No Defeats Thus Far for the Indio-Based Desert Chiefs Semi-Pro Football Team By Dan Marinelli INDIO — Somewhere between high school football on Friday nights and NFL Sunday, the Desert Chiefs, Indio’s semipro football team, have found a home. “The team was started when a group of 40 young men approached me and asked me to start a football team,” said Rosie Welmas, owner of the Desert
Chiefs and founder / CEO and of the charitable organization Rosie’s Kids (rosieskids.com). “So I went for it.” The Desert Chiefs are in their inaugural season, with the first tryout for the team taking place in May. Their first game was on August 17 and they’ve been rolling ever since. By defeating the Santa Barbara Seminoles at Shadow
Hills High School last Saturday, the Desert Chiefs won their fifth straight game and are now 5-0. “Most of our players are amateurs in the semi-pro world but most have been playing since they were in youth football,” Welmas said. Led by Coach Rich Botich, the Desert Chiefs’ on-field talent is comprised mostly of local players. Even though it’s “semi-

They have dreams of making it to the pros and play their hardest

Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, along with the Steep Canyon Rangers, will perform songs from their new album, “Love Has Come for You,” on Oct. 9 at the McCallum Theatre. PALM DESERT – Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, along with the Steep Canyon Rangers, will perform songs from their new album, “Love Has Come for You,” on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at the McCallum Theatre. The evening presentation will showcase new material performed by Martin and Brickell, along with the unique hybrid of bluegrass and comedy with which Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers have been delighting audiences at their sold-out, critically acclaimed shows. Martin is currently in the fifth decade of a uniquely accomplished career in which he’s excelled as a comedian, actor, author / playwright, and Grammy-winning bluegrass banjoist and composer. He has also hosted the Academy Awards and been accorded a Kennedy Center Honor. Martin’s fellow Texas native Edie Brickell, burst onto the national scene in the late 1980s fronting the New Bohemians, and she has since carved out an iconoclastic solo career that’s solidified her reputation as a compelling singer and a songwriter of rare insight.
Although the new musical partners have built widely-loved individual bodies of work, their inaugural album as a duo is a substantial departure and a creative milestone for both. “Love Has Come for You” offers 13 eloquently rootsy Martin / Brickell compositions that combine the former’s inventive, expressive
five-string banjo playing with the latter’s heart-tugging vocals and vivid lyrics. The album is the product of a songwriting partnership. Martin invited Brickell to write lyrics for a banjo tune he’d recently created. Despite living on opposite coasts, their working relationship quickly blossomed, with the two writing
separately and exchanging digital files via email. The results of the pair’s unconventional co-writing method are inspired — combining the gentle yet feisty humanity of Brickell’s vocals with the effortless economy of Martin’s banjo work. In 2011, the Steep Canyon Rangers released its first collaborative record with Steve Martin, “Rare Bird Alert,” which debuted at number one on Billboard’s Bluegrass Chart. In 2010, the latest solo record from Steep Canyon Rangers, “Deep in the Shade,” remained in the Bluegrass Top 10 on Billboard for 18 weeks. While headlining festivals like MerleFest and Bonnaroo alongside Steve Martin, the Rangers continue perform alone as a quintet on stages such as Telluride Bluegrass Festival and “A Prairie Home Companion,” with Garrison Keillor. With smooth vocals, smart songwriting, ferocious instrumentals and jawdropping harmony, the Rangers are bringing Bluegrass to music lovers across the U.S. and around the world. The Palm Desert performance begins at 8 p.m. at the McCallum Theatre, located at 73000 Fred Waring Dr. Tickets are $125, $95, $75 and $65, and they are available by calling 760-340ARTS or visiting mccallumtheatre. com.

A Glorious ‘Pi’ in Your Eye, Plus ‘Sessions’ for the Heart By Theda Kleinhans Reichman Hollywood is coming to the end of its annual summer boil. Every fall, movies shift from robots and comic book heroes to Oscar contenders for mature audiences. During this transition, there’s a period of doldrums when few new releases are offered. So I decided to catch up with some of the films I missed that are now on DVD and Blu-ray. Two easy ways to access
recent oldies is via Netflix and at that handy-dandy Redbox in your neighborhood grocery store. Using the latter, I checked out two fine motion pictures I had not seen prior to this year’s Oscars. One of these gems, “Life of Pi,” won Ang Lee the gold statuette for best director. The film also landed countless technical awards, and deservedly so. The story, about a 16-year-old Indian boy who survives a shipwreck and
is stranded alone on a lifeboat in the Pacific with a Bengal tiger, is highly involving, visually stunning and spiritually uplifting. (It is based on Yann Martel’s 2001 novel of the same name.) A major plus on the DVD is the making-of feature. I was especially curious about the photo-realistic special effects and methods used to create the animals, particularly the tiger; how the filmmakers pulled it off may

surprise you, as it did me. That the wonderful actor in the main role, Suraj Sharma, had no previous formal training as a thespian may surprise you, as well. My other Redbox selection was “The Sessions,” starring the always marvelous Helen Hunt as a sex therapist. (She was nominated for her work here in the Best Actress category.) The film, based on a true story, is about a writer (John Hawkes) who has been confined to an iron lung following a severe bout with

Music Summit to Launch Battle of Bands CATHEDRAL CITY – This year’s Interfusion Music Summit (IMS), running Oct. 10-13, will include a new event called Battle of the Local Bands. “This is the third year for IMS and we wanted to come up with something that would get more locals involved in this national music event,” said IMS co-producer Allen Edwards of PNN Media Group. Drawing talent from around the world, IMS is all about DJs, bands and artists descending on the desert for workshops, roundtables, seminars and live performances. IMS will now have an exclusive schedule for local performers to compete for a chance to win a day of recording in a Cathedral City professional recording studio, complete with sound engineer and the works. They will also get a national branding package along with public relations and
marketing consultation. IMS is intended for music industry professionals to revive their careers, learn marketing and promotion techniques, boost business and discuss the future of the music industry. The weekend consists of a live downtown concert where the public is welcome to come and watch all genres of music performances. This year’s “Concert in the Square” will broadcast all performances on Livestream.com and on Roku’s Netflix box. Judging will be conducted by a panel of music professionals. Coachella Valley residents can also get involved, with on-location ballots to be made available for residents to vote for their favorite Battle of the Bands participants. Fire Station to Get Mattress Makeover RANCHO MIRAGE – In recognition of National Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 6-12, and our selfless firefighters, iconic mattress retailer Sit ‘n Sleep is teaming with mattress manufacturer Tempur-Pedic to donate 140 mattresses to five Southern California fire stations. The Rancho Mirage Fire Station is among them. Sit ‘n Sleep will deliver the new mattresses to the station, located at 70801 Highway 111, on Tuesday, Oct. 8, and haul away the old ones. Attendees at the 10 a.m. event will include Rancho Mirage Mayor Richard Kite, Riverside
County Fire Battalion Chief Rick Griggs and firefighters from the Rancho Mirage Fire Station. A good night’s sleep is imperative to keep firefighters well-rested so they can continue to do the dangerous job of keeping their communities safe. Unfortunately, due to budget cuts and other rising costs, mattresses are often the last items replaced in fire stations. “Our goal is to provide customers with great mattresses for a good night’s sleep, and we are pleased to deliver that promise to local firehouses,” said Larry Miller, chief executive officer of Sit ‘n Sleep, which is

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (619)590-1221 or visit the internet website www.dlppllc.com, using the file number assigned to this case 1383672-31.
