The event was held again at the Special Events Center at Fantasy Resort Casino which has the space to hold such a huge event. Almost 500 dancers arrived to try to win one of the many dances for men, women, and children. The stands were full of family

Many of the seats in the area were filled with people who came to watch and who brought their children to witness the Indian culture. Lorna Luft Book signing Story and Photos by Pat Krause Just Fabulous Book Store held another celebrity book signing, this time with legendary Lorna Luft on November 17th. Lorna wrote a book about her mother Judy Garland and the iconic film; A Star Is Born. Her new book, A Star is Born - The Film That Got Away has photos that were given to her by her mother. Lorna found the pictures in a box, in a box, that she saw when she moved. These photos are part of the history of the film. They show many images
that were initially cut from the film Judy Garland was in. The film, A Star Is Born, was acclaimed in the original form but they cut so much out to make it 30 minutes less which took a lot away from the film and Judy Garland, The Book is an insider peek at all the behind the scenes, pre and post production, with cast members of the film. Lorna is an acclaimed actress of TV, Film and Stage, author, producer, award winner, a singer and more. She sings like her mother and half-sister Liza Minelli.
She continues to tour and has performed in the Valley often. She is also a proud cancer survivor. Lorna said there were five adaptations of the Film, A Star is Born, and she thinks that the one Judy was in was the best. She said she had over 700 photos and most are in the book. Lorna thought that now they did the 5th remake of the film, it was a good time to write her book and put out these photos for everyone to see. The books were sold out way in advance of the book signing. The store took orders
the new beers to taste. People were able to walk around and appreciate all the old planes that were out for display. Entertainment was provided by the local favorite, John Stanley King band. Seats were put out so people could sit and watch. Many purchased food and ate while listening to great music. DJ Alex Harrington filled in again this year. There was an In n’ Out Burger food truck, vendors selling pizza, Hot dogs, Brats and Mexican treats. No one went hungry I am sure. It was a beautiful
day weather-wise. What a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon in the Desert. Another treat for some was the availability to purchase tickets to fly in two vintage planes. The stand to buy tickets was very busy. Many people would stand by the gate to watch the planes take off and land with local people, many family and friends inside. This is a rare and exciting adventure to the people flying for many a first-time experience and a few that flew in one year ago while in the service.
for books for people who came to get a book signed. Lorna said she would sign each book and they would be sent to them or they could pick them up at the store. Many people were just thrilled to meet her and get a photo taken with her. A few brought her first book, Me and My Shadow, A Family Memoir, to get signed. One fan, Local
photographer to the stars, Michael Childers, spent a bit of time with Lorna going over all the photos in the book. They reminisced about the old times and the pictures from making the movie, bring back lots of memories to share. The book was coauthored by Jeffrey Vance, and Matt Tunia was the photographic editor.

The Age of Aquarius Foretells Society’s Future
By Janice Gough Most people remember the term “Age of Aquarius” from the 1960s musical Hair, but few people know precisely what it means. I have studied astrology for many years and use it to understand others and to relate to how our world changes. I grew up in the Age of Pisces and feel the rewarded in having lived in a different period. It was a much different world. Going forward, change will take place so rapidly that even our world today will look very archaic when we look back on it in only 5 to 10 years from now. It sometimes feels

like we are in “fast-forward.” When astrologers speak about the Age of Aquarius, they are describing a phenomenon that refers to the earth’s movement backward (or in “retrograde” motion) into the sign of Aquarius. The change to a New age, is due to a slight wobble in the earth’s rotation. An astrological age spans over two thousand years. As you may know, there are 11 other signs of the zodiac and the earth “retrogrades” in each one. It takes the earth 25,868 years to visit all 12 signs. If you divide 25,868 by 12 signs, each age will make about 2,100 years. We have just left the Age of Pisces, which marked the years 1-2000 AD. The Age of Aquarius could have begun before 2000 at the beginning of the Space Age which is referred to as the Dawning of the Age of Aquarius because of how the landing on the moon change everything. With this Age upon us, I feel that understanding the traits associated with this age and then actually comparing them with how we experience life’s changes, will provide us with a greater understanding of our destiny. Aquarius is a
sign strongly linked to new inventions, flight, and large groups of people or nationalities. The Age of Aquarius has barely begun, and citizens of planet earth are witnessing exciting discoveries about the planets and stars, as well as enjoying new technology down here on earth. Between the space exploration of Billionaires Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk, we could see colonies on the moon in the next few years. Hundreds of discoveries have come from just about every field, from medicine to biotechnology, fabrics, materials, food production and nutrition, advanced computing, and photo-imaging. On the 20 July 1969, we landed on the moon, which rallied the earth into a kind of global citizenship. This change is closely related to Aquarian influence. Aquarius is the sign that that represents the bringing together of the brotherhood of man. The Qualities of Aquarius foretell society’s future. The ancient astrologers thought of Aquarius as “the sign of all things that are newly invented,” which is why this sign and the Age of Aquarius is linked
so strongly to technology. Aquarius is also an air sign and therefore highly communicative, and gathering information, will provide us with insight into the new millennium. By examining the traits of Aquarius, we gain a greater insight into how we will interact. Aquarius has a strong need for independence and individualism. We are beginning to see this happen in our political landscape. While members of this sign can be somewhat idealistic, they are also very original and inventive. Aquarius is visionary and creative, but rebellious, too. Aquarius challenges authority, tears down existing structures, and replaces the outdated with something better. Thus, Aquarius can be capable of great extremes. This sign acts in rather sudden and unexpected ways, as a result of being ruled by Uranus, the planet of surprise. This futurethinking sign can often be a study in contrast. Aquarius needs distance and marches to a different drummer. On the other hand, it is one of the most friendly, social and gregarious signs, and certainly
one of the most humanitarian. Aquarius sees social wrongs and moves to right them, often through mobilizing groups into action. Unlike Pisces, a sign that works one-on-one, Aquarius likes to work in large groups and is generous and democratic in spirit. Aquarius is “one for all and all for one,” rather than elitist. Since Aquarius is a fixed sign, they are quite reliable when they make commitments. All these Aquarian qualities will influence us as we move more deeply into this new age. The purpose of astrology is to use it as a tool to help us live life productively and happily and to teach us to interact more effectively with others. We have many great things to look forward to.
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL The most important new legislation changing how HOAs will operate is Assembly Bill 2912. AB2912 began with the statement that its purpose is to “take important steps to protect [HOA members] from fraudulent activity by those entrusted with the management of the association’s finances.” Sponsored by the Community Associations Institute and the California Association of Community Managers, the bill received no credible opposition and passed both houses of the Legislature on unanimous votes. One very significant change is the new Civil Code 5380(b)(6) and 5502. These new statutes are identical in substance and so appear to be redundant. They require that before any transfer of $10,000 or 5% of total association combined reserve and operating deposits (whichever is smaller), there must be prior written approval from the
association board. This slows down the overly active board officer or lazy manager who would pay bills or transfer funds without bothering to obtain explicit board approval. One question is whether a manager could obtain permission in advance to pay certain larger recurring bills, but the intent of the statute seems to auger against this and require express permission for each individual transfer. Association boards should already be preparing for this additional step and talking to their managers about how compliance will occur. This statute does not only reference payments, but controls any “transfer” of association funds. So, advance written authorization is required not only for payments and withdrawals but also deposits and transfers between
association accounts. Civil Code 5500 has for years required boards to at least quarterly review the HOA’s operating and reserve accounts, the reserve revenues and expenses compared to budget, the latest account statements, and income and expense statements for each HOA bank account. This changes in several ways in 2019. First, the review must now be monthly, not quarterly. Second, the list of items reviewed is changed. Instead of reviewing the reserve account performance compared to budget, the board must compare the operating account compared to budget. Third, the check register, general ledger and delinquency reports are added to the list of items which the board must review. The new Civil Code 5501 allows boards to meet the financial review requirements without meeting. However, the review must be performed by each director or by a subcommittee consisting of the treasurer and another director, with ratification of this review noted at the next open board meeting. This also means that the longstanding indirect requirement of Civil 5500 that boards meet at least quarterly (to conduct
the financial review) no longer exists, and that the DavisStirling Act will no longer indicate the minimum number of board meetings per year. Finally, the new Civil Code 5806 requires that all associations have fidelity (dishonesty) insurance in an amount equal to at least the total reserve funds plus three months of assessments. The insurance must include computer fraud and funds transfer fraud and must cover the association’s management company if the HOA is professionally managed. What happens if a board and its manager do not follow these new financial safeguards? Could boards and managers find themselves alleged to be negligent if they do not follow these requirements and a financial loss occurs? Hopefully your association will never have to learn the answer to those questions.

Legal Battle for Underfunded HBCUs in Maryland Continues
Gov. Larry Hogan was the keynote speaker for the 2016 Honors Convocation at Morgan State University. (Joe Andrucyk/Maryland GovPics/Flickr) By Desert Star Staff BALTIMORE — A 12-year lawsuit filed by Maryland’s four historically black colleges and universities against
the state will continue in December, with both sides preparing for oral arguments. The four institutions Bowie, Coppin and Morgan
State Universities and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore - say they have been underfunded, while programs they’ve instilled to attract more
diverse students have been duplicated by traditionally white institutions in the state. This makes growth difficult for HBCUs, according to Mike Jones, an attorney repressing the schools. “This makes it more difficult for the schools to, number one, attract a diverse student body,” Jones said; “makes it more challenging for them to develop business partnerships of the kind that can bring in funds.” Earlier this year, the schools declined an offer of $100 million over 10 years made by Gov. Larry Hogan, saying the funds were inadequate and the issue goes beyond money. Hogan’s legal team said the financial commitment went beyond what the law required. Jones brought up other states to explain why Gov. Hogan’s offer wasn’t
sufficient. Mississippi agreed to pay its three HBCUs $500 million over 20 years after a Supreme Court desegregation decision in 1992. Jones said the case must be resolved soon. He said the lack of resources has made it difficult for students to be successful on their own campuses. And it has led them, in some cases, to traditionally white institutions, or TWIs. “Students at the HBCUs, because the libraries were inadequate, they would have to go over to one of the TWIs,” he said. “For example, sometimes the people from Coppin would go over to UMBC.” Oral arguments are set for December 11, with the Circuit Court expected to make a decision on further action within the following few months.
Groups Claim Proposed Green-Card Rules Favor Wealthy Immigrants By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Today is National Public Comment Day - part of a campaign responding to President Donald Trump’s proposal to make it harder for working-class, legal immigrants to get a green card. Only three weeks are left to register your opinion on the “public charge rule” that would weigh recent reliance on MediCal, Cal Fresh, Medicare Part D or Section 8 housing vouchers against those applying to remain in the country. Carolina Gamero, senior communications specialist with the California Immigrant Policy Center, said the regulation would lead to more suffering. “Families will go without food, without health care, without housing support,” Gamero said. “It really makes this country sicker and poorer and it really cuts away at economic mobility and
prosperity in this country.” Other factors that would count against applicants with the new proposal include being a senior, having multiple children, poor English-language skills, limited education and poor credit history. It also would favor wealthier immigrants who make more than $62,000 a year for a family of four. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen has defended the proposal, saying immigrants must prove they can support themselves financially. Gamero said the change already is having a chilling effect - causing millions to be afraid to use any social programs, even those such as Covered California or the WIC food program that are not included in the proposal. “This public-charge assessment is rooted in a lot of historically racist conceptions of immigrants as being a
burden on the government,” she said. “And this proposed regulation really punishes families for accessing these vital programs that take care of their basic needs.”
This change does not apply to undocumented immigrants, since they are ineligible for these programs already. More information in the proposed changes is available
at ProtectingImmigrantFamilies. org. The public comment period at Regulations. gov ends December 10.
By Desert Star Staff DES MOINES, Iowa – Some 1,800 miles separate Iowa from California, but a law passed by voters there could affect how many Iowa eggs are sold in the Golden State four years from now. At the polls this month, voters approved a measure that requires all eggs sold in California come from cage-free hens by 2022. As the nation’s largest egg producer, Iowa will need to make big changes to comply. Cody Carlson, a staff attorney with the advocacy
group Mercy for Animals, says the overwhelming support for California’s Proposition 12 confirms that many Americans no longer want to eat eggs from battery-caged hens. “The demand for cagefree eggs is exploding nationwide,” he states. “In the last seven years, the sale of non-organic, cage-free eggs has gone up by about 500 percent. So, they’re available, really, wherever you are these days in a mainstream supermarket.” Major retailers, including Walmart and
McDonald’s, have pledged to switch to cage-free eggs in the next decade. Nonetheless, Iowa lawmakers passed a bill earlier this year that would require many stores to stock eggs from caged chickens – a move designed to stop retailers from phasing them out. The Association of California Egg Farmers and the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office opposed the ballot measure, saying it would likely increase prices as egg producers remodel or build new
housing for their chickens. But Carlson says California, with its 40 million residents, consumes a lot of eggs, and other states may follow its lead in requiring more humane treatment of farm animals. “Confining chickens in a cage where they can barely move for their entire lives is just not acceptable,” Carlson stresses. “Not acceptable for the animals, it’s not acceptable for consumers. “And so, cage-free is really just the lowest minimum standard, simply
saying that animals with legs and wings should be able to spread those wings and move those legs.” And more than eggs will be affected. The measure approved by voters also bans the sale of pork and veal in California from farm animals raised in cages that don’t meet the state’s minimum size requirements: at least 43 square feet of usable floor space for calves, and 24 square feet for breeding pigs.
Protesters rallied on Friday in Los Angeles against the Trump administration’s proposed changes to the “public charge” rule. (California Immigrant Policy Center)

Permanente, says focusing on gratitude during what can be a stressful time of year is a great idea. She says a study of people who discussed stressful experiences compared with those who
spoke about what they were grateful for yielded these positive results. “Those who focused on gratitude really showed decreased anxiety and a more positive mindset,” Block relates. “It’s interesting that health and gratitude really go hand in hand. “I think if you feel more grateful and more positive, you sleep better. You have better relationships. It’s an important health tool.” Block suggests discussing gratitude with children. She says getting them involved in an activity of generosity, such as cooking for a sick friend or volunteering, helps them appreciate this idea. Dr. Mary Jane Lambert, a Kaiser Permanente physician who specializes in geriatrics, notes the holidays can be especially hard for people who have lost a loved one. But she says it can be tough for everyone because expectations are high that families will feel
connected and celebrate their time together. Yet these gatherings also can be stressful, and Lambert says one expression of gratitude that people can incorporate is a simple daily reminder about the positives in one’s life. “It may be a family member who visits, a phone call, a personal connection,” she explains. “Even though someone has tended to dwell on the negative, there are ways to change that.” Block says making gratitude more central to a person’s life doesn’t have to end with the holidays. She says families can discuss what they’re grateful for over dinner. “But sometimes it might be just bringing it up while you’re in the car driving your kids around, or just at any other time when you have a moment to say, ‘How was your day?’ and ‘What were you grateful for?’” she states.

Mass. Leads U.S. in Fentanyl Overdose Death Rate By Desert Star Staff BOSTON – Massachusetts reached an alltime high in fentanyl overdose deaths this year, according to new data from the state Department of Public Health. Nearly 90 percent of opioid overdoses in the second quarter had the synthetic opioid fentanyl. What’s more, a report from The Pew Charitable Trusts maintains that Massachusetts had a higher opioid death rate with fentanyl than any other state in 2017. Why is the Bay State suffering from so much fentanyl? Luc Schuster, director of Boston Indicators, the research center at the Boston Foundation, says the New England Drug Enforcement Agency discovered a drug-trafficking circle in Massachusetts and New Hampshire that has fueled the spike in fentanyl use. “They found that there are real hotspots of these transnational criminal organizations in northern parts of Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire,” he states. “This is how fentanyl is coming into our region.” There is some hope the overdose death rate may be declining. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health states that in the first nine months of 2018, the opioid

overdose death rate was slightly lower than during the same period last year. Schuster is glad to see the opioid overdose death rate decrease for the first time in nearly a decade. But the increase in fentanyl troubles him, particularly since it is so
strong. He says overdose treatments such as naloxone are crucial to curbing the dying. “When a drug user is unintentionally using fentanyl, but they’re taking cocaine or heroin that’s laced with fentanyl, it’s really important to be able to have immediate
access to drugs that just help them avoid a fatal overdose in that moment,” Schuster stresses. In October, Gov. Charlie Baker announced that naloxone can be bought without a prescription in Massachusetts.

This past Spring, my mother Lisa Rivera one of Desert Hot Springs favorite Postal Employee, was diagnosed with Cancer. She’s fought hard and has yet to give up, and with the Grace of God is recovering tremendously. Unfortunately, my mother has been off of work for a long time as well as her husband who has been by her side, caring for her every second of the day. Finances and resources, personal and with others, are highlighted. Careful attention is needed along with concentration, efficiency, economy and strength. Accomplish these each day in a slow consistent rhythm. You may uncover more resources. So many things are hidden during retrogrades. Remember others who have much less. Share and tithe is to be a constant reminder. Tithing creates great abundance.
TAURUS You want to move consistently into the future with new ideas and plans but there are so few who understand, few with your illumined vision, and even less with your force of will and stamina. Always you strive for poise during transition times while sending prayerful requests for able, intelligent and financial assistance in order to manifest all that is new into form and matter. Your prayers prepare the field. Maintain a winter garden.
GEMINI Deep feelings, emerging from early life at home may be playing out in present relationships. Because of this, careful with thoughts, actions and communication. Careful that you don’t become part of the difficulty or project onto others your pain. Don’t hide your vulnerability because

everyone will be vulnerable, too. Showing yours eases barriers, allowing heart-felt communication and contact. You want love. Love comes from intentional contact.
CANCER You may experience stress and over work as constant change occurs to everyone everywhere in your life. These daily changes reflect the pulse of humanity playing through your body. You need stabilization, an immediate sense of purpose and remaining within the safety of home. Make changes in small ways. When viewing the big picture stand with compassion and dispassion. Children bring both blessings and hard work.
LEO It seems you need a retreat to bring forth creative freedom. This week should bring heightened sense of feeling separated from others which you may enhance should your communication be harsh. You are able to be very intuitive so observe your thoughts carefully. Is daily life feeling like a transformation is about to occur? Are financial needs being served? A sudden revelation occurs which expands you into other worlds. Take us with you.
VIRGO Small changes occur in your personal life which, in
turn, create big changes. Money may feel restricted, communication may be hidden (from whom, why, where?), there’s a desire to run away from home and a need for regeneration. It feels like seeds of the future, life-changing, are breaking through. You’re restless for emotional independence. Moving forward is slow. Allow inner spiritual intentions to hold you. Transformation arrives for a long visit.
LIBRA You’re called to a past situation and then to a present-future one. The past holds and keeps you for a while in order for it to be liberated. The present/future creates optimism. However, is there are two sides working within you. One contains judgment, the other love. Both are risky. One keeps you spiritually lonely. The other shifts you into a loving community. Can you identify the two sides and where you’re positioned? Forgiveness is alchemical. All the past needs to be (forgiven).

Allow contradictions to work psychologically within. They create new insight, revelations. Don’t push them aside. They are the Harmony Through Conflict process Sag works through to bring new consciousness forth. A natural trajectory into the future.

Driven by Drug Crisis, WV DHHR Plans Child-Welfare Reforms
By Desert Star Staff CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Driven by the drug crisis, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources is preparing a package of changes to child-welfare policies. The number of children taken into state custody has risen by about 50 percent since 2014. DHHR Deputy Secretary Jeremiah Samples said the department wants to try to intervene earlier when families are in trouble - to increase the chance they can stay together. “West Virginia is experiencing a child-welfare crisis that is being driven by the drug epidemic. It’s just bursting the system at the seams,” Samples said. “And so, we have to get ahead of the issue.
We can’t just react; we have to get in front of the problem.” The reforms would include more flexibility in how the state can spend Medicaid funds for children with emotional issues. It would also provide retention bonuses to help reduce turnover among Child Protective Service workers. Samples said the department will present the reform package in the next legislative session. At the federal level, Congress passed the Family First Prevention Services Act in February, 2018. According to DHHR, that legislation is also oriented toward prevention and giving the legal system more flexibility to deal with families in crisis. Samples said removing
Virginia would be the first state to make such a move. Critics have charged it would turn a state function over to a for-profit enterprise, thereby diverting scarce funds. Some supporters have pointed out this is just one of a number of needed changes.

animated “Ratatouille.” Now on a more serious note, he’s back in town performing at the Geffen in “Hughie and Krapp’s Last Tape,” a theater piece comprised of two one act plays directed by Steven Robman. “Hughie,” the first one act on the bill, was written by Eugene O’Neill (“The Iceman Cometh,” “Long Day’s Journey Into Night”). It takes place in the lobby of a seedy Manhattan Hotel. “Erie” Smith ( Dennehy) looks a bit woozy and disheveled as he tries to strike up a conversation with the new desk clerk on duty (played by Joe Grifasi through Nov. 25. Then Armin Shimerman will take on the role.) It is obvious that Erie has had a few too many drinks and wants to reminisce about the previous clerk, his pal Hughie. But unlike Hughie, the new man is not
overly talkative. It is obvious that this is upsetting Erie, who has just come back from Hughie’s funeral and is depressed by his loss. He wants to talk and lift his spirits. In the past Hughie was a good listener who always seemed impressed by Erie’s tall tales about his gambling prowess and the sexy show girls in his life. Hughie believed Erie was special and Erie revelled in his admiration and praise--and now he’s gone. The second playlet is Samuel Beckett’s “Krapp’s Last Tape” which, like “Hughie,” is about loss and growing older. This time Dennehy takes on the persona of Krapp, a writer who never made it big. It begins as a hunched over Krapp walks into a basement room dressed in a baggy outfit that resembles old pajamas. His only companion in the barren room is a tape recorder which
he brings out from a closet, along with a box of tapes. Before he sits down to listen to his younger self talk about lost love and his failed writing career, he fumbles through desk drawers, taking out bananas which he gulps down before tossing their yellow peels around the basically empty room--a room as empty as his life has been. Playwright Beckett, like O’Neill earlier, was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1969. His most memorable play is “Waiting for Godot.” “Hughie & Krapp’s Last Tape,” at the Geffen Playhouse, Audrey Skirball Kenis Theatre, 10886 Le Conte Ave., L.A., ends Dec. 16. Running time: 2 hours (including intermission.) Tickets: $30$120. For information call (310) 208-5454 or online at geffenplayhouse.org.

Rock Art Sculptures to Augment Recent Resort Upgrades
Photo by Greg McClendon By Desert Star Staff Catalina Spa RV Resort in Desert Edge, California has joined the ranks of the art scene in the Greater Palm Springs area. The resort recently added modern art touches to its landscape with the purchase of four large stone sculptures from Hopkins Rock Art on Dillon Road. Hopkins Rock Art is owned and operated by well-respected landscape sculptor Roger Hopkins. Resort owners Jim and Phyllis McInnis recently purchased the sculptures, together with general manager Kevin Miller, to augment the ongoing renovations at the resort and incorporate the region’s art focus for its guests to enjoy. Art has a definitive presence in the Greater Palm Springs area and brings visitors to the
valley to enjoy the numerous art museums and displays that abound. Visitors familiar to Palm Springs will know about Modernism Week held annually, or the popular “art crawls.” “We’re adding our mark to the art culture with this wonderful addition,” explained Miller. Says Hopkins on his website, “My sculpture has been inspired by many influences. I strongly love the appearance of natural rock…the result has been called by others ‘Primitive Modern’ Stone Sculpture.” His career started with landscape construction and over time melded into landscape masonry. His creations have been featured in many magazines and on numerous television shows, including This Old House, The Victory Garden, Nova, The
and others around the world. Bringing such artistic beauty to Catalina Spa adds a new dimension to the continually changing landscape of the resort. Last year, a one-milliondollar upgrade to the lower clubhouse opened to guests, featuring an odorless mineral hot springs pool and spa, fully-equipped fitness center, modern showers and changing restrooms, and a stocked country store. Guests returning this year or coming for the first time will see a fully upgraded upper clubhouse center with new floors, walls, ceilings, and paint, a new stage and sound system, as well as new bathrooms adjacent to the upper pool area. The bathrooms will mimic the same design Learning Channel, The Discovery elements of the lower center. A new welcome/registration Channel, The History Channel,
center is underway, with plans to open in early 2019. And, a solar farm was installed last year and will become operational in 2019 as well. Stonehenge is an eight-foot tall piece lending a splash of “modernism” at the entrance to the new lower community center. Staff have dubbed this one “The Catalina Man.” A sculpture representing puzzle pieces will anchor a small commons area that is being established, together with a bench, where guests can sit. Two others will be installed soon. Miller said, “These art pieces will add a really beautiful enhancement to our resort as we continue to remodel and update various areas and buildings for our guests.”

WITH LADY BEVERLY COHN
Playwright Luis Valdez’s “Valley of the Heart” on Stage at the Mark Taper Forum
L-R: Daniel Valdez (Cayetano Montaño,) Randall Nakano (Ichiro Yamaguchi,) and Joy Osmanski (Hana Yamaguchi) enjoy a fun moment. Photo: Craig Schwartz There is no doubt that multi-award winning playwright Luis Valdez is a brilliant playwright, earning his stripes with his innovative “Zoot Suit,” which premiered in 1978 at the Mark Taper Forum and subsequently made history by becoming the first Chicano musical to hit Broadway. His newest play, “Valley of the Heart” was greatly anticipated, but alas the production does not live up to the brilliance of his iconic “Zoot Suit,” which is not the fault of the script. Let’s start with the script, which is very well written and begins in 1945. It tells the story of two immigrant families – the Yamaguchis, a JapaneseAmerican family who own a farm in California’s Santa Clara Valley known today as Silicon Valley. They share the land with the Montaños, a Mexican-American family who are sharecroppers living in a small, quite rural farmhouse adjacent to the Yamaguchis. Both families are friendly with each other and are determined to give their American-born children a slice of the American dream. Unbeknownst to the respective parents, the first generation Americans from each family are secretly in love with each other. In view of the White House’s draconian action against immigrants, this eerily timely story is told through the prism of World War II when Japanese citizens were ripped from their homes and put into detention facilities, which were ill equipped concentration camps. Their crime? Being Japanese. And for that, they were considered the enemy of the United States of America who was at war with Japan following the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. So far. So good. The script captures the painful words and action this Japanese family endured as

they prepare to leave for the Heart Mountain Relocation Camp in Wyoming with just whatever they could carry. Their Mexican neighbors give them moral support, assuring them that they would take care of the farm until their Japanese friends were returned home. In addition to a beautifully crafted script, the production values are outstanding, beginning with David Murakami’s projection design taking you into the surrounding vistas such as shots of crops and the pastoral country setting. Each of the family’s homes are well designed by scenic designer John Iacovelli, who makes maximum use of the space, with Pablo Santiago’s lighting design and Philip G. Allen’s sound beautifully enhancing the action at hand. So, we have an outstanding script and outstanding production values. Sadly, what we don’t have is an ensemble of skilled actors who could delve deeply into playwright/director’s Valdez’s characters and deliver polished professional performances. However, there is one excellent performance given by Lakin Valdez who as Benjamin Montaño is also the narrator of the story. He is in love with Thelma Yamaguchi, poorly played by Melanie Arii Mah, who gave what amounted to line readings. The actress never delved below the surface to reach the subtext of her character’s lines and mostly indicated* her emotional moments. The story takes us through the interment, Benjamin and Thelma’s marriage and the birth of their child, Benjamin’s determination to get reunited with his Japanese family, the homecoming, a few musical and pantomime numbers that seemed dropped in for effect and so it goes until the
end. All this said, I have the utmost respect and admiration for Mr. Valdez and look forward to whatever project he has on his backburner Other members of the cast gave performances ranging from rank amateur to possibly college level with
some of the dialogue not even understandable. They include,) Moises Castro (Ernesto “Tito” Montaño,) Justin Chien (Joe “Yoshi” Yamaguchi,) Randall Nakano (Ichiro Yamaguchi,) Joy Osmanski, (Hana Yamaguchi,) Rose Portillo(Paula Montaño,) Daniel Valdez (Cayetano Montaño,) Christy Sandoval (Maruca Montaño,) and Scott Keiji Takeda (Calvin Sakamoto). I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Mariela Arteaga and Michael Naydoe Pinedo, the mysterious figures draped in black from head to toe. They portrayed Kurogos, stagehands in traditional Japanese theatre who incorporate Kubuki-style movements. They moved on cat feet and gracefully aided in prop and set changes, as well as standing at attention as formidable guards looming in the background. The big take-away is a reminder that the interment of the Japanese people is one of the blackest marks in American history and one we thought we would never
witness again. Alas, a similar black mark is unfolding right before our eyes as we see immigrant families torn apart and most recently mothers and small children being tear gassed as they attempt to cross the border. Valdez’s play sharply illuminates the agony inflicted upon innocent people when a government unilaterally decides that a race of people is a danger to the nation’s security. *”Indicating” is an acting term meaning when an actor fakes an emotion instead of having it emanate from a truthful place. and Oracle.” With the Zombies once again nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, this amazing journey through the seminal ‘60s-spawned band’s career and the recording of their best-known LP is fully captured via the memories of original members Rod Argent (keyboards, vocals), Colin Blunstone (lead vocals), Hugh Grundy (percussion) and Chris White (bass guitar, vocals). Fully illustrated, the volume features plenty of photographs from throughout the troupe’s 50+ year run and the original artwork of artist Terry Quirk (who completed the cover of “Odessey and Oracle” a half century ago) and Vivienne Boucherat (who created mixed media artwork for each song). If you hurry, you can get a copy of the incredible book signed by original members Argent and Blunstone. Information: TheZombiesMusic.com.

FAMILY FEATURES
s another busy travel season approaches, road-weary parents and families can hold on to holiday cheer a little longer by counting on tech as their preferred travel companion. Every year, tens of millions of travelers brave planes, trains and automobiles to celebrate year-end holidays and exchange goodwill with family and friends. Consider these ideas for using tech to make this year’s travel a little easier.
Electronic Entertainment
Nearly every parent is wary of excess screen time, but holiday travel is a good time to set aside those concerns. Hours of chaotic travel, unfamiliar scenery and overall disruption to typical daily schedules can wreak havoc on kids. One way to keep those stressful feelings at bay is entertainment, and there are plenty of options that can serve as aides to keep kids calm and collected when travel gets tiresome. Handheld video games, portable DVD players and tablets can
all be customized with kid-friendly content to make it from point A to point B with your sanity intact, or to simply enjoy an uninterrupted hour catching up with loved ones.
and compact, the phone also features a large six-inch Full HD+ display and dual cameras that let you shoot in portrait mode. Learn more at alcatel7. com.
Savvy Smartphones
Get Organized
It's a trend on the rise: More than 70 percent of U.S. travelers responding to Google Consumer Insights agreed they “always” use their smartphones when traveling to research activities or attractions, locate shopping areas and restaurants, or look up directions. For value-conscious travelers, a smartphone like the Alcatel 7 offers robust talk time, nonstop streaming and lightning-fast charging. Up to 28 hours of talk time makes it ideal for connecting with family and friends down the street or around the globe, and after just 22 minutes of charging, it can be used for up to six hours. With more than 10 hours of nonstop streaming in a single charge, kids won’t have to miss out on any social media stories or updates from their favorite vloggers while waiting for grandma's pecan pie to cool. Sleek
Technology isn’t just for fun or capturing memories, or even for finding a late-night diner when you’re on the road. With the right apps and tools, you can turn your smartphone or tablet into a virtual file folder filled with all your travel details, from an itinerary mapping out each step of your journey to confirmation codes for reservations, e-tickets and more.
Power Up You’ve heard the tongue-in-cheek adage that technology is great when it works. One thing is sure: it won’t work if it isn’t properly charged. Take time to lay out all your devices and their respective charging equipment before you pack your bags. Fully charge all devices, install new batteries and, when you’re done, stash the cords and
extra batteries in your carry-on bag where you can access them easily later.
Connectivity Crashes If you’re planning to rely heavily on your tech devices while traveling, be sure you’re aware of any potential connectivity issues that may limit your access to certain apps and features. Remember that in certain areas signals can be spotty. If there’s essential info you may need, download it directly into your device so you can retrieve it with or without a good connection.
Protective Care
Away from home, you’re likely to encounter situations and environments that put your family’s tech devices in precarious places. Even a suitcase with liquid toiletries can pose a hazard, but a simple plastic bag can prevent damage from spills en route. Before you embark on your trip, also take steps to safeguard your tech devices with screen protectors and snug-fit covers or cases.
Give Gifts that Matter without Regretting the Price Holiday cheer turns into financial fright for many people every year. According to MagnifyMoney’s annual postholiday debt survey, Americans rang up an average of $1,054 in debt during the 2017 holiday shopping season, an increase of 5 percent from 2016. However, buying gifts and spreading cheer doesn’t have to come with a giant price tag that screams regret. Shop the sales. Tech gifts top wish lists for recipients of all ages, and that makes them popular items for holiday specials. Preview ads for great offers and look for bundles or other perks that make the purchase price even more attractive.

Focus on function. Tech devices come in different sizes and colors, and in every price range. For example, an Alcatel 7 smartphone provides the same connectivity, talk time and display as phones that cost up to four times as much. Plus, multiple camera modes allow for standout photos. With dual rear cameras, portrait mode allows you to focus on a subject in real-time with blurred background effect. Set a budget. If you determine up-front how much you can afford to spend, there won’t be a reason to second-guess your purchases. Make a list of everyone you’ll be buying for and determine how much you’ll spend on each person. Think about gifts each recipient will appreciate that fall within your threshold for a foolproof, debt-proof approach to holiday shopping.

Revised Notice of Availability to Reflect Changes in the
Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Temporary Facilities for Sheltering Unaccompanied Children at Goodfellow Air Force Base (AFB), Texas
For Public Comment The U.S. Air Force (Air Force) announces the availability of and invites public comments on its Draft EA evaluating proposed HHS Temporary Facilities for Sheltering Unaccompanied Children at Goodfellow AFB, Texas. The Air Force would, as part of a humanitarian response, provide and prepare approximately 70 contiguous acres of land on which to erect temporary living quarters for up to 7,500 children who entered the United States without parents and workspace for approximately 7,500 HHS support staff for up to 180 days. The proposed action would provide appropriate support facilities and security fencing to protect the unaccompanied children and separate the temporary facilities from other areas and functions at Goodfellow AFB and the neighboring community. The analysis contained in the Draft EA is not related to Department of Homeland Security actions for housing families or adults who have entered the United States. The Air Force invites public participation through this solicitation for comments on the Draft EA and unsigned Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI). Comments are still requested 7 days from the original publication of this notice on 07/06/18. The Draft EA and FONSI are available on the internet at http://www.goodfellow.af.mil/, please provide comments via email to 17TRW.PA2@us.af.mil. This Draft EA is provided for public comment in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the President’s Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) NEPA Regulations (40 CFR §§1500-1508), and 32 CFR §989, Environmental Impact Analysis Process (EIAP). Public commenting on the analysis and consideration of environmental impacts allows the Air Force to make better, informed decisions. The Air Force will consider all substantive comments, which include comments that challenge the environmental analysis, methodologies, or information in the Draft EA as being inaccurate or inadequate; identify impacts not analyzed, or mitigations not considered. Non-substantive comments are considered those that express a conclusion, an opinion, or a vote for or against the proposal or some aspect of it, state a political position, or otherwise state a personal preference. PRIVACY ADVISORY NOTICE Letters or other written comments provided may be published in the EA and made available to the public. Providing personal information is voluntary. Only the names of the individuals making comments and specific comments will be disclosed; personal home addresses and phone numbers will not be published in the EA.

“The world looks wobbly”
By Desert Star Staff LONDON, -The World in 2019, the annual publication from The Economist, predicts that 2019 will be jittery, citing more populists in power from Brazil to Italy, a trade war under way between America and China and growing public wariness of technology and giant tech companies. The World in 2019 is on newsstands as of Thursday, November 22nd and can be found on https://worldin2019. economist.com and within The Economist app. Daniel Franklin, editor of The World in 2019, said of the publication: “You will find a feast of forecasts in these pages. On the political front, the Trump Show moves into Series Two, now facing a Democratic-controlled House of Representatives; beyond America, countries with more than a third of the world’s population will hold nation-wide elections in 2019--among them India, Indonesia, Nigeria and the whole of the European Union.” Mr Franklin continued: “As for the economy, by midyear America will be in its longest-ever expansion, but a trade war, rising interest rates and waning stimulus from tax cuts could spell trouble ahead. In short, the world in 2019 looks wobbly.” Mr Franklin has identified a dozen takeaways for 2019: 1. The economic wind is changing. By mid-year America will break its record for its longest uninterrupted expansion, but by the end of the year it could be heading into a recession. China’s growth rate will slow down, while India’s speeds up. Postchaos Syria will top the global growth league; at the other end will be a shrinking Venezuela and Iran. In Europe, Italy will
18
DesertSTAR
flirt with financial crisis. 2. The markets converge. But which way? Will America’s stockmarket fall back, or the rest of the world rise? The smart bet is on the latter. America’s bosses, however, should enjoy life while they can: the good times for USA Inc won’t last. 3. Democracy has a big year. Countries with more than a third of the world’s population will hold nationwide elections—including India, the world’s biggest democracy, as well as Indonesia and Nigeria. Optimists hope this will bring the beginnings of a reversal in the global trend of recent years towards declining freedoms. 4. Brexit happens. And as Britain leaves the European Union the recriminations will intensify. The EU, meanwhile,
will get a new commission, a new parliament and a new head for the European Central Bank. 5. China gets nervous about the number nine. Years ending in nine bring a clutch of awkward anniversaries that worry China’s leaders. In 2019 it is 100 years since the May Fourth Movement, a much-celebrated protest, and 30 years since the bloody suppression of student-led demonstrations in Tiananmen Square. 6. Famous figures return to the limelight. They do so thanks to their anniversaries: 150 years since Mahatma Gandhi’s birth, 500 years since Hernán Cortés arrived in Mexico and since Leonardo da Vinci’s death (the Tuscan genius time-travels to 2019 to share his observations about the modern world, and his drawings inspire our cover). 7. A new Moonrush begins. Fifty years after Neil Armstrong took his giant leap for mankind, spacecraft (some of them private) are heading back to the Moon. Meanwhile, NASA’s New Horizons probe reaches Ultima Thule, in the most distant encounter in the history of spaceflight. 8. There’s no hiding from, or for, tech. Whether it’s artificial intelligence or facial recognition, tech will be everywhere. But Silicon Valley may have peaked, and the tech giants will be in regulators’ sights in both America and Europe. 9. Big Culture makes a splash. America has the excitement of The Shed in New York (a giant new space for the arts). Germany experiences the shock of the controversial new Humboldt Forum in Berlin. 10. Statistical landmarks concentrate minds. Half the world is online, India’s GDP overtakes Britain’s, Nigeria’s population reaches 200m and in America millennials
outnumber baby-boomers to become the country’s largest generation. 11. It’s the year of…the vegan, “slow social”, gender self-ID and civil partnerships (gaining ground on traditional marriage in a growing number of countries). Thanks to the UN, it is also the year of indigenous languages. Businesses will need to be increasingly alive to social trends and the politics surrounding them. 12. The battle of 2019 begins. The fighting is between President Donald Trump and a Democrat-controlled Congress. And it will be fierce. Guest writers in this 33rd edition of The World in 2019 include: Jeremy Corbyn, Britain’s Labour leader; Stacey Cunningham, the head of the New York Stock Exchange; Laurene Powell Jobs, president and founder of Emerson Collective; Huateng “Pony” Ma, CEO of Tencent; Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former president of Liberia; Steven Pinker, Harvard University professor and author; Isabelle Kocher, CEO of Engie; Tobi Lütke, CEO of Shopify; Fabiola Gianotti, director-general of CERN; and Neil MacGregor, director, Humboldt Forum. There is also a special section on Open Future, a conversation on how to reinvent liberalism for the 21st century, launched as part of The Economist’s 175th anniversary, including contributions by Yuval Noah Harari, historian and author; Christine Lagarde, managing director of the International Monetary Fund and Angelina Jolie, actor and special envoy of the UNHCR. The World in 2019 print edition is available for purchase today on newsstands or on The Economist Store. The website (https://worldin2019.economist. com) and app edition, which can be read within The Economist app on iTunes and Google Play are also live today. Source: PRNewswire

“The Understudy” Pokes Affectonate Fun at the World of Theatre Continued from Page 1
When the Palm Springsbased theatre group announced Rebeck’s snarky but affectionate play “The Understudy”, I couldn’t wait to see what the Coyote group would do with this ‘actor’s about actors’ comedy play’. It’s a three hander, meaning we have two male actorcandidates and one avenging female stage manager from Hell named Roxanne, who puts two male actors Harry and Jake auditioning for the role of the ‘understudy’ through their paces before giving them the okay to join the performing cast. Everyone’s nerves are on edge. The pressure to perform even in these rehearsals is intense, draining, and downright hilarious. Professional actors and aspiring ones too, will relate to the shenanigans taking place on the stage. There was a lot smiling and nodding of heads in the audience throughout this 90 minute comedy gem of hidden agendas, bragging, prevaricating, and a form of “one-ups-man-ship” as a way of saving ones’ dignity yet still get the “gig”. In the world of the theatre, and Hollywood too, the acting art form demands that one never burns bridges, however, if you do, you do so at your own peril. Translation: the familiar warning of ”You will never work in this town again” becomes thunderously clear. Discretion is definitely the better part of valor. Wherever this play is performed its casts are generally first rate. I haven’t seen other professional production company lists of cast members, but if I did, I still would be hard pressed to exchange this trio of professional actors for any who have previously performed the roles. David Youse, an accomplished actor, director, producer in his own right, brings those skill sets to his performance as Harry, a now struggling, aging Hollywood actor, trying for a New York theatre gig. It’s his way of trying for a comeback. But his history as a nitpicker and a quirky, and irritating, at times, performer, send messages that the audition/rehearsal
process could become contentious. In addition, there’s a teeny-weeny problem standing in his way. Remember Roxanne the stage manager from Hell. Well, she’s the person conducting the audition/rehearsal and Harry is her former paramour who jilted her at the altar eight years ago. Oh oh! Fasten your seat belts. It’s going to be a bumpy night, as Margo Channing (Bette Davis) from “All About Eve” would say. The character of Roxanne is brilliantly and intensely performed by Robin McAlpine in a tour de force comedy performance. Remember my comment referencing burning bridges at one’s peril? Well what goes around comes around in spades; especially in the world of show business. Thrust into this hilarious maelstrom of how actors deal with such ego-driven issues is Jake, a smug, actor who already has the role of the ‘main’ understudy, but must now vie with Harry for the ‘stand-by’ understudy role in the event that Jake is unable to perform the role should an unlikely event occur. Actor Alex Best as Jake, is the perfect foil for both Harry and Roxanne to avenge Harry’s past behavior. And gain Roxanne’s favor for Jake. Roxanne can play one man off the other, smiling all the while as the men are caught in her revenge web. Jake is firm in defending his turf as the already accepted understudy. But ego is a strong emotion and comedy is the perfect vehicle to push everyone’s panic buttons. As good as the men are in this delightful, blistering, comedy, and they are very, very good, it’s the Stage Manager role played by Robin McAlpine who wins the day. Ms.McAlpine delivers a master class in high energy stage domination, pacing and timing, and it’s absolutely delicious to watch her work her actor magic on the audience. None of the above, however, would be possible, without the vision talent and experience of actor/ director Chuck Yates. He’s an award-winning director who has directed other people’s productions, who now after ten years of not directing a
