Borrego Solar Project to Power a Brighter Future in Desert Hot Springs DESERT HOT SPRINGS – A host of local and regional dignitaries — led by Riverside County Supervisor John Benoit and Desert Hot Springs Mayor Yvonne Parks — converged at the corner of Dillon and Little Morongo roads last Friday, Oct. 11, for the ceremonial installation of the “Golden Bolt” at the Borrego Solar Project, also known at the Desert Hot Springs

Solar Project. The 14-acre clean energygenerating installation, which will have 9,800 solar panels delivering power to the grid when completed at the end of this year, was designed and engineered by San Diego-based Borrego Solar Systems, Inc. — one of the oldest solar developers in the U.S. Borrego Solar is constructing the project with an assist from

Reno Construction; about 50 local workers have been hired to build the plant. The project is expected to become the nexus of a planned industrial complex in this part of the city. And it will tap a resource Desert Hot Springs has in great abundance: sunshine. “The Dillon Industrial Corridor has celebrated a vital piece of economic development in the

City of Desert Hot Springs with the Borrego Solar Project,” said Heather Coladonato, president and CEO of the Desert Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce. “The chamber is excited for this project, along with future corridor projects, as they continue to create jobs and generate additional tax revenue in the city.” According to sources, B o r re g o S o l a r b ro u g h t

Incumbent Scott Matas

From Desert Star Staff DESERT HOT SPRINGS – Four candidates, including two incumbents, are in the running for city council during the municipal election here on Nov. 5. Newcomers Robert Bentley, an author, journalist and reverend, and newcomer Joe McKee, a retired corporate manager, are in the contest not only against each other but incumbents Scott Matas and Jan Pye, who are presenting a unified city council reelection front together with incumbent mayoral candidate Yvonne Parks. As it did with the city’s

ConEdison Solutions in as the financing partner on the project — in essence making ConEdison Solutions the system owner. Total cost of the solar installation is expected to land between $7-9 million. The project’s solar panels, which are mounted on frames that will track the sun from east to west, are expected to produce about 6,000 megawatts of electricity per year — enough to power about 611 houses.

Tough Lessons for Our Kids—and Us All

By Kevin Powell If I still had children at home, I think I’d keep the television turned off this week. Not that the past month or so has been anything we’d want our kids to see or hear, but this week may carry us to an even lower low. When did it become okay for our elected leaders to call the opposition terrorists, blackmailers, extortionists and worse? How would you reprimand your sons and daughters if you heard them talking about classmates in this manner? What happened to the old adage that if you didn’t have anything good to say, then keep your mouth shut?

Put another way: Don’t let any unwholesome talk come from your mouth — only that which helps build others up. Our founding fathers were very far apart on many issues, but they were able to put those divisive concerns aside to form a new nation against an even greater evil. And they were able to do so when not one of them was paid a single cent or had a solitary benefit. Their compensation for accepting a leadership position was to risk their very lives for daring to stand up against an overwhelming enemy. There are few if any elected leaders today who would try to meet that standard. And again, as sad as this is, it’s very tragic when we look at it through the eyes of our children. This is not how we want them to grow up and act in the future. As far as the markets go, all investors should really consider preparing their portfolios for continued gridlock. No one knows what will happen if an unthinkable default occurs, but it won’t be pretty. Losses could be severe. 2013 has been a very good year

and we have been selling some positions last week and this week to lock in some of those gains. If an agreement is reached and the markets stabilize, then we will take new positions. The next 12 months could offer investors the opportunity

for gains in the stock market. It might be a good time to look at more defensive companies that are not interest rate-sensitive. Interest rates will almost certainly be higher in 2014 than they have this year.

Operation Safe House Assists Troubled Youth

By Investigator Lance Colmer PALM DESERT – Law enforcement is often faced with situations involving runaway or homeless youths, or intervening in a family dispute concerning an angry or incorrigible teen. Often these calls do not include any criminal wrong-doing, but rather an emotional crisis between family members. Many teens, feeling as though they have nowhere to turn, respond by threatening to run away. Police agencies throughout Riverside County have relied on Operation Safe House as a dependable and positive alternative when encountering troubled or runaway youth. Runaway youth are often at greater risk of becoming pregnant

or contracting sexually transmitted diseases. Runaways can soon find themselves in a situation beyond their control and many become victims of crime. Still others get involved with criminal activities like shoplifting, robbery, prostitution, pornography or drug sales in order to support themselves on the streets. Operation Safe House is a private, non-profit emergency shelter program providing immediate help to youth and families experiencing crisis situations. It offers core essential services to runaways or homeless teens and young adults, providing emergency crisis intervention and support for approximately 800 youths annually. Services include a structured 14-day program

consisting of daily counseling sessions with a family counselor, formal secondary education, peerfacilitated support groups and a collaborative educational effort with community agencies such as Alternatives to Domestic Violence, Inland AIDS Project, and The Rape Crisis Center. The Safe House staff is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and shelters are located in Riverside and Thousand Palms. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department has announced that it will be partnering with Operation Safe House in asking the communities of the Coachella Valley to help “Stuff the Bus” with items needed to support the youth involved in the program. Utility Tax Sparks Heated Recall

Excerpts from a History of Desert Hot Springs By John J. Hunt During the summer of 1993, political rumblings were heard again in Desert Hot Springs. The city council had decided to institute a tax on all utilities, up to five percent. The voice of Fred Engelberg rose commandingly at council meetings, and he was gaining support from the citizens. I attended some of these meetings and it was clear both sides would not relent, and that a confrontation was looming. Engelberg spoke for a large segment of concerned residents; in fact, their only option was to mount a recall campaign.

And when the Desert Sentinel newspaper announced on November 3, “Council adopts utility tax; recall follows,” the battle was on. Engelberg, who passed away last year, was at the forefront of the recall drive. This is how I describe it in my book “The Waters of Comfort (The Story of Desert Hot Springs, California)”: “The Chairman of the Committee to Recall continued firing salvos on a regular basis, each one with the weight of 1,550 citizens who had signed a petition against the tax. The crux of their argument appeared on

February 16: ‘The staff-councilcombine runs the city unchecked, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars every month, but the people have little or nothing to say but complain that it’s wrong.’ “This is the most volatile of complaints that Americans can utter. Engelberg is well aware of its implications. And he takes it to heights that reach the patriotic. He wants to take on City Hall, he wants to show them, and the world, ‘…that some people care enough to be in charge of their own government. It is our right, our obligation, and our American way.’ “… On September 13, this effort swamped the gunwales and the ship of state foundered: ‘Voters support recall effort; oust entire council,’ is how the paper put it. “... In fact many supporters of the recall movement had expected Engelberg to assume a running slot before the [new] race, with their hearty support; but the indefatigable letter writer and signature-getter did not organize the campaign with his own self interests in mind… Perhaps the act of exciting people to action was enough. With the controlled growth movement of the 1980s, and now this recall, he had set an example for citizens everywhere: You can fight City Hall! “… And as disgusted and disgruntled as Engelberg may have been at times, he did not cease to promote the waters, and the benefits derived from them; his utter belief in the value of his enterprise could not be shaken.” To be continued… October 16, 2013

Cabot Yerxa, (1883-1965), historically referred to as the Father of Desert Hot Springs, homesteaded land on Miracle Hill from 1913 to 1918, and later wrote a long series of articles about his desert experiences that were published the Desert Sentinel newspaper. Cabot’s Museum Foundation has reprinted that series of articles in a book, “On the Desert Since 1913,” which is available at the museum trading post and on their website. Here’s another installment from the historical book. (Introduction by Richard Brown, Cabot’s Museum Foundation Board Member)

[Article 34: March 6, 1952] By Cabot Yerxa There he sat and smoked his pipe in peace and quiet. Frank did not crave company, but rather resented intrusion. I never saw him read a book. He would glance over a newspaper. However, he valued it as an easy way to start a fire. He could have homesteaded any piece of land in the desert from Banning to the Mexican line, but nothing in this world could get him to live in a house settled down in one spot. He liked to roam, and he liked his three burros. He was a thoroughly contented and happy man. So who can say that it is better to live in a city and chase the elusive dollar, in the hope that at some future date, enough dollars will have been captured with which to buy happiness. Dutch Frank was already happy without the dollars. He paid no attention whatever to desert animals. He in a good-natured way took them for granted, and was amused rather than angry at what they did, never resentful. He protected his outfit and belongings as best he could, but if they outwitted him and cut a hole in the flour sack, he only laughed. Snakes meant no more to him than flies; they were a nuisance, but nothing to be afraid of. He slept on the ground in a rattlesnake country without the slightest thought of them or any nervousness. Bob Carr always viewed

any situation from the dramatic angle, because he was a born story-teller. One day after the wood boxes were heaped high and all the water pails full to the top in both cabins, he and I got to discussing what two men could do with their bare hands if lost in the desert without food or equipment. Or [if they were] two Indians running away from marauding tribes. So we approached the problem this way. We hunted round for clay, carried some to Two Bunch water hole, formed a shallow wide dish, and hastily burned it. Although badly cracked, it served our purpose to bring more clay to our pottery work spot. We had used matches to start our fire, as twirling a stick to get a flame we considered unnecessary time loss. Having now abundant clay and water, we fashioned a crude olla to hold a gallon of water, and a rather deep dish with thick walls to cook with. Also we formed two small bowls to eat out of, and made two clumsy spoons. We placed these articles to dry slowly, and later in the day fired them in hot ashes. They held water. With carefully selected stones of the proper size, we set out on the prowl for food. We succeeded in obtaining three small birds, and after a time one small cottontail rabbit fell to our barrage of stones. We could not in fairness use a knife, so we used sharp pointed sticks to aide in skinning and cleaning our game. After searching, we found a rock with an edge sharp enough to sever the heads and feet, and to cut up the birds and rabbit into small pieces. We filled the deep dish with water, threw in the pieces of meat, and started them to cook over a fire. Some mesquite beans were gathered, cut up, and added to the stew. Several sage leaves were added to give flavor. After considerable time the food was ready and served in the individual bowls, and we had our clay spoons to use. Thus refreshed, we gathered branches and palm leaves to build an Indian-style wickiup and were well launched in the business of house-keeping. www.desertstarweekly.com

Matas on Attracting Business: Our economic development plan has been in place for over two years and we are seeing continue growth and interest in our community. The following projects are either inquiring about Desert Hot Springs or in some sort of permit/ construction phase (as of Oct. 6): 1. Borrego Solar (under construction) 2. Borrego Community Health (construction completed 8/13) 3. Pierson Plaza-County Office Building (in for construction permits) 4. Rio Ranch Markets (approved, awaiting building plans) 5. Wal-Mart & ancillary retail pads (processing EIR) 6. Unnamed Regional Fuel Facility* 7. Infill retail project on Palm (between 2nd & 3rd) development 8. Family Dollar (working through DOF approval process to sell land) 9. Walton Development (two (2) master planned communities Highland Falls, Tuscan Hills) (working through plans for homes, retail, hotels) 10. ARES Logistic facility (2.6 million sq. ft.) (User A) 11. ARES Logistic facility (User B) 12. YK Spa (10 room boutique hotel under construction) 13. Unnamed Restaurant-A on Palm (working on land acquisition through governmental agency)* 14. Unnamed Restaurant-B on Palm (working on land acquisition through government agency)* 15. Unnamed Restaurant-C on Pierson* 16. Unnamed Restaurant-D on Palm (within proposed WalMart Center)*

17. Remodel/Rehabilitation of Spring of Eden Hotel 18. Remodel/Rehabilitation of Hyundae Hotel 19. Lease negotiations with unnamed user for former RDA property** 20. Land sale negotiations with unnamed user for former RDA property** (*) Unnamed tenants/users until their property acquisition negotiations are completed (all private sector negotiations) The Economic Development Committee is focused on bringing more retailers to our community as the economy rebounds. Matas on Budget Balancing: Staff is working through recommendations on how each department head will balance their department’s budget; we then need to reduce our spending according to the projected updates we will receive in November. We can increase revenue from our economic development strategy and work to make minimal cuts to city services. Public safety will never receive a vote from me on cuts; I believe with professional, sensible decision-making from our staff, we can cut in contracts and nonessential services for a balanced budget. In the last two months, our staff has renegotiated two contracts and has saved the city approximately $300,000.00; this is a start. Matas’s Ideal DHS: Six years ago when elected our current city council made progress in attending every meeting and promoting Desert Hot Springs throughout the county and state. Today we are respected and the image of Desert Hot Springs is better but more work needs to be done. We have plans to enhance tourism (Miracle Hill Plan) and economic development (awardwinning strategy plan). We can capitalize on the national parks plan to merge several thousand acres into Joshua Tree National Monument just north of our city (Sand to Snow National monument plan). We have

McKee on Attracting Business: Our first priority is to raise the average household income to a level that comfortably supports families. This will not be achieved by bringing in more minimum-wage, part-time retail jobs that offer no benefits. We must attract industry with its higher hourly wage scale and benefits package. Because of our unique access to critical resources — abundant energy, transportation infrastructure, open land — we can offer advantageous, competitive sites for development of the manufacturing segment. We need to develop educational opportunities so that our residents qualify for these higher-paying jobs. In addition to anchoring the downtown business district with a school to train people for better jobs, I believe we should pressure the Palm Springs School District to develop a true vocational education program at Desert Hot Springs High School. I share with the incumbents a wish to “enhance the Desert Hot Springs shopping experience,” but that cannot be achieved until the poor economic situation of our residents is turned around. My opponents have put the cart before the horse in this case. They have allowed the dream of increased sales tax revenues to blind them to the reality that people do not earn enough to shop for entertainment. City government serves the interests of its citizens, not the other way around. When families prosper, retail business will come, and government income will increase. McKee on Budget Balancing: The budget problem we face is not a surprise. The present majority hoped we could grow our way out of the problem, but as early as 2009, consultants warned of huge deficits in 2013 and beyond. The incumbents reacted by increasing spending. They have resisted reducing the salaries and costs of city employees and contractors. According to the Urban Futures report, city salaries, retirement and benefits cost the city $181,000 per employee. These costs amount to 80 percent of the budget. Spending is our deeper problem. We now spend at a rate 38 percent higher than like cities. Those cities spend at a rate of around $425 per person. Our rate is $670 per person. We need to study these cities to find out October 16, 2013

Desert Hot Springs city council candidate Joe McKee how they provide services more efficiently. Without reducing payroll and streamlining departmental efficiencies, they have no choice but to raise taxes. My opponents say they will not raise taxes but they have not told us how they will reverse the city deficit. If reelected, councilpersons Matas and Pye will ask you to pay more. I promise not to raise your taxes or fees. We have to live within our means. McKee’s Ideal DHS: In my view, citizens are the future of Desert Hot Springs. It is the responsibility of city government to create a safe environment, maintain infrastructure, educate and nurture our children through recreational opportunities, and perhaps most important, create a business-friendly community that supports its citizens with good wages. Desert Hot Springs has the greatest people in the valley. They are our best resource. Our town is not a good place to live. It’s a great place to live. We have to get over the continuous media drumbeat that it is dangerous to live here.

During every election cycle, all we hear is public safety is our number-one priority, as if there is danger lurking behind every lamppost. Public safety is much more than arresting people. It is fire protection. It is having access to help when you need it. It is an environment where children are educated in a caring, safe environment. It is providing our children with a path to success that does not include gang membership. It is a city where everyone has the ability to earn a living that will support a family without having to work more than seventy hours a week. It is a city in which property values increase because everyone wants to live here. We spend way too much time fighting and not enough time listening. All of us want a clean beautiful city. All of us have a piece of the puzzle that will get us there. Government is not about getting your way. It is about working as a team. Not a team of three, but a team of five. I promise to provide both leadership and the willingness to work together to reach our goals.

DESERT HOT SPRINGS city council CANDIDATE SPECIAL Continued from Page 6

Pye on Attracting Business: Our role as your city leaders is to be a positive partner with our local business community. What sells a city today is quality of lifestyle, an available workforce, affordability of housing and cooperation from city staff. We have that in Desert Hot Springs, and my role as one of your city council members is to make that story known to potential new businesses. I have been consistent with this endeavor. Our economic development team, including the Economic Development Committee, Chamber of Commerce, local business leaders, property owners and staff, has been working to recruit new retailers and industries to our community in order to provide more shopping and well-paying employment opportunities.

Encouraging new development is one of the keys to improving our local economy, creating jobs and generating the new municipal revenues that are needed to effectively run our city. Pye on Budget Balancing: We are cautious and we critically review the budget. We are currently directing staff to identify where budgets may be trimmed and where greater efficiency measures may be implemented while still providing essential public safety and other needed services to protect our residents and the quality of life in Desert Hot Springs. The best path to a sensible budget is transparency. Since November 2012, I have chaired a new Finance Committee comprised of local residents, business and property owners. This committee is open to the public and meeting notices are posted on the city website. The Committee’s budget recommendations are currently under review by city staff and will soon be presented to the

city council for policy decisions and direction. Pye’s Ideal DHS: By continuing to work as a team with fellow council members, staff, and the community at large, I can help bury the negative image. This has already started; the word “desperate” is fading as part of our name. Also, by attending regional meetings regularly, we as public officials can display a new and consistent image and mentality for our beloved city. It is working; proof is in the development activity. Some of our economic development accomplishments include: The Innovation Hub (I-HUB) — a collaboration of Palm Springs, Cathedral City and Desert Hot Springs. This program gives small businesses a launching pad to grow, create local well-paying jobs and contribute to our local economy. This I-Hub is recognized as one of the best operating in California. The new Dollar General Store that is already showing tremendous success in our community. We have attracted the

4.7 percent, up $51.3 billion over 2012-13. “This continuing gain in property values is an encouraging sign for our Southern California economy,” said Steel. The assessed valuation in California’s 15 coastal counties (which, in total, account for more than 60 percent of total assessed valuation) gained 4.1 percent, while valuations in the 43 inland counties rose 4.6 percent. Year-to-year percentage changes ranged from a high of an 8.3 percent gain in Santa Clara County to a low of a 4.1 percent decline in Inyo County. Statewide, the total value of state- and county-assessed property increased for a third

straight year. For 2013-14, values rose to $4.636 trillion, an increase of $191.5 billion (4.3 percent) from the previous year. The statewide value of property assessed by county governments increased $187.9 billion (4.3 percent) to $4.545 trillion. The value of property assessed by BOE staff, mainly privately owned public utilities and railroads, totaled $90.8 billion — an increase of $3.7 billion (4.2 percent). In all, 51 counties posted year-to-year increases in assessed value, with the majority of those increases coming in at above two percent. Ten counties grew in excess of five percent.

Chiefs Slay Dragons, Take First Place

Quarterback Sammy Chavez (#1) leads the Desert Chiefs to their eighth straight win. (Photo by Dan Marinelli( By Dan Marinelli PALM DESERT – The Desert Chiefs managed to crawl away with a victory last Saturday night in their closest, most competitive game in four weeks. The San Fernando Valleybased California Dragons came into Palm Desert High School with one goal in mind: upsetting the second-place, 7-0 Desert Chiefs. The Dragons showed up to play a smart, competitive game. They were determined to deny Komani Harper, who had returned kicks for touchdowns in each of his three previous games, an opportunity to touch the ball. The Dragons knew how

dangerous Harper could be and intentionally aimed their kicks at alternate returners Nick Lee, Alfredo Melendez and Thaniel Lee the entire night. Had Harper been given an opportunity to return anything, the Chiefs would have likely put more points on the board. Due to the absence of starting quarterback Brent Rausch, the Chiefs got off to a slow start offensively. In Rausch’s absence, starting wide receiver and backup quarterback Gaston Bailey would get his first-ever start at quarterback for the Chiefs. Bailey is no slouch; he had seen time at the quarterback position in the previous two games

By Dan Marinelli PALM DESERT – The lights were bright at Palm Desert High School last Friday, but the brightest light was senior Aztec running back Trae Riek. In front of at least 1,200 attendees, the Palm Desert High Aztecs (1-0 in Desert Valley League, 2-4 overall) squared off against the Cathedral City High Lions (0-1 in Desert Valley League, 5-1 Overall) in the first game of the Desert Valley League (DVL) season. In a matchup between two upper-tier DVL teams, whoever wins will set themselves up nicely for one of the three automatic playoff berths allotted to the DVL. The task would not be easy, though, as the Lions would have to play this game with a noticeable disadvantage. In this game, Trae Riek should have been opposite the Lions’ star-running back, Orlando Wallace, but due to an ejection against Twentynine Palms the week before, the Lions were forced to play without him. However, the Aztecs did have Riek — and they exploited him. With Riek in the backfield for the Aztecs, the game was

almost decided before the second quarter even started. On 11 carries, Riek ran for 193-yards and made two touchdowns, lifting the Aztecs to an early 21-7 lead. “He’s just a good running back,” said Aztecs Head Coach Patrick Blackburn. “He’s got good vision, good speed, but you’ve got to give a lot of credit to the offensive line. They created holes for him all night. He also got a lot of yards after contact.” On the Aztecs’ opening drive of the second quarter, Riek picked up where he left off. Riek carried the ball 36 yards for a touchdown, tacking onto his ridiculous stat line and extending the Aztec lead by another seven points. Despite the absence of Wallace, the Lions did have some offensive star power of their own. Thanks to an exceptional firsthalf performance by senior wide receiver James Rodriguez, the Lions were able to close the gap by halftime. Rodriguez caught two touchdown passes and a returned a 93-yard kickoff for a touchdown to bring the Lions to within seven at halftime. The Aztecs were up 35-28 and kept

and had three touchdowns. In this game, however, Bailey looked somewhat rattled from the beginning. The Chiefs’ first drive of the game was capped with a snap over Bailey’s head, resulting in a safety. The Dragons started the game with and early, and rare, 2-0 lead. Midway through the second quarter, the Chiefs moved Bailey back to his, more familiar, receiving role and put Sammy Chavez in at quarterback. “Gaston stepped up and started the game,” said Desert Chiefs Head Coach Josiah Jackson. “We had our second string quarterback, Sammy

Chavez, who came back from an early-season injury, warm, and ready to play. We thought it would be better to put Gaston back in a position that calls for his athleticism and give Sammy a shot.” Coach Jackson’s call to insert Chavez was spot-on. Chavez’ first pass of the game was a 19yard touchdown pass to Gaston Bailey, putting the Chiefs ahead by five but only for a short time. The Dragons, unlike most Chiefs’ opponents, would not fold. With almost five minutes gone by in the second half, the Dragons marched 92 yards in two and a half minutes and scored a touchdown on a oneyard running play. The Dragons would take their second lead of the game, 8-7. The Dragons’ ability to quickly answer the Chiefs left the latter team’s players scratching their heads. No team they’ve faced all year has played them so tightly. The Dragons took Harper’s return game out of the picture but they did not take his running game away from the backfield. The next Chiefs drive started with a 60-yard Thaniel Lee kickoff return. Harper did the rest of the work, taking the ball 40 yards in three carries, for the touchdown. The Chiefs reclaimed the lead, 14-8, and would never look back. The Chiefs would score two more times in the game. The first was on a 15-yard pass to Ricky Festa at the end of the third quarter. The second was

on a 33-yard pass to Nick Lee to start the fourth quarter. On those touchdowns, the Chiefs missed one of their two extra points leaving them ahead of the Dragons, 27-8. The Dragons did their best to give the Desert Chiefs a run for their money. One play after Nick Lee caught his touchdown pass, the Dragons ran a kickoff back for a touchdown. Because of a missed extra point, the Dragons trailed by 13 points, 27-14. After forcing a quick three and out, the Dragons regained possession and scored an unanswered touchdown with five minutes left in the game. A failed two-point conversion attempt caused the Chiefs’ lead to shrink to just seven. With possession, and just a short amount of time remaining, the Chiefs should have easily been able to run out the last few minutes on the clock. However, the Dragons forced the Chiefs to punt, giving the Dragons one more shot to tie the game with 1:45 left to play. The Chiefs would force three straight Dragon incomplete passes and win the game by a one-touchdown margin, 27-20. The Desert Chiefs improved to 8-0 on the season and moved into first place. This Friday, the Chiefs go on the road to face the only other undefeated team in the conference, the second place SoCal Apaches. The game will be at Santa Fe Springs and starts at 7:30 p.m.

In the second half, the Lions’ defense still could not stop the Aztecs’ offense. Aztecs receiver Tate Oligney caught a 30-yard touchdown pass in the third; in the fourth, Tommy Jacobsson ran an option play into the end zone for the touchdown. The Lions would end up scoring one more time in the game on an 11-yard Justin October 16, 2013

Dorsey touchdown carry, but his score was too little, too late. The Aztecs would tack on one more field goal before time expired. The Lions lost their league opener, 52-35. Trae Riek ended the game with an astounding 42 rushing attempts, 456 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Riek’s performance was so good, it was historic. “He broke our old, single-game, rushing

record by over 100 yards,” said Coach Blackburn. In what looks to be a good matchup this Friday, Palm Desert High School will go on the road to play another undefeated team in the DVL, the Palm Springs High Indians. Cathedral City High School will look to get their first DVL win of the season, playing at the winless Indio High School Rajahs. Both games start at 7 p.m. www.desertstarweekly.com

Feartastic to Scare Up Halloween Fun film

PALM SPRINGS – Already known for its great weather and resort lifestyle, this city is about to become known for something a bit more sinister: horror movies. Kicking-off on Halloween night, Oct. 31, the inaugural Feartastic Film Festival begins on Oct. 31 with BB’s Monster Rock Halloween Party at the Hard

Rock Hotel Palm Springs and includes five frightfully fantastic film screenings on Nov. 1-2 at the Camelot Theaters. An intense, nail-biting selection of indie fright flicks have been chosen for both their scare factor and atypical plots and storylines. Ranging from dark to romantic to downright scary, the films scheduled are “Contracted,” “Dead Weight,” “Delivery,” “Here Comes the Devil” and “The Second Death.” Each has gained

notoriety at festivals around the U.S. and overseas, and all will bring their unique horrific vision to the desert for the very first time. “Our mission is to create a film festival unlike any other,” said Kim Waltrip, Partner at Troupe Productions and Feartastic producer and creator. “These are not just your typical horror genre films. We searched for films that would create a few good screams, as well as put a stamp on the Feartastic Film Festival as

DHS ELKS LODGE Presents 5 annual monte carlo night

being unique and visionary.” Already buzz-worthy, the films at Feartastic take the genre in new directions. “Contracted” was nominated for the Chicago International Film Festival’s Q-Hugo Film Award for LGBTQ films, while “Dead Weight” took home awards at the Madison Horror Film Festival. “The Second Death” has been a hit with overseas audiences and “Here Comes the Devil” played at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival. In addition to the screenings, Feartastic includes an excellent series of panel discussions with the filmmakers. Tickets are available for individual events or via a special VIP All Access Pass, which includes VIP seating at all

films, one ticket to BB’s Monster Rock Party, tickets to both panel discussions and one ticket to the post-event cocktail party. Individual tickets for each film and panel can be purchased for $10 and individual tickets to BB’s Monster Rock Party are $40. The VIP All Access Pass is $99. Schedule and info: www. feartastic.com.

Weighing the Ethics of Longevity A Rabbi Muses on Life Extension

Will the output of radical life extension represent modern humankind’s Tower of Babel?

By Art Kunkin (Mr. Life Extension) I want to thank Rabbi Brad L. Bloom for sharing the following thoughts. I have edited his words to fit in this space. There is an old Hebrew expression for wishing someone a long life: “Ad Meah V’es-rim.” It means you should live to be 120 years old. The number refers to the final age of Moses before God called him to his destiny. From Deuteronomy chapter 34: “So Moses died there in the land of Moab... And Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died; his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated.” How did he live such a long life? It surely wasn’t through modern means of extending life, such as severe restriction

of caloric intake, gene therapy, stem cell transplant or drug therapies. These are just a few of the techniques being discussed and experimented with in scientific circles — part of an exciting new field of medical research that focuses on radical life extension. A recent paper published by the Pew Research Foundation, “To Count Our Days: The Scientific and Ethical Dimensions of Radical Life Extension,” discusses the medical and technological advances in this burgeoning field. Several scientific disciplines are demonstrating the possibility that — within the next 50 years — the human life span will increase by several decades. Futurists predict that one day human beings will even

transcend biological science and transport their consciousness into machines, living for even longer periods of time. There is no end to the imagination of what might become of the human species in the centuries and millennia to come. The implications — even in the short run — are enormous. Just think: If we were able to extend within three decades the average life span from today’s 78 to 100, what would be the economic impact upon jobs, Medicare and Social Security? How would our understanding about marriage and child-rearing change? What about the ethical challenges that would arise were such technology to be unleashed into the free market? Imagine a time in the not-sodistant future when technology enables our society to rewire a human nervous system or clone, or harvest and implant bones and organs simultaneously into one person. But only the very rich could afford these gifts of human ingenuity. Businesses and government would end up playing the role of God, deciding who shall live or die. It comes down to the Golden Rule: Those with the gold, rule. The Pew Center’s study includes interviews with religious leaders from all the major religions in America. No clergy cited any particular religious law that would oppose radical life extension technology. All of them spoke favorably of the great possibilities of curing diseases such as cancer and dementia. Yet, there is no limit to the questions. Does achieving longevity equal greater wisdom? Will longevity enable us to prepare for death and fear it less? Will the output of radical life extension represent modern humankind’s Tower of Babel? If the average life span is 100, will we as a species better value human life and the environment — of which we are supposed to be stewards, as it is written in Genesis? Columnist Rabbi Brad L. The total amount of the unpaid balance with interest thereon of the obligation secured by the property to be sold plus reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is $383,976.44. It is possible that at the time of sale the opening bid may be less than the total indebtedness due. In addition to cash, the Trustee will accept cashier’s checks drawn on a state or national bank, a check drawn by a state or federal credit union, or a check drawn by a state or federal savings and loan association, savings association, or savings bank specified in Section 5102 of the Financial Code and authorized to do business in this state. Said sale will be made, in an ‘’AS IS’’ condition, but without covenant or warranty, express or implied, regarding title, possession or encumbrances, to satisfy the indebtedness secured by said Deed of Trust, advances thereunder, with interest as provided, and the unpaid principal of the Note secured by said Deed of Trust with interest thereon as provided in said Note, plus fees, charges and expenses of the Trustee and of the trusts created by said Deed of Trust. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. By Jackie Devereaux PALM SPRINGS – The U.S. Supreme Court handed down a historic ruling on Wednesday, Jun. 26 to grant same sex marriages across the nation. In their ruling on DOMA and California’s Proposition 8, the justices overturned a previous lower court ruling which declared same sex marriage unconstitutional. Within minutes of the landmark ruling, local hoteliers and wedding planners scrambled to promote Palm Springs as a premiere wedding destination. “The Supreme Court’s

As well-manicured and coifed ladies resembling Grace Kelly — escorted by their dashing escorts in spiffy white bucks and saddle shoes — arrived, they headed to the bar for cool Gin Rickey. The alternative? A “candy bar” jampacked with retro candy bars from Pearson’s Salted Nut Rolls to chocolate marshmallow Rocky Roads. The oodles of sweets reminded us that the fifties were “anything goes” when it came to countless concoctions drenched in corn syrup. J. Chris Mobley, chairman of Modernism Week, was among those enjoying the resounding success of the three-hour event, which began with a musical blast from the past — courtesy of Perez Prado, “King of the Mambo,” the mid-century dance craze. “I haven’t heard ‘Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White’ since 1952!” remarked photographer Pat Krause. by TV commercials of yore sporting familiar jingles, such as “You’ll Wonder Where the Yellow Went, When you Brush Your Teeth with Pepsodent!” Reinforcing the mid-century milieu were stunning fashions presented by De Ja Vu, Vintage Finery in the Uptown Design District. Models accessorized to the hilt with David Webb costume jewelry and ankle-strap high heels worked the runway, reminding the audience that Palm Springs once was the fabled hideaway of legends like Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Ava Gardner and Lana Turner. Black-and-white polka dot dresses and crinoline petticoats aside, nostalgia came in many forms this starry night. Posing by a candy-apple red 1958 Mark III convertible parked in front of Design 849, David Parker, owner of the Body Deli across the street, gushed: “Is this for real? It’s four times longer than my two-seat BMW!” What a wonderful blast from the past! Pam Price also reports on desert events for www.forbes.com/ sites/pamprice.
