Local Boxer Timothy Bradley Heralds New Film About Muhammad Ali
Story and Photos by Pat Krause PALM SPRINGS – Local World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley appeared at the opening of an acclaimed new film, “The Trials of
Muhammad Ali,” at the Camelot Theatres on Sept. 11. The Cathedral City native felt honored to be asked to address the audience prior to the showing of the documentary about the life and career of the world’s greatest boxer.
“The Trials of Muhammad Ali” follows the sometimes rocky rise and tribulations of the famous fighter who captured three heavyweight championship titles. Ali saw his share of controversy, changing his name from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali in the

Officials Gradually Piece Together Portrait of Killer WASHINGTON, D.C. – The life of Aaron Alexis, the man who went on a killing spree at the Washington Navy Yard on Monday, has been described as a “study of contrasts,” from being heralded for his heroism on September 11, to having numerous run-ins with the law. It appears that the U.S. Navy Yard gunman had been treated since August by the Veterans Administration for serious mental illness, the Associated Press (AP) reported. He had apparently been ‘hearing voices,’ suffered from paranoia and a sleep disorder. As Desert Weekly News went
to press, U.S. authorities were still trying to piece together exactly who Aaron Alexis was, and what drove him to gun down 12 people in cold blood and injure another eight. However, they already had a rough sketch of the killer. Despite friends and neighbors describing Alexis as “nice,” his father once told detectives in Seattle his son had “anger management problems related to post-traumatic stress brought on by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001,” AP reported. He also complained about the Navy and being a “victim of discrimination.”
While many expressed initial fears that the incident was somehow connected to Islamic terrorism, the reality came as a shock. Alexis, a 34-year-old information technology specialist and former Navy reservist from 2007 to early 2011, was also a convert to Buddhism who grew up in New York City. Although Alexis had run-ins with the law over shooting incidents in 2004 and 2010 in Fort Worth, Texas, and Seattle, Wash., and was portrayed in police reports as “seething with anger,” it does not Continues on Page 9

Bradley spoke about his admiration and respect for Ali, and how Ali influenced his own career direction — discussing many of the events in the famous boxer’s life. He recounted how Ali got into boxing after someone stole his bike at age 12. “He wanted to whup the thief but had to learn to box first,” Bradley said. “It was the beginning of a huge career.” Bradley also respected Ali’s

He also noted Ali’s influence in the civil rights movement and how the boxer fought corruption in the world of boxing promotion. Fans of Bradley, including many members of the Boys and Girls Clubs, greeted him as he arrived at the Camelot. Some wanted autographs or photos, while others just wanted to shake his hand. Bradley brought his wife Monica and daughter Alaysia with him to the theater. Prior to the screening, he met with philanthropists and Camelot owners Ric and Rozene Supple, who are also members of the Palm Springs Cultural Center.

Water and the Desert Homestead
By John J. Hunt In 1877, Congress passed the Desert Land Act, an amendment to the Homestead Act that recognized the immense variations of rainfall between western Indiana and all the lands west of the 98th meridian. It incorporated new requirements. For example, a married couple could receive 640 acres and would pay $1.25 an acre and promise to irrigate the land within three years. A great Catch-22 was embedded in this very question: How could one “irrigate” desert land unless next to a river or lake? This is why in California final desert land entries amounted to only two percent of original claims.

People who knew better objected to the government. John Wesley Powell, the first man to describe the aridity of the West, said, “I think it would almost be a criminal act to go on as we are doing now, and allow thousands and hundreds of thousands of people to establish homes where they cannot maintain themselves.” The first homestead claim on this side of the wash was in 1910. At that time people were unaware of the water that lay beneath the surface of the sand. Cabot Yerxa knew that until he found a way to “irrigate” his land, he could not claim ownership to it. But first things first, as I describe in my book “The Waters of Comfort (The Story of Desert Hot Springs, California)”: “The next step for him was to stake out the claim and file on it, which meant a trip to the post office in Los Angeles. ‘After that,’ Cabot adds, ‘I had less Cabot Yerxa, (1883-1965), historically referred to as the Father of Desert Hot Springs, homesteaded land on Miracle Hill from 1913 to 1918, and later wrote a long series of articles about his desert experiences that were published the Desert Sentinel newspaper. Cabot’s Museum Foundation has reprinted that series of articles in a book, “On the Desert Since 1913,” which is available at the museum trading post and on their website. Here’s another installment from the historical book. (Introduction by Richard Brown, Cabot’s Museum Foundation Board Member)

Now, the law reads that homesteaders must live continuously on the land seven months of each year, for three years, cultivate twenty acres of soil, build a house, dig for water, build fences and otherwise show definite intention One blacksmith came out and held Mandy, while I took Tom in and chained him to the wall. Then Mandy was chained farther down on the wall. Now the two blacksmiths and I went to work to truss Tom up in such a way that he would be a good mule for the time being. Two four-by-six inch timbers were swung out from the wall, where they were securely hinged and ironed. One timber fitted closely on each side of the mule and extended four feet beyond his heels. Then the three of us working carefully put a leather-bound canvas sling under his belly. Ropes and chains were passed under this, round the side timbers, and over his back and well secured. Then by turning a crank slowly, Tom was lifted off the floor. There was a struggle here, but when tired
of making the claim into a home. And I had less than ten dollars.’ “So, his next move was to again leave the desert and search for work, at a time when hard laborers made 20¢ an hour. But his desire to support his claim, as well as the fact
that Cabot had been recently married and had a newborn on the way, spurred him to secure a position with the railroad.” Next week: Cabot returns to the desert…

Now came the ticklish part of the performance. We had to clamp each of the four feet into one of the iron arms. They held the hoof in a proper position to be shod. His head was chained to the floor. So thus fastened, all an animal could do was squeal and groan. The blacksmiths now proceeded with the shoeing operation. When [the] shoes
were nailed in place, there was a minor battle to get them hitched to the wagon again so I could drive away. These two mules had been abused and mistreated to the point where they were resentful, suspicious, and outlaws. However, by kindness and fair treatment, in a few weeks I could walk in the stall without danger and harness with little trouble.

An Edgy ‘Place Beyond Pines’
By Theda Kleinhans Reichman
When it was released earlier this year, critics were fairly universal in their praise for “The Place Beyond the Pines, now out on DVD and starring Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper. A.O. Scott of The New York Times called the film “refreshing and absorbing, with a lot to say about class, manhood and the curious operations of fate, while Mary Pols of Time magazine described it as “a sprawling, engaging study in fathers, sons and sins. The story begins by introducing us to Gosling, a fantastic stunt motorcyclist with a traveling circus. He has a fling with Eva Mendes while in town. A year later, when he returns, he discovers he has a son. He is determined to win back his ex-lover, who now lives with another man, and care for the boy. Unfortunately, his ability to earn money is limited, so he turns to robbing banks.
film
Bradley Cooper (nominated for an Oscar for his work in “Silver Lining Playbook) is an ambitious young cop struggling to make his way in a corrupt police department. Soon these two men’s lives intersect and the results of their shocking confrontation will impact another generation. Gosling’s character can be loving and gentle. He sincerely wants to give his baby son a better life than he had with his own dad, but his criminal escapades and outburst of rage prove disastrous. The film co-stars Ray Liotta (“Goodfellas). Bonus DVD features include deleted scenes and extended scenes as well as commentary with director/cowriter Derek Cianfrance. From Universal; rated R for language throughout, teenage drug and alcohol use, and some violence.

Reality Check for Real Estate Refi Scheme By Kevin Powell RICHMOND – This San Francisco Bay Area city recently outlined a creative way to offer underwater homeowners (50 percent of all mortgages in Richmond) some relief that could set a dangerous precedent throughout California, and beyond. Mayor Gayle McLaughlin stated that her city and its citizens were tired of waiting for federal help for struggling homeowners. She has proposed that the city use eminent domain to seize properties and then sell them to their current owners at steeply discounted values. “We’re not willing to back down on this,” McLaughlin said. “I’m very committed to this program and I’m committed to the well-being of our neighborhoods.” This may seem laudable. But it’s not without peril. Consider, for example, that McLaughlin has also reportedly proposed allowing homeowners who are current on their mortgages to be included in the program. McLaughlin suggests that the city buy loans at what it considers fair value. If a home had a mortgage of $400,000 but was worth only $200,000, the city would purchase the home for $160,000, or 80

reaffirm its stance in court. The risk that city officials are ignoring is that if they are successful at implementing this scheme, they would likely doom any future homeowners from being able to obtain a mortgage. Why would any bank ever make another loan in a town that had a history of such reckless behavior? And they could be putting existing homeowners in the position of never being able to sell their homes unless new buyers were paying with cash. The Federal Housing Finance Agency sent a strong message last week saying it would order Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to limit, restrict or cease business in any town that takes this action. Ben Franklin said it best more than 230 years ago: “Those who give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” Kevin Powell, a financial advisor for the past 28 years, can be reached at kpplanner1@aol.com

New Youth-Aimed Play Offers ‘Hope’
RANCHO MIRAGE – The Coachella Valley Repertory (CVR) is presenting a new work titled “Hope is the Thing with Feathers,” by Dorothea Cahan, through generous grants from
The Newman’s Own Foundation and The Fremont Foundation. It is the latest in the theatre company’s Children’s Outreach Production program. the play on Saturday, Sept. 28, at The public is invited to see 2 p.m. or 7 p.m., at the Coachella Valley Repertory Theater in the Rancho Mirage Atrium, 69‐930 Highway 111. All other performances from September 24‐27 and October 1‐4 are reserved for students from the Coachella Valley Unified School District, who will be bussed in to see the play free of charge. This and future plays will engage local student‐actors and feature a thought‐provoking question and answer period following each performance. “Hope is the Thing with Feathers” begins as young Chloe finds the 100-year-old diary of a teenager named Maggie under the floorboards of her new home and becomes enthralled with the tale of the servant who lived in the house in 1901. The diary evokes scenes of Maggie’s life, moments of conflict, romance, tragedy and hope. Although the two teenagers live in different centuries, there are parallels in their lives — including traumatic loss. Chloe feels an emotional bond with Maggie, which leads her to reconnect with her mother and confront new challenges in A moment from “Hope is the Thing with Feathers.” (Courtesy of Coachella Valley Repertory). her future.

Life’s a Beach
LATEST MASSACRE STUNS U.S. Continued from Page 1
Santa Barbara’s Sun and Sand are a Blissful Escape By Pamela Price When the temperature and humidity rise in the desert, the alternative is obvious — the beach! Santa Barbara has an abundance of beaches and you can get there in around three hours from the desert if you time it right (a noon arrival is ideal). Better known as “The American Riviera” by admirers, this seaside city has one foot in the past, the other in the present. On my first visit in 1967, a guest room overlooking the ocean on East Beach at the Ming Tree, a “motel” (now the Cabrillo Inn) was just $12 a night. Times and hotel rates have changed, of course, but the lure of beach culture persists. From Butterfly Beach near the Four Seasons Resort in Montecito to Haskell’s Beach by the Bacara Resort & Spa near UCSB, the
travel Santa Barbara coastline is sheer poetry for beach lovers. After the long stretches from Goleta, the secluded coves at El Capitan and “uncrowded” waves beckon. Leadbetter Beach, around the north cove, is a diver’s paradise, while surfers gravitate to Hammonds, Campus Point and Shark’s Cove. Families find Carpinteria State Beach (which proudly proclaims itself “The World’s Safest Beach”) reassuring as well as fun. The Rincon at Santa Barbara’s southern entrance still reigns as the Queen of California winter surfing. The 171-room Hyatt Santa Barbara on East Beach, rated
three stars by AAA, is situated across the street from the city’s original Bath House and is convenient for exploring all the area’s beaches. It is dog-friendly, and the unobstructed view from the property’s Santa Clara suite is mesmerizing — especially at sunset. Rates at fluctuate, but consider the “Bed and Breakfast” offer for $189 that adds a 2 p.m. check out. Cuisine at their Bistro 1111 features a daily happy hour with a $5 menu offering quesadillas, sliders and fish tacos, among other specialties. Deceased U.S. Navy Yard shooter Aaron Alexis in a Fort Worth Police Department file photo. seem the Navy had any misgivings about working with him. He reportedly had ‘secret’ clearance at the Navy Yard. U.S. officials are also trying to determine how the shooter managed to breach security at the Navy Yard armed, witnesses say, with an AR-15 assault rifle and a shotgun. Alexis was even able to wrestle a handgun from a police officer at the scene, according to two federal law enforcement officials who spoke on condition of anonymity, CNN reported. Alexis had a history of legal run-ins despite his apparent congenial demeanor. In 2004, Seattle police said Alexis was arrested for shooting out the tires of a vehicle in what he later described to police as an angerfueled “blackout,” AP reported. According to an account on the police department’s website, two construction workers had parked their car in the driveway of their worksite, next to a home where Alexis was staying. The workers reported seeing a man, later identified by police as Alexis, exit the home next to their worksite, pull a gun and fire three shots into the

rear tires of their vehicle before he walked slowly back to his home. Police eventually arrested Alexis and booked him into the King County Jail for “malicious mischief” after finding a gun and ammunition in his room. According to the police report, Alexis told investigators he felt he had been “mocked” by construction workers the morning of the incident. Alexis also claimed he had an anger-fueled “blackout,” and could not remember firing his gun at the vehicle until an hour after the incident. On May 5, 2007, Alexis enlisted in the Navy reserves, serving through to 2011, according to Navy spokeswoman Lt. Megan Shutka. While in the reserves, Alexis received the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, medals issued to personnel who served abroad and in the United States since the 9/11 attacks. Alexis’s last assignment was as aviation electricians mate 3rd class at the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth, according to AP. It was during this time that Alexis had another run-in with the law after a neighbor who lived above him reported she had been nearly struck by a bullet shot from his apartment. Fort Worth police questioned Alexis in September 2010 about the incident. He admitted to firing his weapon, but said the gun accidentally discharged while he was cleaning it. Alexis was arrested on suspicion of discharging a firearm, but Tarrant County district attorney’s spokeswoman Melody McDonald Lanier said the case was thrown out after it was determined the weapon discharged accidentally. Monday’s shooting in Washington comes less than a month after a military panel recommended the death sentence for U.S. military Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan, who killed 13 and injured 30 others at the Fort Hood military base in Texas on November 2009.

RANCHO MIRAGE –The Alzheimer’s Association envisions “a world without Alzheimer’s disease.” Across the globe some 35 million individuals and their families are affected by dementia. September is World Alzheimer’s Month, and communities throughout the U.S. are taking action. Across the desert, retail stores, restaurants and businesses will participate in “Paint the Town Purple” — posting an official purple poster in their windows to raise Alzheimer’s awareness. “We hope to inspire more people in our community to become aware of Alzheimer’s disease this month and take action to support the Alzheimer’s Association’s efforts in caring for local families,” said Anne Gimbel, Coachella Valley regional director. There are several ways local residents can get involved:
Become inspired: On Sept. 26, from 6-8 p.m., there will be a World Alzheimer’s Month panel discussion and artist reception at the Palm Springs Art Museum, Palm Desert. The event marks the premiere of a photographic exhibit by Cathy Greenblat, Ph.D., titled “Seeing Alzheimer’s Differently” — showing photos of persons with Alzheimer’s disease and caregivers from around the world. The evening is sponsored by the Auen Foundation. Gimbel will be on hand to talk about the Alzheimer’s Association. Go purple: Sept. 21 is Alzheimer’s Action Day. Local businesses and residents can participate by wearing purple. L e a r n m o re a b o u t Alzheimer’s disease: Visit alz.org/socal for more info about programs, support, and education that the Coachella Valley Regional Service Center
offers to some 11,000 local families affected by the disease. Learn the 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s. Join a walk team: Participate in the Coachella Valley’s 15th annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s on March 1, 2014, at the Palm Desert Civic Center Park. Join or form a team now by logging on to either alz.org/socal or alzla.org/walk/cv — and start fundraising today. The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the nation’s largest annual event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. More than 5 million people in the U.S. live with Alzheimer’s, the nation’s sixth leading cause of death — including more than half a million in California. efficiencies such as these trailers ultimately results in a benefit to not only to our crews in the field, but the greater community as well,” Allen said. “The Tribe’s giving has meant more than $1 million worth of support for our department over the past 17 years.” The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and the City of Palm Springs enjoy a longtime collaboration in working together to enhance public safety in Palm Springs. Over the years, the Tribe has provided funds for many public safety initiatives, including police officers, equipment and vehicles

It’s a play Williams himself might have penned if not for the cultural strictures of his day. The action centers around parasitologist Dr. Trent Varro, September 18, 2013

Tech Tips for a Successful School Year
An all-in-one portable desktop PC can help students streamline school work. The back to school season can be a hectic time for students. With dozens of assignments, tests and projects, it’s easy for some things to get lost in the chaos. It may start with one loose book or crumpled paper thrown into a locker or backpack, but it can quickly balloon into a disaster area without proper maintenance. Don’t let messes and disorganization stand in the way
of success in the classroom. New technologies and old organization tricks can help you stay neat and organized during the back to school season: Stay on Task: It is always smart for students to maintain a separate section in a notebook or binder for every class. If there are several parts to one class, keep a section in the binder for each part of that class. Avoid using a different binder for each class as often it is unnecessary and will
cause clutter. Get Desks in Shape: At home and at school, desks are a place for learning, concentration and personalization for students. A lot can be learned about a student’s personality by looking at items on top of the desk or inside the desk drawers. Students can keep their desks organized and show off their personal style by using a variety of web-connected printing solutions, gadgets with
touch technology and detachable hybrid PCs, such as those from HP. For example, with the HP ENVY 4500 e-All-in-One printer, students can save time creating lab-quality photos and laser sharp documents by printing from their smartphones, tablets and Internet-connected PCs. Connect in More Places: No matter if a student is in grade school, high school or college, having the right technology can
• Drawer lining: Dress up your drawers by lining the insides with your favorite scrapbook paper. Adhere the paper with double stick tape. • Liquid starch: Grab extra fabric and soak it in liquid starch to embellish storage boxes or any hardware around your apartment or rental home. • Removable Hooks: Use
adhesive hooks to secure wall decor or storage solutions without harming your walls. • Window box: Renters don’t always have the ability to plant an outdoor garden, but a beautiful window box garden can spruce up an apartment and create space to grow herbs and other small plants. help keep everything straight. An all-in-one desktop PC, such as the HP ENVY Rove20 All-in-One, will help streamline everything from research to art projects to book reports and study aids. With a versatile design and builtin battery, students can easily move it from room to room. For college students, a device like the HP Split x2 is great for getting things done. It transitions effortlessly from a notebook to a tablet so students can take notes in class and then go back to the dorm to web chat with their families. More information on technology that can help students succeed is available at www.HP.com. E-Books: Consider saving space in your locker, book bag or dorm room by opting for e-textbooks. Looking up unfamiliar words, taking notes, searching for passages and highlighting sections for later review is quick and easy on an e-reader. The school year doesn’t have to be filled with messes and clutter. There are always new ways to be productive, stay organized, and live connected throughout the school year. With just some focus, determination and the right tech tools, organization can easily be achieved. (StatePoint)
How to Make Your Space Feel Like Home Creative decorating solutions are needed when decorating your rental space. Make sure you are complying with the rental rules and regulations. “If you want to decorate your rental home, but aren’t permitted to make drastic changes to walls or fixtures, temporary décor solutions can help you bring style and personality to your space, without the worry of lasting damage.” says Wendy Froehlich, Vice President of Marketing at Homes.com, one of the nation’s top online real estate listing and lifestyle resources. With that in mind, Homes. com is offering tips to help you dream big when sprucing up your space: • Lovely lighting: If you ask, management companies or property owners may allow renters to switch out light fixtures. Ask before you remove and always keep the original fixture to leave behind should you move out. • Funky furniture: If painting the walls isn’t allowed, paint the furniture instead. Painted furniture will add a splash of color and personality to any space. • Wall Decals: Make a statement on your walls using fun wall decals to match your personality. If you decide to www.desertstarweekly.com

By Jackie Devereaux PALM SPRINGS – The U.S. Supreme Court handed down a historic ruling on Wednesday, Jun. 26 to grant same sex marriages across the nation. In their ruling on DOMA and California’s Proposition 8, the justices overturned a previous lower court ruling which declared same sex marriage unconstitutional. Within minutes of the landmark ruling, local hoteliers and wedding planners scrambled to promote Palm Springs as a premiere wedding destination. “The Supreme Court’s
historic action today overturning DOMA and dismissing the appeal of California’s Proposition 8, clearing the way for same-sex marriage in our state is a huge victory for the LGBT community. This is about equal rights and I am gratified that the court has recognized that we are all the same,” said Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet. “My husband Christopher and I look forward to same-sex weddings commencing again in the state of California – and rest assured the City of Palm Springs will continue to be a destination committed to celebrating the
institution of marriage, both heterosexual and same-sex,” Pougnet said in a prepared statement “Riverside County is prepared to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and record their marriages immediately after the anticipated direction is received from the state and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Hopefully that day will be here soon,” said Supervisor John J. Benoit. “The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled on the matter of Hollingsworth v. Perry, making

Local Men Charged in Vanderbilt Rape Case By Jackie Devereaux PALM DESERT - The attorney for one of the men charged with allegedly tampering with evidence in a Vanderbilt rape case said his client, Joseph Dominick Quinzio, 20, of Palm Desert, received a video of the alleged rape through his phone as a text message. Criminal Defense Attorney Brett Greenfield with the Los Angeles law firm of Kenner and Greenfield admitted that his client, Quinzio, “saw the video
and became very disturbed.” Quinzio, along with Miles Finley, 19, of Bermuda Dunes are friends of Brandon Vandenburg, 20, of Indio. The three young men played football together at Xavier College Preparatory High School in Palm Desert. Vandenburg was arrested for five counts of rape and two counts of sexual battery against an unconscious 21-year-old female Vanderbilt student. Vandenburg is also charged with videotaping the female victim
and passing on those videos to others. The alleged rape and video tapping took place on June 23 in Tennessee. Greenfield said the video was sent to his client. Quinzio and Finley both are charged with tampering with electronic evidence and scheduled to appear in separate courtrooms on Tuesday, Aug. 20 for extradition hearings. “He’s (Quinzio) being accused of somehow tampering with or destroying evidence, and

German son seeks reunion with father By Jackie Devereaux Emin Bernd Alihodic was born on July 21, 1951 in Siegen, Germany and immigrated to the United States sometime in the late 1980s. Alihodic left behind two children and an ex-wife. His son, Jens (Alihodic) Luschnt, 35, came to Palm Springs on Monday, Aug. 12 to search for his biological father with only a
newspaper article describing how his dad was rescued twice off Mount San Jacinto on Feb. 9, 2009 and then again on May 13, 2010. Jens, who speaks little or no English, was adopted by his stepfather at the age of 10 and only knows a little about his biological father from stories his mother told him through the years. “I’d like to know more
about him. How’s he been living all these years,” the younger Alihodic said through a German/ English interpreter. Jens said he started looking for his father about a year and a half ago after meeting the love of his life, Karin Huebers. He and Karin want to start their own family soon and through her urging, they traveled to Palm Springs to search for his biological father. Continues on Page 4
nothing could be further than the truth,” Greenfield said. Nashville, Tennessee Metro police traveled to California in July to interview both Quinzio and Finley about their involvement with the cover up. Greenfield said his client was so disturbed by the video, that he went to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department on Friday, Aug. 16 and reported everything he knew. “Doing the right thing was what prompted him to go to the sheriff,” Greenfield said, knowing an investigation was going on. Greenfield said only when
Quinzio showed up to talk to investigators did he find out that there was a warrant for his arrest in Tennessee. “He (Quinzio) was simply sent a text message, unwanted, unsolicited, out of the blue, put in a terrible situation by someone who he thought was a friend,” Greenfield said. Quinzio is being held without bail at the Southwest Detention Center. Finley is being held at the Larson Justice Center in Indio without bail and is also expected to appear in court Tuesday.
