Beer, Water & Fire, ‘Cheers’ OktoberForest Highlights Source of Beer’s Main Ingredient By Desert Star Staff FORT COLLINS, Colo. – October means beer festivals in many corners of the globe, and in Colorado several local breweries have banded with The Nature Conservancy to create OktoberForest (Not October Fest), a campaign to help keep the state’s

water supplies clean. Corey Odell, sustainability coordinator for the Odell Brewing Co., has been organizing events in the company’s Fort Collins tap room to help beer fans see the critical link between trees and their beloved porters, IPAs and pilsners.

“Forest health equates to water quality, and water quality equates to good beer,” she states. “Protecting the forest is, of course, more than just about beer. It’s also a great place for anyone to interact with nature.” Odell says America’s forests provide more than

‘Cyber hurricane’ poised to strike as malware infects millions

By Desert Star Staff Cybersecurity experts warn “the next cyber hurricane is about to come” as millions of Internet of Things devices have been infected with Reaper malware that could take down the internet. “Our research suggests we are now experiencing the calm before an even more powerful storm,” Check Point Software said, adding that it doesn’t know how the code will be employed or the extent of the damage it could cause. Reaper, or IoTrooper, is a massive zombie robotic network, or botnet, that is rapidly infecting millions of Internet of Things devices, including webcams, video recorders and security cameras. Netlab 360 warned

Reaper is “actively expanding” and that there are “millions of potential vulnerable device IPs being queued” into the system which will be injected with the malicious code. MIRAI: The botnet was first discovered in mid-September, and is based on the source code for the Mirai botnet that attacked websites with denialof-distribution (DDoS) attacks last October. The attack spread to more than 164 countries and companies affected included Netflix, Twitter, Amazon, CNN and Spotify. The source of the code remains unknown but Reaper has improved on Mirai as “about 100 different functions” have been added to the code. “It has the potential to reach many, many more devices,” Check

Point’s Maya Horowitz said. REAPER: Reaper works by exploiting existing vulnerabilities in devices and injecting them with malicious code that can be used at a later stage to carry out an attack. By taking advantage of vulnerabilities, the device can be infiltrated without raising any alarms. The malware then spreads from infected devices to others, like a worm. Perhaps the most worrying aspect of Reaper is that no-one can figure out what the botnet will be used for, as it has the ability to run complex attacks. “It could be something that’s meant to create global chaos,”Horowitz said. “But it could be something that’s more targeted.”

New Earthquake-Monitoring System Tracks Texas Tremors

something they worry about out in California, but Texas officials have just installed a

seismic monitoring network to study the frequency and intensity of earthquake activity across the state. The Texas Bureau of Economic Geology’s TexNet project will pinpoint and analyze the increasing number of tremors, which many believe are caused by oil and gas activity. Texas State Geologist Scott Tinker, director of the bureau, said the need for a statewide network has grown rapidly in the past decade. “When earthquakes started happening in places where they hadn’t happened before,” he said, “the Legislature, industry and regulators and academics said, ‘Hey, it’d be nice to get in front of these, potentially, and get a network in place, and get some baselines set and study them.’ “ October 27, 2017

The system has 22 permanent stations and 40 mobile monitors that can be positioned in areas of high activity. When an earthquake occurs in Texas, TexNet will report its strength and location, along with other information. Tinker said Texas quakes, once rare, have increased from about one a year to more than 40 since 2010. Scott Anderson, senior policy director for the Environmental Defense Fund, said many geologists suspect waste oil injection and fracking at petroleum rigs are the reason for higher numbers of Texas quakes. “This is also driven indirectly by the experience in Oklahoma, which has had a truly massive increase in earthquakes in the last few years, most of which are believed to be induced by

oil and gas activity,” he said. Compared with Oklahoma or California, which see hundreds of quakes a year some at magnitude 5 or stronger – the shakers in Texas are mostly just a nuisance, Tinker said. “So, when you get an earthquake with a magnitude 2.5 or 3.0, which is still kind of relatively large for Texas,” he said, “people wouldn’t even quit reading the paper or having a cocktail in California.” He said TexNet, the only statewide seismic network in the country, will be studied by researchers at the University of Texas-Austin, Southern Methodist University, Texas A&M and the Southwest Research Institute. The public also can access seismic data and reports from the TexNet website, beg.utexas.edu/texnet.

There was a lot of diversity in the art shown which brought many people thru the front door to see. This was one of the largest Gallery Shows I have photographed. There was a steady stream of art lovers coming thru the door all night.

The walls were filled with a lot of hand selected photography. Local photographer Greg Felsen was one of the major artists displaying his photos. There was one of Carol Channing with a group of people, A photo of Vincent Van Gogh’s headstone at his gravesite and several photos from other countries. The photos of his antique cars drew a lot of attention along with local scenes. Colin Fisher showed some of his fabulous work

that consists of Americana of long ago. His photos were in a small room in the middle of the Gallery. There is a large room as you enter with photographs on all the walls. There is the smaller area in the entry and another room with photographs toward the back of the entry way. Colin’s refreshments were served in the middle of the studio and the back room held appetizers of meats, crackers, shrimp, dips and cookies. Felsen had photo of a Robot hanging

New on DVD: ‘Baby Driver’ and ‘The Big Sick’

This past Wednesday my husband and I decided to chill out with two new DVDs. Much to my surprise, I really, really enjoyed “Baby Driver” with Ansel Elgort in the title role. This movie will give you an adrenalin rush as Baby, yes, that is his first name, drives the getaway cars for the robbers who work for an Atlanta crime boss played by Kevin Spacey. Edgar Wright, the British writer/director (“Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz: and “The World’s End”) has blended unbelievable high-speed chases with romance and thrilling shoot-outs in an exciting action-packed film set to music which is integral to

the story right from the start. Baby is a likeable young man who was orphaned at an early age when his parents were killed in a car accident. Now in his early twenties he lives with his disabled foster father played by deaf actor CJ Jones. He loves the old man and takes good care of him--making sure his sandwiches have the peanut butter spread evenly to every edge of the bread. He also speaks to him in fluent sign language. It is clear that they share a loving bond. Baby has tinnitus, a constant ringing in his ears. To get rid of the sounds he wears headphones and drives

to the beat of his own music--and oh can he drive. He goes at amazing speeds, makes death defying turns and lane changes so well and so fast the police can’t keep up with him. For Spacey, Baby is his lucky charm. One day as Baby is eating in a 1950s style diner, an adorable waitress named Debora (Lily James from TV’s “Downton Abbey” and Disney’s “Cinderella”) passes by singing. Soon they talk about music and in no time a very romantic spark is ignited. Spacey holds Baby in high regard as a driver and even though Baby says very little he catches on to everything

Who killed JFK? The various theories behind the Kennedy assassination By Desert Star Staff Just hours ahead of the disclosure of classified documents on one of the defining moments of 20thcentury US history – the assassination of President John F. Kennedy – RT takes a look at some of the main theories regarding what really happened. Ever since John F. Kennedy was gunned down by Lee Harvey Oswald on November 22, 1963 while visiting Dallas, Texas, there has been endless speculation around the circumstances of the 46-year-old’s death. Here, we take a look at what different people say happened on that tragic day. Lone wolf – the official version Following the tragic event, the Warren Commission was set up by President Lyndon B. Johnson to shed light on Kennedy’s murder. In 1964, the commission concluded that Kennedy was killed by a lone assassin – former US Marine Lee Harvey Oswald.

The shooter fired three shots from a sixthfloor window in the Texas School Book Depository and two bullets reached his target – President Kennedy – and wounded Texas Governor John Connally, who was travelling in the car with Kennedy. Although the Warren Commission concluded that Oswald was not part of any conspiracy, the findings were criticized for allegedly ignoring some witness accounts and for the fact that the CIA and FBI, who assisted the investigation, withheld some information. A second shooter? Over a decade later, Kennedy’s death was once again investigated – this time by the US House of Representatives Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA). Established in 1976, the committee issued its final report in 1979, which agreed with the Warren Commission’s findings, though it added there was a “high probability” that

two gunmen fired at Kennedy. The HSCA also found that Kennedy was “probably assassinated as the result of a conspiracy,” although it did not go into details. Communist conspiracies It’s no secret that Oswald visited the Soviet Union and attempted to obtain citizenship due to his Marxist beliefs. After being denied, however, he grew disillusioned with the USSR, which seems to have provided the grounds for alleged Soviet involvement in Kennedy’s assassination. Several months before the assassination, Oswald reportedly visited the Cuban and Soviet embassies in Mexico to re-apply for a Soviet visa, but failed. Amid speculation of a US plot to kill Cuban leader Fidel Castro, this added fuel to the theory that Oswald colluded with the Cuban government to kill Kennedy. This was dismissed by the Warren Commission, however, with the report stating that neither the

Soviet Union nor Cuba were “involved in the assassination of President Kennedy.” CIA conspiracy As tensions with communist Cuba continued to grow, the CIA attempted to oust Castro, which included their ill-fated Bay of Pigs operation. Despite Oswald having no connections with the CIA, according to the Warren Commission and the HSCA, some theories emerged claiming that the agency wanted revenge for the failed operation, which it blamed on Kennedy, and for the president’s alleged plan to cut its budget. Often presented as “proof” is the fact that CIA agent E. Howard Hunt and US soldier Frank Anthony Sturgis were among three men, also known as the “three tramps,” spotted in photographs being escorted by police near the Texas School Book Depository. Hunt was involved in the Bay of Pigs operation, while

Sturgis was an anti-Castro activist. Others says that Oswald himself was a CIA agent, although this, and the involvement of Hunt and Sturgis, was also dismissed by the Warren Commission. Umbrella man Witnesses spotted what they said was a “suspicious” man holding an umbrella as Kennedy’s motorcade was driving by, despite it being a clear, sunny day. One theory is that ‘umbrella man’ fired a tranquilizer at the president, signaling to the shooter to fire the kill shot. The man was later identified as Louie Steven Witt, who explained that the umbrella was a form of protest aimed at Kennedy’s father Joseph, and his support for British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. Chamberlain, who was known for carrying an umbrella, was seen as “appeasing Hitler” in the lead-up to World War II, and Joseph Kennedy supported Chamberlain.

Beer, Water & Fire, ‘Cheers’ Continued from Page 1 2000, because of warmer and drier conditions. He notes that without proper management, forests become denser, which is one reason wildfires have become so intense that after the smoke clears, there are frequently no trees left to hold down the soil. “The soil then has a lot of trouble, especially here in Colorado, staying put on these steep slopes,” he explains. “So the next time it rains, all the sediment and

the material and everything else ends up down in the streams and then moving down in the reservoirs.” Lawhon says bigger fires also cost more to fight, and once containment budgets have been tapped, money has been diverted from prevention budgets, which Lawhon says increases the chances of repeating a dangerous cycle. He says his group and brewers across the nation are hoping Congress will pass the Wildfire Disaster Funding Act, legislation they say would help make sure forests are less fire-prone in the first place.

Steve Martin & Edie Brickell’s “Bright Star” Shining at the Ahmanson

Much to the delight of an enthusiastic audience, this spirited Bluegrass orchestra kicks off Act 2 with foot-stomping, hand-clapping music. Photo by Craig Schwartz Kick me for being sentimental, but in view of the emotional bashings we are receiving daily in America 2017, Steve Martin’s foot-stomping Bluegrass musical score, along with his old fashion fairy tale love story, with music and lyrics by Edie Brickell, is a welcome respite from our daily strife. Martin is an accomplished banjo player, which is reflected in the Bluegrass, banjo-driven score. It’s happy music that reveals the narrative as sung by the gifted principal actors. Hokey? Sentimental? Maybe. But one might ask why “hokey” or “sentimental” is critically scorned. So, if the words, “once upon a time” are not your cup of tea, and you cannot believe that a frog can be turned into a prince with a simple kiss, or one shoe can change Cinderella’s destiny, then this outright down-home, old fashion musical is not for you. On the other hand, if you are willing to suspend your disbelief and go along for this musical ride, then you will have an enjoyable experience that will make you laugh and yes, you will even shed a few tears. To the story: Under the skillful direction of Walter Bobbie, the action takes place in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and spans two decades – one 1945-1946, the other 22 years earlier. At rise, it’s 1923 and we hear the opening number, “If You Knew My Story,” sung by the character of Alice Murphy, played by an amazing Carmen Cusack, a powerful combination of Tammy Wynette and Dolly Parton. Her clear as a bell, emotional voice soars easily into the higher registers as well as giving full value to her midrange. Alice is ambitious, loves literature, and is strong willed. When asked by her father if she was questioning the lord, she replies: “I’m not questioning the lord, but sometimes my ideas are better.” The young Alice falls in love with Jimmy Ray Dobbs,

beautifully played by Patrick Cummings, and they well, make a baby. When Jimmy Ray finds out, he’s ecstatic and wants to marry Alice. So as not to bring shame upon his family, Jimmy Ray’s father, Mayor Josiah Dobbs, played with just the right amount of obnoxious bullying by Jeff Austin, insists that Jimmy’s life would be ruined if he married her and forces Alice to be hidden away in a cabin in the woods. When the baby boy is born, in an act of unspeakable cruelty, Dobbs implores her father, played by Stephen Lee Anderson, to sign a document, which would put the child up for adoption. Don’t forget this is the puritanical Bible Belt so against his daughter and wife’s (Allison Briner-Dardenne) protests, her father agrees to sign the document and the child is ripped out of Alice’s arms. We now fast forward to 1945. Billy Cane, played by a talented A.J. Shively, is back from World War II. The first thing he does is to visit his childhood friend Margo, played by lovely Maddie Shea Baldwin. She works in a library where someone just returned a thesaurus because he thought it was a book on dinosaurs. Billy is impressed with how beautiful she is but they are not quite ready to show their long simmering affection for each other. A devotee of Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald, Billy wrote a number of manuscripts and is determined to become a successful writer. He tells Margo he is going to Asheville where he hoped to be published in the prestigious The Asheville Southern Journal. There he meets with the editor, a grownup Alice Murphy, who catches him in a lie about a letter he supposedly received from a famous writer. She informs him that the writer actually died ten years before the date of his letter. He shrugs it off saying he’s just trying to get

noticed. After reading his work, Alice recognizes his talent and hands him a check for $10 as payment for one of his stories, which she doesn’t intend to publish. She tells him to experience life and write. She mentions to her associate Daryl Ames, played by a very amusing Jeff Blumenkrantz, that the young writer: “Is a liar and that could make him a good writer.” Jeff keeps secretly submitting scripts under a nonde-plume with most of them ending up in the “circular file.” Meanwhile, back in the mountains, Jimmy Ray’s father, who has forbidden his son to ever see Alice again, keeps trying to introduce him to proper young women who come from wealthy families. He explains that Billy must marry one of those eligible young ladies to keep the business going. Billy will have none of it and decides to go to Asheville to see if he can find his baby. Alice has never given up on her search but keeps hitting dead ends. Now old and sick, Billy’s father tells him that he will never find the baby because, well, think “Throw Momma From the Train,” and that will give you an idea of the despicable act

committed by his father and where the story might go from there. The handbag scene in “The Importance of Being Earnest” might give you a clue. The technical aspects of “Bright Star” are pitch perfect from Eugene Lee’s scenic design and Japhy Weideman’s lighting design to Jane Greenwood’s colorful period costumes, and Nevin Steinberg’s sound design. Working with a talented cast of singers and dancers, the choreography by Josh Rhodes was at times quite original and ranged from a fox trot to a spirited jitterbug. One couldn’t help comparing the hoedown sequences to Agnes de Mille’s work in “Oklahoma.” Even though they fit within the context of a particular scene, those movements did lack originality. The narrative Bluegrass musical score, played with gusto by the orchestra under the

music direction and conducting by Anthony de Angelis, includes such songs as “Bright Star,” “Way Back in the Day,” “A Man’s Gotta Do,” “I Had a Vision,” and “At Long Last.” All the musicians are talented but a stand-out performance was given by Martha McDonnell, whose soulful violin solos punctuated the sometimes sadness of a scene as well as aiding in scene transitions. “Bright Star” is an oldfashioned, rather sentimental story so you have to be willing to accept it on its own merits. If you do, you will love the fairy tale ending, “And they all lived happily ever after.” Ahmanson Theatre 135 N.
