‘‘Forever Marilyn’’ Officials — Marilyn Monroe Statue To Return To Palm Springs PS News Staff A 26-foot-tall Marilyn Monroe statue that was in Palm Springs from 2012 to 2014 will return to the city, two city officials confirmed Wednesday. Reports that “Forever
Marilyn” would return was confirmed by Palm Springs Councilman J.R. Roberts. Mayor Robert Moon told The Desert Sun the statue would return to the city on a permanent basis. There was
By Desert Star Staff IRVINE, Calif., -- ‘Twas the week of National Taco Day, and all through the Bell, team members prepared tasty gift sets with shells. Because on that special day, October the 4th, our Season of Giving begins, from that moment, henceforth. So, what does that mean? Well, we’re so glad you asked. Allow us to explain, we’ll make it real fast. The National Taco Day Gift Set is back. In Taco Bells all over the US - and that is a fact. It includes four tacos of the iconic variety: two crunchy and two with even more notoriety. We’re speaking, of
course, of the beloved DLT. The gift set carries two that are flavored Nacho Cheese. Eat it all up or bestow it upon a friend, because for only $5, there’s no wrong way to spend. If your loved one lives far, there’s no need to fret. We’ve got other ways to gift, on that you can bet. Send a digital gift card for five dollars plus tax, even add a personal message to include with the snacks. But the Taco Day fun doesn’t stop in the States. Our international Bells will also celebrate. Their offerings may vary, but the

and some not so much but at the end of the day she’s become part of our brand,” Roberts told The Desert Sun. The statue — based on a photograph by Bruno Bernard taken during the 1955 filming

3 Holiday Activities to Engage with Loved Ones By Desert Star Staff Any time can be the right time to enjoy memorable moments with family members, but the holidays present a special opportunity to have meaningful conversations and interactions with loved ones. One of the best ways to spark creativity and generate memories is through activities that get the conversation started, whether it’s remembering favorite moments from the past or simply sharing notes of appreciation. This holiday season, consider these activity ideas from the Funeral and Memorial Information Council, which created the “Have the Talk of a Lifetime” initiative to encourage families to facilitate conversations that become invaluable when the time comes to honor a loved one. While these conversations can be difficult to engage in and even harder to begin, the natural bonding moments that stem from activities like these can help make the process easier.
Gratitude Tree Start a new tradition by creating a gratitude tree, a simple decoration you can look forward to using each year as a reminder of what you and
your family are thankful for. To make a gratitude tree, collect twigs or branches, dry them out and cut them to the desired lengths. Put the branches in a vase or decorative container. Punch holes at the tops of fall-colored paper to be used as tags then instruct guests to write what they’re grateful for on each tag. Take turns reading the tags and tie them to the branches then keep the handwritten tags in a safe place until they can be read again each holiday season. Over the years, as the tree fills up, you’ll have a lifetime of memories to share. Time Capsule Making a holiday-inspired time capsule can help strengthen family bonds while preserving treasured memories and creating opportunities for future holidays when it’s time to reopen the contents. Use a sealed container or plastic bag to protect items from moisture and mold then place the container in a box that can be decorated and stored in a safe place with related holiday decorations. Mark on the container the date it was created for future reference, and pack it with items like familyfavorite recipes; notes about
Photo courtesy of Getty Images significant events from that year like births, weddings, graduations and more; copies of newspapers detailing high-profile happenings; and pictures, drawings and notes from the year. If you’re patient enough to wait, try leaving the contents undisturbed at least five years to give the memories even more meaning when the time comes to relive those special moments. Memories Tablecloth
To help keep important family footnotes front and center during future celebrations, a memorial tablecloth provides each person an opportunity to personalize a piece of popular decor. As you gather around the table for holiday meals, ask each family member to jot down a favorite memory or something he or she is thankful for along with a signature and date. You can make it an annual event by using the same
tablecloth each year and, before long, it will be filled with personal memories as a way to cherish relationships as time goes on. Just use an appropriately sized, inexpensive white canvas drop cloth. Place fabric markers in the center of the table before inviting guests to participate, and to help distinguish each year, try using different colored markers. American Prairie Reserve Scales Back Bison Grazing Plans
By Desert Star Staff HELENA, Mont. – In the face of local concern about bison, the American Prairie Reserve has revised its grazing application for the animals on federal lands in northeastern Montana. The group – aiming to create the largest nature reserve in the continental United States – originally sought permission to graze bison year-round on 18 Bureau of Land Management allotments and 20 state leases covering 290,000 acres, and remove interior fencing.
The newest application requests seasonal grazing on only five BLM allotments and five state leases covering 48,000 acres with slight modifications to fencing. “We are committed to being really good neighbors with people and we thought that this was an excellent opportunity to demonstrate that by scaling back our request to what we had been doing originally for about 15 years, and that is requesting these change of uses on case-by-case or allotmentby-allotment basis,” says Pete
Geddes, vice president of American Prairie Reserve.” Earlier this year, state lawmakers passed a nonbinding resolution expressing concern about the wildlife conservation group’s original year-round proposal, so the group also has requested a demonstration project of yearround grazing on one BLM allotment and one state lease. The main group pushing this legislation, the United Property Owners of Montana, still opposes the revised application and says bison grazing is a “radical
departure” from BLM policy. However, BLM spokesman Al Nash says there is precedent for this. “We have several other BLM permittees across the nation and even in Montana that graze bison,” he explains. “So the change of livestock from cattle to bison isn’t typical but it’s certainly not unique.” Local residents also expressed concern that this change could damage the land used for grazing cattle. But Geddes points out that bison are adapted to the grasslands of Montana, where they evolved, and don’t have to be rotated in the same fashion as cattle.
“We’ve had bison grazing in one big pasture for quite a long time without having to move them around artificially, and the resource is just fine, and we shouldn’t be surprised by that,” he points out. “Again, this is the native grazer.” The American Prairie Reserve bison herd has grown to about 850 since the group formed in 2001. New rules being developed by the state aim to reduce air pollution from tailpipes, which are the largest source of climate-change inducing emissions. (Orlando/Adobe Stock) By Desert Star Staff ST. PAUL, Minn. – Gov. Tim Walz has just declared Minnesota a Clean Car State, and directed the Minnesota Pollution Control Administration to start making rules to limit tailpipe pollution in many cars, and increase
the number of electric vehicles sold in the state. The new rules would mimic those in 14 other states and Washington, D.C. State Sen. Nick Frentz, D-Mankato, says this will give Minnesota car buyers a lot more options.
“Right now in the United States, there are 43 different models sold, but only 19 are available in Minnesota,” he points out. “So we’re talking about changes that will not only benefit public health, but hopefully reduce our carbon emissions” All current cars, trucks and SUVs would remain on the market. Transportation is the number one source of climate change-causing pollution in the state. Supporters say introduction of more clean cars would also significantly improve air quality. Opponents say the changes could increase the cost of some cars. Paul Billings, national senior vice president for public policy for the American Lung Association, says
the changes will lower the amount families spend on gas and repairs while protecting the environment. “The American public wants cleaner air,” he states. “They want to address climate change. They want to have the most efficient motor vehicles.” Just last week, the Trump administration moved to stop states from establishing higher emissions standards than those set by the federal government. Minnesota is part of a multi-state lawsuit filed to uphold the states’ rights under the Clean Air Act to set their own standards. Heather Mae’s Debut LP Glimmer By Desert Star Staff Today, Washington, DCbased award-winning singer/ songwriter Heather Mae releases her debut full-length album GLIMMER, a collection of nine songs supporting one central theme: “Feel To Heal.” Within the grooves of the new album, Mae wrestles with the complexities of existing as a human with mental illness, each song penned while experiencing the “lows” of Bipolar Disorder to create her rawest, most vulnerable work to date. Unfazed by what a typical pop artist today is “supposed” to look like and how the regular pop artist is “supposed” to sound, Mae, whose evocative vocals and rhythmic piano style call to mind artists like Stevie Nicks and Sara Bareilles, creates intoxicating music that tackles complex topics surrounding mental health, LGBTQ+ issues, self-love, racial injustice, social inequality, and women’s rights. Inspired by her own personal experiences and identities - a queer, plus-size woman living with Bipolar Disorder - and those of her multifaceted fans with whom she has forged connections throughout her many years of touring across the United States, GLIMMER brims with powerful lyrics and unforgettable music about life’s moments--from the quietly chaotic to the explosive. “I hear the voice of my great-granddaughter saying fight for me, fight for me now,” Mae sings on album opener “Warrior,” a #MeTooinspired feminist anthem which features a choir of 100+ female vocalists. Of “You Are My Favorite,” written for her wife and inspired by her own wedding vows. Mae told Glide Magazine, “It is a love song… but it is also a protest song: until the day every nation passes anti-discrimination laws for LGBTQ+ people, big and loud LGBTQ+ love will always be an act of protest. One day, I hope my songs about my wife will be seen as boring love songs, just like every other love song out there, but until that day, I will sing of our love proudly and loudly.” Mae paid tribute to PRIDE by releasing a video for “Be Not Afraid,” which featured J. Harrison Ghee, star of Broadway musical Kinky Boots, along with Mae and a cast of LGBTQ+ actors and dancers. In observance of World Suicide Prevention Day which occurred on September 10th, Mae released empowerment anthem “I’m Still Here,” saying, “I know the face of death. She has stood in my room, over my bathtub, sat on the edge of my bed. I have felt the pills in my hands. I have felt the knife on my skin. I have almost given in...but I am still here.” Mae is here to shake up the status quo with her message: “Feel To Heal.” In

2016, after eight months of silence to recover from vocal nodules, Mae made a vow: she would dedicate her career to solely write music that made the world a better place. Her independently-released debut EP I AM ENOUGH, which reached #58 on iTunes Pop Album charts, was her announcement to the world. Mae’s music champions those whose voices have been marginalized. “I had a goal when I was writing these songs -- for (fans) and for me,” she told Billboard. “The messages I get are not ‘Yeah, I partied to your songs this weekend and I went on a road trip and blasted your songs.’ What I get is, ‘I didn’t commit suicide ‘cause I listened to your song’ or ‘I came out because of you’ or ‘I left my abusive partner because of
your song.’ Those are the messages I get. So f*** this music business; as long as
I’m doing the work of keeping people alive, I’m successful.” GLIMMER is available

‘Booksmart’ --A Smart and Sassy Look at Today’s Teens
When I went to high school years ago things were a whole lot different than they are in “Booksmart,” a film about two modern millennial BFFs. My best friend Jennie and I, like Amy (Kaitlyn Dever, TV’s “Last Man Standing”) and Molly (Beanie Feldstein, the sister of funny guy Jonah Hill) were really close. We did everything together from art classes to acting in the senior class play. However, this is where any mutual similarity ends. While we went to an all girl’s parochial school run by nuns, Amy and Molly are seniors who go to a swinging co-ed high school in the San Fernando Valley. As “Booksmart” begins, Amy and Molly are contemplating their future. Their senior year has come to an end, and they are about to enter a whole new academic world. Molly is off to Yale, while Amy is headed to Africa to do volunteer work before starting college. As they talk, Molly realizes they made top grades but never had fun like their peers did. When Molly finds out that there is going to be a big farewell party at school president Nick’s house,
www.desertstarweekly.com
she is determined to crash it and end their high school days with a bang. It takes some coaxing, but she finally gets her introverted pal Amy to come with her that night. First, they have to figure out where Nick lives. The next step is getting there. This involves their odd-ball principal (Jason Sudeikis) who moonlights as a rideshare driver and a hip, very supportive teacher (Jessica Williams) who makes sure they look beautiful. While in the school bathroom earlier in this eventful day, Molly overhears her peers talking about their future plans. It turns out that they too will be going to prestigious “colleges--but unlike Molly and Amy, they had lots of fun during their high school days. This is the impetus for her desire to go to the big party, so their high school days will end with a big blowout. Amy, who came out as a lesbian to her lovely and understanding parents (Lisa Kudrow and Will Forte) not long ago, has a crush on a spacey fellow classmate named Ryan (Victoria Ruesga) who will be at this big graduation bash. This is one of the reasons
Amy reluctantly agrees to go to the party with her BFF. “Booksmart” was directed by actress turned director Olivia Wilde (TV’s “House’) and written by Emily Halpern, Sarah Haskins, Susanna Fogel, and Katie Silberman. The film takes a modernday look at the ups and downs of being a high school teenager in today’s world. Even if we were teenagers awhile back, we could still
September 27, 2019
relate to trying to fit in and be accepted in high school. Or anywhere for that matter. Overall the teenage experiences in the film are both funny and touching. It can be hard to reach out to someone. You can get hurt, but it’s worth the effort. One criticism, however, is the overuse of the F- word. Less would have been more. “Booksmart,” from Annapurna Pictures, is rated
R for strong sexual content and language throughout, drug use and drinking--all involving teens. Running time: 1 hour, 45 minutes. “Booksmart,’ now available on DVD, features interviews with director Olivia Wilde, actors Beanie Feldstein, Kaitlyn Dever and other cast members as well as set and costume designers. Learning how the film was crafted and created adds to the fun.

Whistleblower says White House tried to cover up Trump’s abuse of power
News Staff President Donald Trump abused his official powers “to solicit interference” from Ukraine in the upcoming 2020 election, and the White House took steps to cover it up, according to a stunning whistleblower complaint released Thursday. Several White House officials were “deeply disturbed” by Trump’s July 25 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and tried to “lock down” all records of the phone call, especially the word-for-word transcript produced by the White House, the complaint states. The complaint has been at the center of a controversy that has spurred Democrats to launch a formal impeachment inquiry. The White House on Wednesday also released a rough transcript of the call that shows Trump repeatedly pressed Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. Caving to Democratic demands, the Trump administration let Congress release a declassified version of the complaint, one day after releasing a rough transcript of the Trump-Zelensky call. The developments triggered a flood of Democratic lawmakers to publicly support impeachment. Trump has maintained that he didn’t do anything wrong, while simultaneously promoting unfounded conspiracy theories about the Bidens, Ukraine, and Russian meddling in 2016. There is no evidence of wrongdoing by either Joe or Hunter Biden. White House lawyers asked to remove transcript The complaint notes White House lawyers were “already in discussion” about “how to treat the call because of the likelihood, in the officials’ retelling, that they had witnessed the president abuse his office for personal gain.” White House lawyers also directed officials to remove the transcript of the call from a computer system that stores them for Cabinet-level officials and instead put the transcript in a system for especially sensitive information, the whistleblower alleges. This move concerned some officials, who shared their worries internally that this was an “abuse of the system.” The whistleblower said they heard from other White House officials that this was “not the first time” that the Trump administration used this storage system to hold politically sensitive documents. The codeword-level system is meant to hold files of national security importance. There weren’t additional details in the complaint, and some of the details came

from secondhand sources. Republicans on Capitol Hill have used that point to question the veracity of the complaint, though the intelligence community inspector general already deemed it credible. Rudy Giuliani’s role worried State Dept officials US officials were concerned, the whistleblower said, with Trump’s private lawyer Rudy Giuliani and his contacts with Ukrainian officials. The whistleblower alleges the US officials believed Giuliani was a conduit for messages between the President and officials in Kyiv and that he was at the helm of a problematic “circumvention of national security decisionmaking processes.” For most of the past two years, Giuliani has played a peculiar role as Trump’s personal attorney, a pro-Trump surrogate on television, and as an informal diplomat of sorts. This year, he has used his position to promote conspiracy theories about Ukraine, Biden, and the 2016 election. The whistleblower said they heard that two State Department officials intervened with Giuliani in an effort to “contain the damage” he was doing to national security. The complaint also said US diplomats worked with the new Ukrainian leaders to help them navigate the strange situation, where they juggled outreach from Giuliani with US diplomacy coming through official channels. State Department officials met with Ukrainian political figures and provided advice “about how to ‘navigate’ the demands that the President had made of” Zelensky, the whistleblower wrote. Little is known about the identity of the whistleblower, which is even still hidden from some of the most senior US intelligence officials. The Justice Department has said there are some indications that the whistleblower opposes Trump’s reelection, but the complaint was indeed credible. They used lawful channels to file the complaint and get the message to Congress. Trump potentially exposed to blackmail In a letter accompanying the whistleblower’s complaint, Intelligence Community Inspector General Michael Atkinson wrote that the alleged conduct by Trump “would also potentially expose” the President “to serious national security and counterintelligence risks with respect to foreign intelligence services aware of such alleged conduct.” The implication is that US adversaries are always spying on the US and trying to intercept sensitive phone
calls by US officials. If a hostile government possesses a recording or is aware of the details of Trump’s phone call, they could use it to blackmail Trump. The gravest risk is from Russia, which is essentially at war with Ukraine and has strong intelligence capabilities. Atkinson also wrote in his letter that that the whistleblower’s complaint amounts to a “serious or flagrant problem [or] abuse” under US laws regarding the inspector general’s office. The comments were made in an August 26 letter sent to acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire. Atkinson explains the reasoning behind his determination that the information amounted to an “urgent concern,” which triggered its eventual transmission to Congress. Whistleblower confused by Trump’s CrowdStrike interest The whistleblower

expresses confusion about Trump’s references to CrowdStrike during his calls with Zelensky. The Democratic National Committee hired CrowdStrike in 2016 to investigate hacks to its computers, which were later blamed on the Russian government. In the call, Trump mentioned the US cybersecurity firm and said, “the server, they say Ukraine has it.” Trump also encouraged Zelensky to “find out what happened” with the server. “I do not know why the President associates these servers with Ukraine,” the whistleblower wrote in a footnote. The whistleblower added that Trump had previously connected the DNC server to Ukraine in television interviews. Trump’s interest in CrowdStrike and the DNC server, more than three years after the hacks, is part of a larger effort to undermine the
notion that Russia meddled in the 2016 election to help him win. He has repeatedly rejected the assessment from CrowdStrike, which was later confirmed by US intelligence agencies, that Russia was behind the DNC hacks and leaks. The complaint demonstrates in stark terms how people who work inside the US government, with access to highly sensitive materials, have struggled to figure out what was going on in an unconventional White House administration with a president who goes around official channels. The complaint contains a blend of information that was observed firsthand, details that were provided secondhand from other officials, and information that comes from public sources, like Giuliani’s appearances on television and news articles about his activities surrounding Ukraine.
