Pale Ale called Lagunitas IPA from Petaluma, and a beer “dedicated to the craft” called Ballast Point. For those rapidly emptied mugs, there were refills galore. Palm Springs resident Allen Lechtman, a beer fan since the 1960s, found Redlands-based Hangar 24 one of the better brews, while event publicist Jeff Hocker cleansed his palate between tastings with Coachella Valley Barbecue’s delicious $7 tri tip sandwich. Ann Greer of the Palm Springs Air Museum was pleased with the success of his years Props and Hops fest — and she noted that it will return next year. Three cheers!

The event benefited the 100 Women program at Desert AIDS Project. Four men and four women, each paired with a professional dancer, competed for this year’s title. Like the popular TV show “Dancing with the Stars,” the event included judges, emcee and an interviewer. Judges were Toni Basil, “Legacy” Perez and Aiden Turner with co-hosts Gino Lamont and Randy Roberts. Each team had to dance two different dances for the judges. Dancers included Assemblyman Manny Perez; Heather Coladonato, CEO of Desert Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce; Katharine Johnson, President of the Palm Springs Fireman’s Association; Ernie Santora, President of 1st Community Insurance Services; Palm Desert Mayor Jan Harnik; Tony Marchese, owner of Trio Restaurant; Dr. Frederick Eko of the Plastic Surgery Center; and Valerie Powers Smith, a member of DAP’s 100 Women. Professional dancers included Britta Sperber, Tyrone Baker, Isa Lapa, Kelly McClean, Anthony Jackson, Kristin Staszek, Courtney Prosser and Dennis Gimenez. Dancers had about eight weeks to learn their routines. The 2013 winner was Manny Perez and partner Courtney Prosser. Second place went to Tony Marchese and Kelly McClean, third place went to Heather Coladonato with partner Dennis Gimenez and fourth place went to Jan Harnik and partner Isa Lapaj. Trophies were presented by Gino Lamont, Randy Roberts and 2012 winner Bianca Rae. Each dancer was presented with flowers and fans brought out more flowers at the end of the show. RANCHO MIRAGE – The 34th Annual Winter Wonderland Ball was hosted by the Stroke Recovery Center on Saturday, Nov. 23, at The Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort & Spa’s Ambassador Ballroom. The black-tie affair combined a fun-filled night of dancing with an awards ceremony recognizing six Coachella Valley residents. Those honored this year were Javed Siddiqi, MD, founding medical director of ICON and Neurosciences at Desert Regional Medical Center; Stroke Recovery Center Board of Directors member Harvey Gerber and his wife Angie; and philanthropist and businesswoman Donna MacMillan. MacMillan, in turn, announced a surprise honor for two women, Mary Sinclair and Susan Wilder, for their Stroke Center contributions. The evening started with a hosted cocktail hour and silent auction. The Wayne Foster entertainers provided music during the dinner hour and dancing followed before desserts were served. Beverly Greer, CEO of Stroke Recovery Center, spoke to the crowd about the care the center gives to those battling strokes and other disabilities for over 36 years. On Sunday, Dec. 8, Cabot’s Pueblo Museum will welcome Coachella Valley watercolorist and author Audrey Schumacher Moe for an afternoon of tales about famous visitors to the desert. As an author, Moe is known for her books “Beachwalk” and “Desertwalk,” which look at the cross-pollination and interdependence between place and animals (including humans) and plant life that live in the region. Moe will appear at Cabot’s at 1 p.m. to sign her most recent and mainstream work, “Celebrities in Hiding,” which captures the stories of famous — and sometimes infamous — visitors to Desert Hot Springs. They are folks we’d never suspect would prefer the low-profile, mostly bluecollar environs of DHS over the historical glamour of its neighbor immediately to the south, Palm Springs. “Celebrities in Hiding” was inspired, Moe has said, when she was dining at Two Bunch Palms Spa Resort and spotted Barbra Streisand at a nearby table. “Where else,” she wrote, “could Streisand have had dinner out and remain totally undisturbed?” After Moe spied Martha Stewart at another DHS restaurant some time later, she realized these celebrity stories would be lost if not gathered and written down. As she began interviewing longtime local residents about their encounters with the famous, she said, “Stories about movie stars and famous people exploded like popcorn in a microwave.” www.desertstarweekly.com

“Celebrities in Hiding” preserves the firsthand accounts of interactions with people such as Marilyn Monroe, Gene Autry, Frank Sinatra, Peter Lorre, John Travolta, Jennifer Jones, Cary Grant, Mamie Eisenhower and Al Capone. “They came to the area,” Moe said, “to hide out, help out and hang out. Moe holds a B.A in English and history from Lawrence University in Wisconsin and a B.S in art and design from Woodbury University in Los Angeles. Before she turned to writing, she worked as a teacher, librarian and interior designer. A resident of Desert Hot Springs, Moe lives with her husband, one indoor cat and a 100-pound Rhodesian Ridgeback dog. Like the celebs that came to relax and revive themselves, the builder of Cabot’s Pueblo Museum, Cabot Yerxa, came to the desert to reinvent himself. He began building his unique home in the early 1940s and continued working on it, using mostly recycled materials, until his death in 1965. Built in the Pueblo Revival style, Cabot’s is a Hopi-style pueblo that contains artworks, Native American and Eskimo cultural artifacts and memorabilia of early desert homesteaders. It is called Cabot’s Old Indian Pueblo Museum on its National Historic Places application and is also known as “Yerxa’s Discovery” by the California State Parks Office of Historic Preservation. SKY VALLEY - Bernadette Schwenn, 64, a resident of Fan Canyon in Sky Valley, was arrested on Monday, July 1 on charges of animal cruelty. Schwenn lives in a makeshift shanty with no water, no electricity and a pack of Queensland Heeler dogs. Last April, Kitty Pallesen, an animal advocate and writer received a call saying something

Alihodic left behind two children and an ex-wife. His son, Jens (Alihodic) Luschnt, 35, came to Palm Springs on Monday, Aug. 12 to search for his biological father with only a

newspaper article describing how his dad was rescued twice off Mount San Jacinto on Feb. 9, 2009 and then again on May 13, 2010. Jens, who speaks little or no English, was adopted by his stepfather at the age of 10 and only knows a little about his biological father from stories his mother told him through the years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to know more

Dating back to the early days of Walt Disney Productions, the story piqued the interest of Walt himself. And as they did with Andersen’s beloved “The Little Mermaid,” the company’s latter-day animators have turned the tale into something distinctly “Disneyesque.” Even though “Frozen” involves tons and tons of ice and snow, the film’s central theme is aglow with the warm

film power of love shared by two sisters, the deep affection a young mountain man has for his pet reindeer, Sven, and the endless camaraderie provided by a goofy-looking little snowman named Olaf, who observes to Princess Anna, “Some people are worth melting for.” Set in the mythical Scandinavian kingdom of Arendelle, “Frozen” fills the screen with snowcapped peaks, a majestic castle and helpful,

By Dan Marinelli LA QUINTA – Beating the highly ranked, Romoland-based Heritage High School Patriots (5-0 / 1st place in Sunbelt, 12-1 overall) requires perfection, and in the Quarterfinals of the CIF Southern-Section Central Division Playoffs, the La Quinta High School Blackhawks (4-1 / 1st place in Desert Valley League, 8-4 overall) were far from perfect. On the evening of Friday, Nov. 22, the Blackhawks proved to be far inferior to the Patriots at La Quinta High. Not terribly surprising, since the Patriots’ roster lists not one, but two NCAA division one-level running backs. Besides raw talent, the difference between the two teams was the combination of the Patriots’ offensive efficiency and smart play-calling that left the Blackhawks’ defense confused all night. Plain and simple, the Patriots were a better team. “It was one of those nights where everything for them went right and everything for us went wrong,” said Blackhawks head coach Dan Armstrong. “When you’re trying to stop somebody like (Limihai Hifo or Sione Takitaki), you got to try and stack the box — which is what we were doing and which left us in a lot of man-to-man. They just happened to call the right play, at the right time, and it seemed to be like that all night.” The Patriots got out to an early 13-0 lead when quarterback Brett Virgil caught the Blackhawks’ defense guessing run, and then found

receiver Evan Rodriguez open for the touchdown pass on each of their first two drives of the game. Just seconds into the second quarter, on the Patriots’ third possession, a 90-yard carry from San Jose State-bound Limihai Hifo set up a one-yard touchdown run from Brigham Young University-bound Sione Takitaki to extend the Heritage High lead 20-0. Knowing the Blackhawks had season-long passing struggles, Heritage stacked at least seven players at the line in an attempt to either stop the Blackhawks’ star running back, Vincent Guzman, from controlling the game or to force their young quarterback, Michael Avina, to throw the ball. With three and half minutes left in the first half, Guzman — needing to work harder than he had all season to penetrate a defense — finally punched in the Blackhawks first score of the night. Guzman’s touchdown cut the deficit to 17 but the Blackhawks’ defense had yet to establish that they could stop the Patriots’ offense. On the first play of the Patriots’ following possession, Virgil caught the Blackhawks’ defense guessing run again, and connected with receiver Chris Nile on a 60-yard touchdown pass. Now, losing 29-6, reality started settling in, and needing to advance the ball more quickly, the Blackhawks were forced to veer away from their safe running game and start passing. sports once again, did not show up. Avina’s second interception of the night set up another 88yard touchdown run from Hifo. Hifo’s breakaway carry capped a 36-6 scoring run that saw three consecutive Heritage High School touchdowns in less than a span of two minutes. In the final 1:11 of the half, Guzman would score the Blackhawks’ final touchdown of the season and the final touchdown of his high school

career. La Quinta High School was down 36-12 at halftime, and despite the extra 24 minutes left to play, the game was over. The savvy Patriots team dominated the entire second half, too. In fact, the Blackhawks only entered Patriots territory twice in the second half. Sadly, on both of those drives, the Blackhawks ended up turning the ball back over the Patriots. In the third quarter, Hifo put a final exclamation point on the game for the Patriots with another 29-yard rushing touchdown. Heritage defeated La Quinta soundly 42-14. The Patriots finished the game with 545 total rushing yards — 316 of them coming from Hifo. For what it’s worth, in spite of his touchdown, the

Blackhawks managed only to allow Takitaki to rush for 19 yards. And, to go along with his two touchdowns, Guzman added another 191 rushing yards for the Blackhawks to finish the season with 1,960 in total. Despite coming up a bit short in the playoffs, La Quinta still had a successful season. Finishing with a record of 4-1, the 2013 co-champions of the Desert Valley League reclaimed the Victory Flag by defeating rival Palm Desert High School. In addition, the Blackhawks won the Mike Gates trophy by defeating Palm Springs High School earlier in the season. The Blackhawks open up the 2014 season at home with a rematch against the Patriots.

Boys Basketball Season Ready to Tip-Off high school basketball sports

By Dan Marinelli COACHELLA VALLEY – With the football season coming to its inevitable close, prep basketball is just getting underway. The five-time defending Desert Valley League champion, Palm Springs High School Indians, enter the 13-14 DVL season as the championship favorites, once again. Indians head coach Dennis Zink lost six seniors from his undefeated team last year. Replacing senior Terrance Wienecke, who averaged 25 points a game for last year’s 19win Indians team, will not be easy. However, a team that has only lost three DVL games in the previous six years is not worried about finding solid athletes. The Indians will return at least five underclassmen: Nick Hernandez, Riley Hagar, Ray Mullen, EJ Coloma and Ricky Wright. All are primed to bring a sixth consecutive DVL title to Palm Springs High School. Legitimately vying for the DVL championship, along with the Indians, are the Palm Desert High School Aztecs and the Cathedral City High School Lions. The Aztecs, coached by Don Brady, have a solid team that finished second in the DVL for the past five years with respectable

records, each year. Last year’s 20win Aztec team lost seven seniors, but there should be no experiential drop-off because Coach Brady’s squad is bringing 10 seniors to the court in 13-14. A 13-14 DVL title for Coach Rob Hanmer’s Lions would be their first since 2008 — when the Lions went 27-2. The Cathedral City High School Lions ended the season in third place last year — a significant jump from their last-place finish in 11-12. The Lions are returning eight varsity players, including six-foot-fiveinch sophomore Alex McGrath from their 17-win team. The Xavier Prep High School Saints, the Indio High School Rajahs and the La Quinta High School Blackhawks finished last year in fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, in the DVL. The Saints, Rajahs and Blackhawks have consistently finished in the middle of the DVL for the better part of the past decade. Though none of these lower teams are expected to compete for a DVL title, there could be some rumblings from the Saints and Blackhawks. Saints head coach Mark Granger is returning almost every player from his nine-win team last year, losing only one senior — Griffin Smith. Unfortunately for

the Saints, they lost to Rancho Christian High School this Monday and are already in a 0-1 hole. Head coach Jeff Hepner’s senior-laden Blackhawks also

started their season on Monday, too, but on the right foot. La Quinta High School is currently 1-0 with their win over the Fontana-based Jurupa Hills High School Spartans. Except for the Rajahs, who started their season yesterday at the Desert Hot Springs Golden Eagles, the other teams’ seasons do not start until December. On
