‘Armageddon’: CA on Fire State fire officials estimated that 17 separate wildfires Sweep Across Northern California; 15 Are Dead. By Desert Star Staff A score of wind-fueled wildfires broke out overnight in California’s Sonoma and Napa counties, burning tens of thousands of acres, destroying 1,500 structures and causing residents to flee their homes and businesses. Governor Jerry Brown
declared a state of emergency for Sonoma, Napa and Uva counties on Monday. The declaration authorizes the mobilization of the California National Guard to the wine country, north of San Francisco. There are no reports of injuries or deaths, so far. Taking all the fires into account,
more than 1,000 people have been evacuated, according to the Los Angeles Times. One fast-moving fire jumped the 101 Freeway, forcing a hospital in Santa Rosa to be evacuated and burning homes and businesses, witnesses said. All public schools in Santa
Rosa and Calistoga have been closed Monday. Residents described terrifying middle of the night scrambles to flee from raging wildfires. “People were running red lights, there is chaos ensuing,” Santa Rosa resident Ron Dodds told KTVU. “It’s a scary
time. It looks like Armageddon.” There was “zero containment” on two of the biggest fires, Cal Fire said in a mid-morning briefing on Monday. The Tubbs fire, which had spread from Calistoga to Santa Rosa in Sonoma County, has engulfed more than 25,000 Continues on Page 12

Story and Photos by Pat Krause Paris is an amazing city with its Eiffel Tower and museums. My daughter and I spent four days in Paris and didn’t even touch all that Paris has to offer. As a traveler in a foreign country, we used a lot of maps to get around and a special app on my daughter’s cell phone, called Citymapper. It made it so easy to get to a certain site we wanted to see. Of course, the Eiffel Tower is a must when you are in Paris. It is so tall, and the vista from the top is incredible. They say you can see 40 miles away and on a clear day I think is probably very true. You can
you had to get a sandwich out of a box in the wall. The underground is pretty up to date with escalators in London and Paris or lifts from the different levels. Great for someone elderly who hates steps. I will say the motorcyclists look like they take their lives in their own hands the way they zip in and out of traffic. Traffic is like rush hour all day long. The Arc de Triomphe was our first stop. We put going to the Eiffel Tower until the next day because we wanted to see it lit up at night. My daughter said it was only another 36 steps to the top to
walk to the second level but there is also a lift <elevator>. You have to take the lift that goes all the way to the top and WOW, what a view. We went through TripMasters for our trip. They did a great job in getting excellent hotel rooms and transportation for us at a very reasonable rate. We had a nice clean hotel room in Paris that offered a really good breakfast as part of the room stay. Paris is known for its sweet treats, but I had to go a long way for a donut. I found one in a McDonald’s, but it is so automated it reminded me from a long-ago time when
see the Lighting of the Tower, view, and it was worth it. The next stop was the Louvre. I was there 25 years ago but don’t remember it being so big with so many different rooms of artists. Being a lover of art and a former artist I was in heaven looking at all the revered artists of so long ago. These million-dollar paintings and statues just keep coming in every nook and cranny of the whole Louvre. Seeing Venus was a big thrill as I remembered her from so long ago and the thrill I got back then. People gathered around the Mona Lisa, and
it was hard to get close. Everyone was taking selfies with her portrait. It was no photos so long ago but now everyone has a cell phone and camera. People were taking photos of all the art but with no flash, different times. Walking into the Musee d’Orsay is breathtaking. It was an old railway station that was renovated into this grand Museum of Art. The hallway with the huge gold clock at the end is stunning. There were special rooms and floors for the different types of art and unique sections for certain artists. They hold exhibitions for one famous artist for several weeks. A must see if you travel to Paris looking for art. Another must see is Notre Dame. The views are truly fantastic. There is a lift to one level for viewing. There are also another 387 steps to the top to see the gargoyles and the best views. My daughter took the steps while I stayed behind to see the alter areas and the lesser Paris views. We took a ride on a boat that took us all along the waterway to see the beautiful old buildings in Paris. Again, it rained but we got pictures of the Eiffel Tower again. The boat was sparsely filled because of the rain, but we had bought tickets in advance and didn’t have another opportunity to take the ride. The bridges are magnificent with statues and art work. Gold bridge decorations and the restaurants that are moored in the river for diners are a vision to see. It was a fun and would not have missed the ride just because it was raining.

not required to allow mini pot farms in their communities. An increasing number of cities are banning smoking inside attached residential housing (and in other areas), and complaints and disputes are increasing within associations regarding smoking. The issue is the “second hand smoke” or smell which invades the adjacent homes, yards or balconies from a smoker’s unit. With the advent of “legal” marijuana use in California homes, associations may wish to discuss whether they wish to adopt use restrictions (by member vote) or rules (by board vote) to restrict or even ban the smoking and/or growing of marijuana in the community. If someone suffers from a disability which requires marijuana use, an association will be required by the Fair Housing laws to provide a reasonable accommodation to a person with a documented need for the drug. However, an association might not be required to allow smoking, given the existence of a number of other options to deliver the medical effects of marijuana. If a resident documents a disability requiring the intake of marijuana, the association should pursue an
interactive process (translation: talk to them) to explore if alternatives other than smoking are available to the resident. An accommodation creating a nuisance to neighbors is not “reasonable.” The smell of any smoke is most likely a nuisance if it invades hallways or individual residences. With changing laws and social conditions, associations need to periodically examine whether the policies in their governing documents meet the current needs of their communities. Thanks P.F. for your question.
the spouse is the sole Trust beneficiary. If the purpose of the trust was to avoid stacking benefits into the estate, the IRA owner could establish separate trusts for each child. In general, naming the surviving spouse as beneficiary is an advantageous selection for several reasons. The selection of the surviving spouse usually provides the most tax deferral opportunities for both income tax and estate tax purposes. The surviving spouse has the freedom of rolling the Inherited Qualified plan over to their IRA and gain the advantage of recalculating life expectancy annually, providing a longer period for payout and deferment until the surviving spouse reaches the age of 70 ½. Additionally, if the surviving spouse is the recipient of the IRA benefits and if the deceased spouse’s estate is estate taxable, then the distribution outright to the spouse would qualify for the marital deduction. A surviving spouse can defer the minimum required distributions until December 31 of the year in which the deceased spouse would have attained the age of 70½. They may also elect to treat the deceased spouse’s IRA as his or her own by rolling it into their IRA. Another option in selecting a beneficiary is to name a
partner to whom the account holder is not legally married. This choice is not as attractive as naming a spouse because an unmarried person cannot defer distributions until Dec. 31 of the year in which the deceased account holder would have been age 70½ had he or she survived. They cannot roll the money into a new IRA under their name. They may choose to role the funds to an Inherited IRA, under the five-year rule, where the assets must be distributed by December 31 of the fifth year from the retirement account owner’s death or role the benefit payment into an inherited IRA with benefits paid out under their life own expectancy. Unfortunately, the plan balance will not be sheltered by the estate tax marital deduction, which could expose the benefits to double taxation, having to pay income tax and estate tax. In fact, if the unmarried surviving partner is more than 37½ years younger than the deceased account holder, the plan benefits also could be subject to the generation-skipping transfer tax, although this will not be applicable where the partners are fairly close in age, which usually is the case. By naming a partner as the beneficiary, the account holder loses all dispositive control over who

Naming Beneficiaries in a Retirement Plan can be Tricky By Janice Gough Selecting the Beneficiaries of your Retirement Plan requires an understanding of the Internal Revenue rules for Qualified Plans. Under the Retirement Equity Act of 1984 (REA), a participant in a qualified retirement plan must obtain the written consent of the spouse in order to name a beneficiary other than the spouse. The REA restrictions are inapplicable to IRAs because IRAs are not covered by the applicable parts of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) and are not included in Internal Revenue Code Section 401(a)(11). When inheriting an IRA, one of the goals is to preserve the tax-advantaged status of the account for as long as possible. Oftentimes it is easier to split the IRA into multiple IRAs if you have multiple beneficiaries, rather than use a trust. Trusts as beneficiaries of IRAs can be very complicated. If it is not done properly, immediate income tax consequences could result. Where the deceased owner’s qualified plan benefit is transferred to a trust in which the surviving spouse is a beneficiary, the spouse loses the right to the required minimum distribution, even if

will receive the remaining benefit at the partner’s death. In naming children as beneficiaries, rules and considerations are similar to those of an unmarried partner. However, because, in the typical case, the children are in a generation below that of the original account holder, greater opportunity to defer taking minimum required distributions generally exists. By naming children as outright beneficiaries of plan benefits, the protection of having management of the funds and creditor protection is lost, additionally the spouse or unmarried partner, will not be entitled to any of the benefits, on which to live. The Inherited IRA permits younger beneficiaries, to use their own life expectancies for remaining distributions after the surviving spouse dies. The spouse, unmarried partner and children are the three most important beneficiaries to understand.

Responding to ICE Raids with Prayer Vigil
By Desert Star Staff PHILADELPHIA – Responding to ICE raids that targeted sanctuary cities, immigrants’ rights advocates gathered outside the agency’s Philadelphia office yesterday for a prayer vigil. Last week, agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement carried out “Operation Safe City,” rounding up almost 500 undocumented immigrants around the country. According to Peter Pedemonti, executive director of the New Sanctuary Movement of Philadelphia, the raids concentrated on cities that have passed laws or resolutions to help protect immigrants from deportation. “They targeted sanctuary cities,” he says. “In total, 107 people in Philadelphia were taken. This is very sad, when they’re tearing apart families as a form of political retaliation.”
In a statement, ICE director Tom Homan said sanctuary cities are “shielding criminal aliens and creating a magnet for illegal immigration.” But Pedemonti believes that Philadelphia’s designation as a sanctuary city has served the public good. “It’s reduced deportations, kept families together,” he adds. “It makes us safer as people have more trust in the city and the police, and it would really seem to benefit our whole city - for everybody, not just immigrants.” Immigrants’ rights advocates say insisting that communities aid in enforcing federal immigration policy creates distrust and prevents people from seeking health care, reporting crimes or testifying as witnesses. Operation Safe City was intended to send a message to sanctuary cities,
“Operation Safe City” detained more immigrants in Philadelphia than any other city in the country. (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and Pedemonti says the prayer vigil sends a clear message back to ICE. “Our strength is in coming
together, our strength is in connecting with our faith traditions, and making sure ICE knows that we’re not going
anywhere,” he states. “That they need to be accountable, and they can’t do this without anyone fighting back.”
Trump’s immigration plan revealed
By Desert Star Staff The White House has unveiled a set of immigration policies aimed at toughening up the existing laws and closing legal loopholes. The list envisions transforming the Green Card system, beefing up border security and facilitating deportations. The measures on the list released by the White House late Sunday are necessary to compensate for damages
that would be inflicted by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, if it is to stay intact, according to White House legislative affairs director Marc Short. “These priorities are essential to mitigate the legal and economic consequences of any grants or status to DACA recipients,” Short said. By Desert Star Staff MADISON, Wis. – Bringing the political conversation back to the local level is one of the aims of the Rebel Cities movement. Those who support this relatively new political concept say city governments are perfectly positioned to blunt what they see as a harmful rise of nationalism in the country. Rebecca Kemble is an advocate of Rebel Cities. She’s an alder in Madison,
a community she sees as having the potential to be a Rebel City, for its high level of community activism. “Small groups of organized people have really made big differences in policy, but they’re not comprehensive policy differences,” she says. “They’re not reorienting our government policy generally more toward, say, recommonizing what we can.” Rebel Cities supporters
believe a big part of changing a local government is developing new political candidates, who will run on platforms of changing institutional politics from the inside. According to Kemble, Madison has a long and well-deserved reputation as an activist community. But she says it’s a lot of smallgroup activism that hasn’t been well coordinated. “There are all these

“Madison is a majoritywhite city, with some of the most extreme racial disparities in quality of living, economic indicators and incarceration rates for AfricanAmericans,” she explains. Advocates of the Rebel Cities movement say city governments, rather than national political parties, are the best places to start putting government truly back into the hands of the people. www.desertstarweekly.com
3 Things Everyone Living with Arthritis Should Know
By Desert Star Staff Arthritis includes more than 100 rheumatic diseases and conditions that affect joints. If you are living with arthritis, here are a few things you should consider. 1. Arthritis can affect people of all ages. Many people think of arthritis as an affliction that only affects adults as they reach old age or athletes who have suffered an injury (known as osteoarthritis). Although the incidence of arthritis does increase with age, younger people can also be affected by the
disease. Autoimmune forms of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis, often strike people by the time they are middle-aged. Overall, it’s estimated that nearly onefourth of all adults in the United States (22.7 percent, 54.4 million) have doctor-diagnosed arthritis. Seven percent of 1844 year olds and 29 percent of 45-64 year olds report doctordiagnosed arthritis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 2. You can now track your condition better and get
support. Being diagnosed with a lifelong, chronic disease like arthritis can be overwhelming. Finding support, from friends, family, colleagues and online communities can help. For example, ArthritisPower, accessed online or downloaded as a free mobile app for android and iPhone, allows people with all forms of arthritis to track symptoms and treatments to see how they are doing over time. Users can send their results to doctors in advance of appointments to encourage more personalized and productive discussions.
By Desert Star Staff DENVER – The new budget passed by the U.S. House yesterday could add insult to injury for healthcare providers. Critics say the measure’s tax cuts - that primarily benefit the wealthy and large corporations - would require over $470 billion in cuts to Medicare and at least a trillion dollars in cuts to Medicaid, the lifeline of the nation’s safety-net health facilities. This comes as Congress also has allowed funding for critical health programs to expire. Polly Anderson, vice president of strategy and financing for the Colorado Community Health Network, says health centers in Colorado and across the country have “fallen off the cliff.” “We call it the primary-
care funding cliff because 70 percent of health-center federal funding, the CHIP program, and the National Health Services Corps all expired on September 30 due to Congress’ inability to act,” she explains. Anderson says Colorado’s funding reserves for CHIP could last through January, but she notes some states will likely to be unable to cover pregnant women and children in a matter of weeks. A measure co-sponsored by both Colorado senators to fund CHIP cleared a committee on Wednesday. A bill to fund community health centers in the House is co-sponsored by all but one member of the Colorado delegation. According to Anderson, the funding crisis isn’t only about the viability of health centers and
federal programs - it’s about the health of the communities the programs serve. “We’re talking about children, and individuals who often don’t make enough to purchase health insurance on their own,” she says. “So, it’s really Colorado’s working families and working individuals who will be most dramatically impacted if these programs aren’t reauthorized.” She notes about 75,000 children and at least 80 pregnant women in Colorado could be affected if Congress can’t pass legislation that includes funding for CHIP. More than 90 percent of patients who use community health centers for preventive care, vision and dental services and more are living at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level.
Note that ArthritisPower is a research registry. That means people must sign an informed consent to donate their data to researchers and learn more about other specific research studies announced in the app. The more people who participate in the registry, the more scientists can discover about arthritis. To learn more, visit arthritispower.org. 3. Surgery can help. In healthy joints, cartilage covers the ends of bones, allowing them to move smoothly and without pain. When arthritis (all forms) wears away or damages the protective cartilage, and other non-surgical treatments have proved unsuccessful, joint replacement (usually of the knee or the hip) is typically recommended, according to the American College of Rheumatology. When an orthopedic surgeon replaces a joint, it involves removing worn out cartilage from both sides of the joint, followed by resurfacing of the joint with a metal and plastic replacement implant that looks and functions much like a normal joint. Over the past two decades, the
safety and effectiveness of surgery, and the variety of hip and knee joint replacement devices has improved, thanks to research driven by surgeons and device makers. What’s missing, say experts, is a better understanding of patient experiences and preferences, particularly regarding what they value when making the decision to undergo surgery, pick a surgeon, and select a device. “The good news is that this research is underway by patient-led research communities, such as ArthritisPower,” says W. Benjamin Nowell, Ph.D., Director of PatientCentered Research at CreakyJoints, the online patient support community. If you need joint surgery, it’s important that your preferences are central to your decision making at every step of the way, from timing of surgery, surgeon, implant device and recovery plan. Make sure to ask questions, get second opinions, and seek support. Surgery and recovery can be hard, but talking about them shouldn’t be. StatePoint

Federal Dollars Help Clear Untested Rape Kits
By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK – New York City is getting some federal help to eliminate its backlog of untested rape kits. The Justice Department’s Sexual Assault Kit Initiative is distributing $34 million to 20 jurisdictions around the country. The grants will help test kits that have often sat in evidence lockers for years, prosecute those identified by DNA analysis, and keep victims informed. Ilse Knecht, policy and www.desertstarweekly.com
advocacy director at the Joyful Heart Foundation, which advocates for rapekit reform, says this is the third year the initiative has provided critical assistance for cities across the nation. “It’s much-needed support for communities as they do this work to get all the kits off the shelf and get them tested, to bring healing and justice to survivors, and to take really dangerous offenders off the streets,” she explains.
New York City is receiving more than $2 million to help process untested rape kits. A statewide audit identified almost two-thousand kits that have not been processed. Some states have backlogs of more than 10,000 untested rape kits. Knecht says any backlog represents a failure of the criminal justice system to prioritize sexual assaults. “This means not putting enough resources into testing rape kits, into personnel October 11, 2017
in sex crimes units and even prosecutors that are trained to take these cases to court,” she explains. In 1999, New York City alone had a backlog of almost 17,000 untested kits. By 2003, that backlog had been cleared, finding more than 2,000 matches in the national DNA database leading to 200 arrests. While the federal aid is important, Knecht points out that committing to the timely processing of rape
kits is ultimately an issue that the states must deal with. “That needs to be in law to make sure that that is something that survivors can count on that no matter where they live, no matter what their ZIP Code is, they’re going to get the same response statewide,” she adds. Under a New York state law passed last year, all rape kits collected in the state must be submitted to a lab within 10 days, with results due in 90 days.

Trump’s Rollback on LGBT Rights, Birth Control By Desert Star Staff ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A group in New Mexico that advocates for reproductive justice and health care says the state’s rural communities will suffer the most from the Trump administration’s decision Friday to limit birth control coverage under the Affordable Care Act. The employer contraceptive coverage mandate under ACA regulations provided access to birth control to more than 62 million women and saved women $1.4 billion in 2013. Denicia Cadena, policy director for the advocacy group Young Women United, says New Mexico is one of the states that has benefitted the most from the ACA, and the new directive is turning back the clock. “It just shows how much this administration has really committed themselves to attacking the most
marginalized people in our society,” she states. “We know that both of those groups – that people of color, low-income people – are likely to be most impacted.” The Trump administration also issued sweeping religious freedom directions that could override many antidiscrimination protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. The American Civil Liberties Union and the states of California and Massachusetts filed lawsuits immediately after the announcement Friday, arguing that the federal government cannot authorize discrimination. New Mexico recently became the fourth state in the nation where pharmacists can prescribe birth control, which helps those living in rural areas where there are doctor shortages. Cadena says the Trump
President Donald Trump’s efforts to dismantle initiatives enacted under the Obama administration now include limiting birth control for women and anti-discrimination protections for LGBT people. (internationalwomensinitiative.org) directive to allow companies not to cover birth control as part of their health plan is being promoted as religious liberty but is truly a health access issue. “Contraception allows
women and people to be able to make decisions about if and when they have a family, so we know this attack isn’t about good health care or about cost savings but is really an attack on women and
our families,” she stresses. Research shows 55 percent of pregnancies in New Mexico were unintended in 2010 compared with 45 percent nationally in 2011.
Lawsuit Could Mean Fewer Defendants Sit in Jail Awaiting Trial
By Desert Star Staff HOUSTON – A lawsuit making its way through the federal courts could radically change the way the legal system across the country handles bail for defendants awaiting trial. A group of inmates
filed suit against Harris County, where Houston is located, maintaining bail regulations that keep poor defendants in jail pending trial because they cannot pay are unconstitutional. The inmates won their case in the lower court, but
it is now working its way through the appeals process. Sandra Guerra Thompson, a law professor at the University of Houston Law Center, says a money-based bail system wrongly forces indigent defendants to remain locked up until their trial.
“People who cannot afford the bail, who are low risk, what ends up happening is that they’ll lose their jobs, they’ll lose their homes, their kids will be without care,” she states. “And so, their lives fall apart pretty quickly. So, the person who’s stuck in jail will feel tremendous pressure to just plead guilty.” The federal court ruling ordered Harris County officials to assess defendants on their risk to the community. In its decision, the court noted that 75 percent of all inmates in Texas jails have not been convicted of a crime. But the Harris County Attorney appealed the ruling, saying the order goes too far in forcing him to release defendants before trial. Thompson says if the decision is upheld, it could change the way courts operate across the country. She says courts in several states already have adopted a system of risk-based assessments of defendants.
By Desert Star Staff RALEIGH, N.C. – The human and financial cost of the death penalty is taking its toll on the punishment. Death sentences have declined by 90 percent in North Carolina since the 1990s, and data and feedback from district attorneys suggest capital punishment has had its day in the Tar Heel State. There’ve been five death sentences in the last five years,
compared with 140 in the same length of time in the 1990s. At the same time, the state’s murder rate has declined, indicating a correlation that may surprise some, explains Robert Dunham, executive director of the nonpartisan Death Penalty Information Center. “The murder rate drove death sentencing,” he says. “Death sentences had nothing to do with the

The public has become much more aware of systemic problems with the death penalty.” Dunham points to the number of exonerations in recent years of inmates on the state’s death row and conversion of sentences from death to life in prison without the possibility of parole as examples of the systematic problems. Nationwide opposition to the punishment is the highest its been since 1972. Top Tips for Staying Connected While In-Flight
By Desert Star Staff Over 2.2 million Americans fly every day, according to Airlines for America. Whether they are heading to a Disneythemed family adventure or jetting off for a romantic rendezvous, the most indispensable companion for many of these modern, mobile travelers is their smartphone. A recent survey by Gogo Inflight Internet found that 81 percent of travelers want to stay connected while inflight. Use the following travel tips to stay connected
while you’re up in the air. Check your airline before booking. Though you’ll now find inflight Wi-Fi on most airlines, not all flights may be equipped to offer it. Other tech amenities, like USB ports and in-seat power outlets, vary from airline to airline and even plane to plane — and can be limited to premium seating. If staying connected is important to you, take the extra step before booking to make sure Wi-Fi is available on your flight and confirm amenity options for your seat.
Try a travel-friendly phone plan. Some wireless providers are better for travelers than others. So, it’s worth doing a little homework to find your best option. For example, T-Mobile customers can use their phones to send text and picture messages, use apps like WhatsApp and iMessage, and check visual voicemail for free on all US flights equipped with Gogo Inflight Internet. They also get an hour of free internet access to surf the web and check email or social media though Gogo.
And, T-Mobile ONE Plus customers get unlimited Gogo Internet on domestic flights. Download your fun beforehand. If you like streaming video from services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, it’s a good idea to download movies and TV shows onto your device before boarding. The same is true for music. Be sure to save your favorite tunes and podcasts for offline listening, so you’ll have easy access to your favorite music, news and audio entertainment. Optimize your email. Finally, consider using web-based email (webmail) instead of ondevice apps. That way, you’re not waiting for messages to download while away or inflight. Alternatively, you can set your email app to download headers instead of the full message for quick and easy scan-ability and downloads. If you want to send mail with big attachments, like pics or video, be sure to compress your files. This will make for quicker, lighter uploads and keep email from getting stuck in your outbox. Happy connected travels! StatePoint
Are You Financially Prepared for an Emergency By Desert Star Staff Being financially prepared for an emergency or natural disaster is about more than just having savings set aside. Having access to critical personal and financial information will help you on the road to recovery. The experts at Freddie Mac offer the following tips for getting organized and prepared for the unexpected. • Compile information. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Emergency Financial First Aid Kit includes fillable checklists, and is a handy and free way to compile important information, such as driver’s license numbers, birth certificates and Social Security numbers, bank accounts, insurance policies, mortgage statements, credit cards, taxes, health insurance cards, accounts, medications taken and any other health records, as well as household contact information, including landlords, doctors, schools, employers, contractors, lawyers, and insurance agents. Be sure to revisit this information periodically and update it as needed. • Review your paperwork. Review your insurance policies and financial paperwork to be sure that they are current. Update any policies as soon as possible, so you are not without coverage when you need it most. After an emergency, contact your insurance agents about your policies to find out www.desertstarweekly.com

what you can expect, including an explanation of benefits. For example, many homeowners policies cover alternative living expenses that can help provide you and your family with temporary housing needs, meals and other life necessities. • Seek mortgage relief. In the event of an emergency, having access to your mortgage information can be critical, as you may be eligible for mortgage relief. “When FEMA announces that individual assistance programs have been extended in major disaster areas, we quickly respond by offering mortgage relief options for those in the impacted areas. This includes suspending mortgage payments for up to 12 months so victims of natural disasters can focus on
what’s important: their own safety and the safety of their families,” says Yvette Gilmore, Freddie Mac VP, SingleFamily Servicer Performance Management. “As soon as it’s safe to do so, it’s important that impacted homeowners contact their mortgage company right away to discuss their mortgage relief options.” • Get secured. Secure your property as best as possible, keeping it safe from damaging natural elements and, if you are evacuating, potential vandalism while it sits empty. Consider protecting valuables, mementos and personal information in a safety deposit box or a fire- and water-proof safe. When it’s safe to return home, document any damage to your home and belongings with photos or videos, if possible. October 11, 2017
• Get smart. Unfortunately, crises tend to bring out scam artists. Be wary of postdisaster scams and anyone offering to provide you with immediate assistance for money. Government officials will never ask for money and will always show their ID badges. For more disaster preparedness tips and resources, visit www. FreddieMac.com/blog. Saving for a rainy day is an important step that everyone should take to prepare for the unexpected. HOROSCOPES ARIES
The season has changed and so must our health regimes, our diets, the ways we exercise and how we plan our day. As Autumn begins it’s good to think along new lines, preparing for the coming changes in light, color, sun, shadows. All of these are reflected in our fall and winter festivals. The seasonal changes are reflected within ourselves, too. Relationships need extra tending so everyone doesn’t feel isolated, cold, alone, withdrawn and left out.
TAURUS It’s good to be out and about, learning new things, attending lectures, classes, gathering information. Or, perhaps creating and teaching a class yourself. Always in your life your task has been to illumine the minds of humanity, a serious and disciplined task. It would be good to consider what would be playful, bring enjoyment, fun and a calling forth your lightness and spontaneity? Perhaps you need to swim in a warm natural pool.
GEMINI What constitutes family to you, whether biological, friend, group (esoteric?), colleagues, etc.? Family matters more and more even if you tend to reject that thought. Something’s not complete with someone.
OCTOBER 11 – 17, 2017 ASTROLOGICAL FORECAST BY RISA D’ANGELES
What would that be? With whom? Listening to others until you understand the essential message is an important Gemini goal. All of this brings love forth – your spiritual task.
CANCER Make contact. These two words have a depth most don’t understand. Making contact releases Love. But it must be true, authentic and intentional contact. It must be from the heart, connecting heart to heart, Soul-to-Soul. The results are that Love being released creates liberation for everyone. You are the one to begin this process. Do this ceaselessly, quietly, with heartfelt intention of contact with all kingdoms.
LEO There’s a sense that you must create a new plan concerning finances and resources. When this is accomplished, a new state of values will come forth. You may want to communicate more deeply with those close to you, sharing with them your values, asking what values they hold. Seek to know the values held in common. The questions about values have to do with what your desires & aspirations are for the future. Do you know?

However, there comes a time when we each must define ourselves, become a sovereign individual, recognize our own self-identity, understand what we initiate, realize that we’re responsible, summon our confidence, and seek a new support system. Am I speaking to Virgo or Pisces? Both. For each is the shadow of the other.
LIBRA As I prepared the garden for autumn I gathered together a sheaf of wheat. The Virgo symbol of nourishment for humanity. I thought of Libra, and what nourishes them relationships, beauty, friends, equilibrium, balance, love, sacrifice, art. It’s the art of the wheat sheaf that caught my eye and I thought Librans must get back to their art in whatever form interests them. Some paint, some have galleries, some are collectors. What is your art form? It’s calling you.

PISCES We are to do our best in every place we find ourselves in. Many of us are indecisive these days, sitting on the fence (uncomfortable), unable to decide where we’re going, what to do when we don’t know what to do, how to provide our gifts when opportunities don’t seem to exist. 4 Things Vets and Service Members Need to Know When Buying a Home
By Desert Star Staff If you’re a veteran, reservist or active duty service member, it’s important to know that there are special benefits you may be eligible for when buying a home. “Veterans and service members have earned the opportunity to become homeowners, and it’s crucial that they are well-informed about the benefits and options available to them,”

Administration (VA) loan. A VA loan is a home loan guaranteed by the federal government, designed to help those who’ve served in the military obtain homeownership. They can sometimes be obtained with zero down payment. Gifts or grants can be used to help cover down payment and closing costs, subject to program requirements, and no mortgage insurance is required. • A large portion of qualified buyers aren’t taking advantage of the low-to-nodown-payment mortgage options available through VA loans. Indeed, more than 21 million veterans and service members live in the U.S., however, over the past five years, a mere 6 percent of them bought a home using a VA home loan, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. This may be due to the common myth that active duty service members, National Guard members and reservists are not eligible for VA loans (in fact, they may be eligible). Many also are unaware
that unmarried, surviving spouses of veterans who died as a result of service or service-related causes are also eligible. • Individual banks, not the Department of Veterans Affairs, offer VA loans, allowing you to work with a lender who understands your needs and makes you feel comfortable. “A specialized team member who understands unique military needs, such as a Wells Fargo Military Lending Specialist, can help you make the most of the home loan benefits you’ve earned,” says Murray. Developing a relationship with this lender is also a good idea, as you may later choose to refinance through the VA Interest Rate Reduction Refinance Loan (IRRRL) program. To learn more, visit wellsfargo.com/military. If homeownership seems daunting, remember that taking advantage of VA benefits can make it more financially and logistically viable. StatePoint

Robert Creighton Stars As James Cagney.--A Yankee Doodle Dandy
Robert Creighton and The Company of CAGNEY. Photo by Carol Rosegg When I was a kid my sisters and I actually saw James Cagney in “Yankee Doodle Dandy” 14 times in one week. We loved it that much. Eventually, Cagney was type casted as a gangster, but at heart he was a song and dance man—a Yankee Doodle Dandy. Now the New York sensation “Cagney,” has come to the El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood from Oct. 5 to 29 and stars Robert Creighton in the title role, along with the other five members of the New York cast. In New York, the show had a sold out five-week run, then moved on to the larger Westside Theatre where it ran for an additional 14 months for a total of 502 performances. In a recent interview with Robert Creighton, he told me how excited he was about bringing “Cagney” to California. “The two most important places I wanted this story of James Cagney to be told were New York City where he grew up and his character
was forged, and Hollywood where his talent and onscreen magnetism made him one of the greatest film legends of all time” he said. “It’s an honor to get to tell Mr. Cagney’s story, and i am thrilled that this dream-cometrue project is now having its day in the California sun.” Creighton told me he was born in Canada, then laughed adding, “I became a dual citizen, so I’m not lying when I sing “I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy.” He continued, “My fascination with Cagney began when one of my acting teachers said. ‘You remind me of James Cagney.’ After that I felt a weird connection to him since we both loved to sing and dance. I became obsessed about finding all of his films and watching them. One was ‘Man of 1,000 Faces’ where he played Lon Chaney. Soon I felt it was fate; I had to do a play about his life, and it cried out to be a musical.”
GOT NEWS?
Prior to starring in “Cagney,” Creighton did episodic TV work, including roles in the TV hit “Law and Order” He also played the upbeat mercat Timon in Disney’s “The Lion King.” His next Broadway show will be Disney’s “Frozen.” “I play the Duke of Weselton. He’s a bad guy, but he’s funny. My children (Robert James, 5 ½ and Samantha, 4) love the show.“ He also spoke warmly about his wife Whitney, who is in advertising, not show biz. According to Creighton “Our show blends music from Cagney musicals like “Give My Regards to Broadway,” “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and Yankee Doodle Dandy,” written by George M. Cohan with new music and lyrics which I wrote with Christopher McGovern. The book for the show is by Peter Colley. Bill Castellino directs, and the choreography is by Joshua Bergasse.” He continues; The conflict in the show is between Jack Warner, head of Warner Bros. played by Bruce Sabath and Cagney. Warner was a tough guy to work for. He would say ‘I’m the puppet master. I can

Cagney earned millions for the studio, but made very little money in return. Eventually, he walked out of his contract—and won. “Cagney was always a champion for liberal causes like the underpaid cotton pickers in the San Joaquin Valley. He was also a founding member of the Screen Actors Guild which fought for fairness under the studio system.” “Cagney was a family man. His wife, a performer in her own right, stuck by him through thick and thin for 66 years. Her name was Willard, but he called her Bill or Billie, but in the show, we call her Willie.” The actor and hoofer, loves playing Cagney, but says, “It is the most strenuous role I have ever played since I am on stage almost constantly for two

Haunted House and Halloween Industry Now a $10 Billion Industry
By Desert Star Staff Halloween is big business. The commerce of Halloween in the U.S. should exceed $10 billion during the 2017 season, according to Hauntworld. com, the industry’s leading website. That’s a lot of candy, costumes, decorations and tickets to haunted attractions. One of the largest growth areas in the Halloween trade is the explosion in number and quality of commercial haunted house attractions, haunted
farms, corn mazes, hayrides and other spooky venues. More than $1 billion of the $10 billion spending on Halloween is attributed to ticket purchases at themed haunted sites. “Visiting a haunted attraction is now the single most popular way to celebrate the holiday,” says Larry Kirchner, founder of Hauntworld.com, which directs consumers to find and review Halloween attractions around the globe. Cannabis Cultivation Facility in Cathedral City Set for Groundbreaking
KMIR News Staff Cathedral City, CA - A cannabis cultivation facility is expected to break ground in Cathedral City before the end of the year, city officials said Tuesday. The Sunniva Campus, a proposed 489,000-squarefeet medical cannabis cultivation and production facility, was unanimously approved for a Conditional Use Permit by the city’s Planning Commission. The Canadian-based Sunniva Inc. will break ground on Phase I of the facility this year, officials said, with construction expected to take place over the next three years near the intersection of Ramon Road and Date Palm Drive. Phase I of the facility will be a 325,000-squarefeet facility expected to produce 177,000 pounds of dry cannabis annually, with around 50 percent of production converted into oils and extracts. Phase II will add 164,000 square feet to the facility, adding 100,000 more pounds of cannabis produced each year. “Sunniva Campus represents a substantial step www.desertstarweekly.com

Haunted attractions strive to make guests feel like they’re experiencing a real-life horror movie, some going so far as to use computer animation, giant monsters and even virtual reality to provide scares guests enjoy. Many haunts now feature new attractions, such as zombie paintball, zombie laser tag, corn mazes, haunted

So, what is the best way for your family to experience the Halloween haunt craze? Those with teenagers should seek out the scariest haunted house near them. Families with younger children should head to local farms. Professional Halloween attractions are now often based at family farms, which typically offer traditional pumpkin patches, corn mazes and hayrides to appeal to younger guests. By Desert Star Staff DETROIT – Any blow to the head - whether on the football field, the playground, or even the kitchen floor - can cause a concussion, which is why doctors say everyone needs to take precautions and know the warning signs. As the head primary-care team physician for the Detroit Lions, family physician Dr. Michael Workings sees more than his fair share of head trauma. With fall sports now in full swing, he says after any head injury - no matter how minor - the athlete should immediately be removed from play, and parents and coaches need to watch very carefully for the symptoms of a concussion. “Things like headaches, or change in your ability to keep your balance, or change in your sensation, or change in your mood,” he said. “You should be looking for just an alteration in personality.” Because of the risk of cognitive and personality changes, Dr. Workings says
it’s crucial to get a medical evaluation if there’s any reason to suspect a concussion, which is not visible to the naked eye. Treatment for concussions begins with avoiding physical and mental exertion. A recent study from the University of Michigan found that one in five teens, including nonathletes, have experienced at least one concussion. While much of the recent discussion about the longterm effects of concussions has centered around football, Workings says all sports have the potential for head injuries. He says that doesn’t have to mean giving up sports, but rather ensuring parents, kids and coaches are on the same page. “Making sure that the athlete and the parent understand the risk, that the athlete is utilizing protective gear, that the parent is engaging in sports that are well-supervised and that, if there is a concussion, that it is taken seriously,” he explains.
Athletes who play contact sports and their parents need to understand the risks of concussions. (greyerbaby/morguefile) One of the most dangerous things, he adds, is to stay in the game or return to practice while suffering from a concussion. “If you continue to play, there’s a phenomenon called second impact - someone that’s concussed, that takes
another impact, that could deepen those concussion symptoms both in severity and in duration,” he warns. He notes that it’s a common misconception that a person needs to be knocked unconscious in order to suffer

Wind has been a major factor in fanning the flames, with gusts of 46-79 miles per hour causing the fires to spread. Smoke from the conflagrations could be sensed as far as San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose. A smoke advisory has been issued for San Francisco, telling residents to “close windows and limit outdoor activities. Keep pets inside for protection.” What caused the fires is still under investigation. Similar wildfires rages across the area in August 2015, when 12,000 residents were evacuated and 60,000 acres went up in flames, after drought conditions and winds left firefighters struggling to contain the outbreaks. As fires ravage Northern California’s Napa Valley, a rapidly moving brushfire has scorched several structures and prompted the evacuation of 1,000 homes in Southern California’s Anaheim Hills. The blaze has been dubbed Canyon Fire number 2.

Need New Glasses? Don’t Overlook These Ways to Enhance Your Lenses By Desert Star Staff When it comes to buying new eyeglasses, many people focus on frames, spending hours trying on multiple shapes and colors. With so many styles to choose from, it’s easy to forget that glasses are used for a medical purpose and they need to do more than just look good -- they need to work. Remember, there are many lenses and enhancements that can be customized to fit your lifestyle and everyday needs. Here are some lens enhancements you’ll want to consider “must-haves” for your next pair of glasses. • Anti-reflective (AR) coating: A good AR or anti-reflective coating can enhance your vision and make your glasses look better by minimizing those annoying reflections. The coatings can be applied to the front and back of your lenses to help protect them from scratches and smudges, and repel dust and water. Additionally, AR
coatings can reduce eyestrain caused by glare and reflections, and prevent the “halos” you might see from oncoming cars at night. The coating also reduces the reflection of light, allowing others to better see your eyes through the lenses. • Light-reactive lenses: Also known as photochromic lenses, these lenses quickly darken in sunlight and return to clear indoors, combining the benefits of regular prescription glasses and sunglasses in one convenient package. Light-reactive lenses also reduce light sensitivity, protect against ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and many even reduce exposure to blue light from sunlight and devices. • Blue light reduction: Blue light is a high-energy light emitted by digital devices, LED lights, and the sun. Blue light exposure has been linked to digital eye strain. And with screen time continuing to soar, it’s not surprising that digital
eye strain has surpassed carpal tunnel syndrome as the leading computer-related workplace complaint in America, according to the Vision Council’s digital ye strain report. Adding a blue light coating to your lenses can reduce your exposure and offer relief from sore, irritated, tired eyes while working, cramming, e-reading, or binge-watching. • Progressive lenses: Lens enhancements aren’t the only way to upgrade your vision experience. For those who have
graduated to the sometimesdreaded presbyopia club, the age-related loss of the eye’s ability to focus on nearby objects, there is new technology that makes adapting to progressive lenses much easier. Additionally, gone are the days of the bifocal, so you won’t have to endure the line in the middle of the lens. Instead, you can enjoy a cosmetically- pleasing lens that allows you to see near, far, and in between effortlessly. To learn more about
finding the right lens enhancements, visit vsp.com/ eyeglasses-lenses.html. For better vision and protection against eye strain and damage, don’t overlook your lens options. When it’s time to get your next pair of glasses, think beyond fashion and take some time to think through your lenses, considering options that can offer you better vision as well as protection against eye strain and damage. StatePoint the Indio Fashion Mall. “If a big chain store would take a chance to come in here and open up a business, they wouldn’t regret it. Trust me I know, I’ve been here for 17 years. I know they wouldn’t regret it,” said Cardona. The city of Indio wants investors to expand the mall onto a 20-acre parcel of land it owns just to the south of the property. But the city won’t pay for the mall’s current asking price and investors are weary of buying a mall where only about 50 percent of the stores have tenants. Source KMIR

Indio Mall Struggles to Keep Tenants By KMIR News Indio, CA - If you haven’t been to the Indio Fashion Mall in a while, you’re not the only one. The struggling commercial center has seen a decline in customers for more than a decade. When you walk around the Indio Fashion Mall, you start to notice something eerie. Store, after store, after store...closed. “It’s small, hardly any people here. Hardly any stores,” said mall patron Ivana Alvarez.
The decline of the Indio Fashion Mall began in 2008 when the economy tanked. When anchor department stores like Sears and Gottshalks left, the mall began to see fewer and fewer costumers. “The traffic, the people, they don’t come anymore because they think that the mall is closed or they think that no one is here, there’s no more businesses,” said Hector Cardona, owner of Hector’s
Cell Phones and Accessories. Store owners say the only people who shop there now are those looking for a specific service or product. They are in, and they are out. But it didn’t always used to be that way. In fact, people used go to the Indio Fashion Mall just to hang out. “That’s the big difference too. Before they would come, they would have raffles and music, and all kinds of stuff. People would come
hang out and have their ice cream and lemonade after church,” said Cardona. A developer bought the mall in 2003 for $16 million dollars with plans to turn in into something like The River in Rancho Mirage. But after the big department stores left, so did any interest in redevelopment. The current owners bought the mall in 2010 for about $8.5 million dollars. The owners are currently being sued by investors who say their money was never used for any renovations. Meanwhile, store owners have their own ideas about what would save
By Desert Star Staff Parents seeking positive, meaningful extracurricular activities for their children may struggle to identify the right programs for their kids, especially if busy family schedules limit options. While many youth programs help children socialize and learn
new skills, some go further to help shape who kids may become as adults. When choosing activities for young children, consider the following: • Diverse experiences: Keep things interesting and engaging for your child. Select programs that offer a range
of activities and adventures. • Talented volunteers or staff: Ask, “What type of training do volunteers and staff members receive?” The answer to this is key as you help ensure your child will be mentored by positive role models. • Program values: Learn what the organization’s goals are, how it teaches children about building character and good citizenship, and how it helps youth explore their goals. • Scheduling: Extracurricular activities can be time consuming. Find out what meetings and activities are required to ensure the program works for your family. • Starting now: Today’s parents are more likely to engage their children in activities at a younger age, according to a survey by Forrester. Consider enrolling your children in extracurricular activities early, perhaps even before formal education begins. This can help foster their long-term development. Still not sure what activities
are right for your children? One choice with compelling outcomes is Scouting. Kids who participate in Scouting exhibit strong moral values and positive character attributes, allowing them to embrace new opportunities, overcome obstacles and become better prepared for future success, suggests a study of kids age 6 to 12 conducted by Tufts University. For this reason, parents looking to create a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community in their children may consider Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. While many people associate these programs with camping and outdoor adventures, the Boy Scouts of America also offers programs for youth with other unique interests. Here are some highlights: • Lion: This pilot program for 5 and 6-year-old or kindergarten-age boys and their parents, combines concepts of character development, leadership skills, personal

INP 1700652 To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the WILL or estate, or both of DAVID NELSON BOLLES, SR. . A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by DANA G. BOLLES and DAVID N. BOLLES, JR. in the Superior Court of California, County of RIVERSIDE. THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that DANA G. Let’s check: Mensa offers IQ test for Trump and Tillerson By Desert Star Staff The high-IQ society Mensa said it would be willing to host President Donald Trump and secretary of state Rex Tillerson in an IQ test, following the widespread outrage over a joke Trump made in a recent interview. “American Mensa would be happy to hold a testing session for President Trump and Secretary Tillerson,” Charles Brown, the group’s communications director, told The Hill. Mensa is a non profit organization open to people who score at the 98th percentile or higher on a standard, supervised intelligence test. “It’s important to note that our admissions test is not the sole way to qualify for Mensa ‒ there are hundreds of other
prior-evidence tests that can qualify a member,” Brown said. “And the early success of many presidents no doubt exposed them to those types of qualifying avenues.” Brown cited former President Clinton’s experience as a Rhodes Scholar, Jimmy Carter’s work as a nuclear engineer, and George H.W. Bush’s time as a military pilot. “Each could have encountered standardized academic tests (LSAT, GMAT, Miller Analogies), where qualifying scores would have propelled them into Mensa,” he told the Hill. In an interview with Forbes published Tuesday, Trup quipped he could go headto-head in an IQ showdown with Tillerson, commenting on last week’s NBC News story ‒ denounced as false
by both the State Department and the White House ‒ about Tillerson calling him a “moron” in a meeting with other government officials. “I think it’s fake news,” Trump told the magazine, “but if he did [say] that, I guess we’ll have to compare IQ tests. And I can tell who is going to win.” During a press briefing on Tuesday, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Trump had “made a joke” when referring to the IQ challenge. The president “has full confidence in the secretary of state,” she said, adding that the White House press corps should “get a sense of humor.” Last week, NBC reported that Tillerson had disparaged Trump following a July 20 meeting at the Pentagon
with members of Trump’s national security team and Cabinet officials, citing three unnamed officials familiar with the incident. It was alleged that Vice President Mike Pence had to convince Tillerson to stay on the job.
The report was “categorically false,” said Pence’s spokesman. “I have never considered leaving this post,” Tillerson said on October 4, dismissing the NBC report as “erroneous” and “petty nonsense.”
Harvey Weinstein sex scandals ‘covered up’
By Desert Star Staff Before uncovering allegations of Hollywood bigwig Harvey Weinstein’s sexual misconduct, the New York Times buried a similar story over a decade ago, after he made a visit to the paper and A-list celebrities contacted the reporter. Weinstein, a Hollywood film producer and film studio executive, was fired from the company he co-founded on Sunday, after a New York Times investigation uncovered three decades of sexual harassment allegations last week. As one of the most powerful voices in the entertainment industry, Weinstein has collected six best-picture Oscars for producing critically acclaimed films such as “Sex, Lies, and Videotape,” “Pulp Fiction” and “Good Will Hunting.” On Sunday, reporter Sharon Waxman wrote a piece for The Wrap that said that the New York Times had quashed her investigation into Weinstein’s sexual misconduct back in 2004. In her original report, Waxman tracked down Fabrizio Lombardo, the head of Miramax Italy. She traveled to Italy and discovered that Lombardo knew nothing about filmmaking. He was reportedly being paid $400,000 in less than a year to “take care of Weinstein’s women needs.” At the time, Disney, the thenparent company of Miramax, told Waxman that they had no idea Lombardo existed. Waxman also tracked down a woman in London who was paid off after an unwanted sexual encounter with Weinstein. The report said that she was “terrified” to speak about the incident, because she had a nondisclosure agreement. However, according to Waxman, her story was spiked after “intense pressure from Weinstein,” which involved Weinstein personally visiting the New York Times newsroom and making his displeasure known. Waxman also said that she received calls from A-list actors Matt Damon

and Russell Crowe, who vouched for Lombardo. In the end, the Times printed a story about Miramax firing Lombardo without any reference to sexual misconduct. Then-culture editor for the Times, Jon Landman, who is now an editor-at-large for Bloomberg, reportedly told Waxman that the story was unimportant because Weinstein was “not a publicly elected official.” When Waxman was asked why she did not write anything on Weinstein in the past 13 years, she said that he has “done good things.” “It’s easy to paint everyone in black and white in the 140-word Twitterverse,” Waxman said. On Monday, Clifford Levy, deputy managing editor at the New York Times, issued a response to Waxman’s article, saying that it is “unimaginable” that the story was killed because of pressure from Weinstein. He said that the two top editors have no recollection of being pressured over the story and Waxman’s direct editor said that she didn’t have the story “nailed.” “The story we published last week took months of work by two experienced investigative reporters,” Levy said. “I’m sure Ms. Waxman believes she had a story. But if you read her own description, she did not have anything near what was revealed in our story. Mainly, she had an off-the-record account from one woman.” On Thursday, the New York Times reported that Weinstein had reached at least eight settlements with women after being confronted with allegations including sexual harassment and unwanted physical contact. Among the allegations, the report described how Weinstein asked actress Ashley Judd to come to his Beverly Hills hotel room for what she assumed was a meeting, and asked her to watch him shower. On another occasion, the report states that Weinstein badgered a female assistant
into giving him a massage while he was naked. “I am a 28-year-old woman trying to make a living and a career. Harvey Weinstein is a 64-year-old, world famous man and this is his company. The balance of power is me: 0, Harvey Weinstein: 10,” Lauren O’Connor, a colleague, said, according to the Times. The Huffington Post later reported that Weinstein took Lauren Sivan, a thennews anchor for News 12 Long Island, on a tour of Socialista, a Cuban-themed club and restaurant of which Weinstein was an investor, and tried to kiss her. When she rejected his advances, Weinstein reportedly told her to “just stand there and shut up.” Then, he allegedly blocked her exit and masturbated into a potted plant in front of her. The report states that Sivan stayed quiet for so many years, because she was “fearful of the power that Weinstein wielded in the media.” After the Times reported on the sexual harassment allegations on Thursday, Weinstein apologized for causing “a lot of pain,” and took an immediate leave of absence from the company. “I appreciate the way I’ve behaved with colleagues in the past has caused a lot of pain, and I sincerely apologize for it. Though I’m trying to do better, I know I have a long way to go,” Weinstein said in a statement. Weinstein blamed his alleged behavior on his coming of age in a different era. “I came of age in the 60’s and 70’s, when all the rules about behavior and workplaces were different. That was the culture then,” Weinstein said. “I have since learned it’s not an excuse, in the office - or out of it. To anyone.” As the scandal grew, the board of directors of the Weinstein Company terminated Weinstein, citing “new information about misconduct by Harvey Weinstein that has emerged in the past few days.” One-third of the company’s board also resigned, according to the Times. October 11, 2017
In the hours before being fired on Monday, Weinstein reportedly sent a letter to Hollywood CEOs and other friends, begging them to write letters to the board of directors to convince them not to fire Weinstein. “My board is thinking of firing me,” a copy of the letter obtained by Janice Min, part owner of The Hollywood Reporter, said. “All I’m asking, is let me take a leave of absence and get into heavy therapy and counseling. Whether it be in a facility or somewhere else, allow me to resurrect myself with a second chance. A lot of the allegations are false as you know but given therapy and counseling as other people have done, I think I’d be able to get there.” Min later tweeted that Ron Meyer, David Zaslav and Jeffrey Katzenberg all refused to support Weinstein, with one board member telling her there was “no f-ing chance.” In the aftermath, Hollywood actors, who had previously praised Weinstein, condemned him for the allegations that they claimed they knew nothing about. On Monday, Academy award winning actress Meryl Streep, who collaborated with Weinstein on films like “August: Osage County” and “The Iron Lady,” said she was “appalled” by the “disgraceful” news. “The behavior is inexcusable, but the abuse of power familiar. Each brave voice that is raised, heard and credited by our watchdog media will ultimately change the game,” Streep told the Huffington Post Judi Dench, another Academy Award winner who has collaborated with Weinstein, told Newsweek that she was “completely unaware” of the “horrifying” claims. While accepting a British Film Institute Award in 2011, Dench thanked Weinstein for casting her in the Oscarwinning film “Shakespeare in Love” and said she had the producer’s name “tattooed on my bum ever since.” “I offer my sympathy to those who have suffered, and wholehearted support to those who have spoken out,” Dench added. Other celebrities have also come out against Weinstein, celebrating the women who have come forward as heroic. Weinstein has often been seen as a champion of liberal causes. He has donated nearly $600,000 to the Democrats and hosted a fundraiser for former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in his Manhattan home last year. He has also employed Malia Obama, the oldest daughter of former President Barack Obama, as an intern. He appeared on the White House visitor logs 13 times during Obama’s time in office.

Dickens Classic Novel “A Tale Of Two Cities” By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Nineteenth century English novelist Charles Dickens, is one of the English-speaking world’s greatest writers. His many novels validate his talent for creating memorable characters along with a gift for rich plotlines and the ability to keep the reader fully engaged from beginning to end. “A Tale of Two Cities”, published in 1859, was one of the finest novels of its day and now, 200 years later it appears on the stage of Pasadena’s classic theatre company, A Noise Within, as a bold, new, dramatic production from the pen of journeyman writer and play adaptor Mike Poulton. In 2016, Poulton debuted his version of Dickens’ classic story of love and redemption set against the tumultuous backdrop and events leading up to the French Revolution and the infamous ‘Reign of Terror’ at the Royale and Derngate theatre complex in Northampton, England. The success of the Northampton production must have caught the eyes and ears of Founding Producing Artistic Directors Julia RodriguezElliott and Geoff Elliott. The Elliott’s (husband and wife) have successfully navigated the challenging and daunting waters of presenting quality theatre in the traditional ‘rotating repertory format’ thanks to a dedicated and committed resident artists program that has become the backbone of the organization over the last twenty-six years. “A Tale of Two Cities”, crisply directed by the Elliotts’, is one of Dickens’ sweeping stories that is not staged very often. The core story is often mistakenly confused by audiences, as the musical “Les Miserables”, due to the similar rebellion sequences. ‘Two Cities’ deals with the 1789 French Revolution in Paris, while ‘Les Miz’ takes place in the south of France in the city of Digne, in 1815 and is known as the ‘Student Rebellion’. Boiling Dickens’ large source material novel (some 350 pages) down to a two hour stage production became a herculean process for writer Mike Poulton. It is a richly plotted tale of love and redemption whose actions cross back and forth between London and the French Capitol of Paris. There have been plays and movies based on the French Revolution over the years, some (25 years back) six film versions and six TV versions, among a few theatrical productions have mounted productions. For example, Frank Wildhorn’s stage musical production “The Scarlet Pimpernell”, was seen by LA audiences some seventeen years ago. But it’s hard to beat the 1935 www.desertstarweekly.com
MGM movie starring Ronald Colman as Sydney Carton when it comes to capturing a sweeping, large canvas story like “A Tale of Two Cities”. In short, “A Tale of Two Cities”, tells the story of French doctor Manette (Nicholas Hormann) and his daughter Lucie (Emily Goss), and Emily’s French-born husband Charles Darnay (Tavis Doucette), a former French Aristocrat who renounced his title and moved to England and is married to Lucie. Darnay’s friend and lawyer Sydney Carton (Frederick Stuart), as it happens, harbor’s a secret unrequited love for Lucie, and is determined to help her and his friend Darnay in any way he can. In France the revolution and its supporters cast a wide net in an effort to punish the hated aristocrats. When Darnay receives word in London that a friend is in trouble with the rebels and their revolutionary court and trials, he returns to Paris to help and is arrested and put on trial as a traitor. The main accuser against him Madame Defarge (Abby Craden) is determined that Darnay must die, because his family killed members of her family. She wants an eye for an eye. These are the main characters that propel the narrative forward. It may appear as a somewhat dated dramatic piece, but the core values of two hundred years ago can still resonate with 21st century audiences, especially when it comes to understanding today’s toxic politics. There are twenty-three performers, some of whom play multiple roles in this fine ensemble production. Unfortunately, there is not enough space to list everyone. However, there are always standouts. Emily Goss renders a small but integral role with passion and empathy as Lucie. Goss goes from a wonderful, enchanting, Muriel in ANW’s recent production “Ah Wilderness! to a frightened, sympathetic Lucie in ‘Two Cities’. Abby Creden as the villainous Madame Defarge, spits out her bilious feelings and talk of revenge in whiplashing dialogue. She controls whose head is to leave their shoulders, and who is to be spared. That’s too much power to be left to a single avenging person. Tavis Doucette as Darnay plays to the stoic and steadfast traits that make him a sympathetic character and a loyal friend of Sydney Carton. Frederick Stuart, as Carton is the real hero of this tale of two cities, giving his last full measure of devotion to Lucie and Darnay. Stuart delivers a finely judged performance as Sydney Carton. Solid support comes from
Ensemble. Photo by Craig Schwartz. Nicholas Hormann, Trisha Miller, Jeremy Rabb, and Geoff Elliott. The production is well paced and neatly choreographed for such as large company. But I am puzzled by the directors’ decisions to have the French characters speak with English cockney accents. It’s natural for the cockney-accented roles for English speaking characters, but it’s a bit confusing to have people from two different countries
sound alike when delivering dialogue, n’est-ce pas? In the technical department the creative team led by the Elliotts have a functional set and performing area designed by Fred Kinney, with lighting design by Ken Booth, and original Music Composition/Sound Design by Robert Oriol. The costumes Designed by Jenny Foldenauer are spot-on and appropriate for the period for both the
aristocrats and the rebelling mobs and peasants. “A Tale of Two Cities” is a splendid production that runs in repertory through November 19th. The other two productions also running in repertory are: “The Mad Woman of Chaillot” through November 11th, and G.B. Shaw’s “Mrs. Warrens Profession”, through November 18th. Don’t Miss any of the three!
