‘Disney World Resort’ Disney Announces Plans to Build Nature-Inspired Mixed-Use Resort on Bay Lake By Desert Star Staff LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., A new nature-inspired, mixeduse Disney resort will welcome families in 2022 along the picturesque shoreline of Bay Lake. Located between Disney’s Wilderness Lodge and Disney’s Fort Wilderness

Resort & Campground, this resort project joins three others underway at Walt Disney World Resort, bringing a total of more than 1,700 new hotel rooms and proposed Disney Vacation Club villas online over the next four years.

The deluxe resort, which will be themed to complement its natural surroundings, will include more than 900 hotel rooms and proposed Disney Vacation Club villas spread across a variety of unique accommodation types. “Walt Disney World is

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Four types of California’s native bumblebees could be wiped out if nothing is done, according to conservation groups that this week petitioned the state to put the bees on the state endangered species list. Experts say bees are in big trouble because habitat has been lost to housing and agriculture. Kim Delfino, California program director of the group Defenders of Wildlife, adds that many bees are vulnerable to diseases carried by nonnative species brought in for pollination, and to a class of pesticides called neonicotinoids. “The thing that’s really

tipped them over the edge is the widespread use of certain pesticides,” she states. “You know, when a pesticide is applied, it takes everything out including the beneficial insects like native pollinators like these bees.” Delfino notes that the Crotch bumblebee has declined by 98 percent from its historic numbers. The western bumblebee declined by 84 percent, the Suckley cuckoo bumblebee is down by more than half and the Franklin’s bumblebee hasn’t been seen since 2006. Opponents of the listing say the pesticides are important to modern agriculture. Delfino praises a bill

passed by the State Legislature to make money available to help landowners put in bee-friendly plants, but she says voluntary measures like that just aren’t enough. “It would be looking more closely at activities like pesticide application, on how they’re impacting pollinators,” she states. “It would be promoting greater restoration efforts in native bee habitat.” The Fish and Game Commission has 90 days to decide if there is enough scientific evidence to warrant further consideration. Then the commission will start a year-long scientific review to decide if listing is warranted.

Consumer Groups Have Cautious Praise for Feds’ Proposal By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. Consumer groups are praising a proposal by the Trump administration to require drug companies to put prices in many of their television advertisements, but some worry it’s only a pre-election perk designed to attract voters - one that could be dropped after the midterms. The rule, announced by federal health regulators, would apply to drugs offered through Medicare or Medicaid that cost more than $35 per month, or for a course of treatment. If finalized, said Frederick Isasi, executive director of the nonprofit Families USA, the rule could show people the real cost of some wellknown prescription drugs. “This is an important step forward, because it gives consumers a sense of the magnitude of the drug,” he said. “Is this a

drug that is going to cost them $30 a month, $300 a month, $3,000 a month, $30,000 or more? Helping the American public understand the exorbitant prices being charged by drug companies.” The plan is opposed by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, a trade group that proposed instead to put up a website in spring that discloses drug list prices and co-payments. Isasi said he’d like to see the administration actually negotiate lower prices for consumers rather than hoping transparency will shame drug makers into charging less. He added that high drug prices affect everyone - even those who don’t take any medications. “For people who may not use pharmaceuticals,” he said, “what they don’t realize is, if there’s a $3,000-a-month

By some estimates, Americans spent $450 billion on prescription drugs in 2016. (Dodgerton Skillhause/Morguefile) drug that’s being used by patients within their insurance plan, then the cost of that drug gets ‘baked into’ everyone’s premiums.” According to the

health-care research group Quintiles IMS Institute, the United States spent $450 billion on prescription drugs in 2016 before rebates. If the administration finalizes

the rule, pharmaceutical trade groups say they won’t rule out litigation. The proposal is online at federalregister.gov.

Medicare: It’s Time to Select a Plan for 2019

An estimated 1.3 million people in Indiana are eligible for Medicare. (Twenty20.com) By Desert Star Staff INDIANAPOLIS — Hoosiers ages 65-plus have about seven weeks to select a Medicare health insurance plan. Open enrollment for

the federal health insurance program begins today and runs through December 7. CEO of Medicare and Retirement for United Healthcare in Indiana Charlotte

MacBeth said premiums and plan coverage can change from year to year, so she recommends even those who were happy with their 2018 Medicare coverage

review their choices. She said one important element to understand is the maximum out-of-pocket expenses. “One of the things that Medicare Advantage enables a person to do is to provide protection around the maximum out-of-pocket expenditures that you have in a year’s period. And that will vary from plan to plan,” MacBeth said. “But in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you have a cap on your expenditures.” Other elements to consider when choosing a plan are whether it includes your current doctor or medical provider, if you need vision or hearing services, and if you want additional perks such as fitness memberships or discounts on hearing aids. There are about 1.3 million people in Indiana who are eligible for Medicare, and nearly 1-in-4 was enrolled in a Medicare

Tips for Turning History into Your Story

By Desert Star Staff If you have ever thought about exploring your family history, now can be the perfect time as October is National Family History Month. To get started, these four simple tips can help you unlock new understanding and make meaningful connections. You can also consider sharing these tips with loved ones so they can join in on the fun, too. Call Your Family: In almost every family there is someone who knows all about the familial tree and history.

You might be unsure of the exact date your grandparents were married, but someone else may know. Building knowledge of your family history can be an excuse to call your mom, your grandma or even your great aunt. They likely have stories and photos you don’t have and would likely be willing to share them.

Start a Family Tree: Starting a family tree can be the next step to learning about your family history. Building out your tree online can be simple with a service like Ancestry,

which has been turning history into your story by transforming names into family and distant places into home for more than three decades. With more than 20 billion records and 3 million family history subscribers, the service provides all the information and tools you need in one place to make discovery fun and easy. Enter what you know about yourself, your parents, your brothers and sisters then add your grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. If you aren’t sure about dates and places, make an educated guess then October 19, 2018

Message Cousins: As you continue to explore your family tree, you may find other relatives have already researched pieces and parts of your family tree. Maybe a fourth cousin has your common great-grandparents in their tree with photos and stories about their lives. Find out what other information they might know or share what you know about your branch of the family tree. Take a DNA Test: DNA

Advantage plan in 2018. When selecting a Medicare plan, MacBeth said changes that are unique to your own health and lifestyle are most important to consider. “If you have a change in income year over year or a change in health-care needs year over year, those are the ones that will dictate how you might want to look at a plan,” she said; “not necessarily changes in Medicare, because those are pretty stable from year to year.” She also noted those who need help with the cost of medication should select either a Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan with prescription coverage, since original Medicare doesn’t cover those costs. More information on Medicare plans is available online at medicare. gov and at UHC.com.

•••••••••••••• testing has revolutionized the way people discover family history. With a service like AncestryDNA, you become part of a genetic network that includes more than 10 million people. In addition to providing ethnicity estimates, the service also compares your DNA to the people in the network and matches you to anyone sharing enough DNA with you to point to a recent common ancestor within the last 8-10 generations. To make those connections even easier to find, attach that family tree you built to your DNA results, and find more information at Ancestry.com. Family Features www.desertstarweekly.com

‘Eighth Grade’ Now On DVD

No matter what your age is now, at one point in your life you were, or will be, an adolescent going through the angst and pain of being a teenager. It’s a time when you want to belong, be liked and fit in with the other kids. A time when you yearn for the self-confidence to feel good about yourself. In the sweetly empathetic film “Eighth Grade,” now available on Blu-ray and DVD, the 27-year-old actor,

musician and comedian Bo Burnham adds writer/director to his creative resume. And like the young teenager Kayla Day, played to perfection by Elsie Fisher in the film, he was a teenaged YouTube star. However, Kayla doesn’t earn millions of clicks like Bo. Her audience is very modest, probably only a few. In her on-screen presentation, she offers advice. “Be self-confident?” she says feigning the self-

on his own since his wife’s departure long ago. He continually tries to reassure Kayla, telling her she’s entirely “cool.” But she, in turn, tunes him out, focussing on her phone or by just walking away. To his credit, he knows this is a teen thing--and never gives up. In his quiet way, he projects a deep love and caring for his daughter, knowing one day he will be appreciated. Ironically Kayla is invited to a birthday pool party thrown by the mother of one of the snooty girls who snubbed her earlier. The mom wants all of her daughter’s classmates to attend. Reluctantly, at her father’s urging, Kayla goes to the party. Again she is like an unseen ghost-- ignored. Unnoticed, she jumps in the water and swims across the pool. There she encounters another loner, Gabe (Jake Ryan), in snorkeling gear. In between diving spurts, he engages her in conversation. He is also an outsider, and it is obvious, perhaps not to Kayla, that he likes her. It is also apparent that the writer/director understands

confidence she lacks. An excellent example of her insecurity is seen early in the film when she tries to ingratiate herself with two favorite classmates. In the process she is quietly rebuffed as they stare at their smartphones, hoping she will go away. The only one who recognizes and appreciates all of Kayla’s unique qualities is her father Mark (Josh Hamilton). He is raising her

teenagers. Throughout “Eighth Grade” we experience the trials and temptations faced by the young today. But the film is never overbearing in showing what it’s like to be young in America in the 21st century. There is some mild rude language sprinkled throughout, earning the film an R rating which is unfortunate since “Eighth Grade” is so tuned in to the young teens of today. They would totally “get it.” “Eighth Grade” is well regarded by critics and audiences alike, earning a 99 percent approval rating on “Rotten Tomatoes.” And while it explores the ups and downs of being a teen today, it’s never a downer. It’s a tender look at a difficult time--the teen years. And we all pass through it at one point in our lives. The Blu-ray and DVD feature a chance to hear from the writer/director and the stars of the film which will give the viewer further insight. “Eighth Grade”-- Rated R for language and some sexual material has a running time of 1 hour 34 minutes.

Masters Showcased on Outstanding Collections

Whether you are a fan of classic or modern rock, singer-songwriter excellence, power pop or even popular songs of the 18th and 19th centuries, there are new releases that excite. Artist: Elvis Costello & The Imposters Title: Look Now (Concord Records) You might like if you enjoy: Elvis Costello’s “Imperial Bedroom,” Joe Jackson, Burt Bacharach Tell me more: Who knew Elvis Costello & The Imposters would be back and release one of the best albums of 2018? The proof comes via the glorious “Look Now,” Costello’s first new album in five years (“Wise Up Ghost,” a collaboration with the Roots, was released in September 2013). “Look Now” most closely recalls Costello’s 1982 Geoff Emerick-produced gem “Imperial Bedroom” and his masterful baroque pop collaboration with Burt Bacharach, 1998’s “Painted from Memory.” Indeed, Bacharach has co-written and added his piano talents on several tracks on “Look Now,” including the stirring title track and the poignant “Photographs Can Lie” (the latter featuring some of Costello’s most affecting vocals in memory); elsewhere there are echoes of Memphis soul (the rousing “Burnt Sugar is So Bitter,” a song he co-wrote with Carole King back in the ‘90s), Springsteen “Burn to Run”-era rock (“Unwanted Number”) and even Philadelphia soul (“Suspect My Tears”). “Look Now” is co-produced by Costello and five-time Grammy winner Sebastian Krys. The stellar collection also proves to be an outstanding celebration of The Imposters (the aforementioned Nieve, drummer Pete Thomas and bassist Davey Faragher). Information: ElvisCostello.com.

latest full-length album “The Stars, The Oceans & The Moon” English rockers Echo & the Bunnymen revisit and reinterpret more than a dozen of the band’s most beloved songs. “The Stars, The Oceans & The Moon” comes as the band celebrates its 40th anniversary. Formed in Liverpool, England in 1978, the group is fronted by founding members Ian McCulloch (vocals, rhythm guitar) and Will Sergeant (lead guitar), Among the outstanding tracks featured on the set are the scintillating “Bring On the Dancing Horses,” buoyant “Bedbugs & Ballyhoo,” propulsive “The Cutter” and a haunting decidedly-sparse take on “The Killing Moon.” While the versions on the new disc don’t supplant the original versions, they do bring out fresh elements that make for essential listening for fans of the groundbreaking British band. New tracks that make their debut include the mystical rocker “The Somnambulist” and reflective “How Far?” Information: bunnymen.com.

Artist: Tom Petty Title: An American Treasure (Reprise Records) You might like if you enjoy: Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch Tell me more: Filled with previously-unreleased studio songs, live cuts and spellbinding alternate takes of beloved favorites taken from throughout his astounding career, the aptly-titled “An American Treasure’ captures the singular sound that Tom Petty carved out over fortyplus years. The four-disc set is broken down by decade with cuts from the 1970s, ‘80s, ‘90s and 2000s featured. Things kick off with the Byrds-flavored “Surrender,” recorded by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers in 1976. Listening to the track is to be instantly transported back to the exuberance of the ensemble’s early days. Live performances of “Listen To Her Heart” (from April 1977), Artist: Echo & the Bunnymen and “Anything That’s Rock ‘n’ Title: The Stars, The Oceans Roll and “Breakdown” (from & The Moon (BMG) a November 1977 set) also You might like if you capture that spirit. Artist: Ken Sharp Title: Beauty in the Backseat You might like if you enjoy: Matthew Sweet, Jeremy, Shoes Tell me more: Ken Sharp’s fifth LP “Beauty in the Backseat” mixes up things in all the right ways, unabashed in terms of being forcefully melodic while fused with a heavy dose of Philly soul. Leadoff track “Rock Show” is a splendid mix of soulful gospels, power pop tunefulness, fuzzy guitar textures and adorned with a great solo from KISS guitarist Ace Frehley. The driving melodic rocker “Mona Lisa Smile” is pure ear candy. Other sonic delights include the intoxicating “No One Seems to Stay Together Anymore,” lovely “Closer” and racing “24 Hours a Day.” Sharp is joined by another one of his heroes when Rock and Roll Hall of Famer John Oates guests on “Philly Kind of Night.” Sharp also pays tribute to several other musical heroes courtesy of the ambitious baroque pop “The Day That David Bowie” died and joyful “I Wanna Be David Cassidy.” Information: Ken-Sharp.com.
