By Desert Star Staff One of the leading voices of the #MeToo movement, actress Asia Argento, has rolled back on her previous claims and now admits that she slept with Jimmy Bennett, who has accused her of sexually assaulting him when he was 17. The Italian actress previously denied having intercourse with her co-star, although she is believed to have paid Bennett a $380,000 settlement after he alleged that they had sex in a California hotel room in 2013. However, the actress revealed another version of their relationship during a TV show on Sunday, insisting that then-17-
year-old literally “jumped” on her. “He undressed me, put me sideways on the bed, climbed onto me and had complete sex without even using a condom,” Argento told the host. She said that her former co-star told her that he had been sexually attracted to her “since he was 12 years old.” The U-turn in Argento’s position comes after the now22-year-old Bennett appeared on the same TV show and contradicted her version of events. He claimed that it was then 37-year-old actress who pushed him onto the bed and took off his pants, after which they “had sex.”
The actor himself has faced sexual misconduct accusations from an underage girlfriend in the past, the Daily Beast revealed, citing documents. The girl also reportedly claimed that the actor had stalked and threatened her. Despite the actress repeatedly denying the accusations, the scandal resulted in her axing from the Italian X Factor, and also triggered a rift with her #MeToo ally Rose McGowan. Argento was one of the first to speak out against Hollywood movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, who has been further accused by dozens of women.

2018 American Humane Hero Veterinarian/Nurse Awards By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES, - Top dogs were not the only honorees Saturday night at the eighth annual American Humane Hero Dog Awards®. America’s first national humane organization also honored a couple of human beings – with the American Humane Hero Veterinarian and Hero Veterinary Nurse Awards™, presented by Zoetis Petcare, a U.S. business unit of Zoetis. After a nationwide search and tens of thousands of public votes, Dr. David Chico from Albany, New York, was named 2018’s American Hero Veterinarian, and Tammy Boland from Oceanport, New Jersey, was declared 2018’s American Hero Veterinary Nurse. They received their awards during a special ceremony onstage at the Beverly Hilton during the Hero Dog Awards gala, which will be broadcast nationally October 24 on Hallmark Channel. The American Humane Hero Veterinarian and Hero Veterinary Nurse Awards were born out of the idea that behind almost every hero pet (and millions more animals) is a hero vet or veterinary nurse. These often-little-known benefactors save and improve the lives of our two- and fourlegged best friends in many ways, and it is time to honor their achievements. Hundreds of worthy nominees were considered by a special blueribbon panel of celebrities and renowned veterinary and animal care professionals. After narrowing down the field to the top five in each category, the American public
made the final determination through online voting. 2018 American Hero Veterinarian: Dr. David Chico Throughout his extraordinary career, David Chico, VMD, MPH has been committed to the betterment of the health and well-being of animals, fostering the important human-animal bond. Ten years ago, Dr. Chico created a free quarterly Pet Wellness Clinic in partnership with Albany Damien Center’s PAWS (Pets Are Wonderful Support) program to provide veterinary care to lowincome, HIV+ pet owners. As part of his continued support, he answers emergency calls at all hours and makes house calls for those too ill to visit the clinic. Dr. Chico also volunteers with Animals Lebanon in Beirut, providing life-saving care to severely abused and neglected animals. He has worked on animal cruelty cases in the U.S. as well, assisting with several large dog-fighting and neglect cases. Dr. Chico improves the lives of all those he touches, human and animal alike. 2018 American Humane Hero Veterinary Nurse Tammy Boland Tammy Boland of Oceanport, New Jersey, has gone above and beyond the call of duty to save hundreds of dogs over the last 11 years, through her non-profit Pick Your Paw Animal Rescue. Tammy networks with some of the busiest shelters in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, where she pulls the most atrisk dogs: seniors, those with medical needs and pit bulls. Through her work, she has

The audience will even be split into two teams and everyone will cheer on their team of dogs during the “Golden Bone Showdown.” The trick dog challenge will be judged and won by audience applause, and the athletic challenges will be won based on speed, accuracy, and leaping ability. From world class Frisbee catching dogs, the three sport stunt dog triathlon, weave pole racing, to the famous high-jumping phenomenon, you will be blown away by the most agile dogs in the world! These stars have been featured on Oprah Winfrey, David Letterman, “The Tonight Show,” “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” Queen Latifah, Animal Planet’s “Pet Stars,” worldwide during the annual Rose Parade, “The The Stunt Dog GuyTM truly CBS Early Show,” and much delivers a theater masterpiece more. send communications via email to the homeowner, and amends Civil 4360 to require 28 days (instead of the current 30) notice to homeowners for proposed rule changes. SB 721 - HOAs exempted. SB 721 requires multilevel residential properties to conduct inspections of balconies and other elevated elements every six years. Signed into law by the Governor on September 17, the final version of the bill exempts HOAs from its requirements. SB 1016 - Time of Usage (“TOU”) Meters. SB 1016, signed by the Governor on September 13, adds a new Section 4745.1 to the Civil Code, protecting the installation of TOU meters for electric vehicle charging stations. HOAs may impose reasonable requirements on the requesting owner. AB 2912- New Association Financial Requirements. AB 2912 requires boards to
review the HOA financials monthly instead of the current quarterly requirement. The new law, approved by the Governor on September 14, requires all HOAs to have fidelity (dishonesty) insurance in place. It also requires documentation of board authority for expenditures over $10,000 or 5% of the HOA’s budget, whichever is lower. SB 1128 and 1265 vetoed. Two of the most troubling bills for California HOAs this year were Senate Bills 1128 and 1265. SB 1265 would have made it much harder for common interest development associations to preserve elections if technical errors occurred, and would have outlawed the ability of association members to adopt reasonable board eligibility standards. SB 1128 originally made some technical and sensible changes to the Davis-Stirling Act, but late in the legislative process was amended, adding the
harmful content of SB 1265. On Sunday September 30, Governor Brown vetoed both SB 1128 and SB 1265 with identical veto messages stating in part that each bill “takes a once-size-fits-all (sic) approach, but not all homeowner associations are alike” and adding “If changes to an election process are needed, they should be resolved by the members of that specific community.” The election procedures from Civil Code 5100-5135 are complicated, applying to all HOAs regardless of size, and necessitate guidance from experienced and qualified managers and legal counsel. HOAs still should consider adopting reasonable board eligibility requirements to make sure associations are governed by the best available volunteers. A few other technical bills were passed correcting typos, addressing housing density requirements, and
timeshares, but will not affect most associations already in operation. To review California law or legislation, the official site is www.leginfo.legislature.ca.gov. By Janice Gough Some baby boomers may worry about how long their assets will keep the roof over their head. They may be short on regular assets, short on retirement account assets, short on defined benefit pensions, short on Social Security benefits, and, unfortunately long on paying taxes. Boomers have but one option to maintain their living standards — earn more by working more at their jobs, delaying retirement, or returning to work if they have already retired. This is far easier said than done. Hour constraints at their current positions, age discrimination, increasing preference for leisure, and health limitations are four significant factors that limit older workers’ abilities and desire. Since the average inflation runs 3 percent per year, one must target earning a higher percentage than 3% to keep their standard of living going forward. Having your working capital working for you is essential. However, you may also be at that period in your life, that taking risks on investing your savings, could wipe that amount out leaving you in a worse position. Thus, you need to use the right tool for your investment portion of your savings. Invest in safe plans which are tax efficient and may cover the “What If’s” in life, such as Long-Term Care, Accidents, or Critical Illness. These benefits can be included in an Equity Index Annuity or Equity Indexed Life Insurance. Start by making your profit and loss statement.
Examine every expense and cut wherever you can. Those savings need to be working for you now. By determining the portion that you need for emergency funds, you can place that money in a higher interests account. Indeed, you want your plan to be set up to pay off debt. Consider the credit cards offering “0” percent interest for as long a period that you can find, and then set up automatic payments from your checking account every month, so when the period is up, you have paid back every dollar. It is crucial that you do not miscalculate as even owing one dollar, can recall the high-interest rate for that entire period. A friend said to me recently, that, with all of her possessions, she could start her shoe, hat, clothing and jewelry store. She then purchased more of those things! We have made shopping addiction, and many of us need financial therapy. If she started downsizing, she could make a few hundred dollars a month to add to retirement funds. Access where your health is currently and commit yourself to do what it takes to stay younger, and capable
of working. You cannot wait until it is difficult to walk or drive to start a good health regime. You may need that part-time job down the road to help you get by. If you own a home where taxes are high, such as they are in California, consider selling while the market is high and using your IRS 1038 Starker exchange to avoid paying capital gains tax and moving to a state with more affordable housing and lower taxes. The equity you have in your home may help you to own a new home without a mortgage. And by saving on State Taxes, you may add that savings to your retirement account. Your insurance and property tax may be less, also. Healthcare costs will continue to rise. If you currently have a Medicare Supplement plan, consider switching on the Annual Enrollment Period to a Medicare Advantage Plan (in our area a “0” Premium plan). Advantage plans are HMO plans, and our area offers good networks of doctors. This could cut $300 a month or more from current expenses. Also, avoid going to the Emergency Room if you can and chose an Immediate Care Facility,
in a network. E.R. can cost a lot unless they admit you. When you start taking Social Security, avoid mistakes. By waiting until Age 70. You can build your benefit by 8% each year. Unless you are in poor health or struggling financially, delay SS as long as possible. It is important also to understand the new tax law and what income bracket you fall into. It is wiser to pay estimated monthly payments, than end up with a bill that will put you behind. When you are ahead of the game, you experience less stress. Now is the time to make every dollar work for you and not against your longterm stability. Contact us for a complimentary Tax Guide, and for any help, you need with establishing your Long-Term plan.

Senate Vote Expected on Money to Fix National Parks
By Desert Star Staff LANSING, Mich. — A U.S. Senate committee could vote as soon as Tuesday on a measure that could inject billions of dollars into national
parks across the nation, including those in Michigan. If passed, the Restore Our Parks Act would approve up to $6.5 billion over five years to be used to address
the $11.6 billion maintenance backlog at national parks. Wayne Aylsworth is a trustee for the Village of Empire, and he said nearby Sleeping Bear Dunes National
Lakeshore has almost $18 million in needed repairs. “When you have a million-and-a-half plus [visitors] coming up here, the infrastructures that are needed are key,” Aylsworth said. “It’s getting to be very outdated; the restrooms need to be brought back up to date. National Parkowned roads need further maintenance as well.” In total, Michigan’s five national parks needed $54 million in 2017 for deferred maintenance. Marcia Argust, director of the Restore America’s Parks Campaign at The Pew Charitable Trusts, said with 2.7 million visitors every year, Michigan’s national parks are the backbone of many local economies. “In Michigan, where Senator Stabenow sits on the Senate committee that will soon consider the Restore
By Desert Star Staff CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Hunting, fishing and wildlife watching on Bureau of Land Management lands generate more than $3 billion in economic activity annually, according to a new Southwick Associates study. The report is the first to document how these specific activities across 12 western states support tens of thousands of jobs and generate significant local and state tax revenues. Joy Bannon, policy director for the Wyoming Wildlife Federation, says
these longstanding outdoor traditions don’t just benefit local communities and the state financially. “As an outdoors woman and mom of two small children, the BLM lands offer millions of acres of open space, angling opportunities, camping spots and hunting adventures that increase our quality of life here in Wyoming,” she points out. In Wyoming, more than 2,600 jobs accounting for more than $88 million in salaries and wages are supported by wildlife related recreation on
public BLM lands. Those activities also generate $331 million in sales and add $24 million to state and local tax coffers. The Trump administration has prioritized energy development on public lands in order to achieve what it calls energy dominance. Bannon says the report shows how managing public lands for multiple uses can pay economic dividends. Rob Southwick, president of Southwick Associates, the firm conducting the study, says outdoor recreation is a steady and stable source of
economic activity, unlike the historically “boom and bust” cycles of energy development. Since the recreation occurs in rural areas, Southwick says many Americans don’t see the economic activity generated. “So we know the typical trip generates, for a fishing trip, $290 per trip,” he points out. “Typical hunting trip on these lands generates $281 per trip. And wildlife viewing is $161 per trip, mainly based on less equipment demands for wildlife viewing, versus fishing and hunting, but still equally important.”
By Desert Star Staff HELENA, Mont. – Far from being a future threat, climate change already is making national parks hotter and the effects could get much worse, according to a first-of-its-kind study. Researchers went back to 1895 to chart temperatures and found they’re rising twice as fast in the country’s national parks as it they are in the rest of America. Patrick Gonzalez, a study co-author and climate change scientist at the University of California, Berkeley, says rising temperatures, unfortunately, have made Glacier National Park famous for its melting glaciers. While the study makes stunning predictions for parks in the future, he says Montana’s national parks are in the midst of climate change right now. “We don’t actually need to look just to the future,” he
states. “The high elevation national parks in the Pacific Northwest have already experienced substantial warming and impacts that have been detected and attributed to humancaused climate change.” Gonzalez notes that winter snowpack in the Pacific Northwest has fallen to its lowest levels in 800 years and that wildfires have doubled since 1985. The study says national parks often protect extreme environments, which are more susceptible to temperature rises. Gonzalez’s research predicts that if nothing is done to curb emissions, the country’s most vulnerable national parks could see average temperatures increase 16 degrees Fahrenheit by 2100. In places such as Montana, warmer temperatures could mean more infestations

Our Parks Act, park visitors spent over $230 million in local communities last year,” Argust said. “And parks generated over 3,400 jobs.” And while Congress hasn’t made a significant investment to upgrade national parks in 50 years, Argust said she’s optimistic this legislation will pass. “In a very polarized climate on Capitol Hill, this strong bipartisan support for this legislation will benefit park resources, protect recreation access, and continue to promote local economies,” she said. Beyond improving visitor safety, she noted the funding would preserve historic projects and buildings for future generations. Support for this reporting was provided by The Pew Charitable Trusts.
Southwick says wildlife related recreation deserves the same attention as any other major U.S. industry. In 2016, visits to western BLM lands resulted in over 3 million hunting trips, 2.8 million fishing trips and over 2 million trips to view wildlife. These activities generated more than $1 billion in salaries and wages, over 26,000 jobs, and $421 million in federal, state and local tax revenue. Support for this reporting was provided by The Pew Charitable Trusts.

He notes that results confirm that reducing carbon pollution from October 3, 2018
cars, power plants and other human sources can save parks from the most extreme heat. “Compared to the highest emission scenario, reduced emissions would lower the rate of heating in the national parks by two-thirds by the end of this century,” he points out. “And this reducing

5 Tips to Bring Your Home’s Wi-Fi ‘Dead Zones’ to life By Desert Star Staff Whether it’s to stream a movie from the bedroom or lock the front door using smart home technology, you’ve likely come to expect Wi-Fi to reach every corner of your house. The reality is that there are certain locations in many homes where Internet-connected devices and smartphones are unable to receive a steady Wi-Fi signal (or any signal at all) from the router. These sad places are called “dead zones.” “Dead zones typically include bathrooms, second and third story bedrooms, attics, basements, garages and back patios -- and they can drive everyone in the house absolutely crazy,” says Jeff Parker, the “Wi-Fi Guru,” and editor of the Milo Wi-Fi Blog, a source for practical advice, new products, and leading-edge technology dedicated to enhancing the Wi-Fi experience. So, given today’s basement-to-attic demand for Wi-Fi access, what is the most economical and effective
strategy for winning the battle against dead zones in your home? Parker offers five nocost/low-cost suggestions: 1. Keep your router away from metal. Objects such as mirrors, televisions, appliances or anything large made primarily of metal (i.e. decorative furniture, filing cabinets, even fish tanks!) have the potential to impair your network’s signal strength. If possible, move such items and your router apart. 2. Switch to a less crowded frequency. In living spaces like apartment buildings, too many broadcasting networks can interfere with each other and impact Wi-Fi quality. Because routers broadcast across two wireless frequency bands, 2.4 and 5 GHz, when one is too crowded it acts like a highway packed with cars. The good news is you can usually switch frequencies within your mobile device settings to use the less crowded channel. 3. Reboot regularly. Routers asked to complete many requests, such as handing out multiple IP
addresses to different devices and handling large downloads, can end up slowing down because of the heavy workload. You can think of rebooting your router as basically refreshing it and clearing any memory or stalled tasks. 4. Get the latest hardware. If you’re still using that dinosaur router from the early 2000s, it’s probably time for an upgrade. Outfitting your home with a smarter and more advanced
router could be the solution to your Wi-Fi woes, especially if your existing router is a very old model with limited capabilities. Internet service providers often provide router upgrades by request for no charge. 5. Consider a distributed mesh Wi-Fi system. For Wi-Fi that reaches farther, consider a mesh Wi-Fi system, which consists of a main router connected to a modem and a series of satellite Wi-Fi
Tips for Dealing With Damaged Hair
By Desert Star Staff Heat tools, color processing and even the simple act of brushing, can cause hair to lose its strength. Indeed, eight out of 10 women in the U.S. experience some form of damaged hair, according to an IPSOS Brand Health Study. But there’s good news, say experts. “You shouldn’t have to give up styling, coloring or all the things you love to do to your hair,” says Dr. Rocio Rivera, vice president and head of scientific communications at L’Oréal Paris. “You just need a solution that will repair and prevent the damage.” To revive your locks and protect them for the future, consider the following:
Treat Hair With Care: Stick to the routines that leave you feeling beautiful. Just be sure to complete these tasks with care, gently shampooing and conditioning hair, avoiding unnecessary friction on the hair fiber by using a wide tooth comb (or whatever style brush or comb your stylist recommends for your hair type), avoiding tugging when combing and brushing, and considering wearing your hair in styles, at least some of the time, that don’t pull. A gentler beauty regimen will mean healthier hair. Restorative Products: “Flat irons, curling irons, blow dryers -- these daily essentials that give women the short-term look they want, often lead to
long-term effects that cause real damage to the hair fiber,” notes Dr. Rivera. “Using a heat protectant before heat styling will prevent breakage and help hair remain strong.” Dr. Rivera recommends undoing the effects of heat styling as well as protecting hair from future damage with restorative products, such as those from the Elvive Total Repair 5 Collection. The collection includes Total Repair 5 Protein Recharge Leave-in, which is made with almonds and protein to restore protein loss in hair, offer 450 degree heat protection and make hair 15 times stronger for 97
percent less breakage. Also included is a rinse-out balm product that repairs up to one year of damage in one use, fighting the appearance of split ends, weakness, roughness, dullness and dehydration. To complete your hair repair routine, use shampoos and conditioners tailored to your needs. This collection’s shampoo and conditioner, for example, are made from a formula containing ceramide and protein to fight visible signs of damaged hair. Get a Regular Trim: Even if you are growing your hair long, it’s important to trim ends regularly to do away
distribution modules placed throughout the house. Those from Milo provide a strong uninterrupted signal to every Wi-Fi device in the home, from attic to basement. To learn more, visit milowifi.com or call 1-877-426-6456. Don’t just live with the dead zones in your home. By taking a few simple steps, you can enjoy a more satisfying Wi-Fi experience. StatePoint
with split ends and keep hair looking healthy and shiny. Skipping regular trims can cause the split end to go up the hair shaft, resulting in extra damage and frizz. Check Your Lifestyle: Certain nutritional deficiencies, stress and lack of sleep are linked to hair damage and loss, so be sure your diet is well-rounded and contains all the components necessary for healthy hair. Likewise, get plenty of sleep and seek out ways to manage stress. Love your styling routine but hate damaged hair? Don’t despair. Whether it’s dryness, roughness or split ends, hair damage is normal, and simple steps and useful tools can help you protect and revive your locks. StatePoint

FAMILY FEATURES
ven if you have no immediate plans for leaving your home, it’s a good idea to approach renovations with resale value in mind. Upgrades that are likely to appeal to future buyers protect your investment while also improving your enjoyment of the home. One key to a successful renovation is figuring out how to personalize the space without making it so customized that it’s not attractive to other potential owners. For example, eliminating a bedroom to create a giant walkin closet may help achieve your dreams, but losing that bedroom can be a major hit to your home’s value. A good rule of thumb is to focus on aesthetics when it comes to integrating more of your personal tastes, because these can be easily changed with a coat of paint or minor work. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t make other, more significant changes to enhance your home. These renovation ideas – which include both cosmetic

touch-ups and more laborintensive suggestions – can help boost your home’s value.
Open space Older homes were often designed with a boxy, formal layout that is less conducive to most modern families’ needs. Today’s open floor plans offer functionality for everything from keeping an eye on the kids while making dinner to entertaining guests. This type of floor plan can also make small rooms feel larger and invite more light into darker parts of the house. The most cost-effective way to create an open space is to remove non-load-bearing walls (load bearing walls help support the roof; while they can be removed there’s typically quite a bit more time, labor and expense involved). Removing a wall may not be that complicated unless you encounter plumbing or HVAC ductwork that needs to be relocated. You’ll likely have some electrical outlets to move, and both the floor and ceiling will need attention to remove
lingering signs of the former wall.
Color change Although paint is one of the easiest ways to personalize your home, it’s also one of the least expensive, simplest ways to improve its value and appearance. A fresh coat of paint, inside or out, can create an appealing illusion of newness no matter the age of your home. For maximum resale value, stick to neutral tones so future buyers can focus on envisioning the place as their own, without the distraction of your own vibrant choices. If you don’t like the thought of boring beige, consider adding accent walls for pops of color that can be easily changed down the road.
Climate comfort Not every aspect of home improvement is visible at first glance like a fresh coat of paint; some value-boosting upgrades are more behind the scenes. One example is climate management. If you renovate a space that
October 3, 2018
needs better climate control, or if you add a new room where extending the existing ductwork is impractical, a split-ductless HVAC system may be the perfect solution. The ductless design saves HVAC contractors time during installation, therefore saving homeowners money. An option like Mitsubishi Electric’s MLZ One-Way Ceiling Cassette fits between standard 16-inch ceiling joists, eliminating the need for more complicated construction. The sleek, narrow-body design can be easily installed in existing homes and new construction projects. Additionally, these ceiling cassettes can be serviced from directly beneath the unit itself without an access panel, further eliminating the need to modify the surrounding area which can also provide significant cost savings on installation. Adjustable lighting A room’s ambiance can be completely transformed with lighting. For multi-purpose rooms, an option like dimmer switches lets you customize the lighting to fit the use, which can vary throughout the day. A well-lit living room is essential for a large gathering or a small group gathered for game night. That same space can be equally inviting for an intimate conversation or a casual movie night with the lights turned down low. One of the best parts is minimal experience is needed to swap out standard switches for the more versatile dimmers. Plus, in today’s technologydriven world, there’s an app for seemingly everything – including lighting. Homeowners can control the ambiance from their phones by installing smart lightbulbs and lighting strips.
Grunge-free garage Even though a garage’s functionality is the top concern for most buyers, a dingy, unkempt space can be a real turn-off. One way to instantly brighten and refresh the space is an epoxy coating on the floor. Applying the coating is relatively easy and once dry it helps prevent unsightly stains and damage in the future. Combine that with a thorough sweeping, wiping down walls and other surfaces, and organizing the clutter to create a more inviting space you can utilize to the fullest.
Understated elegance Features like crown molding and other wood accents such as chair rails are elegant upgrades that can elevate a home’s value with a relatively modest investment. An office or dining room is the perfect place to introduce these design elements to add a bit of formality to the space. You can also find crown molding in spaces like the living room, with the molding coordinating with built-in shelving flanking a fireplace. While getting the angles and fit just right is hardly a beginner’s endeavor, it’s a project that can pay dividends in the long run.
Better bathrooms Many homeowners approach a bathroom upgrade with big projects in mind, like swapping out the vanity, replacing the tub or installing tile flooring. However, it’s possible to make a noticeable impact with much smaller changes. Simply updating bathroom fixtures and fittings such as shower heads, faucets, towel racks and lighting can transform the space with minimal effort and far less work and expense than a largescale renovation.

5 Tips to Soothe a Fussy Baby
By Desert Star Staff If you’ve ever gone to great lengths to sooth a fussy baby, you may feel like you’ve tried every trick in the book. As most new parents learn quickly, this can be one of the most challenging aspects of caring for a little one. Keep in mind, some of the most effective methods to get a baby to relax, stop crying and get some sleep, are the safest and the simplest. • “Shush, shush, shush.” A “shhh” mimics the sounds of a cozy, comfy womb, which can have a calming
effect on fussy babies. Try this simple tip in a rocking chair. • Togetherness. Keeping Your Baby Safe While Sleeping
Babies often roll onto their stomachs, so choosing the right mattress is key. By Desert Star Staff Bringing home a new baby is a big adjustment and can feel overwhelming for parents, particularly when it comes to safety. While certain statistics can be alarming -- there are approximately 3,600 sudden unexpected infant deaths yearly in the U.S., according to the most recent government statistics -- parents can take comfort in knowing that following safe sleep practices can go a long way towards prevention, say experts. The three commonly reported types of such infant deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are Sudden Infant Death Syndrome www.desertstarweekly.com
(SIDS), accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed, and deaths from unknown causes. October is SIDS Awareness Month and the perfect time to understand the differences between SIDS and suffocation -- and, more importantly, to learn best safe sleep practices. While not every infant death is preventable, there are ways to lower risks, especially when it comes to suffocation while sleeping. • Always place babies on their backs for sleep, for both naps and night sleeping. A baby’s gag reflex and anatomy will help prevent choking, as opposed to those babies who sleep on their stomachs or sides.
• Babies should always sleep on firm surfaces, such as a mattress in a properly approved crib or bassinet, covered by a fitted sheet, not a blanket. This lowers risk of suffocation and SIDS. • Keep pillows and other soft objects out of your baby’s sleep area. Pillows, loose bedding and stuffed toys can raise suffocation risks. • Don’t sleep with your baby in the same bed. A baby can sleep in your room, but not in an adult bed or on a chair or couch. Sharing a bed can risk strangulation, suffocation or wedging your baby between objects. Sharing a room (not a bed) may decrease the risk of SIDS by as much as 50 percent, according to the CDC. October 3, 2018
• Never allow smoking near your baby, as this is a major SIDS risk factor. The right sleep products are an essential part of keeping your baby safe. Many experts espouse the importance of choosing a firm, breathable crib mattress. Most conventional, waterproof mattresses are covered with impermeable skins that prevent air circulation and increase suffocation risk, whereas a breathable alternative allows a baby to breathe safely even if he or she rolls over during sleep. For example, the revolutionary design of the fully breathable Newton Crib Mattress allows a baby to breathe right through it. An independent, blind, scientific study demonstrated that a baby gets 97 percent more air while breathing through a Newton mattress than on a traditional crib mattress. More information is available at newtonbaby.com. “As a pediatrician and mom, knowing that my baby was safely sleeping on a breathable mattress gave me full peace of mind and brought all of us better sleep,” says Dr. Deena Blanchard, a New Yorkbased pediatrician and mother. While you can’t protect your baby from everything, it’s important to lower the risks that you can, and creating a safe sleeping environment is a great start. StatePoint)

By Desert Star Staff Halloween is a big business industry these days, and the commerce of the holiday in the U.S. will exceed $10 billion this year. But what drives this growing industry? For the average family, Halloween over the years traditionally included nothing more than buying candy and costumes for little kids to go trick-or-treating. But, over the last couple of decades, the occasion was transformed, and now adult costumes, home decor, home haunting and amusement parks have joined the fright industry, too, with haunted houses springing up on farms, downtown buildings and even big box store spaces. Today’s haunted houses have evolved into multiple themed venues with shows, hayrides, corn mazes, haunts and even escape rooms. When is the last time you visited a haunted house? If it’s been a while, you should know that haunts today appeal to a wider audience than the
gore heavy attractions you might remember decades ago, with an infusion of Hollywood talent at the helm. So, with thousands of attractions nationwide, and in some cases dozens near you, how do you select the best one for you and your family? “It’s always best to go with the more established attractions, and local haunts are almost always going to be more authentic experiences than visiting an amusement park,” says Larry Kirchner, founder of Hauntworld.com, which offers a nationwide directory to find corn mazes, pumpkin patches, hayrides, escape rooms and haunted houses. Kirchner adds, “However, the closest attractions aren’t always the best ones. Haunts, pumpkin patches and corn mazes are sometimes in rural areas. So, don’t be afraid to jump in your car and travel a bit to find to the best haunt in your area.” If you are looking for something super spooky,

MUSIC
BY ROBERT KINSLER
Legacy of the ‘60s Looms Large
Some of rock and pop music’s most groundbreaking and enduring artists emerged in the 1960s. In recent weeks – via several outstanding concerts, a newly-issued concert film and the death of a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer – I’ve been reminded what a treasure that era was in the development of popular music. Those attending the Arcade Fire at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on Sept. 20 not only caught the Canadian rockers performing their debut album “Funeral” in its entirety that night but were rewarded with an opening 45-minute set from the Zombies, a band formed at the dawn of the 1960s.
Led by founding members singer Colin Blunstone and keyboardist Rod Argent, the quintet delivered a rousing set that included many of the group’s finest ‘60s material along with some newer gems. The Zombies’ sound – a mix of rock, baroque pop, psychedelia, jazz and blues – was both of its time and ahead of its time. Indeed, the group truly sounds as great as ever. The evidence was clear via stellar renditions of “Tell Her No,” “She’s Not There” and a handful of shimmering originals off their 1968 masterwork “Odessey and Oracle,” including “Time of the Season.” More recently, the Greek Theatre hosted the final U.S.
tour date for Ringo Starr & His All Starr Band on Sept. 29. As a member of the Beatles, Starr’s legacy was established long ago. Yet, the singer-songwriter-drummer has continued to issue oftoverlooked new albums and presented some of the most fun concerts around. Joined by an illustrious cast including guitarist Steve Lukather (Toto), Gregg Rolie (Santana, Journey), Graham Goldman (10cc), Colin Hay (Men at Work) and others, the two-hour show featured all of the artists performing their best-known material. Starr performed some of his most beloved songs from his time with the Beatles (including his cover of Carl Perkins’ “Matchbox,” “What Goes On,” “Don’t Pass Me By,” “Yellow Submarine”) and several of his solo hits co-penned with Fab Four band mate George Harrison (“It Don’t Come Easy,” “Photograph”). The night closed with an inspired “With a Little Help From My Friends,” where the ensemble was joined by a number of musical guests including Joe Walsh (the Eagles), Gary Wright and Edgar Winter. The sold-out crowd and mix of generations there was evidence of the profound impact and continuing influence of the Beatles almost 50 years after the group disbanded. Joni Mitchell is the focus of a wonderful new release available on both Bluray and digital video. “Both Sides Now: Live At The Isle of Wight Festival” chronicles the legendary Canadian songstress’ performance in 1970. By Desert Star Staff LANSING, Mich. — The uninsured rate for low-income adults has plunged 22 points in rural areas of Michigan since the state expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act - dropping from 38 percent to 16 percent, according to a new report. Researchers at Georgetown University and the University of North Carolina found that the uninsured rate dropped in the state’s urban areas as well, to 13 percent. The ACA did this by providing federal funds to help states cover more people under the Medicaid program, known here as Healthy Michigan. Joan Alker, report co-author and executive director at the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families,
said the ACA made an even bigger impact nationally. “The major finding is that states that expanded Medicaid saw more than three times the rate of decline in the uninsured adult population in rural areas and small towns than those states that did not expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act,” Alker said. State statistics show more than 650,000 people are currently enrolled in Healthy Michigan, and the program has served more than 1 million Michiganders since the state expanded Medicaid in 2014. States that did not expand Medicaid continue to face high levels of uninsurance, especially in depressed, rural areas. The state Legislature passed a bill this summer
requiring those on Healthy Michigan to work 80 hours a month, nine months a year, in order to maintain coverage. But Emily Schwarzkopf, a policy analyst with the Michigan League for Public Policy, called that a “one step forward, two steps back” approach, and predicted people will fall off the insurance rolls. “There’s lots of data out there that shows that people lose their coverage because they are unable to navigate the paperwork and the bureaucracy at the state government level,” Schwarzkopf said. She noted several University of Michigan studies have shown that Healthy Michigan has allowed people to get back into the workforce without losing

Information: eagle-rock.com. Sadly, Marty Balin – the co-founder of groundbreaking Jefferson Airplane and long-time member of Jefferson Starship – died on Sept. 27. He was 76.
While the Cincinnati, Ohio native started his rise after forming Jefferson Airplane with guitarist Paul Kantner in San Francisco in 1965, most music fans know him better for his lead vocals on a string of wonderful Jefferson Starship singles released in the 1970s including “Miracles,” “Count on Me” and “With Your Love.” Balin along with others in the “classic” lineup of Jefferson Airplane were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. Alongside Jefferson Airplane, Balin was honored with the Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016 for his outstanding artistic contributions to the field of recording.

Kenya Airways Introduces Non-Stop Flights from JFK To Nairobi
Kenyan Women. Photo by: Lady Beverly Cohn In a most festive evening, an event aptly named “Magical Kenya,” a gathering took place to celebrate the inauguration of a non-stop flight from JFK to Nairobi. The exciting event was held in the SLS Hotel’s Garden Room. Sponsored by the Kenyan Tourist Board, and hosted by the Honorable Najib Balala, Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Tourism & Wildlife, the venue was transformed into a visual taste of Kenya with giant, colorful posters decorating the walls lending a peek into what a visitor might experience. Greeted with a “Sundowner” – a cocktail traditionally served at sunset on Kenyan safaris - an array of food was offered to the 130 people in attendance. Guests ranged from tour operators and travel agents to a sprinkling of
journalists. Much to the delight of attendees, the festivities began with a wonderful troupe of young dancers who performed traditional tribal dances. Kicking off the few speeches, which were quite informative, an entertaining Al Merschen, partner in Myriad, a company that represents Kenya Tourism, he asked the group, “How many of you would like to win two tickets to Nairobi? Of course, every hand in the room shot up after which he announced that he actually had two free tickets to Sacramento, which resulted in gales of laughter. He then painted a verbal description of the magical experiences that awaited visitors to Kenya, ranging from culture, safaris, animals, the compelling landscapes and vistas, to the beaches, the gastronomy, and
most of all the friendly, warm people. He added, “Kenya is a place you don’t go to “visit,” but a place that you visit to “feel.” Other speakers included the aforementioned Honorable CS Najib Balala who talked about the special bond between the United States and Kenya. Paul Dehaan, Sales Manager of Kenya Airways, gave a brief presentation about the new flight, scheduled to launch in a month, with fares beginning at $700. Following a brief film illustrating some of the extraordinary experiences awaiting a tourist, Dehaan reached into a bowl and selected a business card of a guest who would receive the two free tickets to Nairobi. For the record, I didn’t win. Perhaps the most exciting speaker was the enchanting Kenya Tourism Board CEO,
By Desert Star Staff Sixty-two percent of 9 to 11-year-olds say they have been bullied at least “once or twice,” according to a recent national survey. The survey, commissioned by the Cartoon Network and designed by VJR Consulting in consultation with the Making Caring Common project (MCC) at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, found that the vast majority of young children in this country have experienced bullying and that they look to adults to set an example about how to treat others. October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and an excellent time to focus on creating more inclusion in your school and community by re-enforcing kindness and empathy. • Values matter: The
values kids are taught really do matter. Those who consider “caring about others” to be “very” important (74 percent) are far more likely to do kind things for other kids, and far less likely to be bullies. • Help kids speak up: Over half of kids who have seen someone getting picked on or being left out say one of the reasons they don’t help is they don’t know what to do or say. But there are resources which can help kids learn how to handle these tough situations. For example, Cartoon Network animated children’s stories from their survey into new PSAs, including one featuring Beastboy from “Teen Titans GO!” in a similar situation speaking up, saying “That’s Not Ok.” Additional PSAs from Cartoon Network and Committee for Children
showcasing more stories told by children about their personal experiences being bullied can be found at cartoonnetwork. com/stop-bullying/video.html. • Resources on kindness and empathy: Cartoon Network and 826 National partnered on the Inclusion Storytelling Project to provide tools and encouragement for kids to share their own stories. Easyto-use digital resources for educators and parents offer tips to help kids speak up against bullying and develop greater caring and empathy skills. More information can be found at 826digital.com. • Be engaged: Communication is key to learning what is really going on in your child’s life. The vast majority of 9-to-11year-olds (83 percent) said it would help kids their age be kinder to one another if every
The highlight of the evening was a spirited speech given by Dr. Betty Radier, CEO of the Kenya Tourism Board. Courtesy Photo Dr. Betty Radie. She stated that, “With this new direct flight, tourism should increase and is expected to impact positively on my country’s economy.” She shared that before 2017 the UK was their Number 1 tourism partner, but presently the U.S. occupies the Number 1 spot. Radier then played a game with the audience in which she asked a series of questions about Kenya and whoever got the right answer, earned a piece of jewelry that she removed from her wrists or neck. Luckily this never became
a version of Strip Poker. The evening culminated with the guests getting up to dance, some of who were lucky enough to dance with one of the members of the talented dance troop and being a trained dancer myself, I happily got to take a few whirls around the floor. Oh, the difficult life of a travel writer, but like they say, “someone has to do it.” For information on this special new non-stop flight to Nairobi, do contact you travel agent and take advantage of this golden opportunity.

HPV and Throat Cancer in Men: How Vaccines Can Help
By Desert Star Staff Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most commonly diagnosed sexually transmitted disease in the U.S. and cases of HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer -- a cancer that develops on the back and sides of the throat, tonsils and base of the tongue -- in middle-age men have tripled in the past three decades. But did you know that vaccines can help reverse this trend? Take the opportunity to learn more.
“Nearly all sexually active men and women get exposed to HPV at some point in their lives,” says Dr. Tom Thomas, director, Head and Neck Reconstructive Surgery and Transoral Robotic Surgery at Atlantic Health System’s Morristown Medical Center. “Symptoms may develop decades after you become infected, so it’s often impossible to know who transmitted the virus to you.” You’re at higher risk for oral HPV if you:
• Haven’t been vaccinated against HPV • Have had unprotected oral sex • Have many sexual partners • Have a sexual partner who has had many sexual partners • Started having sex when you were 16 or younger The good news is that when caught early, treatment for HPV-related throat cancer is often successful. Symptoms include a lump
on the neck that isn’t painful but doesn’t go away, a sore throat or difficulty swallowing that doesn’t go away after 3-4 weeks, unexplained weight loss and a change in voice. If you have any of these symptoms, see your doctor right away. If you have a history of known HPV infection or other sexually transmitted diseases, see a head and neck expert. “Even with no symptoms, you can pass HPV on to others, and you can get HPV from someone who doesn’t show any symptoms,” says Dr. James Wong, medical director, Leonard B. Kahn Head and Neck Cancer Institute at Morristown Medical Center. As one of the leaders of the new Atlantic HPV Center, the country’s first center dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, research and survivorship of HPVassociated cancers of the head and neck, Dr. Wong points out that understanding HPV and cancer can mean catching the disease early. Unfortunately, experts say that persisting misconceptions associated with throat cancers caused by HPV create stigmas and fears and prevent
By Desert Star Staff PORTLAND, Ore. — Airport workers around the world are holding a day of action today to call for better wages and working conditions. Portland International Airport workers want to see their wages catch up with those at other airports across the United States. Stan Edwards, a personal service assistant at the Portland airport, is among the laborers who say the airport
needs to raise its standards for workers. After five years there, Edwards makes $12 an hour, doesn’t have access to benefits and struggles to afford housing in Portland. He said airport workers are asking to increase the minimum wage. “You guys got to listen to us,” Edwards said. “There is a reason why you guys are best airport for six years in a row - not six years, but six years in a row - and it’s because of the people
who’s behind the scenes.” Airport workers in other parts of the country have recently been successful at raising wages. Last week, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey approved a $19 per hour minimum wage for 40,000 workers at three airports that serve New York City. In San Fransisco, a proposal to increase airport contract workers’ minimum wage to $17 an hour made its way to the mayor’s
desk last week as well. Jeremy Simer, researcher with the Service Employees International Union Local 49, said his union represents about 450 workers on average at different companies at the airport. Simer said the Port of Portland, the public agency that manages the airport, has let it fall behind other port authorities across the country. “That’s why airport workers are calling on the Port of Portland to do their

many patients from having important conversations with loved ones and doctors. “We need to overcome the embarrassment associated with throat cancer caused by HPV,” says Dr. Thomas. “Anyone who’s sexually active is at risk for getting HPV, even if you’ve had only one sexual partner.” There are more than 150 types of HPV, but the HPV vaccine protects against both types 16 and 18, which cause the majority of cases of oropharyngeal cancer. More widespread use of the vaccine could lower the rate of highrisk HPV infection in men and women and consequently lower the rate of HPV-related cancer in both sexes. The Centers for Disease Control recommends getting the HPV vaccine for children at ages 1112, before they are exposed to HPV, in order to protect them from certain cancers later in life. However, those who have already been infected can still get some protection from the vaccine, which is recommended for females aged 13 through 26 and males aged 13 through 21 who were not adequately immunized previously. job as public servants and to manage the airport in a way that’s good for the workers who work there and not just for airline profits,” Simer said. According to an Economic Roundtable study from 2017, nearly 30 percent of airport workers in the U.S. must rely on public assistance for basics such as food, housing and health care. Protests will take place in at least 43 airports today in 13 countries, including 11 major U.S. airports.

PRIN1802379 To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both of GRAGORY JOHN GRAVES. A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by PATRICIA L. FELLOWS. in the Superior Court of California, County of RIVERSIDE. THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that PATRICIA L. FELLOWS be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. THE PETITION requests the decedent’s will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court. THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held in this court as follows: OCTOBER 17, 2018 at 8:45AM in Dept. 1A located at 46200 Oasis Street, Indio, CA 92201. IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk. Attorney for Petitioner: JULIA E. By Desert Star Staff TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida is in the midst of its own Supreme Court nomination controversy, as terms for three of the seven justices expire around the same time a new governor will be sworn into office. Scott directed the Supreme Court Judicial Nominating Commission to begin accepting and vetting applications for the court appointments. The deadline for those applications is October 8. And there’s another deadline, two days after the November 6 general election, for submitting names of potential justices to the governor. Mills said in his opinion,

Could FL Supreme Court Battle Spark a Constitutional Crisis?
The new appointments to Florida’s Supreme Court are likely to reshape the seven-member Court for years, if not decades. (Bruin79/Wikimedia Creative Commons) the commission should start reviewing candidates, but nominations are premature. “You can’t make the nominations to somebody who has no power to make them,” he said. “And part of the reason for that - I mean,
just aside from common sense - is that the Constitution requires the governor to make the appointments within 60 days of the nominations.” While Scott claims he’ll work together with his successor on interviewing
nominees, agreement is far from certain if progressive Democrat Andrew Gillum assumes office, or even for Republican Ron DeSantis, who has asserted his right to choose. The new governor takes office on January 8.
Idaho’s First Legal Services Org. for Low-Income Immigrants
In the past, Idahoans in the immigrant court system were referred to free and low-cost legal services in Montana or Washington. (Immigrant Justice Idaho) By Desert Star Staff BOISE, Idaho — A new nonprofit has launched to give more Idahoans in immigrant court legal representation. Currently, only 25 percent of Idahoans facing deportation proceedings have a lawyer. Immigrant Justice Idaho is looking to address one of the
biggest barriers for immigrants in court: cost. The organization will provide free and low-cost services to those who need it. Maria Andrade, executive director of Immigrant Justice Idaho, said one of the most important resources for people navigating immigration courts is legal representation.
“This is one thing that I am 100 percent certain makes a difference in people’s lives,” Andrade said; “and that is putting bodies, putting representatives in court with people that would otherwise be one of the three-quarters of people in Idaho who appear without an immigration lawyer
at their side when they’re arguing a case against a trained government prosecutor.” Immigrant Justice Idaho will be the first organization in the Gem State recognized by the U.S. Department of Justice to provide free legal and referral services. It is not required that defendants in U.S. immigration courts be assigned a public defender as they are in criminal courts. Andrade said the DOJ’s list of free legal services referrals is updated quarterly. In the past, those in immigration court proceedings have had to look to services in other states. “The only name that has been on that list if you are in Idaho for the last 15 years since I’ve been here has been an entity in Montana or in Washington,” she said. “So there’s been no entity named in Idaho that has been on that list.” Andrade said the other big part of this launch is education for the public and lawyers in the state who want to become better advocates for immigrants.
Groups Sue Trump Administration Over Waste-Prevention Rule
By Desert Star Staff BISMARCK, N.D. — A coalition of groups, including members of the Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota, are suing the Trump administration for its decision to rescind the methane-waste prevention rule on oil and gas operations. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management recently rolled back protections in the wasteprevention rule, which was put in place to reduce flaring and venting of the potent greenhouse gas on federal and tribal lands. Without this regulation, the groups suing say taxpayers could lose $80 million in royalties over the next decade. Robin Cooley is an attorney with Earthjustice, which is representing the groups. “The rule defines waste so that BLM is looking only at an oil and gas operator’s profits and completely ignoring its legal obligations to protect the public welfare when leasing publicly and tribally owned minerals,” Cooley said. The Trump administration says the 2016 rule put in place by the Obama administration was a burden on small drilling companies. Cooley said the administration has ignored the environmental impacts on communities living on the front lines of oil and gas development such as the Fort Berthold Reservation. There are more than 1,400 oil and gas wells on the reservation. Lisa DeVille, president of the Fort Berthold Protectors of Water and Earth Rights, lives on the reservation

Oscar Wilde’s Scandalous Novella “A Picture Of Dorian Gray” By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association Most audiences are familiar with Oscar Wilde’s gothic drama novella “A Picture of Dorian Gray” from the 1945 movie starring Hurd Hatfield, as Dorian Gray. The film left an indelible mark on Hatfield’s career, much like the portrait and the homoerotism in the novella made in Wilde’s career. Homosexuality in England was a criminal offence right up to 1967 when the laws were decriminalized. Oscar Wilde and many others of the upper classes flaunted the law of gross indecency of the Victorian era to a point that the pejorative phrase ‘the Englishman’s vice’ came into literary use and entered the lexicon. Wilde’s highly-charged, sexual novella and the Hollywood production codedriven 1945 movie, intrigued A Noise Within theatre director Michael Michetti, into tackling a stage adaptation in 2006 at Pasadena’s Boston Court Theatre. Mr. Michetti’s 2018 production now on stage at the A Noise Within Theatre, in East Pasadena, closely adheres to Wilde’s original story and most of his dialogue. It’s the bold staging, however, of Michetti’s vision that captures the audience’s attention in his 2018 revival production. The story revolves around three male characters: Dorian Gray (Colin Bates) Basil Hallward (Amin El Gamal, and Lord Henry Wooten (Frederick Stuart). The material is somewhat dated and suffers a bit, due to its time period and societal changes from Victorian England to the realities of our 21st century. What was shocking then, produces yawns today by comparison. Perhaps, it shouldn’t, but it does. Does the phrase ‘boys will be boys’
sound familiar today? We’re still a male dominated society, drowning in a sea of raging hormones. With the guard rails of society slowly being removed, debauchery and hedonism are equal opportunity offenders that come in many form; then and now. Mr. El Gamal’s painter Basil Hallward, lacks the passion and the feeling that Basil has for Dorian. There’s more to their relationship than we see, but Basil is reluctant to display his affection for Dorian. Mr. Stuart as Lord Henry Wotton, openly displays his relationship, not only, as a mentor/guide to Dorian’s burgeoning interests in hedonism and debauchery, but becomes his lover in the bargain. Michetti’s production features actors and dancers that glide and meld into Greek chorus ensembles, and back again into the various characters that propel the focus of the Dorian Gray character forward, which is wonderfully brought to life by Colin Bates in a bravura performance; to the moment at the end of the play where we see what the result of years of debauchery and hedonism can do to the human body and inner soul. Literature is rife with Faustian bargaining ploys, mainly because audiences love the conflicts and the situations in such stories, films and plays. A Noise Within theatre is a classical, repertory company of resident actors, many of whom appear in this production are: The redoubtable Deborah Strang as Lady Brandon/Lady Narborough/Ensemble, Justin Lawrence Barnes as Adrian Singleton/Ensemble, Daniel Lench as Lord George Fermor/ Thornton/Ensemble, Tania Verafield as Lady Henry/Gladys/ Ensemble, Chelsea Kurtz as Sibyl Vane/Ensemble, Amy Tolsky as Mrs. Vane/Prostitute/ Ensemble, Jose Angel Donado as James Vane/Ensemble, Dale Sandlin as “Romeo/Sir Geoffrey Clouston/Ensemble and Abe Martell as Alan Campbell/
(L-R) Colin Bates, Amin El Gamal, and Frederick Stuart. Photo by Craig Schwartz. Ensemble. The skilled ensemble performers are outstanding, but I wish they didn’t have to fight the music and sound design by Robert Oriol and the technical team to be heard. The sound needs to come down at least two notches on the console. The lighting design by Rose Malone provides just the right amount of light to appreciate the handsomely designed Victorian era costumes of Garry Lennon. The choreography of John Pennington is
sensual and evocative and nicely strings together the narrative threads of he story. In the film version of the story, Dorian’s portrait is seen in all its visual Technicolor horrific truth. The challenge in theatre is how to present the same experience by just staring through empty picture frames. Director Michetti peppers his stage with groups of large, small, and medium sized wooden frames that is the production ‘leitmotif’ of Scenic
Designers James Maloof and director Michetti. They serve as the ‘lenses of life’, for all the characters. The acting areas are created by space staging and direction by director Michetti. (A side-bar note here alerts patrons that there are moments of brief full-frontal male nudity in the production). “A Picture of Dorian Gray” is an impressive production that performs at A Noise Within Theatre and runs through November 16, 2018.
