Story and Photos by Pat Krause PALM SPRINGS – Local World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley appeared at the opening of an acclaimed new film, “The Trials of

Muhammad Ali,” at the Camelot Theatres on Sept. 11. The Cathedral City native felt honored to be asked to address the audience prior to the showing of the documentary about the life and career of the world’s greatest boxer.

“The Trials of Muhammad Ali” follows the sometimes rocky rise and tribulations of the famous fighter who captured three heavyweight championship titles. Ali saw his share of controversy, changing his name from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali in the

1960s when he converted to Islam. He remained loyal to his beliefs when he went against the law and the U.S. in refusing to fight in the Viet Nam War and was sentenced to five years in prison. The sentence was eventually overturned and he

Officials Gradually Piece Together Portrait of Killer WASHINGTON, D.C. – The life of Aaron Alexis, the man who went on a killing spree at the Washington Navy Yard on Monday, has been described as a “study of contrasts,” from being heralded for his heroism on September 11, to having numerous run-ins with the law. It appears that the U.S. Navy Yard gunman had been treated since August by the Veterans Administration for serious mental illness, the Associated Press (AP) reported. He had apparently been ‘hearing voices,’ suffered from paranoia and a sleep disorder. As Desert Weekly News went

to press, U.S. authorities were still trying to piece together exactly who Aaron Alexis was, and what drove him to gun down 12 people in cold blood and injure another eight. However, they already had a rough sketch of the killer. Despite friends and neighbors describing Alexis as “nice,” his father once told detectives in Seattle his son had “anger management problems related to post-traumatic stress brought on by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001,” AP reported. He also complained about the Navy and being a “victim of discrimination.”

While many expressed initial fears that the incident was somehow connected to Islamic terrorism, the reality came as a shock. Alexis, a 34-year-old information technology specialist and former Navy reservist from 2007 to early 2011, was also a convert to Buddhism who grew up in New York City. Although Alexis had run-ins with the law over shooting incidents in 2004 and 2010 in Fort Worth, Texas, and Seattle, Wash., and was portrayed in police reports as “seething with anger,” it does not Continues on Page 9

He also noted Ali’s influence in the civil rights movement and how the boxer fought corruption in the world of boxing promotion. Bradley brought his wife Monica and daughter Alaysia with him to the theater. Prior to the screening, he met with philanthropists and Camelot owners Ric and Rozene Supple, who are also members of the Palm Springs Cultural Center.

Water and the Desert Homestead

Hunt In 1877, Congress passed the Desert Land Act, an amendment to the Homestead Act that recognized the immense variations of rainfall between western Indiana and all the lands west of the 98th meridian. It incorporated new requirements. For example, a married couple could receive 640 acres and would pay $1.25 an acre and promise to irrigate the land within three years. A great Catch-22 was embedded in this very question: How could one “irrigate” desert land unless next to a river or lake? This is why in California final desert land entries amounted to only two percent of original claims.

People who knew better objected to the government. John Wesley Powell, the first man to describe the aridity of the West, said, “I think it would almost be a criminal act to go on as we are doing now, and allow thousands and hundreds of thousands of people to establish homes where they cannot maintain themselves.” The first homestead claim on this side of the wash was in 1910. At that time people were unaware of the water that lay beneath the surface of the sand. Cabot Yerxa knew that until he found a way to “irrigate” his land, he could not claim ownership to it. But first things first, as I describe in my book “The Waters of Comfort (The Story of Desert Hot Springs, California)”: “The next step for him was to stake out the claim and file on it, which meant a trip to the post office in Los Angeles. ‘After that,’ Cabot adds, ‘I had less Cabot Yerxa, (1883-1965), historically referred to as the Father of Desert Hot Springs, homesteaded land on Miracle Hill from 1913 to 1918, and later wrote a long series of articles about his desert experiences that were published the Desert Sentinel newspaper. Cabot’s Museum Foundation has reprinted that series of articles in a book, “On the Desert Since 1913,” which is available at the museum trading post and on their website. were nailed in place, there was a minor battle to get them hitched to the wagon again so I could drive away. These two mules had been abused and mistreated to the point where they were resentful, suspicious, and outlaws. However, by kindness and fair treatment, in a few weeks I could walk in the stall without danger and harness with little trouble.

An Edgy â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Place Beyond Pinesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;

When it was released earlier this year, critics were fairly universal in their praise for â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Place Beyond the Pines,â&#x20AC;? now out on DVD and starring Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper. A.O. Scott of The New York Times called the film â&#x20AC;&#x153;refreshing and absorbing, with a lot to say about class, manhood and the curious operations of fate,â&#x20AC;? while Mary Pols of Time magazine described it as â&#x20AC;&#x153;a sprawling, engaging study in fathers, sons and sins.â&#x20AC;? The story begins by introducing us to Gosling, a fantastic stunt motorcyclist with a traveling circus. He has a fling with Eva Mendes while in town. A year later, when he returns, he discovers he has a son. He is determined to win back his ex-lover, who now lives with another man, and care for the boy. Unfortunately, his ability to earn money is limited, so he turns to robbing banks.

Reality Check for Real Estate Refi Scheme By Kevin Powell RICHMOND – This San Francisco Bay Area city recently outlined a creative way to offer underwater homeowners (50 percent of all mortgages in Richmond) some relief that could set a dangerous precedent throughout California, and beyond. Mayor Gayle McLaughlin stated that her city and its citizens were tired of waiting for federal help for struggling homeowners. She has proposed that the city use eminent domain to seize properties and then sell them to their current owners at steeply discounted values. “We’re not willing to back down on this,” McLaughlin said. “I’m very committed to this program and I’m committed to the well-being of our neighborhoods.” This may seem laudable. But it’s not without peril. Consider, for example, that McLaughlin has also reportedly proposed allowing homeowners who are current on their mortgages to be included in the program. McLaughlin suggests that the city buy loans at what it considers fair value. If a home had a mortgage of $400,000 but was worth only $200,000, the city would purchase the home for $160,000, or 80

reaffirm its stance in court. The risk that city officials are ignoring is that if they are successful at implementing this scheme, they would likely doom any future homeowners from being able to obtain a mortgage. Why would any bank ever make another loan in a town that had a history of such reckless behavior? And they could be putting existing homeowners in the position of never being able to sell their homes unless new buyers were paying with cash. The Federal Housing Finance Agency sent a strong message last week saying it would order Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to limit, restrict or cease business in any town that takes this action. New Youth-Aimed Play Offers ‘Hope’

This and future plays will engage local student‐actors and feature a thought‐provoking question and answer period following each performance. “Hope is the Thing with Feathers” begins as young Chloe finds the 100-year-old diary of a teenager named Maggie under the floorboards of her new home and becomes enthralled with the tale of the servant who lived in the house in 1901. The diary evokes scenes of Maggie’s life, moments of conflict, romance, tragedy and hope. Although the two teenagers live in different centuries, there are parallels in their lives — including traumatic loss. Santa Barbara’s Sun and Sand are a Blissful Escape By Pamela Price When the temperature and humidity rise in the desert, the alternative is obvious — the beach! Santa Barbara has an abundance of beaches and you can get there in around three hours from the desert if you time it right (a noon arrival is ideal). Better known as “The American Riviera” by admirers, this seaside city has one foot in the past, the other in the present. On my first visit in 1967, a guest room overlooking the ocean on East Beach at the Ming Tree, a “motel” (now the Cabrillo Inn) was just $12 a night. Times and hotel rates have changed, of course, but the lure of beach culture persists. From Butterfly Beach near the Four Seasons Resort in Montecito to Haskell’s Beach by the Bacara Resort & Spa near UCSB, the

travel Santa Barbara coastline is sheer poetry for beach lovers. After the long stretches from Goleta, the secluded coves at El Capitan and “uncrowded” waves beckon. Leadbetter Beach, around the north cove, is a diver’s paradise, while surfers gravitate to Hammonds, Campus Point and Shark’s Cove. Families find Carpinteria State Beach (which proudly proclaims itself “The World’s Safest Beach”) reassuring as well as fun. The Rincon at Santa Barbara’s southern entrance still reigns as the Queen of California winter surfing. The 171-room Hyatt Santa Barbara on East Beach, rated

Police eventually arrested Alexis and booked him into the King County Jail for “malicious mischief” after finding a gun and ammunition in his room. According to the police report, Alexis told investigators he felt he had been “mocked” by construction workers the morning of the incident. Alexis also claimed he had an anger-fueled “blackout,” and could not remember firing his gun at the vehicle until an hour after the incident. On May 5, 2007, Alexis enlisted in the Navy reserves, serving through to 2011, according to Navy spokeswoman Lt. Megan Shutka. While in the reserves, Alexis received the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, medals issued to personnel who served abroad and in the United States since the 9/11 attacks. It was during this time that Alexis had another run-in with the law after a neighbor who lived above him reported she had been nearly struck by a bullet shot from his apartment. Alexis was arrested on suspicion of discharging a firearm, but Tarrant County district attorney’s spokeswoman Melody McDonald Lanier said the case was thrown out after it was determined the weapon discharged accidentally. Monday’s shooting in Washington comes less than a month after a military panel recommended the death sentence for U.S. military Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan, who killed 13 and injured 30 others at the Fort Hood military base in Texas on November 2009.

California Ballet Opera Holds Auditions INDIO – California Ballet Opera (CBO) is holding open auditions for “The Swingin’ Nutcracker,” their unique version of the Christmas classic that will run from Dec. 20-22. The beloved ballet’s wellknown score has been adapted to swing and jazz and is guaranteed to have the audience smiling and tapping their toes. CBO is looking for talented classical dancers, ballroom dancers and actors of all ages to complete the cast. Dancers do not have to be training at CBO to audition. Oktoberfest Celebration ‘Beer’-ing Up

PALM SPRINGS – Oktoberfest Palm Springs is a unique Bavarianstyle festival showcasing more than 50 German and Bavarian beers, micro-breweries, food and wine-tasting booths. Get ready for a “Taste of Europe” on Saturday, Oct. 19, from noon to 6 p.m. Located in the heart of downtown Palm Springs, the festival will be held at the Spa Resort Casino — with spectacular views and walking distance to the varied shops, restaurants and

nightclubs of downtown. Live entertainment on two stages will include polka and Celtic bands, jazz and modern music. Since 1994, the sterilization surgery has required the signature of a medical official from the state capital for each and every instance. According to documents obtained by journalists, however, no such records exist. Dr. Ricki Barnett, the

physician who tracks medical services and costs for the California Prison Health Care Receivership Corp, told the Center that the health care committee responsible for authorizing those surgeries have not seen a single request. The papers obtained by the investigators suggest something much to the contrary, though, with records indicating that physicians contracted by the state earned $147,460 in local funds to perform those surgeries between 1997 and 2010.

In their ruling on DOMA and California’s Proposition 8, the justices overturned a previous lower court ruling which declared same sex marriage unconstitutional. Within minutes of the landmark ruling, local hoteliers and wedding planners scrambled to promote Palm Springs as a premiere wedding destination. “The Supreme Court’s

historic action today overturning DOMA and dismissing the appeal of California’s Proposition 8, clearing the way for same-sex marriage in our state is a huge victory for the LGBT community. Local Men Charged in Vanderbilt Rape Case By Jackie Devereaux PALM DESERT - The attorney for one of the men charged with allegedly tampering with evidence in a Vanderbilt rape case said his client, Joseph Dominick Quinzio, 20, of Palm Desert, received a video of the alleged rape through his phone as a text message. Criminal Defense Attorney Brett Greenfield with the Los Angeles law firm of Kenner and Greenfield admitted that his client, Quinzio, “saw the video

and became very disturbed.” Quinzio, along with Miles Finley, 19, of Bermuda Dunes are friends of Brandon Vandenburg, 20, of Indio. The three young men played football together at Xavier College Preparatory High School in Palm Desert. Vandenburg was arrested for five counts of rape and two counts of sexual battery against an unconscious 21-year-old female Vanderbilt student. Vandenburg is also charged with videotaping the female victim

and passing on those videos to others. The alleged rape and video tapping took place on June 23 in Tennessee. Greenfield said the video was sent to his client. Quinzio and Finley both are charged with tampering with electronic evidence and scheduled to appear in separate courtrooms on Tuesday, Aug. 20 for extradition hearings. “He’s (Quinzio) being accused of somehow tampering with or destroying evidence, and

Alihodic left behind two children and an ex-wife. His son, Jens (Alihodic) Luschnt, 35, came to Palm Springs on Monday, Aug. 12 to search for his biological father with only a

newspaper article describing how his dad was rescued twice off Mount San Jacinto on Feb. 9, 2009 and then again on May 13, 2010. Jens, who speaks little or no English, was adopted by his stepfather at the age of 10 and only knows a little about his biological father from stories his mother told him through the years. “I’d like to know more

about him. How’s he been living all these years,” the younger Alihodic said through a German/ English interpreter. Jens said he started looking for his father about a year and a half ago after meeting the love of his life, Karin Huebers.
