El Paseo Pink Walk

Big group of Renova Solar walkers. Photo by Pat Krause

The 11th Annual Palm Desert Breast Cancer Awareness Month drive Story and Photos by Pat Krause El Paseo was once again filled with Pink T-shirts as the El Paseo Walk for Cancer was held on Saturday, October 14th. This is a yearly event to raise money to fight cancer and raise awareness about Breast cancer as well as all other cancers.

Hundreds of men, women, children and even dogs came out to support this greatcause in the effort to eradicate cancers. Pink hair, t-shirts and lots of pink beads. You could tell the Cancer survivors because they all wore a large amount of pink beads. The walk went from Monterey

Ave to San Luis Rey Rd. All the streets coming into El Paseo were barricaded for the safety of the walkers. A band of young performers, Minor Emergency, played in the median at San Luis Rey for the many walkers that started there. Music and a large arch of Pink Balloons

By Desert Star Staff The music of the late John Denver is like an old friend, outlasting trends and standing the test of time. Join acclaimed performer Jim Curry for this tribute to the music of one of the most beloved singer/songwriters ever to grace the stage. Jim has performed Denver’s music in sold out shows throughout the country, and has emerged as today’s top performer of Denver’s vast legacy of multi-Platinum hits. Jim’s uncanny ability to mirror John’s voice and clean-cut look takes you back to the time when “Rocky Mountain High,” “Sunshine,”

“Calypso,” and “Annie’s Song” topped the charts. Jim Curry began his music career writing and performing the opening song, “The Time of Your Life,” for his senior play. The song was then voted to be the 1975 class song and Jim was awarded a Rotary Scholarship to study music in college. Even at this early stage in his life, Jim’s natural voice resembled that of singer/songwriter John Denver. Embracing the similarities, Jim continued to sing and specialize in John’s songs, sharing John’s positive messages of love, humanity and environmental awareness. The untimely death of John

Denver in 1997 was a tragedy that was felt the world over. Such a void in the musical world left John’s fans demanding that his music survive. CBS television responded by producing a made for TV movie, “Take Me Home: The John Denver Story.” Jim landed an off-camera role singing as the voice of John Denver, and this experience inspired Jim to produce full-length John Denver tribute concerts. He’s not your usual Vegas style impersonator. In fact, he is not an impersonator at all. Jim sings, in his own natural voice, a tribute to the music in a way

giving out little bags of gifts and refreshments. One store took names for a lottery by donating a tesla car for 24 hours. Signs supporting the walk were in almost every window along the way and restaurants were open for the hungry. Other businesses Continues on Page 12

Greer passed away and left an amazing art collection. Her daughters Ann Greer and Norma Fishkind brought her personal art collection for viewing and sale to the Gallery. The thank you party was held on October 11th that had close to 100 friends

of Greer attending. Friends celebrated Greer’ birthday by viewing her collection of art and trading stories of their friend. 849 Restaurant provided the tasty treats and guests had their choice of various wines for tasting. Greer’s art included many works by local and famous artists. Almost all the pieces were for sale but there were a few private pieces that will stay with the daughters. A few of

the pieces were of Greer or had her face in the art. The art was on display from October 12th thru the 15th with many pieces sold. There were 35 paintings from her personal collection in the showing. A portion of all sales will be donated to Act for MS, a charity Greer founded when her daughter Norma was diagnosed with that disease. Some of the art displayed were of artists, John Morris, Ilona Von Ronay and the

This year’s presenters were Prime Time International and Contour Dermatology Center. This is one fun party with gambling, dancing, bull riding, a Paintball shooting gallery and more. The party was held at one of the best party venues in the Desert. This inexpensive outdoor area has lots of parking and is a little out of the way for privacy if needed. It is a replica of a western town so guests were dressed in cowboy gear for the night. Guests were each given a $100-dollar chip on entry to gamble away. There were about 10 blackjack tables, a roulette table and a craps table. Dealers were eager to teach newcomers the games and

were hoping to let guests win. The chips won were traded in for tickets for a raffle of many prizes including a TV set. Screams and hollers were heard when a guest won big at one of the tables. While the gamblers were busy others were dancing to a great Jim Nelson band that had everyone tapping their toes at their tables if they weren’t on the dance floor. There was great grub that included BBQ ribs, sweet corn, lasagna, salads, a small Bundt cake for dessert and more. There was a bar western style where each guest had been given 2 drink tickets. A silent auction held numerous items that took several tables to show them all. There was a silent auction later in the night. One competition that had a lot of guests watching was the bull riding contest. Sponsors would donate $100 for their favorite

rider. The winner received $500 but it was not an easy victory. The mechanical bull was located in a huge air filled bumper type so no one would get hurt. Guests cheered for each rider. The raffle was held at the end of the night after all the gamblers had turned in their winnings for tickets. Big Brothers Big Sisters is celebrating 20 years of mentoring. Eleven Sure-Fire Ways to Frustrate HOA Elections By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Most associations have member voting at least annually, and the process required by statute applies to all HOAs, whether 2 units in Redondo Beach or 3,000 units in Oakland. Avoid these mistakes which can doom HOA elections. 1. Ignore the procedure. Civil Code Sections 51005135 provide a process which must be followed on member votes regarding major assessments, governing document amendments, grants of exclusive use rights, and

board elections. Many smaller HOAs either intentionally or ignorantly do not follow the process, leaving their elections open to challenge. 2. Don’t have election rules. Civil Code 5105 requires HOAs have written election rules in place. These rules help answer questions in advance, making for more organized and fairer elections. 3. Forget to appoint an inspector of elections. When setting an election, associations occasionally fail to appoint or hire an inspector to conduct the process. This appointment must occur in an open board meeting. Inspectors may be paid professional vendors or may be homeowner volunteers. 4. Allow proxies. Most developer-supplied original HOA bylaws allow for the use of proxies, by which members give to another member the right to vote on their behalf. California statutes provide little guidance as to what is a valid proxy, and proxy disputes

(and sometimes chicanery) are a common problem in HOA elections. Proxies are unnecessary, since on most important HOA votes members receive ballots 30 days ahead of the election. HOAs are better served by, through member vote, amending governing documents to ban proxies except for the narrow purpose of achieving quorum. 5. Skip vote counting in uncontested elections. It may make no sense to go through the process of opening and counting ballots when only three candidates are running for three open seats, but that is what the law presently requires. The Community Associations Institute has for years recommended amending the statute and currently sponsors AB 1426, which would allow associations to dispense with vote counting if the number of candidates matches the number of seats to be filled. 6. Allow the inspector of election to make legal

decisions. The inspector’s role under Civil Code 5110 is to determine the validity of proxies, voting eligibility, and other specified issues. However, most inspectors are not lawyers, and may need legal input. Inspectors who will not rely upon HOA legal counsel should have their own lawyers. 7. Don’t include a full copy of a proposed CC&Rs or bylaw amendment with the ballot. Civil Code 5115(e), added in 2014 to the Davis-Stirling Act, requires the verbatim proposed CC&Rs or bylaw amendment be sent with the ballot to all members. 8. Ask the manager to be inspector. Civil Code 5110(b) prohibits a regular HOA vendor from serving as inspector unless the election rules authorize it. 9. Allow manager or vendors to support (or oppose) board candidates. Managers and HOA vendors (including the HOA’s attorney) must be

neutral on elections, and any violation of that neutrality is a violation of their ethics. Insist your manager and vendors avoid endorsing, helping, or opposing any candidates. 10. Don’t announce the election results. Civil Code 5120(b) requires that results be announced in writing within 15 days. 11. Don’t participate. Healthy HOAs need their members to participate, at least by voting. Failed quorums will defeat elections every time.

By Janice Gough The end of the Bull market may be coming soon. Market strategist experts predict the correction in the next year or two. What we have right now looks a lot like 1999. I remember sitting in a meeting with the CEO of American Funds at that time. It was just before the 2000 correction. He painted a picture of the decline. as if it was a rock gathering moss as it tumbled and the greater it grew the more devastation it took from everyone’s wealth. He warned that too many investors had margins on their portfolios. A margin is taking up to 50% loan on your investment to purchase other investments, however “margin calls” require immediate repayment when investments decline. This margin call would force investors to sell assets at a loss to pay off margins, causing even greater loses. A few months after the 2000 crash ended, the major U.S. stock market indexes peaked and declined almost steadily through a short-run recession during much of 2001 until September 2002. The Nasdaq didn’t recover those losses until April 2015; the S&P reached its previous peak in 2007. Another crash, some of us remember was Thirty years ago, October 19, 1987, named “Black Monday” in which the Dow shed 508 points with a 22% market correction. No one can predict when it will happen, however understanding the dynamics of those previous markets and that the dynamics of today’s

market, mirror those of 2000 and 1987, it is a sure bet that history will repeat itself. Investors may expect a year of investment losses within the next five years and a recession possibly as soon as 2019. The economic expansion and stock bull market are in their ninth year and stock valuations are extremely high. Price of Stocks comparing to the Earnings of a stock, called the P/E ratio, also known as the Cyclically Adjusted Price Earnings ratio (CAPE), has topped 31 for the composite of the S&P 500, and the more traditional P/E is over 25 to 1 for stocks, both at their highest levels since 2009. The CAPE ratio is based on average inflation-adjusted earnings from the previous 10 years. Concerns are also around the price-to-sales ratio and the margin debt-to market ratio, both either at or near record highs. In order to stay as high as they are or move even higher, equity valuations require strong earnings growth, which requires strong economic growth, but Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has been relatively slow, (GDP growth for 2017 is forecast between 2% and 2.5%.) Given these expectations for low returns and potential losses, it is time to adjust financial plans and portfolios to minimize potential damage. Here are some recommendations: If one needs a certain amount of money for retirement or any other financial goal, their plans should assume 5% annual earnings rather than say, 7% to 8% or higher. They need to save more and invest more, to make up the difference, and one

may also have to spend less to do that. You cannot invest the same way you have for the last few years. You need incremental returns and risk management. It is advisable to only take risks you expect to be paid for. Lower-risk assets overall, include short-term bonds, more cash and lower-beta equities, guaranteed Equity Indexed Annuities, Tax preferential investments and insured products. One must think of risk not as market volatility, where asset prices can decline, but as the risk of failing to meet your goals. In the comparison of 2000 markets, recovery took 7 to15 years, whereas 1987 was about 2 years. With interest rates near zero for so many years and the slow pace of the Fed’s normalization policy,

the central bank is low on power to stimulate the economy during the next downturn. The Fed won’t be able to “rescue investors” during the next stock market crash, like they did in the years following the 2000 and 2008 crashes. Time to secure your future now.

Tillerson vows to continue diplomatic efforts on N. Korea

By Desert Star Staff Washington will continue its diplomatic efforts to solve the North Korean crisis only “until first bomb drops,” US State Secretary Rex Tillerson told CNN. Tillerson appeared on CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday, where he told host Jake Tapper that President Donald Trump wants to resolve the Korean Peninsula crisis “diplomatically.” “He is not seeking to go to war [with North Korea],” Tillerson stated. “He made it clear… that he will continue diplomatic efforts.” “As I’ve told others these diplomatic efforts will continue until the first bomb drops,” Tillerson said. Earlier in October, Trump tweeted that Tillerson is “wasting his time” trying to negotiate with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. “I told

Rex Tillerson, our wonderful Secretary of State, that he is wasting his time trying to negotiate with Little Rocket Man,” Trump wrote at the time, mockingly referring to the North Korean leader. Trump and Kim have been engaged in a fierce war of words in recent months. Comments from each side have become more and more aggressive. On one occasion, the US president vowed to “totally destroy” North Korea if the US is attacked. Earlier in October, following his meeting with senior US military officials at the White House, Trump mysteriously said: “This is the calm before the storm.” He later confirmed that he was speaking about North Korea. Pyongyang has repeatedly threatened to reduce the US to “ashes and darkness,” and has called

Tillerson says Trump wants diplomacy in N. Korea: “Diplomatic efforts will continue until the first bomb drops” for a nationwide struggle against “war-thirsty” Trump. Washington continues to flex its military muscle with ally South Korea on the Korean

Peninsula, conducting military drills which North Korea condemns. Earlier in October, the USS Ronald Reagan, with nearly 80 aircraft on board,

entered the South China Sea on its way to the shores of South Korea. Drills will likely be held around October 20.

Will Trump Executive Order Undermine Health-Insurance Markets?

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Some California groups are predicting that President Trump’s new executive order on health care could undermine health-insurance markets and lead to higher

premiums for many people. The order, issued Thursday, directs federal agencies to loosen regulations, to allow small businesses to band together and offer low-cost plans across state lines that don’t meet the minimum

coverage standards of the Affordable Care Act. Rachel Linn Gish, communications director for the California nonprofit group Health Access, warned that these plans will be similar to those outlawed by the ACA

as “junk insurance,” that cover very little in the event of a serious injury or illness. “There were a lot of plans out there, that sure, it would be really cheap, but your deductibles would be extremely high, your co-pays would be high; prescription drug costs, almost 100 percent out-of-pocket,” she said. The executive order would also make short-term insurance plans more widely available. The president has said it will provide a low-cost alternative, but opponents have countered that it will mean fewer young, healthy people get their insurance on the state exchanges. Gish said their participation is necessary to stabilize the risk level for insurers and keep premiums down for the majority of people. Gish said the administration, frustrated by its failure to repeal the ACA, is sabotaging it instead - by

By Desert Star Staff LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Arkansas is part of a “Tobacco Nation,” a nickname for the dozen states where smoking rates are the highest in the country. A new report from the Truth Initiative, a group established as part of the 1998 Tobacco Master Settlement, highlights the swath of contiguous states that are bucking the national trend of a substantial decline in smoking. Robin Koval, president and CEO of the Truth Initiative, says such a significant portion of the country shouldn’t be left

behind as national progress is made to curb tobacco use. “We’re talking about 20 percent of the population, 66 million people, 13 million young people,” she says. “That’s the equivalent of the U.K. or France or Thailand if you were thinking about it almost as if it were its own nation.” The report says 22 percent of adults in “Tobacco Nation” smoke compared to 15 percent in the rest of the U.S., lighting up about 500 more cigarettes each year. More than one-in-four Arkansas adults, 27 percent, smoke regularly - one of the

highest rates in the country. Research shows the tobacco epidemic has a disproportionate impact on people at lower income levels. According to the report, “Tobacco Nation” residents aren’t as well-off financially as the rest of the country and generally, suffer poorer health outcomes. Koval adds the smoking rates in these states are some of the highest in the world. “Worse than the Philippines, worse than Indonesia,” she adds. “And in a country with the best resources - financially,

scientifically, health care resources - shame on us, really, for allowing that to happen.” In the past two decades, the report shows the states that make up “Tobacco Nation” have received just over $31 billion in payments from the Tobacco Master Settlement for prevention and control efforts. But the money is often diverted by state legislatures for other priorities. Arkansas received $996 million in settlement funds through 2016, but has only spent $9 million on anti-tobacco programs, according to the Campaign

cutting the enrollment period in half, slashing the budget to promote enrollment, and threatening to withhold cost-sharing payments to the states that help people afford their premiums. “He is doing everything in his power to make sure that Obamacare collapses,” she said. “The President says that Obamacare is collapsing, but in fact, he is the one doing the collapsing by doing executive orders like this.” On Tuesday, Covered California - the ACA exchange in the Golden State - announced it’s adding a 15-percent surcharge on silver-level health plans, to compensate for the anticipated loss of the cost-sharing reduction payments. People affected by the increase, however, are expected to be eligible for extra subsidies to offset the higher premiums.

for Tobacco-Free Kids. It’s no surprise to Koval. “The tobacco industry is a very strong force, still, in our country, spending lots of money on marketing and of course, on lobbyists,” she explains. “And many of these states just don’t have the ability to resist all the efforts of the tobacco industry.” While Arkansas has a statewide ban on smoking in the workplace, it still allows smoking in such public places as bars and restaurants. However, communities are allowed to pass local smoking regulations.

2018 Marketplace Open Enrollment

More than 84,000 Nebraskans signed up for federal Health Insurance Marketplace coverage in 2017. (Pixabay) By Desert Star Staff LINCOLN, Neb. – Open enrollment for the federal Health Insurance Marketplace begins in just three weeks – on Nov. 1 – and Nebraskans looking for health coverage are

encouraged to prepare now. The enrollment period for 2018 plans is just 45 days, down from 90 days last year. There are health care navigators throughout the state, including Ashley

Frevert with Northeast Nebraska Community Action Partnership, who can help people evaluate their options. “It’s a good practice to review your options every year,” she states. “If you

have a marketplace plan, you should also review your application from the previous year and make updates. “And if you are looking to enroll, change your plan, there are options available next year, both on and off the exchange.” Currently, Medica is the only insurer offering federal marketplace plans in the state. As of last year, more than 84,000 Nebraskans were covered by individual and family plans through the federal insurance marketplace. Frevert says those applying for marketplace coverage should have copies ready of their latest tax return, proof of income and current coverage documentation. She adds those who don’t have health insurance, whether through an employer or the marketplace, will still face a fine at tax time. “Current legislation has not

changed,” she points out. “So having insurance is your best option. If you want to avoid that tax penalty, it should be about the same as it was last year.” Frevert adds navigators are a good resource for people who have questions about their coverage, given the overall uncertainty about the future of the health care law. “Be diligent in finding the correct answers that you need to be comfortable with your knowledge about the state of health care in America,” she advises. “If you are looking for answers that are factual and neutral in regards to the Affordable Care Act, please contact a navigator.” Navigators can also help eligible Nebraskans apply for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Open enrollment for federal marketplace plans runs Nov. 1 through Dec. 15.

Advocates Organize to Assist with ACA Enrollment By Desert Star Staff As the Trump administration moves to weaken the Affordable Care Act, advocacy groups in Texas and across the country are taking over the federal government’s role in helping people get health coverage. A coalition known as “Cover Texas Now” is stepping in to publicize the upcoming enrollment period, and train volunteers to help people get health coverage. Elizabeth Colvin, the program director of Foundation Communities, one of the Cover Texas Now groups, says their work has taken on a heightened sense of urgency this year. “Cover Texas Now is important because there is so much misinformation because the federal government is not going to be doing any advertising, the state of Texas is not going to be doing any advertising, so

the burden is falling on local groups to get the word out to everyone,” she explains. The federal government has shortened the enrollment period to just six weeks, from November 1 to December 15, cut an estimated 90 percent of the advertising funding and 40 percent of the budget for enrollment assistance. President Donald Trump campaigned on repealing and replacing the ACA, but Congress has been unable to do so. And, since the program is still in place for 2018, Colvin says a lot of people are confused. “People assume that it doesn’t exist, they think it’s gone away, they think that plans will be unaffordable to them, they think that insurance companies have pulled out and all of that is incorrect, for the most part,” she says. Laura Guerra-Cardus is the deputy director of the

But there’s also a health crisis in Hispanic communities. Of the more than 182,000 Hispanic Americans who live in Iowa, about 4 percent suffer from cardiovascular disease. Kassi Wessing,

communications director for the American Heart Association Iowa chapter, says the data is clear. “Hispanic populations are at a disproportionate high risk for cardiovascular diseases and stroke,” she states. “That includes risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol.” Wessing notes that more than half of Hispanic women are unaware that heart disease is their greatest risk. KMIR News Staff Palm Springs, CA - The sister of a Palm Springs Fire Department firefighter remains missing in Arizona, but more than a dozen members of the city’s fire department were in the Grand Canyon

state Thursday in support of their fellow firefighter in his time of need. Cathryn Gorospe, 44, the sister of PSFD’s Cory Gorospe, went missing last Friday after visiting the Coconino County jail in

Flagstaff at 10:12 p.m. to bail out 27-year-old Charlie Malzahn, who was in custody since August on suspicion of theft and firearm possession. The pair left together and traveled west towards the city of Williams, police believe. “She has not been seen since and we fear harm has come to her,” the Flagstaff Police Department said in a statement. Story: Mother Haunted by Son’s Disappearance Five Months Later Malzahn was arrested Monday morning in Phoenix following a pursuit and crash in Gorospe’s 2010 Toyota Rav 4, which police said was found with blood stains on the center console, interior passenger door, sunroof and interior driver door panel. Police have not alleged to who they might believe the blood belongs. Malzahn is being held for the pursuit and for allegedly assaulting two arresting officers while being booked, including allegations that he put handcuffs around an officer’s head and neck and

attempted to bite officers, according to an arrest report. At present, police have not identified him as a murder suspect in connection with Gorospe’s disappearance. After leaving the jail, police say Malzahn contacted acquaintances on Saturday morning to get drugs and a gun. Tucson police met up with him that afternoon at the Tucson Mall after he allegedly purchased items using Gorospe’s credit card. He allegedly told police he had permission to use the card, but officers seized the credit card and items he purchased. Gorospe was reported missing on Sunday afternoon by her roommate, who said that it was uncharacteristic of Gorospe to leave for a long period of time without making arrangements for someone to care for her dog. However, she did say that Gorospe had plans to eat dinner with Malzahn and travel to Phoenix with him. Gorospe remains missing and Flagstaff police say Malzahn “has not provided investigators

any information” regarding her whereabouts. Police also do not know how long Gorospe and Malzahn were together and are asking the public’s help in determining her whereabouts, including if anyone saw Gorospe and Malzahn together or the SUV, which is white and had Green Bay Packers stickers on it. Investigators have also not yet accounted for some of the damage to her SUV, including two end pieces of the rear bumper that are missing. The Palm Springs Fire Department posted online that “Over 13 of our offduty members” were in Arizona to “help our fellow brother and his family with the search efforts!” The fire department said Arizona firefighter associations have also reached out to help. Anyone who has information regarding Cathryn’s whereabouts was asked to call the Flagstaff Police Department at (928) 774-1414 or Silent Witness at (928) 7746111. Source: KMIR

It’s Harvest Season

Farmers markets will have fresh produce through October, according to the Minnesota Farmers Market Association. (Patric Kuhl/FlickR) By Desert Star Staff After a cold, wet summer and a September that was all over the place, Minnesota farmers are bringing plenty of produce to market in October. This is good news especially for lower-income Minnesotans who are doubling their federal food assistance money with a state program called Market Bucks.

Patti Whitney-Wise, program manager at Hunger Solutions, said nearly a halfmillion Minnesotans - or one in twelve - receive SNAP. “They’re able to use their SNAP money up to $10 at a time, get it doubled to $20 and then purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at the local farmers market,” Whitney-Wise

said; “which is often one of the hardest things for them to purchase because they’re expensive in the stores.” SNAP stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program; formerly known as food stamps. Whitney-Wise said with Market Bucks, lowincome families eat healthier,

while farmers and farmers markets sell more. “They’ve seen farmers who then give these families extra because they know how much it’s appreciated,” she said. “Those families then become attached to those markets and the farmers in those markets so that sense of community is another piece that I think is really wonderful.” In 2015, Minnesota became the first state in the nation to fund SNAP incentives for farmers markets. Support was bipartisan. Bill Boutang is president of the Minnesota Farmers Market Association. He also runs a farmers market in Grand Rapids, where he said tomatoes came in late but great. He said the Market Bucks program gets more popular every year. “So that money stays in the community,” Boutang said. “It’s just a win-win for the farmer. It’s a win-win for folks trying to extend their benefits to feed their family. They’re eating better. It’s fabulous.” About 80 percent of farmers markets in Minnesota participate in the program.

Alaska Crab Season Kicks Off with Harvest Opener By Desert Star Staff JUNEAU, Alaska-Beginning October 15, dedicated Alaska fishermen will once again brave the elements to bring sustainable Alaska crab from the pristine waters of Alaska to the world as the harvest season opens for wild Alaska king and snow crab, and continues for Dungeness crab. Taking place during National Seafood Month (October) and into the winter, now is the time to incorporate the sought-after pure taste of each Alaska crab species into fall meals and holiday celebrations. “Alaska crab is prized for many reasons – its appearance, texture and flavor, but most importantly its sustainability, which is why this harvest season is so important,” said Jeremy Woodrow, Communications Director, Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI). “Behind every Alaska seafood species, including Alaska crab, are devoted fishermen and fisheries managers who work together to regulate each year’s harvest to ensure the fishery is sustainable for future harvests. The total allowable catch this year is 33.6 million pounds combined for all three species of Alaska crab.” Choosing Alaska crab for appetizers, entrées, sides and even breakfast not only means supporting the people in the Alaska seafood industry, but enjoying crab that is known www.desertstarweekly.com

CA Governor Signs Bill Banning Dogs, Cats, and Rabbits in Pet Stores AB 485 stemmed from smaller local initiatives throughout California cities such as Sacramento, San Diego, and West Hollywood. After discovering the state’s spend of $250 million annually to house and euthanize animals

Now banning an outdated business practice of selling pets will positively impact our community, reduce overcrowding in the shelters and provide more adoption options through rescue partners. Making AB 485 the law was the right and smart business decision for California so that our pets, businesses and communities can benefit,” said Andrew Kim, Founder and CEO, Healthy Spot. On January 1, 2019, AB 485 will become effective and enforce the following regulations: • The sale of dogs, cats, or rabbits in pet stores in California is prohibited. • All adoptable pets need

sufficient documentation about their 501 (c)(3) source. • All pet stores must visibly display a sign disclosing the 501 (c)(3) source the animal came from. • A pet store operator who violates these regulations is subject to a civil penalty of $500 per animal and charged with a misdemeanor criminal offense. “In banning the sale of mill-bred animals, California took a bold step forward,” said Judie Mancuso, Founder and CEO, Social Compassion in Legislation. “The deplorable conditions that animals suffer in these high-volume breeding facilities are not a secret and now they have a champion in California.” Source: PRNewswire

ABC-TV’s “The Good Doctor” Is Great

One of my all time favorite TV medical shows was “House,” starring Hugh Laurie in the title role. As Dr. House, Laurie was a grumpy, quirky, no nonsense doctor. While not Mr. Nice Guy, as a physician House was amazing at diagnosing and treating complicated, often highly unusual illnesses. The show had a long, interesting run on Fox but is no longer on the air. If you have missed Dr. House and wished for another medical show with a new twist, check out “The Good Doctor,” on ABC. The show airs on Monday nights, just after “Dancing with the Stars.” This time the ‘good doctor’ is Dr. Sean Murphy, played by another Brit, Freddie Highmore Unlike House, Dr. Murphy is quite young. In fact his new assignment is also his first assignment, a surgical residency. However complications arise when the medical staff at the hospital is told, that while he has excellent potential, Murphy is also autistic. The reaction is almost unanimous, the other surgeons don’t want to work with him, feeling that

no matter how intelligent he might be, he should not be a part of the hospital’s surgical team. He is defended on his merits and qualifications by the head of the hospital who has long been Sean’s mentor and legal guardian after his actual parents were confirmed to be unfit. The first show begins as Sean arrives by plane for his new residency. As everyone is rushing to pick up their luggage a young boy suddenly collapses. A man rushes to help the child, but he is not a doctor. Murphy quickly assess the situation and comes to the child’s assistance and saves his life. The boy is rushed to the hospital for further treatment. This makes the TV news and it is the first time that the hospital staff gets to see Sean Murphy in action. To learn about Murphy’s backstory, flashbacks are inserted showing his life as a young boy. The first look back begins with a pet rabbit he and his younger brother had. The bunny died, and was rudely tossed aside by their father. Later in another flashback

GOT NEWS?

we learn that his younger brother dies in an accident following a bad fall from the top of a train car where they were playing. These personal deaths and tragedies inspired Sean to have just one mission in life--the ability to save lives. Luckily for Sean, his mentor and surrogate father, makes sure he is allowed to stay and prove himself. He even goes so far as to say if Sean doesn’t prove to the staff how good he is as a doctor he will resign his owl position as hospital president. He is that confident in his brilliant young protege.. In the following episode ‘the good doctor’ tries to keep a young girl in the hospital for further testing. However she is released. He continues to worry about the child. On his own he takes a cab to her parents home that night and knocks frantically at their door. He eventually convinces them, against their better judgement, to allow him to check on the little girl. They find her unconscious, having difficulty breathing. Immediately they rush her to the hospital for further treatment which saves her life. In another show, he comes up with an unusual way to save a patient who will die without surgery. He tells

another young doctor willing to listen to him, that they must remove a good kidney in order to remove the giant tumor that lies below. It might be fatal, but without the surgery she will definitely die. The other doctor presents Murphy’s idea to the chief surgeon who finds the solution brilliant. The surgery is successful. The woman lives, but Sean does not receive credit for the solution he alone envisioned. At one point one of the chief resident surgeons uses sarcasm to put Murphy down, a verbal tool Murphy doesn’t understand since he is very literal--a young man of few words. His only purpose as a doctor and a surgeon is not glory or fame. His only desire is “to save a life.” The star of the show is Freddie Highmore, a young English actor who makes his home in London. He has been an actor since childhood appearing in countless films including “Finding Neverland” with Johnny Depp, “Charlie

‘United by the power of a dream’ World Youth Festival opens in Sochi, Russia

By Desert Star Staff The opening ceremony of the World Festival of Youth and Students took place in Sochi, Russia, on Sunday, with President Vladimir Putin saying that the event will gather 30,000 people, making it the most representative in history. Putin began his address at the opening by reminding participants that this year marks the 70th anniversary since the first World Festival of Youth and Students was held in Prague. “Back then, young guys, like you now, were united by the power of a dream and

faith that the youth – their sincerity and kindness – can break the ice of mistrust and help rid the world of injustice, wars and conflicts, ”the Russian president said. “They have proven that barriers are powerless in the face of true friendship, and that the warmth of human communication isn’t dependent on political, religious, cultural and other differences,” he added. The Russian leader also said that the Sochi festival will become the most representative in

history, bringing together “approximately 30,000 participants, guests, and volunteers from over 180 countries of the world from all the continents.” “We’re going to do everything for you to succeed,” Putin promised to the participants, urging them to “strive to change this world and make it a better place.” The grand opening gathered around 10,000 young men and women from all over the world – musicians, athletes, journalists, scientists and leaders of various youth

By Desert Star Staff FRANKFORT, Ky. - “Think Pink” events throughout October are reminding Kentuckians about Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and while pink is a color synonymous with girls, breast cancer doesn’t discriminate by gender. About 2,500 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States this year, along with 250,000 women. Lynn Erdman, chief executive of the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses, encouraged both women and men to be aware of changes in their bodies. While breast self-exams aren’t always

the answer to detecting cancer early, she said, they can help detect changes. “It may be changes in skin coloring, it could be a dimpling, it could be a lump that forms - it could be a number of different changes,” she said. “Then, it’s important to have a follow-up, to see what are the next steps for determining whether you have a problem.” She said both women and men should be screened for breast cancer if they suspect a problem, and mammograms are the standard imaging resource. The risk of breast cancer among women increases with age, and Edrman encouraged them to determine whether

screenings annually or every other year are what’s best. Thanks to advances in treatment and earlier detection, about 95 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer live five years or more. Heredity is a risk factor, although Erdman said about 85 percent of women who are diagnosed don’t have breast cancer in their family history. Either way, she said, it’s important information. “If you have a first-degree relative that has had breast cancer, whether it’s a man or a woman,” she said, “you should know that and share it with your health-care provider, as they are trying to help you determine how often

Jim’s latest efforts are to take his tribute show to a new level by adding symphony orchestrations back into live performances of John Denver music. When John wanted to add a full orchestra to his live shows and recordings, he teamed up with Grammy Award winning arranger, composer and conductor Lee Holdridge. Lee’s symphony arrangements, along with John’s songs, became the trademark sound of many of John’s hits. Jim and Lee have now brought the rebirth of the timeless songs of America’s troubadour back in a full-length live concert of John Denver’s greatest works. John Denver grew into a mega celebrity when the world was looking for hope in the late 60s. and his lyrics in songs like “Take Me Home, Country Roads” gave America a lift and people found pride in the earth’s natural wonders and love for John’s message of caring for our planet and each other. Latinos Lag Behind Others in Earning College Degrees

By Desert Star Staff SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Despite progress in recent years, earning a college degree remains a major challenge for Latinos both in Texas and across the country. A new study out Wednesday from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce finds that only 21 percent of Latinos have a bachelor’s degree compared to 32 percent of African-Americans and 45 percent of whites. And in Texas, only 14 percent of Latinos have an undergraduate degree or higher. Anthony Carnevale, director of the Georgetown Center and the report’s lead author, says the study shows that for Latinos, education is the barrier to a better life, not hard work. “The first generations made their money by working hard in jobs that don’t require much more than high school,” he states. “That leveraged

them into a position where the next generation can move on to college and that really is where the progress is going to have to come. “ Carnevale says that while Latinos are running faster in the education race, they are falling farther behind other ethnic groups. Since 1992, the growth in the number of Latinos who earn college degrees is well below that of whites and African-Americans. And the study shows that few of them – just 15 percent – are enrolled in top tier colleges. Carnevale says one problem is that while Latino high school graduation rates are up, and thousands have test scores that could get them into top colleges in America, many of them simply do not go. “They’ve done their part,” he states. “The issue is whether or not we will have the kinds of supports that are required for lower-income minority families to make that

A new study shows that while more Latinos are earning college degrees, they still fall behind white and African American students in educational attainment. (HillStreet/GettyImages) leap into the college ranks, especially at the B.A. level.” Carnevale says as Latinos get more postsecondary education, their earnings increase and the pay gap begins to close. But they are not yet getting paid the same as others.

“They’re not getting the same earnings for the same degrees as whites do,” he stresses. “That is irrespective of what major Latinos enroll in, what college they enroll in, whether they graduate or not, in the end they always make less than whites. “

Carnevale says despite the statistics, there is cause for optimism. The study finds that with proper support, Latinos can make significant strides in closing the gap in both educational and economic success.

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The number of Latinos in college in California is surging, but their graduation rates are still far behind other groups, according to a new report. Researchers at Georgetown University found that 12 percent of Latinos have a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to 43 percent of whites and 24 percent of African-Americans. Audrey Dow, senior vice president at the Campaign for College Opportunity, a California nonprofit group, says Latinos are now fully represented at community colleges, but not at four-year schools. “Once our students get to college, they are finding

it very difficult to complete,” she states. “And a lot of that difficulty is because of institutional barriers that students will face.” Dow says, for example, that flaws in many college assessment tests mean students are placed in remedial classes when they’re qualified to do college level work, which puts them behind. She also points out that four-year schools have such varied graduation requirements that transfer students have a hard time navigating the system, and often drop out or require up to six years to finish. Anthony Carnevale, a report co-author and director of the Georgetown University

Center for Education and the Workforce, says Latinos who make it through college still aren’t reaping all the benefits. “They’re not getting the same earnings for the same degrees as whites do,” he states. “That is irrespective of what major Latinos enroll in, what college they enroll in, whether they graduate in the end, they always make less than whites.” The report also found that more than a third of Latinos in California have less than a high school education, and 62 percent have a high school degree or less, compared to 21 percent of whites and 32 percent of African-Americans.

Palm Springs Considers Allowing Drinking on Pedicabs By KMIR News Palm Springs, CA - Drinking while touring downtown on a pedicab could be allowed in Palm Springs, as the Palm Springs City Council revisits the issue this fall. The multi-seat bicycle cars do not serve alcohol, but the companies that operate them want to start the BYOB experience. Currently, riders are not allowed to drink while on the pedicabs. “I wouldn’t say it has hurt our business,” says Sunny Cycle co-owner, Jen Banford. “But I would say, it would help our business.” The Palm Springs City Council discussed the issue October 4. “What is the difference between this and somebody sitting in the back of a convertible drinking?” said councilmember J.R. Roberts during discussion. The Palm Springs Police Department has some issues.

Chief Bryan Reyes told the council he is concerned he doesn’t have the staff downtown to help enforce any issues that could arise. He says enforcing pedicabs will cost the city money in the long run. Additionally, police want designated pick-up and drop-off locations and added security cameras. Some local businesses have expressed concerns already. According to the council, they told members they fear loss of revenue or fear riders will bring drinks into their bars, threatening their alcohol licenses. Some told the council they fear people would already be too inebriated once they entered their bars. Traditionally, pedicabs have lead patrons on “bar crawls”, stopping from business to business for optional cocktails and snacks. “Obviously, they’re doing quite well now with these pub crawls,” says Councilmember

Geoff Kors. “So, the question is if we want them to have people bring their own liquor on these pedicabs.” Banford says their main goal is safety. They provide food for their riders during the tours and information for everyone on how to get home safely. “Out of two years of experience, we’ve probably

had to have one person Uber home,” says Banford. “We provide our customers a host, as well as a sober driver, so it’s like a limo, so to speak.” The council is calling on studies from Sacramento, a city that has successfully allowed pedicab companies to have alcohol on board. During the city council meeting October 4, they mentioned comments

from the Sacramento Police Department. The Sacramento Police Department says they have seen no significant incidences come from allowing drinking on board. The council has tabled the measure and will revisit an updated version of the ordinance in early November. Source: KMIR

understand more about who and what is available for licensed child-care. Angie Bowman is the data programs manager for Child Care Aware of Minnesota, she says the new tool is part of the group’s annual survey of providers across the state. “The other piece that’s new with this, this year is, they can also give us their current openings in their child-care business. And so, that information is then shared with parents looking for care on ‘parentaware. org,’” she explains. This year’s survey will be available for providers to fill out through March. Even after that, the update tool will be available on the parentaware.org website. Bowman says Child Care Aware has monthly gift-

card drawings to encourage providers to participate. Angie Bowman helped design and deploy the new tool, which she describes as a “living database.” “They can go on anytime and change anything they need to about their child-care business,” she adds. “They can change their openings. They can change their hours. If they’ve gone on and gotten some different training or learned a new language all of that information can get updated on our tool.” Bowman says she thinks other states may want to adopt a similar approach as they see how well it’s working in Minnesota. The information also helps policymakers get the most current information about the cost and availability of child care in Minnesota.

“I do want to think about how a model that provides for all those other services and provides bereavement services might have a really strong role to play in the future of health care in this country.” The report found that not all Americans benefit from hospice

care equally. Banach said African-Americans in particular continue to be underserved both in terms of the number of care days and the number of patients receiving care. The report is online at nhpco.org.

New Online Tool Gives MN Child-Care Providers, Parents More Insight

begin to make some changes that are going to make people more comfortable,” he said. “Less than that, you’re really doing the best you can do, but you’re not having as much of an impact on an individual’s life and making their life as comfortable as it can be.” Banach said it takes time for the team to work with patients, who may be transitioning from nursing homes, on what their wishes are - and to work with families to put a plan in place for medications, counseling and bereavement services. The report found 46 percent of Medicare recipients received at least one day of hospice care at the time of death, but

nearly three out of four received less than 90 days of care. New strategies are needed to get more people the help they need when dealing with the physical and mental symptoms, and disabilities with which families can struggle at the end of life, Banach said. He noted that the interdisciplinary hospice model, which provides not just medical care but psycho-social care as well, could become even more important as the nation grapples with mass shootings and climate change. “And in this time when we’re dealing with wildfires, and we’re dealing with hurricanes, and we’re dealing with opioid crises,” he said,

Shorter Hospice Terms Point to Missed End-of-Life Opportunities

By Desert Star Staff DENVER - More than 40 percent of Medicare patients received just 14 days or less of hospice care in 2015, according to new data. People facing terminal illnesses frequently turn to hospice care, a combination of medical experts, pain management and emotional and spiritual support tailored to each patient’s needs. Edo Banach, president and chief executive of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, said hospice’s interdisciplinary approach works best not just in the final days but over the last months of a patient’s life. “You really have an ability to www.desertstarweekly.com

MUSIC

BY ROBERT KINSLER

Singer-Songwriters Shine On New Albums

A slew of today’s great singer-songwriters are featured on essential new releases, while an unearthed treasure trove from legendary tunesmith Tim Buckley is available too. Artist: Beck Title: Colors (Capitol Records) You might like if you enjoy: Beck, Prince, David Bowie Tell me more: Since Beck burst on the music scene in 1994 with his breakthrough hit “Loser,” the singer-songwriter/ multi-instrumentalist has somehow blended alternative rock, pop, soul, funk, hip hop, Americana and a myriad of other styles with unearthly brilliance. On his 13th fulllength album “Colors,” the Southern California-based artist continues to chart his own creative path with a master’s touch. This time out, Beck has simultaneously tapped into 1980s synth pop, modern rock and late ‘60s psychedelic rock to carve out yet another expansive masterwork. The songs here are mostly upbeat, buoyant and armed to get concertgoers on their feet with infectious grooves. The swirling title track “Colors,” exuberant “I’m So Free,” propulsive “No Distraction” (with its cool flyby Beatlesque guitar hits and Beck’s falsetto vocals) and dreamy “Fix Me” are among this writer’s faves. This is an album that reveals its sonic secrets and wonders more fully with each subsequent listen. Information: beck.com.

Artist: Tim Buckley Title: Venice Mating Call (Manifesto Records) You might like if you enjoy: Tim Buckley, Alex Chilton, Beck Tell me more: Before he died at the age of 28 in June 1975, singer-songwriter Tim Buckley created a stellar and genre-defying body of original songs drawing from the blues, folk, funk, soul and other styles. Now Manifesto Records has released the outstanding two-disc “Venice Mating Call” showcasing live tracks recorded at the legendary Troubadour in Hollywood in September 1969. The haunting “Chase the Blues Away,” free form jazz-flavored “Venice Mating Call,” psychedelic rock-mining “Gypsy Woman” flamencotinged “Driftin’,” Ten Years Afterpatterned “(I Wanna) Testify” and luxurious “Anonymous Proposition” are among the many treasures here. Buckley’s dynamic and distinctive vocals are showcased across the live collection and this set will thrill long-time fans or those just discovering this vital artist. Information: manifesto.com. Artist: Whitney Rose Title: Rule 62 (Six Shooter/Thirty Tigers) You might like if you enjoy: Kacey Musgraves, Brenda Lee, Patsy Cline Tell me more: With a sound and beautiful soprano that recalls some of the stellar country music singers of the

‘50s and ‘60s, Nashvillebased songstress Whitney Rose shines on the decidedly contemporary “Rule 62.” Produced by Raul Malo (lead singer of the Mavericks), there is plenty of real world depth and captivating musical heft to lift each and every one of the 11 songs on the disc. The driving and defiant “Arizona” and Time to Cry,” tender “You Never Cross My Mind” (which includes some sublime harmonies from Malo) and poetic “Wake Me in Wyoming” showcase Rose’s superb talents as singer and songwriter. Recorded on Jan. 20, 2017 – the same day of the most recent Presidential Inaugural – “Can’t Stop Shakin’ “ has a nervous and funky vibe suited to the uncertainty of the times; the Hammond B3 organ, electric guitar riffs and saxophone blasts immerse Rose’s evocative vocals as part of the terrific and disquieting arrangement. An all-star group of musicians including bassist Jay Weaver (Dolly Parton, Tanya Tucker), guitarist Kenny Vaughn (Marty Stuart, Lucinda Williams), drummer Paul Deakin (The Mavericks), pianist Jen Gunderman (Sheryl Crow), fiddler Aaron Till (Asleep at the Wheel) and steel guitar player Chris Scruggs (Marty Stuart) enhance the album as well. Information: SixShooterRecords.com. Artist: Jackie Greene Title: The Modern Lives – Vol 1 (Blue Rose Music) You might like if you enjoy:

Beck’s “Sea Change,” The Jayhawks, Mark Knopfler Tell me more: One of Americana music’s greatest modern-day voices, Jackie Greene has played lead guitar with the Black Crowes, played a seminal role in the roots-minded supergroup Trigger Hippy and carved out an established solo career ripe with concert dates and winning album releases. Now the long-time Northern California artist newly moved to New York City is back with another must-hear release; “The Modern Lives – Vol 1” packs a dashing wallop with a heady and diverse mix of songs across its six-song run. The wry “Modern Lives” bristles with an infectious and satirical look at life in the 21st century. “The Back of My Mind” is a tender ballad adorned with layers of piano, acoustic and electric guitar, mandolin and lovely vocal harmonies. The country blues of a cover of Willie Dixon’s “Good Advice” recalls the spirit of Mississippi blues with a modern edge. Listening to this impressive EP, it’s hard to believe it was reportedly recorded in Greene’s Brooklyn basement. Information: JackieGreene.com. Artist: Ricky Byrd Title: Clean Getaway (Recovery Troubadour Records) You might like if you enjoy: Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jackie Greene, Jonny Lang Tell me more: With so many legendary musicians ranging

from Jimi Hendrix and Gram Parsons to Keith Moon and John Entwistle having died as a direct result of drug and/or alcohol abuse it is great to hear an artist release a full-length album dedicated to breaking free of addiction. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame singer-guitarist Ricky Byrd (of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts fame) has issued “Clean Getaway,” a 12song disc delving fully into the shades, layers and nuances of addition and recovery. On the Chicago blues original “Clean Getaway,” Byrd sings powerfully of his break from substance abuse and coming clean (he closes the track singing: “When trouble comes knocking / you know I ain’t going to come answer that door”). The music here showcases Byrd’s far-flung skills as singer and lead guitarist; for example the rollicking “I Prefer Wakin’ Up... To Comin’ To” would be at home on one of Chuck Berry’s early LPs; “Lighthouse” is a beautiful soul song. The rowdy “Paranoid” has a ‘70s rock feel and finds Byrd singing of the downfalls of being addicted. This is an album that rocks, but serves as an honest look at a topic the rock community hasn’t always been one to assess in song. A portion of the sales from “Clean Getaway” go to the Clean Getaway non-profit 501(c)(3) to bring awareness, education, prevention and addiction resources to those suffering from drug and alcohol addiction. Thousands Seek Shelter from Deadly Wildfires

By Desert Star Staff WASHINGTON-- The American Red Cross is on the ground in California, working with officials and disaster partners to help people impacted by the nearly two dozen devastating wildfires burning across the region in what is now the deadliest week of fires in the state’s history. Thousands of firefighters are battling the blazes and continued dry, windy conditions are making it difficult to contain the fires. According to officials, more than 100,000 people are under mandatory evacuation orders, and as many as 33,000 homes are threatened. Preliminary reports indicate 3,500 structures, including 1,300 homes, have already been destroyed by out-of-control fires. It has been reported that hundreds are injured, and some 500 are reported missing. RED CROSS RESPONSE Red Cross disaster workers are supporting evacuation centers where people can find safe refuge from the fires, a hot meal, health services, emotional support and help reconnecting with loved ones. Overnight, nearly 5,000 people sought refuge from wildfires in

58 Red Cross and community shelters across California. With the help of partners, the Red Cross has served more than 20,000 meals and snacks, and provided more than 1,100 mental health and health services to support and care for those affected. More than 430 Red Cross disaster workers are helping now, with an additional 190 on the way. Thousands of additional cots, blankets and relief items have been mobilized in the event that additional shelters are needed. If someone needs to find a shelter or other help, they should follow their local media or go to redcross.org and check the shelter map. People can also find a shelter by downloading the free Red Cross Emergency App. The Emergency App also puts wildfire safety tips at your fingertips. The app is available in app stores by searching for the American Red Cross or going to redcross.org/apps. Anyone who plans to stay in a Red Cross shelter should bring prescription medications, extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies, other comfort items and important documents. Don’t forget to bring any

special items for children, such as diapers, formula and toys, or for family members who have unique needs. HELPING LOVED ONES REUNITE Hundreds of residents of the impacted neighborhoods have not yet been located and the Red Cross Safe and Well website is playing a role in reuniting loved ones. More than 4,300 people affected by the wildfires have already registered on the site. Safe and Well is a free public reunification tool that allows individuals and organizations to register and post messages to indicate that they are safe, or to search for loved ones. The site is always available and open to the public and available in Spanish. Registrations and searches can be done directly on the website. Registrations can also be completed by texting SAFE to 78876. Messages exist in both Spanish and English. Visit the Safe and Well at http:// www.redcross.org/safeandwell to reconnect with loved ones. People can also use the Red Cross Emergency App’s “I’m Safe” button to post a message to their social accounts, letting friends and family know they

Policies Only Serve Wealthiest

Multiple organizations, including AFT Washington, are protesting U.S. Education Secretary Betsy Devos’s visit to Bellevue today. (Gage Skidmore/Flickr) By Desert Star Staff BELLEVUE, Wash. – Protestors plan to greet Education Secretary Betsy DeVos in Bellevue today, where she is scheduled to speak at an annual fundraiser for the Washington Policy Center, a free-market think tank. The center says it invited DeVos to speak because she’s one of the nation’s top policy leaders and because of her support for charter schools and the so-called “school choice” movement. But Carl Livingston, a political science professor at Seattle Central College who will be speaking to protestors, says that policy

tips the scales toward the country’s wealthiest families. “It disserves most of the students by setting up charter schools and the privatization of education generally, which will do a good job of serving those with more money and

income and means, but not do a good job of serving the average student,” he says. Multiple groups are coming together to protest the DeVos visit starting at 5 P.M., including the American Federation of Teachers of Washington.

AFT points out that DeVos has opposed efforts to overhaul student-loan servicing, scaled back investigations in her department’s Civil Rights Office, and supports cuts to federal student loans in the Trump administration’s budget. Her critics say all those moves hurt higher education. Livingston also has concerns about DeVos’s pick for the National Assessment Governing Board, a nonpartisan group that administers a national assessment of the country’s education system. He says this is yet another instance of the secretary bringing in business people to oversee policies in education. “Some of them are steeped in experience in business, but not really in education,” he adds. “They’re really principled business people that are promoting a conservative agenda.” Livingston adds that the protests won’t only be about Devos’s visit. He says people also are coming together to express concern that equal opportunity for students of all backgrounds is under attack.

G.B. Shaw is ‘Alive and Well’ and still very relevant By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film critic George Bernard Shaw, was an irascible, prickly, Irish playwright, author, essayist, and critic of everything that English Victorian society held dear. He relished poking his fingers into their hypocritical eyes when it came to politics and the plight of English and Irish women held hostage by centuries of patriarchy; and he did it with his brilliant plays, novels, and essays. One could even make a case for Shaw being the first ‘male feminist’ and recognized literary giant to champion the emerging women’s movement of the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries in the United Kingdom and America. Pasadena’s A Noise Within theatre company, is staging a provocative and spirited comedy production of Shaw’s “Mrs. Warren’s Profession”, a witty play about the ‘world’s oldest profession’, or is it about something else that is masquerading for a more insidious subject matter discussion: the misogyny of men in a patriarchal society who harbor the fear of being exposed for their shortcomings. A fact that women have known since this planet first exploded, along with the Divine Right of Kings rule of law, and other “fake news”. The play, crisply directed by Michael Michetti, was written in 1893, but didn’t see a stage presentation until some nine years later, courtesy of the puritan nature of Victorian society that was ‘offended’ by the clarity and prescience of Shaw’s writing. When the play was first staged in New York City in 1905, the entire cast was arrested for public indecency. Shades of standup comedian Lenny Bruce and the Chicago police in 1962 when he was arrested during a performance on obscenities charges. Shaw, however, fared much better than Bruce. The story, set in Victorian England centers on the problematic relationship between Mrs. Kitty Warren (Judith Scott) and her daughter Vivie (Erika Soto), a recent Cambridge University Honors graduate. Vivie hasn’t seen her mother in years. She’s a victim of the English PublicSchool system where children of wealthy parents are sent off to boarding schools to be raised by teachers and then by academics in the Universities. There are echoes in “Mrs. Warren’s Profession”, of many culture-based mother-daughter film stories like “Mildred Pierce”,” Now Voyager”, “Separate Tables”, and others that deal with conflicts and secrets not shared by either the mother or the daughter. “Mrs. Warren’s Profession” is one of the earliest of these plotlines. Kitty Warren is a former prostitute made wealthy by www.desertstarweekly.com

becoming a Madame and a coowner - with Sir George Crofts (Jeremy Rabb)- of a string of upper-class brothels located in the great cities of Europe. Vivie, has been the beneficiary of Kitty’s business success. Vivie is pragmatic, intelligent, independent, and dedicated to being her own person. Not an easy road to travel, for a young single woman in turn of the century England. And, she has no knowledge of how Kitty obtained her wealth. In Act I, she is too busy explaining to her mother how she intends to live her life, becoming an independent woman, who views Kitty as unfeeling, and a bit rough-around-the edges, compared to her upper-class friends at Cambridge. In the meantime, Vivie has caught the eye of Frank Gardner (Adam Faison), son of the local Vicar (Martin Kildare). Frank is an entitlement-oriented, boring young man in search of a rich woman as his meal ticket through life. He thinks Vivie is that worthy candidate. Kitty’s acquaintance, Mr. Praed (Peter James Smith), is a peacemaker; always around to soothe the ruffled feathers of Kitty when it comes to her relationship with Vivie. Act I belongs to Vivie and Shaw concerning life in Victorian England and constantly reminds one of the plight of women, either as a member of the working poor, or as a middle-class married woman. In Act II, the fireworks begin. In frustration, Vivie confronts her mother with why isn’t there a father in her life, why are there no cousins or relatives, just her mother’s male friends? These questions, and others, however, are addressed in what some critics and audiences describe as a no-holds barred, verbal battle Royale between Kitty and Vivie, that takes place when the true nature of Kitty’s hidden profession is revealed, and Vivie learns that her high-end education has been funded by it. What follows is a bittersweet resolution, but No Spoiler alerts here. Let’s just say that it’s a treat to watch these two talented women perform their magic. The actors in this impressive ensemble production render finely judged performances and are always in their moments. That being said, the power of Shaw’s dramedy, none-the-less, is embodied in the characters of Kitty and Vivie. Both Ms. Scott and Ms. Soto deliver potent memorable performances. One can easily relate to the emotions of both women when they make their life altering choices. Victorian men, however, were rarely forced by society to wrestle with difficult choices like women. The pity is most of the things Shaw railed against over a 100 years ago, are sadly, still issues to this day. American politics is still

ANW Resident Artist Erika Soto as Vivie Warren, Adam Faison as Frank Gardner. Photo by Craig Schwartz. mired in a toxic swamp of inequality and special interests. The technical credits at A Noise Within are always firstrate. The team led by director Michetti features a space set design which looks good from the audience’s POV, but causes some upstage right and left, audial blind spots, when actors are speaking with their backs to the audience (it should be an easy fix). The lighting design by Jaymi Lee Smith, opts for a general overall illumination

level and employs spots when called for the in the more dramatic moments in the play. The costumes designed by Sara Ryung Clement are spot-on for the ladies, but, having lived in England for three years, I always wore a jacket or windbreaker whenever I went outside. Frank, looked half-naked to me when he went outside to hunt or shoot in a shirt, cap, and trousers. I kept looking at his knees to see if they were shaking from

the bone-chilling air. Melanie Chen Cole’s sound design works for everyone. She’s a welcome addition who did yeoman duty as North Coast Repertory Company’s resident sound designer in Solana Beach for several years. “Mrs. Warren’s Profession” is another splendid production from A Noise Within theatre. The comedy/drama performs in repertory through November 18, 2017. It’s a winner.
