NBC PS News Staff The eastbound Pomona (60) Freeway between Ontario and Riverside remained closed Sunday and Sunday evening for the final time as part of a resurfacing project that will shift to the westbound side of the freeway next week, requiring additional weekend-long closures. For the eighth weekend, beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, crews closed the entire eastbound 60 between Interstate 15 in Ontario and the 60/91/215 interchange in Riverside, roughly 13 miles, and intend to maintain the closure until 5 a.m. Monday. This is slated to be the final weekend shutdown
on the eastbound 60, over a 55-hour period. The closures began on July 26. The first overnight closure of the westbound 60 is scheduled Sept. 27 and will also begin at 10 p.m., then end at 5 a.m. on Sept. 30. Officials said the westbound closures will continue over the ensuing seven weekends, ending Nov. 18. However, work will be suspended for Veterans Day weekend, as it was paused to accommodate Labor Day weekend travel on the eastbound side. Caltrans’ objective is to have all the freeway closures finished by Thanksgiving.

A few of the movie shows Palm Springs, and there is a murder mystery movie. There are reallife stories, documentaries, and even short films, so there is everything covered for all tastes in filmdom. Also, a note that no festival goes on without volunteers. Men & Women dressed in LGBTQ film festival t-shirts greeted guests as they
arrived, ushered them into the Theatres and did more to promote the Film Festival. Another festival highlight for theatergoers is the afterparties where they can mingle with friends and filmmakers and have an opportunity to make new friends. After parties were held at the Tropical, Eight 4 Nine Restaurant, and Runway. Afterparties are a place to unwind, let your hair down, discuss the films you liked or that touched your life in some way or what they learned from a specific film that will help them in their own life.

How to use the Standard Deduction & Avoid Capital Gains Tax
By Janice Gough Nearly everything you own is a capital asset for tax purposes. Whether you purchased it for personal use or as an investment, the difference between what you paid for it and what you sold it for is a capital gain (or loss). All capital gains are reportable and subject to tax. Unfortunately, capital losses can only be reported on property you purchased for investment purposes. Capital gains are classified as long-term when the asset is held for more than one year. Long-term benefits realized on most assets are taxed at a maximum rate of 15%. The exception is a long-term

gain realized on collectibles Short-term gains (assets held less than one year) are taxed as ordinary income and tax rates could be as high as 3 Most people believe that the tax rate on capital gains is 15%. However, qualified dividends and long-term capital gains actually follow a bracket structure with three separate rates that are dependent on your total taxable income. This can create some exciting opportunities for people in the know. Additionally, for higherincome people, the notorious 3.8% additional income tax on net investment income creates an 18.8% or 23.8% capital gains and qualified dividends rate. The tiered structure of the capital gains brackets creates unique opportunities to take advantage of the zero percent
rate. For instance, for a married couple in 2018, the standard deduction is $24,000 plus an additional $2,600 if both are over 65 years old or blind. That means a married couple filing jointly, both over 65, could actually have $103,800 of capital gains and pay no federal income tax at all! The challenge with the calculation is that it includes other taxable income. In other words, if a couple had $26,600 of IRA withdrawals and no other income sources, and also had $75,000 of capital gains, the standard deduction would prevent any of the IRA withdrawals from being taxable, and the capital gains would be taxed at a zero percent rate (because ordinary income plus capital gain minus the standard deduction falls below $103,800). If the same couple had $100,000 of capital
gains, the first $77,200 of capital gains would be taxfree at the zero percent rate, but the remaining $22,800 would be taxed at 15%. Why does the zero percent rate matter? There are often opportunities to capitalize on the zero percent capital gains rate, particularly for people who are recently retired and have a choice from which accounts they should be spending. Many are holding a highly appreciated stock or mutual fund that is no longer a good fit for their financial plan, but they are afraid to sell it because they don’t want to pay tax on the gain. In that situation, consider forgoing any withdrawals from the IRA to sell as much of the appreciated stock as possible without paying tax. Alternatively, if there is substantially less than $100,000 of gains to harvest,

‘Hellish hot-house’ Venus could have been habitable
By Desert Star Staff Our nearest planetary neighbor could have sustained a perfectly habitable environment for billions of years, a new study says, until
something caused it to undergo a drastic ‘resurfacing’, turning it into a “hellish hot-house.” Since NASA’s 1978 Pioneer mission found signs that shallow oceans once
flowed on Venus, scientists have wondered if it indicated the planet could once have had a stable enough climate to support liquid water – a key element in assessing the
habitability of any planet. Often dubbed ‘Earth’s sister planet’ due to the similar size and mass, Venus is believed by many to be too hot and too close to the Sun to have sustained liquid water. Carried out by Dr. Michael Way and Anthony Del Genio of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, research studied five scenarios involving different quantities of water coverage on Venus, and found that in every case the planet could maintain suitable temperatures to sustain liquid water for a three-billion-year period. The pair say Venus could potentially have maintained this temperate climate right up to the present day if it hadn’t been for a series of events 700 million years ago that sparked
a catastrophic ‘outgassing’ of carbon dioxide stored within rocks on the planet. “Our hypothesis is that Venus may have had a stable climate for billions of years. It is possible that the near-global resurfacing event is responsible for its transformation from an Earthlike climate to the hellish hothouse we see today,”said Way. It’s still not clear what caused the extreme outgassing which resulted in the planet’s transformation, though volcanic activity is one possibility. Temperatures on the surface of Venus can be hot enough to melt lead, according to NASA, while the atmosphere is incredibly dense.

Climate change protesters disrupt rush hour traffic in DC
By Desert Star Staff Climate change activists disrupted rush hour traffic in downtown Washington DC with protests, installations and some twerking on Monday. Their actions coincided with UN Climate Change Summit. The protest, dubbed ‘Shut Down DC,’ targeted several locations across the US capital. Climate activists tried to block traffic by erecting barricades of sorts and placing vehicles at busy intersections. The police tried their best to remove the obstacles, towing away vehicles and carrying protesters onto sidewalks. So far, no arrests have been reported and the protesters did not try to resist law enforcement. The most ‘successful’ disruption of the city’s traffic occurred just north of the White House at the intersection of 16th Street and K Street. Activists rolled
a small yellow and pink sailboat onto the intersection and staged a dancing party right on the street. Some of the protesters handcuffed themselves to the vessel, making it difficult for the police to remove the obstacle from the intersection. Law enforcement was seen using angle grinders and other power tools to cut the activists loose from the boat – but not before providing them with fire-resistant blankets and ear protection. Some of the protesters handcuffed themselves to the vessel, making it difficult for the police to remove the obstacle from the intersection. Law enforcement was seen using angle grinders and other power tools to cut the activists loose from the boat – but not before providing them with fire-resistant blankets and ear protection. Some – presumably male – protesters were even
spotted twerking at the middle of an intersection. The bizarre performance was accompanied by generous confetti throwing, which is actually not a very environmentally friendly activity. The protest became
the backdrop to the UN Climate Summit, which brings together leaders of some 60 countries to talk about the issue, while major companies are expected to make new pledges to cut greenhouse gas emissions. Mere non-binding
resolutions are not enough for the protesters, however, who demand some “real” decisions from the gathering and seek to press the US government into changing its stance on the climate change issue through disruption of the US capital.
Health Groups, Mayors Pan Trump’s Move To Lower Emissions Standards
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Clean-air advocates are speaking out after the Trump administration yesterday formally revoked a waiver that allows California to have higher vehicle emissions standards than those set by the federal government. The Environmental Protection Agency claims new cars with fewer pollution controls will be cheaper – so more people can afford to replace older models. Paul Billings, national senior vice president for public policy for the American Lung Association, disagrees. “So we’re going to have

vehicles that create more greenhouse-gas pollution, don’t go as far on a tank of gas, and that will mean that more money comes out of a family’s pockets for their monthly transportation costs,” says Billings. The EPA’s revocation of the Clean Air Act waiver also affects the 13 other states plus D.C. that adopted California’s standards. California recently struck a deal with four automakers, who will keep producing cars to the higher emissions standards. Albany Mayor Rochelle Nason says California is particularly prone to smog and notes that carbon emissions contribute to climate change
– which scientists have linked to worsening droughts, heat waves and fires. “It’s extremely troubling,” says Nason. “We have had waivers in place for years to protect human health. Air pollution affects everyone, especially the most vulnerable among us.” The change is certain to be challenged in the courts. The administration is expected to release its new, lower emissions standards later this fall. Democrats Call on Republicans to Curb Gun Violence
By Desert Star Staff MADISON, Wis. – As Gov. Tony Evers and Democratic lawmakers tout support for a “red flag” bill in Wisconsin, Republicans are taking issue with the governor’s comments on mandatory gun buybacks. Thursday’s news conference was supposed to be about strengthening background checks and Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPO) or a proposed “red flag” law to allow a judge to seize people’s firearms for up to a year if they pose a threat to themselves or others. But when Evers said he’d also consider mandatory buyback of assault weapons, top Republican leaders lashed out, claiming it’s all a ploy to take guns from legal owners. Democratic Rep. Melissa Sargent of Madison sponsors the “red flag” bill. “I haven’t seen any legislation when it comes to gun buybacks this session,” says
Sargent. “And quite frankly I’m investing my time and energy into these two bills and commit to work hard with the attorney general, the governor and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to move them forward and save lives in Wisconsin.” Seventeen states and the District of Columbia have passed similar red-flag bills. Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke has been pushing for mandatory gun buybacks in recent weeks but GOP leaders in Wisconsin say a state proposal would not succeed as long as they remain in control. Sargent says the string of mass shootings around the country should be enough to get lawmakers to act. “I know that gun violence is a true reality for too many people in the state of Wisconsin and that the status quo is not working for our friends and neighbors,” says Sargent. “And it’s vitally important that
Under current Wisconsin law, a person is prohibited from possessing a firearm, and must surrender all firearms, if he or she is subject to a domestic-abuse injunction, a child-abuse injunction or, in certain cases, a harassment or an individual’s-at-risk injunction. (Pixabay) we as a Legislature stand up and hear the cries of the people in our communities.” Sargent also sponsors the bill calling for an expansion
of background checks for gun sales in the state. It would require the Wisconsin Department of Justice to conduct checks on purchases
made at gun shows, online auctions and other sales that aren’t covered by federal law. Republicans have said they had no interest in the bill.
Rise In Black Lung May Be Due to Mining Thinner Coal
Victims of black lung have described the incurable lung disease as feeling like you are drowning on dry land. (Jack Corn/U.S. Archives/Wikipedia) By Desert Star Staff CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The return of black lung to Appalachia may be due to the coal industry here mining thinner seams of high-priced
met coal, used to make steel. Morgantown occupational physician Dr. Carl Werntz said black lung is often caused by silica dust from sandstone the mine machines cut along
with coal. He said the miners he sees are increasingly working thinner coal seams with more sandstone. “A lot of them will describe working in lower
coal. And now instead of the dust being 1% silica, you’re getting maybe 50% silica,” Werntz said. The mine safety community has been concerned with a marked rise in black lung among younger miners in Appalachia. Werntz said the thinner coal seams theory is not the only explanation put forward, but it is gaining acceptance. After more than a century of mining, the region has exhausted the thicker, easier to access coal seams. That, and the collapse of demand for thermal steam coal used to generate electricity, the industry has increasingly shifted to mining thinner seams of higher-value met coal - often the only viable option. Werntz said the areas where black lung is on the rise are the same areas where these factors are present. “If you take West Virginia,
Virginia, and eastern Kentucky out of the equation, the amount of black lung we’re seeing hasn’t changed,” he said. “It’s actually continued to go down in the rest of the country.” There are other theories about the increase in the number of black-lung cases, but Werntz argued those theories are based on factors also present in areas where the number of cases is not rising. He stressed the best and only effective way to stop this horrible and debilitating disease is to prevent it from happening. “We were taught that this is a disease that you’ll see a little bit of in people who’ve been mining for 30 or 40 or 50 years,” he said. “And what’s really tragic right now is that we’re seeing this is young coal miners. And it’s a preventable disease.” More information is available at CDC.gov.
Final Eastbound 60 Closure Concludes in Jurupa Valley Continued from Page 1
The agency said the rehabilitation work, which entails replacing slabs of pavement, is moving twice as fast because of the partial closures, which has been dubbed the “60 Swarm,” referring to multiple projects occurring over the next two years along the 60 freeway. Altogether, the swarm covers a 20-mile stretch, from Chino to downtown Riverside. www.desertstarweekly.com
In addition to the shutdowns, intermittent and extended lane closures are occurring in the construction zone, between Euclid Avenue in Ontario and the 60/91/215, officials said. Portions of the Interstate 15/Route 60 interchange in Ontario are being periodically closed for the swarm, as well. Single lane closures began eight weeks ago in several locations and will wrap up in November
2021, when the $134 million pavement replacement project is slated to conclude, according to Caltrans. The other part of the 60 Swarm is comprised of bridge replacements, costing $23 million. According to Caltrans, the Benson Avenue, Monte Vista Avenue and Pipeline Avenue overcrossings in Chino are all due to be razed and replaced with new spans. Alternating east- and westbound lane September 25, 2019
closures for the bridge work started seven weeks ago. Most of the overnight closures are occurring between Ramona Avenue and Reservoir Street in Chino. Officials said the current bridges were constructed with dimensions that make them prone to being bumped by
oversized truck loads. Over the years, the repeated minor hits have had a cumulative impact, requiring the twolane bridges to be replaced. More information is available at http:// www.60Swarm.com, or via the 60 Swarm hotline: 833-607-9276.

Cruz insists Iran wants to nuke American cities, puzzles Twitter
By Desert Star Staff Ted Cruz insists Tehran’s dream is to nuke American cities and that the Iran nuclear deal is to blame for the attack on Saudi oil facilities. The argument was mocked for making no sense, but the hawkish senator doubled down. The Texas legislator, one of the most vocal cheerleaders of Donald Trump’s “maximum pressure” campaign against Tehran, took to the pages of the New York Post on Friday to warn the public of the imminent danger. More international sanctions against Iran may soon be dropped under the 2015 nuclear deal, which means Tehran is drawing closer to obtaining nuclear weapons which “could incinerate American cities with a single flash of light.” America must act now and invoke the so-called snapback mechanism outlined the nuclear deal to keep the sanctions in place and also cut Iran out from the global
financial system, Cruz said. If you are puzzled by this line of argument, you are not alone. After all, how could Trump use the nuclear deal, from which he withdrew in the first place, to cudgel Iran more? And what could Tehran hope to gain by killing millions of Americans even if it had the capability to do so? The suggestion that Iran’s ambition is to do in New York what the Americans did in Hiroshima and Nagasaki is hardly new for Cruz, but it comes as tensions in the Persian Gulf have intensified after Washington and Riyadh claimed Tehran was responsible for the attack on the Saudi oil facilities. The oped was criticized by a number of people, among which the senator singled out Nicholas Miller, an assistant professor at Dartmouth College, who incidentally conducts research in nuclear proliferation. “I’m curious, what does he think Ayatollah Khamenei means when he refers to USA
as ‘The Great Satan’ & chants ‘Death to America’? Here’s an idea: Don’t give him billions of $$ to find out,” Cruz tweeted. Cruz’s outburst drew quite a few snide remarks on Twitter. Some said he must have missed class when they were teaching about how nuclear deterrence works. Or he simply cannot imagine that the Iranian
leadership learned a lesson from the examples of Saddam Hussein and Muammar Gaddafi. The two leaders dropped their nuclear ambitions only to find themselves later on the receiving end of the US military machine. The UN nuclear watchdog said Tehran kept to its obligations under the nuclear
deal for over a year after Washington withdrew. And to answer the senator’s question, Iran’s supreme leader means: “death to the US’ policies, death to arrogance,” according to Khamenei himself. But these details seem to have little effect on the Texas senator.
motorcade made up of eight large black SUVs. The mile-long ride was additionally secured by state police on bicycles. And that’s all on an island where cars have been banned since 1898.The motorcade was delivered to the island by a

During his speech, Pence tried to impress the public with his knowledge of the island’s traditions and recalled visiting Mackinac as a child and later when he had his own family, noting that during one visit his wife told him not to come back without local fudge, another thing the Mackinac is famous for. But by the time he started speaking the main tradition had already been broken. Many took to social media to blast Pence for a huge transgression, comparing it to walking into a Japanese tatami room with muddy boots. Democrats also threw in their two cents. However, others said it was a sign that the times had changed with officials facing
increased security threats. Mackinac Island has been a vehicle-free naturelovers’ oasis since the 19th century when the Mackinac village council banned horseless carriages from its streets. Most of the rest of the island is state parkland, and Mackinac Island State Park Commission extended the ban to the territory of the park after summer cottager Earl C. Anthony ignored the ban and brought a car to the island, frightened and hurt several horses, and damaged some carriages. The ban has been preserved up until this day, with exceptions made only for emergency and construction vehicles and no indulgences for VIPs who have previously used horses to get around the island. Gerald Ford, the only sitting president to visit, traveled by horsedrawn carriage in 1975.

Chronic Conditions Cause More Traumatic Falls Among Baby Boomers By Desert Star Staff ST. PAUL, Minn. — More than 3 million older adults are treated for falls in emergency rooms each year, with 1 in 5 of them suffering serious injuries such as broken bones or head trauma. cause of injuries and death among older Americans. According to Cameron, that’s increasingly attributed to chronic conditions experienced by many Baby Boomers. “Like diabetes, arthritis, chronic pain - and they all can lead to an increased chance of having a fall,” Cameron said. Cameron said 1 in 4 Americans aged 65 and older falls every year, resulting in expensive health-care costs
and sometimes a reduced quality of life. She noted that Minnesota ranks number two after Wisconsin for the number of falls reported among older adults, with South Dakota and Iowa also among the top ten states. Cameron contends falls are not a normal part of aging, and it’s important for older adults, their healthcare professionals and elder caregivers know how to September 25, 2019
protect against them. She said changes in balance and mobility, sometimes due to loss of muscle mass, medications and changes in vision or hearing are common culprits. But exercise programs can be beneficial. “Tai Chi is a perfect example of that type of program,” she said. “It’s been around for thousands of years, and there’s been research looking at its effectiveness
in reducing falls. And if it’s practiced over a period of 24 weeks, it can reduce falls by as much as 55%.” Cameron encouraged aging adults to seek out Tai Chi or other exercise programs typically available at local senior centers or YMCAs. Falls are responsible for nearly 3 million injuries treated in emergency departments and more than 27,000 deaths annually. www.desertstarweekly.com
Chess Linked to Better Student Outcomes By Desert Star Staff The game of chess dates back to the sixth century, and Kansas City schools are capitalizing on that staying power to get children involved in playing a game known to enhance students’ selfconfidence, thinking skills and academic achievement. More than 40 schools in the Kansas City region offer free, after-school chess clubs to help children learn and think strategically. Brent Schondelmeyer is deputy director of community engagement for the Local Investment Commission (LINC), which sponsors the program. He says chess also can improve math skills and teach children how to analyze and think ahead. “We’re not trying to create Grand Masters,” he states. “We’re trying to create kids that can sort-of think strategically – understand two or three moves ahead. Although many consider chess an intellectual sport, longtime LINC chess instructor Lee Bohannon says he’s never encountered a student who couldn’t learn how to play the game. He says it can also work magic for children who’ve experience bullying – and those who’ve been the bullies. “Once they start playing chess, they start looking at how to make decisions more rationally, how to make choices better than they’ve done before,” he points out. “And many times, when you’re talking to young chess players, they express that a lot.” Schondelmeyer says chess was the original electronic or e-sport – and,

Wisconsin Parents Urge DeVos to “Care” About Public Education
By Desert Star Staff MADISON, Wis. — During Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’ recent visit to a Milwaukee voucher school, public-school supporters showed up to protest her plans to expand similar programs nationally. DeVos kicked off her back-to-school tour hoping to drum up support for socalled Education Freedom Scholarships, which would provide $5 billion in federal tax credits for donors who contribute to state-
designated scholarship funds. But, Heather Dubois Bourenane, executive director at the Wisconsin Public Education Network, said many parents want to see more fairness in her plans. “They just want her to care about the 860,000 kids who are in Wisconsin public schools,” Dubois Bourenane said. DeVos visited St. Marcus Lutheran School, one of Milwaukee’s largest and most successful private voucher schools. She said,
“the United States ranks 24th in reading, 25th in science and 40th in math in the world,” as she called for changes. Friday DeVos stopped at a charter school in Detroit, and so far, hasn’t announced any plans to visit any traditional public schools. Dubois Bourenane argued DeVos has no real interest in providing families with real school choice, especially after the Trump administration
plans to decrease the Education Department’s funding by $7.1 billion, with little evidence of their proposals showing success. “The test scores show we’re making no progress in closing the gaps between rich and poor kids, black and white kids, or students in Milwaukee and elsewhere,” she said. Wisconsin’s voucher programs now serves about 40,000 students across the
state. It was initially created to give poor, black children the opportunity to escape poorly performing schools. But critics say the programs are now being used to privatize education while promoting a religious ideology. The Trump administration’s budget proposal suggests eliminating 29 public programs, including after-school and summer programs for students in high-poverty areas.

You think about loving your work and those you work with and communication is good with everyone (though you must battle against critical thoughts) and you seek to help others more, which inspires them and then work is even better and more fulfilling and loyalty toward you emerges and then new goals are considered and workflow increases and so does success. It’s like a river flowing harmoniously for everyone. It begins with you, the leader.
TAURUS You may not be romantic outwardly because of so much work to be done to insure humanity and the future’s sustainability. But this doesn’t mean you feel less love. It’s just that you’re focused and determined and disciplined and must follow your own instincts and intuition and not let relationship concerns get in the way. You have been tending to others non-stop for weeks. You must rest now. The world goes on. And new challenges are ahead.

areas, and think about where efforts should be made, what should they focus on, as they look to make changes.” According to the report, heavy tobacco use continues to be a major health risk factor for younger Kentuckians. “Some of the challenges that we’re seeing are the high prevalence of tobacco use among adolescents - tobacco use meaning smoking as well as chewing tobacco,” she said. ‘Booksmart’ --A Smart and Sassy Look at Today’s Teens
When I went to high school years ago things were a whole lot different than they are in “Booksmart,” a film about two modern millennial BFFs. My best friend Jennie and I, like Amy (Kaitlyn Dever, TV’s “Last Man Standing”) and Molly (Beanie Feldstein, the sister of funny guy Jonah Hill) were really close. We did everything together from art classes to acting in the senior class play. However, this is where any mutual similarity ends. While we went to an all girl’s parochial school run by nuns, Amy and Molly are seniors who go to a swinging co-ed high school in the San Fernando Valley. As “Booksmart” begins, Amy and Molly are contemplating their future. Their senior year has come to an end, and they are about to enter a whole new academic world. Molly is off to Yale, while Amy is headed to Africa to do volunteer work before starting college. As they talk, Molly realizes they made top grades but never had fun like their peers did. When Molly finds out that there is going to be a big farewell party at school president Nick’s house,
www.desertstarweekly.com
she is determined to crash it and end their high school days with a bang. It takes some coaxing, but she finally gets her introverted pal Amy to come with her that night. First, they have to figure out where Nick lives. The next step is getting there. This involves their odd-ball principal (Jason Sudeikis) who moonlights as a rideshare driver and a hip, very supportive teacher (Jessica Williams) who makes sure they look beautiful. While in the school bathroom earlier in this eventful day, Molly overhears her peers talking about their future plans. It turns out that they too will be going to prestigious “colleges--but unlike Molly and Amy, they had lots of fun during their high school days. This is the impetus for her desire to go to the big party, so their high school days will end with a big blowout. Amy, who came out as a lesbian to her lovely and understanding parents (Lisa Kudrow and Will Forte) not long ago, has a crush on a spacey fellow classmate named Ryan (Victoria Ruesga) who will be at this big graduation bash. This is one of the reasons
Amy reluctantly agrees to go to the party with her BFF. “Booksmart” was directed by actress turned director Olivia Wilde (TV’s “House’) and written by Emily Halpern, Sarah Haskins, Susanna Fogel, and Katie Silberman. The film takes a modernday look at the ups and downs of being a high school teenager in today’s world. Even if we were teenagers awhile back, we could still

relate to trying to fit in and be accepted in high school. Or anywhere for that matter. Overall the teenage experiences in the film are both funny and touching. It can be hard to reach out to someone. You can get hurt, but it’s worth the effort. One criticism, however, is the overuse of the F- word. Less would have been more. “Booksmart,” from Annapurna Pictures, is rated
R for strong sexual content and language throughout, drug use and drinking--all involving teens. Running time: 1 hour, 45 minutes. “Booksmart,’ now available on DVD, features interviews with director Olivia Wilde, actors Beanie Feldstein, Kaitlyn Dever and other cast members as well as set and costume designers. Learning how the film was crafted and created adds to the fun.

SKINTIGHT on Stage at the Geffen Playhouse
My mother use to say, “Remember Bevie beauty is only skin deep. It’s what’s on the inside that counts.” Well mom, that theory is totally blown up in Joshua Harmon’s Skintight as the play grapples with the effects of aging and the worshipping of beauty inherent in youth. Skillfully directed by Daniel Aukin, who kept the action moving at a brisk pace, here’s the plot line: Aging woman Jodi Isaac (Idina Menzel) is dumped by her husband who gets engaged to a 24-year-old big breasted woman named Madison. Her friends, as well as her gay son (Eli Gelb) all attend the celebration party. Jodi is very depressed and flies to New York to be with her father Elliot, (Harry Groener) who is about to turn 70. He is a highly successful designer living in a luxurious four-story townhouse in the city with 24-year-old Trey, (Will Brittain) a vacuous, but sexy former porn star with fabulous buns who has swung both ways. Also present is the dutiful houseboy
As the play unfolds, it is revealed that old dad is rather narcissistic and has been anything but a devoted parent, which has laid heavily on Jodi. A successful attorney, she is hoping, however, that under her depressing circumstances, he will be capable of offering her some tea and sympathy. She also wants him to get into celebrating his birthday but he warns that he doesn’t want anything special, especially, “No cowboy jumping out of a cake,” adding, “It’s not an achievement not to die.” Dad is really turned on by hunky Trey commenting, “I’d like to have sheets made from your skin.” Jodi takes an immediate dislike to the seemingly dumb Oklahoma born and bred lover and keeps asking him to leave so only the family is present. Plopping into a chair, he informs her “I live here. This is my home.” Jodi continues to harp on her disapproval of her dad’s relationship with Trey. He keeps defending his choice but despite professing how happy he is dad, who is also

After taking Elliot out for a birthday seaweed wrap, in a surprise move, Trey offers a rather long birthday toast extolling all of Elliot’s wonderful qualities and how happy he is to be with him and at the end asks Elliot to marry him. Long, long pause following which the newly engaged Trey turns to a horrified Jodi and says, “You’re going to be my stepdaughter now.” So, back to my comment as to whether this family dramedy could be considered soap opera. While walking a narrow tightrope, there are several elements that distinguishes this play from a daytime “soap” beginning with a well-written script. Add to that, sharp direction of a talented, professional cast, and a limited run vs. a serial, which is open ended. Also, there is a deeper level to this play in that it explores some elements of society’s fascination or even obsession with youth, relegating women, especially, to becoming invisible after a certain age. But, there’s a great line

Heather Mae’s Debut LP Glimmer By Desert Star Staff Today, Washington, DCbased award-winning singer/ songwriter Heather Mae releases her debut full-length album GLIMMER, a collection of nine songs supporting one central theme: “Feel To Heal.” Within the grooves of the new album, Mae wrestles with the complexities of existing as a human with mental illness, each song penned while experiencing the “lows” of Bipolar Disorder to create her rawest, most vulnerable work to date. Unfazed by what a typical pop artist today is “supposed” to look like and how the regular pop artist is “supposed” to sound, Mae, whose evocative vocals and rhythmic piano style call to mind artists like Stevie Nicks and Sara Bareilles, creates intoxicating music that tackles complex topics surrounding mental health, LGBTQ+ issues, self-love, racial injustice, social inequality, and women’s rights. Inspired by her own personal experiences and identities - a queer, plus-size woman living with Bipolar Disorder - and those of her multifaceted fans with whom she has forged connections throughout her many years of touring across the United States, GLIMMER brims with powerful lyrics and unforgettable music about life’s moments--from the quietly chaotic to the explosive. “I hear the voice of my great-granddaughter saying fight for me, fight for me now,” Mae sings on album opener “Warrior,” a #MeTooinspired feminist anthem which features a choir of 100+ female vocalists. Of “You Are My Favorite,” written for her wife and inspired by her own wedding vows. Mae told Glide Magazine, “It is a love song… but it is also a protest song: until the day every nation passes anti-discrimination laws for LGBTQ+ people, big and loud LGBTQ+ love will always be an act of protest. One day, I hope my songs about my wife will be seen as boring love songs, just like every other love song out there, but until that day, I will sing of our love proudly and loudly.” Mae paid tribute to PRIDE by releasing a video for “Be Not Afraid,” which featured J. Harrison Ghee, star of Broadway musical Kinky Boots, along with Mae and a cast of LGBTQ+ actors and dancers. In observance of World Suicide Prevention Day which occurred on September 10th, Mae released empowerment anthem “I’m Still Here,” saying, “I know the face of death. She has stood in my room, over my bathtub, sat on the edge of my bed. I have felt the pills in my hands. I have felt the knife on my skin. I have almost given in...but I am still here.” Mae is here to shake up the status quo with her message: “Feel To Heal.” In

2016, after eight months of silence to recover from vocal nodules, Mae made a vow: she would dedicate her career to solely write music that made the world a better place. Her independently-released debut EP I AM ENOUGH, which reached #58 on iTunes Pop Album charts, was her announcement to the world. Mae’s music champions those whose voices have been marginalized. “I had a goal when I was writing these songs -- for (fans) and for me,” she told Billboard. “The messages I get are not ‘Yeah, I partied to your songs this weekend and I went on a road trip and blasted your songs.’ What I get is, ‘I didn’t commit suicide ‘cause I listened to your song’ or ‘I came out because of you’ or ‘I left my abusive partner because of
your song.’ Those are the messages I get. So f*** this music business; as long as
I’m doing the work of keeping people alive, I’m successful.” GLIMMER is available

Such is the case on NRBQ’s two-disc release “Turn On, Tune In.” The title features six tracks recorded live at Sirius/XM’s “The Loft,” as well as a 15-song set captured at WFMU-FM’s Monty Hall in Jersey City, N.J. NRBQ impresses equally with a deeply-affecting reworking of the Beach Boys’ “Don’t Worry Baby.” Information: www. omnivorerecordings.com.

Travel CA Wine Country’s Back Roads: SoCal Spotlight
By Desert Star Staff SAN FRANCISCO, - Wine Institute concludes its California Wine Country Back Roads series this month with highlights from Southern California wine country, extending south from Ventura County to San Diego County. California is home to some of the world’s most famous wine destinations. Yet, even the high-profile regions have less traveled wine roads, featuring gorgeous scenery, acclaimed wines and fewer visitors. Before the warm weather slips away, explore the off-the-beaten-path wineries among the surf and sand in Southern California at DiscoverCaliforniaWines.com. Just a short distance from Los Angeles, Temecula Valley has been growing winegrapes since the late 18th century.
With more than 40 wineries and 2,500 acres under vine, Temecula is Southern California’s largest wine-producing region. The warm climate is suited for growing Syrah and Tempranillo, as well as Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. The De Portola Wine Trail is set on the valley’s rural, equestrian side, while Calle Contento Wine Trail offers sweeping views. Celebrated as the birthplace of California winemaking, San Diego is where Franciscan monks planted the state’s first grapevines in 1769 and made wines at Mission San Diego de Alcala, California’s first mission. San Diego County boasts more than 100 wineries. With a Mediterranean climate that allows vintners to grow approximately 60 different grape varieties, the
region is best known for Merlot and Chardonnay. San Diegois also famous for its long beaches, making it a popular tourist destination. One hour north of Los Angeles, find the Ventura County Wine Trail. The route features a dozen wineries, located minutes away from each other in a relaxed, coastal setting. The scenic Malibu Coast Wine Trail has over 50 vineyards and seven tasting rooms, offering wines influenced by the Pacific Ocean and Santa Monica Mountains. East of Los Angeles, Cucamonga Valley was one of the state’s dominant winegrowing regions during the early 20th century, and now hosts a handful of historic wineries, mainly producing Old-Vine Zinfandel
and Port-style wines. Sip and sample at the annual Ventura Winter Wine Walk or explore Ventura’s Pier Beachfront Promenade, a wooden pier built in 1872. In Malibu, stroll along a wide stretch of sand at Zuma Beach or enjoy The Food Event on Oct. 13, showcasing 40 of L.A.’s restaurants and 20 wineries.
To find out more, visit www.foxsuper6.com
Take an e-bike tour of Temecula Valley wine country, glide over vineyards in a hot air balloon or sample wines from over 30 producers at Temecula’s CRUSH event Sept. 28. Explore San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter with its shops, galleries and dining, paired with a San Diego Food and Drinks Tours walking excursion. Moving inland, visit the goldmining town of Julian or enjoy local wine at the Ramona Art & Wine Festival Nov. 2.
Southern California wine country has more than 150 wineries where visitors can see harvest, enjoy scenic views and taste limited-production wines. Above: Palumbo Family Vineyard in Temecula Valley. Robert Holmes photo, courtesy Wine Institute.

SafeAirbags.com and Morgan Freeman Urge You to Check Your Airbags
By Desert Star Staff SafeAirbags.com, an organization notifying consumers of the need to repair the millions of recalled Takata airbags that remain on the road in the U.S., today launched a national broadcast consumer awareness campaign, featuring Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman. The broadcast campaign is part of the ongoing efforts to reach over 41 million vehicle owners in America who have been affected by the Takata airbag recall and spread the word that a part inside the recalled airbags can explode, causing serious injury, or even death. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has confirmed that 16 people in the U.S. have been killed, and hundreds of others are alleged to have been injured, by this defect.
The severity of the recall caught the attention of Mr. Freeman. The television, radio and digital spots will highlight Freeman asking people everywhere for their help in raising awareness of the recall and encouraging viewers and listeners to visit SafeAirbags.com to see if their vehicle is on the recall list. “It’s the goal of SafeAirbags.com to help ensure the safety of all consumers affected by this recall,” said Patrick Juneau of SafeAirbags. com. “Unfortunately, many consumers have disregarded warnings or postponed getting their airbags repaired, and some consumers still may not be aware that their vehicle is included in this serious recall.” Juneau was appointed by a Federal court in Florida to administer an outreach program aimed at repairing
these defective airbags. “We hope enlisting the support of a celebrity such as Mr. Freeman will cause more consumers to better understand the severity and urgency of this recall, check their vehicles, and contact their local dealerships immediately to schedule a free recall repair if they are affected.” The television spots will run nationally in the morning and during prime time on major networks and cable channels beginning August 5, and through October of this year. A radio and digital ad campaign will complement the television ads. To see if your vehicle is affected by this urgent safety recall, visit www. SafeAirbags.com or www. NHTSA.gov/Recalls. Nevada Makes Progress Against Child Poverty
By Desert Star Staff CARSON CITY, Nev. — The state of Nevada has 57,000 children living in concentrated poverty - but the good news is, that’s 10,000 fewer than about a decade ago. The Annie E. Casey Foundation released its latest Data Snapshot Tuesday. Nevada saw a 2% decrease in children living in neighborhoods where at least 30% of the population lives below the federal poverty line in the period between 2013 and 2017, compared with the four years prior. Aaliyah Goodie, data analyst with the Children’s Advocacy Alliance in Nevada, said children of color still disproportionately live in poverty. “Sixteen percent of AfricanAmerican and Latino/Hispanic children are living in that concentrated poverty, and 13% of American Indian children,” Goodie said; “compared to 3% of white children in our state.” The report also found nationwide, African-American and American Indian children
are 7 times more likely than white kids to live in a poor neighborhood. Latino children are 5 times more likely. Goodie said she credits improvements to the economic recovery after the recession, in addition to state-level efforts to increase affordable housing and address stubborn pockets of poverty. Scot Spencer, associate state director of advocacy with the Casey Foundation, said one way to continue those efforts is to incentivize colleges and medical centers to hire local people. “Hospitals and universities are big economic engines. They actually spend lots of money in hiring people, in procuring services,” Spencer said. “They can also be a partner in making sure that the opportunities are based locally and help to support and lift up the people that live in their communities.” The report called on the federal government to help low-income families by increasing the child

shows 13% of the state’s children live in stubbornly high pockets of poverty. Kelly Hardy, senior managing director of health and research at Children Now, said basic living expenses in the Golden State are intolerably high for low-income families. “Housing is a big piece of the puzzle for poor families in California, as is the immense expense of child care,” Hardy said. The study looked at the data from 2008-2012, and compared it to the period from 2013-2017 and found that disproportionate numbers of black, Hispanic and Native American children are stuck in neighborhoods where more than 30% of people live under the federal poverty line. Scot Spencer, associate state director of advocacy with the Annie E. Casey Foundation, said the federal government should
make major investments in subsidized child care, because right now, there are far too few slots available. “No children should be living in neighborhoods of concentrated poverty,” Spencer said. “The fact that we still have 8.5 million children after multiple years of economic expansion and growth should not be a satisfactory solution for anyone in the United States.” California has made major efforts to help low-income families over the past several years, expanding Medi-Cal to cover undocumented children, boosting earned income tax credits to Californians by $1,000 a year and raising the amount of CalWorks payments. 89 Percent of Americans Get their Cup of Joe from Home
By Desert Star Staff Reddi-wip polled more
than 1,000 Americans ahead of International Coffee
Day on September 29, to understand more about their coffee consumption habits. The research found that in an average week, 89 percent of Americans get their coffee from home, citing convenience, cost and customizability as primary decision-making factors. When it comes to how Americans take their coffee, 79 percent drink their coffee with add-ins, like coffee creamer, sugar, etc. over drinking it black. While customization is already popular among coffee drinkers, Reddi-wip is now giving coffee lovers a new way to customize their coffee with its new Barista line of cream-based products – Nitro Creamer and Sweet Foam – to give consumers a coffeehouse experience any time of day, without the coffee shop lines or price. Supporting statistics from the survey include: The Average Joe: 89 percent of Americans get their coffee from home during an average week and when thinking about why they prepare coffee at home: Convenient Caffeination: 72 percent state it’s because it’s more convenient Money Management: 70 percent state it’s because they’re saving money Part of the Routine: 67 percent state it’s because it’s part of their routine
Creative Customization: 64 percent state it’s because they can make it exactly how they like it Sensational Smells: 60 percent state it’s because they like the smell of coffee in their home Coffeehouse Creations: 68 percent wish they could create their favorite coffeeshop drinks at home Experimentation in the Kitchen: When thinking about the coffee they make at home, 48 percent would rate themselves an “F” (five or below out of 10) on how experimental they are in the kitchen and only 28 percent would rate themselves as an “A” (9-10) or “B” (8) Morning Glory: 87 percent of those surveyed look forward to making coffee in the morning Keep on Keeping on: More than half (55 percent) of Americans wish they made their coffee at home more often and Millennials wish they made coffee at home more often than other generations (68 percent vs. 46 percent) Add-ins Galore: 79 percent of Americans prefer their coffee with add-ins over drinking it black and Millennials are more likely to drink their coffee with add-ins than other generations (83 percent vs. 75 percent) Therapeutic Touch: 73 percent of respondents find
making coffee therapeutic The versatile, easy-touse Reddi-wip Barista series began shipping to retailers in May and will be hitting shelves this month at Walmart and Publix stores nationwide, along with online availability through Amazon Fresh. The suggested retail price is $3.99 for a thirteen-ounce can. Reddi-wip Nitro Creamer can be used in place of a traditional coffee creamer. It delivers sweetness and cream and infuses coffee with a rich, velvety texture that is usually associated with coffeehouse drinks. It can be used in both cold and hot coffee beverages as well as non-coffee beverages like root beer or orange soda floats. Reddi-wip Sweet Foam can be used alone or with Nitro Creamer or other traditional coffee creamers. Sweet Foam adds a slightly sweet, finishing touch but the foam settles on top of the beverage as opposed to dispersing throughout. When used in conjunction with another creamer, Sweet Foam creates an even sweeter coffee experience, making it perfect for lattes, caramel macchiatos and more. Unlike other traditional creamers, the Reddi-wip Barista Series is dairybased, not oil-based.
Safer Fishing Gear to Replace West Coast Drift Gillnets
By Desert Star Staff LONG BEACH, Calif. - Dolphins, whales, sharks and sea lions on the West Coast may be less likely to die in fishing nets now that authorities have approved a new type of fishing gear. The Pacific Fishery Management Council voted Tuesday to approve deep-set buoy gear to replace the huge drift gillnets made of mesh that are used by commercial fishing operations to catch swordfish. Ashley BlacowDraeger, Pacific policy and communications manager for the group Oceana, said half of the species caught in drift nets are unintentional bycatch wasted and thrown overboard. “With this new, innovative and cleaner gear,” she said, “fishermen can successfully catch swordfish without causing deadly harm to marine mammals and a lot of other sea creatures.” Trials done in the past few years show that 98% of fish caught with deep-set buoy gear are sent to market. The state of California has a program to compensate fishing crews that turn in their gillnets and permits, which helps them pay for the new, more sustainable type of gear. www.desertstarweekly.com
Blacow-Draeger said marine-conservation groups have been fighting for this change for eight years. “Now,” she said, “we need the National Fishery Service to add it to the list of approved fishing gear types,
and then issue deep-set buoy gear permits through their regulatory process as soon as possible.” Drift gillnets already are banned in several areas along the West Coast. So, fishermen using the new gear also will
soon have access to more fishing grounds, particularly off the coasts of Northern California and Oregon. The decision is online at pcouncil.org, details of the California Drift Gillnet Transition Program are at
usa.oceana.org, and more information on the Pacific Fishery Management Council is at pcouncil.org.
