Gift Ideas for the Tech-Lovers Shopping for a tech-lover? Skip all those candles on the cake and help your birthday celebrant feel young with the latest gear. Entertain: If your birthday boy or girl is a regular traveler, he or she may need some company. When you can’t be there yourself, send the next best thing, a portable media storage and entertainment device. Look for a fuss-free device that requires no data plan or Internet connection to stream. For example, HP’s new Pocket Playlist streams movies, music, TV shows and photos to up to five mobile devices at the same time. It acts like a home DVR, but is smaller and lighter than the average smartphone. Or load up his or her e-reader with some great reads. A magazine or newspaper subscription or the complete works of a favorite author are particularly thoughtful. Motivate: Shopping for a current or wannabe fitness enthusiast? Help your gift recipient track goals and stay motivated with a gadget that records physical activity. For example, a FitBit is a wireless activity tracker that counts the user’s steps and calories, synching those stats to a computer or smartphone. Upgrade: For those who love watching movies or listening to music from their

An Edgy ‘Place Beyond Pines’ By Theda Kleinhans Reichman When it was released earlier this year, critics were fairly universal in their praise for “The Place Beyond the Pines,” now out on DVD and starring Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper. A.O. Scott of The New York Times called the film “refreshing and absorbing, with a lot to say about class, manhood and the curious operations of fate,” while Mary Pols of Time magazine described it as “a sprawling, engaging study in fathers, sons and sins.” The story begins by introducing us to Gosling, a fantastic stunt motorcyclist with

Five Reasons You Are Not Losing Fat

September 19-25, 2013

Astrological Forecast by Risa D’Angeles aries Your world becomes charming and graceful. You seek signs of beauty and places of refinement. You also seek harmony, which is quite against your usual risktaking nature. You are kind in relationships, allowing others to step forward. You compromise and seek to be fair-minded; you’ll incorporate and synthesize new diplomatic skills into your life. And you become interested in art and aesthetics. You change always. taurus You’re in service to others, dedicated to doing a job well. Often, you’re playing your role behind the scenes. However, eventually everyone realizes the significance of your work. It’s important to tend to health carefully — to shine a light on that aspect of your life. Some may begin embracing raw, vegan or vegetarian foods. Purification and rest at this time is most important. You’re preparing for a future spiritual step. gemini

esteem that you carry with pride. You find yourself being warmer and generous with others, and more dramatic. You may want to be the center of attention, in the spotlight, stepping into positions of authority. You show more affection for others. Be more forthright and study the word “integrity.” Take up a creative activity and realize how important love is to you. cancer You’re more sensitive than usual. Harsh thoughts or words create terrible pain. You forgive, eventually, but you won’t forget. Cancers remember everything. You’re protective of being hurt. That’s why you carry your shell around. It protects your inner sensitivity allowing you to climb inside with mood swings due to the moon influencing the waters in your body. You’re ruled by the moon, you’re the Mother of the World, sensing all emotional currents. Build a gate. Build a lot of gates. leo

Having trouble sticking to your diet? When your body doesn’t respond to your efforts the way you expect, it’s easy to lose the motivation to continue. “Most dieters are using outdated or inefficient methods to reach their goals,” says Dian Griesel, Ph.D., co-author of “TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust.” Dian Griesel, and co-author Tom Griesel are attempting to debunk the myths many people believe about weight loss. “Many dieters see slow results due to bad practices rooted in misguided belief,” says Tom Griesel. “But if you get the basics right, rapid fat loss is not difficult to achieve and you will see your body transform much more quickly.” If you are not satisfied with your results, the writing duo is offering five suggestions for why you may not be losing fat fast enough: • Wrong goal: If your goal is an arbitrary number based on your scale, you are already setting yourself up to fail. Scale weight doesn’t tell you anything about your actual body

composition -- how much fat you have and how much you’re losing. Your scale weight could fluctuate for several reasons, such as hydration level, water weight or muscle loss. Setting the right goal and monitoring changes in your body composition is the first key to success. • Water retention: Proper hydration is critical to fat loss and overall health. However, too little or too much water can cause problems. Water intake requirements are influenced by several factors, like weight and activity levels. A good starting point is to consume 1/2 ounce of water per pound of current body weight. Drink at least 16 ounces first thing in the morning -- pure water is best -- and more if you are thirsty. • Too much exercise: Excessive exercise creates stress and can be counterproductive when you’re restricting calories, causing loss of muscle mass. Low-intensity activities like walking -- along with minimal strength training to retain muscle mass -- is all that’s needed. • Too much of the wrong thing: Diet is the most efficient

your intellect to free yourself from anything holding you back. You feel rebellious, have great curiosity, become inventive and imagine how to solve a problem. Your mood swings create a restlessness. Routine does not interest you anymore. You ask if your present work is rewarding mentally and creatively. You need to be free.

concerned with social reform, humanity having equal rights. You understand that the phrase “All men (humanity) are created equal,” actually means, “All minds are created equally.” You stand up for the education of all of humanity — that they have knowledge, strength in numbers, supporting each other to bring about social changes. You love humanity.

virgo You will experience bravery and courage — behaviors of a warrior. Competitiveness may emerge from a sense of being a pioneer. Careful with arrogance, which can creep in with new ideas. Careful also with impatience, creating difficulties with others. You may have an idea, go into action, and then lose stamina and energy all quite quickly. Then it’s all forgotten. Blazing new trails requires constancy and control. It’s best not to go into battle. libra You may feel other people’s pain. It may feel like your own. This will lead to a level of compassion new to you and a sensitivity that will help you work more authentically and deeply with others. I discovered the other day, when I was very distressed, that people turn away from distress. I felt abandoned, and I learned to say to those I see in distress, “How can I help?” You will begin to use those words, too. scorpio

way to create a caloric restriction, maintain blood sugar levels, which are conducive to fat loss, and provide all the nutrients you need for optimal health. If you’re not seeing positive changes in body composition, the problem is almost always your diet. • Stress and lack of sleep: Chronic stress can have an adverse effect on hormonal balance, which can hinder fat loss and cause loss of essential lean body mass. Stress and lack of sleep disrupt many delicate physiological functions. Regularly practicing some method of relaxation and getting seven to nine hours of sleep every night will make a big difference in your fat loss efforts. More information about smart dieting habits and optimal health can be found at www. TurboCharged.us.com. Don’t ditch your diet before seeing the results you want. By working smarter, not harder, you can achieve your goals before losing motivation. (StatePoint)

Tips for Parents of Little Athletes

As a parent, you can help make your kids’ sports season a successful one. The experts at Sun Products, the makers of all detergent, offer these tips to help you and your little all-stars get your game faces on: Safety First: Scrapes and bruises come with the territory, so don’t sweat it when these minor injuries occur. Keep a first aid kit on hand to clean and cover nicks and cuts when they happen. It’s hot out there and your kids are playing hard, so cool them down and hydrate them with flair. Boost team pride by doling out frozen ice treats in your team’s colors. Post-Game Fun: You win some; you lose some – but it’s how you play the game that matters! Teach your kids that giving it your all is what counts most. Keep spirits high by making fun post-game plans for the entire team. Celebrate a game well done by taking the players out for a pizza party or a barbeque in the park. Tips for Finding Happiness

Are you living a happy life? Most of us face daily routines filled with the stresses of jobs and busy family schedules. And bad news seemingly is all around us, in an increasingly violent world filled with strife and scandal. Yet there are many small changes that can help you and your family live happier, productive lives and improve your community, say experts. “All over the world, people are finding that there really is a way to live happily. They trust life and believe things will turn out well and, if not, they cope. Life tends to prove us right, which is why a positive attitude is so important,” says J. R. Lankford, author of “The Covert Messiah,” which poses interesting questions regarding society, religion and science, as part of a fast-paced mystery thriller series. “Even at the worst of times, people are usually wonderful. We saw teachers in the Newtown, Connecticut shooting give their lives without thought to protect their young pupils. We saw people at the Boston Marathon run toward the danger when the bombs went off,” she adds. It is this observation about the profound and positive aspect of humanity that drives Lankford’s latest novel in her series, which is full of selfless characters willing to risk injury or

In a deeply flawed world, Lankford offers some timeless advice for people looking to find serenity and happiness in their daily routines: • Let the things of tomorrow worry about themselves. Yes, keep up with important events, but a steady diet of bad news isn’t good for you. • Teach your children that

they have the power to make the world a better one and it starts with belief in oneself. • Take time each day to focus on the good in the present moment rather than being lost in worrisome and often pointless thought. Meditating even 15 minutes a day can change your life. • If your children are involved in their own strife with fellow classmates and friends, help them identify common ground. Teach them to forgive and not retaliate. September 20, 2013

• Set a good example by choosing to notice the good and being happy yourself. Volunteer. Demonstrate that an average person can touch the lives of others. More information about “The Covert Messiah,” which can be read alone or along with Lankford’s other novels, can be found at www.jrlankford.com. NEVERSKIPBREAKFASTAGAIN As mom knows all too well, getting everyone ready in the morning can feel like a mad dash to the door. But no matter how hectic, moms know starting the day with a nutritious breakfast is important. Even though most Americans know breakfast is the most important meal of the day, about 31 million Americans skip breakfast every day, with young adults and teens having the highest rate of missing their morning meal1. That’s why Kellogg’s® is introducing Kellogg’s To Go™, an on-the-go nutritious option for mom and her breakfast skippers to help make sure each day, no matter how busy, lives up to its potential. In fact, experts worldwide agree: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. • After eight to 12 hours without eating, our brains and bodies are ready to refuel.2 • Skipping breakfast can lead to missing out on essential nutrients and significantly lower intakes of protein and fiber in both teens and adults3. Those who start their day with breakfast get nearly 17 percent of their daily calories from breakfast as well as a significant amount of their daily recommended intake of several key nutrients, such as Vitamin D, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin A4. “Breakfast is such an important meal – by starting your morning with breakfast, you kick start your metabolism for the day.” says Dr. Laura Jana, pediatrician. Kellogg’s To Go Breakfast Shake Mix allows you to create your own unique breakfast shakes to take with you on the go with the nutrients, like protien and fiber, that people want to help them have a great day. 1

Make Sure Breakfast Never Gets Skipped Again Keeping your morning routine organized is key when it comes to saving your sanity and ensuring your family’s nutritional well-being. Here are a few tips from pediatrician and Food Fights author, Dr. Laura Jana, to help make sure that even the breakfast skippers get out the door on time with a breakfast that everyone can feel good about. • Staying Sane: Keep a calendar on the fridge with everyone’s schedule for the week so that nothing is forgotten. • On-The-Go: Whether you’re running out the door to take your teenager to school or rushing to get yourself to yoga class, it’s entirely possible to get off to a healthy start when you are on the go. It can be as easy as tossing a nutritious breakfast shake in your purse or handing it to your teenager as they run out the door. • Living Healthy: The combination of regular exercise and a balanced diet that includes plenty of fiber, protein, whole grains fruits, and veggies is one of the best ways to keep your mind and body healthy, as well as help get you moving each morning.
