Biden Not Running For President

Vice-president Joseph Biden has announced he would not be running for President in 2016 By Desert Star Staff With President Barack Obama and most senior administration officials in attendance, Biden told reporters that the window for a campaign has closed. Speaking to the reporters hastily assembled at the White House’s Rose Garden shortly after noon Wednesday, the vicepresident said his family was still

grieving over the death of his son Beau, who passed away from brain cancer in May. The grieving process does not abide by filing deadlines and primaries, Biden said. The announcement put to rest a week of frenzied speculation in Washington on whether the VP would jump into the Democratic presidential race. Biden’s decision is widely

seen as a boon to Hillary Clinton, the current frontrunner of the party establishment facing a grassroots challenge from Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. Though he made clear that he would not run for office, Biden spoke at length about his vision for America based on equality, education, and dignity for everyone.

“I am absolutely certain that we fully are capable of accomplishing extraordinary things. We can do this. And when we do, America won’t just win the future, we will own the finish line,” Biden said, wrapping up the appearance. Many Democrats waxed enthusiastic about Biden’s candidacy, considering Clinton a candidate with too much

political baggage, vulnerable to attacks both by Sanders and the Republicans. However, critics on the left have pointed out that during his 36 years as Senator from Delaware, Biden has championed several laws contributing to the current social issues. At the press conference, Continues on Page 5

Dwight D. Eisenhower Honored

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Walk of Stars honored former President and General Dwight D. Eisenhower with the 386th star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars. The event took place in front of the Palm Springs Eisenhower Health Center that was once the Merril Lynch building at 415 South Palm Canyon Drive on Wednesday October 14th. They completely transformed the building into a marvel of medical assistance. The star was presented on what would have been the Generals 125 birthday. The Star also starts Eisenhower Medical Centers 45th anniversary celebration. The General said that

it was one of his most precious memories to have a medical Center named after him and his pride in the fact he was such a big part in its accomplishments. Eisenhower dignitaries spoke to the audience and told of their special 45th anniversary and how the medical center came to be with the help of General Eisenhower. General Eisenhower was well known for his supreme commanding of our victorious forces in Europe during World War II. He served two terms as President of the United States and excelled as the leader of our country. He was loved by the people enough to vote him into a second term even after having

a heart attack. He is credited with so very many programs, and he focused on maintaining world peace. He was a leader in desegregation, a balanced budget and peace treaties. The Star Dedication was an impressive sight. Two flags flew in front of the Building, and white chairs were placed on the sidewalk, the stairs and filled the space in front of the building. An Ike Jeep stood on the road in front of the Star. People filled the chairs and there was standing room only in the rear. The Marine Corps Color Guard from 29 Continues on Page 4

Family Fun at the McCallum

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The McCallum Theatre held its 4th annual Family Fun Day Celebration on Sunday, October 18th with a family show and fun things for the little ones. Food and fun started at noon for amusing things geared for the little ones with face paintings, foods and balloon figures. Kids walked around with painted faces and arms. Parents watched as their children enjoyed this special treat. Families took photos in front of a McCallum Theatre backdrop; there were other outside activities that were held in the front of the Theatre. There were special prizes and a silent auction, something for everyone, young and old. There was a booth where children, and their parents painted pictures and glued on sparkly stuff. There were large boards in the Lobby that displayed these works of art by the children. Each child got to watch his or her painting being pinned to the board, and some had their photo taken with the painting on that board which was exciting for the children. Children were seen walking around with balloons as characters or weapons like swords.

The entertainment started on the stage at 2:30 after a raffle where one lucky family got $1,000 dollars. The entertainment was geared toward children and parents who were young at heart. Everyone loves animals and animal tricks. The Olate Dogs, Winners of Americas Got Talent 2012, dazzled the kids with their dogs that do amazing tricks. The San Diego Zoo brought exotic animals to show, and Dr. Zoolittle emceed the event in a feathery headdress. Another America’s Got talent Alumni, Kevin Johnson, thrilled the audience with his ability as a ventriloquist. The event will benefit the McCallum Theatre Institute, the Arts Education program that provides arts training to over 40,000 students and educators each year. They serve 70 % of the Coachella Valley’s Classrooms. The Theatre holds special performances for the children of the Desert and even bus the children from the schools for these events. The Community Outreach programs reach all Coachella Valley children to instill the love of the Arts in every child.

at the very private retreat, Colony 29, in Palm Springs. The event is held every year and is a major fundraiser for AIDS Assistance

Program-Food Samaritans. The need is critical to be able to help local residents with food and assistance to survive. There is a waiting list, and this event was asking people to become Angels to support AAP. Executive Director of AAP spoke to the crowd of several hundred people. Anton said this is one of the most important events in raising money for the programs that are provided by AAP. The special guest and Headliner were none other than the beautiful and talented Mary Wilson of the Supremes. Local radio personality Bill Finegold October 23, 2015

introduced her to the crowd to a rousing applause. Finegold said his wish was to be one of the Supremes. Wilson came on Stage and announced she would be doing some of the most famous songs of the Supremes. Occasionally she invited the audience to sing a-long with her and asked them to come up and dance. She asked a few to come up and dance to her song “STOP in the Name of Love” and several came on the dance floor to dance to the tune. Wilson mesmerized the guests with her fabulous vocals and brought many memories of the wonderful Supremes. There was no admission charged for this event, but

guests were asked to give to this worthwhile charity. This is AAPs, Annual Giving Program, to continue this very needed charity. It’s hard to turn down people living with HIV-AIDS and other serious illnesses in need of food and assistance because of a lack of funds. AAP has to survive with donations from Private donations, business and community support, foundation grants and special events such as this Jeanette Rockefeller Angel Program kickoff party. AAP gets no Federal or state funding but has still helped more than 1,500 clients. Clients get a $100 voucher a month for food and other personal needs, and all donations are Tax-deductable. www.desertstarweekly.com

years. If, during all that time, you haven’t seen this sunny, heartwarming musical, now is your chance since “Annie” will be at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre through Sunday, November 1, 2015. And L.A. audiences are in luck because Martin Charnin, the original Broadway lyricist and director, returns to directing this latest incarnation of this Tony Award winning hit. The opening-night audience fully embraced the new production, performed by a 25-member company. Ten-yearold Issie Swickle made her tour debut in the title role. Angelina Carballo, Lilly Bee Ireland, Molly Rose Meredith, Emily Moreland, Lilly Mae Steward and Isabel Wallach played her fellow orphans with gusto. Lynn Andrews is pitch perfect in the role of Miss Hannigan. She runs the orphanage, but obviously she hates her job and all the little girls who are driving her crazy. She is so good at being bad that you can’t totally hate her. In fact, you look forward to seeing her as often as possible, and boy can she belt out a song. Garrett Deagon plays her truly rotten brother, Rooster and Ashley Edler is his gal pal. Daddy Warbucks, the multi-billionaire businessman, is the Donald Trump of the Depression era. He is well sung by Gilgamesh Taggett, who quickly grows to love Annie when she visits his palatial home for two weeks at Christmas time. Lucy Werner is his loyal and loving secretary Lily. Jeffrey B. Duncan plays FDR and Sunny, a 5-year-old rescue terrier mix, stars as Sandy, Annie’s beloved dog. Sunny got lots of applause at the end of the show when he came out on stage to take his bow-wow. The delightful score is infectious and includes such songs as: “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile,” “Easy Street,” “I Don’t Need Anything But You” and the uplifting “Tomorrow” when the sun comes up. In fact, you can bet your bottom dollar, there’ll be sun! And as always the show begins with the little gals scrubbing the floor as they belt out “It’s a Hard Knock Life.” After 37 years “Annie” still retains it’s boundless enthusiasm and optimism, and I’ll bet my bottom dollar you’ll leave the theatre singing “Tomorrow.” Individual tickets for “Annie” start at $25 in the Orchestra. (Prices are subject to change without notice.) For more information on “Annie” visit www.AnnieTheMusical. com. Tickets available online at HollywoodPantages.com or Ticketmaster.com or by phone at 1-800-982-2787. They can also be purchased in person at the theatre box office at 6233 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles.

The long wait is over. The Blockbuster mega hit of summer, “Jurassic World,” has roared into stores and is available in 3-D Blue-ray, Blu-ray, DVD and on demand as of October 20. This stunning sequel to Steven Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park,” which we enjoyed more than two decades ago, broke boxoffice records this summer when it scored the highest domestic, international and worldwide opening of all time. The film takes place twentytwo years after Jurassic Park opened. Now the attraction is bigger and better, giving guests a chance to experience the thrill of seeing actual dinosaurs. The current owner wants to make the park even more exciting and has, with the help of scientists, created a new species of dinosaur with savage capabilities. Unfortunately

October 23, 2015

this massive creature, even more terrible than the T-Rex, manages to escape, wreaking chaos all across the island. To protect the tourists, Owen one of the trainers (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) a park executive, join forces to save island tourists from the escaped prehistoric beast. The movie keeps you on the edge of your seat, but may be too intense for very young children. However you and the older kids will have a blast. From Universal, rated PG-13 for frightening action sequences and violence involving prehistoric creatures. Bonus features exclusive to Blu-ray include: “Welcome to Jurassic World”--an in-depth look at how the film was crafted and “Jurassic World: All -Access Pass” in which Chris Pratt and director Colin Trevorrow discuss key moments in the film,

supported by behind-the-scenes footage. In another segment Chris Pratt gives a tour of the Innovation Center, a museum/ exhibit built just for the movie. In “Jurassic’s Closest Shaves” clips from all films in the franchise show “near death” or extremely scary encounters with dinosaurs. Additional Blu-ray and DVD bonus features include: Deleted Scenes, “Dinosaurs Roam Once Again,” a behind-the-scenes look of the film’ s visual effects, how the dinosaurs came to life and how the actors filmed scenes. In “Chris & Colin Take on the World,” Chris Pratt and the director interview each other and discuss “Jurassic World” as well as the other “Jurassic Park” movies

‘$63k of cocaine’ in AerLingus passenger’s stomach led to biting rage & death By Desert Star Staff A Brazilian passenger who died after ‘running amok’ and biting another passenger on a flight from Lisbon to Dublin on Sunday was alleged to have been carrying 800 grams of cocaine in his stomach, with a street value of $63,000. The man, named as John Kennedy Santos Gurjao by the Irish Times, is believed to have swallowed 80 pellets containing a substance suspected as cocaine. It is understood that one pellet burst in his stomach, causing him to suffer a violent seizure. The 24 year-old became severely agitated half way through the two-hour journey from Lisbon to the Irish capital, which was carrying 168 passengers and six crewmembers. All of a sudden, he “ran amok” across the cabin and bit a fellow passenger. The cabin crew eventually restrained him.

Gurjao became unconscious and a doctor and two nurses who were amongst the passengers rushed to help him. He was actually on the ground shaking violently,” said John Leonard, who was on the flight. “The noise he was making was like something I have never heard before.” “It’s not something you’d hear every day. It was like deep anguish is the best way I could describe it, very, very troubled,” he added, speaking to a Corkbased radio station. The plane was diverted to make an emergency landing at Cork Airport. Gurjao’s body was then transported to Cork University Hospital, where his body underwent a postmortem. A Portuguese woman in her 40s was arrested after being suspected of drugs offences after a quantity of amphetamines was discovered on the plane.

Biden spoke about the importance of education and floated a proposal to limit tax deductions in order for the federal government to subsidize college for everyone. According to David Sirota writing in the International Business Times, Biden backed a 2005 bill that made it more difficult for Americans to declare bankruptcy, and entirely impossible in case of student loans. At the time, one of his biggest donors was the credit card issuer MBNA. Biden also championed a 1994 gun control bill that ended up creating financial incentives for mass incarceration, Sirota noted. Candidates from both parties reacted to Biden’s announcement. Biden’s comments on how the Democrats should run on Obama’s record has been

interpreted by some reporters as a warning to Hillary Clinton, who has distanced herself from Obama policies like the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and elements of the healthcare reform. Clinton, however, praised Biden’s optimism and called him a “good friend and a great man.” Bernie Sanders chose to highlight the vice-president’s words of support for the middle class. Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal, one of the contenders for the Republican presidential nomination, saw Biden’s announcement as opening the doors to a GOP victory in 2016. Jindal is polling around 1 percent. Currently the most popular Republican candidate, Donald Trump, approved of Biden’s decision, adding that he would rather run against Clinton.

The total amount of the unpaid balance of the obligation secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is $735,285.81. The beneficiary under said Deed of Trust heretofore executed and delivered to the undersigned a written Declaration of Default and Demand for Sale, and a written Notice of Default and Election to Sell. The undersigned caused said Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 800-7588052 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site www.homesearch. com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case 00000004735410. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 916-939-0772 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site www.nationwideposting.com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case 20130169806109. Which Toys Are The Right Ones For Your Kids This Holiday Season? that rewards transactions with lights, sounds, and voice messages. Holds actual-sized money and includes a built-in scanner, scale, coin slot, and volume control. Kids practice arithmetic and bill recognition. Requires 3 C batteries, not included. Ages 3+, $54.99

By Desert Star Staff CHICAGO, -- When it comes to choosing the right toy for your child this holiday season, whom do you trust for advice? Organizations that review toys and create “best toy” lists are an important resource for holiday shopping ideas. But it’s critical that their judges are well qualified and that their criteria for reviewing and rewarding toys are relevant, well thought out, and designed to support play. The American Specialty Toy Association (ASTRA), recognized nationwide for its prestigious annual awards program, today announced its 2015 Best Toy for Kids Awards. Winners in 14 distinct categories are chosen by specialty store retailers – more than 800 men and women who understand the value of play and, day in and day out, have hands-on experience with how kids play. “The ASTRA Best Toys for Kids Award experts base their choices on what the child does with the toy, not what the toy does,” said Kimberly Mosley, ASTRA president. “They know what kids love – as well as what they’ll play with just once then toss to the sidelines. Because they recognize a quality play experience when they see it, these toy experts can offer helpful and meaningful recommendations on brands both large and small.” As a result, the annual Best Toys for Kids Award makes it easier for moms, dads and other gift-givers to make smart buying

decisions for their kids. The Best Toys for Kids Award honors the new and improved toys that promote open-ended or creative play, incorporate innovative design features and maintain exceptional safety standards. The winners of the 2015 ASTRA Best Toys for Kids Awards are:
