Las Vegas shooting At least 59 dead, over 500 injured in Mandalay Bay attack By Desert Star Staff At least 58 people died and as many as 515 were injured in the US’s worst-ever mass shooting, at a music festival near the Mandalay Bay Casino, Las Vegas. The gunman rained fire from the 32nd floor of a hotel for several minutes before taking his life prior to police arrival.

The gunman in the Las Vegas attack has been named as 64-yearold Stephen Paddock. Police said in a statement that Paddock, a “white male from Mesquite, Nevada, opened fire on a crowd of more than 22,000 concert-goers from his hotel room on the 32nd

floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel on Sunday evening at approximately 10:08pm.” As many as 406 people have been transported to hospitals following the lone-wolf attack, the statement added. Police said that among the dead is an off-duty Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department

officer. “There were also two on-duty officers injured, one of whom was upgraded recently from critical to stable condition. The other sustained nonlife-threatening wounds.” Las Vegas police say the woman they were seeking, 62-year-old Marilou Danley, is no longer considered a

“person of interest” in the mass shooting, AP reported. Shortly after the attack, police said they were looking for the woman believed to be the gunman’s roommate. Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said officers confronted the Continues on Page 10

Buddy Rich get the 418th Star Story and Photos pat Krause The 418th Star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars was presented to what people said was the greatest drummer of all time, Buddy Rich. The Star was dedicated on Saturday, September 30th and was placed at 124 South Palm Canyon Drive. This Star was dedicated in honor of Buddy Rich that marks his 100th Birthday. Rich passed away in 1987 and was a long-time resident of Palm Springs. His widow Marie Rich still lives in Palm Springs but was unable to attend the dedication. One of the first speakers at the event was his grandson

Mitch Rich, who said he had his four sons with him for this Star. Mayor Robert Moon was also a presenter and said this would always be known as Buddy Rich Day. Moon said he bought all Buddy Rich’s record as a young man and is an avid Jazz lover. Rich’s daughter, Cathy was the next speaker, and she mentioned she went to Palm Springs High School. She said she chose this spot for the Star because they used to come to Louise’s Pantry, which is now Kalura Trattoria and next to the Old Plaza Theatre. She said that Buddy used to come to Palm Springs as a retreat to relax. Other speakers were

Grammy-winning singer, Jack Jones, who knew Buddy and read a poem that was used at Buddy’s funeral. The next speaker was Morris Diamond, who was his roommate when Buddy played with the Dorsey Band. Barbara Corday was Buddy’s niece and the 1st child born in the family. Buddy was a fantastic uncle always bringing her presents from his tours. She said that Frank Sinatra didn’t like Buddy but when they both where older Sinatra was there for Buddy when he became ill. Ambassador to the United

The Pieta. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause I recently went to Rome on a Holiday with my daughter. I found that when you visit Europe, you need to have a great pair of walking shoes. It is pretty easy to get from one place to another with the considerable bus system they have in place. The Metro underground railway was not working we were told because of a strike. Uber was still working when we were there but was told the Taxi system was the best to use even if it cost a little more. Europe is expensive for trying to purchase trinkets to take home. It rained buckets while we were touring the Coliseum. The people that live in Rome were thrilled it was raining as they said they rarely get rain, maybe 15 times a year. We and hundreds of other people actually walked in water,

sometimes ankle deep to be able to tour the Coliseum as a once in a lifetime visit they didn’t want to miss. The water on the streets was gone by the end of the day, great system. 3 days in Rome in not enough to take it all in. You definitely have to throw coins in the Trevi fountain, walk the Spanish Steps, see the Plaza Navona and its fountains. So much to see. We bought ponchos for 3 euros. A few minutes later, we could have gotten them for 1 euro and an umbrella also for 1 euro from vendors walking the streets. I found them to be the best bet money wise for memorabilia to take home for family or as a keepsake for myself. My daughter got a few great purchases from street vendors. I am sorry I didn’t buy more from them. We chose the Coliseum to

tour on Sunday as the Vatican was closed. On Monday, we visited the Vatican and St. Peters. I would allow one whole day for that tour. There is so much to see including the marvelous Sistine Chapel and the fantastic ceiling. The marvelous walk to it with all the paintings and painted ceilings. Statues along all the walkways kept your eyes busy going from one to another while trying to read the plaques about each particular one. View the art works by the Masters. You can send postcards stamped from the Vatican. Another thing I would

recommend would be a private tour guide at St. Peters. She brought to life the statues and paintings and when and why they were made. She also informed us the Pope would be there on Wednesday, and he walks through the crowd and speaks to the people, but we couldn’t change our plane tickets. The guide mentioned he was a very funny Pope and thought he was a Pope of the people. Try to make a visit on Wednesdays when he is there. I was so impressed with the Roman Forum and the history with all the old pieces that they have dug up. Pillars dot the landscape and arches,

parts of buildings that go on for blocks. Palentine Hill rises above it all again with artifacts from an age long ago. Across the street, they are digging up more ruins and pillars. They are desperately trying to preserve their history. We should learn from them. We went to an Opera, La Boheme, in an underground area where they are trying to dig up more relics and there is a building above us. We stayed in a small hotel with a patio that overlooked the street watching traffic on very tiny streets that is unimaginable to someone from our Valley.

When Fines Are Not Fine (Enough) By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL

Dear Mr. Richardson: Am I correct in my thinking that our Board can set up a fine schedule without the vote of the membership? Thank you, A.P., Newhall. Dear A.P.: Associations, before imposing a disciplinary fine, must have a “schedule of fines” in writing, as required by Civil Code 5850. By Janice Gough The holiday season means many things to many people. It is the best time to relax and reflect on the goals you wish to achieve for the coming year. Your long-term goals may not change, unless conditions force you to make different plans, however short-term goals can change constantly. An underlying sound wealth management strategy is a clearly defined plan that lays out the objectives of the portfolio as well as any other pertinent information, such as a your asset allocation, annual contribution to the portfolio, planned expenditures, and time horizon. Unfortunately, many people ignore this critical effort, in part, because it can be very time-consuming, detail-oriented, and tedious. A well thought out blueprint is necessary to achieve a successful plan. A well written financial plan is also the blueprint for a person’s entire financial house and a firm foundation on which all else rests. When building your financial house, the foundation must be strong. Your foundation should be a composition of safe investments. The middle of your house is your working capital, and the investments which are considered the ones with risks are placed in the roof portion of your house. Thus, if the roof were to fly off, in the event of a market drop, you will still have a base to rebuild on. This is a good way to determine percentage wise, what amount

are you willing to place at risk. Market performance and headlines change far more often than plan objectives. Tuning out the ever-present “noise” of the markets and sticking to your plan, will put you in the best position possible to meet your long-term financial goals, but also form the basis for future behavioral. Those who are most successful in achieving their goals are usually those who are good at mentally living those goals in advance through sensory specific goal setting. The beginning involves understanding and identifying specifically all the things you want to have, to do, and become, and creating a vivid picture in your mind of what achieving those objectives will feel like. It is important to visualize the achievement of goals in as much detail as possible. This is the kind of focused goal setting that motivates you consciously. It, also triggers the subconscious part of your mind that will attract opportunities, which, in turn, help you achieve those goals. Your goals should be in writing and placed somewhere where you constantly see them. A good place is where you start each day or have your morning coffee. To compliment your master plan, make out monthly plans that will build toward your ultimate dream. Your daily “to do” list comes next, as each day attributes to your monthly success and helps you to stay focused. Your personal goals will melt into your blueprint. You must be able to know

Dear B.C.: Technically speaking, the HOA could pursue legal action against members who have unpaid fines. If the amounts are minor, it is not worth the expense. Some associations amend their CC&Rs to allow the HOA to record a lien against the property for unpaid fines. This must be authorized by the CC&Rs. The law specifically does not allow associations to pursue nonjudicial foreclosure on fines, under Civil Code 5725(b). Thanks, Kelly

So, we filed a nuisance complaint with our HOA, and his antics have escalated. I am told that his parents have paid the fines imposed and will continue to do so in order to allow their son to stay in the home. Any suggestions? D.B., San Juan Capistrano Dear D.B.: Sometimes fines simply are not sufficient to compel a resident to be a good neighbor. Association boards can allow fines to build to huge amounts, while the noncompliance continues to be a problem for the community. If several months of fines have not caused the bad neighbor to pay attention, sometimes other action is necessary. One of the most difficult decisions a board (and their legal counsel) make is deciding when to become involved in dealing with a harassing neighbor. There is

no hard and fast line. When a situation builds to a point where it is affecting multiple neighbors, and fines are not working, unfortunately, at that point legal counsel may be needed to intervene. Your board may have already discussed this with HOA counsel, and if not yet, they should. Best regards, Kelly [Readers: Read California laws at www. leginfo.legislature.ca.gov] Kelly G. Legal Marijuana Still Raising Controversy in New Mexico

The City of Albuquerque says it can’t risk losing federal transit funding by allowing a medical marijuana dispensary to advertise on city buses. (Dailychronic.net) By Desert Star Staff ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A state-licensed medical dispensary, Ultra Health, is waiting to hear from the federal government

after the wraparound bus ads it wanted to buy in Albuquerque were rejected. The city says advertising an illegal drug is prohibited by federal law.

Medical marijuana use is legal in New Mexico, but the city’s transportation department is worried that federal transit money will be withheld if the drug is

advertised on city buses. Now, a local city council member is asking the U.S. Justice Department for clarification. Ultra Health CEO Duke Rodriguez says bus ads or not, medical marijuana sales are booming. “You know, even in the short time that we’ve advocated for medical cannabis, the program has rocketed from nonexistent to – next year we should, 2018, we should probably be at $150 million,” he points out. Marijuana ads have appeared on buses in California without federal repercussions. In New Mexico, the state says more than 40,000 people are now signed up to purchase medical marijuana, an 84 percent increase from 2016 to 2017. Rodriguez says more dispensaries are opening in small communities, which

in his view could stand to benefit from legalizing recreational marijuana as well. Rodriguez notes that New Mexico’s heavy reliance on the oil and gas industry benefits only some parts of the state, primarily counties in the northwestern and southeastern corners. He maintains total legalization would level the playing field. “Whatever happens in Farmington will happen in Clayton, will happen in Hobbs, will happen in Las Cruces,” he stresses. “It isn’t isolated to any one geography. Cannabis is one that will be impacted across every community statewide, regardless of their size.” In a statewide poll this year, 60 percent of voting adults said they support legalization. But a plan has never made it out of the State Legislature, and Gov. Susana Martinez has vowed to veto any legislation that does.

How Can SD Keep People with Mental Health Issues Out of Jails?

By Desert Star Staff PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota is one of five states where state law says people experiencing a mental health crisis can be held in a correctional facility. Advocates for people with mental health issues call that a big problem. John Snook, executive director of the Treatment Advocacy Center, says jails and prisons aren’t built to handle this population, and that using them criminalizes mental health disorders. He blames the lack of psychiatric beds throughout the system, which affects people of every age and demographic. “One example that we’ve figured out doing analysis: We now have fewer state hospital beds per capita than we did in 1850,” he points out. “And again, that’s not 1950, that’s 1850.” To help alleviate the issue in South Dakota, the state

has set up a fund to speed up mental health screening for criminal defendants. It’s hard to know how widespread the problem is, but the online magazine The Marshall Project found on at least seven occasions at a hospital in Pierre, children ages 12 to 16 spent a night in jail, in some cases after attempting suicide. Those figures are from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the federal agency that oversees hospitals. The challenge is greater in rural areas, where law enforcement often doesn’t have the resources to get people to the proper facility. But Snook says that isn’t the fault of police departments. “Too often, people jump to demonize or blame law enforcement for outcomes that they really have no control over,” he explains. “And the reality is, we’ve set up a system that doesn’t adequately

fund treatment beds.” Snook says the biggest hurdle in this crisis is a lack of federal dollars, due mainly to a provision that prohibits the federal government from funding care at an in-patient

facility. Some states are looking into fixes such as telemedicine to bridge the gap in rural areas. “But at the end of the day, it’s a problem that really is only solved by prioritizing this population and spending

money – oftentimes, money that you may need to take from other, just as needy areas, but there aren’t a lot of other solutions,” Snook stats.

By Desert Star Staff ST. PETER, Minn. – For 53 years, the Nobel Conference has brought leading thinkers to the Gustavus Adolphus College campus in St. Peter. Starting on Tuesday, this year’s conference theme is advances in reproductive technology, including male birth control and fetal gene transplants. Conference director Lisa Heldke, who spent years planning the event, says the Nobel Committee gave

Gustavus the privilege and responsibility of convening a discussion that would have lasting impact. “It’s an absolutely astonishing honor that we have this right to name this conference the Nobel Conference,” she states. “This is an invitation to come and think together with us about revolutionary, transformative and pressing scientific questions, and the ethical issues that arise alongside them.”

The conference will be held at Lund Arena. Tickets may still be available on a sliding scale so that students can attend. It will also be live-streamed. For the conference, classics professor Yurie Hong surveyed adults from across the country to see how they would react to a male birth control pill, which researchers say is on the horizon. She says some of the results were surprising. “If male contraception

were available, the majority of men and women said that, in a long-term relationship, they would be less likely to use condoms,” she states. The survey also found a majority of men said they would use a birth control option in pill form, as an alternative to a vasectomy or condoms. Hong says conference participants will consider the implications of male birth control as well as why it has taken so long to develop.

And they’ll cover other scientific advances that raise questions about pregnancy prevention, childbearing and fetal intervention. “It’s very much grounded in the liberal arts and this notion that we need to think critically about some of the largest issues facing us as we move forward,” she states. In past years, the conference has taken up other weighty issues, including globalization, climate change and outer space.

Hurricanes Call Trump Budget, Personnel Policies into Question By Desert Star Staff CHARLESTON, W.Va. – President Donald Trump is defending his response to Hurricane Maria, but the Union of Concerned Scientists says the problems are deeper than this crisis. According to Andrew Rosenberg, former regional administrator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Marine Fisheries Service, the White House doesn’t seem to understand the role of scientists and professional staff at technical agencies like NOAA. Rosenberg says before the hurricanes, Trump was cutting the budget and under-staffing NOAA and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Then, the storms hit. “All of a sudden, everyone says, ‘Well, we need the federal agencies,’ even people who have been arguing, sometimes for decades,” Rosenberg points

out. “Everything from NOAA to the Corps of Engineers, to the Department of Interior, to HUD.” Trump criticized the mayor of San Juan after she faulted what she described as a slow federal response to a desperate humanitarian crisis. The president says his appointees are doing a great job under tough conditions. But the administration has been slow to fill thousands of high-level federal vacancies. Trump has faulted Congress for failing to approve his nominations, but Rosenberg points out most of the positions don’t require Senate approval. He says it’s hard to tell if the White House isn’t doing its job or doesn’t think these appointees are necessary. Either way, he says, the result is the same. “There’s no nominees,” he says simply. “There’s no nominees in many cases. And what you really need is the professionals in those

Half of American Households Will Participate in Halloween Festivities By Desert Star Staff Half of all households will have at least one person wearing a Halloween costume this year, and 16 percent will have at least one pet in costume according to the 2017 Goodwill Halloween Poll. Participants in this year’s survey were asked a series of online questions about Halloween costumes and decorating habits. When asked about plans to purchase, reuse or create a costume this year, half of respondents indicated that at least one person in their household will wear a Halloween costume this year. Among other survey results: More than half of respondents (51 percent) are interested in wearing a Halloween costume this year. Ten percent of all respondents would most like to wear a funny costume, 8 percent would most like to wear a unique costume and 8 percent prefer a sexy costume. The same types of costumes — unique, funny and sexy — are the best bets

if you’re looking to catch someone’s eye at a Halloween party. When asked what type of costume worn by someone else would make the best impression, 27 percent said a one-of-a-kind costume, while funny or sexy costumes were picked by 20 percent each. If you’re not sure what type of costume to wear for Halloween, you might consider looking online. Two out of every three people surveyed who plan to wear a costume and prefer doit-yourself costumes say they go to websites such as Pinterest, Facebook and YouTube for ideas. Don’t wait until it’s too late to get your Halloween costumes and decorations! Four out of 10 people surveyed who plan to purchase, re-use or create costumes for themselves or others in their household say they plan to start shopping for Halloween gear in the first two weeks of October. And nearly 40 percent of this same group will have started their costume material

shopping prior to October. “Goodwill is your go-to store for all your Halloween gear,” said Jim Gibbons, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries International. “Whether you’re looking for a costume that is fully designed and ready to wear or if you want to design one yourself, Goodwill will have just what you’re looking for, at a great price.” In fact, 38 percent of

those who wear Halloween costumes and prefer doit-yourself costumes say they or other household members shop for DIY costume materials at a thrift store such as Goodwill. Do Workers Have a Right to Class-Action Lawsuits?

The U.S. Supreme Court heard a case Monday that could affect whether nearly 25 million workers have the right to file class-action lawsuits against their employers. (Mark Wilson/Getty Images) By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE – Workers in Washington state and across the country watched the U.S. Supreme Court closely Monday as justices heard oral arguments in a case to determine whether employers can ban class-action lawsuits. The case, Epic Systems Corporation versus Lewis, involves arbitration agreements often found in the fine print

of employee contracts. About one-quarter of privatesector employees, or nearly 25 million Americans, have signed agreements that waive their right to sue employers collectively, according to the Economic Policy Institute. Elizabeth Hanley, an employment law attorney for Reed, Longyear, Malnati and Ahrens law firm, says class actions are important

in cases of wage theft. “There’s often very small amounts of money affecting many, many employees, and it can be cost-prohibitive for them to litigate them individually,” she explains. Epic Systems and other companies argue that employers need to know if class-action waivers in their workers’ contracts apply. If they don’t, the companies say,

that will change the employeremployee relationship. A decision on this case is expected at the end of the court’s session in June. During arguments, Justice Stephen Breyer said a ruling in favor of employers would rip out “the entire heart of the New Deal” and change our understanding of labor relations dating back to the Great Depression. Hanley says class actions have been important tools for workers in labor disputes. “I don’t think, without the weight of class actions, that you will be likely to see the enforcement of wage and hour laws or employers incentivized to change any unlawful practices,” she warns. The Epic Systems case, along with the two others to join it, deal with the conflict between two federal laws. The Federal Arbitration Act of 1925 favors arbitration. But the National Labor Relations Act of 1935 encourages workers to sue collectively in labor disputes.

Oil Train Project Stopped in its Tracks By Desert Star Staff NIPOMO, Calif. – A project to send hundreds of oil trains rumbling up and down the Central California Coast appears to be dead. The oil company announced Monday it is giving up the fight to secure county approval. Oil giant Phillips 66 has agreed to dismiss its lawsuit against San Luis Obispo County - that challenged the denial of permits to build a rail spur starting in Nipomo that would have facilitated transport of millions of gallons of flammable oil each year. Attorney Alicia Roessler with the Environmental Defense Center, who worked on the case, says residents from multiple cities opposed the oil train project for safety reasons. “And it’s just a very, very dangerous project that has significant hazards from dangerous explosions, and these rail trains have horrific rail accidents and just a terrible record for that,” she explains.

Oil-train projects have run into local opposition in Benicia, in the Bay Area, and in Central and Southern California. (Vladyslav Danilin) In 2013, an oil train derailment caused a massive fire in Quebec that killed 47 people. Phillips 66 has said the line would diversify oil supply in the state. Roessler notes that this project would have allowed more than 2 million gallons of

oil to pass through dozens of communities every week. “If the project was approved it would have allowed up to five 80-car trains each carrying more than 26,000 gallons of crude oil through Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties

each week,” she says. Multiple community groups opposed the project, including the Surfrider Foundation, the Sierra Club, the Center for Biological Diversity, Stand. Earth and Communities for a Better Environment.

You burn yourself often in the fire of risk taking. Then you feel a drop of rain and the fire is extinguished. You rise up from the flames, creating always a new self within. This is due to Mars, the life-giving energies propelling you in new directions, often unknown. There are snakes like jewels around your neck. They protect you. Think of these as your spiritual talisman and amulets.

TAURUS Often you battle with the serpent of time. Always having the sense there isn’t enough time. Feeling so often pressured by time. It’s good to have a talk with Saturn, god of time. At each new and full moon standing at our altars, reflecting upon the days, weeks and months, we sense the rhythm of essential beingness. Constructing enclosures with altars for ritual creates a new welllighted house to live within.

Phylicia Rashad Is Brilliant in Taper’s ‘Head of Passes’

L-R: Kyle Beltran, John Earl Jelks, Phylicia Rashad and Jacqueline Williams in “Head of Passes” Photo by Craig Schwartz. Tarell Alvin McCraney, co-writer of the Oscarwinning film “Moonlight,” is predominantly a playwright. His latest theatrical work “Head of Passes,” now at the Mark Taper, was commissioned by the Steppenwolf Theatre Company that wanted a play based on the biblical Book of Job. To work with a concept for the play, he and director Tina Landau spent two weeks in a cast “just reading the Book of Job and then trying to decipher its makeup.” According to McCraney ”The idea of opening up the dialogue about a person’s individual faith was and is always the main focus of the piece…. It is a story about someone’s personal faith, and how they use it as a guide to try to understand the many, many, sometimes fraught, generally beautiful often chaotic events of our lives. Of human existence. Not just our lives,

but other people’s lives. And what is that struggle? To maintain an ability not to know all the answers, but also not to try to abandon the notion of life. To really stay in it, to figure out what you know and what you don’t know, and what you never will know. Trying to find some balance in that.” Then using all the insights gained from the biblical Job, he crafted his play and set it near the Head of Passes where the Mississippi River meets the Gulf of Mexico. And like the recent terrible storms that have ravaged Houston and Puerto Rico, the play takes place during a fierce storm that is wreaking havoc on Shelah’s home, once was a prosperous B&B. As Act One begins, Shelah (Phylicia Rashad, TVs “The Cosby Show” and countless Broadway productions) is having a heartfelt conversation with God. Not only is her

house starting to fall apart, so is her life. She is deathly ill and this evening at her birthday

A surprise visitor is Dr. Anderson (James Carpenter) who wants to let the family know how grave Shelah’s situation is, but she forbids him from saying anything. She will do it in her own way. Additionally, in attendance are Creaker (John Earl Jelks) a worker from their bed and breakfast days, along with his son Crier (Kyle Beltran). Jacqueline Williams rounds out the cast as Mae, a role she originated at Steppenwolf. With the eventual arrival of Cookie, the party literally falls apart as she arouses great anger in her older brother Aubrey, who never wanted her to come in the first place. The party has turned into a disaster and soon Shelah is left

we, like Shellah, learn about them at the start of Act Two as they are quickly mumbled to Shelah by Crier who has come with others who were at the birthday event. A fierce and totally distraught Shelah screams at them, telling them to leave her alone. When they go Rashad goes into a long, raging, heart-broken dialogue with God begging Him for answers to the terrible events that have come to pass. For almost the entire second act she is alone on stage with her unseen God. Her soliloquy is a brilliant tour de force as she cries, then pleads for answers to the Job-like miseries that have befallen her and those she loves. Her stirring performance brought down the house on opening night as she came out to take her well-deserved bows along with the rest of the cast.

Country star Jason Aldean issues rallying cry for unity By KMIR News Country star Jason Aldean says he’s praying for the victims of the Las Vegas shootings, saying his “heart aches” and issuing a rallying cry for Americans to come together. The singer writes something has “changed” in the world, making it “the

kind of place I am afraid to raise my children in.” “At the end of the day we aren’t Democrats or Republicans, whites or blacks, men or women. We are all humans and we are all Americans and it’s time to start acting like it and stand together as one!” Aldean was onstage

Sunday when a gunman shot at a crowded music festival. “My heart aches for the victims and their families of this senseless act,” Aldean wrote on Instagram , adding: “Time to come together and stop the hate!” Source: KMIR/AP

‘Act of pure evil’: Trump on Las Vegas shooting

By Desert Star Staff US President Donald Trump addressed the nation about the attack in Las Vegas, Nevada – the deadliest mass shooting in US history. Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) has claimed responsibility for the attack that left 58 killed and over 500 injured. Calling the attack an “act of pure evil,” Trump said he has ordered the US flag to be flown at halfstaff to honor the fallen. The president also

said he will be visiting Las Vegas on Wednesday to meet with the survivors and families of the victims. “Though we feel such great anger at the senseless murder of our fellow citizens, it is our love that defines us today and always will, forever,” Trump said. “We pray for the entire nation to find unity and peace, and we pray for the day when evil is banished and the innocent are safe from hatred and fear.” Witnesses to the

By Desert Star Staff Eyewitness have recounted the “horror” of the mass shooting at a music festival in Las Vegas which has left 58 people dead and 515 injured. Police have confirmed that the suspected shooter is dead. “It was a horror show,” Ivetta Saldana told the Las Vegas Review Journal. “People were standing around, then they hit the floor.” “It was bad, there was multiple people hit, a lot of people shot,” a former marine who was working security at the event told Fox News. “The area that we had for medics at the event was completely flooded with people. I myself, with other people, carried at least four or five people to the EMT area.” The man went on to describe how people were injured in the panic that ensued. “There was two people that

I know for sure were trampled. One gentleman was shot in the top of the head, another was shot in the leg, a lady was shot in her side,” he said. “Another lady that caught a round to the side of the head, it was an ugly scene.” Another witness, speaking to ABC News, described how “chaotic” the scene was as the incident unfolded. “It kind of sounded like some fireworks going off and then I think there was the first volley [of shots] and all of a sudden a second volley and my buddy’s like ‘I just got hit’. He got hit three times and then people started diving for the ground,” he said. “It was pretty much chaotic, lots of people got hit. It took a while to get them out, we took them over the fence and hide under the stage for a while to be safe. “We finally got an

ambulance out on the street and got two of the guys in and basically the one guy ended up dying in my arms, then my buddy got in. I just got a message from him and he’s going to be okay.” Eyewitness, Megan

Kearney, speaking to NBC, said she also initially thought the sound was some kind of fireworks: “We heard what sounded like firecrackers going off. Then I heard it again, it was sort of quiet and then I

heard what sounded like a machine gun and people just started screaming that they were hit and to get down and then about 20 seconds after that we heard a round of machine guns and people were just dropping.”

By Desert Star Staff The Las Vegas shooter, who killed 58 people and injured hundreds more, did so on behalf of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), according to an IS-affiliated website. The FBI says the perpetrator had no connections to international terrorist groups. Islamic State (IS, formerly

ISIS/ISIL) has claimed responsibility for the mass shooting in Las Vegas, believed to be the deadliest in modern US history. “The Las Vegas attack was carried out by a soldier of the Islamic State and he carried it out in response to calls to target states of the coalition,” Reuters

cited the Amaq, IS-affiliated website. “The Las Vegas attacker converted to Islam a few months ago.” The terrorist group did not name the attacker but claimed that he “executed the operation in response to calls to target countries of the coalition.” However, no proof was provided to

back the terrorists’ claims. The attacker did not affiliate himself with any political or religious group, the brother of the gunman, Eric Paddock, from Orlando, said. “No religious affiliation. No political affiliation,” he told CBS News. Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said authorities believe it

was a “lone wolf” attack. US security agencies are assessing the IS claim but have not verified it, Reuters reports, citing officials. Two unnamed senior US officials told Reuters that no evidence suggested a connection between the shooter and any international militant group.

shooting at the country music festival in Las Vegas described rapid gunfire that lasted around five minutes. The shooter, who was identified as Stephen Paddock, 64, unleashed the hailstorm of bullets on the concertgoers from the 32nd floor of the nearby Mandalay Bay hotel, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said. Over 50 people were killed and hundreds were wounded. Inside Paddock’s hotel

room, police found a cache of weapons, including 10 rifles, according to Lombardo. “We believe the individual killed himself prior to our entry,” the sheriff said. As of Monday afternoon, authorities believed that Paddock was the “sole aggressor.” There has been no indication of Paddock’s connections with any international terrorist organizations so far, the FBI said on Monday afternoon.

Islamic State (IS also known as ISIS/ISIL) has claimed that the Las Vegas shooter acted on behalf of the terrorist group, but offered no evidence to back up the claim. With the investigation into Paddock’s motives ongoing, there were no early signs of any ties to radical Islamic groups or signs of radicalization, a US official told CBS News.

suspect, believed to be a local resident, on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino, just across the street from the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival. Several officers from the Bakersfield Police Department were attending the music concert when the assailant opened fire. One was shot and taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. University Medical Center spokeswoman Danita Cohen told the Los Angeles Times that the hospital is still evaluating the condition of “many patients” with gunshot injuries. There were reportedly so many gunshot victims that local residents took injured people to the emergency room in their cars. Lombardo said this appears to be a ‘lone wolf’ attack, with the suspect believed not to be connected to any militant organization. Two off-duty police officers were killed in the attack, he confirmed. A third is in a critical condition, and a fourth was wounded. “We have no idea what his belief system was,” Lombardo told reporters. “Right now, we believe he

was the sole aggressor and the scene is static.” The shooter appeared to be using an automatic weapon, according to witness reports. “There was blood everywhere,” one witness said. “People were hit within 20 feet of us,” witness Rick Messick, who said he was in the front row of the concert, told CBS2. “There were several people laying in the parking lot … they were trying to stop the bleeding,” he added. Jose Baggett, 31, a Las Vegas resident, said he and a friend were in the lobby of the Luxor hotel-casino, north of the festival venue, when people started crying and running in all directions. As Baggett and his friend walked away, they saw police checkpoints with officers carrying shotguns and assault rifles. “There were armored personnel vehicles, SWAT vehicles, ambulances, and at least a half-mile of police cars,’’ Baggett told AP. Footage emerged on social media apparently showing people fleeing the concert venue. The video was filmed by Twitter user Eiki Hrafnsson, who says that he is currently at

Petty suffered cardiac arrest early Monday morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center, where, after time on life support, he died peacefully at 8:40 p.m. Monday, surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends, said Tony Dimitriades, longtime manager for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. ``It’s shocking, crushing news,” Petty’s friend and Traveling Wilburys bandmate Bob Dylan said in a statement to Rolling Stone in a statement. “I thought the world of Tom. He was a great performer, full of the light, a friend, and I’ll never forget him.” Tweeted the E Street Band’s Steven Van Zandt: ``Man this cannot be happening. Not Tom Petty please. Our deepest love and condolences to his family and band. A brother and true believer.’’ Added Ringo Starr, also on Twitter: ``God bless Tom Petty... I’m sure going to miss you Tom.’’ Alice Cooper tweeted:

``It is so rare to find someone who commands such universal respect in the business. He was a rock n roll lifer with music in his blood. This man delivered a wealth of great songs to his fans and to the world and that is something to celebrate.’’ Def Leppard singer Joe Elliott also took to Twitter, writing that ``Through his work with the Heartbreakers and The Traveling Wilburys he’s left us with an incredibly legacy to enjoy forever, it’s such a shame he has left us way before his time.’’ Added Guns n’ Roses guitarist Slash on Instagram: ``Devastating news about #TomPetty A profound loss. Sad sad day today. RIP.’’ Eric Clapton, rock royalty to millions of fans, expressed sadness, telling the Associated Press: ``I’m shocked and saddened by the news of Tom’s passing, he’s such a huge part of our musical history, there’ll never be another like him.’’ Some celebrities noted that Petty’s death came in the aftermath of the massacre in Las Vegas. ``Just when I thought today could not get any worse,’’ tweeted Kid Rock. ``R.I.P. Tom Petty. Thank you for your beautiful music and inspiration.’’

Sheryl Crow was in a similar frame of mind. ``This is unbearable,’’ she tweeted. ``Vegas and now a great music hero has passed. You brought us so much joy, @tompetty. We will miss you. #RIPTomPetty.’’ John Mayer, who has covered Petty’s ``Free Fallin,’’ tweeted that ``I loved Tom Petty and I covered his songs because I wanted know what it felt like to fly. `You belong somewhere you feel free.’’’ Recording Academy President and CEO Neil Portnow described Petty as

The Battle of the Sexes

Connie Spooner, Rosie Casals, Dr. Raj Sinha and Diana Braun. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause A new movie about the Battle of the Sexes from the 70s premiered in the Desert at the Century Theatre. The movie brought one of the original nine tennis players portrayed in the movie to the theater. The battle between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs made history back in 1973 when King beat Riggs in straight sets. This was hyped as the greatest tournament in the history of Tennis. If King had lost it would have been a considerable defeat for women’s tennis and equal pay. It was the start of a extreme movement in women’s search for parity in sports and same pay for playing tennis. To see this movie brought forth 43

years after the fact says a lot about the courage of women who were willing to risk it all for what they believed. Women tennis players get equal pay in all tournaments today. Rosie Casals was one of the original nine women tennis players who left the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association to form their own tour. They were protesting the fact that women in tennis were getting a pittance compared to what men were earning. With the help of Virginia Slims they struggled to get close to men’s purses. Casals is a winning tennis player who has received many honors in her career. She won many tournaments both as a single player and

a double’s player with Billie Jean King. Casals and King and seven other players back in the 70s made history when they tried to get equal pay for playing tennis tournaments. Casals said that back then people didn’t think women should even be in sports let alone get same pay. She said she was always very athletic and tennis came easy to her. Playing doubles with King taught her a lot, but her father was the one who got her started and was her first instructor. Casals did a Q & A for over an hour answering the many questions from the crowd that gathered at new Aqua California Bistro after the movie. Casals is portrayed in October 4, 2017

an icon, saying in a statement: ``Tom was a true rock and roll purist, both in his music and his defiant spirit. ``With the Heartbreakers, his infectious riffs, rebellious personality, and inventive songwriting brought a new urgency to rock traditions and fueled a now legendary career and some of the most memorable music of the last four decades.’’ Petty’s last stage appearance took place Sept. 25 at the Hollywood Bowl, the last of three sold-out shows there

marking the finale of the band’s extensive North American tour celebrating the 40th anniversary of their self-titled debut album. Petty once said, ``I’d like to see us break some new ground and leave some sort of mark on the music. That would be the nicest thing -- to give something back, as noble as it sounds. If you could make some little dent in rock, where that little area is yours -- that’s what I’m striving for now.’’ Source KMIR

Rosie Casals and Leighton Ginn. Photo by Pat Krause the movie by Natalie Morales. Casals said she found the movie to be pretty close to the battle for equality they fought back then. She said it was a funny feeling to see herself portrayed in a movie. She said it was uncomfortable to be paired with Howard Cosell on the night of the Battle of the Sexes as he knew nothing about tennis. She commented on Marilyn, who was portrayed in the film and said the movie said she was a nice person, but in reality, she was not. Casals hopes the movie will be seen by the young women today as the fight for equality is not over. There is

a lot more to be done. She feels the tennis players of today get equal pay but don’t work on the equality part for all women. Casals and Tory Fretz have started a nonprofit, Love and Love Foundation, where kid’s ages 4 through 10 can get free tennis lessons and help if they have talent in that field. Free tennis clinics start in November at Monterey Country Club. Casals hosts an annual, Rosie Casals & Jackie Cooper Tennis tournament, as a fund-raiser for tennis in the Valley. Singer, Iris Williams, will be holding a benefit dinner on Oct. 28th at the Purple Room in Palm Springs. www.desertstarweekly.com

even more horrifying, “I ran over to her and when I came up to her I realized that she had been shot so I got down on the ground next to her and I just put my hands on her face she had been shot in the face,” she says her nurse’s

instinct kicked in immediately, “you now I was trying to be as comforting as I can I work at Desert Regional I work at the cancer center there and I just was telling her it’s okay we’re here I know CPR just hang on ... but at that time the shots just started firing again.” Amidst the chaos were many others with ties to the valley. A teacher from Amistad High School was shot. Desert Sands Unified School District tells us the teacher is Alexis Arias and thankfully does not have life threatening injuries. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department tells us several of their employees were at the concert. Two of them were hurt. One deputy is in critical condition, the other was treated and released. “We did have some employees that were attending

the concert and we have confirmed that one of our deputy sheriffs suffered injuries and is currently in critical condition at a local hospital there and we have confirmed that a correctional deputy was treated and released for some injuries as well,” says Deputy Armando Munoz, adding that they are hopeful the deputy will make a full recovery. The RCSD also sent a team to care for their deputies and families there and to support law enforcement with the investigation. We wish the deputy and teacher a full and speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected by this tragedy. If we forgot to mention anyone please send an email to news@ kmir.com. Source KMIR

Essential Concerts Films, Blues Album Make for Rockin’ October A trio of wonderful concert films are available on DVD and/ or blu-ray, while a celebrated blues troupe is back with a joyful celebration of the genre.

Artist: The Rolling Stones Title: From The Vault: Sticky Fingers Live At The Fonda Theatre 2015 (Eagle Rock Entertainment) You might like if you enjoy: The Rolling Stones Tell me more: On May 20, 2015, a fortunate group of lucky fans were treated to an intimate concert featuring the Rolling Stones at the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood. Now that already-legendary live event has been released as part of the Rolling Stones’ “From The Vault” series. Available in a variety of formats, the terrific “Sticky Fingers Live At The Fonda Theatre 2015” marked the first time in the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers’ career that the Rolling Stones performed the entire 1971 album “Sticky Fingers.” Additionally, this concert marked the official kick-off of the band’s North American Zip Code Tour. The audience is treated to terrific versions of many classics including the Americana-styled “Dead Flowers” and “Wild Horses,” the fiery rocker “Bitch,” jazz-tinged blues rocker “Can’t

You Hear Me Knocking,” and a Chicago blues romp through B.B. King’s “Rock Me Baby” featuring a lively harmonica solo courtesy of Mick Jagger. Bonus tracks include “All Down The Line,” “When The Whip Comes Down” and “I Can’t Turn You Loose.” In addition to the toptier performances of many of the Stones’ best songs, the DVD includes insightful interviews positioned before the band performances. For example, in one of the most revealing segments, guitarist Ronnie Wood discusses his respect for guitarist Mick Taylor (whom Wood replaced in the band). A must have film for Stones fans, “From The Vault: Sticky Fingers Live At The Fonda Theatre 2015” is available on DVD+CD, Blu-ray+CD, DVD+3LP and digital formats. Information: eagle-rock.com. Artists: Steve Lukather,

Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Joe Satriani, Slash, more Title: A Tribute to Les Paul (MVD Visual) You might like if you enjoy: Les Paul, Slash, Steve Lukather, Kenny

Wayne Shepherd Tell me more: Originally broadcast on AXS TV and staged as a live celebration for Les Paul’s 90th birthday in 2006 at Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, the special event featured performances by a number of the world’s greatest electric guitarists as they paid tribute to the legacy of the so-called “father of modern music.” Standout performances abound on this concert film now on DVD including Steve Lukather’s version of the Jimi Hendrix classic “Little Wing,” Joe Satriani tearing up on “Watch Boogie” and an amazing finale featuring a take on the early ‘70s hit “Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo” with Lukather and Kenny Wayne Shepherd trading some fiery guitar work while Edgar Winter provides lead vocals and stellar work with his saxophone. Other artists featured on the title include Slash, Joe Perry, Neal Schon, Buddy Guy and Robben Ford. Bonus features include some vintage footage of Les Paul performing early in his career and in 2006, as well as interviews with the guitarist/inventor. Information: icontvmusic.com.

Artist: Jeff Beck Title: Jeff Beck: Live At The

Hollywood Bowl (Eagle Rock Entertainment) You might like if you enjoy: Jeff Beck, Billy F. Gibbons, Jan Hammer, Beth Hart Tell me more: One of rock most original and influential electric guitar players, Jeff Beck’s long and wide-ranging career was fully captured in the summer of 2016 when he headlined at the Hollywood Bowl. Now, that special performance is available to enjoy via “Jeff Beck: Live At The Hollywood Bowl” on DVD+2CD, Blu-ray+2CD and several other formats. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as both a member of England’s Yardbirds and as a solo artist, the new concert film features live performances of material representing all eras of his 50-year career. In addition to rousing versions of Yardbirds cuts (“Heart Full Of Soul” and “For Your Love” thrill the crowd), he performs “The Revolution Will Be Televised” (off his then newlyreleased album “Loud Hailer”) and everything in between. Beck is joined by a number of illustrious musical friends during the night including keyboard virtuoso Jan Hammer, Chicago blues guitar great Buddy Guy, Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler and ZZ Top singer-guitarist Billy F. Gibbons. The concert concludes with a serious emotional one-two wallop — an instrumental version of the Fab Four’s “A Day in the Life” and fitting tribute to Prince (who had recently passed away) via a potent “Purple Rain.” Information: eagle-rock.com.

Artist: Rick Estrin & The Nightcats Title: Groovin’ In Greaseland (Alligator Records) You might like if you enjoy: Kid Ramos, Little Walter Tell me more: The latest disc from Rick Estrin & The Nightcats, “Groovin’ In Greaseland” is full of infectious, dance-minded blues songs delivered with an exuberant groove sure to please both casual and hardcore blues fans. With singer-harmonica player Rick Estrin at the helm, the surrounding group of strong players includes lead guitarist, keyboardist Lorenzo Farrell and drummer Alex Petersen. The far-flung material includes the moody “Tender Hearted” and “Another Lonesome Day,” the Chicago-styled blues romps “I Ain’t All That” and “Hands Of Time,” and pedal-to-the-medal instrumental “Mwah!” Rick Estrin & The Nightcats will celebrate the release of “Groovin’ In Greaseland” with a performance at the Riverside West Coast Blues Festival in Riverside, CA, on Oct. 14, 2017. Late-Term Abortion Ban Would Trump Coloradans’ Access

By Desert Star Staff DENVER – The U.S. House of Representatives is set to vote on a bill today that would prohibit abortions after 20 weeks. If the proposal becomes law, providers also could face fines and up to five years in prison. Karen Middleton, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado, notes that Colorado voters have made it clear they do not want to see access to abortion limited and have voted against similar restrictions three times. “Voters overwhelmingly, and in a bipartisan manner, say ‘no’ and have rejected any measure to restrict access,” she says. “We’ve had these conversations, we’ve had these elections and we actually know where we stand. And we October 4, 2017

want to make sure that our elected officials carry that message to Washington.” Middleton says the measure would supersede laws on the books in Colorado guaranteeing a woman’s right to abortion services. Proponents of the bill say it will protect women and claim fetuses can feel pain after 20 weeks. In a statement, Aurorabased obstetrician Dr. Rebecca Cohen argues that scientists have shown that fetal nerve pathways have not developed enough to conduct a pain signal by 20 weeks. Middleton notes the decision to terminate a pregnancy after 20 weeks is frequently made only after learning that the fetus will not survive to birth. She says forcing a woman to carry

a terminally ill pregnancy to term is misguided and puts women’s physical and mental health at risk. “I’m not sure why anyone thinks it’s appropriate to put themselves between a woman and her doctor in this situation,” she queries. “And to say that you’re making it better for women by making it harder for women is just a non-starter.” A similar measure cleared the House in 2015 but did not clear the Senate. If the new proposal wins a majority in the GOP-controlled House, the bill would need 60 votes in the Senate. President Trump has said he would sign the bill into law if it makes it to his desk.

Iran compliant with nuclear deal, we should ‘stay with’ it By Desert Star Staff The US should stay in the Iran nuclear deal, as Tehran has been found to be “compliant” with the agreement, Pentagon chief James Mattis said. President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to scrap what he has called the “worst deal ever negotiated.” “I believe that they [Iran] fundamentally are [in compliance]. There have been certainly some areas where they were not temporarily in that regard, but overall our intelligence community believes that they have been compliant and the IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency] also says so,” Mattis said during a House of Representatives hearing Tuesday. The point I would make is that if we can confirm that Iran is living by the agreement, if we can determine that this is in our best interest, then clearly, we should stay with it,” Mattis told the Senate Armed Services Committee. “I believe at this point in time, absent indications to the contrary, it is something that the president should consider staying with.” Iran is “not in a material breach of the agreement,” said General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. “I believe that [the

agreement] has delayed Iran’s nuclear program.” Under the deal negotiated in July 2015, Iran agreed to reduce the number of its uranium enrichment centrifuges by two-thirds, cap its enrichment below the level needed for weaponsgrade material, reduce its enriched uranium stockpile by 98 percent from around 10,000kg for 15 years, and allow international inspections. In exchange, much of the international sanctions against Tehran have been lifted. Some US sanctions, however, still remain in effect. On the campaign trail, Trump vowed to destroy the deal negotiated by the Obama administration, calling it “disastrous” while speaking before the American-Israeli lobby in Washington, DC. In February, he formally put Iran on notice for firing a ballistic missile, once again calling the deal “terrible.” Senior US officials have repeatedly accused Iran of violating the “spirit” of the nuclear deal by testing ballistic missiles. Tehran says its missile program is entirely unrelated. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani warned in September that Washington would pay a “high cost” if it pulled out of the nuclear deal. Quitting

U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis. © Omar Sobhani / Reuters the agreement would “yield no results for the US, but at the same time it will generally decrease and cut away and chip away at international trust” placed in Washington, the Iranian political leader said. Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has also said that Tehran would not tolerate US attempts to undermine the deal. President Trump’s stance on the deal has also been of concern for the EU, with the bloc’s foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini having pointed out the achievement

in striking the long-negotiated agreement belongs to the international community and not just the US. “It is a commitment undertaken by the entire international community on one side and Iran on the other, supported by a resolution of the UN Security Council,” Mogherini has said, calling the deal “a good and robust agreement that serves the interests of all parties.” In February, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said Tehran had been found in full

compliance with the nuclear deal. The watchdog’s report put Iran’s low-enriched uranium stockpile at only half of the permitted amount. In September, the UN watchdog monitoring Iran’s nuclear activities once again confirmed that the country is fully in compliance with its agreement with world powers. Tehran is not pursuing construction of its existing heavy water research reactor and has not enriched uranium above the agreed 3.67-percent limit, the report concluded.

Trump praises hurricane relief in Puerto Rico

US President Donald Trump, seated between Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello and first lady Melania Trump, gets a briefing on hurricane damage at Muniz Air National Guard Base in Carolina, Puerto Rico, US. October 3, 2017. © Jonathan Erns / Reuters By Desert Star Staff Visiting Puerto Rico to survey the devastation from Hurricane Maria, President Donald Trump praised the local and federal relief efforts that he said made the loss of life much smaller than during 2005’s Hurricane Katrina. The opposition Democrats have accused the Trump administration of a slow and inadequate response to disaster relief on the island, a US territory in the Caribbean battered by two major hurricanes last month. “I’ve been to Puerto Rico many times and the weather is second to none but sometimes you get hit – and you got hit,” Trump said on Tuesday, attending a briefing at the Muniz Air National Guard Base. The visit by the president and First Lady Melania Trump comes as local and federal officials are working to restore power and deliver food and supplies to the island’s 3.4 million residents.

The administration is preparing to ask Congress for $13 billion in aid for Puerto Rico and other areas hit by natural disasters, congressional sources told Reuters. It is estimated that recovery will likely cost more than $30 billion. “I hate to tell you Puerto Rico, but you’ve thrown our budget out of whack – because we have spent a lot of money on Puerto Rico. And that’s fine, we’ve saved a lot of lives,” Trump said. “Every death is a horror, but if you look at a real catastrophe like Katrina and you look at the tremendous hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people who died, and if you look at here, that was really a storm that just totally overpowered, never seen anything like this… What is your death count? Sixteen people versus in the thousands? You can be very proud of all your people, all of our people.” The latest death toll

stood at 24, as authorities struggled to re-establish communications and transport on the island. Wind and flooding damage from hurricanes Maria and Irma had destroyed Puerto Rico’s power grid, leaving millions without power. “Before we were hit by Maria, it was FEMA acting together and all the staff working together, during and after, and they continued to stay here through Maria,” said Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González-Colón, who represents Puerto Rico in the US Congress. “We are used to hurricanes but never before a Category 5, but all the time federal government [has been] by our side.” The comments by González-Colón and previous praise by Governor Ricardo Rosselló have stood in stark contrast with the statements made by Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz of San Juan. Cruz, a Democrat, blasted Trump on CNN

By Desert Star Staff Despite the $12.5 billion annual price tag for US involvement in Afghanistan, the US will continue its longest war indefinitely so that the Taliban don’t think they can “wait us out,” top Pentagon officials told Congress. A bolstered offensive against the Taliban will drive the insurgents to a reconciliation that will end the war, US Defense Secretary James Mattis told the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday, testifying alongside Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford. Previously, the Taliban had a timetable for the US leaving and it motivated them to fight, but they don’t have such a timetable anymore, Dunford said, explaining the new administration’s strategy to skeptical senators.

“We want them to have no hope of ever winning,” Mattis said. Many lawmakers at the hearing seemed to have lost hope for the US ever winning the 16-year war, the longest in American history, as they repeatedly asked if it was even winnable. “Yes,” Dunford replied. “We’re at a stalemate,” Mattis acknowledged. “We’re not at a point where we can bring an effective political solution to the war.” The US has concerns about Russia’s role in Afghanistan, Mattis told the senators, without elaborating what that role is and what exactly he was concerned about. “I’m concerned that Russia is not operating in its own best interest,” the defense secretary said.

During his visit to Afghanistan last week, Mattis accused Russia of supporting the Taliban. At the Senate hearing, however, he said, “I can’t define that support, we’re still getting intel.” Russia has called for a political solution that would involve the Taliban, on the condition that the insurgents sever terrorist links, bring armed resistance to an end, and respect Afghanistan’s constitution - a position that is almost identical to that stated by the US. However, Moscow criticized the Trump administration’s decision to send more troops to Afghanistan, calling it a “deadend approach” because it relies on the use of force. Nearly 2,400 American soldiers have died in the war, which began as a response to

last week, saying the government’s lack of help amounted to “genocide.” “If anybody out there is listening to us, we are dying, and you are killing us with the inefficiency,” she said Friday, touching off a Twitter feud with Trump. Cruz met with Trump on Tuesday and the two exchanged pleasantries. Before leaving Washington, Trump told reporters that the roads in Puerto Rico were cleared and communication capabilities were coming back on the island. He said the mayor had “come back a long way,” since her criticism, but was still critical about the local response, pointing out that many supplies are still sitting on the docks without trucks that would deliver them inland. “Their drivers have to start driving trucks,” he said. “So on a local level, they have to give us more help. But I will tell you – the first responders, the military, FEMA, they have done an incredible job in Puerto Rico.” Trump is due to meet with survivors of the disaster in Puerto Rico on Tuesday and take a helicopter tour to view the destruction. He is scheduled to visit Las Vegas, Nevada on Wednesday, to meet with survivors and families of the victims of Sunday night’s mass shooting. Hurricane Maria made landfall on Puerto Rico on September 20 as a Category 4 storm, with wind gusts of 113 mph (182 km/h) and rainfall peaking at 38.9 in (962 mm) and leading to widespread flooding.

Afghanistan’s harboring of AlQaeda after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001 and then morphed into a fight against the local Taliban to prevent them from regaining power. Afghan civilians have been hit the hardest – some 1,662 were killed in the first half of 2017 alone, according to a mid-year report by UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). In August, the US-backed government in Kabul controlled about 60 percent of the country – down from 65 percent the same time last year, according to the US military. Throughout the summer, the Taliban continued to seize ground. The US is estimated to have spent over $700 billion on military assistance, reconstruction and economic aid to Afghanistan over the past 16 years.

Nobel Prize winners find gravitational waves in space

Utah-born Kip Thorne wins the Nobel Prize for physics for his role in detecting gravitational waves

By Desert Star Staff Three US-based scientists won the Nobel Physics Prize for detecting faint ripples flying through space, the gravitational waves predicted a century ago by Albert Einstein. The discovery gives astronomers a a new way to view the universe. “It’s a win for the human race as a whole,” one of the recipients, Cal Tech’s Kip Thorne told AP. “The gravitational waves will be powerful ways for the human race to explore the universe.” The other recipients were Rainer Weiss, of the

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Barry Barish, also of the California Institute of Technology (Cal Tech), who were responsible for designing and developing the Laser Interferometer Gravitationalwave Observatory (LIGO). “I view this more as a thing that recognizes the work of a thousand people,” MIT’s Weiss told reporters at the announcement news conference. Gravitational waves are extremely faint ripples in space, generated by some of

the most violent events in the universe. The waves detected by the Nobel laureates in September 2015 came from the collision of two black holes some 1.3 billion light years away. A light year is about 5.88 trillion miles (9.5 trillion km). The discovery ushers in a new era of gravitationalwave astronomy and provides astronomers with a new set of tools to probe the cosmos. Astronomers previously relied on light,

x-rays, radio waves, and other types of electromagnetic radiation emanating from objects in space. “Now, astronomers can learn about cosmic objects through the quivers they made in space and time,”Cal Tech said in a news release. In describing the process to non-experts, the Swiss Royal Academy of Sciences said gravitational waves “are always created when a mass accelerates, like when

a ice-skater pirouettes or a pair of black holes rotate around each other.” The waves were predicted by Einstein in 1916 as part of his theory of general relativity, which argues that gravity is caused by heavy objects bending spacetime, which itself is the four-dimensional way that astronomers see the universe. The prize is “a win for Einstein, and a very big one,” Caltech’s Barish told the AP.
