‘Climate Protest’ More than two dozen protests are scheduled across Washington state for Friday’s Global Climate Strike. (DisobeyArt/Adobe Stock) By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE – Young people are leading the world in strikes on Friday to demand action on climate change. Students and workers are walking out in solidarity as part of the Global Climate Strike. It’s taking place before the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York on Monday. Olivia Schroeder, a
senior at Lakeside High School in Seattle, is helping to organize the strike in the Emerald City. She says the movement is giving a voice to people who can’t yet vote. “We have futures that we’re looking forward to, but we need the planet to be there for those futures and we need to be able to accomplish what we want to accomplish within our lifetimes or, like,
By Desert Star Staff Singer/songwriter Matthew Mayfield has released a new video for “S.H.A.M.E.,” a track from his latest album Gun Shy. “Shame is something we all deal with, but we rarely talk about,” Mayfield told Forbes Magazine, who called the video “powerful.” “I wrote [this] song not just for myself, but for everyone who feels the need to hide and isolate as a result of something they struggle with. It could be sex, food, booze, drugs, ego... the list is endless. No one should have to feel like they’re the only one. That line, ‘So tell me one more
time that I’m fucked up and I’m just lucky enough to have you around’ was really hard to get through in the studio,” he said. “I choked up a few times on the mic. As for the acronym, those are simply first letters of names of some of the folks who have shamed and disowned me as a result of certain struggles. It was an extremely painful process that no one should have to go through. My goal with this song and the entire campaign around it is to help make sure people know they’re valued, cared
our kids and generations after us,” she states. “We need a planet there that’s not burning, going up in flames.” At least 800 strikes are scheduled across all 50 states, including more than two dozen in Washington. People in 150 countries also are planning to strike. Another event, the International Earth Strike, is planned for
next Friday, Sept. 27. Elle Johnson, a junior at Bellevue High School, is organizing the strike in her city. She says this issue has been put onto the shoulders of young people, and it’s leading to “eco-anxiety,” a fear that time is running out for the world to act. Johnson maintains people have the tools to stop climate change. She says
what’s really needed is a large social movement and concern for the well-being of people on this planet. “Almost every time I talk to people about climate change, I say if you’re empathetic enough to care about other people, then it’s inevitable that you’re going to join this movement,” she states.

Help Safeguard Your Family’s Finances By Desert Star Staff Every year, millions of American workers enroll in employee benefits through their workplaces during a period known as annual enrollment. It’s usually a short window of time, but employees make crucial financial decisions for their families for the coming year. In addition to medical insurance, many employers offer a range of voluntary benefits – those you select and pay for yourself, often by having the cost deducted directly from your paycheck. These voluntary benefits can help bridge the gap between what health insurance covers and what you’re financially responsible for, especially as more employees opt for high-deductible health insurance plans. In fact, according to a poll of 1,512 full-time U.S. workers conducted by employee benefits company Unum, 49% of working adults plan on enrolling in a highdeductible health plan for the coming benefit year, with Millennials (58%) and Gen Z’ers
(54%) at even higher rates. “While high-deductible health plans offer lower monthly payments, that can mean more financial responsibility for policyholders when they need to use the benefit,” said personal finance expert Laura Adams. “Combining a highdeductible health plan with a health savings account can offset out-of-pocket costs, but it’s also a good idea to consider voluntary benefits like disability, accident and hospital insurance to further financially protect your family.” If an accident, illness or injury prevents you from working, disability insurance replaces a portion of your income. While it may seem unlikely to many they would ever experience a disability, it’s more common than some realize. Based on 2019 information from the Social Security Administration, more than 1 in 4 of today’s 20-yearolds will become disabled before reaching age 67. Accident and hospital insurance can pay a lump sum directly to you to offset outof-pocket costs associated

up care such as doctor’s visits and physical therapy. • Hospital insurance can pay a benefit directly to you when you are admitted to the hospital. This could include immediate medical costs and travel expenses or to help cover other bills. Voluntary benefits, policies and details vary, so it’s essential
to review your options and discuss with your family before your benefits enrollment begins. “Investing a little additional time on the front end can help reduce your family’s financial risk down the road,” Adams said. Study: Higher Uninsured Rate for Native American Kids.
By Desert Star Staff American Indian children in Arizona and across the United States are more likely to live in poverty, to die in infancy and to lack health coverage, according to a new report. The study, from the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families, recommended that federal health officials work to lower the uninsured rate for these children in order to reduce their health disparities. Study co-author Lauren Roygardner, a senior research associate at Georgetown, said that despite the multiple avenues for coverage, too many native children are falling through the cracks.
“One of the complexities is the sort of patchworkquilt effect of coverage,” she said. “These children are covered with Medicaid, CHIP, some kids have employersponsored insurance, and then there’s the Indian Health Service as well. There’s just still gaps, so we don’t have every child covered yet.” The report found that across the United States, about 14% of native children are uninsured, more than double the overall rate of children across the country. Roygardner said the study looked closely at about a dozen states with the greatest concentration of native children. Roygardner described
the report as a statistical look at changes to the estimated 774,000 native children between 2010 and 2017. It found that group to be disproportionately poor, in poor health and twice as likely to be uninsured. Of those states studied, Arizona had the largest coverage gaps. “We looked at the top 10 states,” she said. “Arizona has over 98,000 children, and that is the greatest share of child population under 19, so that was 12.8% of the AI/ AN (American Indian and Alaska Native) population.” Roygardner said Arizona’s decision to expand Medicaid in 2013 is one bright spot for this group of kids. “We show the
percentage of the AI/AN children within your state who are covered with Medicaid,” she said, “and it does look like we are seeing an improvement, with 54% in 2010 - and by 2017, that increased by four percentage points to 58%.” The study recommended that the federal government take steps to evaluate how well existing programs are
working, make necessary improvements, and provide the funding to ensure native children live healthy and productive lives. The report is online at ccf.georgetown.edu. The video follows the release of Mayfield’s title track video “Gun Shy,” a no-frills tongue-in-cheek rock n’ roll song about love addiction and entitlement culture. “I didn’t feel the need to get too heavy on the lyric side - I just wanted to plug in, turn up, and make some proper rock ‘n roll,” he said. “’S.H.A.M.E.’ is by far the most powerful piece of art I’ve ever been a part of,” Mayfield told Forbes. “We shot the entire video to analog film to give it that grit you simply can’t get digitally. Writing the song and filming the video were extremely lonely times, regardless of how many people were around. I had to get back into that awful headspace of being shamed, rejected, beaten down and alone. On a brighter note,” Mayfield adds, “this song and video are for all of us who feel alone or isolated
in our struggles. Regardless of what makes you feel ashamed, there’s always someone else out there dealing with the same thing. The most vivid memory I have of making the video is the scene where I’m screaming ‘I want out of this sickness.’ Two of the crew members started crying. I did as well. I wanted every single frame to be as authentic as every single lyric. I hope those who see it feel less alone as a result.” From haunting acoustic ballads to gritty rock and roll songs filled with swagger and attitude, Mayfield has spent the past decade releasing music that has changed the hearts and lives of his listeners. Gun Shy is a collection of songs as varied as the emotions each of us feels. If his previous release, RECOIL, was the fruit of an intense effort by Mayfield to depict the good, the bad, and the ugly in the world he inhabited, Gun Shy is a look into all worlds – those
full of darkness and hope. Mayfield will kick off his upcoming tour on September 19th in Washington, DC, with stops in New York City, Dallas,

Hurricane Dorian lashed the Carolinas earlier this month. (Adobe Stock/NASA) By Desert Star Staff RALEIGH, N.C. – This month marks the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Florence, and experts are gathering in Raleigh to discuss how North Carolina’s coastal communities and low-lying areas can prepare for the future. Jay McLeod, senior planner for Municipal Planning & Mobility with Stewart Inc., helps local governments develop climate adaptation plans. He says rising sea levels and a warming atmosphere that holds more water are triggering more intense storms, so coastal areas
need to have a game plan. “Previous land-use development investment decisions, particularly on the coasts, were made prior to our current understanding of the challenges we’re facing,” he points out. “And so, communities across the state are re-evaluating their previous planning efforts.” The Sept. 26 event is being hosted by The Nature Conservancy in North Carolina and the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies. McLeod stresses that local governments need to start considering climate risk when it comes to making

decisions about where to focus growth, investment and development. “As storms hit and places need to rebuild and reinvest, they really need to have a plan in place that’s been reviewed and vetted by the community, and that people can get behind, in order to make sure that future investments are not continuing to focus resources
and value into places that are at risk,” he states. Andrew Huff, director of federal affairs for the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, says the insurance industry is now taking a more proactive approach to assisting communities in preparing before disasters hit, and is advocating for stronger building codes. “I think our number one concern is trying to end what we call the endless cycle of destruction, where basically as it stands right now, many homes are built after disasters to the came sub-par standards that led to their destruction in the first place,” he states. Last fall, President Donald Trump signed the Disaster Recovery Reform Act, which allows communities to use federal funding in order to boost infrastructure resilience in areas affected by a major disaster.

Mandy Moore: “When I Wasn’t Watching” By Desert Star Staff Los Angeles, CA - Singersongwriter Mandy Moore had shared a soul-stirring new single titled “When I Wasn’t Watching.” A classic piece of California pop centered on her captivating vocals, the song is set to appear on Moore’s forthcoming full-length effort - her first album in over a decade, due out via Verve Forecast early next year. Go to watch the video for “When I Wasn’t Watching,” a softly stunning visual directed by Lauren Dukoff, photographer/director known for her work with Adele, Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga. Produced by her longtime collaborator Mike Viola (Jenny Lewis, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness), “When I Wasn’t Watching” channels the intense self-reflection Moore experienced in making her return to her music. “The idea of diving back into music after so much time and personal change was really intimidating to me for a while,” says Moore. “But then I finally realized: I’m the only person who can make this move. It all has to start with me.” Thanks mainly to Moore’s gracefully crafted lyrics and warm vocal performance, “When I Wasn’t Watching” also speaks to a more universal truth. “I think everyone’s had the experience of feeling lost and not quite understanding how you’ve found yourself at a certain point in your life,” Moore says. “And I think the key is not to judge yourself for that. I’m a big believer in the idea that what you’ve journeyed through is ultimately going to factor into the person you become, and how you’ll greet whatever big challenge you face next.” Newly signed to Verve Forecast (a label whose roster also includes such esteemed artists as T Bone Burnett and J.S. Ondara), Moore began recording her upcoming album earlier this year. In a purposeful departure from the more tightly structured pop of her previous material, she’s worked closely with Viola and with her husband, Taylor Goldsmith (singer/guitarist/ songwriter for L.A.-based folkrock band Dawes), creating the album’s lyrics on her own and recording each song live with a full band setup. “No one’s playing to a click track - it’s all happening live on the floor, which gives everything magic and spontaneity that’s so different from what I’ve done on any other record,” says Moore. “And on top of that we’re recording to tape, so there’s no reworking or editing: a take is a take. At first, that was scary, but now it’s become a fun sort of pressure that really fuels me.” As a result of that more organic production approach, songs like “When I Wasn’t Watching” embody a bright vitality that wholly fulfills

Moore’s initial vision for the album. “I wanted to make a very California-sounding record - something that feels sunshiny and airy and natural, something you could listen to driving up and down the PCH with all the windows rolled down on a beautiful weekend day,” she notes. With her next single due out before the end of the year, Moore looks forward to embarking on the next chapter of her music career with a newfound sense of agency. “I very much feel like I’m at the helm of the ship now, where I’m stepping back into music completely on my own terms,” she says. “Everything that’s happened up until this point has gotten me to where I am today, and I’m so excited to just keep moving forward.”

‘Skintight’--A Funny Play About Sad People Playwright Joshua Harmon describes his latest work “Skintight,” now on view at the Geffen Playhouse, as “A funny play about sad people which feels like a very Jewish response to pain. When you’re struggling, you seek humor to find your way out of the situation you’re in.” His earlier play “Bad Jews” (2015) also dealt with a Jewish family and their relationship with one another. In “Bad Jews,” the family has come together for the funeral of their beloved father and grandfather. It is not only poignant, but it’s also hilarious as family members reminisce about the good and bad times shared. In “Skintight” Jodi Isaac (Idina Menzel of “Wicked” fame) has come to celebrate her father’s 70th birthday, but she has also begun seeking love and support from her dad at his home in New York (beautifully designed by Lauren Halperin). Her middle-aged ex-husband has just married a much younger woman, 24 to be exact. She finds this not only humiliating but totally ridiculous not realizing that dear old dad (Harry Groener
with many theater credits and over 70 TV credits) is now in a new relationship with Trey (Will Brittain) who is the same age as her son Benjamin (Eli Gelb). Elliot doesn’t want to draw attention to his age noting, “It’s not an achievement to not die.” It is clear that he does not want to celebrate this milestone birthday now that Trey is a part of his life. Feeling hurt and shut out, Jodi tells Trey to “go home” while she is there with her son. He very emphatically tells her that this is his home now and he plans to say put. He also plans to treat Elliot to motorcycle riding lessons as his personal gift. This makes her even angrier because it will take away from her limited time with dear ‘old’ dad. To make matters worse, yet funnier, Jodi’s son shows up following his attendance at his dad’s wedding. He too wants to be with grandpa for this special occasion. That evening as Jodi and Benjamin sit on the couch laughing and talking, Trey comes downstairs in his barely-there underwear and

Will youth and beauty once again triumph? She is by no means old, but her competition in both cases leave her feeling rejected by the important men in her life? Once again, playwright
Harmon can find humor and laughter in what could easily have been turned into a depressing drama. It is truly a gift that is aided by Daniel Aukin’s skillful direction. Death Penalty Opponents Argue for Clemency in Bucklew Case
Attorneys for convicted murderer Rusty Bucklew are asking for clemency, claiming his tumors would burst during execution and amount to torture. (ACLU) By Desert Star Staff JEFFERSON CITY,
Mo. – Convicted murderer Rusty Bucklew’s execution
is scheduled for Oct. 1, but next week the American Civil
Liberties Union will present a petition with 30,000 signatures to Gov. Mike Parson, asking that Bucklew’s sentence be commuted to life in prison. The ACLU also is meeting with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights next week in Washington to ask that group to weigh in. Jamil Dakwar, director of the ACLU Human Rights Program, says the execution by lethal injection would inflict excessive pain and suffering because Bucklew has a rare disease that causes bloodfilled tumors all over his body. “The tumors that he has are likely to burst during execution,” Dakwar points out. “That would really cause a gruesome situation where he could choke and suffocate.” Bucklew’s conviction states that he murdered his ex-girlfriend’s new partner, fired at that man’s six-year-old son – but missed – then raped the ex-girlfriend, and shot and wounded a police officer.
Later he escaped from jail and attacked the ex-girlfriend’s mother with a hammer. He appealed his case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled in April that Missouri may proceed with the execution. Dakwar laments the high court’s ruling, noting that the U.S. has signed international treaties that ban torture. “The majority of the court unfortunately concluded that the Eighth Amendment doesn’t guarantee a painless death,” he states. “This conclusion is in violation of international human rights law.” The ACLU also argues that there were significant problems during the post-conviction litigation, maintaining the attorney borrowed $27,000 from Bucklew’s elderly parents and failed to investigate them or present evidence of childhood abuse, lead poisoning and opioid abuse to the court.
Bold and Beautiful Alliums for Every Garden
By Melinda Myers Short or tall, big or small, ornamental alliums are a treat for flower gardeners and for butterflies, bees and other pollinators. Plant the bulbs in fall and enjoy months of colorful spring and summer blooms – this year, and for years to come. Just like their relatives, onions and chives, ornamental alliums are easy to grow and trouble free. Pest, diseases and even deer don’t bother them. Most types are reliably perennial and winter hardy in zones three to eight. Alliums prefer well-drained soil and full sun, though they will also grow in partial shade. You can choose flowers that are white, yellow, pink, purple or even blue. All are long lasting and combine nicely with other perennials. They are also excellent cut flowers. When alliums finish blooming, their foliage fades away quickly, so surrounding flowers can take center stage. Alliums bloom at different times during the growing season, starting with early spring and continuing to
midsummer. Consult Longfield Gardens’ allium bloom time chart (longfield-gardens.com) for help choosing which alliums you want to plant in various spaces around your yard and garden, or in containers. Plant Allium hollandicum ‘Purple Sensation’ for a burst of color just prior to peony bloom. These raspberryviolet globes measure 3 to 4-inches across and are held high on 3-foot stems that rise above most newly emerging perennials. The bulbs are inexpensive, so it’s affordable to create large displays. Plus, they multiply over time, so are a great choice for naturalizing. Be sure to include some show stopping Globemaster alliums. These flowers are the size of bowling balls, on sturdy, three-foot-tall stems. Bloom time is the same as most peonies, which make excellent companions. The dried seed heads are striking when left in the garden and will usually last into early autumn. Shorter but just as impressive, allium christophii has eight-inch diameter flowers atop 12- to 18-inch-tall stems.
The spiky, violet–pink blossoms have a silvery sheen that adds to the stunning appearance. Plant the bulbs in flower beds, along pathways and in rock gardens where their late spring blooms can be admired closeup. Allow the dried seed heads to remain in the garden for months of added interest. Plant the drumstick allium, Allium sphaerocephalon, amongst ornamental grasses or allow it to grow up through other perennials. The twotoned, raspberry and green flowers have long, slender stems and are a fabulous addition to early summer arrangements. Drumstick alliums will self-sow, so they’re ideal for naturalizing. Add an exotic look to the late spring garden with allium bulgaricum, also known as Nectaroscordum siculum or Sicilian honey garlic. The sprays of dangling, cream and burgundy florets have a look that’s completely different from other alliums. Plant them in flower gardens, informal naturalized areas and cutting gardens. They will return to bloom again year after year.

FAMILY FEATURES
ervice dogs offer countless benefits to help combat symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but they can also be instrumental in rebuilding and uniting families after veterans come home from serving their country. According to the National Institutes of Health, up to 30% of American military veterans experience PTSD after returning home from combat. Yet only about 40% of those individuals ever seek help. Service animals are recognized under the Americans with Disabilities Act. The designation is limited to dogs who are trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability. In some cases, these tasks are highly physical in nature, such as guiding a person who is blind or pulling a wheelchair. Other roles service dogs play may be less immediately visible, such as providing a calming presence to a person with PTSD who is experiencing an anxiety attack.
More Than a Companion
Service dogs are highly trained to assist military veterans in achieving better quality of life. Veterans who utilize service dogs report lower levels of depression and anxiety, fewer hospitalizations and a reduction in medical and psychiatric costs, among other benefits. Beyond what these canines help prevent, consider these examples of what they empower: n Ease loneliness and stress n Reduce social anxiety n Decrease reliance on prescription drugs n Help veterans return to work or attend college n Strengthen personal relationships n Provide security, protection and unconditional love
Up to the Task
Just like the members of the armed forces they help, service dogs are highly trained professionals with an important job to do, including tasks such as these: n Turn on lights and open doors before a veteran enters his or her home n Nudging, pawing or licking to interrupt flashbacks or nightmares n Utilizing body weight as a grounding mechanism to reduce anxiety or alleviate panic n Retrieve bags with medications or a list of numbers to call during a medical emergency n Provide security and reduce hypervigilance in public places n Pick up dropped items and assist with mobility and ambulation
The Benefits of Service Dogs
Supporting veterans when they return home When You See a Service Dog Service dogs are often large breeds that stand out in a crowd, and their calm demeanor can make it seem perfectly appropriate to approach and pet them. However, it’s important to remember that service dogs are at work and distractions can prevent them from providing the service their owners need. The International Association of Canine Professionals offers these etiquette tips for interacting with service dogs and their owners: n Remember that a service dog is there as support for a person with a physical or health disability, which may or may not be readily apparent. n Respect that health conditions are private matters most people prefer not to discuss with strangers. n Just as you would not stare or point at a person in a wheelchair, avoid calling unnecessary attention to a person with a service dog. n If you must interact, always focus your attention on the handler, not the dog, so the dog can stay focused on its job. Avoid whistling, clapping or otherwise distracting the dog. n Teach children not to approach service dogs. Although most are trained to avoid aggression, a perceived threat to their handlers could result in warning growls or barks that may scare a child.

In addition, for every purchase of specially marked bags of Dog Chow Complete Adult through Nov. 1, the brand will donate 5 cents, up to $100,000, to the Tony La Russa Animal Rescue Foundation Pets and Vets program, which matches veterans experiencing PTSD and other challenges with service dogs, free of charge.
