A Spellbinding “Dear Evan Hansen” on Stage at the Ahmanson Theatre By Lady Beverly Cohn When the National Touring Company of a play that won six Tony Awards last year goes on the road, one invariably wonders if the Los Angeles production will get the same caliber of performances as those presented on Broadway.
Please don’t worry as this production of “Dear Evan Hansen,” with book by Tony Award-winner Steven Levenson, 15 songs with music and lyrics by the awardwinning team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who won an Oscar for “La La Land,” has
travelled exceedingly well. Although you might not walk out of the theatre humming any of the music, each of the songs is relevant to the immediate action and drives the narrative forward. Tying all the complex elements together is the impeccable
direction of Michael Greif, four-time Tony Award nominee for his direction in “Rent,” and “Next to Normal”. What’s fascinating about the strong book is if you removed the musical components, it could be a stand-along riveting drama, but that said, the
By Desert Star Staff PHOENIX – As midterm elections approach, health care is proving to be a major issue on the minds of voters in Arizona and around the country. Americans are especially concerned about the rights of people with preexisting conditions. About 27 percent of Americans ages 18-to-64 have some kind of pre-existing health condition, such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. Polling suggests voters don’t want insurance companies to be able to deny coverage to those people. Jim Ratcliff, CEO of
Rowpar Pharmaceuticals, Inc., says before the Affordable Care Act, nine of his 12 employees were found to have pre-existing conditions, but the ACA has given him more options to insure all of his workers. “We need to step back and think about how we can help everybody be healthier, because it’s a benefit to all of us,” he states. A Kaiser Family Foundation poll found 75 percent of Americans say it’s very important that the ACA provision preventing insurers from denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions remains law. Ratcliff says not only did the ACA ensure that
his employees with preexisting conditions would be covered, but the law helped his business offer benefits to stay competitive with larger companies. “The claims that are made in the political debates about being unaffordable and killing small business, that just has not been our experience,” he stresses. “It just didn’t correspond to any of our reality at all. “ Kaiser polling shows Americans across the political spectrum support preexisting condition protections. That includes 86 percent of Democrats, 75 percent of independents and 58 percent of Republicans.

Groundbreaking set for Coachella Senior Center expansion By Desert Star Staff COACHELLA, Calif.– The City of Coachella kicked off an expansion of the Eleanor Senior Center with a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday. To better serve Coachella’s growing senior population, the City will add 2,000 square feet of space and make improvements to the existing building, including a bathroom remodel and additional parking spaces. The $2 million project is being paid for with revenue from Measure U, the 1 percent sales tax increase passed by voters in 2014. “Seniors are a vital part of our community and we want
to make sure they have the support of our City,” Mayor Steven Hernandez said. “This expansion offers more space to serve their needs and make their home away from home that much more enjoyable.” The Eleanor Senior Center offers health screenings, nutritional programs, fitness activities and recreational opportunities. “Each year we have more and more people utilizing the center and its services and programs,” said Maria Arcos, the senior center coordinator. “This expansion allows us to welcome even more seniors and eventually expand our offerings.” The Eleanor Senior Center
is located at 1540 Seventh Street, across from the new

Georgetown University Center on Health Insurance Reforms, says the new plans will be able to reject people because of their age or health status. “They can deny people outright if they have a health condition that they don’t want to cover,” she points out. “They can cap your benefits. They cannot cover major benefits like prescription drugs or preventive care. They are really completely unregulated.” Supporters of the new federal guidance say the less comprehensive plans will encourage more young, healthy people to buy insurance. Each state will still be required to offer more comprehensive, ACAcompliant plans, but Corlette predicts the pool of people left in them will be older and sicker, which will lead insurance companies to raise rates or leave the ACA market altogether.
So, the battle over the ACA now moves to the state level. Corlette adds that red states such as Texas, which has sued to invalidate the ACA, may be more likely to seek a waiver that would undermine the program – and that could hurt people approaching retirement. “If you are between 50 and 64, the affordability of insurance, if you have to buy it on your own, is going to vary,” she explains. “And there are some states, in the name of greater choices – particularly for young and healthy people, you know – the trade-off is that insurance becomes more expensive for people who are older, who have pre-existing conditions.” If states are granted a waiver under the new rules, the new types of plans could come onto the market in 2020.
Experts Warn ACA Waivers Could Hike Rates on Pre-Existing Conditions
Experts predict premiums will climb for older patients in states that introduce non-ACA-compliant plans. Care Act, which would allow the sale of cheaper, so-called “skinny” plans that do not offer the minimum benefits required under the ACA. Sabrina Corlette, a research professor at the

It’s not because you’re ‘getting old’
It’s a common misconception: the older you get, the more frequently you need to use the bathroom at night. Did you know waking up more than once per night to urinate is a medical condition known as nocturia? Shockingly, 64 percent of American adults do not know. A recent Harris Poll of more than 2,000 U.S. adults, endorsed by The Simon Foundation for Continence, National Association for Continence (NAFC) and the Prostate Conditions Education Council (PCEC), found that approximately one-third of them suffer from nocturia. Feds Comply with Order to Stop Deporting TPS Holders
By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES – A small but important victory this week for people with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) who are fighting to stay in this country, after the federal government announced it will comply with a court order halting deportations until the lawsuit is done. The Trump administration terminated the TPS program earlier this year, a move that threatened to force more than 300,000 people to return to their home countries. Many TPS holders were granted the legal right to live and work in the United States decades ago and now, as a group, they have homes and hundreds of thousands

We are here to make this country better.” Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen has said TPS was meant to be temporary as its name suggests, so the government has the legal right to end it. Protest Period Opens for Proposed Greater Chaco Drilling By Desert Star Staff ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The federal government is proceeding with plans for a December auction of oil and gas drilling leases on thousands of acres of land in the Greater Chaco region. A comment period on the proposal opened today and will continue through October 31, despite a pending Senate bill that would protect the area, and without a cultural review and consultation promised by Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke. Miya KingFlaherty, organizer with the Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter, said the government
is violating its own procedures by not having a resource management plan in place. “They’re not following their own rules,” KingFlaherty said; “they’re really just rubber-stamping these drilling permits while not giving the thorough analysis that they are mandated to do.” New Mexico Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich have introduced legislation to protect the greater Chaco region. The bill, called the Chaco Cultural Heritage Area Protection Act, is backed by the All Pueblo Council of Governors and the Navajo Nation, which said the October 26, 2018
area has great significance to the state’s indigenous people and any disturbance would be “culturally and morally unacceptable.” Under the Trump administration, the oil and gas industry is once again booming in New Mexico. But King-Flaherty said it comes at a price - including diminished air quality, groundwater loss, a reduction in wildlife habitat and community health impacts. King-Flaherty added that any new drilling should take into account the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report that said without concerted
efforts to end reliance on fossil fuels, extreme climate disruption will increase significantly within 12 years. “I think more people are starting to be more aware of how oil and gas drilling is really exacerbating climate change and how this current administration is really rolling back regulations that have been put in place,” she said. The BLM is not accepting online comments, but rather protests must be submitted by mail or hand-delivered to the BLM state office in Santa Fe, and will only be considered valid if each parcel being protested is specially listed.

Southern Gothic Horror Play “The Sugar Witch”
By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) When Jim Strait and Paul Taylor, co-founders of the Desert Rose Playhouse in Rancho Mirage retired to the big island of Hawaii, they passed their leadership torch of running the only LGBTQ theatre serving the Coachella Valley to new artistic director Robbie Wayne and to new managing director Kam Sisco. Desert Rose Productions new producing team launched their first venture with a Southern Gothic horror tale titled, ”The Sugar Witch.” The play is hard to label. It begins as a bit of a comedy hoot, then shifts its tone and gears into a dark tale of murder, ghosts, and myths. It’s still the same Desert Rose Playhouse located at 69620 Highway 111 in Rancho Mirage, CA where Strait and Taylor successfully created and produced mainly gaythemed plays for six years. The quality and selection of plays under Wayne and Sisco productions appears to be on track to serve an even larger
audience, one that seeks to appeal to all valley theatregoers – gay and straight, while still remaining true to its original mission statement. “The Sugar Witch” story is set in the swampy environs of Florida, where the Bean family of Sugar Bean Florida live under an ancient family curse. The surviving members of the town’s founding family have finally reached the “tobacco road lifestyle” which can’t possibly get any worse. Then tragedy strikes in the form of a brutal murder that takes place in the Bean family home. The crime places “Moses Bean” (Jacob Samples) and his sister “Sisser” Bean (Leanna Rodgers) in grave danger as “Annabelle” (Kimberly Cole) the last in a long line of so-called ‘Sugar Witches’ attempts to end the curse placed on the heads of the surviving Bean family by the dying words of Annabelle’s very own grandmother. Dark family secrets are revealed, and unusual passions are ignited as the family confronts madness, truth, and the destructive legacy of racism as the spirit/ ghosts walk the dark swamps, haunting the hearts of all who reside there. Its Southern authors like William Faulkner,
James Dickey, Marilynne Robinson, and Attica Locke who relish writing this kind of backwoods mystery stories. “The Sugar Witch,” written by Nathan Sanders, is solidly directed by Robbie Wayne and stars Kimberly Cole as Annabelle. Ms. Cole delivers a riveting, steely-eyed, fascinating, performance as the Sugar Witch. Leanna Rodgers as “Sisser” renders a nice inthe-moment-portrayal, of a damaged woman with reality issues. Jacob Samples as Moses Bean brings an honest quality of a man looking out for his sister while trying to come to grips with his inner emotions; trying to live by the law. April Mejia (Ruth Ann Meeks, Kelly Peak as Hank Hartley and Tim McIntosh as Brother Meeks offer solid support. The creative team led by director Robbie Wayne includes a wonderfully creative set by designer Toby Griffin. The normally tiny stage at Desert Rose is turned into a splendid swamp and house that gives one the immediate feeling of being in rural Florida. Kudos also go to Lighting Designer Phil Murphy who paints the set in mood inducing lights Tim McIntosh also benefit that enhance the creepiness from Murphy’s lighting plot. of the action taking place “The Sugar Witch” on stage. By Desert Star Staff When it’s time to take on a new project, both DIY-inclined homeowners and contractors alike must consider many components to successfully complete the task, from design plans and materials to the proper tools needed. For simple projects like installing new light fixtures as well as more complicated projects such as refurbishing an outdated bathroom, power tools can be helpful throughout the process. Once all the items on the checklist are accounted for and there’s a plan in place, the next step to consider is an important one: safety. While obvious concepts like electrical safety are typically followed without hesitation, some crucial details don’t receive the same caution, such as safe handling of batteries. Many cordless power tools use lithium-ion batteries for improved efficiency, energy storage capacity, durability, versatility and portability, but they need to be handled properly. Prior to operating a battery-powered tool, consider these tips from the experts at the Power Tool Institute, a leading voice on power tool safety issues and standards for the industry. Selection and Use: • Lithium-ion batteries pack more energy than prior
technologies, which means they can do more work, but there’s also greater potential for damage when misused. • Batteries are not interchangeable, so it’s important to only use batteries and chargers from the original power tool manufacturer. • Original manufacturer batteries are engineered to communicate and work with specific tools and chargers. These components, as a system, also go through a rigorous certification and testing process – a requirement that doesn’t typically apply to third-party batteries. • Substandard aftermarket and counterfeit batteries may come with additional hazards that result in fire, property damage or personal injury. • If a battery is damaged, do not use it. • Never immerse your tool, battery pack or charger in fluid or allow a fluid to enter it, including corrosive or conductive fluids, such as seawater, certain industrial chemicals and bleach or products containing bleach. Fluid entry can increase the chances of short-circuiting, which comes with risks of overheating, fire or explosion that can lead to personal injury and property damage. Transportation and Disposal:
• Always transport and store lithium-ion batteries as instructed in the owner’s manual. • Avoid contact with metal objects, such as keys, coins, screws, nails and liquids. • When disposing a lithium-ion battery, take it to a local recycling center or place it in a receptacle designed for batteries. Throwing it away in the trash or municipal recycling can cause a fire hazard. For more safe battery practices, including use, storage and disposal, visit takechargeofyourbattery. com. Family Features

A Spellbinding “Dear Evan Hansen” on Stage Continued from Page 1
the understudy in the New York production. His portrayal of Evan as an extremely maladjusted teenager who is more comfortable being on his computer than interacting with his classmates. is nothing short of spine tingling. This amazing young actor has mined the myriad complexities of his character, not only the organic vocal stuttering, but imbued his body with all the tics and mannerisms that go with such a neurotic, jittery person. It would have been easy to layer on some of his quirky body gestures but this actor’s physicalization clearly grew out of the deepest recesses of his character’s psyche and one can feel the painful struggle Evan goes through on a daily basis. The story begins rather innocently. Evan has been assigned by his therapist to write a letter to himself, and he begins it with, “Dear Evan Hansen” and signs it “Me.” In the meantime, one of his classmates, Connor Murphy, well played and sung by Marrick Smith, commits suicide and through a bizarre set of circumstances the letter morphs into Connor’s farewell note and is now in the hands of his grieving parents. Except for one brief encounter, where Connor scribbled his name across Evan’s arm cast, that was the only time they spoke to each other. The dead boy’s “ghost” reappears through the tangled web of deceit and sings “Sincerely, Me” with Evan and Jared. The grieving parents, Larry and Cynthia Murphy, sympathetically played by Aaron Lazar and Christiane Noll, want to know about Evan’s friendship with their son and thus begins a series of well-intentioned tales. They are convinced that their son and Evan were best friends and asked if they had emailed each other and could they see copies. Evan enlists the help of his best friend Jared Kleinman, wonderfully played by Jared Goldsmith, who becomes his partner in creating the non-existent emails between Evan and Connor. From total strangers, Evan is slowly morphing into Connor’s best friend and with the help of Jared, false narratives are created. The parents become very attached to their son’s best friend and soon he has meals at their home and develops a crush on their daughter Zoe, excellently played by Maggie McKenna. around her. He sings the lovely ballad “If I Could Tell Her.” I should mention that Ross’ voice is powerful and has that magical ability of going from his middle range to almost an octave above without a vocal break. Some of his solos are gut wrenching in their innate sadness. The myth begins to take on a life of its own and the whole thing has gone viral. Soon, a fan club has formed, with Alana Beck (Phoebe Koyabe) and Evan acting as co-presidents. Buttons, tea shirts, and wrist bands with Connor’s image are being sold, a foundation is set up in the dead student’s honor, and a run-down orchard that Evan said he and Connor visited, becomes a cause célèbre to restore and funds are pouring in from all over the country. One lie after another compounds the last lie and soon Evan is swimming in so many lies that he almost forgets what’s real. This fantasy has given him a new family that loves and cares about him, something that is sorely lacking in his life as his mother, well played and sung by Jessica Phillips as his mother Heidi, is absent most of the time, forgetting commitments to her son to the point that she really doesn’t know anything about him, other than he has to take pills to keep his neurosis under control. As Evan’s fake narrative advances, his need for psychotropic drugs disappears. There is one particularly poignant scene where Connor’s dad gives Evan his son’s unused catcher’s mitt and shows him how to break it in. They sing the ballad “To Break in a Glove.” Conner’s parents are now so attached to Evan that they want to give him the money they saved for their son’s college. Evan’s mom is furious and storms out of their home. Eventually she sings “So Big/So Small.” As you might guess, eventually, the lies begin to unravel and what happens will surprise you. Besides the talented cast of singers and dancers, what is also fascinating about this production are the compelling production values. The theme of a modern-day musical begins with David Korins’ fabulous scenic design but it is Peter Nigrini’s fascinating projections that gives the production such a contemporary look. Hundreds of extraordinary overlapping images of the chatter taking place on social media fill the back wall sometimes illuminating how a lie on social media can impact thousands

By Desert Star Staff US President Donald Trump scolded Saudi Arabia for journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s murder and badly executed cover-up, calling it a “total fiasco from day one,” while still hedging on condemning the Saudi government. Trump has been under tremendous pressure both at home and internationally to issue a stark rebuke to Riyadh over the murder of the Washington Post columnist inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul. Three weeks after the journalist disappeared, the details of his killing are still murky, and the cause of his death is unknown. Saudi officials have come up with shaky explanations for Khashoggi’s demise, first stating that he was killed accidentally in a fistfight and then alleging a “rogue operation” unbeknownst to the Saudi rulers
“There should have never been an execution or a coverup, because it should have never happened,” Trump told reporters on Tuesday. I would say it was a total fiasco from day one. In an attempt to criticize the Khashoggi murder without criticizing Riyadh, Trump worded his statement to almost sound like he was unhappy with how the killing and the subsequent cover-up was executed. The US finally rolled out a set of punitive measures against Riyadh on Tuesday. The punishment is very selective and will affect only 21 Saudi individuals the US State Department believes were involved in the killing. They will be denied entry to the US, either having their visas revoked or being made ineligible for applying. “Bad deal, should have never been thought of.

About Pickleball Three dads invented pickleball in 1965 as a way to entertain their children during the summer. The families resided on Bainbridge Island, Washington. Congressman Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum fashioned handmade equipment and based the simple rules on the real sports of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. Unlike Tennis, Racquetball and many other sports, Pickleball has a short learning curve; you don’t need months of lessons to participate in a fun game. It also is less running compared to Tennis.
However, at the same time, it can be very competitive and addicting for all ages, as well as an excellent, fun family activity. Pickleball can be played as both singles and doubles game, and can be played inside or outdoors, on a court that uses the dimension of a doubles badminton court, along with a modified tennis net. A Pickleball court is 20’ x 44’ for both singles and doubles. The net is hung at 36” at the ends and hangs 34” in the middle. A non-volley zone – called the Kitchen - extends 7’ back from the net on each side.
Somebody really messed up. And they had the worst coverup ever,” Trump said earlier. There have been persistent calls for Trump to terminate multi-billion-dollar arms deals
with Saudi Arabia, including from within his own party. However, the US leader seems to believe Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, with whom Trump spoke on
Tuesday. The prince, Trump said, told him that he had no knowledge of the planning of the murder, an assertion that is being increasingly questioned.
Saudi handling of Khashoggi murder was ‘a total fiasco’ - Trump
