Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 15th Annual Ranch Recovery Centers luncheon was held at the Classic Club on November 20th. Nearly 200 people arrived to celebrate this cause, that helps so many that are addicted to drugs and alcohol. The Ranch started with humble beginnings so long ago. The center provides two services in the Desert. One for treatment and one for transitional/sober living. They now have 99 beds and have doctors and nurses on staff. Ernie Rubin has been with the Ranch for many years and was supposed to honor President/CEO Rick Mesa of the Ranch Recovery Ctr. It was a big secret that he was not supposed to hear about. Instead, Rick Mesa has his own secret. He honored Ernie Rubin for her many years of service. Mesa noted that Rubin is an extraordinary woman that gives of herself for many projects and charities. Mesa came to be with the ranch 33 years ago when it was called The Lost Heads Ranch in Desert Hot Springs. The Ranch serves the entire
Coachella Valley. The Ranch has two facilities for Detox and Primary Treatment, one for men and one for women. All the programs help families to better understand the horrors of addiction. Should Boards Shine More Light On Solar Installations? By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Mr. Richardson: Last year, I volunteered to sit on the architectural committee for our HOA and it really opened my eyes to how an HOA operates. Applications for solar power installations are approved without hesitation. We do not require the owner to submit a copy of a building permit before work begins. It seems to me we are leaving ourselves unprotected in the event there is a mishap with the solar equipment that results in personal injury or loss of property. I broached the issue

The HOA does not control the leasing company, so associations may require members own the system to be installed. Solar systems will continue to improve in efficiency, and an increasing number of HOA

Building permits (if required), and liability and workers compensation insurance covering the installers is also essential. Hopefully, this sheds a little more light on the subject. Best, Kelly
By Janice Gough The Department of Aging studies show that retirees live longer and they feel a greater since of reward, by staying active. After all, we have spent our entire lives developing and working hard in one type of work and now you are facing a new adventure and a change in schedule. When you are about to retire, take into account the emotions of being needed, having a daily purpose, losing daily work relationships and friendships, and the adjustment that your spouse may have to make by having you at home all day. The paradox of thinking young and staying active separates us as we age. Our brain actually controls much of the success of the way we live in aging and retirement. If you have always been a person who lives life as it comes, then you may age more quickly. Age is a state of mind. Those who desire to stay young and active will create new challenges incorporating the knowledge of their working years and gearing interests toward things they previously did not have time to pursue. It is important to reestablish goals and a meaningful activity list. This may be a simple switch for the “goal orientated” person, but those who have not been that way in their lives, should establish an overview of what their typical weekly activities are. The down-deep heart’s wishes they have buried for so
paying forward are the most rewarding ways to enjoy your new found freedom. As simple as it may seem, daily affirmations help keep you centered on your beliefs. Keeping a journal of your thoughts may help you explore your own beliefs and be a found treasure one day, for those who never really knew who you were. Pondering the beauty around you, rewarding yourself with the positives of your life, and remember the best memories of your life and family creates joy within us. Studies concur that having a spiritual belief system and praying creates a positive flow in our brains that trickles through our entire bodies and keep us healthier. By Desert Star Staff According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), approximately 30.3 million Americans are living with diabetes, which affects people of all ages. Diabetes requires time and energy to manage but there are many simple things people can do to help make living with the disease easier.
Here are five life hacks for those living with diabetes. • Get Moving. Experts say that exercise helps maintain stable blood glucose levels, but not everyone loves the gym. Whether it’s learning ballroom dancing or joining a basketball league, enjoyable hobbies can boost motivation to exercise. A fitness tracker that counts steps is a good
way to discover how much movement you’re getting and allows you to make changes if necessary. • Travel Smart. Don’t let the logistics of travel put a damper on your next trip or vacation. It just requires a bit of additional preparation. The ADA recommends having a medical exam prior to a trip and bringing at least twice
as much medication and supplies as you think you need. If you are flying, be sure to keep your medical supplies in your carry-on baggage. • Rethink your diabetes management. Consider new medical advancements that can help make diabetes a smaller part of your life. For example, the Omnipod Insulin Management System, a wearable insulin pump, eliminates the need for injections. Its small, lightweight design gives people living with diabetes more freedom and flexibility, and, unlike traditional pumps, has no tubes to disconnect. Offering up to 72 hours of nonstop insulin, the Pod is water-resistant and is the only tubeless insulin pump available in the U.S. A great option for both adults and children, it is discreet, easy-to-use, and allows users to take part in just about any activity. “Diabetes limits you as a person,” said Ross Baker, an Omnipod user. “I thought using an insulin pump would control my life more – needles, cords,
By Desert Star Staff ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Starting in January, Maryland becomes the second state in the nation to restrict the routine use of antibiotics in animals. The state’s new Keep Antibiotics Effective Act will prohibit large farms from feeding healthy cattle, hogs and poultry antibiotics at low doses to promote growth. It’s a response to public health concerns that overusing antibiotics - both in agriculture and healthcare - contributes to the rising threat of antibiotic resistance. Maryland State
Veterinarian Michael Radebaugh pointed out that very few antibiotics are used in both humans and animals to treat bacterial infections. “Of all the antibiotics that are used in people, a very small amount of those are also used in animals,” Radebaugh said. “You can’t really compare apples to apples on this; the humans are using different antibiotics.” Critics of the new state law have said it’s a good start, but a loophole undercuts the overall goal by not requiring confirmation of disease in a flock or herd before using antibiotics. The law also
doesn’t apply to small farm operations selling fewer than 200 cattle or swine, or 60,000 birds per year. California is the only other state to restrict the routine use of antibiotics in animals. Professor Ellen Silbergeld with the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health also worked on the World Health Organization’s strongly worded recommendation against using antibiotics in healthy animals. “And one of the first things we said was ‘no’ - no giving drugs to animals unless you know the disease you’re afraid of, you’re concerned
about, it is actually present in the herd or the flock, and you know what drug to use,” Silbergeld said. State officials say the new law will do just that, as it prevents the use of medically important antibiotics and requires a veterinarian’s permission to use antibiotics, including recommended dosage for targeted treatment. Health care policy expert Jordan Cooper said he remains concerned about widespread antibiotic resistance on a global scale. “People are actually getting sicker in hospitals; tax dollars and health insurance
premiums are increasing,” Cooper said. “This all is a result of the misuse of antibiotics in agriculture. It’ll hit your pocketbook and it will hit your loved ones. And that’s why everyone ought to care.” Cooper also suggests that people ask their doctor if an antibiotic prescription is absolutely necessary before taking it. According to the World Health Organization, consumers are also driving the demand for meat raised without antibiotics, with more major food chains adopting “antibiotic-free” policies for their meat supplies.
By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio – Big tobacco is coming clean about the dangers of smoking, and health advocates in Ohio are celebrating. The tobacco industry began running corrective advertisements on Sunday as a result of a 2006 judgment for lying about the negative effects of smoking, and for marketing its products to children. Jeff Stephens, director of government relations with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network in Ohio, says ads will run in newspapers for five months and on primetime television, outlining what the science has shown for years.
“Basically about the adverse health effects of smoking, the addictiveness of smoking – that there’s no health benefit from all these low-tar, light cigarettes, that they’ve manipulated the cigarette design and that there’s no safe secondhand smoke,” he states. The lawsuit actually began in 1999 and Stephens says it’s taken years of stalling and appeals since the 2006 ruling for the tobacco industry to finally correct the public record. Some anti-tobacco groups are concerned that, because the ads are only in newspapers and on television, young people, who typically consume
media online and whom Big Tobacco is said to target as replacement smokers, won’t hear the message. Ohio’s smoking rate of 21 percent is higher than the national average of 15 percent, and the tobacco industry spends about $460 million a year marketing its products in Ohio. Stephens says even though science supports the dangers of smoking, efforts to reduce tobacco use are always thwarted by big tobacco. “This year of all these public statements are going to really help remind not only the public but also lawmakers that big tobacco has a history of deceit, a history of wanting
to further its own marketing of its deadly product,” he states. According to federal data, tobacco use is the number one cause of preventable death and disease, claiming the lives of more than 480,000
Americans each year. The American Cancer Society was among the public health groups that reached the settlement last month with the tobacco companies and the U.S. Department of Justice.

Drug Makers Are Leading the Way on R&D
By Kenneth E. Thorpe Over five million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. While a few drugs can temporarily alleviate symptoms, there’s no treatment that slows the progression of the underlying disease; so family members watch helplessly as their loved ones’ minds fade away. Drug companies are determined to end this suffering. So far, 99 percent of Alzheimer’s clinical trials have failed, costing companies billions. Despite these repeated stumbles, firms are undeterred and currently have more than 70 potential Alzheimer’s treatments in development. Despite these investments, some argue that drug companies aren’t devoting enough resources to research and development. The Institute for New Economic Thinking issued a scathing paper this summer. It condemns drug
makers for buying back company stock and paying dividends to shareholders, rather than spending every available cent on research and development (R&D). The Institute urges the government to push aside these private companies and take a more active role in developing medicines. This criticism is unfair -- and the recommendation to elbow aside the private sector is dangerous. Without the hundreds of billions of dollars committed by privatesector researchers, it will be virtually impossible to cure Alzheimer’s, cancer and dozens of other scourges. The pharmaceutical industry invests a much higher percentage of revenues into R&D than other sectors. The top 18 drug companies, according to the Institute, spent an average of 16 percent of proceeds on
R&D from 2006 to 2015. Compare that to the automobile industry. Despite the prevailing narrative of a “spare no expense” race to develop self-driving vehicles, the sector reinvests just four percent of revenues into R&D, according to consulting firm PwC. Pharmaceutical companies’ investments have led to lifesaving therapies. Since 2000, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved more than 550 new medicines. The most impressive breakthroughs are yet to come. Globally, more than 7,000 new treatments are in development. Seventy percent of these medicines use completely new methods to treat an illness. Consider CAR-T cell therapy, a technique that reengineers a patient’s own immune system to kill tumors. The
experimental medicine, which received FDA approval in August, put many patients with advanced leukemia into remission during clinical trials. It’s naïve to think that firms will continue making these costly, risky investments if there’s no chance of earning a return. Drug companies deliver enormous benefits to society, but they’re not charities. If they can’t offer investors a chance at attractive returns, they won’t be able to raise funding for future research. The government is in no position to supersede these firms. Private R&D spending dwarfs the National Institutes of Health’s $32 billion budget. Given the political realities in Washington, does anyone seriously think the government is able and willing to exponentially increase funding for medical research? Americas’ physical and financial health depends on
continued private medical R&D. Currently, 40 percent of Americans suffer from a chronic illness. These diseases account for 90 percent of total U.S. health care costs. New treatments and cures offer the best hope of tempering this spending. If pharmaceutical companies develop a new treatment for Alzheimer’s disease by 2025, Americans could save $220 billion by 2030. Critics of the pharmaceutical industry say firms don’t spend all that much on research and development. If those accusations were true, who deserves credit for the hundreds of new medications that improve people’s lives and lower health care costs?
form an intense connection with their robot companions.” “These robots will be tailor-made to meet people’s desires, and will do things that human partners cannot or will not do. For this reason, significant numbers of people will likely come to use robots as their primary mode of sexual experience.” The pair, who also co-authored the book “Robot Sex: A Book for the Enlightened Sapiosexual,” argue that the rise of digisexuality will bring benefits, including potentially saving human relationships. They also say that digisexuality will have a positive impact, particularly for people who experienced sexual trauma in the past or for those who have difficulty forming human relationships. However they warn that it will also bring a slew of difficulties and argue that
doctors must be prepared to deal with digisexuality and have a framework for how to approach it. Noel Sharkey of the Foundation for Responsible Robotics (FRR) recently argued against sex robots being used by the elderly in care homes. “They are being proposed for the elderly in care homes, which I think is controversial. If you have severe Alzheimer’s you can’t really tell the difference. We need to think about as a society what we want to do about it,” the researcher said. “It’s very sad because it’s going to be a one-way relationship,” he continued. “If people bond with robots it’s very worrying. You are loving an artifact that can’t love you back, and the best they can do is fake it.”
she points out. “It’s going to impact the quality of life on pretty much every Michigan resident. “ Both U.S. Sens. Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow
of Michigan have come out against the Senate bill. President Donald Trump continues to push Congress to pass a tax cut bill before the end of the year.
Kenneth E. Thorpe is a professor of health policy at Emory University and the chairman of the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease.
Scientists say ‘digisexuals’ inevitable as more people bond with robots
By Desert Star Staff Academics are arguing that many people will soon be identifying as “digisexuals” and taking their sexual identity from having sex with robots. While sex robots are currently quite primitive, a new report published in the Journal of Sexual and
Relationship Therapy argues that before long they will be able to look, speak and act like real people - and will be specifically designed to fulfill a person’s desires. The report’s authors, Neil McArthur and Markie L. C. Twist, from the University of Manitoba, Canada, argue that
we need to be ready to deal with the phenomenon when it comes to fruition. “There is no question, then, that sexbots are coming,” McArthur and Twist say. “Our view is that they will represent a different sort of sexual experience from what existing technologies offer. First of all, people will
By Desert Star Staff LANSING, Mich. – As many people across the state begin their holiday shopping this weekend, analysts are warning that the Republican tax bill is no gift to Michiganders, particularly those most in need. According to the Michigan League for Public Policy, under both the plan that passed the U.S. House last week and the bill set to be discussed in the Senate next week, the wealthiest 1 percent of Michiganders will benefit the most. Furthermore, Rachel
Richards, the League’s legislative coordinator, says the Senate plan, which includes a repeal of the individual health care mandate, would result in nearly 400,000 people statewide losing their health care. “We anticipate premiums on the marketplace to rise by about $1,520 for a family of four, and we would likely see cuts to Medicare nearing $1 billion in order to pay for these changes,” she states. Analysts expect either plan would raise the deficit by as much as $1.5 trillion
over the next 10 years. Republicans say the massive corporate tax cuts will spur economic growth and stimulate the job market, but many leading economists argue that has not happened with previous cuts. Richards says a deficit that large would leave lawmakers no choice but to “right size” the budget, which she says would result in drastic cuts that will be felt by all. “Education services, food assistance, basic cash assistance, infrastructure funding, health care,”

CA pending home sales drop to lowest level in six months
By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES, California pending home sales shrank for the fourth consecutive month in October to post the lowest level in six months. Even with the homebuying season winding down, Realtors reported slight increases in floor calls, open house traffic, and listing appointments/ client presentations compared with a year ago. Pending home sales data: • Based on signed contracts, year-over-year statewide pending home sales dropped in October on a seasonally adjusted basis, with the Pending Home Sales Index (PHSI)* declining 2.6 percent from 119.1 in October 2016 to 116.0 in October 2017. California pending home sales were also down on a monthly basis,
decreasing 3.3 percent from the September index of 120.0. • Pending home sales have declined on an annual basis for nine of the last 10 months so far this year. After a solid run-up of closed sales in May, June, and September, a continued scarcity of housing inventory, which drove up home prices, may squeeze the market heading into the closing months of the year. • At the regional level, the Central Valley Region recorded an increase in pending sales from the previous year. Within Central Valley, pending sales dipped 0.8 percent in Kern County and fell 6.6 percent in Sacramento County compared to a year ago. • The San Francisco Bay Area experienced the largest drop in pending sales, falling 10.5 percent from October

San Francisco County was the anomaly with pending sales rising 15.1 percent from a year ago. • Pending home sales were down 7.3 percent from October 2016 in Southern California. Los Angeles and Orange counties registered lower annual pending sales of 4.7 percent and 4.9 percent, respectively. Double-digit, annual pending sales drops occurred in Riverside (14.0 percent), San Diego (11.4 percent), and San Bernardino (10.4 percent) counties. • C.A.R.’s Market Velocity Index – home sales relative to the number of new listings coming on line each month to replenish that sold inventory, or market indicator
of future price appreciation – suggests that there continues to be upward pressure on home prices through the fall. Home sales continue to outstrip new listings coming online to restock sold units. • The Market Velocity Index rose from 40 in October 2016 to 75 in October 2017, implying that there were 75 percent more homes sold than new listings, meaning the supply of homes available for sale continued to drop. October REALTOR® Market Pulse Survey**: • The share of homes selling above asking price fell from 28 percent a year ago to 23 percent in October, while the share of properties selling below asking price inched up from 44 percent to 46 percent. The remaining 30 percent sold at asking price, up from 28 percent in October 2016. • For homes that sold above asking price, the premium paid over asking price dipped from 9 percent in October 2016 to 8 percent in October 2017. • The 28 percent of homes that sold below asking price sold for an average of 12 percent below asking price in October compared to 9 percent a year ago. • Two-thirds (66 percent) of properties sold in October received multiple offers, and the number of offers received was up slightly at 2.6 offers in October 2017 compared to 2.3 offers a year ago.
• The share of properties receiving three or more offers in October was 41 percent compared to 30 percent a year ago. • Market competitiveness increased the most in lower- and midpriced homes compared with last year. Fifty-eight percent of homes priced $200,000$299,999 received three or more offers, up from 23 percent a year ago, and 59 percent of homes priced $500,00-$749,999 received three or more offers, up from 21 percent in 2017. • Listing price reductions crept up from 31 percent a year ago to 32 percent in October. • Declining housing affordability/inflated home prices/rising interest rates was the top concern of more than 4 in 10 (44 percent) REALTORS® compared with 45 percent a year ago. More REALTORS® cited a lack of available homes for sale as their top concern at 30 percent in 2017 compared with 26 percent last October. A slowdown in economic growth, lending and financing, and policy and regulations rounded out REALTORS®’ remaining biggest concerns. • REALTORS®’ expectations of market conditions over the next year have largely remained flat over the past few months, hovering in the low 50s but is still in positive territory.
But they have a huge impact on health and productivity. Workers who take a fiveminute stroll every hour exhibit increased energy levels, an elevated mood, less fatigue and fewer food cravings. Other companies encourage workers to shun the elevator and use the stairs by designing visually compelling, inviting staircases. The BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee headquarters in Chattanooga includes a monumental staircase with multi-story outdoor views in each of its buildings. The insurance giant reasoned that workers would eagerly take stairs that offer picturesque views of the Tennessee River. Views of a musty stairwell with no natural light? Not so much. Many employers also provide workers with sit-stand desks. Allowing workers to alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day is among the simplest ways to improve worker health. Employees love this flexibility. Seventy percent of full-timers admit that they dislike sitting all day. Reducing the amount
of time spent sitting at work lowers the risk of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and even cancer. Cutting sitting time by just three hours a day can increase life expectancy by two years. Other firms are experimenting with active design by adding outdoor workspaces, healthy onsite food options and light, airy rooms. Natural lighting has been linked to improved moods and better sleep quality — nearly one more hour per night. That makes for a more engaged and productive workforce. These investments in smart design pay off. When companies improve the health of their sickest workers, those employees become 11 percent more productive, according to a new study. Americans say they want to make their health a priority — but often fail to follow through. Their employers can help, often unbeknownst to them, by adopting the principles of active design.

2017 Holiday Spending Season to See Strong Growth By Desert Star Staff WASHINGTON, -The Electronic Transactions Association (ETA) and The Strawhecker Group (TSG) today released their 2017 Holiday Spending Report Card that indicates an extremely healthy holiday shopping season. The report analyzes same store sales from over 3.5 million card accepting U.S. merchants to project year-over-year growth. Holiday season sales will be driven primarily from strength in the Northeast region, and growth nationally at hotels, restaurants, shoe stores and building material stores. “Low unemployment, coupled with consumer confidence near a 17-year high, is bolstering an already healthy economy,” stated Jared Drieling, Director of Business Intelligence of TSG. “Coming into this holiday season, shoppers have seen an increase in personal income – especially disposable income – which is helping build off of a 2016 holiday season that was one of the best in years.” Holiday Shopping Season Continues to Shift Earlier The holiday season no longer begins the day after Thanksgiving. In 2017, big-box retailers began to aggressive push holiday promotions in early November, expanding traditional Black Friday deals into the first part of the month. Consumers are following retailers lead and conducting much of their holiday shopping in November, building on the tremendous growth from the previous year (3.9 percent growth in 2017 and 6.5 percent growth in 2016). Sales Growth Seen Outside of Traditional Holiday Retailers While overall year-overyear spending during the season is projected to grow, not all retailers will benefit. Sales from non-traditional leisure retailers will be the big winners, indicating a rise in
experiences rather than goods. “Shoppers are coming to stores willing to spend this holiday season. Two of the big trends for 2017 holiday spending are the rise of experiences and an earlier start to the holiday shopping season,” said Jason Oxman, CEO of ETA. “Holiday shoppers aren’t spending only at traditional retailers, but are spending more on restaurants and hotels. The 2017 holiday season inches earlier into the year as big box retailers start ‘Black Friday’ deals as early as November 1.” Spending at restaurants/ eating places (up 3.8 percent in November and 3.6 percent in December) and hotels/ lodging (up 4.3 percent in November and 4.2 percent in December) are the top winners in national sales year-over-year growth this season. Promising growth from shoe stores (up 12.7 percent in November and 10.1 percent in December) and lumber and building material stores (up 10.7 percent in November and 10.2 percent in December) will contribute to overall spending growth. Big box retailers are impacting sales at vertical retailers of traditional holiday gifts as consumers use general merchandise stores as one-stop-shops for all their purchases. Sporting goods (-6.3 percent in November and -4.6 percent in December) and jewelry stores (zero growth in November and -3.2 percent in December) will experience declining or little year-over-year growth. Strong Sales in the Northeast Contribute to Robust Growth Retailers in the Northeast expect to see the strongest year-over-year growth (November 6.4 percent and December 5.3 percent) while the Southwest trails behind (-0.3 percent November and 0.4 percent December). information on their packaging. “They had misleading labels,” she said. “So, they had labels that said they’re not for children under eight, however they also had a three-plus label.” Magnets and button batteries present extra concerns as choking hazards, since they can cause severe
damage to a child’s digestive system and take extra time to be discovered in their bodies. To make sure smaller toys don’t present a choking hazard to young children, Carver recommended testing it out with a toilet paper roll. If the toy fits inside the roll, it could get lodged in a child’s throat.
Child Security and Misleading Labels Top Concerns By Desert Star Staff RALEIGH, N.C. -- This Black Friday and Cyber Monday, you may want to take the time to read labels and carefully consider toys you buy for the children in your life. The U.S. Public Interest Research Group released its Trouble in Toyland report this week, and while concerns over small parts or lead can place toys on the list, technology creates new concerns. The doll My Friend Cayla is on the list. It has Bluetooth capability that NC PIRG’s Kristen Carver said is cause for concern. “Your child can ask it questions and it talks back www.desertstarweekly.com
to you,” Carver said. “It has an unsecured Bluetooth connection. Anybody can really access it and could potentially listen in on things that are going on in your home.” The FBI recently issued a warning against toys that include unsecured technology, and the doll is banned in Germany. The company has insisted in public statements that the doll is safe. PIRG also found high amounts of lead in fidget spinners sold at Target. The retailer has since removed those from its shelves. Carver said there were also problems with toys found in dollar stores that had conflicting

HOROSCOPES ARIES
It’s possible you will review something from the past that was a deep loss –a person, resource, marriage, an intimacy. Review this loss and turn it around. Make it a gift, a power received, something of great value to you. Review all desires and aspirations. Do you know the difference? Ask everyone around what they value in you. You will learn new things.
TAURUS You must ponder upon new, different, more inclusive ways of communicating. You realize it’s important to listen with curiosity, asking questions (instead of solving problems) when others speak. With deep listening great insights occur for both listener and speaker. Search for ways to have more trust. Then you can reveal the deep hidden truths about yourself without fear.
GEMINI Care for your health in all ways, from morning till night. Make this your priority. Begin with morning exercise before eating. Move onto green smoothies (almond milk, kale, chard, lemon, beets, parsley, apple, pear, spirulina, chaga, barley grass powder). Make cilantro pesto. Eat an avocado a day. Something, both dissolving and refining, occurs with work. Seek to understand a partner’s sorrows. Listen & observe. Maintain quiet.
NOVEMBER 29 – DEC. 6, 2017 ASTROLOGICAL FORECAST BY RISA D’ANGELES
CANCER
You will consider what in the past brought you joy, what helped you be creative, and what you were enthusiastic about. You will realize you’ve become more than you thought you would be. Nonverbal ways of expressing yourself are appropriate now. Spend most time in gardens, museums, places with art, creativity and beauty. Explore all of nature and what it means to be your natural self.
LEO You may see family and friends from the past, perhaps from childhood. Family may seek to include you in celebrations, attempting to relive their past, which you have set aside. You remember younger years, when you were free and wandering, when the light you lived under came only from the firelight, sun and stars. Impressions from the past seek new interpretations. Plant blue morning glories inside & outside the home.
VIRGO Over and over the same thoughts and ideas circulate through your mind. You want to discover all aspects of a puzzle, attempting to put it together. Thoughts come to mind but you are unable to articulate many of them. In this unusual silence, your eyes see more than ever before. It’s as if your senses shifted. As one sings, the other
doesn’t. Seek to understand everyone’s truths. Let them stand equally with your truths.
LIBRA When you look around at your living and working and garden environments, you realize you’ve come to love and appreciate and value all of them. They offer a specific calmness and orderliness that you need. They soothe your spirit and provide your life with daily context. They relieve anxiety. You realize you’ve had this all along, since birth. The change has occurred within. Have gratitude for the past. It built your present.
SCORPIO Over the next several weeks and a bit beyond you assess your self-image. Not what others think of you but what you think of yourself. And then you begin to create a new image. No longer an outer persona, but one more in depth presented to the world. You no longer need to veil, arm or protect a selfimage that’s no longer real. You are more and more authentic. There’s nothing to lose, nothing to gain. You’re the Buddha on the road.
SAGITTARIUS Sorrows and sadness from the past seek a new state of gladness to replace them. All thoughts begin to be clothed in compassion. There’s no longer the question of why.
There’s only the feeling of goodness, that life’s precious and paradox is acceptable. You will walk through a door in the next several weeks. You will open that door and then shut it behind you. You will see a mountain with an ascending light. You glimpse of your life ahead. Get good shoes.
CAPRICORN During this retrograde time, be very aware of new insights, new revelations and new understanding appearing quietly and subtly. All previous experiences, especially sadness, coalesce into new states of knowledge. An old friend makes contact; strange twists and turns of relationships begin to ease. Defeat becomes triumph. Speak your mind with truth at all times. Allow others to adapt to you. Frustration turns to opportunity. Art calls.
AQUARIUS You don’t allow any glamorous nonsense to be in your life. Everything seems to be changing every moment. This will continue. You will seek stability wherever you find it. New revelations occur. New thinking. Use all of these in your work, present them to the world, allow others to respond and exteriorize whatever is in them. You know your path. It’s always the surprising unusual view. Community calls.

Mental Illness, Mass Shootings Not Linked

would have little, if any, impact. News coverage of the November 14 shootings at a school in Rancho Tehama, Calif., focused on the shooter’s mental history. President
Donald Trump called the church shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas, a week before “a mental health problem.” But according to Dr. Larry Davidson, a psychology November 29, 2017
professor at Yale University Medical School, only 2 percent of gun violence is committed by people with serious mental illness. “The vast majority of people who commit such acts are very much in touch with reality, it’s just a very painful reality that they’re in touch with,” Davidson said. “It’s not that they’ve lost their grounding in reality.” Advocates in the mental health treatment community fear that statements linking mass shootings to mental health only serve to further stigmatize people with mental illness. A 2016 report by the American Psychiatric Association suggests that focusing on behavior, coping skills and conflict resolution would be more effective. Davidson pointed out that people with serious mental illness are more in danger themselves than they are a danger to others. “People with psychosis
Up till now you’ve had a firm grasp of what you want in your future. This is and will change in the coming months. You will accept where you are and the situations you’re in. Davidson said studies have shown that people with mental illness are 14 times more likely to be victims of violence than the average person. He noted that the incidence of mental illness is consistent from country to country, but there are far more mass shootings in the U.S. than any other developed nation. “It’s not that there are 40 times as many people with mental illness in the U.S. as in the U.K. It’s just that there’s that much more easy access, not just to guns, but to military-style guns,” Davidson said. Following a mass shooting in 1996, Australia enacted strict gun control laws. There hasn’t been a single mass shooting in that country in 21 years. www.desertstarweekly.com
Celebrating Nebraska’s Native American Past, Present, Future By Desert Star Staff LINCOLN, Neb. – Friday is Native American Heritage Day, and November is Native American Heritage Month. The executive director of Humanities Nebraska, Chris Sommerich, hopes the observances help folks to realize there are people who have been living on the Plains for thousands of years, much longer than those who emigrated here from other countries. He adds that Native Americans are not just an element of our history, but part of who we are today. “There’s still vibrant culture and groups of Native Americans in Nebraska that are thriving and that are there among everyone else,” he stresses. “It’s not just some element of our history. This is part of who were are today and part of our shared identity as Nebraskans. “ There are four federally recognized tribes in Nebraska: the Omaha Tribe, Santee
Sioux Nation, the Ponca Tribe and the Winnebago Tribe. More than 10,000 Native Americans are estimated to live on Nebraska’s reservations. Throughout the month of November, Sommerich says, schools, libraries, community groups and other organizations have held events highlighting the culture and lives of Nebraska’s Native American tribes. “An Arapaho speaker did a program on telling children’s stories, animal stories and traditional Lakota stories,” he relates. “Homestead National Monument did a program on Plains Indians heritage, Hastings did a program on lifestyles of the Lakota. And David City had another program on storytelling.” But, Sommerich notes, Native American issues should be supported year-round. One particular challenge Humanities Nebraska is working on is the preservation of native languages.

important to preserve and our challenge is to be helpful in any way we possibly can. “ There has been some criticism that the Native American Heritage Day observance is held on the same day as Black Friday, noting that is a
Wildlife Advocates Condemn Drilling Plan

AT T H E M O V I E S It may come as quite a surprise to you to learn that the women of Switzerland fought for the right to vote for 100 years. In 1959, 67% of Swiss men voted against that ballot and the struggle continued until February 7, 1991* when that law was finally passed. The story of one woman’s struggle to be treated as an equal to men magnificently unfolds in writer and director Petra Volpe’s “The Divine Order,” Switzerland’s fascinating entry for the Best Foreign Language Oscar. Combining the idea of the militant women from Aristophanes’ “Lysistrata” with the character of Nora, from Henrik Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House,” Volpe gifted us with a most compelling film. Under her acute, sensitive direction, we meet Nora, wonderfully played by award-winning actress Marie Leuenberger who burrows her heart and soul into her character. She lives in a small village in Switzerland and as a typical housewife, spends her days vacuuming, dusting, washing dishes, and carefully hanging out socks to dry on the exterior clothesline, which one could interpret as a metaphor. Despite being married to her loving husband Hans, skillfully played by Max Simonischek, he is a typical male who is a product of his life and times regarding women’s role in society. Nora is growing restless with a gnawing sensation that she
wants to do more with her life than be a housewife, mother, and caretaker for her aging, unpleasant fatherin-law. While going through the newspaper one morning, she comes across a help wanted ad for Swiss airlines and secretly applies for that position. Remember, this is early 1971 and not only can’t women vote, they must secure the permission from their husbands to work outside the home, which Hans, being quite happy with the status quo, says “no,” - not in a mean way, but reflective of the mores under which he was brought up and still living under. Being a product of her own upbringing, Nora is not sure how to get what she wants. One day while biking into town, she encounters a suffragette who is fighting for equality for women and gives the reluctant Nora literature on the movement. After absorbing the ideas outline in those pamphlets, and as the beautifully written narrative unfolds, Nora not only joins the movement but becomes one of the key organizers working closely with three other determined women superbly characterized by Rachel Braunschweig (Theresa,) Sibylle Brunner (Vronia,) and Marta Zoffoli (Graziella.) Despite her husband and sons being teased and shunned by their friends, Nora remains steadfast and mobilizes the other women in the village.
WITH BEVERLY COHN
The Swiss women march for equality. Photo Courtesy of Zodiac Pictures. Like the defiant women in “Lysistrata,” who withheld sex from their husbands until they agreed to stop going to war, Nora’s women are all now living under one roof and vow to stay there until the upcoming election which once again has the right to vote for women on the ballot. In the meantime the husbands tackle the chores their wives have heretofore been responsible for and, as you can imagine, there are some funny scenes with Hans and his boys as he tries to prepare meals but often winds up with pizza. Nora organizes a town meeting to try to educate the men who are almost immovable. One anti-vote woman argues that they should put to a vote how many men would agree with Nora’s position and as one might expect, the hands of almost all the men shot up in defiance. One man threw a wadded up piece of paper, which landed on Nora’s nose, but there is not a hint that her life is actually in danger. Her husband does encounter some violent moments and what’s interesting is that his character, as well as some of the other characters, has an
arc so that there is perceptible growth and awareness. Augmenting the leading characters, Volpe assembled an excellent supporting cast of women and men who, under her strong direction, deliver fully actualized characters and include, Bettina Stucky, Peter Freiburghaus, Therese Affolter, Ella Rumpf, Nicholas Ofczarek, and Sofia Helin. It is also commendable that she does not vilify the men but more shows them as being victims of their own upbringing and their struggles with trying to understand their women. In addition to the superb cast, the film has a highly textured, almost poetic look as exquisitely shot through the eye of cinematographer Judith Kaufmann, enhanced by Annette Focks’ original music, Hansjörg Weissbrich sharp film editing, Su Erdt’s striking production design, and Linda Harper’s perfect period costumes. “The Divine Order” is particularly relevant and timely as although the 19th Amendment to the American Constitution, ratified on August 18, 1920, gave women the right to vote, we are presently in the midst of

a different kind of revolution as women finally have the courage to step forward and talk about sexual harassment that has been swept under the rug for decades. Volpe’s film illuminates the bravery of the Swiss women who could not be intimidated out of their commitment for equality, and perhaps in a subtle way, supports their American sisters who have been silent for far too long. *It should be noted that not all local governments or Cantons enforced the vote. Appenzell Innerrhoden voted against women’s suffrage in 1973, 1982, and again in 1990 but later in that year, the Swiss Supreme Court forced then to comply. “THE DIVINE ORDER” Written & Directed By: Petra Volpe Producers: Reto Schaerli & Lukas Hobi Distributor: Zeitgeist Films Genre: Drama Language: Swiss German & German with English Sub-titles Rating: No Rating Running Time: 96 minutes Currently Playing: Laemmle Royal, Santa Monica

5 Ways to Get Your Home Ready for the Holidays By Desert Star Staff Whether you’re hosting or just trying to get into the holiday spirit, preparing your home doesn’t have to be daunting or expensive. Check out these five tips for getting your home in tip-top holiday shape on any budget from the experts at Dollar General: Deck the Dining Table: Get your dining table holidayready by purchasing staple décor pieces that can be rotated throughout the year. Fill glass vases with seasonal items such as ornaments, holly, faux snow or pinecones. Add extra light and warmth to the table with a flameless LED pillar candle. Place tea lights in small vases filled with cranberries, holly and water for an inexpensive and festive way to decorate the table. Decorate the Tree: If you’re looking for a fun way to get kids involved in holiday decorating, purchase plain ornaments for them to design with paint or pens. Clear ornaments can
be filled with glitter or tinsel to create a unique look for your tree. Decorated ornaments also make great and thoughtful gifts. Embellish your tree by adding red or burlap ribbon from the top of each side and adding a topper. Then, consider coordinating the color scheme of your tree with gifts, using those that were wrapped early as decor throughout your house. Deck the Front Door: Make a DIY wreath by gluing bows or pinning ornaments to a foam wreath. Designing your own door decor doesn’t have to be expensive, and it will allow you to add your own personal touch to your home’s entryway. Complete the look with festive outdoor lighting. Affordable options are available at such variety stores as Dollar General. Design a Festive Mantle: Decorate your fireplace mantle for the holidays without spending much time or money. Wrap a garland in mini string lights and hang leftover ornaments to continue the
theme from your tree. Create handmade bows to place at each end of the mantle using your choice of ribbon. If you don’t have a mantle, you can create a fireplace-like space with a cluster of string lights or LED candles in a nook of your home. Then, remember to hang the stockings! Create a Cleaning Game Plan: The holidays can be fun, festive and messy. Create a
day-by-day cleaning game plan, focusing on one area of your house at a time. This will save you stress and allow you more time to get organized. By Desert Star Staff News that Prince Harry and his fiancée Meghan Markle will be tying the knot in spring 2018 hasn’t been greeted with universal joy from the wider public. A large number saw it as a chance to unleash on social media and hit out at the “millions and millions” that will go towards staging yet another royal wedding – while, for example, the number of people flocking to food banks reaches a record high. Saying ‘no one cares’, Mitch Quirk added in a comment on Facebook post: “Millions and millions spent on another pointless royal event while hundreds of thousands have to www.desertstarweekly.com
use food banks.” One pointed out that the millions come straight out of British taxpayers’ pockets. Another attacked Markle personally, saying she will merely add to the bill being footed by the public to maintain the monarchy. Others criticized the media for giving so much attention to the Prince’s engagement when there are so many other burning issues that could be covered, asking for “news”. One Facebook user used the occasion to have a go at the royal family, which he said was using the wedding to “fool” its people. But should the Conservative government be the one taking the blame?

Supreme Court denies petition to hear water rights case By Desert Star Staff The United States Supreme Court announced today it will not review a court decision in a lawsuit that the Agua Caliente Tribe filed against Coachella Valley Water District (CVWD) and Desert Water Agency (DWA) in 2013 seeking unprecedented rights to groundwater, superseding all other water users. The decision from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, granting superior rights to groundwater to the Tribe will remain in effect. “We are disappointed in the decision because we believe the water in this valley is a shared resources that belongs to everyone,” said
CVWD Board president John Powell, Jr. “The Tribe has always had access to as much water as they requested, but now they have secured a water right that is superior to every other resident and business in the Coachella Valley.” Water rights have always been shared by the public, including the Agua Caliente and its approximately 440 members. The Agua Caliente has not said publicly how much water the Tribe wants access to or how it would use that water. Following this decision, the water agencies expect a lengthy and expensive legal process for all water users in the Coachella Valley. The
federal District Court will likely need to engage in a full groundwater adjudication, dividing the water resources between the Agua Caliente Tribe and the residents, businesses, agricultural and golf communities and other tribes. Rates will likely increase as water availabilty becomes more limited. “This case could completely change water management in our area, said DWA Board President Jim Cioffi. “We will continue to protect the interests of the community through this lawsuit and any efforts to divvy up local groundwater rights.” CVWD and DWA have
carefully managed local water resources through years of drought for the community as a whole. The Tribe’s control over groundwater could frustrate attempts to manage groundwater for the future and undermine the state’s groundwater regulation system. The Tribe is a private entity that is not required to comply with state sustainability laws or share water management information. The Coachella Valley’s water supply is now in uncharted territory. Western states have developed complex legal regimes and permitting systems to protect groundwater basins from ever-
Digging Deep for a Climate Change Reversal
Rotational grazing of cattle could help soil better sequester carbon and help fight climate change. (U.S. Department of Agriculture/Flickr) By Desert Star Staff VANCOUVER, Wash. -- A pivotal tool for fighting climate change could be hiding deep below our feet.
Researchers have found soil holds more than threetimes as much carbon as the atmosphere, and that minerals deep in the dirt
are key to its storage. With better land management, they say, this capacity could be used to reverse the increasing levels of carbon
President Donald Trump ruffled some feathers by once again referring to Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren as “Pocahontas.” He did so at a White House ceremony honoring the WW2 Navajo code talkers, prompting accusations of racism and insensitivity. Trump honored three Native Americans, all in their 90s, who helped the US Marine Corps develop a secret code using the Navajo language during the Second World War. “I just to say thank you because you’re very, very special people. You were here long before any of us were here,” Trump said. “Although we have a representative in Congress who, they say, was here a long time ago. They call her Pocahontas.” Turning to the veterans, Trump added, “But, do you know what? I like you.” The president’s critics took this as a reference to Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts), who controversially claimed Native
American heritage in her earlier career as a college professor. During the event, Trump also referred to White House chief of staff John Kelly as “Chief,” and stood under the portrait of President Andrew Jackson, who signed the Indian Removal Act in 1830, ordering the forcible relocation of Native tribes to present-day Oklahoma. The Navajo lands are in presentday Arizona and New Mexico. Trump’s nickname for Warren “smacks of racism,” John Norwood, general secretary of the Alliance of Colonial Era Tribes, told NBC News. “The reference is using a historic American Indian figure as a derogatory insult and that’s insulting to all American Indians.” Norwood added that the president should “stop using our historical people of significance as a racial slur against one of his opponents.” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders took issue with
reporters who characterized the remark as a racial slur during the daily press briefing on Monday afternoon. “I think what most people find offensive is Senator Warren lying about her heritage to advance her career,” Sanders told reporters. Trump has repeatedly used the nickname to mock Warren, specifically her claims of Native American heritage during her time at Harvard Law School in the 1990s. Warren has recently clashed with Trump over the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. She was one of the driving forces behind the agency’s establishment under the Obama administration. The agency is currently run by dueling directors, after Trump and the outgoing director both appointed people to run the consumer watchdog. Warren is also rumored to be a contender for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020. Pocahontas was an important historical figure, romanticized in the 1995
dioxide in the atmosphere. Marc Kramer, a researcher at Washington State University Vancouver, has been studying farming practices that increase carbon sequestration. He said when a technique involving the rotational grazing of cattle was used, the soil began to stash away carbon - and it quickly started to resemble native forest soils from before heavy land development. “What we found is that intensive grazing dairy activities in Southeast Georgia were able to restore organic matter content to preEuropean levels in as little as six years,” Kramer said. Kramer and his colleagues at Oregon State University, Stanford University, and other institutions found that over
increasing demands on water resources. The decision will drastically complicate, and in some locations could entirely defeat, these state and local efforts to manage groundwater resources efficiently. This is why ten states and multiple organizations weighed in to support the local water agencies’ petition to be heard by the Supreme Court. Phase 2 of this lawsuit, deciding whether the Tribe owns storage space within the groundwater basins is currently underway. For more information about this lawsuit, visit www.dwa.org/ lawsuits or www.cvwd.org.
half the planet’s carbon is stored more than a foot below the earth’s surface. They published these findings in the Annual Review of Ecology, Evolution and Systematics. The scientists said land cultivation has decreased carbon in the soil by one-half to two-thirds. But Kramer said if the trend moves in the opposite direction, dirt could do some of the heavy lifting in fighting climate change. “It’s not an unreasonable expectation that given the right management activities, we could retain quite a bit more carbon in the soil and potentially offset the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere,” he said. Kramer said carbon forms strong bonds with minerals in the soil, especially three feet and deeper beneath the surface. And is likely able to fix the carbon there for a long time.

Mulvaney immediately issues 30-day hiring freeze
By Desert Star Staff Straight after taking charge of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, White House budget director Mick Mulvaney issued a 30-day hiring freeze and implemented new rules. An Obama-era holdover, however, has filed a lawsuit to thwart the takeover. Mulvaney imposed new rules and a hiring freeze Monday, after taking over the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) at the behest of President Donald Trump. Mulvaney took over the agency after former CFPB Director Richard Cordray left his role last week. However, former interim
deputy director of the CFPB Laura English, who was appointed as temporary head of the agency by Cordray, filed a lawsuit in US District Court for the District of Washington late Sunday, against Mulvaney’s takeover. On Monday in Washington DC, English’s case was heard by Federal Judge Timothy J. Kelly, who was previously appointed by President Trump. After the case was heard, Judge Kelly ultimately declined to issue a temporary restraining order against Mulvaney, as was requested by English. Before Kelly’s decision Monday, Mulvaney said at a press conference
that “elections have consequences at every agency, and that includes the CFPB,” the Los Angeles Times reported. Mulvaney also elaborated on his hiring freeze at the CFPB, adding: “Anything in the pipeline stops for at least 30 days.” Mulvaney was seen on Monday bringing donuts to his first day on the job at the CFPB. Cordray had announced that he planned to resign his office by the end of November. He was appointed by President Barack Obama and has been long criticized by Congressional Republicans as overzealous.
English’s lawsuit calls on the Trump administration to block the appointment of Mulvaney as interim director. English is seeking an injunction ordering Trump to halt the Mulvaney appointment. The suit argued Mulvaney can’t be director because he already reports directly to the president. Реклама 57 English argued there was a statutory conflict between the Dodd-Frank Act and the Federal Vacancies Reform Act over who has the right to appoint an interim successor at the agency. “The President may not, consistent with the statutory requirement of independence, install a still-serving White House staffer as the acting head of an independent agency - particularly when doing so would displace an acting head who has a clear legal entitlement to the position,” the lawsuit said. The Trump administration retorted that there was no statutory conflict, and that the president had every authority to appoint the new agency head. “The law is clear: Director Mulvaney is the acting director of the CFPB,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement. CFPB’s general counsel, Mary McLeod, drafted a memo supporting the Trump administration’s position. “I advise all Bureau
personnel to act consistently with the understanding that Director Mulvaney is the acting director of the CFPB,” McLeod wrote, according to the American Banker. The CFPB director is supposed to be shielded from politics because of the judicial and law enforcement functions of the job, which involve filing enforcement actions and deciding appeals. The CFPB get its funding from the Federal Reserve and its director is giving significant leverage to go after what he or she considers important. The Dodd-Frank Act, which created the CFPB, explicitly specified the role of the president. It states that the president can nominate a CFPB director who is confirmed by the Senate and can only fire the director “for cause.” It said nothing about the director resigning, however. Under the leadership of Cordray, its first director, the CFPB implemented and proposed new rules and regulations for the banking industry. The agency also took legal action against banks, mortgage companies, credit issuers, payday lenders, debt collectors and others, and extracted billions in settlement. When Wells Fargo was found to have opened millions of phony accounts for its customers, the CPFB fined the bank $100 million, the agency’s largest penalty to date.
Chicago bakery loses one-third of staff to immigration raids
By Desert Star Staff A Chicago, Illinois bakery that makes McDonald’s hamburger buns is struggling after a third of its workers were detained by immigration enforcement. The company is facing pressure to raise wages in order to attract replacements. About 800, or 35 percent, of the workers at Cloverhill Bakery had to be replaced, reported Bloomberg News, citing the Zurich-based Aryzta AG. The company makes baked goods for fast-food chains and supermarkets. The workers were supplied by a jobplacement agency that faced federal audits earlier this year. “It’s proceeding very, very slowly because it’s like having a brand-new factory and a brand new workforce,” CEO Kevin Toland said on a call with analysts. “That’s presenting a lot of challenges, as you can imagine.” Toland said the raid of Cloverhill caused the company to face pressure to raise wages and challenges in retaining staff. The raid also led to a 7 percent decline in sales in North America in the quarter ending in October, and will eventually

lead to higher consumer prices. In the first six months of President Donald Trump’s administration there was a spike in the number of immigrants arrested by federal agents in Chicago. Data from the US Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE) revealed an approximate 30 percent increase in arrests and deportations in Chicago compared to the end of the Obama administration. “It’s been basically emergency after emergency for most of the year,” Tania Unzueta, a Chicago activist with the national Mijente organization, a Latino organizing group, told the Chicago Tribune. “From immigration raids to members of our organization being called to do check-ins and really not knowing whether they could be detained or deported.” The Chicago Immigration Court has 24,844 pending cases in its system as of this spring, according to the DOJ’s Executive Office for Immigration Review. That is up from 13,000 pending cases in 2010. Nationally, the pending caseload has doubled since 2011.
According to EOIR, total orders for removal between Trump’s inauguration and the close of the fiscal year hit 63,634. At the end of fiscal year 2017, some 1,940 people were detained in Chicago, up from 1,669 at the end of the prior year. Most of them are of Mexican descent, statistics show. The Trump administration set in motion sweeping changes in how the federal November 29, 2017
government dealt with those living in the US illegally. It is estimated there are 11 million immigrants living the US without legal status. A January 25 executive order dispatched more than 100 immigration judges to immigration jails across the US. Nine of every 10 cases heard have led to federal orders to leave the US. Trump’s order also expanded the list of deportation
priorities to include any noncitizen who is charged with a criminal offense of any kind, or who is suspected of committing criminal acts, fraud or willful dishonesty while interacting with immigration officials. This is in addition to those who are subject to a pending order of removal, or have been previously deported and reentered the country.

Allison Janney to Receive Spotlight Award at PSIFF
KMIR News Staff Palm Springs, CA -Allison Janney will receive the Spotlight Award at the upcoming Palm Springs International Film Festival for her ``tour-de-force performance’’ as disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding’s mother in `I, Tonya,’’ organizers announced Monday. The Emmy Award-winning actress will be recognized at the festival’s Film Awards Gala on Jan. 2 at the Palm Springs Convention Center. She joins previously announced award honorees Timothee Chalamet, Gal Gadot, Gary Oldman and Sam Rockwell. “Allison Janney delivers a knock-out performance as Tonya Harding’s mother LaVona Golden in `I, Tonya.’ The usually charming Janney takes a compellingly dark turn as Tonya’s abusive, alcoholic
mother,’’ festival Chairman Harold Matzner said. ``For this outstanding performance, which is sure to garner awards attention, it is an honor to present Allison Janney with the Spotlight Award.’’ Past Spotlight Award winners include Amy Adams, Jessica Chastain, Bryan Cranston, Andrew Garfield, Helen Hunt, Rooney Mara, Julia Roberts and J.K. Simmons. Festival organizers say all of those recipients received Academy Award nominations in the year they were honored at the Palm Springs festival, with Simmons taking home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as an abrasive orchestra conductor in ``Whiplash.’’ The festival runs from Jan. 4 through Jan. 15. Palm Springs Transgender Day of Remembrance
KMIR Patrick Price Palm Springs, CA - A ceremony honoring hundreds of murdered transgender lives over the years is part of Transgender Day of Remembrance. But remembering those transgender lives lost because of violence, resonates throughout the Palm Springs community daily. Every second Sunday
of the month, the tables at Johnny Bongos on Arenas Road are packed with smiles and laughter but most importantly support. Many in attendance are transgender like Erica Thurman. “It’s like a city in a valley that’s so completely open and accepting,” she said. Others are transgender allies who come to support their friends and family but
that support hasn’t always been so strong in Palm Springs. In 1999, a Palm Springs transgender woman was brutally murdered and decapitated. Her body was found in Whitewater and her killer, never caught. “The system had pretty much forgotten her and it’s an unsolved crime. We thought it was really important to name it after her,” said
Thomi Clinton, Executive Director at Transgender Community Coalition. After her death, Clinton and others searched for relatives and friends who might’ve known the woman but they had no luck. They decided to give her a name, Raina Chessman. Today, her memory still lives through a memorial fund named after her, the Raina Chessman Fund. That fund helps support local transgender men and women. “We got settled in, we were completely overwhelmed. There was no money left,” said Thurman. Thurman applied for a loan from the fund after car troubles and struggling to make ends meet. She got approved and got the help she needed to get back on her feet. “Oh my God, that was just the boost that we needed to kind of be OK,” she said. Thurman says it’s one of the reasons she calls the Coachella Valley her home because she knows she’s supported when it’s needed the most. But for other communities across the country, transgender men and women struggle to stay alive. According to the Human
KMIR Kitty Alvarado Palm Desert, CA -Whether in store or online, shoppers are spending more money this holiday season. Shoppers say sales have been good online and in store. “Very good, the sales have been good, I like the Macy’s here,” says Teresa Velasquez from Cathedral City who says she started her holiday shopping on
‘Cyber Monday’, at the mall. First Data says sales from Thursday to ‘Black Friday’ were up almost 12 percent from last year, showing consumer confidence is up. Baron Lee says he avoids ‘Black Friday’ sales but shops in store on ‘Cyber Monday’ too, “I tend to stay away from black Friday I think, you know the deals are great and it’s good for people if they want to enjoy
it but for me I’m not a crowd person anymore,” adding that he also shopped online. Stacy Lee agrees, “After ‘Black Friday’ is the best time to come shopping and you get just the same amount of good deals ... it’s not crowded and it’s not crazy,” but he says he doesn’t miss the online deals either. Adobe Analytics says Americans spent more than
$5 billion shopping online on ‘Black Friday’, that’s up 17 percent but they expect a record ‘Cyber Monday’. Representatives with the Westfield Mall in Palm Desert says the mall was busy on ’Black Friday’ and expect positive numbers. Dannie Bradshaw, a volunteer with the Salvation Army says the busy day at the Westfield Mall translated
Rights Campaign, at least 25 transgender people were killed in 2017 so far. That surpasses 2016’s 23 murders and 2015’s 21 murders. The majority of this year’s murders were of transgender black women. The youngest victim, a 17-year-old and the oldest, a 59-year-old. From 2013 to 2015, HRC also says 53 transgender people were murdered and not one incident has been prosecuted or labeled as a hate crime. Thomi Clinton hopes those staggering numbers will push people into action. “Violence is rising, hate crimes are rising, insane things are happening more now and i think we just need to all pull together and support one another,” she said. Monday’s ceremony in front of the Palm Springs City Hall starts at 4 p.m. and goes until 8 p.m. with a candlelight vigil starting at 5 p.m. Speakers include the founder of Transgender Day of Remembrance, Gwendolyn Ann Smith, as well as l’Transparent’ actor Ian Harvle, and activist/author Ryan Sallans. The event is free to the public. Source: KMIR
to more donations, he says they were up, “They’re coming in real good a lot of people giving this year ... Jesus is the reason for the season.” The big seller this ‘Black Friday’: guns. The FBI says they received over 200,000 background check requests, up almost 10 percent from last year, an alltime record. Source: KMIR

Facebook to expand suicide prevention
By Desert Star Staff Facebook announced on Monday that, following successful tests in the US, it will roll out its pattern recognition software designed to scan for posts with suicidal intent to other countries, except in the EU. “When someone is expressing thoughts of suicide, it’s important to get them help as quickly as possible,” the company’s vice president for product management, Guy Rosen, said in a statement. The software uses pattern recognition to detect what could be indications of suicidal thoughts in posts, live streams and comments. According to Rosen, things as innocuous as comments with the questions “Are you ok?” and “Can I help?” can trigger the suicide
alert software. A specialized team of human workers is then alerted to deal with the potentially suicidal person posting or commenting. The world’s largest social networking site began testing the software in the US in March and has released few technical details about the program’s inner workings. When the company launched its Facebook live video broadcasting service last year, a raft of violent acts including murders, rapes and suicides proliferated on the platform - and the company’s image suffered from the resulting outrage. As a result, Facebook announced that it would hire an additional 3,000 people to monitor content.
Although the teen had not developed any explosives at the time of her arrest, she had already bought the acetone and hydrogen peroxide necessary to do so. Her two targets were the the Sydskolen school in Farevejle, where she was a student, and the Carolineskolen Jewish school in Copenhagen. Colding-Olsen was found guilty in May and sentenced to six years behind bars. She decided to appeal, which she lost on Friday. Two days later – on Monday – the teen received an even harsher punishment, and is now facing eight years in prison. At the time of her arrest, police found a note with the words “bomb attack against the infidels 8th January.” Several others were also found, bearing the words “jihad” and “Allahu Akhbar [‘God is Great’ in Arabic],” The

Local reported earlier this year, citing Ritzau news agency. Holbaek District Court Judge Peder Christensen said in May that she possessed materials to make the TATP explosive, also known as the ‘Mother of Satan.’ The explosive was used in the November 2015 Paris attacks, the 2016 Brussels bombings, and the May 2017 Manchester Arena bombing.
During her pre-trial detention, the girl wrote letters which were ultimately read to the court ahead of the original district court verdict. In one, the girl wrote that she deliberately did not wear a headscarf “to fool the disbelievers” into thinking she had not converted to Islam, AP reported in May. She converted to Islam in October 2015.

17yo Danish girl gets 8 years in prison for plotting school attacks
By Desert Star Staff A Danish girl who was found guilty of planning bomb attacks on two schools when she was 15 has received two additional years on her prison sentence, after appealing her verdict. She claims she became interested in ISIS because it was “exciting.” The girl in question, Natasha Colding-Olsen, from the town of Kundby, appeared not to have been living an ordinary teenage life after she made headlines in 2016 under grim circumstances. Back then, the girl was arrested and charged with planning attacks on the schools after acquiring chemicals for making bombs. She became the first female in Denmark’s history to be charged with terrorism. Colding-Olsen was put into pre-trial detention at that time, where her writing – and the stabbing of a worker with a piece of glass – further fueled the prosecution’s case.

Hilarious comedy farce “The Play That Goes Wrong” wows NYC
Photo by Jeremy Daniel. By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Most older theatre mavens and fans of a certain age will probably remember playwright George Kelly, and his 1936 satire/spoof “The Torch-Bearers”, a play about amateurs producing and performing in what we now call ‘community theatre’. Fifty-six years later, British playwright Michael Frayn struck gold with his hilarious and highly entertaining farce “Noises Off”. The “play-withina-play format also set in the world of theatre went on to become a huge hit, and the gold standard in comedy/ farce in London’s West End, and on Broadway. Now, arguably, the wildest and wackiest comedy/farce of them all is, once again, about ‘the world of theatre’ arriving in America in 2016 following a two-year run in London’s West End, where it won Best New Comedy at the 2015 Laurence Olivier Awards. “The Play That Goes Wrong”, is written by three talented British playwright/ actors: Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields, who are members of the London-based, Mischief Theatre Company. The current production now wowing New York audiences at the Lyceum Theatre on Broadway, features an all-American cast determined to solve “The Murder at Haversham Manor” is set in England on a dark and stormy night (is there any other kind night for A British mystery farce?), and once again this play also just happens to be a-play-withina-play format. The whodunit mystery presented by the faux “Cornley University Drama Society” is now the comedy hit of the 2017 Broadway season. Inventively directed by Mark Bell, this classic-style British farce must have auditioned every American actor in New York City who could muster a veddy British accent, and also understands the wild and frenetic farce genre that is so prevalent in www.desertstarweekly.com
Photo by Jeremy Daniel. many British comedies. Peter Sellers, Scottish actor Alastar Sim, Monty Python’s John Cleese, were all masters of the genre. It should be noted that director Bell hit the jackpot with his American cast as well. The two-level set designed by Nigel Hook is a deceptive and harmless looking creature that a first glance has all the visual trappings of an Agatha Christie play. A large Manor House drawing room, large fireplace, tapestries, the family Coat of Arms, along with the obligatory painting of the family patriarch over the fireplace. In reality, the set becomes another ‘character’ in the production, which in itself alone, is worth the price of admission. Once the onstage slapstick mayhem begins, the laughs are infectious and nonstop. “The Play That Goes Wrong” unfolds in a series of comedy scenes performed by the ‘amateur actors’ of the ‘University’s Drama Society’, as they struggle do their best to ‘remain in character’ despite loads of unexpected physical comedy sight gags, along with uncooperative props; sticky doors that won’t open, pictures that fall from the walls, and a host of miscues, and delayed entrances the whole ball of wax! It’s right out of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton playbooks. And it’s hilarious. The story, such as it is, follows the earnest but bumbling British police Detective Chris Bean (Mark Evans) in the ‘Play’ who’s desperately trying to solve the murder of Jonathan (Jonathan Fielding), as a corpse whose movements belies the designation ‘corpse’. The relatives and friends of Jonathan try to help detective Bean solve this dastardly deed, but to no avail. Instead, the group of clumsy but wellintentioned relatives: Akron Watson as Trevor, Preston Truman Boyd as Robert, Harrison Unger as Dennis, Amelia McClain as Sandra, Alex Mandell as Max, and Ashley Bryant as Annie, are priceless in their attempts to ‘normalize’ the on-stage zaniness. As a side note: I had the
good fortune at ATCA’s annual luncheon with Broadway actors at Sardis famous NYC restaurant two days later, to find myself being seated next to actor Ashley Bryant, who plays Annie. I politely leaned over and asked her if during the run have any of the cast sustained any injuries as a result of all the physical comedy taking place on stage? Ms. Bryant replied, “Not any serious injuries like broken bones, but we’ve all had our bruises, and a few aches and pains from doing
a physical show like ‘Play’ eight performances a week for almost six months. But it’s labor of love for actors.” The production is just too funny and entertaining to spoil the experience for those who want to see it. So, no spoiler alerts from me. In the technical department the award-winning set design by Nigel Hook is a work of mechanical miracles that allow the actors to perform in his topsy-turvy world of Haversham Manor, without missing a beat. The lighting
design by Ric Mountjoy, neatly compliment the costumes by Robert Surace. Sound design by Andrew Johnson, and original music by Rob Falconer, complete the creative team. “The Play That Goes Wrong” is the perfect gift for Anglophiles and theatre-goers over the Holidays. It performs at the Lyceum Theatre on Broadway and performs as an open-ended run. However, I wouldn’t wait. I would buy my tickets right now if you’re planning on being in New York over the Holidays.
