Family Fun at the McCallum
Story and Photos by Pat Krause The McCallum Theatre held its 4th annual Family Fun Day Celebration on Sunday, October 18th with a family show and fun things for the little ones. Food and fun started at noon for amusing things geared for the little ones with face paintings, foods and balloon figures. Kids walked around with painted faces and arms. Parents watched as their children enjoyed this special treat. Families took photos in front of a McCallum Theatre backdrop; there were other outside activities that were held in the front of the Theatre. There were special prizes and a silent auction, something for everyone, young and old. There was a booth where children, and their parents painted pictures and glued on sparkly stuff. There were large boards in the Lobby that displayed these works of art by the children. Each child got to watch his or her painting being pinned to the board, and some had their photo taken with the painting on that board which was exciting for the children. Children were seen walking around with balloons as characters or weapons like swords.
The entertainment started on the stage at 2:30 after a raffle where one lucky family got $1,000 dollars. The entertainment was geared toward children and parents who were young at heart. Everyone loves animals and animal tricks. The Olate Dogs, Winners of Americas Got Talent 2012, dazzled the kids with their dogs that do amazing tricks. The San Diego Zoo brought exotic animals to show, and Dr. Zoolittle emceed the event in a feathery headdress. Another America’s Got talent Alumni, Kevin Johnson, thrilled the audience with his ability as a ventriloquist. The event will benefit the McCallum Theatre Institute, the Arts Education program that provides arts training to over 40,000 students and educators each year. They serve 70 % of the Coachella Valley’s Classrooms. The Theatre holds special performances for the children of the Desert and even bus the children from the schools for these events. The Community Outreach programs reach all Coachella Valley children to instill the love of the Arts in every child.

Program-Food Samaritans. The need is critical to be able to help local residents with food and assistance to survive. There is a waiting list, and this event was asking people to become Angels to support AAP. Executive Director of AAP spoke to the crowd of several hundred people. Anton said this is one of the most important events in raising money for the programs that are provided by AAP. The special guest and Headliner were none other than the beautiful and talented Mary Wilson of the Supremes. Local radio personality Bill Finegold October 21, 2015
introduced her to the crowd to a rousing applause. Finegold said his wish was to be one of the Supremes. Wilson came on Stage and announced she would be doing some of the most famous songs of the Supremes. Occasionally she invited the audience to sing a-long with her and asked them to come up and dance. She asked a few to come up and dance to her song “STOP in the Name of Love” and several came on the dance floor to dance to the tune. Wilson mesmerized the guests with her fabulous vocals and brought many memories of the wonderful Supremes. There was no admission charged for this event, but
guests were asked to give to this worthwhile charity. This is AAPs, Annual Giving Program, to continue this very needed charity. It’s hard to turn down people living with HIV-AIDS and other serious illnesses in need of food and assistance because of a lack of funds. AAP has to survive with donations from Private donations, business and community support, foundation grants and special events such as this Jeanette Rockefeller Angel Program kickoff party. AAP gets no Federal or state funding but has still helped more than 1,500 clients. Health Savings Accounts offer benefits to fund Long Term Care
By Janice Gough This is the time of the year in which you can switch to a different model of the Obamacare plans. From a bare bones plan: the Bonze model, to

one of the plans offering more comprehensive coverage: Silver, Gold or Platinum models, you can elect a different plan for the coming year. One plan that is sometimes not understood is the Health care Savings accounts (HAS), which go hand-in-hand with highdeductible health plans. These are “triple tax-free”—what you put in is sheltered from income tax, it grows tax-deferred, and the money can be used, taxfree, for medical expenses. For healthy people with a neat row of financial ducks and plenty of cash, health savings accounts, or HSAs, could be a retirement gift from the tax gods. With Group HSAs, employers sometimes seed the accounts with a few hundred dollars, pre-tax, and your contributions are tax-deductible. You can contribute up to $3,350 for an
individual policy and $6,650 for a family plan. And unlike flexiblespending programs, they are not “use it or lose it,” so your money accumulates. There are many options available for your investment choices, which it is wise to study these options before opening an account. HSAs will likely become a greater part of employee’s lives. The minimum annual deductible for the health plan you choose is $1,300 for individuals and $2,600 for family coverage. It’s no secret that the body begins to break down in old age, leading to an abundance of medical expenses. A study by Fidelity Investments put the average dollar amount needed for this purpose for a couple who retired in 2014 at a jaw-dropping $220,000 per couple. The Cost of Long Term Care insurance is expensive. The younger you
are and healthier, the cheaper the premiums, so by using the benefits of tax deductibility, HSAs are an excellent way incorporate this protection and to pay these LTC premiums. Generally, savings in your HSA may pay for deductibles, co-insurance and co-pays. Keep in mind, if you are 55 and older you can contribute an additional $1,000 to your HSA. This is a “catch-up” contribution. You can do this each year that you are eligible for an HSA. Once you enroll in Medicare you are no longer permitted to make these contributions. The additional contribution to your HSA, can enable the LTC premiums to be paid, for a longer period of time. After age 65 or Medicare eligibility, withdrawals for nonmedical expenses are not subject to the 20% penalty, though they are subject to
income taxes, just as they would be from a traditional IRA. LTC premiums are considered medical and payments to these plans are not subject to tax after age 65. Considering the triple tax advantages, the cost of purchasing Long Term Care is greatly reduced. In turn providing protection of LTC can save you from having to deplete retirement income to pay for Assisted Living and Nursing Home Care.
that updating every 5-8 years is reasonable or necessary. While, many associations find their initial developersupplied documents as illfitting to their needs, once an association membership approves a replacement set of documents, it is hard to imagine that 5-8 years later they would need updating in most cases. Civil Code 5550, which requires the board to obtain and review a reserve study, discusses “major components” of the property, but I do not think legal documents are “major components.” An Association could plan on a rewrite project and then budget to accumulate a certain portion of that project each year - certainly if the HOA is planning to pursue the project, its cost is now an “anticipated expense” and the association may budget for a portion of that expense in one year, and the remainder in the next years. This should satisfy Civil Code 5600(b), which requires assessments to be
collected for actual anticipated costs. Alternatively, the HOA could borrow from the reserve account under Civil Code 5515, so long as it is restored to the account within one year. Hope this helps, Kelly
new CC&Rs, the task would be impossible. Fortunately, the California appellate court in a 2008 case called Fourth La Costa v. Seith approved sending the proposed amendments to the lenders, along with a letter notifying them that their failure to respond within a stated reasonable time would be considered “consent.” If your CC&Rs require lender consent or approval, don’t wait too long to get started. You’ll need someone to create a list of the mortgage holders, which in larger associations can take a number of hours to accomplish. Your association attorney should be familiar with this case. By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Kelly: Can an association have a line item on the reserve study called “Updating Governing Documents”? Gover ning documents are recommended to be reviewed and updated (by the association’s attorney) every few years (5-8 years). The reserve replacement fund is “used to accumulate financial resources designated for future major repairs and replacements”. Now, I suppose we could say we are “repairing the CC&Rs” or replacing them in the case of a total restatement, but my CPA friends are having a tough time calling the CC&Rs a capital item. I still think of it as an “association component” and worthy of having reserves set aside. How does an association set funds aside so that they will have funding available when the time comes to update the governing documents? S.S. (Manager), Cathedral City. Dear S.S.: Updating CC&Rs and Bylaws can be an expensive project for smaller associations, but for larger associations, the roadblock is the difficult task of obtaining sufficient members to vote. T.M, San Clemente Dear T.M.: Many associations have CC&Rs which state that a certain percentage of mortgage holders must approve any amendments (along with membership approval). Association legal counsel should check the CC&Rs to confirm if lender approval is necessary. New Ways to Strengthen Your Immune System
By Desert Star Staff Daily stress in a busy life can challenge immune system function. No matter what season it is, it’s important to continually build robust immunity, say experts. “The immune system is incredibly complex and we’re learning more each day about what weakens it and how we can
strengthen it for better health,” says Larry Robinson, PhD, vice president of scientific affairs at Embria Health Sciences, a manufacturer of natural, sciencebased ingredients that support wellness and vitality. With your optimum health in mind, Robinson and the experts at Embria are offering some tips for warding off
illness with a healthy immune system. Healthy Habits: One of the most effective strategies for maintaining a healthy immune system may just be common sense. Harvard Medical School calls healthy-living strategies a “first line of defense.” To boost the immune system and every other part of the body,
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. - About 180,000 California families with severely ill children are breathing a sigh of relief this week after Gov. Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill 187, which reauthorized the California Children’s Services program. Children in CCS get treatment for cystic fibrosis, pediatric cancer and other very rare severe illnesses. Kelly Hardy, senior managing director of the health team for the children’s advocacy
group Children Now, said patients are highly dependent on the program. “For these vulnerable kids and families, it’s very complicated to navigate the health-care system,” she said, “and losing access to care or losing access to a certain specialist, even for a day or two, could be lifethreatening.” CCS, which has been around since 1927, is being considered as a model for a similar federal program. Kelly
said CCS is being redesigned this year to make it easier on families. “Right now, CCS only covers the CCS-related condition,” she said. “For other primary care, a child would go through regular Medi-Cal. We’re very hopeful that an improved CCS system would provide whole-child care.” The final redesign will be approved in 2016 and should be implemented by January 2017. More information on CCS is online at dhcs.ca.gov.
treat your body right. Drink in moderation. Quit smoking. Eat a well-balanced diet. Get regular exercise and plenty of sleep. Supplements: Many people believe that taking a multivitamin or vitamin C is enough to maintain a strong immune system, but the truth is you may want a more multifaceted approach to your supplement regimen. Robinson recommends looking for a natural immune supplement, particularly one that contains EpiCor, a whole food yeast fermentate supplement comprised of proteins, fibers, polyphenols, vitamins, amino acids, beta-glucans and beneficial metabolites that work together on many levels to support a strong immune system. EpiCor can now be found in many natural, trusted brands, including Hyperbiotics Immune: Daily Immune & Wellness Formula, which also offers targeted probiotic support, zinc, vitamin C and Echinacea in a time release tablet. Another immune boosting supplement to consider is Natrol Immune Boost, which contains
EpiCor, vitamin C, vitamin D, Zinc and Selenium, clinically-validated ingredients to help support your body’s ability to stay healthy. The brand has consistently achieved the highest “A” rating from the Natural Products Association. Take a Vacation: The mindbody connection is powerful, and studies have shown that stress -- both temporary and chronic -can compromise one’s immunity. Be mindful of the stressors in your life and take steps to reduce or eliminate their causes. While you may not be able to quit your job, you can make a point to schedule a vacation or make better use of your leisure time. You can also take stock of what causes you stress and think about ways of managing your reactions to troubling people and circumstances. You may not think about how to strengthen the immune system until falling ill, but it works to protect you every day. Think beyond vitamin C and take comprehensive steps to support your immunity now and in the future. StatePoint

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The senior population of California will grow by two-thirds over the next 20 years, and most workers are not saving enough for retirement. The dire prediction comes in a new report from UC Berkeley released today called Aging California’s Retirement Crisis: State and Local Indicators. Dr. Nari Rhee, manager of the Retirement Security Program at UC Berkeley’s Center for Labor, says California’s senior population is increasingly vulnerable. “The fastest growing groups of seniors are age 80 and older, Latinos and Asians,” she says. “In addition, women will continue to make up a majority of seniors. And these are the very populations that tend to have fewer resources in retirement.” The report is the highlight of a conference on retirement being held today in Sacramento.
Another finding is that more than 6.2 million Californians do not have a retirement savings plan through their employer. Blanca Castro, advocacy director with AARP California, which is cosponsoring the conference, supports legislation coming next year that will establish the Secure Choice program – a retirement savings plan run by the state that would help Californians who don’t have access to a 401K. “The Secure Choice grants would be a vehicle for many people who currently don’t have a way to save for retirement,” she says. “Regardless of where you work, this savings program would always go with you.” The report also found that the Fresno and Los Angeles areas will face the largest populations of seniors who have no other retirement income apart from Social Security. New service offers relief from customer review site abuses
By Desert Star Staff Ask any business what they don’t like about customer review sites and you’re likely to get an earful. Anonymous posts, rants by angry ex-employees, positive reviews that are filtered and demoted, aggressive ad sales with implied ratings help for advertisers – the list is long. Businesses are fed up with being forced to play a game they don’t want to play. News stories confirm the seriousness of the problem, e.g. Yelp has admitted that as many as one in four reviews on their site are or could be fake (and are therefore suppressed). Other review mechanisms, including Amazon’s, have reportedly been gamed by unscrupulous marketing services, competitors and profile owners themselves. A new user review and business profile service is allowing business owners to suspend questionable or unverifiable comments, resolve problems before they post, and better manage their online and social media reputations. The service, called We Care, is being released this month by
PeopleClaim.com, an online dispute resolution system that helps consumers and businesses negotiate settlements online and without lawyers, mediators, or complicated processes. The new subscription profile program allows businesses to do the following: Review and respond to online user reviews before they post. Make offers to satisfy dissatisfied or disgruntled customers. Tell their side of the story publicly if they’re unable to satisfy the customer’s complaint. Verify customer identity. Allow satisfied customers’ comments to post without filtering or demotion. Filter out negative comments from customers who don’t respond. Tell their company’s unique story and link back to their website. PeopleClaim CEO Mark Deuitch says, “What’s different is this is a resolution-oriented process, not just a collection of gripes and five-star ratings. Our goal is not only to help separate

Guns at Camp Randall Stadium, in Classrooms?
By Desert Star Staff MADISON, Wis. – A bill to allow students to carry firearms at Wisconsin’s technical colleges and University of Wisconsin System schools is being circulated at the capitol. Right now, those institutions are allowed to ban weapons inside campus buildings. The Republican sponsors of the bill say allowing students to carry guns would be a deterrent to crime. The UW-Madison Police Department disagrees. Spokesman Marc Lovicott says allowing firearms at the Kohl Center or Camp Randall Stadium would be a security nightmare. “We have an obligation every football Saturday to protect 80,000 people who pack Camp Randall Stadium,” he points out. “We take that responsibility very seriously and now we’re talking about the possibility of individuals being allowed to bring weapons into a facility like that.” Lovicott emphasizes that according to FBI statistics, you are less likely to become a victim of a violent crime at UWMadison than you are in the state of Wisconsin as a whole. And he says allowing

UW-Madison police say allowing firearms at Camp Randall Stadium would be a security nightmare. Courtesy: UW-Madison students to carry firearms would put the safety of other students, faculty, staff and guests at risk. Lovicott says the existing state law appropriately balances individual rights with community safety. Plus, he says, the typical student is still very much in a developmental stage. “Our students sometimes make poor decisions,” he states. “We deal with that when we’re talking about issues
like underage drinking and students who drink themselves unconscious. And now the idea of wanting to put guns in their hands just doesn’t make sense to us.” According to Lovicott, the idea of allowing weapons in a stadium or a classroom creates a major security issue. He says the training required to obtain a concealed carry permit in Wisconsin is minimal,
and stresses that sworn police officers go through constant training for firearms safety. “Hours and hours and hours and hours of training to protect our campus,” he stresses. “And those are the protectors. We just don’t feel there’s evidence out there to support the idea that putting guns in the hands of our students – we don’t think that’s a good idea.” Source: Pubic News Service
Radio’s Laugh USA- The Family Comedy Channel. Some of her most popular anecdotes include “Don’t Go to Vegas Without A Baptist,” “Don’t Bungee Jump Naked” and “Don’t Send a Man to the Grocery Store.” Her witty depiction of everyday situations never fails to have audiences of all ages rolling with laughter. Professional speaking might not have been predicted when Jeanne was in the seventh grade in Graham, North Carolina, where she would have been voted most likely to make the basketball team and least likely to be a contestant in the Miss America Pageant. She did make the team, averaging more than thirty points per game in her junior and senior years. Named as Miss North Carolina 1963, she went on to compete in the Miss America
Pageant where she was named “Miss Congeniality.” Following her Miss North Carolina reign, she used the scholarship money to fund her college education. It was her participation in the Miss America pageant that turned Jeanne’s life into a succession of events that led her to be one of the funniest, busiest and most popular professional speakers in America today. Because she was asked to speak every day as Miss North Carolina, Jeanne traveled her native state for one year speaking at pageants and addressing civic clubs and corporations. When that time was over, she found that people were willing to pay her to come and address their groups and conventions and loving every laughing minute of it. They wanted Jeanne, not just as a title holder, but as someone who made them laugh. At that point, Jeanne still viewed speaking as a way to make a little money while continuing her education. She received her degree at Auburn University and taught physical education in high school and college, a career she enjoyed for nine years. But throughout those years, the requests continued to pour in for her to speak. In 1976, she stopped teaching and entered professional speaking full time. With the flexibility to speak more often, Jeanne’s rise in the speaking profession was nothing short of phenomenal. Clients and speakers alike were quick to recognize her ability.
In addition to a full speaking schedule, she has received many awards, including the Golden Gavel Award from Toastmasters International, Auburn University’s Woman Entrepreneur of the Year, and the 2003 Woman of Achievement by the Miss North Carolina Organization. She was inducted into the CPAE Speaker Hall of Fame, was named the North Carolina Press Association’s “North Carolinian of the Year” and, in 1989, became the first woman to receive the National Speakers Association’s most cherished honor, the Cavett Award. While she enjoys making people laugh, Jeanne views the role of a humorist as more than eliciting laughter. As audiences are holding their sides and wiping tears from their faces, she makes her point clear. Perhaps that is why thousands of meeting planners make their point clear when they say “the meetin’ ain’t over ‘til the tall lady speaks!” Through the generosity of Tim and Barbara Arnstein, the McCallum Theatre presents Jeanne Robertson on Friday, November 20, at 8:00pm. HOROSCOPES ARIES
A shift is occurring, a threshold almost crossed, new realities, work and responsibilities appear. You face the Sun, hidden behind Scorpio waters. Although not a Scorpio you and the sign of discipleship (Scorpio) share the influences of planets Mars and Mercury. So you’re in Scorpio’s family. All of you have transforming work to do. The key is intelligent communication. Use it for goodwill, for knowledge, to dispense knowledge, to uplift.
TAURUS There seems to be no rest and each day provides new challenges, surprises, upheavals. Healthwise, sometimes your back hurts, your head or knees. Don’t let your heart hurt even if things seem somewhat slow and difficult – weather, finances, moving forward, being understood. Help arrives in the form of unusual events, sometimes books. Continue with intentions to uplift humanity into the Light. Through loving visualization.
GEMINI The Libran energies offer you inspired thinking, dispersing new information, praise of others and identifying your creativity. You are the builder of a bridge (Antakarana, between Spirit and matter. Building this bridge

is Gemini’s purpose) in many ways, opening the minds of others to think differently, to see a new light, a new day, a new life ahead. Although you may not fully understand yet, ponder on this identity.
CANCER What at present is the focus of your life? Are you tending to resources for yourself and/or others? Are you being careful of what you communicate, how and to whom? It’s most important that you use language filled with kindness and compassion or separations around you and within your heart will occur. Language can either create and strengthen or destroy. Each of us must go beyond family and children. Creating goodness and gladness in the world.
LEO Good things are occurring with your money, finances and resources. What you give now returns to you ten-fold. Careful of any criticism – thinking and/or speaking. Criticism inflames our bodies, inflames situations, events and others. It’s good to take Turmeric (curcumin) daily. When anger occurs, neutralize with praise. Garden. Identify yourself through what you create. Our new identities are recognized through our creations. Even if you hide away, we still see you.
VIRGO Communication, all levels and aspects, is important for you to understand at this time. Mercury (your planet) rules communication. As the Sun in Scorpio moves through your house of communication, talk, thoughts, ideas and interactions are transformative. Scorpio brings the tests for right communicate seeking the intentions behind words. Observe these daily. Use communication for goodness and to bring forth loving kindness.
LIBRA This is an inward-looking time for Libra. Some event has forced Librans to concentrate on the past. There’s deep thought concerning new choices of behavior and beliefs to be made. Some Libras are pondering marriage, commitment. Attempt to complete things unresolved. In Libra we face the past, clear it through forgiveness, planning for future unobstructed lives. Release all non-respectful and unkind attitudes. Use words that “give love a chance.”
SCORPIO For a while you become more hidden and protected. There’s important internal work to do, developing self-empowerment through clearer identification. This happens yearly around Halloween. You drop into dark
waters for renewal, emerging when comfort calls. Your communication for the next year becomes more potent. Some will understand. Some won’t. Tell everyone you’re searching for Persephone.
SAGITTARIUS Communication with groups is key this month. You may feel somewhat restricted for the next several years. Saturn, the disciplined teacher, is reforming your identity. Tend carefully (not wildly) to resources. Are the foundations you relied upon no longer available? Is there uncertainty? Are things somewhat nebulous and painful? These are better than piercing and sharp. The wound will heal, making you more compassionate. New work comes calling. What will you choose?
CAPRICORN As you continue to have deep and transforming (Pluto) experiences, you may find that communication at times seems nebulous (with others) and a wound with communication may occur. Work through it with carefully chosen words, with love and deep listening. Deep Listening is part of spiritual psychology. Deep Listening eases the suffering of others, the world (and the self). Travel, new philosophies, a sense of justice, a new journey appears. Sturdy new shoes are needed.
AQUARIUS AQUARIUS: Be very cautious with resources and finances. Maintain this caution for the next several years. Have intentions for Goodwill in all endeavors. This leads always to Right Relations. Plant seeds of kindness wherever you are, in all speech and actions. Choose only what empowers you and attempt to empower others. Think on these things one by one. Place them in your heart. This is a spiritual time of opportunity for you.
PISCES Expect increased work and responsibilities. Maintain health and strength in order to meet all expectations. Catch up on medical exams, tests and doctor visits put off too long. Do you also need new shoes and a new bed? I heard you need newer technology. Relationships have been restrictive, money’s been perplexing, and change ceaseless. Who listens to you? Where is your home? No matter what occurs, have gratitude. Risa D’Angeles is the founder and director of the Esoteric & Astrological Studies Research Institute: Risa’s Esoteric Astrology. Ways to Give Back this Holiday Season
When making this year’s holiday gift list, consider how you might also give back to your local community. The holiday season is the perfect time of

year to do this, when volunteer and donation opportunities increase. Here are a few ideas to give back in your community: The Gift of Literacy: Only

children’s smiles this holiday season while also giving them an opportunity to succeed at school and beyond. The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation has given new toys to children in need for more than 60 years. The organization also extends its reach through a partnership with The UPS Store through the Toys for Tots Literacy Program, which provides economically disadvantaged children an opportunity to succeed in school and beyond. Donations can be made at The UPS Store locations nationwide or online at toysfortots.org/literacy. One-hundred percent of all proceeds go to support local children and literacy programs. Your donations go even further thanks to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, which is able to purchase books at a deep discount. To find a participating location near you and make a donation that will help ensure families everywhere have access to books, visit theupsstore.com. Bake Sale: When you’re busy making trays of cookies for your big holiday party, consider making an extra batch or two, and encouraging friends and neighbors to do the same. With your combined efforts, you can
host a bake sale, which can be a lucrative and enjoyable way to raise money for your favorite charity. If you don’t have time to organize an event like this, you can still give back through your baking. Wrap packs of cookies or other goodies in bags as thank you gifts to your children’s teachers, coaches and others in your community who have served or been kind to your family all year. Volunteer Your Time: One of the best ways to give back is by donating your valuable time. Make a trip to a local nursing home and spend time with residents who may not have family or anyone else to visit them this season. Additionally, soup kitchens are often in need of extra hands during the holidays. Ask your local organizations about volunteer opportunities. While holiday wish lists are often full of fun gadgets, clothes and toys, there are still many in your community lacking more basic necessities. This season, think beyond your personal wants and do your best to give back. (StatePoint)

Maternal marijuana use could have lifelong effects on unborn By Desert Star Staff Offspring of pregnant lab mice subjected to doses of THC, the main active ingredient in marijuana or cannabis, exhibited effects lasting a lifetime, according to a study published in the official journal of the National Academy of Sciences. Mice, like humans, are naturally equipped to receive cannabinoids, the chemical compounds found in marijuana. The primary cannabinoid receptor, CB1, sends signals to the brain, but when THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol interrupted that signaling, its full development was never realized in the in utero mice, even into adulthood. Unlike humans, mice have very high concentrations of cannabinoid receptors where motor skills and coordination of movement are developed. That partially explains why it’s difficult to know the full implications for humans of this study, which was carried out by scientists from Complutense University of Madrid, Spain. Besides being a potential red flag for recreational marijuana use, this study could have implications for people who take prescription drugs for seizures that are cannabinoidbased.
“The available data does indicate that any adverse impact of maternal cannabis use is arguably less than the known adverse effects of tobacco and alcohol,” said Paul Armentano, deputy director for the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, in an email to RT. “Ultimately, treating cannabis like other legal, regulated substances means, in certain circumstances, discouraging its use among certain populations,” he said, adding that “no doubt one can argue that such distinctions also ought to be made for cannabis when the available evidence supports doing so.” Does the evidence available call for discouraging marijuana use for pregnant women? Not quite. It’s more about erring on the side of caution, as other studies show inconclusive results. There have also been other studies of marijuana’s impact on the offspring of pregnant women, rather than mice, which show little or no connection between prenatal marijuana use and birth defects. In 2010, the National Institutes for Health, an agency of the Department of Health and
Human Services, found that “reported cannabis use does not seem to be associated with low birth weight or preterm birth.” In 2009, a study by the University of Bristol in Great Britain found no psychotic symptoms related to maternal marijuana use, while it did show maternal use of tobacco and alcohol caused an increased risk of psychosis. Two longitudinal studies to
determine the effect on the brain development of pre-born humans were shown to be inconclusive. They are the Maternal Health Practices and Child Development Study (MHPCDS), which looked at “high-risk” pregnant women of low socio-economic status using marijuana, alcohol, and other substances, and the Ottawa Prenatal Prospective Study (OPPS), which looked at prenatal exposure to marijuana
and tobacco smoking in “lowrisk” subjects from high socioeconomic backgrounds. The Neuroscience and Behavioral journal in 2005 found these two studies showed “subtle” negative differences beyond infancy in cognition, while recommending further study to make a more comprehensive conclusion.

By Desert Star Staff CHICAGO, -- When it comes to choosing the right toy for your child this holiday season, whom do you trust for advice? Organizations that review toys and create “best toy” lists are an important resource for holiday shopping ideas. But it’s critical that their judges are well qualified and that their criteria for reviewing and rewarding toys are relevant, well thought out, and designed to support play. The American Specialty Toy Association (ASTRA), recognized nationwide for its prestigious annual awards program, today announced its 2015 Best Toy for Kids Awards. Winners in 14 distinct categories are chosen by specialty store retailers – more than 800 men and women who understand the value of play and, day in and day out, have hands-on experience with how kids play. “The ASTRA Best Toys for Kids Award experts base their choices on what the child does with the toy, not what the toy does,” said Kimberly Mosley, ASTRA president. “They know what kids love – as well as what they’ll play with just once then toss to the sidelines. Because they recognize a quality play experience when they see it, these toy experts can offer helpful and meaningful recommendations on brands both large and small.” As a result, the annual Best Toys for Kids Award makes it easier for moms, dads and other gift-givers to make smart buying
decisions for their kids. The Best Toys for Kids Award honors the new and improved toys that promote open-ended or creative play, incorporate innovative design features and maintain exceptional safety standards. The winners of the 2015 ASTRA Best Toys for Kids Awards are:

California’s golden guy, Huell Howser honored
By Pamela Price Huell Howser, TV host explored California like nobody else sharing his discoveries with fans with enthusiasm regardless of the location, from the Annual Garlic Festival in Gilroy to the Tide Pools in Point Loma. He brought a breath of fresh air to California tourism with wit and humor, with one constant attribute, honesty and enthusiasm. He journeyed throughout California for over 25 years to bring that magic to his audience. As a travel journalist, he captured the essence of exploration in his two shows, California Gold and the RoadTrip series. His style and smiles were part of each program for California’s Public Broadcasing Stations, giving residents and tourist a reason to travel to such out of the way destinations such as the Mother Lode in the Gold Country 50 miles in Stockton or Fresno Fruit Fair Trail, An 80-miles network of orchards east of Fresno. His legacy lives on episodes that are now archived at Chapman University in Orange, CA. The collection includes approximately 8,000 videotape originals of more than 1,000 episodes of Huell various public TV shows, the original footage for all of these shows, and 1, 800-volume research library, still photos, and memorabilia people gave to him (www.chapm,an.edu/ huell-howser). The man, named as John Kennedy Santos Gurjao by the Irish Times, is believed to have swallowed 80 pellets containing a substance suspected as cocaine. It is understood that one pellet burst in his stomach, causing him to suffer a violent seizure. The 24 year-old became severely agitated half way through the two-hour journey from Lisbon to the Irish capital, which was carrying 168 passengers and six crewmembers. All of a sudden, he “ran amok” across the cabin and bit a fellow passenger. The cabin crew eventually restrained him. He was actually on the ground shaking violently,” said John Leonard, who was on the flight. “The noise he was making was like something I have never heard before.” “It’s not something you’d hear every day. It was like deep anguish is the best way I could describe it, very, very troubled,” he added, speaking to a Corkbased radio station. The plane was diverted to make an emergency landing at Cork Airport. Gurjao’s body was then transported to Cork University Hospital, where his body underwent a postmortem. Why is it So Hard to Accept Compliments?
Try a little experiment. Think of someone you love or respect, and offer her a compliment. Chances are high that she’ll deflect your kind words, if not outright tell you you’re just plain wrong, suggests a new study, which finds that nearly 40 percent of women have trouble accepting compliments. Why is it so hard to accept a compliment? Experts say it can often be associated with societal expectations that women appear humble or demur; and other times it’s because of one’s own negative self-image. In an effort to encourage women and girls to lean in and listen to the compliments they receive, Nutrisystem created the #NowBelieveIt campaign. To learn more, watch their video on Nutrisystem’s YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/ Nutrisystem. The next time you get a compliment, consider stopping
for a minute to hear the message -- you’re a good friend, a great mom, you work hard, you’re smart, you’re pretty -- and take it to heart. Then, pay it forward and tell someone else what you love or admire about them by using these simple tips. Be Honest: Would you want to hear a compliment that isn’t true? Then why give that to someone else. Be honest and don’t use compliments as conversation fillers. Stay in the Present: Sometimes compliments at work come with a caveat -- a reminder that despite good work, there’s more to be done, such as, “That was great, and don’t forget tomorrow’s deadline.” Instead of focusing on what needs to be done in the future, simply give the compliment then come back later to talk about that other project. Tell Them Why: When giving a compliment, be sure to tell the
other person why. Simply saying, “You did a great job today” may fall flat. Try to elaborate with something like, “You did a great job today and your enthusiasm made our whole team shine.” Shift Yo u r Focus: Compliments that include putdowns often leave the receiver feeling less than flattered. Try to stay away from saying things like “You look so good for your age” or “You’re an awesome parent considering how busy you are all the time.” Shift your focus to the compliment itself -- it’s more meaningful on its own. Dig Deeper: According to a recent poll, individuals want to hear compliments that dig deeper into who they truly are, such as ones about their personality, about being a good friend, about what they do, about their intellect Nearly 40 percent of women find it difficult to accept a compliment. and about being a good parent. Focus on these traits when giving compliments and the receptive to hearing them and All it takes is a little practice. receiver will be much more believing them. (StatePoint)

MUSIC Variety displayed on new discs BY ROBERT KINSLER
If variety is indeed the spice of life, look no further than a wide range of recent releases from Dave Gahan & Soulsavers, Rage Against The Machine, composer Danny Elfman and Billy J. Kramer with The Dakotas to satisfy a diverse group of music lovers.
Artist: Dave Gahan & Soulsavers Title: Angels & Ghosts (Columbia) You might like if you enjoy: Depeche Mode, Dave Gahan Tell me more: Although the Depeche Mode faithful have long recognized Dave Gahan as a singer of considerable force and artistic range, his name is often sadly overlooked by the rock world at large. Maybe the English singer’s latest project Dave Gahan & Soulsavers, a collaboration that is a particularly effective showcase for his vocal powers, will bring more attention to one of modern rock’s greatest frontmen. Rather than immerse his rich baritone amidst the electronica of Depeche Mode, Gahan & Soulsavers’ “Angels & Ghosts” is more rooted in blues, gospel and Americana, with the the spirited mix of nine songs recalling recent recordings
from the far-flung likes of Other Lives, Florence + the Machine, the Doors and Blur’s recent gem “The Magic Whip.” The blues guitar-drenched “Shine” and ambitious “You Owe Me” are as melodic as they are forceful. “One Thing” is a beautiful ballad adorned by keyboards and a symphonic soundscape; “My Sun” is a sparse foray in its opening section with the song gradually building to a sweeping symphonic finale. led to the ultimate release of Rage Against The Machine’s “Live at Finsbury Park” (available on DVD, Blu-ray and digital video). Rage Against The Machine supported a campaign to have “Killing In The Name” promoted by the influential Morter with agreement that proceeds from the sales of the single would go to charity if the single reached number one by Christmas 2009. Further thrilling fans was when the band performed a free concert in England to celebrate reaching number 1; that concert Artist: Rage Against (staged on June 6, 2010) is as The Machine powerful as fans would expect. DVD Title: Live at Hard-hitting rockers such as Finsbury Park (Eagle “Bulls On Parade,” “Sleep Now Rock Entertainment) In The Fire” and the dramatic You might like if you set-ending “Killing In The Name” enjoy: Rage Against the are delivered with the band’s Machine, Tom Morello groundbreaking rap-metal style. Tell me more: Few bands Information: eagle-rock.com. have fused left-leaning politics and passion with as much Artist: Danny Elfman firepower as Rage Against The Title: Goosebumps (Original Machine. Ironically, it was a Motion Picture Soundtrack) creative effort by English DJ (Sony Masterworks) Jon Morter and his wife Tracy You might like if you in early December 2009 to enjoy: Soundtracks promote an alternative to the by Danny Elfman seemingly inevitable “X-Factor” Tell me more: Coming 30 winner scoring the #1 Christmas years after his first film score hit on the UK singles chart that (the delightful music for “Pee-
wee’s Big Adventure” released in 1985), Danny Elfman’s stellar soundtrack for the newlyreleased movie “Goosebumps” is yet another achievement for the former frontman for Oingo Boingo. A beautiful and expansive 29-track soundtrack that works even apart from the film, highlights include the lovely “Ferris Wheel,” urgent “Ice Rink” and tender “Camcorder.” Having scored 30 or so soundtracks and being the recipient of four Academy Award nominations, wouldn’t it be nice if the talented GRAMMY and Emmy Award winner received an Oscar perhaps for this deserving soundtrack. the forthcoming Billy J. Kramer with The Dakotas retrospective “All-Time Greatest Hits” (Varese Sarabande Records is set to issue the collection on Oct. 23, 2015). Managed by famed Beatles manager Brian Epstein, Kramer was the beneficiary of a number of Lennon/McCartney songs that comprised a good share of the hits he scored in the early and mid-1960s. The yearning “Bad To Me” and wistful “From A Window” are as strong as anything penned by Lennon and McCartney in the early 1960s (McCartney provided some harmonies on the latter), and the baroque pop gem “I’ll Keep You Satisfied” has always struck this writer as evoking the song craft of George Harrison Artist: Billy J. Reader Advisory: The National Trade Association we belong to has purchased the above classifieds. Determining the value of their service or product is advised by this publication. In order to avoid misunderstandings, some advertisers do not offer employment but rather supply the readers with manuals, directories and other materials designed to help their clients establish mail order selling and other businesses at home. Under NO circumstance should you send any money in advance or give the client your checking, license ID, or credit card numbers. Also beware of ads that claim to guarantee loans regardless of credit and note that if a credit repair company does business only over the phone it is illegal to request any money before delivering its service. All funds are based in US dollars. Toll free numbers may or may not reach Canada. California law requires that contractors taking jobs that total $500 or more (labor and/ or materials) must be licensed by the Contractors State License Board. State law also requires that contractors include their license number on all advertising. You can check the status of your licensed contractor at www.cslb. ca.gov or 800-321-CSLB

Distracted Drivers Are A Top Safety Concern Today
By Desert Star Staff IRVINE, Calif., -- Even though 46 states have laws in place banning texting and driving, and 14 states ban the use of talking on a cell phone while driving [1], 97 percent of consumers say that distracted drivers who text or talk and drive are one of the biggest safety concerns impacting today’s motorists, according to an allnew survey by Kelley Blue Book www.kbb.com, the only vehicle valuation and information source trusted and relied upon by both consumers and the automotive industry. Of those surveyed, 91 percent are aware of current local laws pertaining to texting while driving. In addition, approximately 81 percent of respondents believe Millennials between the ages of 19-34 text most often of all age groups while driving. “Mobile phone technology offers enhanced convenience and connectivity for consumers, but it is increasingly a source of
distraction on the road,” said Arthur Henry, senior manager of Strategic Insights for Kelley Blue Book. “In fact, consumers believe drivers who use cell phones are a more significant safety concern than drunk drivers, road rage or weather conditions.” Distracted driving beat out impaired drivers on the road at 75 percent of respondents, followed by road rage at just over half of respondents and weather conditions at 35 percent of respondents citing it as one of the biggest safety concerns impacting today’s drivers. “According to Kelley Blue Book’s latest survey, almost half of consumers send text messages while driving because they feel it can’t wait,” said Rebecca Lindland, senior director of Commercial Insights for Kelley Blue Book. “In order to combat this issue, friends, family and colleagues need to develop situational awareness and avoid
texting someone when we know they are driving in an effort to keep them and other drivers out of harm’s way. Your text can wait.” Key Highlights from Kelley Blue Book’s Texting and Driving Survey 97 percent of total respondents selected “distracted drivers on the road (e.g. people texting or talking on cell phones)” as one of the biggest safety concerns impacting today’s drivers. 91 percent report being aware of current local laws pertaining to texting while driving. On average, total respondents think 41 percent of drivers text while driving. 66 percent of all respondents think, of all age groups, 19-25 year olds text most often while driving, followed by 26-34 year olds and 15-18 year olds, respectively, at 15 percent each. 20 percent of total respondents indicate texting
while driving, while 55 percent of Millennials (respondents between the ages of 18-34) report texting while driving. 62 percent of total respondents report texting while at a standstill, 2 percent while in motion, and 36 percent both at a standstill and while in motion. Just 45 percent of Millennials admit that their ability to drive is compromised when texting while driving, compared to 59 percent of total respondents. Nearly half (47 percent) of total respondents say they text while driving because they “feel it can’t wait.” 75 percent of total respondents feel guilty and/ or worried when they text and drive. Only 60 and 64 percent of Millennials, respectively, feel the same. 76 percent of total respondents believe “technology that will make it safer/easier to communicate while in a vehicle,”
such as voice-to-text or textto-speech, would make them abstain from texting while driving. 27 percent said it would take getting into an accident to make them abstain. 50 percent of Millennials report themselves or someone they know personally almost getting into an accident as a result of being on a cell phone, compared to just 29 percent of total respondents. Of all respondents with children between the ages of 1518 living in their household that currently drive: 30 percent know or suspect their children of engaging in texting while driving. 42 percent know or suspect their children of talking on a cell phone (not using a hands-free method). Kelley Blue Book fielded this survey from October 8-12, 2015, and the survey had 1,281 respondents.

The inspiration behind the recently-launched Kickstarter campaign, Emma Rose Harris, just celebrated 4 months of life and has begun teething. The McCallum Theatre and Fitz’s Jazz Café at the McCallum present Al Jarreau on Saturday, November 21, at 8:00pm. Al Jarreau’s innovative musical expressions have made him one of the most exciting and critically-acclaimed performers of our time with seven Grammy® Awards, scores of international music awards and accolades worldwide. Al began singing at the age of four, harmonizing with his brothers and performing solo at events in his hometown of Milwaukee. Music, however, was not always the major force in his life. He excelled in sports and was an above-average student throughout high school and college. Enrolling at Ripon College in Wisconsin, Al continued singing for fun, performing locally with a group called The Indigos during weekends and holidays, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. After earning a Master’s Degree in Vocational Rehabilitation from the University of Iowa, he relocated to San Francisco to begin a career in rehabilitation counseling. In San Francisco, Al’s musical gifts began to shape his future. He performed at a small jazz club with a trio headed by George Duke, and by the late 60s, he knew he would make singing his life. Moving to Los Angeles,
he began his apprenticeship in such famed nightspots as Dino’s, the Troubadour and the Bitter End West. Shortly thereafter, he branched out to New York City as well where he gained national television exposure with Johnny Carson, Merv Griffin, David Frost and Mike Douglas. Al teamed with guitarist Julio Martinez to “spell” up-and-coming comics John Belushi, Bette Midler, Robert Klein, David Brenner, Jimmie Walker and others at the comedy venue The Improv. In 1975, following an extended stint at the Bla Bla Cafe in Los Angeles, Warner Bros. talent scouts spotted Al and signed him to a recording contract. His debut album for the label, We Got By, was released to unanimous acclaim. It was a reception that spread across the Atlantic and he was awarded a German Grammy for Best New International Soloist. A second German Grammy came his way with the release of his follow-up album Glow. Al’s breakthrough came in 1977 with Look to the Rainbow, his live double album from his first world tour and he earned his first Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. His fourth album, All Fly Home (1978) earned a second Grammy. It was followed by a string of innovative offerings, including This Time (1980) and Breakin’
Away (1981) which brought two more Grammy Awards. In 1983, Jarreau was released, followed by High Crime (1984); Al Jarreau - Live in London (1985) and L is for Lover (1986). With hardly time to take a breath, he launched into the recording of Heart’s Horizon (1988). After touring the globe for nearly two years, he returned to the studio to record 1992’s Heaven and Earth, which earned his fifth Grammy. With this, Al became one the rare artists to have won Grammy Awards in the three categories of jazz, pop, and R&B. Al added a new chapter to his recording career with Tomorrow Today (2001). He spent the remainder of 2001 touring in the U.S. and abroad and working on All I Got (2002), followed by Accentuate the Positive (2004). Al’s 30th year in the music business saw another landmark, pairing with George Benson for Givin’ It Up. Recorded in 2006 and winning two Grammy Awards, the album featured guest artists including Herbie Hancock, Sir Paul McCartney, Jill Scott, Chris Botti and Patti Austin. Al continued to release hit albums including Love Songs (2008) with his favorite romantic tunes spanning three decades and his first holiday album, Christmas (2008). In 2009, Al took a 6-week European tour and also found time to put together
a-kind additions to the everyday are not far out of reach. Currently available only through the California couple’s Kickstarter campaign “Kick Butt Keys”, the opportunity to reserve a set in time for the holidays will expire at the campaign’s close at 10 a.m. on Nov. 4, 2015. With delivery promised for midDecember, these limited-time, unique accessories offer the perfect holiday gift for all Maclovers alike. Returning to work after welcoming their daughter, Emma, into the world in May 2015, the duo used scaled keyboard photos and CorelDRAW to create a rough draft of the design, printed the design on laser printer-friendly clear plastic transparencies and held the print over the keys of each of the different types of Mac keyboards; adjusting each design until it was just right. Working with a friend who did laser engraving, the couple created their prototypes. Using a Kickstarter campaign, the Harrises became part of a global group of artists, musicians, filmmakers, designers, and other creators - 9 million strong - with the hope of bringing their creation to life. T H E AT R E ‘Annie’ on Stage & ‘Jurassic World’ on DVD BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN
The original production of “Annie” opened April 21, 1977 on Broadway and went on to win countless awards. It not only won the Grammy for Best Cast Show Album, it also garnered seven Tony Awards that included: Best Musical, Best Book (Thomas Meehan) and Best Score (Charles Strouse, Martin Charnin). The long running hit ran for 2,377 performances and has been performed in 28 languages. In fact, the show has been running somewhere around the world for the past 37 years. If, during all that time, you haven’t seen this sunny, heartwarming musical, now is your chance since “Annie” will be at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre through Sunday, November 1, 2015. And L.A. audiences are in luck because Martin Charnin, the original Broadway lyricist and director, returns to directing this latest incarnation of this Tony Award winning hit. The opening-night audience fully embraced the new production, performed by a 25-member company. Ten-yearold Issie Swickle made her tour debut in the title role. Angelina Carballo, Lilly Bee Ireland, Molly Rose Meredith, Emily Moreland, Lilly Mae Steward and Isabel Wallach played her fellow orphans with gusto. Lynn Andrews is pitch perfect in the role of Miss Hannigan. She runs the orphanage, but obviously she hates her job and all the little girls who are driving her crazy. She is so good at being bad that you can’t totally hate her. In fact, you look forward to seeing her as often as possible, and boy can she belt out a song. Garrett Deagon plays her truly rotten brother, Rooster and Ashley Edler is his gal pal. Daddy Warbucks, the multi-billionaire businessman, is the Donald Trump of the Depression era. He is well sung by Gilgamesh Taggett, who quickly grows to love Annie when she visits his palatial home for two weeks at Christmas time. Lucy Werner is his loyal and loving secretary Lily. Jeffrey B. Duncan plays FDR and Sunny, a 5-year-old rescue terrier mix, stars as Sandy, Annie’s beloved dog. Sunny got lots of applause at the end of the show when he came out on stage to take his bow-wow.
The delightful score is infectious and includes such songs as: “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile,” “Easy Street,” “I Don’t Need Anything But You” and the uplifting “Tomorrow” when the sun comes up. In fact, you can bet your bottom dollar, there’ll be sun! And as always the show begins with the little gals scrubbing the floor as they belt out “It’s a Hard Knock Life.” After 37 years “Annie” still retains it’s boundless enthusiasm and optimism, and I’ll bet my bottom dollar you’ll leave the theatre singing “Tomorrow.” Individual tickets for “Annie” start at $25 in the Orchestra. (Prices are subject to change without notice.) For more information on “Annie” visit www.AnnieTheMusical. com. Tickets available online at HollywoodPantages.com or Ticketmaster.com or by phone at 1-800-982-2787. They can also be purchased in person at the theatre box office at 6233 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles.

The film takes place twentytwo years after Jurassic Park opened. Now the attraction is bigger and better, giving guests a chance to experience the thrill of seeing actual dinosaurs. The current owner wants to make the park even more exciting and has, with the help of scientists, created a new species of dinosaur with savage capabilities. Unfortunately this massive creature, even more terrible than the T-Rex, manages to escape, wreaking chaos all across the island. To protect the tourists, Owen one of the trainers (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) a park executive, join forces to save island tourists from the escaped prehistoric beast.
