Golf Cart Parade 2018

Tru-Hero group for little boy Truman who is battling cancer. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 54th Annual Golf Cart Parade was held on October 28th. What a great way to spend a Sunday in the Desert. Thousands of people lined the streets of El Paseo. The theme this year was Super Heroes, in honor of all the service men and women and all the people who have earned the title of heroes. It was fun to see all the

kids that were dressed as a favorite superhero that was not a part of the parade but was just spectators to the fun day. Those that enter a float or a golf cart work hard to be recognized with the six awards handed out to the best of the day with a monetary prize and trophy. 2019 California Teachers of the Year By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO—State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson today named five extraordinary educators as the 2019 California Teachers of the Year. Torlakson, who began his career as a science teacher and coach, said he is pleased to honor five outstanding and talented teachers who have made a great impact in their schools and communities. “These five remarkable teachers deserve thanks and admiration for their deep commitment, hard work, and creativity,” he said. “They make profound differences in their students’ lives and provide students the tools they need to succeed. They’re an inspiration and an example of the exceptional work going on in California schools.” Presented by California Casualty and the California Teachers of the Year Foundation, the California Teachers of the Year Program began in 1972 to honor outstanding teachers and encourage new teachers to enter the profession. The 2019 winners are: Rosie Reid who teaches

English to ninth through twelfth grade students at Northgate High School, Mount Diablo Unified School District in Walnut Creek, Contra Costa County. Torlakson also nominated Reid as California’s representative for the National Teacher of the Year competition. Reid will compete against other state nominees, and a 2019 National Teacher of the Year will be named in the spring. Erica Boomer who is a ninth through twelfth grade agriculture teacher at Upper Lake High School, Upper Lake Unified School District in Upper Lake, Lake County. Kim Holz who is a fourthgrade multi-subject teacher at Opal Robinson Elementary, Manhattan Beach Unified School District in Manhattan Beach, Los Angeles County. Michael Henges who is a twelfth-grade government and economics teacher at Redondo Union High School, Redondo Beach Unified in Redondo Beach, Los Angeles County. Angel Mejico who is a seventh and eighth grade art teacher at El Cerrito Middle School, Corona-Norco Unified School District in Corona, Riverside County.

two youngest. Brown uses his music platform to advocate for veterans and adoption.

Torlakson, who launched a “Make the Switch: Become a Teacher” campaign this year, said these teachers will be great ambassadors for the profession. Due to California’s teacher shortage, he said, it is important to get the word out about the rewards of being a teacher. “Great teachers are the backbone of our education system. Teaching is a commitment to your community, your students, and most of all, a commitment

to the future,” he said. Visit the Teach California website for more information. County offices of education nominate California Teachers of the Year winners through their county-level competitions. A state selection committee reviews candidates’ application and conducts site visits to evaluate the teachers’ rapport with students, classroom environment, presentation skills, and teaching techniques. The teachers are interviewed by the

California Department of Education (CDE). The State Superintendent then selects the five awardees. The 2019 California Teachers of the Year, finalists, and semifinalists will be honored by Torlakson at a gala to be held in Sacramento on December 10, 2018. For more information on the award program, please visit the CDE’s California Teachers of the Year web page.

‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ Takes Flight on DVD

When you think about Marvel Comics heroes, you think big. Big like the Incredible Green Hulk. However, in the Ant-Man movies the two heroes, Ant-Man and the Wasp, are at their mightiest when they don their superhero suits and shrink to the size of a mighty insect. And it is excellent fun to watch them down-size when necessary, then return to full standard human size when danger is averted. However, for the bad guys, they are at their mightiest when they are tiny and can buzz off at will. The Ant-Man sequel, like

the first Ant-Man film in 2015, is directed by Peyton Reed and is now available on DVD and Bluray. If you didn’t see the first Ant-Man film you would still be able to figure out the characters and their back history pretty well--although it would be helpful if you saw the first movie. I did not, so at times I found myself a bit confused, especially about the current conflicted relationship between Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), the inventor of the Ant-Man suit and technology and Scott Lang, aka Ant-Man (an easy-going Paul Rudd).

As the film begins, Scott is under a two-year house arrest in his San Francisco home for something that happened in connection with Captain America. Randall Park plays the S.H.I.E.L.D agent assigned to keep an eye on Scott at all times until his confinement time is up. Under no circumstances is Scott allowed to leave his house, but he can have visits from his adoring daughter, Cassie (Abby Ryder Fortson), her mom (Judy Greer) and stepdad (Bobby Cannavale). He also can while away his time was playing the drums

and doing magic tricks. So things aren’t all that bad. Things heat up when Dr. Pym’s long-lost wife (Michelle Pfeiffer) appears to Scott in a dream. She has been shrunk to the molecular level and is missing in an inner-space region known as the quantum realm. When Scott awakens, he calls Pym and his daughter Hope (Evangeline Lilly) the Wasp and describes the dream Thinking this is a sign that his wife is still alive the doctor agrees to meet with his former colleague, Ant-Man. Things are not going well for the brilliant scientist and his equally gifted daughter. They have gone into hiding and have created a car so small it can not be detected by evil forces who want to steal his technological knowledge for their devious purposes. The good Doctor can also shrink his laboratory at will and carry it around like a suitcase. All these gimmicks are great fun to watch as the story unfolds. When Ant-Man makes contact with Pym and his daughter he has to leave his confinement secretly. This could get him into big trouble if the usually friendly S.H.I.E.L.D. agent ever finds out that he has

left the confines of his home. His clever escape maneuvers add to the fun of the plot. Ant-Man’s malfunctioning suit also gives way to plenty of sight gags when his size drastically changes from big to small or small to gigantic at very inconvenient times. To save Dr. Pym’s miniature, portable laboratory from the clutches of Sonny Burch (Walton Goggins) AntMan and the Wasp work together. They also have to protect themselves from Ava, also known as Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) who has fantastic, potentially destructive powers coupled with unbearable physical pain as a result of an experiment that has gone wrong. She is starting to fade away and will do anything to save herself. All these plot points speed along at a merry pace that will keep you on your toes. Along with suspense, there is plenty of humor embedded in this sci-fi flight of fancy with two strange sci-fi bugs, Ant-Man, and the Wasp. “Ant-Man and the Wasp” is rated PG-13 for some scifi action violence, Running time: 2 hours, 5 minutes.

“Steambath” at the Odyssey Theatre Runs Out of Steam in Short Order

L-R: John Moskal as “Oldtimer” and Jeff LeBeau as “Tandy.” Photo: Enci Box Bruce Jay Friedman’s satirical black comedy “Steambath,” which made its Off-Off-Broadway debut in 1971, is considered one of the greatest plays of the last century, receiving uniformly rave reviews. It has been resurrected, and under the direction of Ron, Sossi is currently on stage at the Odyssey Theatre. Unfortunately, this revival simply does not work. The premise of this old chestnut is God as a wisecracking Puerto Rican steambath attendant. This particular steam bath is a holding area where the newly deceased dwell until they tell

their stories before God after which they are commanded to walk through a door to the next level which appears to be a corridor illuminated by a bright white light. God mops the floor, wipes down the damp tiles, and puts out clean towels. In between his custodial duties, he issues a string of deadly commands to his gibberish-speaking computer, raining down havoc on the world below with car crashes and other life-ending catastrophes. Exquisitely played by well-known standup comedian Paul Rodriquez, who lights up the stage with his megawatt presence, God has a moment of compassion

when he sees an old woman who is heartbroken because her bird flew away and commands the wayward bird to fly home. He also feels sorry for a kid who was beaten up by the cops, so he decides to send him on a long vacation to Copenhagen. At one point, he makes reference to his son, the carpenter. God eats and drinks and is dutifully served by his butler Gottlieb, wonderfully played by Yusuf Yildiz, who not only serves as his devoted servant but also does an occasional tap dance when a distraction is needed. At one point God says, “I can get any food I want up here except lox – I can’t get fresh lox.” So who are the dead inhabitants of this steam bath representing the afterlife? Well, there’s the very talkative Oldtimer (John Moskal,) the Stock Broker (Brian Graves,) a pair of gay Young Men (Peter Pasco) and (Devan Schoelen) who sing and dance and hold hands. Apparently, they both loved the same man who spurned the two of them, so they committed suicide. Perched on a high step is Bieberman (Robert Lesser) who annoys Oldtimer by some of his disgusting habits such as belching, farting, spitting out orange pits, and clipping his toenails. The latest arrival is Tandy (Jeff LeB Eau) and a bit later Meredith (Shelby Lauren Barry) both of who very slowly realize they are dead. Meredith says she has to go home because “I have to pay my Bloomingdale’s bill!” and Tandy insists that he has to go back because he’s totally turned his life around and everything is in place for a new start, including writing a book on “Charlamagne” and his perfect new girlfriend. The Tandy character is the voice of doubt and keeps asking God

for proof of who he is, which he responds to by doing a card trick. This brings me to my next point. The first third of Act I is loaded with laugh lines that should have resulted in laughter from the audience. Instead, those lines landed like lead balloons, and the play didn’t come to any semblance of life until the Rodriguez entered the stage. He’s a real pro with impeccable comic timing which only served to spotlight the lack of energy from the rest of the cast, with Miss Barry’s performance as

to go through the door, he begs for his life, stating all the reasons why he deserves to live but as he reviews his past, he plays his own Devil’s advocate, questioning his reasoning for being spared. Another idea, with which the playwright dabbles, is the disorientation of people from a different generation who are stuck in their own time warp. Despite a less than satisfying production, one can understand what drew Ron Sossi to this provocative material. As Artistic Director

With God (Paul Rodriguez) watching in the background, DJ Kemp and Devan Schoelen play two gay friends in love with the same man. Photo: Enci Box Meredith more suited to a high school production. She should really work with a coach to rid herself of her strident vocal delivery. Rounding out the cast are Anthony Rutowicz and Shay Denison who make brief appearances in Act II. What is excellent about this production are the technical aspects including Gary Guidinger’s set design, Chu-Hsuan Chang’s lighting design, Christopher Moscatiello’s sound design, and Mylette Nora’s towel costumes. The shower sequences in Act I and II were especially well done with dense fog nicely masking naked bodies. The more subtle philosophical ideas put forth by the playwright are deftly revealed as the characters review their lives and come to surprising revelations. When it’s time for the Tandy character

of the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, he has been one of the amazing pioneers of outstanding, avant-garde works and we certainly look forward to his next production. PROPOSAL: Request for a one-year time extension (from October 11, 2018 to October 11, 2019) for Conditional Use Permit No 13-16; a project to repurpose an existing metal warehouse building (approximately 6,609 square feet) for an indoor cannabis cultivation facility on a previously developed 1.07-acre parcel (APN 665-030-053). ENVIRONMENTAL DETERMINATION: On October 11, 2016 the Planning Commission approved the Ocean Springs Tech Cannabis Cultivation Project and in doing so certified the CEQA Exemption for the project as a Class 1 Exemption, under Section 15301(a)(d)(e)(f) Existing Facilities. Pursuant to Section 15162(a) of the CEQA regulations, no further review is required once an environmental determination (Exemption, in this case) has been certified for a project, and there are no substantial changes to the project or new impacts that would warrant additional review. The Planning Commission only needs to make a finding that the request for the One-Year Time Extension is consistent with the original project and the CEQA Exemption, and that no substantial changes are being proposed, no additional impacts are being introduced, and no new mitigation measures are required. INTERESTED PERSONS MAY appear and be heard, or written comments may be submitted prior to the Public Hearing(s). Written comments will be made a part of the public record. Iowa Faith Leaders Rebuke Rep. King After Synagogue Massacre

By Desert Star Staff AMES, Iowa – In the wake of the shooting deaths of 11 people at a Pittsburgh synagogue, faith leaders are speaking out about Iowa Republican Rep. Steve King, known for endorsing Nazi sympathizers and tweeting white nationalist rhetoric. Letters have been sent to the state’s newspapers signed by 60 Iowans of various religions who called on elected officials to “stand

with Iowa’s Jewish community, denounce King’s actions and hold him accountable.” John Pleasants, president of the Ames Jewish Congregation, says King’s offensive rhetoric has diminished the state’s reputation. “For some of us, he has gone too far a long time ago, but I think a lot of his supporters kind of tolerated some of the statements that he’s made,” Pleasants states. “Really this time he has gone too far.”

In August, King met with far-right Austrians with historical Nazi ties while on a trip funded by a Holocaust memorial group. That led companies including Purina, Intel and Land O’ Lakes to end financial contributions to King. The National Republican Congressional Committee also announced it will not help fund King’s re-election bid. The congressman has called the attacks “fake news.” The Anti-Defamation

League, an organization that tracks anti-Semitism around the country, says the number of anti-Semitic incidents was nearly 60 percent higher in 2017 than 2016. Pleasants says no one is trying to directly link King to what happened in Pittsburgh, but he believes anti-Semitic statements can indirectly contribute to hate crimes. “It’s not just the Jewish community that’s gotten upset by this,” he stresses. “Our

Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists – they’re very saddened and concerned by the events in Pittsburgh and believe that there’s some link between the two of them.” For the first time, King’s hometown newspaper – the Sioux City Journal – endorsed King’s Democratic challenger in next week’s midterms. King has held his seat since 2012, and won his last two reelection bids with more than 60 percent of the vote.

Selkirk Sport Re-Signs Morgan Evans

By Pamela Price The link between the Marion Davies Estate in Rancho Mirage and the Marion Davies Guest House on the beach in Santa Monica is strong — they share a similar history, each reflecting Hollywood heritage, but in different glamorous styles. The Marion Davies Estate on Frank Sinatra Drive in Rancho Mirage was built in 1952 for actress Marion Davies, the lifelong mistress of William Randolph Hearst, and was recently renovated, right down to the chandeliers. It debuted this year as the Villa de Martini, welcoming special events, from weddings to private getaways. Marion Davies, who resided here in the 1950s, is remembered by an impressive life-size portrait placed over the fireplace, with a grand piano off to the left. Ten elegantly decorated bedrooms, all with private bathrooms, reflect mid-century glamour with lavish imported bedding to set the stage. The door to each bedroom suite echoes the memory of a Hollywood film star, from Marion Davies herself to Audrey Hepburn, Clark Gable, and Elizabeth Taylor. For events, contact www.villademartini. com, (760) 899-1782 This legendary Hollywood era resonates 165 miles to the west in Santa Monica where the original 7,000 square-foot oceanfronts Marion Davies Guest House and Beach House has survived and is now under the stewardship of the Santa Monica Conservancy. It’s adjacent to the Annenberg Community Beach House at Santa Monica State Beach. There are complimentary docent tours Thursday through Sunday at 11am, 12pm, and 1pm. These tours are limited to 15 guests, and walk-ins are welcome as reservations are not required. Find more details at www.annenbergcommunitybeachhouse.com Private events are welcome and held year-round; call (310) 4584904 for more information. The décor is memorable with an impressive gallery of black and white photographs recalling Hollywood film personalities and thoughtfully installed throughout the twostory Guest House. Several bathrooms on the second floor reveal exquisite mosaic tile work that has been faithfully restored, such as one of a Portuguese-inspired sailing ship. The antique chandeliers at the home’s foyer are original as well. It’s a discreet spotlight that shines on the actress and eventually philanthropist Marion Davies, who is best known for captivating the heart of William Randolph Hearst, the wealthy, influential newspaper publisher. As the story goes, he was infatuated with Davies after having seen her perform at a New York theatre in 1917. From

that moment, their legendary relationship blossomed. He was 54 years old, she was twenty. As their relationship developed, she eventually starred in silent films during the 1920s, later investing in real estate and involving herself with philanthropic projects. History also credits her for the terrific comedian as well. Marion Davies’ mesmerizing photographs are curated to perfection throughout the Marion Davies Guest House revealing her glamorous lifestyle while paying tribute to the aforementioned philanthropic contributions. The legend of Marion Davies is now brought to life expertly by docents who conduct tours that include a look at the fascinating black and documented in blue binder notebooks. The edgy glamour of 20th century Hollywood endures at both Marion Davies estates. Grace Robbins, author of the Hollywood-inspired book Cinderella and the Carpetbaggers say “ having an event at the former
