Family Shares Its love Leslie and Bill Seals partnered with Southwest Community Church to offer assistance through Safe Families for Children. (Photo courtesy of Leslie and Bill Seals)
Working with Safe Families for Children, Coachella Couple Reaches Out to Mom in Crisis By Larry Jameson COACHELLA – Theresa (not her real name) was a jobless, homeless, drug-addicted mother with a two-year-old son and sixmonth-old daughter when Safe Families for Children stepped in to help her be a stronger, healthier parent. With the help of Leslie and Bill Seals, a Coachella-based
host family who provide a safe, temporary place for her two children, Theresa received the support necessary to begin changing her life without the threat of losing custody of her kids. Theresa was confused as to why her host family would help a stranger to such a degree. What began as one
family taking care of another mother’s children evolved into a relationship between the two families — giving them an ability to share powerful moments of mentorship. A few months into this new relationship, visiting the Seals and her children for dinner when she could, Theresa checked herself into a treatment program.

During this time, she stayed by her own choice, passed the GED and obtained her high school diploma — rising above her addictions to become a woman with goals and aspirations that will benefit her children. Today, she has graduated a one-year sobriety program and was able to change her circumstances with the help of the Seals through

One of the largest open studio tours in the nation, Hwy 62 Art Tours is a self-guided tour of galleries, shops, homes and private studios showcasing hundreds of artists in the communities of Joshua Tree National Park. Art lovers can browse and buy original artwork in all mediums directly from the artists, peek inside their working environments and creative spaces and enjoy the scenic byways, breathtaking views, blue skies, clean air and bright stars of the high desert that help inspire our artists (some of whom are famous). Visitors will find things here they won’t find anywhere else — assemblage art made with reclaimed trash from the desert, giant kinetic sculptures, abstract and landscape paintings, and dusty, secret treasures tucked into all kinds of unexpected places. Each year brings an astonishing array of work, from pottery and furniture to wearable designs, photography and fine art. A celebration of all the arts, Hwy 62 Art Tours also spotlights the talents of the high desert’s finest musical and performing artists. The days and evenings are filled with live music, theatre, poetry, performances and special arts events throughout both weekends — giving art lovers the opportunity to experience the full spectrum of
arts in the Morongo Basin. Now in its 12th year, Hwy 62 Art Tours has grown to be a destination event. Based on artist surveys and guest sign-in sheets, Hwy 62 Art Tours brings an estimated 8,000 visitors annually, coming from all areas of California, and as far away as Chicago and New York. Operation Safe House Assists Troubled Youth Program to Benefit from Donation Drive Nov. 1-6
By Investigator Lance Colmer PALM DESERT – Law enforcement is often faced with situations involving runaway or homeless youths, or intervening in a family dispute concerning an angry or incorrigible teen. Often these calls do not include any criminal wrong-doing, but rather an emotional crisis between family members. Many teens, feeling as though they have nowhere to turn, respond by threatening to run away. Police agencies throughout Riverside County have relied on Operation Safe House as a dependable and positive alternative when encountering troubled or runaway youth. Runaway youth are often at greater risk of becoming pregnant or contracting sexually transmitted diseases. Runaways can soon find themselves in a situation beyond their control and many become victims of crime. Still others get involved with criminal activities like shoplifting, robbery, prostitution, pornography or drug sales in order to support themselves on the streets. Operation Safe House is a
private, non-profit emergency shelter program providing immediate help to youth and families experiencing crisis situations. It offers core essential services to runaways or homeless teens and young adults, providing emergency crisis intervention and support for approximately 800 youths annually. Services include a structured 14-day program

This is a time of creative thinking, revelations, assessing and contemplating your life’s endeavors. Things change again in three weeks. Most importantly, have fun with Mercury’s retrograde.

You thought they were over. But, here they are again. Maintain a professional image, demeanor, attitude and position. Step carefully, seeking a new path ahead. In addition to cash, the Trustee will accept cashier’s checks drawn on a state or national bank, a check drawn by a state or federal credit union, or a check drawn by a state or federal savings and loan association, savings association, or savings bank specified in Section 5102 of the Financial Code and authorized to do business in this state. Said sale will be made, in an ‘’AS IS’’ condition, but without covenant or warranty, express or implied, regarding title, possession or encumbrances, to satisfy the indebtedness secured by said Deed of Trust, advances thereunder, with interest as provided, and the unpaid principal of the Note secured by said Deed of Trust with interest thereon as provided in said Note, plus fees, charges and expenses of the Trustee and of the trusts created by said Deed of Trust. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 1-800-281-8219 or visit this Internet Web site www.recontrustco.com, using the file number assigned to this case 13-0009144. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. Chiefs Slay Dragons, Take First Place
By Dan Marinelli PALM DESERT – The Desert Chiefs managed to crawl away with a victory last Saturday night in their closest, most competitive game in four weeks. The San Fernando Valleybased California Dragons came into Palm Desert High School with one goal in mind: upsetting the second-place, 7-0 Desert Chiefs. The Dragons showed up to play a smart, competitive game. They were determined to deny Komani Harper, who had returned kicks for touchdowns in each of his three previous games, an opportunity to touch the ball. The Dragons knew how dangerous Harper could be and
intentionally aimed their kicks at alternate returners Nick Lee, Alfredo Melendez and Thaniel Lee the entire night. Had Harper been given an opportunity to return anything, the Chiefs would have likely put more points on the board. Due to the absence of starting quarterback Brent Rausch, the Chiefs got off to a slow start offensively. In Rausch’s absence, starting wide receiver and backup quarterback Gaston Bailey would get his first-ever start at quarterback for the Chiefs. Bailey is no slouch; he had seen time at the quarterback position in the previous two games and had three touchdowns. In this game, however, Bailey
looked somewhat rattled from the beginning. The Chiefs’ first drive of the game was capped with a snap over Bailey’s head, resulting in a safety. The Dragons started the game with and early, and rare, 2-0 lead. Midway through the second quarter, the Chiefs moved Bailey back to his, more familiar, receiving role and put Sammy Chavez in at quarterback. “Gaston stepped up and started the game,” said Desert Chiefs Head Coach Josiah Jackson. “We had our second string quarterback, Sammy Chavez, who came back from an early-season injury, warm, and ready to play. We thought
it would be better to put Gaston back in a position that calls for his athleticism and give Sammy a shot.” Coach Jackson’s call to insert Chavez was spot-on. Chavez’ first pass of the game was a 19-yard touchdown pass to Gaston Bailey, putting the Chiefs ahead by five but only for a short time. The Dragons, unlike most Chiefs’ opponents, would not fold. With almost five minutes gone by in the second half, the Dragons marched 92 yards in two and a half minutes and scored a touchdown on a oneyard running play. The Dragons would take their second lead of the game, 8-7. The Dragons’ ability to quickly answer the Chiefs left the latter team’s players scratching their heads. No team they’ve faced all year has played them so tightly. The Dragons took Harper’s return game out of the picture but they did not take his running game away from the backfield. The next Chiefs drive started with a 60-yard Thaniel Lee kickoff return. Harper did the rest of the work, taking the ball 40 yards in three carries, for the touchdown. The Chiefs reclaimed the lead, 14-8, and would never look back. The Chiefs would score two more times in the game. The first was on a 15-yard pass to Ricky Festa at the end of the third quarter. The second was on a 33-yard pass to Nick Lee
to start the fourth quarter. On those touchdowns, the Chiefs missed one of their two extra points leaving them ahead of the Dragons, 27-8. The Dragons did their best to give the Desert Chiefs a run for their money. One play after Nick Lee caught his touchdown pass, the Dragons ran a kickoff back for a touchdown. Because of a missed extra point, the Dragons trailed by 13 points, 27-14. After forcing a quick three and out, the Dragons regained possession and scored an unanswered touchdown with five minutes left in the game. A failed two-point conversion attempt caused the Chiefs’ lead to shrink to just seven. With possession, and just a short amount of time remaining, the Chiefs should have easily been able to run out the last few minutes on the clock. However, the Dragons forced the Chiefs to punt, giving the Dragons one more shot to tie the game with 1:45 left to play. The Chiefs would force three straight Dragon incomplete passes and win the game by a one-touchdown margin, 27-20. The Desert Chiefs improved to 8-0 on the season and moved into first place. This Friday, the Chiefs go on the road to face the only other undefeated team in the conference, the second place SoCal Apaches. The game will be at Santa Fe Springs and starts at 7:30 p.m.

sports By Dan Marinelli PALM DESERT – The lights were bright at Palm Desert High School last Friday, but the brightest light was senior Aztec running back Trae Riek. In front of at least 1,200 attendees, the Palm Desert High Aztecs (1-0 in Desert Valley League, 2-4 overall) squared off against the Cathedral City High Lions (0-1 in Desert Valley League, 5-1 Overall) in the first game of the Desert Valley League (DVL) season. In a matchup between two upper-tier DVL teams, whoever wins will set themselves up nicely for one of the three automatic playoff berths allotted to the DVL. The task would not be easy, though, as the Lions would have to play this game with a noticeable disadvantage. In this game, Trae Riek should have been opposite the Lions’ star-running back, Orlando Wallace, but due to an ejection against Twentynine Palms the week before, the Lions were forced to play without him. However, the Aztecs did have Riek — and they exploited him. With Riek in the backfield for
the Aztecs, the game was almost decided before the second quarter even started. On 11 carries, Riek ran for 193-yards and made two touchdowns, lifting the Aztecs to an early 21-7 lead. “He’s just a good running back,” said Aztecs Head Coach Patrick Blackburn. “He’s got good vision, good speed, but you’ve got to give a lot of credit to the offensive line. They created holes for him all night. He also got a lot of yards after contact.” On the Aztecs’ opening drive of the second quarter, Riek picked up where he left off. Riek carried the ball 36 yards for a touchdown, tacking onto his ridiculous stat line and extending the Aztec lead by another seven points. Despite the absence of Wallace, the Lions did have some offensive star power of their own. Thanks to an exceptional firsthalf performance by senior wide receiver James Rodriguez, the Lions were able to close the gap by halftime. Rodriguez caught two touchdown passes and a returned a 93-yard kickoff for a touchdown to bring the Lions to within seven at halftime. The Aztecs were up 35-28 and kept at least a seven- point lead the rest of the game. In the second half, the Lions’
