This is because, while the bevy of iPhones received minor updates, Apple’s wearable was completely redesigned. When the Apple Watch was first released it felt like a complete dud. It was slow, lacked focus and, for me, spent more time on the charger than on my wrist. The turnaround

since that initial release has been tremendous as Apple’s spent the last few years removing superfluous features and focusing on redesigning the Watch as a fitness aid, rather than a notification tool. Apple Watch Series 4 – Design and display Last year, Apple took its boring-looking iPhone and modernised it by reducing the bezel and stretching out the screen. It’s done the same thing to the Apple Watch this year. The Apple Watch Series 4 sports a larger display than before, but the watch itself is barely any bigger. See the picture below of a Series 4 vs Series 3 for yourself. Apple has switched the sizes around a bit though: 38mm is now 40mm and 42mm is 44mm. Thankfully all your old straps will work fine,

Some are designed to look slick (the liquid metal one is ridiculously cool) while others aim is to be as information dense as possible. One particular face lets you add eight complications along with the time. Under the hood, Apple has made a few more significant changes. For starters, it uses a new S4 dual-core 64-bit CPU that the company claims is twice as fast as its predecessor. There’s also a new W3 chip with support for Bluetooth 5.0. Alongside these features, the Apple Watch 4 has everything its predecessor had. You’ll get integrated GPS on all versions, optional LTE connectivity (restricted to EE and Vodafone in the UK) and the same quoted 18-hour battery life as the Series 3. I’ll update this review with my real-world battery life experience once I’ve had the Apple Watch 4 on my wrist for longer than a couple of days. Apple Watch Series 4 – Fitness features and specs The Apple Watch has slowly morphed into a fantastic fitness tracker but with the Series 4 it feels more like it’s an all-encompassing health device. There are features here that could genuinely

help someone in distress. Fall-detection, for example, can detect if you trip and fall thanks to the improved accelerometer. If there’s no movement detected 45 seconds after a fall it’ll start a loud 15 seconds countdown and then alert emergency services, along with a couple of pre-selected ‘SOS’ contacts. This feature is automatically enabled for those over 65 but can be easily switched on for any user. Apple has also added an electrocardiogram sensor to the watch, that lets you quickly take an ECG without the need

for a medical appointment or additional accessories. This is a first for an overthe-counter product and Apple is rightfully hyping it up. When the ECG app becomes available in the States later in the year (it’s only received approval from the FDA so far) you’ll be able to hold your finger against the crown for 30 seconds and get a PDF detailing the results. This can then be sent to your doctor for further inspection. The app can also give you information on the rhythm of your heart. The improved heart-rate sensor – an Apple Watch

staple since the first version – will also tell you when your heart rate drops too low; another welcome addition. First impressions Apple Watch Series 4 might end up being the best Apple product in a very long time. Not only does it address my design concerns about the previous models, but the health features it has added are a genuine step forward for the industry. Apple Watch was already the best smartwatch going, with Apple Watch 4 it might just have made that gap even wider Source: Trustedreviews.com

as will any new straps you buy. My 44mm review unit doesn’t feel bigger on the wrist than the 42mm Apple Watch Series 3, and that’s a good thing. Apple said the 40mm has a larger display than the old 42mm version in a body more akin to the 38mm. The Digital Crown has been rebuilt too, adding in a haptic response when you roll it around. It’s a subtle sensation, but a reassuring one that makes it feel a lot more tactile. Apple has also ditched that crown’s garish red finish and replaced it with a nicer red ring. Below the Digital Crown is a secondary button that’s mainly used for initiating Apple Pay. This now sits flush to the body, rather than sticking out. It is still a proper, clicky button though unlike the rumours had suggested. All these design updates make for a watch that feels a lot more complete than before but it’s really the quality of the screen that makes the biggest difference. Thinning down that black border is significant, and it helps Apple cram more information onto the faces. There’s a bunch of new watch faces to use too.

Trump Healthcare Plan to Cut Costs on Health Insurance

By Janice Gough Last week we talked about the Rising Cost of HealthCare., which I hope provided some food for thought. This week, I want to address ways you can cut the costs of healthcare. I, personally, did not support the idea of a Single Payor system or the ACA plan. I believe that Americans want to have Freedom of Choice. Open Competition has always provided quality care in America. When the Government manages services, quality is lowered, while increasing costs. I was an advisor on Contracting

Boards for health insurers. Thus, I understand how important it is to have good provider bases for your clients, as well as Sound actuaries. In California, indifference with what you were told, before Obamacare, anyone who was willing to pay for insurance, could get insurance no matter what Pre-Existing conditions that they had. Several plans, such as the Major Risk Medical Insurance Plan or Access for Mothers and Infants, along with Medi-Cal provided benefits for all. At that time a Pregnant woman who qualified for low income could obtain coverage for her and her unborn child for approximately $30 per month. Others could get covered under Major Risk Medical Insurance Plan (Mr.MIP). And the Major Risk plan for a 45-year old, with a $500 Deductible, would only cost about $450 a month. These plans did not have a huge out of pocket costs either. Before ACA, another way that we could provide coverage for a client who had a pre-existing condition was to insure them on a Small Group plan, which is the direction that we are headed today Obamacare made it easier to qualify for Medi-Cal, which perhaps should have been the only change to Healthcare, in hindsight. The Trump plan will be similar to what we did before the ACA, by offering Group Rates. Americans need a break from High Healthcare Costs. The Trump plan seems to be identical to health

care before Obamacare, by providing Americans with what they want, which is Lower Costs and Easy access! Many people would prefer to pay fewer premiums, as long as their plan covers vital services. To afford monthly premiums, especially for older people, who do not qualify for subsidies under ACA, they are facing having to insure with high deductible plans, which covers nothing until you reach your deductible. ($6,500 Deductible plans!), The Trump administration’s new health insurance option offers lower premiums for small businesses and for those who would become an association member. These are called “association health plans.” These plans would provide you with lower premiums, however, may not cover all the Bells and Whistles of ACA. You would have access to Group rates and greater choices in plan options. You will have more than four possibilities than ACA. The Four on ACA are: (Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum). The new Trump plans to incorporate the same protections for enrollees with pre-existing conditions that ACA and Group plans have always offered. One concern of implementing the Trump plan is that it could cause ACA plans to increase even higher. If healthier people chose The Trump plans to save money, it could leave more unhealthy insureds in ACA plans. If healthy people

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Kelly: Our board and management do a great job of overall maintenance and landscaping of the complex. Rental units have become a consistent problem to the quality of life in our community. At a recent HOA meeting our board and property manager refused to reveal how many units are rentals. Thank You, E.G., Santa Clarita

Dear attorney Richardson: Our HOA wants to limit renters to a certain percentage of units, a goal we agree with. However, I question whether the language in the CC&R’s is legal and good policy. Specifically, the CC&R’s say that any unit that is not owner occupied is considered to be leased. Would appreciate your comments on this sort of language. Thanks as always, for your interesting and always educational articles. M.H., Riverside

flock to the new programs, as expected, premiums will rise for those who need comprehensive coverage. Some of the additions benefits of joining an association plan are the use of using Section 125 of the Tax Code, in which health insurance is paid with Pre-Taxed dollars. By purchasing a Trump model plan. Some small-business groups said the administration is providing needed flexibility in the face of rising premiums. As a broker, we look for ways we can help our clients because we understand that much about insurance is Risk and Reward. You can lower your costs by “self -insuring” some of the services included in ACA. By not covering all of the “No Costs” coverages under Essential Benefits (preventative testing), your premiums will be much lower. Personally, if I am not going to use all those coverages, I would prefer not to pay for them. The Reward of lower cos ist has

more Spendable Income! Another way to cut healthcare costs, would be by purchasing a temporary healthcare plan, which has now been approved for a one-year coverage period and is significantly less than ACA plans, however these plans will not cover Preexisting conditions, or service like Mental and Nervous and involvement in individual sports, like bungy jumping, auto racing, skydiving are excluded from coverage. Of course, if you did this, you would always be able to reenroll in an ACA plan during open enrollment each year.

50% of the attached units in the project. FannieMae has recently eliminated the owner occupancy requirement and in 2016 FHA began allowing 35% for HOAs meeting certain financial criteria. In response to HOAs adopting rental bans or rental maximums, California enacted the protection for rentals which is now found at Civil Code 4740. This statute makes leasing prohibitions adopted in 2012 or later apply only to owners taking ownership after the date the prohibition began. As rental caps are a partial prohibition on rentals, Civil Code 4740 applies, making a cap only apply prospectively (unless it was adopted before 2012). I think that other forms of restrictions discouraging but not preventing rentals would not trigger Civil 4740’s “grandfathering.” Your HOA’s legal counsel should have various suggestions of methods to discourage but not ban rentals. Provisions regarding rentals are best contained in the CC&R’s and a member vote is required to place them in that governing document. Civil 4740(d) requires

landlords to provide the HOA their tenant’s identity and contact information. This section, if scrupulously followed by all landlords, should help HOAs know how many rentals are in the community. If an HOA were to adopt a covenant such as at M.H.’s association, it may prove very difficult to enforce. There may well be non-owner occupied units which are not known by the HOA to be so, such as owners who allow relatives to live in the unit but are not rentpaying tenants. Associations should generally avoid adopting rules or restrictions which they are unable to enforce. Thanks for your questions, Kelly

Limiting Rentals in Our Association

Dear Mr. Richardson: I have read in the past that condominium complexes are not allowed to have more than a certain percentage of rentals vs owners occupying units. Some of we owners are becoming concerned with the fact that some owners instead of selling their properties have elected to rent them. We feel we may end up living in a less desirable neighborhood. Are there any laws stating the enforcement of so many rentals per total units? J.G., Foothill Ranch.

Dear E.G., J.G. and M.H.: Condominium associations have increasingly worked to limit rentals in recent years. That topic became more important in 2009 when FannieMae and FHA adopted condominium lending guidelines requiring the entire condominium project to meet certain requirements before approving loans on any unit in the project. Detached condominiums and planned developments are exempt from the project lending requirements. One of the initial lending requirements was that owners must occupy at least September 26, 2018

Arizonans Prep for Elections on National Voter Registration Day

Arizonans have just two weeks left to register to vote in the Nov. 6 election. (Richard Masoner/Flickr) By Desert Star Staff PHOENIX – Tuesday is National Voter Registration Day, and voting rights advocates are hoping to see

strong civic engagement across Arizona. Arizona broke its voting record for a primary this August, with about 33 percent

turnout, or 1.2 million voters. But even with a record showing, that means a majority of Arizonans still didn’t cast ballots.

Diane Brown, executive director of the Arizona Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) Education Fund, says, as the November election approaches, there are at least 1 million eligible voters statewide who haven’t registered. “To put that in perspective, if you combine Mohave, Yavapai, Pinal and Cochise counties, you get approximately 1 million Arizonans,” she points out. Brown says democracy works best when more people participate. Arizonans have until Oct. 9 to register, but Brown says National Voter Registration Day is a great opportunity to remind friends and neighbors to prepare for the upcoming election. On Nov. 6, Arizonans will elect a governor, a U.S.

senator, nine House members, and people to fill many more state and local positions. Voters will also decide on ballot measures on issues that include education and renewable energy. Brown expects to see a big push for voter registration in many communities Tuesday. “Many election offices, nonprofit organizations, businesses, college campuses and others will be out, with clipboards and tables and other means, to help people to register to vote,” she states. For those who aren’t able to participate in a National Voter Registration Day event, Brown says it’s also easy to register online to vote or update a registration, and find information about the upcoming elections.

CA Project Repairs Damage from Decades-Old Fire; Plans for Future

By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES — It’s been 16 years since the Copper Fire of 2002 ravaged parts of the Angles National Forest north of Santa Clarita, but damage remains. But a number of groups are working together to repair it. Fires affected the stream infrastructure and specific breeds of fish and frogs, but using innovative channel designs and restoring passage barrier sites should help the wildlife. It’s a joint project between Resource Institute, SWCA Environmental Consultants, and funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and U.S. Forest Service. Nathan Sill is a forest biologist for the Forest Service. “We’re oftentimes tasked with trying to just deal with the emergency when it’s happening, and then the aftermath doesn’t get nearly as much attention,” Sill

said. “We forget to have the conversation about well, what is the land doing and what are the natural resources that use that land doing?” The historic Saint Francis Dam site will also benefit from the project. The dam was built to supply water to Los Angeles. Thirty volunteers also will work on the ground to repair fire damage and collaborate with technical experts on a long-term plan to prevent the extent of damage in the event of another fire. Chelsey Murphy is senior natural resources project manager with the environmental consulting firm working on the project. She said the value having multiple experts involved has been priceless. “It’s been really interesting to get all these different experts into a room - and Resource Institute, who has an excellent national perspective on how to design sustainable, successful

By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE — Washington state is asking for public comments on seven alternatives for conserving marbled murrelets - seabirds that nest in the Northwest, including on state-owned lands. Conservation groups are urging greater protections for the endangered birds. Proposed management plans set aside varying amounts of mature forests, which are critical for murrelet nesting. Shawn Cantrell, vice president for field conservation with Defenders of Wildlife,

said the loss of nesting habitat is the biggest issue the birds face, especially on state lands. But, he said, the state’s proposals don’t address the problem well enough. “Even the most robust strategy that they have still doesn’t really stop the loss of all of the habitat,” Cantrell said. “Some of them are less bad than others.” The murrelet population has shrunk by more than 40 percent in the past 15 years to about 7,500 birds in the state. Cantrell said Defenders of Wildlife, the Washington

Jim Bond is the Southern California Forest Programs Manager for the federal government’s National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. He said some of the problems addressed by the Copper Fire project are a combination

of geology, past landmanagement practices and post-fire effects. “It’s really dry, it’s really erosive,” Bond said. “And so there’s a lot of sediment impacts that occur in streams, especially after fires, and in certain cases,

enhances the problems where these aquatic organism passage barriers exist.” Bond added that much of the work involves repairing damage done by past fires to create more resilient landscapes going forward.

Environmental Council and other groups want the state not only to preserve old-growth forests, but to encourage these habitats to grow over the next few decades. Many in the logging community say their interests also have to be considered along with protections for these birds. Cantrell said he is convinced the needs of rural Washington can be balanced with preserving this endangered species. “We’re confident that there can be solutions that provide for those rural

communities while also helping recover the murrelet,” he said. “It’s not an either/or.” The Department of Natural Resources will hold four meetings in Western Washington in October on its

long-term conservation strategy for the marbled murrelet. The public comment period for the revised draft Environmental Impact Statement on this plan is open through November 6.

3 Tips for a Healthy Baby By Desert Star Staff When you’re a new parent, once you’ve successfully navigated the first car ride home from the hospital and the euphoria of this new little life begins to fade, you’re left with one resounding question: now what? Over the years, you’ll have many responsibilities as a parent, but your most important focus in those early days, weeks and months is your child’s health and development, including his or her brain, gut and senses.

functions. As your baby develops, pay attention to what captures his or her attention and encourage exploration of toys, textures and other items of interest.

Brain: Numerous studies offer evidence that a child’s learning abilities are developed during early childhood, meaning before even heading off to school. That’s why it’s important to begin nurturing your baby’s cognitive development from the start. That doesn’t mean you need to reach for the flash cards right away, though. Instead, focus on simply talking, singing and playing together. These activities can help develop vocabulary and other important cognitive

Gut: When it comes to a baby’s gut health, the first six months are critical. It’s during this time period when babies have yet to be introduced to solid food that the immune system and metabolism are developing and being programmed for the future. Research published in “Cell” shows good gut bacteria during infancy, specifically Bifidobacterium, plays a critical role in establishing strong immune systems and metabolism. “It’s important for infants to have an abundance of beneficial bacteria, such as Bifidobacterium, in their gut early in life,” said Dr. Tracy Shafizadeh, PhD, gut health expert for Evivo. “Unfortunately, as an unintended consequence of modern medical practices such as antibiotics and C-sections, it is estimated that nine out of 10 babies have

exceptionally low levels of Bifidobacterium. This allows an overgrowth of bad gut bacteria, which is linked to short- and long-term health conditions such as colic, eczema, allergies, asthma, diabetes and obesity.” There is, however, a way for parents to identify if their baby has high or low levels of Bifidobacterium by asking three simple questions. If the answer is “yes” to any of these questions, there’s a good chance your baby’s Bifidobacterium levels are low. • Were you or your baby given antibiotics during pregnancy, childbirth or in the first six months after childbirth? • Were you or your baby born via C-section? • Does your baby have diaper rash or have 5-plus loose, watery poops per day? If you’re concerned about your baby’s gut health, talk with your pediatrician about an option like Evivo, the first and only baby probiotic clinically proven to restore the levels of B. infantis, a specific strain of Bifidobacterium, in a baby’s gut and reduce bad

By Desert Star Staff FRANKFORT, Ky. — For some of Kentucky’s young adults, the already challenging transition to adulthood is complicated by becoming a parent. And a report released today explores the unique opportunities to help young adult parents during this period of growth. According to the findings, 57,000 Kentucky kids have a parent between the ages of 18 and 24, and 80 percent of those children live in lowincome households. Dr. Terry

Brooks, executive director of Kentucky Youth Advocates, explained educational and workforce barriers can prevent these parents from reaching their full potential. “The silver lining is that we as a state and local communities have so many ways to address that issue and to make sure that we’re building up families so that those young parents, and those little boys and girls can have a brighter future,” Brooks said. He said access to education, job training, high-

quality child care and parenting skills programs can improve outcomes for these families. The report, released by Kentucky Youth Advocates and the Annie E. Casey Foundation, showed there are more than 3 million children nationwide living with young parents. Family Scholar House in Louisville was featured in the report for its work to help single parents and their children with housing, support services and academic coaching. President and CEO Cathe Dykstra said the myriad challenge these

The report makes other recommendations, including requiring charters to report annually their numbers of dropouts, withdrawals and expulsions. It also calls on forprofit companies associated with charter schools to report their expenditures and profits for each school they operate.

MT Programs Face Cuts If Violence Against Women Act Expires

By Desert Star Staff HELENA, Mont. – Federal legislation that funds resources for victims of domestic and sexual violence is set to expire at the end of September. State attorneys general, including Montana’s Tim Fox, and groups across the country are urging Congress to renew the Violence Against Women Act. Agencies and organizations in Montana have received more than $70 million through the law since 2005. It’s directed more than $6 billion nationwide since the bill was enacted in September 1994. “I really can’t overstate the importance of the 1994 Violence Against Women Act,” stresses Robin Turner, public policy and legal director of the Montana Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence. “It was the first comprehensive federal legislation that was

designed to end violence against women, to end gender-based violence.” Turner says the legislation also has created vital protections for Native American women. When the act was reauthorized in 2013, it granted tribal communities the ability to prosecute nonNative people who commit violence against indigenous women on tribal lands. Last week, the Senate included a two-month extension of the law in its spending bill. The House is expected to vote on the bill this week. Turner says these programs play critical roles across Montana, especially in rural parts of the state where no other services typically are available for those facing domestic violence. “Our programs would be very, very challenged to

Experts Take a Deeper Dive into KY Opioid Epidemic

By Desert Star Staff LEXINGTON, Ky. — As health, business and community leaders in Kentucky continue their work to combat the opioid epidemic, they’ll take an even deeper dive into the problem at an upcoming event. In recent years, the state has limited painkiller prescriptions and joined a lawsuit against drug companies. Despite these efforts, drug overdose deaths in Kentucky have jumped about 40 percent in the past five years. Ben Chandler, CEO of Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky, said with

We saw record numbers of overdoses in the last year or two, and we’re looking for solutions.” Infectious-disease physician at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, Dr. Ardis Hoven, said beyond addiction and overdose deaths, the epidemic has created challenges related to the spread of HIV, Hepatitis

C, and bacterial infections. “One IV drug user who might be infected with Hepatitis C is likely to infect up to another 20 people,” Hoven said. “We know that about one out of about 23 women who inject drugs, and about one out of 36 men who inject drugs, will acquire HIV disease. “ Hoven said it’s a serious public health problem, because the person using IV drugs isn’t the only one developing life-changing diseases. “That individual who may acquire HIV disease from injecting drugs has the potential for passing it on to someone September 26, 2018

Too Many People Put Their Online Identity at Risk By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A new survey shows many Californians leave themselves open to identity theft by failing to take basic precautions. Researchers from AARP California found that almost half of adults re-use the same password across multiple sites, when instead they could use a free program that generates random passwords. Brett Johnson, a reformed cyber-criminal turned security consultant, also suggested everyone put a security freeze on their account with the “big three” credit agencies so that no one can pull their credit report without permission. “Put a freeze on your account, that way a criminal cannot access your credit report, set up new accounts, order replacement cards, commit all types of crime, using your name,” Johnson said. Johnson noted that kids are now the number-one victim group of identity theft, so it’s a good idea to freeze their credit reports as well.

Experts also warn of so-called phishing attacks, which are unsolicited requests to update your account information. These emails may look like they’re coming from a site you use, but are really attempts to get your personal information. Johnson said some people avoid setting up online

access to their accounts, assuming it is safer. But, he said, establishing online access yourself makes it harder for a criminal to impersonate you. “Making sure that you are set up online for your bank, for your merchant, for Social Security. That makes it hard for a criminal to come in and

set up that information in your name,” he said. “Because when a criminal does that and you have not done that, the criminal then looks like the more legitimate owner.” To get more tips for protecting your online identity, go to AARP.org/ FraudWatchNetwork.

U.S. Supreme Court Shines Light on Dark Money

The Federal Election Commission has not yet indicated if the donor disclosure rule will be applied retroactively. (Twenty20) LANSING, Mich. — Voters may soon have a better idea of who’s really behind all those political ads supporting or attacking candidates for President, the U.S. House or the Senate. The Supreme Court just let stand a lower court ruling which forces nonprofit groups to disclose donors who spend more than $200 on ads with messages telling people to vote for or against someone. Craig Mauger, executive director with the Michigan Campaign Finance Network, called it a major victory for fair elections, and said it could scare off some big donors who want their identities to remain secret. “I think it could choke off some of the ‘dark money,’ and it will definitely have a limiting www.desertstarweekly.com

effect on the role of dark money in some of these campaigns,” Mauger said. “It is a positive in terms of the transparency of political money.” Opponents of the decision argue it could squelch political discourse. A recent report from the good-government

watchdog group “Issue One” found that as of 2016, the top 15 so-called dark money donors poured $600 million into federal elections since 2010, when the Supreme Court’s Citizen’s United decision allowed corporations to contribute unlimited funds

without revealing their source. The top four donors identified in that report are the National Rifle Association, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the conservative group Crossroads GPS, and the Koch brothers’ nonprofit, Americans for Prosperity. Mauger noted Americans for Prosperity has spent millions on Michigan’s gubernatorial race without identifying the source of the money - but that’s perfectly legal for statewide races. “Michigan does not have a law that would require the same kind of disclosures that this decision-making is going to require for candidates running for federal office,” Mauger said. The original complaint that spurred this ruling was brought by a campaign finance advocacy group, known as Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, or CREW. CREW sued the Federal Election Commission to force the agency to require the group Crossroads GPS to disclose its donors.

The meeting came amid rumors of Rosenstein’s impending resignation. Rosenstein and Trump had “an extended conversation to discuss the recent news stories,” White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement on Monday. Sanders added that Rosenstein and Trump would meet again on Thursday once the president returns from the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Later AP reported that Rosenstein was heading to

White House expecting to be fired. NBC news reported that Rosenstein has said he will not resign and that White House would have to fire him. The resignation rumors also come days after a New York Times report revealed that Rosenstein suggested secretly recording President Trump in the White House to build a case for invoking the 25th Amendment and removing Trump from office for being unfit. Rosenstein allegedly suggested the secret recording in April of last year, after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey for his handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation. US envoy to the UN, Nikki Haley denied that anyone within Trump’s administration discussed using the 25th Amendment to topple the president, and called such rumors “absurd.” The story was denied by Rosenstein but was touted by some Trump supporters as a reason to fire the Deputy AG. in Missouri on Friday, Trump vowed to rid the Justice Department of “a lingering stench,” and clean it off “evil people.” Trump did not name Rosenstein explicitly but promised to take action. Trump has voiced frustration with the Department of Justice in recent weeks, not just with Rosenstein, but also with Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Trump has blasted Sessions for recusing himself from overseeing Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, and for allowing Democrats within the department to “subvert” his administration. “I don’t have an attorneygeneral. It’s regrettable,” he told the Hill last week. In August, Trump told Fox & Friends that he “put in an attorney general that never took control of the Justice Department, Jeff Sessions.” If Rosenstein were to be fired, Solicitor General Noel Francisco is next in line to take Rosenstein’s position. With that position comes the responsibility of overseeing the Mueller September 26, 2018

Francisco has previously expressed disdain for Special Counsel investigations, stating that these investigations are better left in the hands of career prosecutors within the Department of Justice. While Rosenstein had been relatively content to let the Mueller investigation proceed unhindered, Francisco could refuse to approve Mueller’s

And the good news for all dino-lovers is they’re back yet again in Universal’s “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” now available on DVD and Blu-ray. As the film begins, all

Before these fascinating, yet very dangerous beasts are wiped out forever billionaire Benjamin Lockwood (James Cromwell, “Babe”) asks Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) and Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) to return to the endangered island and find the dinosaurs

Soon Claire and Owen are in peril along with the dinosaurs and Lockwood’s 10-yearold granddaughter Maisie (Isabella Sermon). But as the story unfolds the bad guys better watch out because they could be eaten by the fierce dinosaurs sequestered in the basement of the Lockwood mansion. Artist: Billy F Gibbons Title: The Big Bad Blues (Concord Records) You might like if you enjoy: ZZ Top, James Harman Tell me more: Billy F Gibbons has taken a slight detour from his active role as lead singer and guitarist in ZZ Top to celebrate the blues via his joyful “The Big Bad Blues” album. Offering up a mix of five reworked covers along with six of his own songs, the album is a fully-satisfying celebration of the genre. The lead-off track, a cover of “Missin’ Yo’ Kissin’,” comes the closest to mirroring the Texas blues rock of ZZ Top but fans of that Rock and Roll Hall of Fame trio will be more than pleased with the full collection of songs on “The Big Bad Blues.” The

Gibbons original “My Baby She Rocks” is a relatively slow tune but anchored by a deep groove and some nasty blues harp playing throughout the cut. The faster “Second Line” is a heavy Southern blues rocker, with Gibbons tastefully offering up plenty of flashy guitar work. Gibbons’ “Let the Left Hand Know” is propulsive Chicago blues, with Gibbons’ vocals and guitar work displaying a youthful fire that taps into the love that Gibbons obviously has for the musical form. Blues rarely races along with the speed and fire of “Rollin’ and Tumblin’,” yet another great reason to crank up this winning blues disc. Information: BillyGibbons.com. before Minneapolis-spawned rockers Soul Asylum scored radio hits like “Runaway Train,” “Somebody to Shove” and “Black Gold” they were a genuine punk band that released hard-hitting albums like 1984’s “Say What You Will...Everything Can Happen” and 1986’s “Made To Be Broken.” Both produced by Bob Mould of Hüsker Dü fame, the albums were originally issued by the area record label Twin/Tone and have now been re-released as deluxe editions via Omnivore Recordings. Fans of old school punk rock and Minnesota alternative rock of that era will want to get these expanded editions, loaded with the original track listing of each LP as well as unreleased material and long-unavailable cuts too. Both of the notable reissues were co-produced by Twin/Tone Records cofounder and Replacements manager Peter Jesperson (who first signed the band) and Grammy winner Cheryl Pawelski, with the remastering of the new editions completed

Jonathan Butler’s latest release “Close To You,” a full-length tribute to songs created by the classic team of lyricist Hal David and composer Burt Bacharach. A native of South Africa, Butler has a terrific voice able to tackle the jazz-meets-R&B style of Bacharach’s musical stamp while simultaneously fusing the beloved classics with his own genre-blending style. An early highlight is the uptempo “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again” with soaring vocals, a driving rhythm and all-around great arrangement. The approach on “This Guy’s in Love With You” draws strong and favorable comparisons with the sound of Stevie Wonder’s groundbreaking ‘70s material. “I Say A Little Prayer” has a definite gospel intro before Butler slides into an arrangement showcasing his shining lead guitar work. One of the most impressive turns comes via “Walk On By,” which takes on a wistful and soulful tone. Another standout is “What the World Needs Now Is Love,” which reveals its magic via a sparse but deeply affecting run. Butler even includes one of his own gems, the joyful “Cape Town” whose spirited moodscape is a perfect fit on the winning album. Looking ahead, Butler will be a featured performer on the Dave Koz & Friends tour, which includes a Dec. 18, 2018 date at McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert. Information: JonathanButler.com.

which specializes in such large commercial and government projects. This new generation of solar with a combined solar and battery storage system will enable the theater to be almost entirely electrically independent during its operating hours, which is especially remarkable considering the extreme temperatures of the desert lasting for four or more months annually. Notably, this project precedes much state legislation, such as Senate Bill 700 that mandates 100% renewable energy by 2045 and requires the promotion of energy storage as a solution to the heavily burdened electrical grid through the Self

Generation Incentive Program. Key partners that worked alongside Aeterna Energy include Jack Chen of Energport Inc. storage battery systems manufacturers out of Fremont, California, Alex Nikolakopulos of Nikolakopulos Electrical Engineering well known for decades in the Coachella Valley. Special thanks to Comerica Bank and team VP’s Dan Grady and Jenny Hsu Smyth for boldly stepping forward in the Banks financing of the project, and the entire Tumanjan team from Tumanjan General Contractors. “We are excited to be an early adaptor of this new generation of power generation and energy storage,” said Damon Rubio, Founder of

are also very proud to be doing our part in the community to reduce our carbon footprint.” Unlike traditional energy systems, this solar and battery storage system can store unused solar energy generated during the day, to be used at night, rather than the available power going to waste from overproduction. In addition to benefitting the theater, a project such as this relieves stress on the grid for consumers and also helps Southern California utilities to optimize the amount of renewable energy utilized on the grid, supporting state policymakers goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050. As part of the celebration of going green and becoming more energy self-reliant, the ownership of the Mary Pickford Theater made donations to some local organizations that they are proud to support.

These included Destiny Church, Variety Club of the Desert, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the Boys and Girls Cubs of the Coachella Valley. Michael Tumanjan representing the theater’s ownership stated: “We are proud to be a part of the Coachella Valley Community and contribute to the work of these amazing organizations that enrich and empower the lives of so many individuals.” Award-winning Sandie Newton emceed the event. She currently hosts “KMIR Cares” airing weekly on the local NBC affiliate. Newton carried many industry accolades and was a former host for “Hollywood Insider,” “Hollywood Report,” “Primetime Tonight,” and “Hollywood Steal.” Notably, she was an original anchor for E!, and an entertainment reporter for KCAL Los Angeles. Ingredients Matter Add nutritious, natural ingredients for a healthier you

W FAMILY FEATURES

hen it comes to making tasty meals for your family, you probably know that ingredients matter. From vitamins and nutrients to sugar and acidity, it’s important to know what you’re using in your recipes at every meal and how each ingredient can impact all parts of the body. To help understand how ingre dients matter and how quality ingredients can keep your body healthy, consider these tips from registered dietitian, celebrity nutritionist and healthy cooking expert Keri Glassman, MS, RDN. 1. Mind your veggies. Nearly everyone knows veggies are a vital part of any healthy diet. They are high in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, and pack loads of fiber, but not everyone knows what health benefits you get from specific vegetables. For example, Brussels sprouts are packed with vitamin C to support your immune health and dried figs are known

for lowering blood pressure and optimizing digestion. 2. Just add lemon. Water with lemon can aid in digestion and boost your immune system due to its high vitamin C content, so adding it to water is one way to reap these benefits. While including lemons in your diet has its perks, it’s also important to know they are acidic in nature and eating highly acidic foods can impact your oral health. 3. Be mindful of acid attacks. Every day, everyone’s mouths go through hundreds of “acid attacks,” mainly due to eating and drinking. While a variety of foods can have positive health benefits, they also carry acids that can weaken tooth enamel. To help combat this, take advantage of the acid neutralizing power of baking soda, an ingredient found in Arm & Hammer Toothpastes. Baking soda helps neutralize acids, while gently cleaning and removing plaque, so your teeth

Nuts carry healthy unsaturated fats and omega3 fatty acids, which are good for cardiovascular health, mental health and cholesterol, so they can be a natural component for a healthy diet. Fat can be your friend, but stay mindful about not going overboard, as the calories can add up fast.

1/2 cup dried figs, chopped 1/3 cup finely sliced red onion 4 tablespoons Lemon Dressing 1 grapefruit, segmented 1/3 cup shredded pecorino cheese Heat oven to 375 F. To make Lemon Dressing: mix olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper. On lined baking sheet, toss hazelnuts with olive oil, rosemary, salt and pepper, to taste. Roast 1015 minutes, or until lightly brown; let cool. In large mixing bowl, toss roasted hazelnuts, Brussels sprouts, figs, red onion and dressing until combined. Plate about 1/4 of mixed salad, top with a few grapefruit segments and sprinkle with cheese.

5. Avoid added sugar. Sugar can cause inflammation in people’s bodies and is known to potentially impact cardiovascular health and weight, and can have a negative effect on our teeth. Sugar is often a sneaky ingredient that can be found in condiments and salad dressings. Avoid added sugar by making homemade dressings using lemon juice, oil and herbs, or checking labels to make sure you avoid added sugar whenever possible.

Now is the Time to Address Your Hearing Health

By Desert Star Staff If you find yourself constantly turning up the volume on the TV or asking people to repeat themselves, you’re not alone. In fact, 1 in 5 Americans – nearly 50 million people – ages 12 and older have hearing loss, according to the Hearing Health Foundation. In addition, it takes 10 years, on average, for someone with hearing loss to seek help, according to a study published in the “International Journal of Audiology.” That’s 10 years

of missed conversations with a spouse, compliments from a friend, secrets from a child and laughs with your family, all because many people aren’t sure where to go for care or have misconceptions about hearing aids. As more people, especially younger people, are diagnosed with hearing loss, treatment has become easier to access. Hearing care professionals and hearing aid manufacturers, such as Beltone, have adopted advanced technologies and

novel forms of care to treat an evolving patient population, ensuring that no one has to experience hearing loss alone. If you’re looking to make your hearing health more of a priority, now is the time as these advancements in technology can help improve your hearing and quality of life: Clearer, fuller, richer sound. Newer hearing aids incorporate technology that enable advanced hearing capabilities, helping you understand more speech and

hear the finer details in social and professional settings. Rechargeable. Changing hearing aid batteries is a thing of the past. Now you can have hearing aids with a rechargeable battery (with some lasting up to 30 hours) and a portable charger. Entertainment on demand. Wireless connectivity and Bluetooth technology have made their way to hearing aids. You can now make phone calls and stream TV, videos and more directly to your hearing aids. Some hearing aids, such as the Beltone Amaze, are also fully compatible with both Apple and Android devices. Support is just a click away. Remote fine-tuning allows you to request and receive adjustments to your hearing aids from the comfort of your own home on a computer or from a smartphone. Personal control. If you love restaurants, but hate the noise, an option like the Beltone HearMax app allows users to select personalized, preset environments, such as outdoor or restaurant. The app’s geolocation option also automatically remembers when you’re in a favorite

By Desert Star Staff ATLANTA, Aaron’s, Inc. (NYSE: AAN), a leading omnichannel provider of lease-purchase solutions, and its divisions Aaron’s and Progressive Leasing, announced today that the Aaron’s Foundation has renewed its national partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA). The continued partnership supports the Keystone Club, BGCA’s premier national teen leadership and character program, for an additional three years with a $5 million commitment. A special event was held on September 20 at the Lied Boys & Girls Club in Salt Lake City, Utah, to announce the renewed partnership and Aaron’s continued support of the Keystone Club program. The Lied Boys & Girls Club received a makeover of its Teen Center valued at $25,000, marking the 30th Teen Center renewal to be completed since Aaron’s announced the initial partnership in August 2014. “We knew when we began our partnership in 2014 with Boys & Girls Clubs of America Keystone Club, and believe even more strongly today, that this program is a vital resource for thousands of youths in communities across America,” said John Robinson, Chief Executive Officer of Aaron’s, Inc. “We’ve seen the positive and life-changing effects of our partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs over

the last four years and we’re committed to supporting this incredible organization that not only provides a safe place for teens after school, but also helps in shaping our leaders of tomorrow.” The renewed partnership will build upon the successes the two organizations have achieved since launching the partnership. Aaron’s has sponsored the last four national Keystone Conferences, where thousands of teen leaders from across the world gather and discuss important issues in their lives and communities. The 2018 conference was held in June, where more than 2,000 teens convened in Atlanta and participated in workshops, exchanged ideas, led service projects and socialized with peers. Over the past four years, Aaron’s also performed makeovers at Teen Centers in cities such as Atlanta, Buffalo, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville and San Antonio. Last week’s makeover at the Lied Boys & Girls Club Keystone Teen Center in Salt Lake City was made possible by Aaron’s in-kind donation of furniture, electronics and appliances – and the hard work of the company’s employees. “The Keystone Club makeover in Salt Lake City last week and the last 29 Keystone Club makeovers across the country over the past four years of our partnership is a testimony to the tremendous

efforts by Aaron’s toward making a lasting impact on the communities Boys & Girls Clubs of America serves,” said Jim Clark, President and Chief Executive Officer of Boys & Girls Clubs of America. “We are excited to continue to work with Aaron’s for another three years of partnership to benefit the youth of our country. Now more than ever, our youth need a safe place outside of their schools and homes where they can learn and truly make a difference in their local neighborhoods. With the help of great partners like Aaron’s, we are dedicated to building a greater future for generations to come.” Local Aaron’s and Progressive associates and Club officials worked last Tuesday decorating

and furnishing the Club’s multipurpose space. On Thursday, Aaron’s and Progressive associates and Club officials revealed the new space, which is now equipped with new technology, sectionals, tables and chairs and sound systems. America’s teens are in crisis. One in five students will not graduate from high school, costing the nation $159 billion over their lifetimes. Through Keystone and other BGCA programs, Aaron’s is helping teens own their future by taking ownership of their lives to achieve their maximum potential. Aaron’s hopes to inspire teens to “Own Their Future” through three principles: • Own Your Path: No matter where you come from, the future is yours to decide.

spot and can adjust your hearing aids automatically. Personalized style. Like having your own stylist, hearing care professionals are typically experts in fitting hearing aids to meet your individual needs and tastes. Today’s hearing aids vary in size, color and special features so you can blend in or stand out. Comprehensive customer care. Working with a hearing care professional is essential in treating hearing loss. For example, Beltone’s exclusive care program is available at most of the company’s 1,500 hearing centers nationwide. Follow-up service is just a push of the button away as an easy-to-use mobile app can connect you directly to your hearing care professional. Locate lost hearing aids. This is a feature you’ll never want to use, but will be thankful to have should the need arise. Through the use of apps, you can track your hearing aids if you misplace them. Kavanaugh says he was a virgin in high school

By Desert Star Staff US Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh has denied the accusations he sexually assaulted a woman in high school and exposed himself to another in college, demanding a fair hearing to clear his name. Kavanaugh, nominated by President Donald Trump to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court created by the

retirement of Justice Anthony Kennedy, was interviewed by Fox News’s Martha McCallum on Monday evening, alongside his wife Ashley. “The truth is I’ve never sexually assaulted anyone, not in high school, not ever,” he said, responding to claims by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford that he attempted to rape her during a high school house party sometime in 1982.

Kavanaugh denied even knowing Ford, who was a couple years younger. “We did not travel in the same social circles,” he told McCallum. “I was never at any such party.” “I am not questioning and have not questioned that perhaps Dr. Ford at some point in her life was sexually assaulted by someone at some place, but what I know is I’ve never sexually assaulted

Watch new live compilation video of “Hunger” HERE “King Kobra always did well in Europe and being able

to play 30 years later with the band at one of the best festivals in Europe was a thrill. We played and rocked the house with the audience singing and having a great time.” Johnny Rod added “It felt great playing the festival and to know that the fans remembered us. True rock will never die!” King Kobra was formed in 1984 and led by seasoned drummer Carmine Appice (Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, Bogart & Appice, Rod Stewart) after he left Ozzy Osbourne’s band. With Mark Free on vocals he secured a recording contract with Capitol Records .Appice recruited Keel’s guitarist David Michael Phillips; wildman bassist Johnny Rod; and guitarist Mick Sweda

(Bulletboys). King Kobra recorded two acclaimed albums and toured the world supporting formidable headliners KISS, Iron Maiden and Queensryche. In 1988, Appice received a call from John Sykes and Tony Franklin to join Blue Murder, and after four years, King Kobra was solemnly laid to rest. The group, however, returned in 2010, with a new King Kobra line up that featured Carmine Appice on drums, Paul Shortino taking over vocal duties, Mick Sweda on guitar, David Henzerling (a.k.a. anyone,” Kavanaugh added. When McCallum brought up the claim by attorney Michael Avenatti –most recently seen on CNN representing adult actress Stormy Daniels in a lawsuit against Trump’s lawyer Michael Cohen– that Kavanaugh was involved in setting up “rape trains”at high school parties, the federal judge was shocked, revealing that he was a virgin in high school and “for many years thereafter.” “It’s totally false and outrageous,” Kavanaugh said.“I did not have sexual intercourse or anything close to sexual intercourse in high school or for many years thereafter.” “So you were a virgin?” McCallum asked. “That’s correct,” Kavanaugh replied. He refused to speculate on who might be behind manufacturing the accusations against him, and repeatedly demanded a “fair process, a process in which I can defend my integrity and clear my name.” “I have faith in God and

I have faith in the fairness of the American people,” Kavanaugh said. “I didn’t do this or anything resembling this. This is wrong.” Ford’s claim against Kavanaugh surfaced after the Senate Judiciary Committee wrapped up his confirmation hearings, and has already delayed a vote on his confirmation. Since the letter went public, Ford has demanded a FBI investigation into her claims and tried to delay the hearing so she could drive from California to Washington, DC, due to reportedly being afraid of flying. She also demanded Kavanaugh testify before her at any Senate hearing. Republicans have already rescheduled the hearing twice, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) on Monday hinted that his patience might be at an end, calling the accusations against Kavanaugh a “shameful smear campaign” and vowing to hold a vote on his nomination.

A husband and wife team will be knighted together

Gary and Meredith Krupp Knight and Dame of the Grand Cross Pave the Way Foundation By Desert Star Staff WANTAGH, N.Y., -- By decree of Pope Francis, for the first time since the inception of the Vatican State of the

Order of St. Gregory the Great in 1831, a husband and wife team will be knighted together. Gary and Meredith Krupp, the founders of Pave the Way

Foundation, and who are both Jewish, will be invested into the Highest Vatican State order that can be awarded to a lay person, as Knight

of the Grand Cross and Dame of the Grand Cross. Pave the Way Foundation has been dubbed “the most important organization in the world that no one has ever heard of” for effective, behind the scenes, work through which it has changed the course of history between religions. The Papal decrees were signed in Rome by the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin on June 18, 2018. The medals will be awarded to Mr. and Mrs. Krupp, along with required reading of the degrees, on October 1, 2018, in New York, by the Vatican Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, and the Vatican’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Archbishop Bernardito Auza. Golden State’s New Parents Lack Sufficient Support

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. — In California, 350,000 kids have a young mom or dad between ages 18 and 24, and 65 percent of those kids live in low-income households, according to a report released today by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. The study showed that nationwide 3.4 million kids have young parents - who have to transition to adulthood, careers, self-sufficiency and parenthood all at the same time. Kelly Hardy, senior managing director with the

nonprofit Children Now, said there are many ways the government could help lift these families out of poverty. “Support in housing and more affordable child care options, more flexible work situations and help with college tuition is an especially important support for young parents,” Hardy said. Hardy praised state lawmakers for recently injecting $158 million into a program that sends nurses to visit families of newborns, but she thinks it should be expanded further. The report

said kids would benefit if authorities lowered the age limits on the state and federal Earned Income Tax Credits - something that would help many young parents afford child support. Rosa Maria Castaneda, senior associate with the Annie E. Casey Foundation, said fathers play a critical role in children’s development, but they are often left out of programs that support young families. “They want to be involved in their children’s lives. However, they’re less likely

to be supported through many of our programs and policies to be able to be involved and to be able to provide for their children,” Castaneda said. “They are really neglected. We should support their involvement.” The report also advocated raising the minimum wage nationwide and boosting young adults’ access to higher education and jobtraining programs. An estimated 281,000 Californians between 18 and 24 have children, 82 percent of which are people of color.

By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK, Judge Charles R. Breyer of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California was notified early this morning with a personal call from Justice Anthony M. Kennedy that he will be the recipient of the prestigious 34th Annual Devitt Award, our nation’s highest honor bestowed upon a Article III federal judge. The ceremony and celebration will take place on November 7, 2018 at the Supreme Court of the United States in the presence of the Supreme Court Justices and 100 invited guests. As brother of Justice Stephen Breyer, this is the first time that a relation of any Justice of the Supreme Court will receive the Devitt. Justice Kennedy chaired this year’s selection committee which included Judge Raymond Kethledge of the United StatesCourt of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and Judge Lucy Koh of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. The committee deliberated over

two days in New York City along with the award sponsor, the Dwight D. Opperman Foundation executives. “I am grateful to Justice Kennedy and the esteemed judges who reviewed an unprecedented number of highly impressive and fiercely dedicated nominees from all across the country,” Julie C. Opperman said, the Foundation chairman. “The committee and I are fascinated and inspired by the integrity, the commitment and the dedication of federal judges throughout the country,” Devitt Committee Chairman, Justice Kennedy stated. “The committee noted that in addition to his nationwide reputation as being a skilled and fine trial judge, he has contributed to the judiciary in many ways including being on the panel for multi-district litigation and on the United States Sentencing Commission. Most important of all is the great respect that Judge Breyer enjoys among his own colleagues, members of the bar and the community

at large. He honors us all by his continued commitment to the Rule of Law and the Constitution that it sustains.” Judge Breyer said in response, “I am honored to accept the Devitt Award.” He added, “Even more so, I feel very privileged to have worked with so many selfless and dedicated colleagues over the past two decades. Their work in promoting the Rule of Law is the true award.” “Judge Breyer’s exemplary record of service illustrates well the prestigious nature of the Devitt Award,” said Judge Raymond Kethledge. Judge Lucy Koh continued, “He generously shares his time and wisdom with lawyers and

judges in need of guidance. Judge Breyer volunteers to take extra cases to help his colleagues as well as assisting other districts in need.” After attending college at Harvard and law school at Berkley, Judge Breyer entered public service, joining the Army Reserve and working as a line prosecutor in the San Francisco attorney’s office. In 1973 he joined the Watergate Special Prosecution Force in Washington and then returned to San Francisco where he went into private practice. In 1998, he was appointed as a district judge in the Northern District of California. SOURCE: PRNewswire- The Dwight D. Opperman Foundation

Insightful Dramedy “The Cake” is Tasty!

L-R: Rod McLachlan and Debra Jo Rupp. Photo by Christ Whitaker. By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) Strong writing and a compelling plotline plus a talented cast of professionals adds up to wining over even the toughest of audiences when it comes to accepting and embracing the new realities in the ever-changing and evolving 21st century American theatrical landscape. Plays, movies, and TV shows today are not the entertainment fare remembered by our grandparents. A new century opened up opportunities to explore creative ideas and concepts in all the art forms. Contrary to the admonitions of George Bernard Shaw, who in the 20th century, penned the witty quip, “It’s a pity that youth is wasted on the young” was not as prescient as he thought he was. Every age requires that the torches be passed forward. It’s in the natural order of things. The old accedes to the young. The writers, playwrights and creative artist-ranks of today, are filled with bright, talented and intellectual practitioners hungry for venues to present their work. The Geffen is one the venues that are willing to explore and work with these emerging playwrights. Case in point, is the current production of “The Cake” now on stage at the Geffen Playhouse in Westwood, CA. The story is loosely drawn from an incident that occurred in Colorado in 2012. A samesex male couple walked into a bakery shop one day and requested a wedding cake for their impending marriage. The male baker refused to create the cake claiming his religious tenets as the reason for his refusal. That 2012 legal tussle is finally bound for the Supreme Court in 2019. The story that playwright Bekah Brunstetter, intelligently crafts and the one that Jennifer Chambers deftly directs, revolves around Jen (Shannon Lucio) who lives in New York but has always dreamed of getting married in her rural North Carolina hometown. So she heads down south with www.desertstarweekly.com

her partner Macy (Carolyn Ratteray) to ask Della (Debra Jo Rupp), her late mother’s best friend, to do the honor of creating a wedding cake from her well known bakery. Della’s cakes are legendary, even earning her a spot as a contestant on the TV show the “Great American Baking Show”, voiced and hosted, but not seen, by George (Morrison Keddie). Della is thrilled at Jen’s request, until she realizes there’s not just one bride, but two, forcing Della to re-examine some of her deeply-held beliefs, as well as her own relationship and marriage with her husband Tim (Rod McLachian). Faith, family, and traditions are on a collision course in this achingly poignant and insightfully written and performed comedy-drama. Often thorny societal issues like same-sex marriage are easier to understand and embrace, for some, when comedy is the vehicle of delivery to an audience. The underlying message of empathy and acceptance by the characters also become easier for the audience to relate to in this era of diversity casting and genderbending character roles. There are four finely judged performances – both dramatic and comedic - that shine in this production. Ms. Rupp is a savvy show business veteran who knows how to reach and please an audience with comedy timing that cannot be taught. Either one has it or one doesn’t. Ms. Rupp definitely has it. And she has her dramatic side as well in her scenes with Mr. McLachian, who renders a gruff husband veneer, at times, but is a devoted husband. Ms. Ratteray’s character as Macy is not only riveting to watch but is a study in taking the stage and knowing what to do when upon it. She has a 5000 watt smile that lights up a room (the same smile I saw when she performed in “Pygmalion” with Bruce Turk, at the Pasadena Playhouse a few years ago. The performances of Ms. Ratteray and Ms. Lucio as Jen, are gold standard performing moments. Their on-stage chemistry is palpable. One can feel Jen’s insecurities and emotional pain of not

L-R: Carolyn Ratteray and Shannon Lucio. Photo by Christ Whitaker. being able to ‘come out’ to her mother before she died, plus the disappointment of Della’s decision to not bake Macy and Jen’s wedding cake, all of which, strains their relationship as well. With Macy’s strength and Jen’s desire we root for these two young women to succeed in their life journey together. Ms. Chambers’ creative directorial touches are everywhere and they are seamless in execution. One of the best compliments a director can receive is that their presence was absent. But

Ms. Chambers was not missing in the ‘love scenes’ between Ms. Lucio and Ms. Ratteray. Her inputs are not gratuitous; they’re tastefully performed without losing any impact. The beauty of this excellent production lies in the full blown honest, authentic, and appealing characters created by Ms. Brunstetter, along with the smart direction of Ms. Chambers that avoids the traps of clichés and the usual cardboard memes and tropes associated with same-sex character stories. The technical creative

team led by director Chambers includes Scenic Designer Hickok who nicely creates three distinct performing areas: two-bedroom areas and the main bakery shop space. All areas are lighted by Lighting Designer Pablo Santiago, with Costumes designed by Elizabeth Caitlin Ward, and the Sound Design by Jeff Gardner, complete the creative team. “The Cake” is a splendid production that performs at the Geffen Playhouse and runs through October 21, 2018. Don’t Miss It.
