French Quarter-set ‘House of the Rising Son’ Has Romance, Mystery
RANCHO MIRAGE –The Desert Rose Playhouse, a live stage company serving the Coachella Valley’s LGBT community, will present Tom Jacobson’s play “House of the Rising Son.” The production will open Friday, Sept. 27, for a fiveweek run concluding Oct. 27. “House of the Rising Son” channels the supernatural imagination of Anne Rice and the languid style of Tennessee Williams in a mysterious and decadent romance that evokes the steamy atmosphere of the French Quarter in New Orleans.
It’s a play Williams himself might have penned if not for the cultural strictures of his day. The action centers around parasitologist Dr. Trent Varro, who brings his younger lover Felix back to New Orleans to meet his wealthy relatives — the courtly but distant Garrett and the apparently homophobic Bowen. Ghostly sightings, gravestone rubbings and the unexpected revelations of an ancient and exceptional family dynasty ensue. “House of the Rising Son” was first produced by Ensemble Studio Theatre-LA (Gates
McFadden, artistic director; Laura Flanagan and Sarah Malkin, producing directors,) in the spring of 2011. The Desert Rose Playhouse, located at 69620 Highway 111 in Rancho Mirage, is a project of Desert Rose Productions, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit public benefit corporation. “House of the Rising Son” continues Desert Rose Productions’ mission to produce and present literate, relevant and entertaining plays and musicals to LGBT and gay-friendly theatergoers in the Coachella Valley.
The cast of “House of the Rising Son,” opening Sept. 27 at The Desert Rose Playhouse, includes (clockwise from top left) John Ferrare, Jeff Rosenberg, Garnett Smith and Terry Huber. Performances of “House evening performances; $25 for of the Rising Son” are Fridays Sunday matinees. To order, visit and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and desertroseplayhouse.org or call Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are 760-202-3000. $28 for Friday and Saturday

By Investigator Lance Colmer PALM DESERT – Based on recent local incidents, modernd a y criminals
increasingly are using stolen or counterfeit credit cards to purchase high-dollar items — and sticking someone else with the bill. A case in point… Earlier this month, officers from the Palm Desert Police Department (PDPD) responded to the 72300 block of Highway 111 regarding two subjects inside a store concealing merchandise. Upon arriving at the location, the officers contacted S a v i n a Hernandez, 31, and Michael Kumero, 34, both of Los Angeles. During the investigation, Hernandez a n d
Kumero apparently lied about their identity and provided officers with fake identification cards. Further investigation revealed that Hernandez and Kumero each had felony arrest warrants for theft and fraud-related offenses. Both were subsequently arrested. Officers, according to a PDPD release, found numerous counterfeit identification cards and credit cards in Hernandez and Kumero’s possession. During a search of Hernandez and Kumero’s rental vehicle, officers located several expensive items, which appeared to have been recently purchased. The Palm Desert Station Burglary Suppression Unit responded to assist in the investigation. Officers located hotel room keys belonging to Hernandez and Kumero, which then led officers to a room in Indian Wells. Officers responding to the room contacted an occupant, who was identified as
Miguel Rodriguez, 21, of Anaheim. Officers obtained a search warrant for both the rental vehicle and hotel room in order to locate additional evidence related to this case. During the subsequent search, officers seized items associated with credit card fraud and identity theft inside the hotel room. Hernandez and Kumero were arrested for the outstanding felony warrants, and additionally for commercial burglary and possession of stolen property. Rodriguez was arrested for possession of methamphetamine. All three subjects were transported and booked into the Riverside County Jail in Indio. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Deputy Vasquez of the Burglary Suppression Unit, 760-836-1600, or report it anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 760-341-STOP (7867).

stone in order to claim the throne of England. The combo set has many bonus features with animated magic aplenty, such as a new alternative opening in which Wart meets Merlin. There’s also “Music and Magic: The Sherman Brothers” and two bonus animated shorts, “Knight for a Day” and “Brave Little Tailor,” as well as a sing-along with the movie. “Robin Hood”: Marking its 40th anniversary with a Blu-ray release, this story concerns a dashing fox with a band of Merry Men who outwit the greedy Prince John. Robin also wins the paw of the very foxy Maid Marian. The package has bonuses galore, including the deleted storyline “Love Letters,” an alternate ending, a cartoon short titled “Ye Olden Days” starring Mickey Mouse, a Robin Hood Art Gallery and more. “Oliver & Company”: Last, but by no means least, Disney recognizes the 25th anniversary of a beloved kitten named Oliver and his adventures to find a home. This deluxe Blu-ray combo pack
is filled with fun and unforgettable songs by Billy Joel, Bette Midler and Huey Lewis. Alert young readers will spot the similarities in this animal fable to Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist,” even though it’s set in the heart of New York City, not London. Oliver is befriended by Dodger, a carefree pooch, and his family of misfit mutts. When Oliver gets adopted by a lonely little girl named Jenny his life is wonderful, but things change when a tough dog named Sykes and his Doberman gang try to keep Jenney and Oliver apart. Voices you will recognize in this production are Billy Joel as Dodger, Cheech Marin as Tito, Dom DeLuise as Fagin and Bette Midler as Georgette. Bonus material includes two cartoons — “Lend a Paw,” which won an Oscar as best animated short in 1941, and “Puss Café.” Several sing-alongs and a segment called “The Making of Oliver & Company” round out the package. Gather the kids around and settle in for a night of good, oldfashioned Disney enchantment.

• IVC (Inferior Vena Cava) filters are implanted medical devices, usually by interventional radiologists or sometimes by vascular surgeons, in order to prevent blood clots from reaching the lungs and heart.
• A significant number of certain types of defective IVC filters can cause serious health risks or death with or without prior symptoms. • The medical community and U.S. Food and Drug Administration have determined that leaving these filters in place for long periods of time may cause dangerous and potentially deadly complications and that these filters should be removed as soon as protection of blood clots is no longer needed. • The Inland Empire based medical product liability and consumer class action firm, McCuneWright, LLP, is investigating the dangers of the failure to remove these filters.
If you or someone you know has had an IVC filter implanted, whether it has been removed or is still in place, please contact McCuneWright at 909-557-1250 or visit our IVC filter website: www.ivcfilterlitigation.com

If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. Nine Simple Tips for Recycling at Home
Recycling is crucial to running a green home. It’s also an easy and effective way to reduce your weekly contribution to the local landfill. Unfortunately, many people either aren’t recycling as much as they could be, or are recycling the wrong way. A main reason for this is lack of access to accurate information. Even if you know the basics, you may have lingering questions. Covanta, a world leader and expert in sustainable waste management and renewable energy, offers helpful insights into common recycling questions: What cardboard is recyclable? All cardboard boxes except waxed can be recycled. In some communities, cardboard includes cereal, pasta or other food boxes. If possible, remove adhesive labels and tape prior to placing it in the recycling bin, as glue can interfere with the pulping process. Recycle the non-greasy portion of pizza boxes and discard the rest with the trash. Is wet newspaper recyclable? Paper fibers can only hold so much moisture. If wet paper arrives at the recycling facility, it may not absorb the chemicals needed to process the paper fibers into new products. Try to keep recycle-ready paper indoors until pick-up day. Should you remove plastic bottle caps and wine corks? Corks should be reused or thrown in the trash. Remove plastic caps so you can crush the plastic bottles, making it easy to fit more into the bin. Some caps are recyclable, but recycling centers often discard non-recyclable caps as trash. Can you recycle items that

Is crushing cans necessary? It’s not necessary to crush cans in preparation for recycling, but doing so makes room in your recycling bin and the transport truck, which means fewer trips to the recycling facility. How do you recycle batteries and electronics? Many municipalities are now recycling electronics. And some department stores, such as Best Buy, have take-back programs. Visit www. Call2Recycle.org to find your
nearest battery take-back location. Where do recyclables go? After curbside pick-up, recyclables go to an interim processor called a Materials Recovery Facility. There, they are sorted by machine and by hand using a conveyor belt. Separated recyclables are sent to a processing plant to be made into new products. Why recycle? Recycling preserves natural resources and is good for the economy, accounting for about one million manufacturing jobs nationwide, and generating more than $100 billion in revenue, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. What happens to waste
that’s not recycled? While some materials may be sent to landfills, the preferred option is an Energyfrom-Waste facility, which offers a safe, technologically advanced means of waste disposal that generates clean, renewable energy, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and recycles metal left over in household waste. More information about how recycling and Energy-from-Waste go together can be found at www. CovantaEnergy.com/virtualtour. Environmental stewardship starts at home. We must all take steps to educate ourselves on recycling.

By Jackie Devereaux PALM SPRINGS – The U.S. Supreme Court handed down a historic ruling on Wednesday, Jun. 26 to grant same sex marriages across the nation. In their ruling on DOMA and California’s Proposition 8, the justices overturned a previous lower court ruling which declared same sex marriage unconstitutional. Within minutes of the landmark ruling, local hoteliers and wedding planners scrambled to promote Palm Springs as a premiere wedding destination. “The Supreme Court’s
historic action today overturning DOMA and dismissing the appeal of California’s Proposition 8, clearing the way for same-sex marriage in our state is a huge victory for the LGBT community. This is about equal rights and I am gratified that the court has recognized that we are all the same,” said Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet. “My husband Christopher and I look forward to same-sex weddings commencing again in the state of California – and rest assured the City of Palm Springs will continue to be a destination committed to celebrating the
institution of marriage, both heterosexual and same-sex,” Pougnet said in a prepared statement “Riverside County is prepared to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and record their marriages immediately after the anticipated direction is received from the state and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Hopefully that day will be here soon,” said Supervisor John J. Benoit. “The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled on the matter of Hollingsworth v. Perry, making

Local Men Charged in Vanderbilt Rape Case By Jackie Devereaux PALM DESERT - The attorney for one of the men charged with allegedly tampering with evidence in a Vanderbilt rape case said his client, Joseph Dominick Quinzio, 20, of Palm Desert, received a video of the alleged rape through his phone as a text message. Criminal Defense Attorney Brett Greenfield with the Los Angeles law firm of Kenner and Greenfield admitted that his client, Quinzio, “saw the video
and became very disturbed.” Quinzio, along with Miles Finley, 19, of Bermuda Dunes are friends of Brandon Vandenburg, 20, of Indio. The three young men played football together at Xavier College Preparatory High School in Palm Desert. Vandenburg was arrested for five counts of rape and two counts of sexual battery against an unconscious 21-year-old female Vanderbilt student. Vandenburg is also charged with videotaping the female victim
and passing on those videos to others. The alleged rape and video tapping took place on June 23 in Tennessee. Greenfield said the video was sent to his client. Quinzio and Finley both are charged with tampering with electronic evidence and scheduled to appear in separate courtrooms on Tuesday, Aug. 20 for extradition hearings. “He’s (Quinzio) being accused of somehow tampering with or destroying evidence, and

German son seeks reunion with father By Jackie Devereaux Emin Bernd Alihodic was born on July 21, 1951 in Siegen, Germany and immigrated to the United States sometime in the late 1980s. Alihodic left behind two children and an ex-wife. His son, Jens (Alihodic) Luschnt, 35, came to Palm Springs on Monday, Aug. 12 to search for his biological father with only a
newspaper article describing how his dad was rescued twice off Mount San Jacinto on Feb. 9, 2009 and then again on May 13, 2010. Jens, who speaks little or no English, was adopted by his stepfather at the age of 10 and only knows a little about his biological father from stories his mother told him through the years. “I’d like to know more
about him. How’s he been living all these years,” the younger Alihodic said through a German/ English interpreter. Jens said he started looking for his father about a year and a half ago after meeting the love of his life, Karin Huebers. He and Karin want to start their own family soon and through her urging, they traveled to Palm Springs to search for his biological father. Continues on Page 4
nothing could be further than the truth,” Greenfield said. Nashville, Tennessee Metro police traveled to California in July to interview both Quinzio and Finley about their involvement with the cover up. Greenfield said his client was so disturbed by the video, that he went to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department on Friday, Aug. 16 and reported everything he knew. “Doing the right thing was what prompted him to go to the sheriff,” Greenfield said, knowing an investigation was going on. Greenfield said only when
Quinzio showed up to talk to investigators did he find out that there was a warrant for his arrest in Tennessee. “He (Quinzio) was simply sent a text message, unwanted, unsolicited, out of the blue, put in a terrible situation by someone who he thought was a friend,” Greenfield said. Quinzio is being held without bail at the Southwest Detention Center. Finley is being held at the Larson Justice Center in Indio without bail and is also expected to appear in court Tuesday.
