Get Back in Your Favorite Jeans With These Weight Loss Tips
By Desert Star Staff Do you have a favorite pair of jeans sitting in your closet with the hopes that one day they will fit again? You’re not alone! American women want to lose an average of 16.8 pounds
to fit into their favorite pair of jeans and nearly 39 percent say they like to keep jeans in their closet that don’t fit to motivate them to lose weight, according to a survey by Nutrisystem. And while trying on jeans that don’t fit from the back
of your closet or even a new pair at the store can be frustrating, being equipped with the right tips can help you get on the weight loss track and back in those jeans. 1. Eat Smart and Often. Aim to eat smaller meals every
two to three hours, six times a day so that you don’t binge or overdo it. You’ll feel full and satisfied, which will help you make smarter choices. 2. Keep the Good Stuff Where You Can See it. It may sound overly simple but it’s true, you are more likely to eat healthy foods if you put them in a visible, easyto-reach location. And for the fridge? Don’t put your fruits and veggies in the produce bin! The middle shelf is the sweet spot. That’s where to keep your celery, carrots, apples, oranges and all that good stuff. 3. Don’t Go It Alone. Losing weight isn’t exactly a cakewalk. But it doesn’t have to be impossible. Find a weight loss plan that works for you and fits in with your lifestyle. Programs like Nutrisystem ensure you feel satisfied throughout the day and take the guesswork out of dieting, making it easier to stick with the plan and drop those pounds. 4. Drink Up. Hunger and
thirst are easily confused, so stay hydrated. But don’t make the mistake of drinking your calories,” says Courtney McCormick, dietitian at Nutrisystem. Opt for water. If you’re looking for a more flavorful option, add fresh fruit slices, a few squeezes of lemon or some sprigs of mint leaves. 5. Find Your Routine and Stick With it. It’s important to make a plan for what you’ll eat and when you’ll exercise each week. Carve out part of your day that works for your schedule and you’ll be much more likely to follow through. You owe it to yourself to focus on your health. Making changes is never easy at first, but hang in there. Your results will fuel your continued commitment. How to Re-Watch Hollywood History
Photo courtesy of Getty Images (family watching TV) By Desert Star Staff Streaming media is transforming TV and movie watching, but the convenience and ability to binge watch favorite shows aren’t the only benefits. Super-fans of a specific actor or genre can geek out like never before thanks to unprecedented access to libraries filled with beloved stars and film categories. For example, before they were famous, many of Hollywood’s biggest stars appeared in smaller movies, such as low-budget horror films or indie teen comedies. Most people don’t even remember Bradley Cooper as one part of a romantic triangle in the offbeat comedic drama “Bending All the Rules,” or Gerard Butler in the tearjerker romance “One More Kiss.” “Before they were famous, many actors starred

Federal Lawmakers Considering Bill to Stop Surprise Medical Billing
By Desert Star Staff FRANKFORT, Ky. — Congress is considering legislation to stop surprise medical bills. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, in 2017, 7% of Kentuckians received at least one out-ofnetwork medical charge. Katy Spangler with the Coalition Against Surprise Medical Billing said the Lower Health Care Costs Act would help protect consumers. Several years ago, when she was having her first child, she discovered how just one medical event could result in a charge running into the tens of thousands of dollars. “I was able to pick my physician, make sure that my

But, I didn’t need the anesthesiologist until I was in a gown, ready to go and have my baby,” Spangler said. “There was no way for me to pick and make sure that my anesthesiologist was in-network.” Spangler said a scenario like this typically generates a surprise medical bill. The Lower Health Care Costs Act, introduced this summer by Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee and others, would establish a benchmark for medical billing based on region. Spangler said federal legislation needs to be passed so people don’t get saddled with monstrous bills simply because they had an emergency and were unable to select an in-network provider. “But where it gets a lot trickier, there are these providers that you don’t pick,” she explained. “And the problem has really been

Those providers can charge really high rates many, many many multiples of the Medicare program.” Some physicians groups opposing the legislation say the bill could have unintended consequences. Spangler said some
private equity-backed or hedge fund-owned physician staffing companies are purposefully going out of network in order to raise rates. “So one of the companies that does this, called EmCare, before they went into an area, the amount that was paid for an ER visit was
$467. After EmCare came in, they increased that price to $1,649,” Spangler said. Members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee are now investigating the role of private equity firms in driving up costs that result in surprise medical bills.
Is it Exclusive Use Common Area? Part 3
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Hi Kelly, I was interested in your recent answer that a club’s storage space would not be considered exclusive use common area. Statewide there are thousands of HOAs with swim teams, tennis teams, bridge clubs, etc using HOA facilities. Surely this is also permissible if the board gives its blessing? Regards, L.Q., Concord
Dear L.Q., Exclusive use areas are defined by Civil Code 4145 as areas serving one or more members and are appurtenant to the interests of those members. A club storage room or closet space may be allocated by the HOA board, but since it is not dedicated to a single home or group of homes, it would not be “exclusive use” under the statute. Therefore, the Civil Code 4600 vote requirement would not apply to that allocation. Thanks for your question, Kelly Hi Kelly, We were told by a board member that the patio attached to our unit is “common area with exclusive use rights” for us, but no one seems to have any documentation. The neighbor behind us disputes this and is now asking for documents showing that the patio is ours (or is for our exclusive use), but we cannot
locate anything saying so. We asked the management company for documents related to this, but they don’t have anything, and I couldn’t find anything in the CC&Rs. How can I prove that we are the only ones who can use the patio (or is it possible to show that we own it?)? Thank you, L.G., Beverly Hills
Dear L.G., Exclusive use common areas are hopefully defined by the CC&Rs and Condominium Plan, but if they don’t address the subject, Civil Code 4145 provides an answer. If the governing documents do not state otherwise, then the patio originally constructed to be used by one unit would be expected under Civil 4145(b) to be exclusive use common area for your unit. Some Condominium Plans characterize balconies, patios or garages as part of the unit

A Proper ‘Welcome Home’ for Vietnam Vets at Ft. Campbell

By Desert Star Staff WHITEFISH, Mont. – Whitefish has become a model for how rural towns can adapt to the effects of climate change. The jumpstart for the northwestern Montana town was the Resilience Dialogues in 2017, which partly led the city to produce its Climate Action Plan in 2018. Steve Thompson, the plan’s former project manager, says the dialogues helped local leaders outline the issue with help from experts around the globe. He says it also provided a valuable lesson about how to talk about this issue in rural, more conservative communities. “There’s a lot of people that are interested in being part of the solution,” he states. “They’re not interested in just having big picture discussions about climate change, but they’re willing to talk about climate change and they’re not denying climate change if the frame
is what we can do locally to be part of the solution.” A report just out from the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences highlights the Flathead Valley town’s climate action work and the role Resilience Dialogues played. Thompson says the Whitefish Climate Action Plan is a roadmap to resilience. By 2025, the town aims to reduce emissions by 26% below 2016 levels through a solar farm, energy efficient buildings, transitioning to electric vehicles and other initiatives. Whitefish also is putting measures in place to protect the town against its greatest threat – wildfires – through fire safety councils and collaboration with regional landowners. doing things that just showed dishonor, because we were participating in an occupation or war that people here in the States didn’t approve of.” The event is free, but organizers suggest arriving up to two hours before the 2 p.m. ceremony to allow time for processing through security and getting to the event location on base. More information is available at states.AARP.org/tennessee. Stacy Pennington, outreach director at AARP Tennessee, said this veterans’ welcome home event is a first for Fort Campbell. “So, at the hanger, Hanger 3, it will be really neat. At 2:00, they’ll have the Vietnam veterans behind a closed gate. They’ll open that gate, and everybody will be inside the hanger. And we will give them a proper ‘welcome home’ - like we do currently when our current men and women come home from
service now,” Pennington said. Nearly 500,000 veterans live in Tennessee. Around 37% of them served in Vietnam, according to data from the Housing Assistance Council. Beaver said seeing people make time to celebrate and welcome him and fellow veterans has affected him profoundly. “It’s just heart-wrenching to see the support, and people waving, giving highfives and saying, ‘Thank you for your service’ - something that didn’t happen 50 years ago,” Beaver said. AARP also will host an evening Memorial Mile walk and candlelit ceremony to honor fallen heroes in Clarksville, on Saturday, September 21, as part of the Valor Run marathon. MT Town Shows How to Frame Climate Change in Rural America
Whitefish, Mont., implemented its Climate Action Plan in 2018, providing a potential model for other rural towns. (-ted/Flickr) is connecting communities that face the same risks. “Although each community is special, each community is unique, helping people to understand that for every challenge you’re facing with respect to climate change, there is most likely someone out there who’s
experienced something similar and that you can learn from,” she states. Thompson says he sees amazing climate action going on in big cities and thinks rural communities should figure out their own way to be part of the climate change conversation, too.
Study Finds Racial Gap in Crucial Stroke Treatments
By Desert Star Staff ARLINGTON, Va. – Black and Hispanic people having a stroke are less likely than their white counterparts to get critical treatments, according to new research from the American Heart Association’s journal, Stroke. Are You Prepared for the Next Natural Disaster?
By Desert Star Staff The devastation of Hurricane Dorian has left an indelible mark and also served as a reminder of the importance of being prepared for the unexpected. Worldwide, 281 natural disasters impacted more than 60 million people in 2018, according to the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters. As unexpected occurrences continue around the globe, it is important to plan how to keep your family healthy and safe in the event an emergency or national disaster strikes close to home. September is National Preparedness Month, and given recent news headlines outlining the devastation left in the wake of natural disasters, now is the perfect time to make simple preparations to ensure your family has essentials on hand for an emergency. While many comprehensive resources exist to help you build an emergency kit, the first step is to start with the basics: water, food, light, communications and first aid. An emergency preparation element often taken for
granted is access to safe and potable drinking water. From earthquakes and hurricanes to floods and wildfires, natural disasters can contaminate and disrupt water supplies and systems. “During disasters, water systems are often compromised, and it may take days or even weeks for proper testing to be done and for systems to be restored,” says Alison Hill, managing director of LifeStraw, a manufacturer of water filtration systems that has been on the ground in India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Mozambique, here in the US, and most recently the Bahamas, offering support to those affected by devastating natural disasters. While most emergency preparation checklists include clean water, it can be difficult to plan for more than a few days’ supply. Emergency preparation tips suggest keeping a few gallons on hand (about a 3-day supply), however for longer-term protection and to eliminate the bulk and weight of carrying large quantities of water during an evacuation scenario, a personal filtration
device stored within your athome emergency kit or go bag provides greater flexibility and longer-term protection. Options from LifeStraw are a good choice, as they remove virtually all bacteria (99.9999 percent) and parasites (99.99 percent) that can contaminate water when systems break down or present within backup water sources. Because of their ability to filter out these contaminants like E. Coli, Salmonella, Giardia,
Cryptosporidium, and other waterborne bacteria and parasites, LifeStraw products make it possible to drink from any nearby river or body of water. The original LifeStraw, is durable, weighs only 2-ounces, is easy to store and lasts for up to 1,000 gallons of water. Its easy to keep a few in an emergency kit or even the glove compartment of your car. LifeStraw also offers other models, such as the LifeStraw Flex with Gravity Bag, LifeStraw
Mission, and LifeStraw Community, which are ideal for families and groups. To build out your emergency kit, check out these additional resources: ready.gov/ build-a-kit and fema.gov. This National Preparedness Month, take steps to prepare your family in the event of a natural disaster or other emergency. StatePoint

OxyContin maker files for bankruptcy faced with over 2,000 lawsuits By Desert Star Staff Purdue Pharma, accused of fostering the US opioid crisis with its drug OxyContin, filed for bankruptcy protection in a New York court, after a tentative settlement deal faced opposition from multiple states. The company filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in White Plains, New York on Sunday evening, as part of its efforts to finalize a settlement with state and local governments, which sued the pharmaceutical giant en mass for its role in the nation’s deadly opioid crisis. The much-anticipated filing aims to help the company to shield itself from 2,600 lawsuits, including from 26 states. “This settlement framework avoids wasting hundreds of millions of dollars and years
of protracted litigation,” Steve Miller, chairman of Purdue’s board of directors, said, adding that the company will keep on working with plaintiff representatives to thrash out the settlement agreement “as quickly as possible.” Numerous plaintiffs accused the company of making huge profits from selling the painkiller, first introduced in 1996, while downplaying its addictive qualities, thus fueling the US opioid crisis, which has seen over 200,000 people dying as a result of overdoses with prescription drugs from 1999 to 2017. The bankruptcy announcement comes several days after the Sackler family behind the controversial drugmaker reached a

The bankruptcy announcement comes several days after the Sackler family behind the controversial drugmaker reached a tentative multi-billion-dollar settlement with 23 states, which envisages it paying the sum over seven years while not admitting guilt. Overall, Purdue is set to fork out nearly $12 billion to state and local authorities under the deal, including $3 billion that would come directly from the Sacklers, who would also give up the control of the company. The proposed settlement requires the company to file for bankruptcy, which it ultimately did on Sunday.
Not everybody is, however, onboard, with some states arguing that the company must also offset the costs of treatment and incarceration. Half of the states have not yet signed on to the deal, and several states, including New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Wisconsin, have rejected it outright, vowing to push for the litigation to go forward. There have been concerns that the billionaire family, faced with mounting lawsuits, could attempt to hide their assets from the court. On Friday, New York’s attorney general uncovered over $1 billion in wire transfers routed through several Swiss banks by the family, accusing them of trying to “shield their financial misconduct.”

Bootstraps Releases “Evergreen” Single & Announces his new album
By Desert Star Staff Los Angeles based artist Bootstraps has released his new single “Evergreen” and announced the release of his third full-length album Demo Love out October 18th via HyperExtension and available for pre-order. “He sings with a beautifully hollowed out purpose, seemingly reminding, or taunting us, that there really might not be a tomorrow, but you’ve got a fat sack of yesterdays that you could spend all of your time on -contemplating, dealing with, processing until they’re worn soft.” –Paste Magazine “Evergreen” was written while Beckett was traveling to Europe, fleeing a painful breakup. He was half-awake on a flight heading over the Atlantic watching a nondescript entertainment talk show when he overheard the host say, “such and such is riding a wave of success,” then and there Beckett wrote the first lyric for “I ride a wave, only made to break,” setting the tone for the heartbreaking but stunning lead-off track, “Evergreen,” on
what would become his next album. “’Evergreen’ is about feeling transient,” Beckett told Variance Magazine. “The world I was seeing in L.A., and my own life was like a T.V. eternally switching channels, riding out waves of relationships that were here and gone too soon. False starts, ‘a wild horse on a leash’ but still believing in the existence of permanence and finding something constant; evergreen as it were. This kind of dualism, reality vs. optimism, creates an inevitable conflict I like in my music.” When working on writing the rest of the album, Jordan Beckett, who writes and records as Bootstraps, was fascinated by the dichotomy of the word Demo,” which can mean to demonstrate or to demolish. Getting ‘demo love’ is also a music expression where you can’t let go of a song’s original version ‘the demo’ and you love it so much you can’t see or hear a new take. These contrasting ideas are all thematically woven throughout the album Demo Love. “Singer-songwriter

Music was not always Beckett’s true calling. He was a college baseball star, but an injury sidelined him, and any future he had in sports. For those who haven’t seen the film, The Desert Sun is teaming up with NBC Palm Springs and Desert AIDS Project to host a special screening of the documentary at 7 p.m. on October 11 at the Palm Springs Cultural Center. “5B,” tells the true story of the group of nurses and caregivers who opened the world’s first AIDS ward at San Francisco General Hospital and changed the way patients were cared for during the 1980s AIDS epidemic. Hank Plante, will participate in a Q&A after the screening with DAP’s Dr. Shubha Kerkar. The event is free and open to the public, with suggested contributions supporting the scholarship fund of the local chapter of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (ANAC). Californians post haunting bushfire images as evacuations ordered By Desert Star Staff Hundreds of residents were ordered to evacuate their properties as a 200acre bushfire broke out in San Jacinto, California. Alarmed locals have been sharing extraordinary images of the blaze online. Mandatory evacuations were enforced by local authorities for more than 60 homes and 200 people after the bushfire erupted at about 6pm local time Saturday. By 11:30pm, the blaze had grown rapidly, torching more than 200 acres with only 10-percent containment, according to the Riverside County Fire Department. Some 235 firefighters
were deployed to the blaze, dubbed the ‘Horseshoe Fire’, along with two air tankers and one helicopter. No injuries have so far been reported. The latest wildfire comes as California continues to battle its biggest wildfire of 2019. Nearly 2,000 firefighters are tackling the Walker Fire that’s already burned more than 50,000 acres in the Plumas National Forest, northeast of Sacramento. Damage caused by California wildfires has grown five-fold over the past 40 years. NASA says the increase in wildfires is indicative of climate change and warned that they will become more common and harder to stop as we live in a warmer and drier climate.
First auto workers’ national strike in 12 years
By Desert Star Staff The United Auto Workers (UAW) announced that some 48,000 workers at General Motors Co. plants will go on strike starting on Sunday in a move that could hurt the American auto giant and even the whole US economy. The decision to go on strike was taken after labor contract talks between the manufacturing company and the trade union ended up in a deadlock. It will be the first nationwide strike in more than a decade for General Motors, as the last time its workers
took industrial action was in 2007 when they staged a twoday strike over contract talks. This time, the stakes are a little bit higher. The union opposes the closures of two auto assembly plants in Ohio and Michigan, apart from demanding higher wages following years of record profits for the car manufacturing giant. The company appears unrelenting, though, as it argues that the shutdowns are necessary because the plants are lacking products. It also bluntly states that the union
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Groups that advocate for seniors are urging Gov. Gavin Newsom to sign a bill that is designed to lower the cost of prescription drugs. Assembly Bill 824 would deter drug companies from making so-called pay for delay deals in which generic companies agree to keep their product off the market. Blanca Castro, advocacy director with AARP California, said these arrangements result in higher drug prices that can push low-income seniors to take desperate measures. “They either don’t take the drugs the way they’re prescribed, because they want them to last; or they have to choose between buying food or buying prescription
drugs,” Castro said. the practice of pay-forThe pharmaceutical delay deals entirely. companies claim these agreements actually expedite entry of generics onto the market. But Castro says that argument is unproven. The first-in-the-nation bill would give the state Attorney General more resources to pursue this type of case. Castro said it makes them easier to prosecute by putting the onus on the drug companies to prove the deals aren’t unfair to the consumer. “It shifts the burden of proof on the pharmaceutical company,” she said. “Right now, the attorney general must prove that the settlements are anti-competitive.” Consumer groups are working with supporters in Congress to try to ban
members’ wages and benefits are already too expensive in comparison to those of the workers at non-union auto plants in southern US states. GM, however, said in its statement that it “negotiated in good faith” and offered the union more than $7 billion in new investments as well as 5,400 new jobs together with some pay increases and improved benefits. The workers, who see the plant closures as a betrayal of those who stood by GM when it went through the 2009 government-led
bankruptcy, apparently found these terms unsatisfactory. “General Motors needs to understand that we stood up for GM when they needed us,” Ted Krumm, head of the union’s bargaining committee in talks with GM, said at a press conference on Sunday. “These are profitable times ... and we deserve a fair contract.” Meanwhile, the facilities’ shutdown drew broader criticism, including from the US President Donald Trump, who once vowed to create jobs under his ‘America
First’ doctrine and now sees Ohio as a critical state for his 2020 re-election. It is yet unknown for how long the strike will last, but it could quickly bring work at GM plants across the country to a standstill and even damage the US economy at a time when the American auto industry sees slowing sales and rising costs of curbing emissions, as well as some problems with launching electric vehicles. One of the solutions proposed by GM for the troubled factories involves turning the Ohio plant into an electric vehicle battery production facility. Yet, for now, its fate still remains unknown.

HOROSCOPES ARIES
The dweller is at the top of your astrology chart. Teaching you limitations. Knowing that at times everyone is limited and restricted is a freedom. Knowledge frees us. There has been an assessment and analysis of personal achievements, abilities, success and standing in the world. Creating a set of questions. What are my ambitions? What do I want to achieve in the world? Am I working hard enough? Do I have adequate discipline? How am I rewarded? Do I have Divine Discontent?
TAURUS Deep learning and study have taken place and now integration will occur. Perhaps you traveled to a mountain, over hill and dale to places far away. At first this didn’t make sense. In coming months, the purpose of the travel will be clear. You begin to know where you are headed, where the arrow of life is pointing, and once again life is an adventure, a stage upon which one courageously “plays their part.” There’s more to come.
GEMINI What are you seeking and what are you sensitive to? These questions are posed by Saturn, helping us to know and realize our deepest needs. What isn’t working these days with relationships, finances and resources? Are frustration and power issues building? And do you feel a sense of mortality?
SEPTEMBER 18 – 24, 2019 ASTROLOGICAL FORECAST BY RISA D’ANGELES
It’s wise to write down all that is needed. And then visualize that it all comes true. This isn’t superstition. It’s creativity. Especially for a Gemini.
CANCER Cancers may feel quite withdrawn, unable to compromise, be flexible or adaptable. This will pass. Is there a sense of lonesomeness, solitude as if in seclusion? Only real relationships that offer truth and friendship will weather these times. You define and then redefine the differences between casual, superficial, real and unsatisfying relationships. And make choices. Only a few golden ones remain.
LEO Everyday realities – work, habits, health, tending to the self – are most important. Assessing your values, you carefully bring them into practical use in and around the home and the environments you work in. Small animals and gardens, health and well-being, exercise, order and organization and your productive use of time are to be the focus. It’s vital that everything is simple, uncomplicated and manageable. Let nothing be neglected.
VIRGO For many months perhaps, there’s been a sense that the fire within was extinguished. There has been less and less
get up & go. You now seek a new sense of purpose, a stronger sense of self-identity and creativity. When we create something, our selfidentity is strengthened and brought to light. You seek to express yourself in useful ways and eventually a deep and essential recognition and love of self begins to dawn. It’s subtle. Watch for it.
LIBRA This is a time of inner reworking of what family means to you; past, present and future. You will recognize the critical stage in which you made a life decision which created certain psychological events in your life and that of the family. Now you are to rework this decision. Differentiate yourself from childhood difficulties; reorganize mind and heart so that the feeling of being unsupported shifts to a sense of understanding, seeing your childhood through the lens of kindness and compassion.
SCORPIO It’s important to network with those around you, gathering and sharing intelligence information which allows everyone to feel more pride, useful and effective in the world. Perhaps it’s time to gather a group of friends, create a seminar, a study group, or even a garden. It’s good to include siblings. Let any doubts fall away as to your communication skills. Often Scorpios don’t feel able to communicate.
However, when their heart is touched, their golden expertise in all things emerges.
SAGITTARIUS Saturn calls you to assess your personal values and standards and determine what constitutes ease, pleasure and well-being. You will want to put down real roots. There’s a drive and willingness to sacrifice and to persevere. You seek to know what is of real importance, especially in terms of land and real estate. Investing in land at this time is suggested. Wanting real substance, you become for the first time, the true architect and designer of your life. You thus accomplish much.
CAPRICORN Have you felt sober and serious these past months. Have you experienced insecurities, rejection, criticisms and disappointment concerning certain people’s actions and words towards you? Has this created a deep introspection? You always attempt to rise above difficulties, focusing on your own dreams and visions and guarding your emotions and expressions so as not to feel judged. Saturn says to see yourself as a jewel in the lotus. A rich inner life develops along with wisdom.
of insecurity, sometimes depression. Do not let change affect you in this way. Know that change helps us adapt, forcing us to seek a new state of comfort, security and well-being. Remove yourself immediately from any dangerous “ordeals”. Do not resist or fight; simply face a new direction. Eliminate all things no longer used or needed. Release seven times seven times seven. Then you are free.
PISCES You are both a private and a public person. You are both out in the world, yet a hermit. You have visions of community and each day through consistent effort and authentic power you create foundations for the new world order. This is at times quite a challenge. You are a scout for the future, a messenger leading humanity to a new home again. You are alone amidst society, sometimes looking out, sometimes looking in. Nothing eclipses your vision no matter how many lifetimes it takes. Risa D’Angeles is the founder and director of the Esoteric & Astrological Studies Research Institute: Risa’s Esoteric Astrology. damage from 130 oil and gas leases awarded on public lands in Utah. The complaint says the Bureau of Land Management violated the National
Environmental Policy Act by approving leases between 2014 and 2018 on 175,000 acres in southern Utah without accounting for the climate pollution it would September 18, 2019
cause. The suit seeks to invalidate all 130 leases. Landon Newell, staff attorney with the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, says the BLM is ignoring the potential damage of its actions. “In these leasing decisions that we’ve challenged, the BLM has failed to analyze reasonably foreseeable emissions that will come from its leasing decisions,” says Newell. Partners in the lawsuit, in addition to the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, include the groups Living Rivers and the Center for Biological Diversity. Newell says they are most concerned about several leases granted in areas of fragile wilderness where there also are multiple historical sites. “These leases will open up areas of enormous value to wildlife, to cultural resources and archaeological
history,” says Newell. “The leases are in areas of wilderness characteristics and we’re sacrificing all of that for development. That’s unnecessary and unneeded.” He says a major concern among the leases is an area known as Nine Mile Canyon, described as the “world’s longest art gallery.” “Nine Mile Canyon is an area that even the BLM acknowledges has worldrenowned cultural and archaeological value,” says Newell. “The BLM itself has referred to Nine Mile Canyon as an outdoor museum.” Newell says the leases also threaten endangered species, including the Colorado pike minnow and razorback sucker. He adds that the fracking process for oil and gas uses enormous amounts of water and could pollute the Colorado River and tributaries where the fish live.

Desert Hot Springs Community Celebrates Mexican Independence Day
Kitty Alvarado The community of Desert Hot Springs came together at the Miracle Springs Resort and Spa to celebrate Mexican Independence Day on Sunday. The resort sponsored the event. The inaugural event was put on by the Community Arts Foundation of Desert Hot Springs and the nonprofit dance company Conny Belly’s. The balet folkorico brought tradition and color. “It’s really a big celebration it makes me really feel proud of who I am and the culture I grew up with, the culture I’m creating and just the few generations that i’m teaching to be proud of what they are and to keep dancing,” says Samantha Rodriguez who is the balet folklorico instructor.
It shows that this is more than a performance for these children. “I feel proud of that … because my family and my uncles and my aunts come from Mexicoand we celebrate that culture and tradition,” says Fermin Emiliano Rodriguez, who did a solo performance in full Mexican folk regalia. What’s a celebration without traditional Mexican dishes? They had a long spread with mole and posole, all homemade by community members. Adam Sanchez with the Community Arts Foundation says this kicks off several events that will include crowing the first official Queen of Desert Hot Springs and her royal court and Dia De Los Muertos.
Sanchez says this celebration is a long time coming and hopes this is only the beginning, “Celebrating

Federal Court Blocks TN Law Restricting Voter Registration
By Desert Star Staff NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Just weeks from going into effect, a federal district court judge has temporarily blocked a Tennessee law that would make it more challenging for civic groups to organize voter registration drives. The law also would allow criminal charges for people who submitted inaccurate or insufficient voter registration forms. The American Civil Liberties Union

of Tennessee challenged the law, and its legal director, Thomas Castelli, says he hopes the ruling sends a message to other states. “These types of laws are suspect constitutionally, and that trying to follow in Tennessee’s footsteps with enacting laws along these same lines, will get you pretty much in the same position of – on the wrong end of an order from the court,” says Castelli. For now, the court has
said the state cannot make any efforts to enforce the law, which was originally slated to go into effect on October 1. House Bill 1079 requires that anyone who wants to help people register to vote has to pre-register those drives with the state, undergo some state-produced training, and submit voter applications within a certain time frame. And the law would have gone further, Castelli adds. “And then, there was September 18, 2019
another portion of the law that said anyone that’s got a website or is talking publicly about voter registration has to put a disclaimer on it saying that they’re not affiliated with the Secretary of State’s office,” says Castelli. Castelli says if the law goes into effect, it would affect people who are already under-represented. “To the extent that this law is making it harder to register anyone to
vote, it is going to have a disproportionate impact on those vulnerable communities, those marginalized communities, by making it harder for those community members to get registered to vote and participate in our democracy,” says Castelli. He adds in the coming months, the case will head back to the court for a final hearing.

By Desert Star Staff CHARLESTON, W. Va. – Climate change is overheating classrooms and in the process, hurting education, especially for poor and minority students, according to a new study from the University of California at Los Angeles. As Assistant Professor at UCLA’s department of Public Policy and the Luskin Center for Innovation, R. Jisung Park led the team that
compared standardized test results with weather records. For students without proper classroom air conditioning, said Park, they found every added degree means about 1% less learning. “That may not seem like much,” he acknowledged, “but with the climate change that’s coming down the pike without further action, we’re talking about 5% to 7%, to 10% less learning, on average, per year.”
The fossil-fuel industries and their allies in public office have either said climate change isn’t real or isn’t a serious problem. Mandy Moore: “When I Wasn’t Watching” By Desert Star Staff Los Angeles, CA - Singersongwriter Mandy Moore had shared a soul-stirring new single titled “When I Wasn’t Watching.” A classic piece of California pop centered on her captivating vocals, the song is set to appear on Moore’s forthcoming full-length effort - her first album in over a decade, due out via Verve Forecast early next year. Go to watch the video for “When I Wasn’t Watching,” a softly stunning visual directed by Lauren Dukoff, photographer/director known for her work with Adele, Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga. Produced by her longtime collaborator Mike Viola (Jenny Lewis, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness), “When I Wasn’t Watching” channels the intense self-reflection Moore experienced in making her return to her music. “The idea of diving back into music after so much time and personal change was really intimidating to me for a while,” says Moore. “But then I finally realized: I’m the only person who can make this move. It all has to start with me.” Thanks mainly to Moore’s gracefully crafted lyrics and warm vocal performance, “When I Wasn’t Watching” also speaks to a more universal truth. “I think everyone’s had the experience of feeling lost and not quite understanding how you’ve found yourself at a certain point in your life,” Moore says. “And I think the key is not to judge yourself for that. I’m a big believer in the idea that what you’ve journeyed through is ultimately going to factor into the person you become, and how you’ll greet whatever big challenge you face next.” Newly signed to Verve Forecast (a label whose roster also includes such esteemed artists as T Bone Burnett and J.S. Ondara), Moore began recording her upcoming album earlier this year. In a purposeful departure from the more tightly structured pop of her previous material, she’s worked closely with Viola and with her husband, Taylor Goldsmith (singer/guitarist/ songwriter for L.A.-based folkrock band Dawes), creating the album’s lyrics on her own and recording each song live with a full band setup. “No one’s playing to a click track - it’s all happening live on the floor, which gives everything magic and spontaneity that’s so different from what I’ve done on any other record,” says Moore. “And on top of that we’re recording to tape, so there’s no reworking or editing: a take is a take. At first, that was scary, but now it’s become a fun sort of pressure that really fuels me.” As a result of that more organic production approach, songs like “When I Wasn’t Watching” embody a bright vitality that wholly fulfills

Moore’s initial vision for the album. “I wanted to make a very California-sounding record - something that feels sunshiny and airy and natural, something you could listen to driving up and down the PCH with all the windows rolled down on a beautiful weekend day,” she notes. With her next single due out before the end of the year, Moore looks forward to embarking on the next chapter of her music career with a newfound sense of agency. “I very much feel like I’m at the helm of the ship now, where I’m stepping back into music completely on my own terms,” she says. “Everything that’s happened up until this point has gotten me to where I am today, and I’m so excited to just keep moving forward.”

MUSIC
BY ROBERT KINSLER
Musical Returns Worth the Wait
Four favorites are back with highly-anticipated albums including Austin trio Hot Club of Cowtown, blues singer Janiva Magness, power pop duo Those Pretty Wrongs and alternative rockers Tiger Army. Artist: Hot Club of Cowtown Title: Wild Kingdom (Gold Strike Records) You might like if you enjoy: Django Reinhardt, Les Paul and Mary Ford, Western swing Tell me more: Hot Club of Cowtown’s much-anticipated eleventh album “Wild Kingdom” is filled with the signature blend of traditional-mining Western swing, roots and hot jazz that singer-violinist Elana James, singer-guitarist Whit Smith and bassist-singer Jake Erwin long ago made their own. The material resonates with a contemporary energy even while the soundscape recalls some distant time. The lovely “Last Call” is a tender ballad showcasing James’ rich soprano and the artful keyboards of guest pianist Joe Kerr. Flashy guitar work helps propel Smith’s “Caveman”
reworks “Bad Moon Rising” (bolstered here by a good dose of slide guitar courtesy of guitarist Zachary Ross), the
fiery “Fortunate Son,” a stirring “Deja Vu (All Over Again)” and joyful “Lookin’ Out My Back Door” keep the momentum going on the second half of the wonderful release. Information: JanivaMagness.com.
Artist: Janiva Magness Title: Change in the Weather (Blue Élan Records) You might like if you enjoy: John Fogerty, CCR, Taj
Mahal, Janiva Magness Tell me more: It’s difficult to think of many artists more deserving of a tribute than John Fogerty. Both as the leader of groundbreaking Bay Area rockers Creedence Clearwater Revival and as a solo artist, Fogerty’s blend of blues and rock has always come in the service of stellar song craft. Grammy-nominated blues artist Janiva Magness’ “Change in the Weather” is sure to please fans of Fogerty’s recordings as well as her own expansive discography. Reworking a dozen classics across the Dave Darling-produced set, Magness was drawn to the power of the songs – including the melodic choruses and timeless themes of protest and social justice. Magness uses her mighty soprano to celebrate and paint the songs with her own touch. A gospel-tinged take on “Wrote a Song for Everyone,” a spirited blues-meets-rock “Lodi” (a duet with country outlaw singer Sam Morrow), and swampy blues take on “Don’t You Wish It Was True” (featuring bluesman Taj Mahal) are early wins. Later on the disc Magness artfully
includes an exceptional performance by Liberace impersonator Ken Hopper. Cost is $130 per person; $1300 for a table of 10. For tickets and reservations, go to the website, www. steinwayriverside.org or call (760) 341-4130. On March 8 is SSRC’s Annual Festival Piano Competition, Junior Division, for ages 7 to 14 years, and March 15 is the Senior Division, for ages 14 to 18 years, both held at Xavier School, 34200 Cook Street, Palm Desert, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. High Tea at The Classic Club, March 22, 3 to 5 p.m. is in co-sponsorship with Opera Arts. More information to follow. The Festival Winners Concert on May 13, 7 p.m. at the Rancho Mirage Library, features the top junior and senior-level winners of SSRC’s Annual Festival Piano Competition, an excellent opportunity to hear up-and-
coming musicians perform before a live audience; free and open to the public. During the school year, SSRC brings musical programs into schools with 12 ukulele and 12 piano labs in elementary schools; and classic concerts
with age-appropriate music performances for children K-12th grade. Fourth and fifth graders learn the basics of the orchestra in interactive, audio-visual presentations; and through Mr. McSymphony, children are introduced to
and more introspective “Easy Money.” The infectious bluesmeets-Americana cut “Tall Tall Ship” and dynamic jazzflavored “Ways of Escape” and “Before This Time of Men” are among the many standouts on the wonderful “Wild Kingdom.” The 14-track disc is focused mostly on new originals, but the band has reworked a couple of classics including their affecting interpretation of the traditional Scottish folk song “Loch Lomond” and the disc-ending cover of the Les Paul and Mary Ford’s “How High the Moon,” the latter a perfect vocal duet for James and Smith. In addition to the aforementioned Kerr, guests include drummer Damien Llanes and percussionist Oliver Rajamani whose contributions bolster the fantastic vocals and musicianship displayed by Hot Club of Cowtown across “Wild Kingdom.” Information: hotclubofcowtown.com.
Artist: Those Pretty Wrongs Title: Zed for Zulu (Burger Records) You might like if you enjoy: Big Star, Fastball, dada Tell me more: The sophomore effort from Those Pretty Wrongs certifies that the creative teaming of Jody Stephens (of Big Star fame) and Luther Russell first heard on their 2016 self-titled debut is just what the sonic doctor ordered. Memphisbased Stephens and Los Angeles’ Russell have the rare ability to craft songs that are simultaneously straightforward and melodically glorious. The shimmering and introspective gems “Ain’t Nobody But Me” and “You + Me” are both as beautiful as any song in memory, revealed via nuanced and poignant recordings that will grab the listener with a single listen. Even acoustic-
rooted material (“Time to Fly” “The Carousel”) shine with an otherworldly glow, with burgeoning arrangements marked by acoustic guitars that are subsequently joined by a growing cast of musical layers. Make no mistake; the songs here are ambitious with the string section-adorned “Tonight, Tonight, Tonight,” the psychedelic baroque pop sortie “Hurricane of Love” and haunting “A Day in the Park” among the choice offerings on “Zed for Zulu.” Information: burgerrecords.com. Artist: Tiger Army Title: Retrofuture (Lunatone / Rise Records) You might like if you enjoy: The Stray Cats, Lee Rocker, Raul Malo Tell me more: Armed with a top-tier voice that draws favorable comparisons with a young Chris Isaak and Raul Malo, Nick 13 leads his energetic troupe Tiger Army through a fiery and inspired batch of originals on “Retrofuture.” The songs on “Retrofuture” – the band’s first new album release in more than three years – range from the raging psychobilly rockers “Eyes Of The Night” and “Death Card” to the wistful “Beyond the Veil” and the decidedly melodic rockabilly nugget “Last Ride” (this writer’s favorite song on the LP). With the wide range of material and stellar performances captured on the Ted Hutt-produced album, “Retrofuture” also serves as a great introduction of those who have not yet discovered the outstanding outfit. Spy Pigeons & Killer Cigars: Weird ways CIA tried to win the Cold War By Desert Star Staff The CIA has declassified documents revealing its Cold War spy pigeons program, the latest revelation of the genuinely bizarre lengths the US went to, which included killer cigars, trained dolphins, and acoustic kitties. Pigeon spies The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has declassified details of its secret spypigeon mission during the Cold War, named ‘Tacana.’ It used the birds to secretly photograph sites inside the Soviet Union. The avian species were chosen because of their ability to navigate their way back home, and they apparently flew their missions while expensive cameras were strapped to them. From the sky … and the sea The new documents also reveal how the CIA used ravens to drop bugging devices on window sills, and trained dolphins for underwater “harbor penetration” missions. The mammals were also tested to see if they could carry sensors to detect Soviet nuclear submarines
and traces of radioactive weapons. In Key West Florida, the US tried to use dolphins in underwater attacks against enemy shipping. Castro-killing cigars, diving suits & seashells The US spy agency dreamt up several strange – and futile – plots to assassinate Cuban President Fidel Castro during the Cold War, including schemes involving explosive seashells and killer cigars. The CIA planned to take Castro out with a box of poisoned cigars in 1960. The cigars were spiked with an active botulinum toxin and delivered by an “unidentified person” in 1961, but Castro never smoked them. The agency also floated the idea of coating the inside of one of his diving wetsuits with a fungus that produced Madura foot, a chronic disease, and contaminating the suit’s breathing apparatus with tuberculosis bacilli, according to a declassified 1967 report by the Inspector General, part of the National Archives’ 2017 release of John F. Kennedy assassination records. It also considered planting
a “booby trap spectacular seashell” which would be submerged in an area where Castro would often dive. Acoustic kitty The CIA spent $14 million to put listening devices inside cats in the 1960s. The plan was for them to roam around and listen to Russian intelligence. The mission failed on day one when a cat implanted with such a device was run over outside the Soviet embassy in Washington.
Scientologist psychics Convinced that the Soviets were researching extrasensory perception (ESP) for espionage, the CIA started the ‘Star Gate’ project in 1970 that was headed up by a Scientologist. It recruited people, including many Scientologists, who claimed to have psychic powers, to uncover intelligence secrets. Needless to say, that project didn’t bear fruit either. LSD for mind-control The CIA’s Project MK-
ULTRA was a covert human research program secretly launched in the 1950s that tested the effects of drugs like LSD and MDMA for potential mind control and torture. The drugs were tested on human subjects, many of whom were unaware they were being experimented on. At least one participant’s death – US Army bioweapons researcher Frank Olson – has been linked to the program.
Spice of life: Former Trump Press Sec lights up Twitter.
By Desert Star Staff Former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer made his debut appearance on ABC’s ‘Dancing With the Stars’ to mixed reactions. Most of which centered around his appallingly garish choice of outfit, in radioactive green no less. Clearly battle-hardened to Twitter teasing and trolling from his tenure in the White House, Spicer pre-empted the impending
14
DesertSTAR
wave of derision with a heads up about the outfit.
On Monday night, the 47-year-old performed to the song ‘Spice Up Your Life’ by the Spice Girls, to really flog the dead horse that is his second name all while draped in a fluorescent green blouse and white pants. Described as ‘fun and entertaining’ but out of time throughout his debut performance alongside partner Lindsay Arnold, Spicer scored 12 out of a possible 30 points, one point ahead of LA Lakers star Lamar Odom. While many anti-Trumpers took the opportunity to give Spicer a piece of their mind, it was his mixed reactions choice of outfit that blinded/ most outraged Twitter, in likely his most controversial moment since stepping down in July 2017. “What’s the only thing more embarrassing than being the former White House Press Secretary under Trump? Whatever this shirt Sean Spicer has on. #DancingWiththeStars” Others felt the shirt was tantamount to a crime against
humanity, asking whether we should “send @seanspicer to Gitmo over that shirt?” “What’s the only thing more embarrassing than being the former White House Press Secretary under Trump? Whatever this

By Desert Star Staff Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.) introduced the Justice in Forensic Algorithms Act of 2019to ensure that defendants have access to source code and other information necessary to exercise their confrontational and due process rights when algorithms are used to analyze evidence in their case. This legislation will also establish standards and testing to enable a robust conversation about how these algorithms work and whether they are accurate and fair enough to be used in the criminal justice system. “The trade secrets privileges of software developers should never trump the due process rights of defendants in the criminal justice system,” said Rep. Mark Takano. “Our criminal justice system is an adversarial system. As part of this adversarial system, defendants are entitled to confront and challenge any evidence used against them. As technological innovations enter our criminal justice system, we need to ensure that they don’t undermine these critical rights. Forensic algorithms are black boxes, and we need to be able to look inside to understand
how the software works and to give defendants the ability to challenge them. My legislation will open the black box of forensic algorithms and establish standards that will safeguard our Constitutional right to a fair trial.” Across the country, law enforcement agencies are increasingly using a new type of software to partially automate the analysis and interpretation of evidence in criminal investigations and trials. These forensic algorithms have been used in thousands of criminal cases across the United States over the last decade to analyze everything from degraded DNA samples and faces in crime scene photos to gunshots and online file sharing. People are being convicted based on the results of these potentially flawed forensic algorithms without the ability to challenge this evidence due to the intellectual property interests of the software’s developers. Only the developers know how these algorithms work. Judges consistently side with developers and defendants are being denied the ability to challenge the evidence used against them and evaluate how these algorithms work because of the developers’ trade secret protections.
This presents a threat to due process rights and violates the confrontation rights guaranteed for defendants in the Constitution’s Bill of Rights, as well as in federal, local, and state law. The Justice in Forensic Algorithms Act protects due process rights by prohibiting the use of trade secrets privileges to prevent defendants from challenging the evidence used against them. There is still much to learn about how effective and trustworthy forensic algorithms really are. A case in upstate
New York, where two different probabilistic genotyping programs were used to analyze the same sample demonstrates this subjectivity, one program found a match to the suspect and one said there was no match. These inconsistencies point to the need for greater transparency and understanding of the subjective human decisions involved when this software is being built and used. To address this, the Justice in Forensic Algorithms Act directs the National Institute of Standards and
Technology (NIST) to establish Computational Forensic Algorithms Standards and a Computational Forensic Algorithms Testing program that federal law enforcement must comply with when using forensic algorithms. By establishing these standards and testing programs, defendants will have access to more information when evaluating the evidence used against them during a criminal proceeding.

Lighting Strike More Likely Than Forced Arbitration Win
By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE — Tens of millions of workers and consumers have signed agreements to not sue companies and instead settle through arbitration. But a new report says they’re more likely to be struck by lightning than to win a case through the so-called forced arbitration process. The American Association for Justice analyzed data from the two largest arbitration providers between 2014 and 2018 and found that of the 60 million employees subject to forced arbitration, only 282 were awarded monetary damages. Larry Shannon, government affairs director with the Washington State Association for Justice, said the state’s Supreme Court tried to bar these agreements, but the U.S. Supreme Court preempted states in 2018. “The U.S. Supreme Court drew a road map to give immunity to these corporations
by imposing these forced arbitration agreements on individual consumers and workers,” Shannon said. The AAJ estimates there are 800 million forced arbitration clauses in effect for consumers. However only 6,000 cases are brought forward each year, with consumers winning just an average of 382 of them. Supporters of forced arbitration say it’s easier and less expensive than a trial. Julia Duncan, senior director of government affairs with the AAJ, said there are two troubling characteristics of the forced arbitration process: corporations choose the arbitration provider, and the proceedings are secretive. She said “confidentiality” means folks aren’t able to speak out about what happened to them. “Even more concerning, especially in the context of the #MeToo movement, is that other workers, other
arbitration and alternative dispute-resolution measures when they are entered into in a process to resolve a dispute - not before a dispute has ever arisen,” he said. Last week, the U.S. House Judiciary Committee passed the Forced Arbitration Injustice
Repeal Act, which would end this involuntary practice. A vote on the House floor could come as soon as this week. Disclosure: Washington State Association for Justice contributes to our fund for reporting on Consumer Issues.

What might have probably been a case for further investigation, turned into a new barrage of demands to have the conservative Justice off the Supreme Court. President Donald Trump, who nominated Kavanaugh in the first place, said the judge should start “suing people for libel.” Last time, when the Democrats rallied behind another Kavanaugh’s accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, it ended up in a total fiasco as Ford’s testimony was ultimately found to be unverifiable, and Kavanaugh was confirmed to the Supreme Court. It’s unclear if the new round of outrage would lead to another hearing or investigation, but the whole ordeal has given material to at least two books.

Dave Rinebolt, executive director at Ohio Partners for Affordable Energy, said he’s not surprised. “Back in the mid-70s, when we launched low-income weatherization, we really started the trend to focusing on energy efficiency in buildings and in equipment,” Rinebolt said. “It’s great to see that the industry has grown to

Idina Menzel Debuts at La’s Geffen Playhouse In ‘Skintight”
L-R: Will-Brittain, Harry Groener, Eli-Gelb, Idina-Menzel By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association For the last decade or so playwrights and artistic directors have been leading the charge toward change in what is being produced in America’s theatrical venues. Culturally, America is evolving, as well. We are seeing more and more people of color in positions of power in almost every aspect of life in America. In addition to the graying of American life, we’re also embracing more acceptance that the new vanguard of our society, along with the entire arts community say diversity has finally arrived for “people who look like us.” To that, I say Amen; it’s been long overdue; however, there is much in this arena that still needs to be done. The torches, theatrically speaking, have been passed. It’s now time for the rubber to hit the road. Playwright Joshua Harmon’s newest and talky comedy play “Skintight,” directed by Daniel Aukin, in their attempts to humanize a highly dysfunctional, sophisticated, and wealthy family via the route of overthe-top comedy with dialogue and situations your grandfather would hardly recognize. He probably wouldn’t consider taking grandma either. There are boatload of F-bombs being hurled from the stage, as a way of informing the audience that old school theatre is now passe. Make way for the new wave on sex, love, and lust. A word to the wise. Sometimes less is better. The audience needs to remain ‘engaged throughout’ in order to keep filling those seats. The only surprise concerning “Skintight”, now onstage at LA’s Westwood/ Geffen Playhouse, is how talented playwright Harmon, author of the wonderful comedy gem “Bad Jews”, (presented www.desertstarweekly.com
L-R: Jeff-Skowron, Will Brittain, Harry Groener
at the Geffen in 2015; directed by Matt Shakman), who is now the Geffen’s artistic director, may have missed the mark by selecting “Skintight” for the Geffen’s 2019/2020 season opener. According to Shakman’s notes in the program, “Skintight” is “a laugh-outloud soul-searing look at the human condition. The piece delves deeply into generational and familial conflict and is ultimately a meditation on beauty: why we so desperately seek it and what happens when we think it’ gone”. In short, it is indeed, a story that is made for audiences of this “industry town” where when “beauty” leaves the female body at age 35, acting careers are over, unless one is lucky and/ or able to perform in the English theatre, where talent and aging are still welcomed; becoming old friends to visit, enjoy, and appreciate. The promise of high energy singer/actor Idina Menzel’s debut on the Geffen’s
stage is sure to lure her fans and the curious to see how she fares as Jodi Isaac, the 45-year-old, angst-filled, needy lawyer daughter of 70-year-old gay billionaire Elliot Isaac (Harry Groener). Elliot’s 20-year-old boy toy Trey, played by Will Brittain as the ex-porn star replete with boorish-behavior, and lack of civility and manners as the live-in interloper in her father’s multimillion-dollar townhouse is what drives Jodi nuts. Her annoying and irritating, non-stop “poor pitiful Pearl” vocal delivery and style ala a James Joycean series of stream of consciousness tirades, also tries the patience of Elliot. I had some difficulty as well in hearing Ms. Menzel’s comedy set-up punchlines, due to her dropping off her voice at the end of her dialogues’ sentences. Jodi’s 20-year-old, gay son Benjamin Cullen (Eli Gelb), is visiting his mother and grandfather while on school break from his University in Budapest, Hungary, where
he is studying Queer Theory Studies. Mr. Gelb’s portrayal is a tad too burlesque-like for my tastes, as he milks the audience for laughs with his physical comedy schtick. However, it did produce some laughs down front, right side of the audience the night I attended. Most of the older audience sat slightly stonefaced, delivering an occasional chuckle or two. Supporting actors Jeff Skowron as Jeff, a stoic former lover of Elliot’s and Kimberly Jurgen as Orsolya the maid, complete the cast. Playwright Harmon’s somewhat banal play, however, strives for redemption in Act Two. The scenes between Elliot and Jodi get more authentic in the otherwise implausible premise situation. I found how this family interacts with one another just reinforces the feeling that uber-rich people are too entitled, too motivated in making money, and too steeped in their life styles that they forget to raise their kids in a healthy, stable family environment.
Near the end of the play, in the denouement, Elliot says to Jodi in defense of his rationale of life with Trey as a couple “… I want to wake up in the morning and smell sex. I want to taste it. I want to see it. I want to touch it. I want to feel it. Sex is life.” That rings true with me. As we near our leap off this mortal coil, our mortality becomes palpable and frightening. It was sobering moment, so I quickly squelched the urge to call out… Then buy a dog instead! The technical credits are usually first-rate at the Geffen. This production is no exception. Scenic Designer Lauren Helpern delivers an eye-popping, two-story modern two-story acting space. Lighting Designer Pat Collins nicely compliments set designer Helpern; Costumes are designed by China Lee and Sound Designer Vincent Olivieri complete the creative team. “Skintight,” performs at the Geffen Playhouse in Westwood, Los Angeles, and runs through October 12, 2019.
